Despite chilly weather — which organizer Alex Buterman says bothers the parents a lot more than the kids — the annual Bob McWhinnie Day celebration was a great success once again.

“It was great,” Buterman said. “We raised about $800 at the bake sale alone and I think overall probably made $1200 this year.”

Buterman says that Bob McWhinnie inspired him to be more involved in the community.

“To me, the reason we have McWhinnie Day is Bob. He built the park. A lot of the kids coming out now don’t know who he was, but they respect the park.”

Buterman was sad to hear that the washrooms at the park had been vandalized this week.

Young mom faces spinal surgery Brandy Sims, a stay at home mom of three kids under eight, requires surgery for a rare brain condition that will take months to recover from

A Cranbrook family of five is reeling after learning that stay-athome mom Brandy Sims is suffering from a rate brain condition that could leave her paralyzed without surgery.

In March, doctors found Brandy has a rare congenital brain condition that is giving her daily headaches and pain and numbness in her hands. While she was born with the condition, called a Chiari brain malformation, Brandy only began noticing symptoms last year.

“I started noticing in the fall that I was getting a lot of pain and weakness in my hands, and then I started getting headaches in February.

I generally don’t get headaches, and I was getting them four or five times a week. I went to see the doctor about the headaches and just mentioned off hand

While the malformation affects 1 in 1,000 people, in most cases the person won’t even be aware as it won’t ever present symptoms.

However, that’s not so for Brandy, 38, who is married with three children aged seven, five and one.

The malformation at the base of her skull has developed into a condition called syringomyelia, which damages the spinal cord.

“It blocks the flow of spinal fluid and permeates into the spinal cord and creates a pocket that is filled with fluid and puts pressure on my nerves,” said Brandy.

Left unchecked, the condition could lead to nerve damage and even paralysis.

After a rushed trip to Kelowna to meet with a surgeon in March, Brandy and husband James made the obvious decision to proceed with surgery, which will relieve the compression of the brainstem.

But the busy stay-at-

home mom will be in hospital for four days and require months of rehabilitation afterwards. For up to three months after the surgery, Brandy won’t be able to sit or stand for more than two hours a day, and she won’t be able to bend to tie a shoe, unload the dishwasher, or pick up a child. It can take up to a year after surgery for the pressure on the spinal cord to be relieved.

“It’s extremely frightening, but you try and stay positive. You can’t give yourself the option of thinking in a negative manner. The kids need me and my husband needs me,” she said.

Now she is on the other side of that, with her best friend Coral Colgur organizing a fundraising drive to help the Sims through the financial difficulty accompanying the surgery.

“Usually I’m on the other end of things. It’s different, but we definitely appreciate it,” said Brandy.

A donation webpage has been set up at www. youcaring.com. Already generous donations are coming in for the family.

“Every time I look at it I’m in tears. It’s really beautiful to see such good in people, even people I don’t know and people I haven’t seen in 20 years,” said Brandy. “It will be a lifesaver, really. I’m not sure what we would do without it.”

As James will return to work after Brandy’s surgery, the Sims will have expenses that include child care, housekeeping, travel costs for at least three medical trips to Kelowna, and rehabilitation costs.

Gifts from the community will help the family cover those expenses.

“We wish to express our gratitude to everybody who’s rallying (around us). So many people are offering to make us food, help with our pets, the kids, housekeeping, whatever they can do. It’s wonderful,” said Brandy.

Young Artists on show at Centre 64

New Trail Signs at the Kimberley Riverside Campground. On Sunday April 27th, volunteers from Rotary, Kootenay Freewheelers, and Kimberley Trails Society installed new trail signs for the trail network adjacent the Kimberley Riverside Campground. The signs were made by Kimberley local Gerry Drane who also created the new trail signs for the Kimberley Nature Park. These new trail signs will help promote access and use of these great trails that run alongside the beautiful St. Mary’s River. The trails provide great river access and outstanding viewing of the river and St. Mary’s Valley.

