One person has been killed in a fire that consumed a mobile home early Wednesday morning. Police and fire officials, as well as the coroner’s office, continued with their investigations throughout the day at the trailer park, located near Lougheed Highway and Highway 11.

It’s too early to determine the cause of the fire or if it was intentionally set, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “We haven’t confirmed the identity [of the deceased] at this point.” The body was discovered after the fire was put out, and police also don’t know the gender of the victim. An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday (May 1).

Firefighters were called around 4:45 a.m. and the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived, said Fire Chief Larry Watkinson. Residents in the mobile home community were awoken by the sirens and most went out to see the commotion, said Myrle Ginther, who owns the unit near the entrance of the park. Ginther’s sister, Bev Coldwall,

who was spending the night, heard the sirens first. “I heard, ‘thump, thump,’” recalled Coldwall. “I saw the lights and peaked through the window.” Initially, she thought a neighbour was ill, but when she saw the flames shooting into the sky, she called for her sister. Ginther doesn’t know her neighbours well, and thought

I haven’t seen anyone there in a while.”

When Heritage Park Secondary student Brooklyn Mavis was denied the opportunity to continue with an exchange program last month, she lost more than a trip to Prince Edward Island. In her crusade to convince PEI organizers to reconsider, Mavis has lost friends who are treating her differently after learning about her medical issues. F i f t e e n - y e a r- o l d Mavis has Aspergers and epilepsy and had few friends growing up. In fact, she had hoped for a new start when she came to HPSS, and joined the Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC) program. In March, Mavis was part of a local group that hosted students from PEI, and she was supposed to travel to the east coast in May to complete the exchange. But on April 1, Mavis was told she could not participate. A letter from PEI’s Bluefield High School

from the start and her doctor also approved the trip. In a letter to SEVEC’s executive director last week, Mavis wrote she believed she was excluded after she had a seizure at one of the outings with PEI students in March, and she pointed out the decision to eliminate her was “an uninformed and rash decision based on fear of my disability.” Nobody attempted to “seek information or education in order to find a solution where I could continue to participate while having my health and safety maintained,” she stated. Mavis and her mother, Melanie Bowen, went to the media last week and called the move by the PEI school to exclude Mavis discriminatory. School officials from both communities and SEVEC have been in discussions over the past few weeks to find a compromise to allow Mavis to participate. But Mavis would rather sit out on the trip rather than comply with

A councillor is paid $22,280 and a car allowance of $1,200. “This is always a difficult thing for councils to do,” said Coun. Jenny Stevens. “That’s why we’re making recommendations for the

months and all feedback received by the district was forwarded to council. Three citizens who wrote in by email supported the pay raises, while six were opposed. Mayor Ted Adlem and Coun. Larry Nundal believe elected officials are paid adequately and did not support the increases. Coun. Dave Hensman was absent from the meeting.

“I believe for the size of the community, what the mayor gets paid is fair,” said Adlem. “I don’t dispute if council’s salary is over or under. I believe a good portion of what you do on council is a donation to the community.” Mission’s population is estimated to be 36,426. In Campbell River, which has a population of 31,186, the mayor’s salary was

$61,328 in 2013, while a councillor’s salary was $23,423. In Port Moody, which has an estimated population of 32,975, the mayor earned $72,914 last year, while a councillor took home $25,520. Vernon’s mayor and council were paid $68,124 and $24,423 respectively. Vernon’s population is estimated at 38,150.

A chaperone would be in a separate hotel room. “I have thought long and hard and … as much as I would love to participate in this exchange, I cannot bring myself to compromise my integrity by asking my mother to apologize for something that I know is untrue,” said Mavis. I take the concerns of everyone associated with our youth exchanges very seriously.” Cummings explained plans were in place initially to accommodate Mavis’ visit to PEI, but increased measures had to be developed after the medical incident during the first leg of the exchange. “Thousands of youth enjoy SEVEC exchanges every year with local organizers taking the steps to accommodate participants of all abilities and to ensure the health and safety of all youth participants,” said Cummings. “I find it incredibly ironic that despite the fact (Mavis) doesn’t meet the mandate for social interaction, she’s jumping into the arena for social justice,” said Tucker, who added Mavis is continuing to go to school and participate to the best of her ability. “The community has rallied behind her.” A Facebook page called Fight Discrimination with Brooklyn was created to help Mavis with her cause.

