Newly appointed Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick is meeting with B.C. Agriculture Council (BCAC) representatives this week to discuss their growing concerns about a plan to set new rules for protected farmland in the British Columbia Interior.

When changes to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) were announced in late

March, the move was generally endorsed

by Rhonda Driediger, then chair of the BCAC. Dreidiger, a berry grower in the Fraser Valley, said opening up the Interior, Kootenay and North regions to secondary uses based on social and economic needs would help farms innovate and stay in business.

Dreidiger has been succeeded as BCAC chair by Stan Vander Waal, who operates flower greenhouses in Chilliwack.

After meeting last week with Letnick, Vander Waal wants changes to the legislation.

“It is the position of the B.C. Agriculture Council that as currently written, Bill 24 threatens the sustainability of agriculture in B.C.,” Vander Waal said in a statement.

The BCAC is forming a steering committee of member farmers to continue discussions with the government.

Vaccination: best shot for families

The recent measles outbreaks in Canada remind us infectious diseases still pose a serious threat to our health.

Both infants and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to many vaccine-preventable diseases and their complications.

For example, infants who are too young to be fully immunized can become seriously ill if they come in contact with an under-immunized adult who is sick with even a mild case of an illness, such as pertussis.

During National Immunization Awareness Week (April 26-May 3), Immunize Canada urges all Canadians to protect themselves and others by staying up-to-date with their immunizations.

It is now easier than ever for Canadians to keep track of

their immunizations thanks to a new app, ImmunizeCA, developed by Immunize Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Public Health Association and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The changes were spearheaded by Energy Minister Bill Bennett as part of the provincial government’s “core review” of operations.

They would allow consideration of more non-farm uses outside Vancouver Island, South Coast and Okanagan regions where most of B.C.’s farm income is generated.

Bill 24 also formalizes the cabinet appointment process for the ALC’s six regional panels, so two or three local farmers make the front-line decisions on applications for permitted uses, such as a secondary residence.

NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons has protested the legislation since it was revealed.

“The decision to protect land suitable for agriculture 40 years ago was for the benefit of future generations.

“Holly was fighting against three boys and Jake was in a pool of six. That gave them the opportunity to try out many things they’ve learned.

They did really well.”

Shin Bu Kan Judo, located on Cedar Avenue, has practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

“A big thank you goes out to the parents who were supporting Holly and Jake before, during and after the tournament,” adds Smolarek.

“They made friends at the tournament and had a lot of fun.”

The 100 Mile District Hospice Palliative Care Society elected its board members and installed the executive for the upcoming fiscal year at its annual general meeting on April 14.

Board chair Lynda Lewis says the AGM was well attended with about 30 members turning out to vote.

Funds for art

The 100 Mile and District Arts Council, serving the South Cariboo, was awarded $3,647 in BC Arts Council grants, Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett announced on April 24.

This funding will be used by the arts council to assist in its operating activities for the upcoming fiscal year.

“I am very pleased to see this funding from our government and the BC Arts Council help keep the South Cariboo arts and culture scene thriving,” Barnett said.

“Our local artists and performers are incredibly talented, and the 100 Mile & District Arts Council does great work serving our community.”

As British Columbia’s lead agency for arts funding and development, the BC Arts

Folks can help dispatchers help patients with good calls

The B.C. Liberal government proclaimed April 13-19 as Emergency Service Dispatchers’ and 9-1-1 Awareness Week to recognize the skills and dedication of call takers and dispatchers throughout the province.

BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) emergency medical call takers (EMCTs) and emergency medical dispatchers (EMDs) are the first point of contact for medical assistance during an emergency. These calm, reassuring and highly trained personnel assess the patient’s clinical needs, surroundings and geographic location; provide life-saving information – such as CPR and childbirth – instructions to 9-1-1 callers; and ensure the right ambulance, gets to the right patient, in the right time.

Last year, BCAS dispatchers co-ordinated responses to more than

413,000 pre-hospital events. While many of the calls they received involved life-threatening situations from cardiac arrests to childbirth to motor vehicle incidents, some, however, were not of an urgent nature and did not require paramedic care.

Examples of some of the more unusual calls include: • There is a racoon in my garden and he looks angry. Can you take him away?

• Can you tell me how to cook my turkey?

• My shower drain is clogged.

• Could you tell me the time, please?

• I’m out of beer.

• I think my house is infested with fleas.

Can someone come and check it out?

• My husband and I just woke from the same nightmare. We’re concerned about our bad dream.

• I finished my dinner two hours ago, but it

feels like there might be a piece of rice still stuck in my throat.

• I think my fish has died. Can you give me CPR instructions to revive him?

• I can’t get through to my cell provider. Can you help me?

Gord Kirk, BCAS director of dispatch operations, strongly recommends that 9-1-1 calls for ambulance service be used for medical emergencies only.

“It’s important to remember that we’re here to help people

with emergency medical situations. Calls that are inappropriate divert resources from those who need swift medical attention.”

The BCAS encourages the public to dial 9-1-1 for assistance during a medical emergency.

Alternatives to calling an ambulance include contacting the 8-1-1 tele-health service, accessing a walk-in clinic, making an appointment with a family doctor or visiting a hospital emergency

department if necessary.

Hospital emergency departments triage all patients that arrive, including those by ambulance.

New uses for hi-tech licences

With one million of its new high-tech drivers’ licences in use, the B.C. Liberal government is preparing to use them for access to medical records, applying for student loans and a range of other uses.

The new driver’s licence was introduced a year ago.

It has a digital chip that replaces the existing medical CareCard system.

The health ministry estimated that there were more than nine million CareCards in circulation.

That happens to be about twice as many as there are residents of British Columbia.

Andrew Wilkinson, minister of technology, innovation and citizens’ services, released results of a public consultation on the new cards recently.

With digital security similar to bank cards, he said the public appears prepared to use them to apply for prescription renewals, birth, death and marriage certificates, voter registration and criminal records checks.

Secure online access to such government services would require passwords to be issued, “robust” computer programs to be completed

and at least half of B.C. residents to have the new cards, Wilkinson said.

They are being issued as current drivers’ licences expire, and the new services could be available by the end of 2015.

Proof of identity for medical care may also be used for online booking of medical appointments throughout the province.

“With the services card they’ll have a unique identifier that connects them with the proper medical records and establishes that they’re entitled to care.”

The cards are issued to replace the current driver’s licences, for the same $75 fee. For people who don’t drive, a similar card with only medical identity is available at no charge.