The installation of trail signs is part of a signage project being coordinated by the Kimberley Trails Society. The project is nearing completion, with signs to be installed towards the end of May on new kiosks at the Campground, Swan Avenue Trailhead, Centennial Hall and the Kimberley Nordic Centre.

McWhinnie Day raises funds for skate park enhancements From page 1 Apart from remembering Bob McWhinnie, the annual McWhinnie Day also raises funds to enhance the park. In fact, the washrooms which were vandalized were built with McWhinnie Day funds.

A ballot was taken last Sunday asking what other enhancements could be built with the money.

“The kids want a staircase for jumping,” Buterman said. “I really have my heart set on a permanent stage/shelter and I’m afraid that the money we do have could be gobbled up pretty quick trying to build a jump because you have to have a concrete run into it as well.

But myself and the rest of the design team are going to go look at it and see where it might fit.

“It’s either the staircase or a stage.”

As always McWhinnie Day couldn’t happen without a lot of support from volunteers and local businesses.

Over 70 artworks by young Kimberley area artists are now on show in the Gallery at Centre 64 in the first annual Young Artists 12 to 25 adjudicated exhibition put on by Kimberley Arts Council. The works include paintings, drawings, mixed media, digital design, photography, and sculpture and the show rivals the annual Arts on the Edge exhibition in variety and vitality. Most of the artworks are by students in Kimberley schools and credit must be given to the schools’ art teachers for providing the opportunity for such creativity.

Three local professional artists, Tony Austin, Helen Robertson, and Elaine Rudser, adjudicated the exhibition for prizes which were awarded on the basis of one prize for every six entries in each section.

The winners will receive cash prizes at a public reception in the Gallery at Centre 64 this Saturday afternoon, May 3,

from 2 to 4 p.m. The prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m.

Everyone interested in the arts is invited to come and applaud the talents of the community’s youth and enjoy some delicious appetizers. Admission is free. If you can’t make it to the reception, the exhibition is open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. each Tuesday to Saturday until May 24.

Happy Earth Week at Marysville and Lindsay Park Schools What a great week learning about our Earth and appreciating the beautiful world we are so fortunate to live in. We are hopeful that with the information and knowledge gained throughout the week the students will be proud in making Marysville and Lindsay Park, Earth Friendly Schools l!- Everyday!!

On Tuesday April 22nd the students at Marysville School celebrated Earth Day. The

students participated in an Earth Day Activity Morning. The children rotated with their buddy groups through eight fun, educational, Earth Day Activities set up by Mrs. Anna Keiver. In the afternoon the children participated in a school yard cleanup using Pitch In bags donated by the City of Kimberley.

On Tuesday April 22nd at Lindsay Park the children participated in a school yard clean up also using the Pitch In bags provided by the City of Kimberley.

On Friday April 25th

both Marysville and Lindsay Park students participated in an amazing Earth Day Walk!!

Marlene and Dennis Driscoll collected and peeled 300 Hawthorne sticks throughout the winter to use as walking sticks for all the children in both schools. The children in each school worked diligently to sand their own walking stick which was then oiled and decorated.

the Rails to Trails doing a trail cleanup along the way to Rotary Park. The Lindsay Park students began their walk from their school to Rotary Park. The goal was that both schools would meet at Rotary Park for a picnic and an Earth Day Celebration! It was an amazing day!! The children from both schools did a wonderful job on the walk and were so proud of their walking sticks!

A big Thank You is extended to the Kimberley Fire Department who brought their ladder truck to take an aerial picture of the students and staff in the formation of a tree and sun.

Midwives mark 10 years in East Kootenay

Celebrate the anniversary with East Kootenay Midwives on May 5 Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff

Ten years ago, midwife Jane Blackmore moved to Cranbrook and began offering midwifery services in the community.

Since then, the practice has grown to include another two midwifes - Carolyn Thibeault who joined in 2005, and Sivan Bar-Sever who joined in 2010 - and the group is hoping to promote awareness of the health care service at a celebration on Monday, May 5.