Crews respond to weekend fires Mission police are looking for four youth seen fleeing from the Cedar Valley area after a small scrap pile of wood was set on fire near a home under construction. Witnesses extinguished the blaze before firefighters arrived at around 2:30 p.m. Police say there was no damage to the structure and the youth are described to be between 11 and 15 years old. Firefighters and RCMP were also called to a fire at an apartment building on Second Avenue, near Murray Street, at about 5:30 p.m. that same day. When firefighters arrived, there was heavy black smoke showing from the back side of the building, said Fire Chief Larry Watkinson. Fire crews put out the fire, which originated on the porch of a third-floor unit. “A propane tank was involved in the fire, but no explosion occurred. However, the rubber hose going to the barbecue valves was burned through and caused a blowtorch effect,” said Watkinson. The fire was caused by smoking material left on the porch, he added.

Cities call change downloading

What level of service should injured and sick residents expect from BC Ambulance and fire services? That’s at the heart of the issue now being debated as the BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) defends a Resource Allocation Plan that has downgraded some medical emergencies from Code 3 to Code 2. Previously, some of these emergencies were attended by ambulance and fire crews, who responded with lights and sirens at speeds above the posted speed limit. Now, only the fire department is responding with this level of service while the ambulance drives at posted speed limits and gets there later. According to BCEHS, the change in ambulance response time has actually cut the time paramedics get to serious emergencies, which is a good thing, while slightly lengthening the time for some of these Code 2 calls, reducing the potential for accidents — and the change isn’t affecting patient outcome, it says. But fire departments tell a different story, saying that some of these calls are taking up to half an hour or longer.

The cities argue this service change is downloading, pure and simple, so that instead of increasing resources to enable ambulances to handle the growing demand for service as the population increases and ages, the province is merely reducing some services to hold the line on costs elsewhere. But here’s the thing: Should firefighters stop attending these calls, too? That’s what BCEHS says, arguing that cities should adopt the same level of service, then there wouldn’t be any concerns about downloading. But this argument ignores the fact that residents pay for and have come to expect a certain level of service, and if firefighters adopt the same service model as the ambulance, the cities will catch heat. After all, a patient in severe pain may not be dying, but shouldn’t they get a quick response to hospital? Once again, the cities are saddled with the costs and the responsibilities of a senior level of government. And that’s just painful. – Black Press

Inconvenient truth of pine beetle Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views VICTORIA – Last week’s column on Earth Day myths attracted a fair amount of criticism. One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so. This fact blows another hole in the carefully crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems. That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C. coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen from space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas

that comes up with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline. Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government. B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years. In 2012 I participated in a B.C. forests ministry tour of facilities where hardy seedlings are grown for reforestation. Test plantings were also underway to see if the range of southern tree species is shifting northward due to climate change. During the bus ride, I asked the province’s top forest scientists if Campbell was right. The answer? We don’t have enough evidence to conclude that. As for shifting tree habitat, those decades-long experiments are continuing. The scientists confirmed what I already knew, which is that the most recent bark beetle epidemic is the latest of many. It’s the largest “on record,” but the record goes back

Conventional wisdom on the latest outbreak holds that it spread so far because of a lack of cold winters, attributed to human carbon emissions. I grew up in northern B.C., and my last two visits to the Peace country were both in January. In 2004 I recall changing planes on the tarmac of Prince George airport, moving

briskly in the daytime temperature near -40 C. That night, and subsequent nights, the mercury dropped to -50 C. In January 2013 I returned for some discussions on the Enbridge pipeline route, and experienced a relatively balmy -30 C in the daytime. So when I hear people talk about the end of cold winters in northern B.C. because of global warming, it’s difficult to square with personal experience. I can hear the rebuttals already. It takes long periods of extreme cold to kill the pine beetle. How long? Longer than those ones, of course. Similarly flexible theories are being advanced to explain the 17-year “pause” in Earth’s average surface temperature rise, the growing Antarctic ice sheet, and this past winter’s “polar vortex.” If anyone has substantial evidence that CO2 from human activity was the trigger mechanism for the latest beetle outbreak in B.C., I’d like to see it. But please, spare me the affirmations of quasi-religious faith that often pass for climate change arguments today. Municipality’s CAO not micromanaging staff