From noon to 3 p.m. at the College of the Rockies track field, the midwives are inviting past and present clients, midwifery supporters and anyone interested in learning more about the practice, to join them for a picnic lunch. There will guest speakers and snacks, and the group will walk around the track together. Families are invited to bring their own lunch and picnic set-up, but refreshments will be provided.

The event will be held on International Day of Midwives, said

Carolyn Thibeault.

“Every year around the world they celebrate in different communities to bring awareness to the work that midwives do.”

In fact, the first baby delivered by a midwife in Cranbrook and the first child delivered in a home birth, now 10 years old, will both be present with their moms.

Thibeault said that most people don’t know that midwifery is a health care profession that requires a four-year degree and is covered by B.C. Medical.

“The big things that people don’t know is that the services are covered by B.C. health care, that we deliver babies in the hospital or at home, that we have an office where women come for prenatal and postnatal care, that we order lab work and ultrasounds and we can prescribe medications, and that in any complications we consult directly to obstetricians and pediatricians where necessary,” said Thibeault.

Midwifery was legislated and regulated in B.C. in 1998.

“That’s 16 years ago and still relatively new as far as an old profession reemerging for people to be aware of what we do,” she said.

In Cranbrook, there are about 450 babies

born each year, and the East Kootenay Midwives deliver about a quarter of them - around 120 a year.

“That number is actually very high if you look at other places. In a lot of areas it’s five per cent. So it is quite a large percentage of women who are coming to us.”

The B.C. midwifery program is modelled on New Zealand’s program, where about 75 per cent of babies are delivered by midwifes.

But the difference is partly due to the small number of midwifery graduates in B.C. Until this year, only 10 midwifes graduated from the University of British Columbia program each year, the only institution that offers it. That intake was recently increased to 20.

“The reality is that most of them are staying in the Lower Mainland,” said Thibeault.

As many rural communities experience a doctor shortage, there is going to be more and more need for midwives in the community, she went on.

“As more doctors reduce their availability, it’s going to be more important for midwives to start picking up on that.”

busy months, but it’s an important that women who are expecting have the option of choosing a midwife.

“We don’t have waiting lists every month, but if people are interested in our care, it’s important that they call as soon as they have a positive pregnancy test,” said Thibeault.

While awareness of midwifery is growing, there are still misconceptions prevalent in the community.

“People still get lots of shocked responses from family and friends if they are planning a home birth, but it’s a very safe alternative to hospital birth as long as you have a women who meets the criteria and a skilled care provider. Research that has been conducted shows that it is just as safe, if not safer than the hospital,” said Thibeault.

“When midwives are in the hospital, they are basically admitting a patient and

using a room. People sometimes think they are under everybody’s care - a doctor’s care, a nurse’s care - but that’s not actually the case.”

Midwives also provide care once mom and baby go home for up to six weeks after the birth, which usually includes several in-home visits in the first week.

Other medical professionals are beginning to adopt some midwifery practices as research shows their effectiveness.

“An example of that is delayed cord clamping,” Thibeault explained. “Midwives have always intuitively done delayed cord clamping, but as midwife education grows, midwives are going into midwifery research. So one of those developed a research study on delayed cord clamping and actually showed that it does improve hemoglobin outcomes six months later - it is better for babies to receive that cord blood

after they are born.

That research paper has actually changed practices in the hospital.

Keeping Sabbath: Ceasing and resting

O

ne of my strongest memories of my youth is that our family always made sure that Sunday was a special day. We were Dutch Reformed; for us, Sunday was the day we went to church.

Nothing got in the way of church. We went twice each Sunday, morning and late afternoon. The rest of the day was spent in family activities: playing games, picnicking, reading quietly. Stores weren’t open, and even if they were, we wouldn’t have been allowed to go.

One year, my grandmother visited us from Holland. As a Dutch Calvinist, she was even more strict about keeping Sunday than my parents were. Sundays were a day when we were supposed to think about God. For three weeks, we had to stay in our Sunday clothes. We were not allowed to play games. We were not allowed to play outside. We had to follow the fourth commandment very strictly, “keeping the Sabbath holy”.

As you might imagine, an 11–year–old boy was not very happy about this state of affairs. Nor were my younger brothers and sisters.

We’ve lost much of that these days. Our society doesn’t keep sabbath. Everything is wide open all the time. Stores, shopping malls, hockey rinks, restaurants — there is so much which entices us to keep busy, to keep running around on weekends as well as during the week. We’ve lost any sense of taking some time out.

Sabbath has to do with rest, with renewal, with taking time out from the routine round of work to renew ourselves. The word “sabbatical” comes from sabbath.

The online dictionary defines a sabbatical

as an extended period of leave from one’s customary work, usually for rest, to acquire new skills or training. Sabbath rest is a gift to the world, to give us space from our everyday business and busy–ness to rest, to be renewed, to let go of our need to control life.

About 20 years ago, Marva Dawn wrote a wonderful book called Keeping the Sabbath Wholly: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, Feasting.

The subtitle gives a vital clue to her understanding of what it means to keep the Rev. Yme Sabbath holy — and wholly Woensdregt (what a wonderful pun!).

To be holy means to be set apart. Sabbath is a day set apart from the other six days. We keep Sabbath holy by ceasing and resting. We spend so much time striving, trying to be better, trying a little harder, giving our all, and then giving a little more. All around us, voices entice us to upgrade, to get the new and improved model, to do more and achieve more.

So what does it mean to take some sabbath time, to keep the sabbath holy and wholly?

First of all, it’s a time simply to stop. We take a break from our competitive lives.

We lay aside our need to win. We take time just to be rather than to do. Sabbath gives us time to enjoy the blessings of our lives.

We stop to marvel at snow–covered mountains and the streams running in their banks; we take time to nurture relationships and pursue those activities which give us joy. Sabbath is a time of ceasing.

Secondly, sabbath is a time of resting.

When she talks about resting, Marva Dawn means more than just stopping our activity and doing nothing. For her, resting has

to do with renewal. To rest is to be renewed physically and spiritually, relationally and internally.

When we keep sabbath, we renew our relationships with others and build new connections. How many times have you said to someone, “We really should get together more often” after an evening of good food and conversation? Sabbath provides an excellent opportunity to do just that, to relax with good friends, enjoying relationships that are mutually nurturing. It’s a time to nurture relationships with your spouse, with your children, with your friends.

It’s also a time to nurture our relationship with God. Sabbath brings spiritual renewal. Life is more than just consuming, competing, and worrying about our stock portfolios. We need to pay attention to our spiritual lives, and that’s becoming increasingly difficult in this competitive, consumerist society.

Psalm 23 can be read as a song which celebrates keeping the sabbath. Near the beginning, the Psalmist says that “God restores my soul”. That happens in so many ways. In the beauty of green pastures and walking beside still waters. In a table spread before me. In the security and safety of knowing we are held. In the profound trust that our lives are filled with goodness and mercy. In the certain knowledge that even in the most difficult circumstances of our lives, God is with us.

Ceasing. Resting. Renewing. These two aspects of keeping sabbath are necessary things for us to have a whole and healthy life. I’ll save the other two aspects — embracing and feasting — for next week.

The Trial of Death Valley Scotty What’s Up?

Jim Cameron e lived alone, up in the hills behind Lumberton near Palmer Creek, the waterway that once carried gold nuggets down the mountain to Palmer Bar where they were eagerly sought by the prospectors of the day. Years later he carried on the search for gold, living in a sturdy log cabin he built himself to see him through the short summers and long winters.

His youth long behind him, he was still in good health and seemed content with his life.