Get everyone on same page Re: Council was elected on a mandate of change, April 25 edition. The recent letter by Mayor Ted Adlem in response to Dennis Clark follows a similar path taken by several other writers that seeks to exacerbate a situation, out of context or perspective, to exaggerated realities. We are dealing with the careers of dedicated people, and the effectiveness of running a progressive and cost-effective municipality within the taxpayers’ ability to pay. This council’s plans and their execution have gone off the rails. Thus, the first crucial steps are to get everyone on the same page. The objective to create and manage effective change is commendable. Sadly, change is a state of mind and bad changes or mishandled process is detrimental to success. Hence, a mishandled or frivolous change, as alluded to by Mayor Adlem, is neither wise nor desirable. Vain attempts to demean opponents, such as by claiming they did not avail themselves of an “open door” or holding public forums only to find little public response ought to herald a lack of confidence or trust in council. I wonder if this sense has permeated staff levels at the municipal hall. Coun. Nelson Tilbury is correct as he worries that staffing exits will affect business, and he alludes to some concerns about productivity and knowledge being lost.

The District of Mission has a mayor who by nearly every action seeks unwittingly to exacerbate the dilemma he has created by lacking sensitivity and management. This has resulted in a lack of confidence and essentially a lame-duck mayor. Historically, councils could rely upon knowledgeable staff, so a crucial step is to recruit two or three competent civic administrators, those who are human-relations-oriented leaders. Taxpayers thank the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) political slate for ridding Mission of annual tax increases, and the horrific Public Safety Inspection Team fostered by a former misguided council. Sadly, desperately lacking leadership and conviction to work together caused an implosion of CRMG, but out of the ashes a new opportunity emerges. Adlem alludes to the Nov. 15 election, but has council already decided its fate? Four have left CRMG. Replacements promised by the mayor during April, have not materialized. So, might the outcome of the election be self-fulfilling prophecy, as the mayor drags the slate down to defeat? Can the public have confidence in the mayor that those elected will not repeat the same process? George F. Evens Mission

per cent increase for a CUPE deal at a time when inflation was almost flat. CUPE got their big win and we, the taxpayers, are still paying the bill. The Leisure Centre cost us millions of dollars in overruns. The one-and-a-half

is absolutely correct in doing so. The fact that there has been no increase in municipal taxes in two of the past three years is evidence that this management strategy is working. An examination of Dennis Clark’s legacy to Mission shows a 21

per cent tax increase last year was necessitated by the need to cover the CUPE contract. A manager who does his job well is not always everyone’s friend. The current CAO has exposed past mismanagement and

he is cleaning Mission’s house. Staff members who are doing their jobs well have high morale, and those who are not are being held accountable. I do not consider this micromanaging, but if that is what you want to call it then I

am proud to support it. I stand behind and applaud the work of Mr. Bjorgaard. I believe that the citizens of Mission are able to see clearly through the Clark fog. Bob Trustham Mission

Rethink Canada’s softwood lumber industry policy As a B.C. resident born at Mission Hospital in 1955, it pains me to see what is happening to Mission and Interior communities in regards to their economies and the demise of the B.C. softwood lumber industry. In earlier years, B.C.’s economy thrived in the softwood lumber industry. Left unto its own merits, it maintained its sustainability through the very supply and demand, demanded by modern democratic economies. It wasn’t until the U.S. realized that we were beating them at their own game, and that we could out supply them in their

own market cheaper than they could, that things changed to favour them, and they tariffed us out of their market. At the same time we were building our forest industry based on export of lumber to the U.S. So when the lumber demand dropped, so did the price, and you’ll notice there are very few lumber mills around. So now we are exporting raw logs and our best product out of the country and buying them back as finished goods. We have to figure out a way to become efficient enough with our sustainable and renewable forest resource that we don’t have to depend on market values to get