Although solitary by both nature and profession, he enjoyed company from time to time and was always happy to boil up a pot of tea and tell a few stories to any who cared to listen. He was an old-time prospector, the last of a dying breed.

His name — well, it’s not known what his real name was, but throughout the area he was known as Death Valley Scotty and, for a short time at least, he was famous.

Now let’s get a few facts straight: There was only one real “Death Valley Scotty.” His name was Walter Edward Scott and he was born Sept. 20, 1872, in Cynthiana, Kentucky. He took to horses at a young age and later spent 12 years with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. Along the way he realized that he was as clever and daring a con man as he ever was a stunt rider and thus began a long and profitable career bilking unsuspecting businessmen by offering to locate gold on their behalf, generally in the area of Death Valley, Nevada. By 1930, Death Valley Scotty was a name known throughout North America. It took a long time for the truth to come out and even then some of those who he had fleeced came back for more — he was likable guy.

The fellow who became our local Death Valley Scotty appeared at the Calgary Stampede in 1930 whereupon, flashing some press clippings and weaving a good yarn, he was taken to be the Death Valley Scotty and treated as a celebrity, a role he happily and apparently convincingly filled.

He was so believable that a group of Calgary investors persuaded him to travel to the East Kootenay to call upon his legendary magic and find some gold. A story appeared In the Dec. 4, 1930, issue of the Cranbrook Herald under the title: “Death Valley Scotty lives in the East Kootenay — Picturesque figure known the world over — Prospector and miner

who made and spent several fortunes now makes his home in Cranbrook.”

The article went on to state: “Believe it or not, but “Death Valley Scotty,” world famous character, who has furnished material for many a front page newspaper story by his exploits, now lives in East Kootenay and is seen frequently in Cranbrook. In fact he was in town this week. He is interested in a placer mining proposition … west of Lumberton and spends a good deal of his time there …

He has been in the district for several months, and while he was known as Walter Scott and never denied being the original “Death Valley Scotty,” most people somehow could not bring themselves to believe that this was the same man. Then last week’s Saturday Evening Post carried a story and a couple of good pictures of the man. People saw the resemblance. Of course these pictures were taken back in 1905, when Scotty was in the heyday of his career.”

And thus, it would appear, the legendary Death Valley Scotty became a local fixture.

Sadly, he failed to come up with a gold strike and in time the investors became concerned and then angered.

They approached the local police and charged him with fraud.

This time the headline read: “DEATH VALLEY SCOTTY MAY BE AN IMPOSTER.” In fact, when the story hit the streets on July 2, 1931, Scotty was sitting in the local lockup, awaiting trial the following week, much to the dismay of many within the community.

In “one of the most interesting cases heard in a long time,” Cranbrook’s Death Valley Scotty was found not guilty by local judge Thompson. In summing up, His Honor stated that “the accused might not be the man he claimed to be, but he could find no intent to defraud.

“The man had greatness thrust upon him and was willing to submit to the burden …

Scotty did not impose himself on his associates but, on the other hand, these men did press their acquaintance on the mysterious prospector and were only too anxious to deal with him.”

Neither did the judge condone the defendant’s action in masquerading under an assumed name.

“This man hasn’t played the game. The old timer in the hills was a square shooter.

This man isn’t. He is a disgrace to the old time prospector.”

There are always those attracted to the rich and famous in the hopes of some of it rubbing off and are willing to suspend common sense to achieve their ends. The irony in this case is that those who believed him to be the real Death Valley Scotty were led a merry chase in the same manner as they would have been if

doing business with the man himself. It was a unique case of an imposter impersonating an imposter.

Scotty was none the worse for the affair. Reputation in hand, he returned home and carried on as usual until his death a few years later. His real story remains as elusive as the gold he sought. www.janusthenandnow.ca

SPORTS BRIEFS Nets trying to stave off elimination, host Raptors in Game 6 on Friday

NEW YORK - Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were expected to bring a championship mentality to Brooklyn, providing the skills, savvy and swagger the Nets needed to make a lengthy playoff run.