Most people have good hearts and would like to see the world transformed into one where love and compassion are the dominant motives, but unfortunately, the world isn’t so easily transformed. Hatred, violence and pugnacity are deeply seated in the human psyche, and the evildoing which flows from these sources is strongly resistant to change. So, how might we work to transform the world into a better place? There are many ways to make the world better. Gandhi suggested that “We must become the change we want to see in this world.” Jesus counseled us to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And, the law of karma claims that if we treat others well, our good deeds will return to us. Surely, there is some simple, yet profound wisdom in all of this. The quiet, unassuming example of a good person is often more effective at inducing change than the self-righteous moralist on their soapbox. Perhaps the attempt to transform the world into a better place is more like planting a seed than inducing a wholesale change of heart. And although we don’t know which of our kind words or actions will take root and grow in someone else’s heart, we should keep on planting those seeds and watering them with the hope that they will grow. And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold. R.S.V. Mark 4.8

Hatzic Lake’s new pump station will better protect property, land, and fish inside the dike. The station is located at the end of Hatzic slough and is part of a drainage plan developed by the Dewdney Area Improvement District (DAID) eight years ago. DAID is responsible for maintaining the dikes along the Fraser River from Dewdney Trunk Road and Lougheed Highway in Hatzic to Bell Road in Dewdney. Hatzic Lake water levels are affected by the Fraser River and water and debris coming off of local mountains and water sheds. The building is about seven by nine metres and starts at three metres below sea level, explained project manager Larry Wiens. It’s a floating pump station, and will move slightly in an earthquake, but is seismically stable, Wiens added. He explained the dike was built on top of the old river bed and heavy steel pilings were driven 50 feet into the ground for the new facility. All the material inside was cleaned out before the floor was poured and the pump house built. There are three pumps inside with a capacity of 14,000 litres per second. The flood gates will still be operational, and the old pumping station, which has a capacity of 8,000 litres per second, will be used as a back-up. The flood gates open and close depending on the level of the river. The old pump station was built a year after the devastating 1948 flood and was only supposed to be a temporary solution to drain the then-flooded valley, according to Wiens. The $4-million facility was funded equally by the federal and provincial governments and affected taxpayers. The public is invited to tour the new pump station May 3. Company earns award for Mission project A Mission infrastructure project won an award of excellence recently from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of British Columbia (ACECBC). Golder Construction earned the award for its work on the Ruskin Dam’s right abutment seepage control upgrade. The project was completed on time and on budget despite challenging ground conditions, and “significant dam safety and schedule constraints.” According to ACECBC, “This project demonstrates engineering achievement as it accomplished the successful development and application of a previously untried and untested means of flexible connectivity, the cutoff wall tie-in to the concrete dam.” The award was presented April 12 at the 25th annual Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala, held at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

Hatzic Lake celebrates new pump station

Flood plain needs protection In 1948 a devastating flood raged down the Fraser River, flooding several parts of the Fraser Valley. One of the most dramatic incidents occurred when the dike broke, just east of Mission, flooding most of Hatzic Island and Hatzic Prairie. The flood plain in the Hatzic Watershed is approximately 253ha (a hectar is the metric equivalent of 2.5 acres). Hatzic Lake is approximately 337ha. The whole area is protected from in-flooding from the Fraser River by the dike maintained by the Dewdney Area Improvement District. The

dike is constructed to the flood level plus a half meter. The present dike was constructed after the devastating floods of 1948. Prior to that, the CPR rail bed formed the major portion of the dike. After 1948, the CPR determined that their rail bed would not be used as a dike and the present dike was built along the Fraser River so it now also protects lands south of the railway tracks. The old pump station, which disappeared during the 1948 flood, was replaced with a system of two pumps and floodgates. At

the time the new dike was built the railway trestle was shortened and soon replaced by three culverts. Since 1948, there have been no floods caused by the Fraser River. However, significant flooding occurs on parts of Hatzic Island and Hatzic Prairie due to the volume of internal water coming off the surrounding watershed and overwhelming the capacity of the system. This problem is exacerbated by infilling of the lake and the drainage creeks with sediment from the surrounding mountains. Slides on the

mountains, particularly in the Patterson Creek drainage, have significantly reduced the water carrying capacity of the lake and creeks. While the clean-out of the creeks, and even the lake, will reduce the frequency and severity of the internal flooding, it will not eliminate it. An increase of pumping capacity by four times with a similar increase in flood box relief is required, along with the creek and lake clean out, before flooding would be all but eliminated.