It’s hard to do all that from the bench.

That’s where they were for the entire fourth quarter of a Game 5 loss to the Toronto Raptors that sent the Nets to the brink of an even quicker elimination than last year, which seemed unthinkable before the season with the All-Star roster they assembled.

And coach Jason Kidd isn’t thinking about it now.

“We’re just focused on tomorrow’s game,” he said Thursday.

Lose it, and the Nets can forget about a shot at the NBA champions. The Raptors would be the ones moving on to face Miami.

A Brooklyn victory would force a Game 7 back in Toronto on Sunday.

“We have no doubt. We’re very confident,” Raptors guard Greivis Vasquez said. “We’re not going to underestimate them, but we’re going to go there with the mentality that we’re going to fight and we’re going to do whatever it takes to get this win.

We’re very humble, but at the same time we’re very hungry. We need to leave it all on the court. We’ve got to win Friday. It’s not going to be easy but that’s what we’re looking for.”

Francisco, Rasmus go deep as Blue Jays beat Royals 7-3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Mark Buehrle pitched into the seventh inning, Juan Francisco and Colby Rasmus each went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 Thursday night to avoid a series sweep.

Francisco and Rasmus each drove in a pair of runs for Toronto, as did Anthony Gose, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to start in place of injured outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Buehrle (5-1) worked through plenty of trouble to last 6 2-3 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. It was a solid bounceback performance after the left-hander was hammered for seven runs last Friday night against Boston.

Aaron Loup pitched 2 1-3 shutout innings for his third career save.

Ice add to prospect pool at draft Kootenay makes 10 selections while a local player gets picked up by Tri-City Americans TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

The Kootenay Ice added more prospects to the pool by selecting 10 players at the WHL Bantam Draft on Thursday in Calgary.

Using their 11th overall pick in the first round, Ice director of scouting Garnet Kazuik selected defenceman Griffin Mendel, adding two more blueliners, six forwards and a goaltender after 11 rounds.

Due to trades the Ice did not make selections in the third round (sent to Kamloops in a trade package for Landon Cross and Tim Bozon) and the sixth round (sent to Kelowna for Zach Franko).

The Ice made two selections in the ninth round and one final pick in the 11th round.

“It went well,” said Kazuik. “We didn’t have a third or a sixth round pick, so obviously, you got to change your strategy a bit and be patient, and be very sure of who you want to take.

“In the mid-rounds to late-rounds you’ve got to work and you’re projecting players at that point—who is going to be a good player for the Kootenay Ice in the future.”

While there wasn’t the star power of guys like Matthew Barzal (1st overall, 2012) or Tyler Benson (1st overall, 2013) to open the first round, Kazuik added that patience is key when it comes to developing and growing elite hockey players.

“I think in time, some of these players will become impact players in our league,” Kazuik said. “…At the end of the day, these players are going to play and they’re going to be very, very good hockey players in this group.”

The Brandon Wheat Kings had the first overall pick, scooping up centre Stelios Mattheos out of Winnipeg.

When it came to Kootenay’s spot at 11th overall, Kazuik made his first pick on Mendel, who plays out of the Okanagan Hockey Academy and hails from Kelowna.

“He’s a big body, he’s a very strong player, he shoots the puck, he sees the ice,” said Kazuik. “The biggest thing with Grif is he’s a very, very patient hockey player. He sees the ice very well and what

Kazuik spent the rest of the draft collecting two more defencemen and six forwards.

Americans draft Cranbrook product One Cranbrook hockey player was picked up in the WHL Bantam Draft, as the Tri-City Americans tabbed Korbyn Chabot 182nd overall in the ninth round.

Chabot, a centre, spent the last season playing for the bantam Tier 2 Cranbrook Hornets in the South Central Alberta

Hockey League.

Chabot led his team in scoring, posting 47 goals, 21 assist for 68 points in 31 games. He was the runner up in the league points race, but led the SCAHL in goals.

Though it happened in the ninth round, Chabot is still excited to be a new WHL prospect with the Americans.

“It was a goal of mine, I really thought I was going to get drafted, so I was really happy when I did,” said Chabot. “…I know a few things [about Tri-City], they’re a high-level team, high competition. I know a few kids that got drafted last year and this year, so it should be a fun year.”

He has a busy summer of off-season training ahead of him before he gets the chance to showcase his skills in front of the scouting staff at training camp.

VANCOUVER - The man charged with the job of revitalizing the Vancouver Canucks made his first major move toward erasing the memory of one of the team’s worst seasons in recent history.

Trevor Linden, the former Vancouver captain who has taken over as the team’s president, put his stamp on the Canucks by firing head coach John Tortorella on Thursday.

Linden said the action was the first step in moving on from a frustrating season that saw the

Canucks miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“Today is about the future of this team and the goal of getting it back to the Stanley Cup playoffs,” Linden told a news conference.

Tortorella’s firing was expected, but Linden said he didn’t want to rush the decision.

“I tried to come in from a neutral place,” he said.

“At the end of the day I kept coming back to a lot of things I didn’t like that I saw trending. I just felt to move forward and kind of put a new perspective and new direction, it was the

right thing to do.”

Besides Tortorella, assistant coach Mike Sullivan was also relieved of his duties. They join fired president and general manager Mike Gillis as those paying the price for a dismal year that saw the Canucks finish 25th overall.

Assistant coaches Glen Gulutzan and Darryl Williams and goaltender coach Roland Melanson will keep their jobs.

Linden hopes to have a new general manager hired by the end of the month. The search for a coach could coincide with looking for a GM.

“I have a real strong (GM) candidate list that I will be starting the interview process next week,” said Linden. “I think the two processes can move along together for a certain period of time.

“It’s important the manager have a great deal of input on the coaching direction. That would be the ideal situation.”

One of the most popular Canucks of all time, Linden is trying to repair the team’s image and its relationship with fans left disillusioned by Vancouver’s drop from the ranks of the NHL’s elite.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My brother-in-law, “Tom,” lives with us because he is not able to hold a job. Fifteen years ago, he moved to the Midwest with his wife and children. He was there for a year, and then his wife divorced him. We paid for his ticket home, and he lived with us for three months. He then moved to California to live with a cousin, but they threw him out when he couldn’t hold onto a job and pay rent. He became homeless.

Tom moved back into his mother’s house and found work, but only for a brief time before he was fired. Any money he had saved, he spent in bars and on women. When Mom went into a nursing home, Tom couldn’t pay the upkeep on the house, so he rented it out and ended up homeless again. So we took him in.

We helped Tom get food stamps and a parttime job. He sees a counselor once a month.

Our only rule is that he has to be in by 9 p.m., because I work early, and when he comes home late, it wakes me up. But Tom has a hard time following this.

Tom continues to make poor choices, and I am afraid he will end up living with us permanently. Why is he this way? And what can I do to help? -- Miserable Sister-in-Law Dear Miserable: Counseling should help determine why Tom makes poor choices.

But he also could use a physical checkup. It’s possible Tom suffers from attention deficit disorder and cannot focus on the work at hand. Or he may have an alcohol problem.

However, your kindness is also a form of enabling. By giving Tom a cushion to fall back on, he hasn’t had to take complete responsibility for his own actions. A 9 p.m. curfew is rather early for an adult, but it is a small price to pay for free housing.

Talk to your husband so you are both in agreement about how to handle Tom. You could take away his house key and tell him the doors will be bolted after 9. You could throw him out. You could ask him to pay a small amount of rent from his part-time job.

But we also recommend that you and your husband request a joint session with Tom and his counselor to talk about the best way to deal with this.

Dear Annie: I live in a nice-sized city. We have lots of beautiful parks with walking paths and a small zoo. We have green grass and flowers in the summer and beautiful lights shining against the snow in winter.