Hatzic Lake celebrates new pump station

Project completed under budget The $4.039 million new pump station project for the Hatzic & Dewdney drainage system has been completed, on time and under budget. The Government of Canada, the Province of B.C. and taxpayers in the Dewdney Area Improvement district each paid a third o f the cost of the project, aimed at improving the quality of farmland in the Hatzic Valley, reducing harm from internal Áooding, and improving habitat for both resident and migratory Àsh species. The project was completed under the management of Associated Engineering, the DAID volunteer board of trustees, and DAID’s own project manager and engineers.

Wet farmland left unused Poor drainage and wet soil conditions have left a huge amount of farmland in Hatzic Prairie unsuitable for farming. A 2013 Ministry of Agriculture study found that 505 hectares of potential farmland was unused because of poor drainage. (That is an area 20 per cent larger than Vancouver’s Stanley Park.) The study notes that there are a number of farmers willing to make substantial investments to grow blueberries, nursery stock or livestock, if only the water levels can be controlled. The new pumps and control structures, now installed by the Dewdney Area Improvement District, are aimed at providing more efÀcient removal of excess water from the area, allowing the production of more valuable farm crops.

New pumps offer added protection

The organization responsible for Áood control and drainage in the Hatzic-Dewdney area is the Dewdney Area Improvement District (DAID). DAID’s mandate is to maintain the section of dike from Dewdney Trunk Road and Lougheed Highway in Mission to Bell Road in Dewdney. This dike keeps the Fraser River from Áooding the properties on the Áood plain north of the river. The dike was originally built under the operating authority of the Dewdney Diking District. In 1972 it was replaced, under special authority from the province called “letters patent,” by the Dewdney Area Improvement District. DAID is governed by nine trustees who are elected from the property owners by the property owners. Trustees represent three localized areas within the Improvement District; Dewdney, Hatzic Lake and Hatzic Prairie. Traditionally there are three trustees from each area.

The pumping facilities are located at the south end of Hatzic slough. The DAID chose Weir Canada Inc. and partner British manufacturer Bedford Pumps Ltd. to supply the Àrst installation of their new Àsh-friendly axial Áow pumps in north America. The three Bedford pumps have a maximum capacity of 14,000 litres per second. The existing 1949 pump station will be maintained as a backup that can add another 6 to 8 thousand litres per second. When the level of the Fraser River is lower than the level of water inside the dike, Áoodgates automatically open allowing water to discharge into the river. The Áoodgates only close if the Fraser River becomes higher than the water level inside the dike. The dike is mowed three times a year and any encroaching trees and blackberry vines are removed. The dike is patrolled daily by the maintenance person during the Áood stage in the spring and it is his responsibility to monitor and report any damage to the dike and or wear that needs repairing or replacing.

Hatzic Lake celebrates new pump station Large variety of ¿sh live in Hatzic Lake When the new pumping station at the Hatzic dike was proposed an environmental study was compiled. Part of that study identiÀed the types of Àsh that have been found in Hatzic Lake. Among the Àsh found were Chum, Coho and Chinook Salmon, Cuthtroat, Rainbow and Dolly Varden Trout, White Sturgeon, Black Crappie, Brown CatÀsh, Brook Stickleback, Prickly Sculpin, Carp, Largescale Sucker, Nothern Pikeminow, Peamouth Chub, Threespine Stickleback, CatÀsh and Suckers. Also found were Westslope (Yellowstone) Cutthroat Trout and other varieties of CatÀsh. When the improvements to the pumping station are completed there will be “bafÁes” installed that aim to keep the lake water level approximately Àve feet higher than the lowest recorded water levels. However, a system will be installed that will allow Àsh to enter the lake from the Fraser River during most of the year. The original dike, which keeps the Fraser River from Áooding the Hatzic area, was washed out in the 1949 Fraser River Flood. Construction of a new dike, Áoodbox and pumps severely hampered access to salmon. In 1955 there were no salmon recorded in the Hatzic Lake area. Forty years later the salmon had returned with some years reporting as many as 11,000 chum and 2,000 Coho salmon. The new pumps will also be “Àsh friendly” allowing Àsh up to 20 inches in length to be pumped from the lake to the Fraser River. This is important for migratory Àsh species, such as Salmon, that will spawn in the creeks leading into Hatzic Lake, but who must Ànd their way to the ocean for much of their lives, before they return to the lake to spawn. The new type of pumps, which are now being required on new installations in Europe, reduce mortality of young Àsh from approximately 50 per cent to less than three per cent. This allows the young Àsh to Ànd their way out of Hatzic Lake and into the PaciÀc Ocean where they grow for several years before returning to Hatzic to spawn.