But nearly every home on my block has garbage cans “decorating” the front yard.

One neighbor starting putting his trash out there, and now everyone does it. Why would residents think this is beautiful? We all have garages to house our garbage bins. How can I remedy this ugliness? -- Love My City in N.D. Dear N.D.: Does your city have regulations about leaving garbage cans at the curb on days when garbage is not picked up? Is there a homeowners or neighborhood association that could help mediate? Otherwise, simply knock on your neighbors’ doors and say that you find these garbage cans to be an eyesore that detracts from your lovely street. Ask whether they would consider keeping them in the garage. Be friendly. Bring cupcakes. It can’t hurt.

Clouston Chalmers 1930 - 2014 Clouston Chalmers passed away on Monday, April 28, 2014 in Cranbrook at 83 years of age.

Clouston was born in South Shields, England on October 5, 1930.

He and his wife Audrey immigrated to Canada in 1956 and settled in Kenora, Ontario. They moved to Cranbrook in 1966 and Clouston opened a jewellery store. A jeweller and watchmaker by profession, Clouston never hesitated to try his hand at new jobs and adventures. He was a goldsmith, game warden, miner, corner store owner and best of all, he was the grandpa who everyone loved.

Clouston found the funny side of almost any situation and his huge laugh and smile were the first thing everybody noticed.

Clouston was predeceased by his sister Mac (Bill) and is survived by his brothers William (Maureen) and Graham (Sheila) Chalmers and his sister Joyce (Jack) Atkinson, and his nieces and nephews Adrienne, Tony, Hilary, Keith, Allison, Brian and Alfie in England.

He leaves behind his wife of nearly 60 years Audrey, 3 sons: Graham (Marj), Duncan and David (Nancy) Chalmers and his daughter Melissa Hamm (Bruce), 6 grandchildren: Cheryl-Lynn, Shaydon, Jeffrey, Michael, Hannah and Max and his long-time best friends Ron and Wilma Swail.

Go in peace Dad/Gramps; you were bigger than life and we will miss you more than you know.

A long time resident of the town he loved, everybody who knew Clouston is invited to his funeral service at the Cranbrook Alliance Church at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 3, 2014 with a reception to follow.

In 1916 her mother died and at the age of 8 she traveled with her father and 4 of her siblings to New Brunswick, Canada, via Ellis Island, N.Y.

Career opportunity ANALYST This position researches and analyses various issues and provides analytical and administrative support to programs, initiatives and other responsibilities of the Sector Initiatives department. This is a permanent, full-time position based out of any of our four offices.

Gunda was the matriarch of a large family and she was ‘hands on’ and an inspiration to every one of them, encouraging them to be the best they could be. Her summers were busy welcoming grandchildren to bake cinnamon buns and pick berries for her delicious pies.

She is lovingly remembered by her son Bill (Ruth) Ratcliffe of Victoria, daughter Alice (Stan) Owen of Lynden, Wa. 7 grandchiildren and spouses, 14 great grand children and 12 great great grand children and their respective families and many relatives in Norway.

Gunda was a woman of great spirit, making friends easily with her quick wit and caring manner. She loved to cook and insisted ‘you stay to dinner’. There was always room for more at her table. She often said, “If there is room in the heart there is room in the home.”

During WW11, she often shared the family rations in care packages for overseas. Still, her family never seemed to go without. Always optimistic she showed great courage and strength during hard times and great joy during good times.

Gunda passed away at KinVillage. She was predeceased by her husband Karsten (1987) daughter Patricia (2003) and son-in-law Hugh Morris (2012).

Gunda lived in New Brunswick until as a young woman she moved west, first residing in Saskatchewan, then Alberta and finally B.C., for the past 72 years. She and her husband Karsten raised 3 children in Kimberley, B.C. After Karsten’s death Gunda moved to Tswwassen to be closer to family.

Gunda’s birthday parties became legendary within the family right up to her last celebration at 106 years.