Mission’s U13 Hurricanes were crowned the BC Coastal Girls Division 3 League Cup soccer champions this past weekend. The team earned their way into the single knock-out series by securing the Alouette District Cup last month. Exciting games were played against Port Moody, Richmond, and Chilliwack in the competition. The entire team put in strong performances, and Brooklynn Cooper was solid in net. The Hurricanes are coached by Travis James and managed by Brenda Scott. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. General Motors has put a new spin on ‘Take your child to work day’. You can’t put them to work while they are learning what mom and dad do but they can be useful as experiment subjects. The so-called Human Factors group conducts about 100 studies globally into how

people interact with their vehicles. Having children around means group members can test such things as seat belts. No, they don’t crash test the cars but they do examine how easy it is for children to buckle up. “Working with children on Take Your Child to Work Day is an excellent way for us to expand our pool of feedback,” said Don Shreves, GM Human Factors engineering group manager. “Our group and research is very data-driven,” he said. “Designing every element to a vehicle comes down to millimetres. While a door handle placement or seat switch might feel right to the designing engineer, we come in with data points from real consumer

feedback, including kids, to help determine the best location.” This year during the special day, the Usability team conducted a study looking at the Buick Enclave’s thirdrow safety belt buckles. The kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the safety belt based on a five-point scale. A previous study dealt with a sickly problem that many of us have faced on trips with young offspring. In the early days of DVD players in cars, there were many kids forced to reach for the barf bag during a long journey. Not now and some credit must go to Shreves’ group who figured out how to place the screen outside of what they charmingly refer to as “the puke zone.”

Shreves explains, sensitively: “We know through other scientific research that even if our eyes are focused on a fixed point – if we can see the outside passing by in the window – our brain is telling us that we are moving. “But if our eyes are at a downward angle and do not see the view outside the vehicle, our bodies become sensitive to motion and increase the chance of sickness.” The team’s goal was to keep passenger’s eyes up and in a given spot.

Determining that precise location required setting up a DVD screen on a track that could slide fore and aft along the roof of an Enclave. Researchers recorded the responses of more than 75 kids who were asked when the screen distance was too close and too far away. From there, the data was graphed and compiled to determine the best location. I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. August 27, 1983 - April 29, 2014

Jake

Layla went to be with her Lord on April 29, 2014 at the age of 30 years. She is survived by her loving family: her soul mate Caleb MacArthur, her parents Derek and Cindy Locke, brother Justin (Racheal), niece Avery, her Gramma Helen Herman, and also by her lifelong best friend Stephanie Siemens and many relatives and good friends. Layla’s passions in life included fastpitch softball in sports, being a paramedic professionally, and spending time with her family and friends. She had a big smile and a personality that you instantly fell in love with. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, May 6th at 2:00 p.m. in Olivet Church, 2630 Langdon Street, Abbotsford, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to the Canuck Place Hospice would be appreciated.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father, husband, brother and grandfather Jake Hildebrandt on April 25, 2014 at the age of 76. Jake is survived by his loving wife Katie, daughter Mandy (Colin), son Mike (Cindy), daughter Tammy (Raymond), sister Jessie (Nick), brother Cornie (Suzie), step children Randy (Marion) and Angela (Paul), grandchildren Sheri (Graham), Michele, Nicole, Jacob and Madeline, step grandchildren Daniel (Daisy), Kairee (Ben) and Kelsey and great step grandson Knox. Jake was born in Neuenburg, Ukraine on July 31, 1937 and immigrated to Canada in November 1948, eventually making his way to the Fraser Valley. Jake had a passion for sports including softball, hockey and fishing. He was also a tremendous handy-man and spent many hours in his workshop working on projects. After many years of service for the municipality of Matsqui/Abbotsford, he found a new love working at the MCC in Clearbrook. In keeping with Jakes’ wishes, there has been a small family service; we hope that you will share a kind thought in memory of Jake. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family who all loved him very much. In lieu of gifts or flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

It is with a profound sense of loss that we share the passing of Frances (Fran) L’Heureux, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. After an all too brief battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Fran passed peacefully on April 18th with her family by her side. She is survived by her daughters Charmaine (Wes), Nadine (Gerald), Nikki (Kevin), son Chuck (Darcy, Kristy, and Kathleen), and step-son Marc (Colette and family): grand-children Neil, Amanda, Braeden, Dustin, Aja, Kylee, Logan, Breanne, Elann, Sierra, Savannah, Cynthia and Makenzie: great-grandchildren Cassidy and Kai and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Helen Clarke, husbands, Marcel Dancoisne and Lloyd L’Heureux, son, Gary Dancoisne, sisters, Jean Steendahl and Leslie Carew, step-son Serge L’Heureux and grandson-in-law Robert Manning. Fran’s most cherished times were spent surrounded by family, whether it was picnics in the park, Sunday brunches or Christmas day. Her garden also held a sense of pride; she loved spending time nurturing its design and growth and then reaping the rewards of its peace and serenity. The community of Fort Langley had become her home away from home over the past 30 years, where she enjoyed the many lasting relationships she built there. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fort Langley Golf Course 9782 McKinnon Crescent Langley, BC on Saturday May 3rd, 2014 at 1:00 pm. Thank you to all those medical professionals who provided care and support to Fran and her family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Multiple System Atrophy Parkinson’s Society Canada.

MAYES Joan May (nee Pepper) Dec. 1, 1932 ~ April 16, 2014

Passed away after a wonderful life. Leaving her beloved husband Don, of more than 62 years, and her proudest achievement and legacy, her family. Joan was predeceased by her sister Barbara and brother Michael, and is survived by brothers David and Graham, her sister, Jane and sister-in-law Barbara who reside in England; her daughters, Joanne (Gordon) Veltkamp, Donna (Bob) Rolls; her four grandchildren, Barb, Don, Shanna and Erin; and her six great grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, Finn, Jacob, Mackenzie and Emma, with her seventh due in July. Joan was born in Leicester, England and met Don at a dance at the Aylestone Parish Hall in 1948. Don looked across the hall and seeing Joan said to his friend “that’s the one for me”. Joan and Don fulfilled a cherished dream in 1968 when the family immigrated to Vancouver. Joan loved the outdoors, camping, gardening, reading and traveling, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She leaves us with many treasured memories and we will be forever thankful for all the fine years she graced our lives. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Sunday June 8th, 1:00 pm, Langley Golf Centre, 21550 44th Ave., Langley. ........I’ll be loving you always

SCHAFER John It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our ‘much loved’ Dad, John Schafer, on Monday, April 21st at Glenwood Care Home in Agassiz, BC. Dad was born July 5, 1927 in Petrovec, Yugoslavia. He leaves behind his devoted, loving wife of 65 years, Betty Schafer and sister in Ontario, Barb Reder. Also lovingly missed by sons Michael (Linda), David (Jane) and daughters Cathy (Les), Liz (Andy) as well as grandchildren Kris, Kyle, Jamie and Callie and great-grandchildren Nathan, Brooklyn and baby Mila. Dad was predeceased by youngest child Bobby in 1980 and was forever changed. Dad touched the lives of many family and friends with his solid morals, values, integrity and ever present humour which also ensured his success in any endeavour he took on. We are very thankful for the loving, stable, secure life you gave us and will forever be proud to say you were our Dad! No service by request. Jeanne passed away peacefully at the Residence in Mission Home in Mission, BC on April 20, 2014. Jeanne will be lovingly missed by her sons Richard (Shirley), Gary (Ann), grandchildren Mike (Robbyn), James (Laura), Cameron and Emily, brother Peter (Joan), family and friends. Jeanne enjoyed the simple life. She loved to read, take walks, garden and be with her family. A truly wonderful woman. Jeanne was predeceased by her husband Glen, her parents Pierre and Marie Louise Charles, brother Justin and sisters Yvonne and Marcelle. A very special thank you to Dr. Waterloot, the wonderful caring staff at Pleasant View Care Home in Mission, whose special care of Jeanne we will be forever grateful for, and the staff at the Residence in Mission Home for all their support at our time of need.
