A young driver was injured in a crash at the Agassiz Speedway on Saturday, during the season's opening night event.

Taylor Parasiuk, 14, is reportedly doing fine and recovering at home with a slight concussion and various bruises.

Those who attended the races are commending the quick action of Agassiz's emergency responders, some of who just happened to be in the stands watching the races. The

It's not unusual for young drivers to race. Hornet racing is a basic entry level class that allows import style cars with a maximum of 4 cylinders, and racers as young as 11 race at tracks around the province.

Parasiuk was driving #17, a red and yellow 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R. She crashed in the third lap of her race.

DEFEATING DEPRESSION

Taxes will be going up for some Harrison homeowners, and down for others this year, depending on where they call home.

A single family home assessed at $317,000 (the average for Harrison this year) will be paying $2,293 in taxes. That's a $52.42 increase over last year.

However, for a strata unit assessed at $253,000, the taxes dropped from $1,845 to $1,830 a year — a $15 decrease.

The Village's director of finance, Dale Courtice, outlined this year's taxes, their 10-year plan, capital projects and revenue sources at a public meeting held at Harrison Memorial Hall Tuesday night.

Taxes are based on assessed values of properties, and in total, assessments dropped by $10 million this year, to about $3.63 million.

In Harrison, there are three property classes: residential, commercial, and recreation/ non-profit.

Residential assessments were down slightly, with single family homes dropping an average of $1,500. Business assessments dropped by 15%, while recreational and non-profit lands rose by 63%.

The majority of property tax comes from residential properties (59.3%), for a total of $1,098,250.

Each parent in a family of four needs to make $17.02 an hour in order to obtain basic needs and “maintain a decent standard of living,” says a local group.

Living Wage Fraser Valley (LWFV), hosted

by Vibrant Abbotsford, has calculated the “living wage” for the area from Abbotsford to Hope/ Boston Bar, including Mission.

A living wage is calculated based on a budget for a healthy family of four with two children aged four and seven, and each parent working 35 hours a week for 52 weeks a year.

It takes into account basic expenses such as food, housing, childcare, clothing and transportation, once government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies have been factored in.

The living wage does not consider home ownership, debt, holidays, saving for retirement or a child’s education, or caring for a disabled, ill or elderly family member.

This year’s calculation is up four per cent from the 2013 figure of $16.37.

Vibrant Abbotsford coordinator Alison Homer said the hike takes into account inflation, increased child care rates, and higher tuition fees and Medical Service Plan costs.

Homer said the calculation is released yearly to demonstrate how the real costs of living are changing in communities.

“This year, the trend continues that costs of living are rising faster

than inflation, and that wages are not following suit,” she said.

“It is progressively harder each year for families to make ends meet, with families having to spend $156 more each month than they did two years ago.”

She said the living wage is based on the premise that people who work full-time should never have to live in poverty.

Homer said it’s important for communities to support a living wage because it results in citizens having to rely less on social programs and having more disposable income to invest locally.

services such as security and janitorial – receive the living wage.

She said employee engagement and morale “went up considerably,” there has been less staff turnover, and employees

have been happier and more productive.

“Paying a living wage is just the right thing to do,” she said.

Council briefs: Water act, beaver dams, and new name Jessica Peters THE OBSERVER

Kent council will be writing a letter in support of farmers who are concerned they'll be charged for water usage if the Water Sustainability Act is passed.

The existing Water Act has been in place since 1909, and has gone through many amendments. The new act would include changes such as bringing groundwater into the licensing system.

The Agassiz Harrison Mills Drainage Committee is concerned that the new WSA will result in farmers being taxed for their water use.

Q A beaver dam within the borders of the Village of Harrison is causing a backup in the MacPherson ditch, within the boundaries of the District of Kent. When district staff asked the Village if they would remove the dam, the Village said it would not, but is permitting district staff to carry out the work.

Council agreed to the plan, with Kent taking on the costs of the dam removal.

However, they did so hesitantly, considering the beavers are likely to rebuild and they will have to go in and remove the dam again.

Council discussed whether this was a good time to coordinate with The Association for

the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals, who spoke to council in February. The association has offered to teach district staff how to build barriers for beavers, at no cost to the district.

Mick Thiessen, operations and engineering services, said that the beaver barriers "sound good in theory," but in reality are only useful in certain situations.

Q The District of Kent Fitness/ Activity Centre is no more, at least by name.

The building and its new addition will now be known as the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre. Staff said the new name is a better reflection of the types of programming to be seen on site.

Homer said 28 per cent of families with two children fall below the living wage threshold, and one out of three poor children live in families where at least one adult has a full-time job.

Businesses can become certified “living wage employers.” Currently, Vancity is the only such employer in the Fraser Valley, although Homer says there are many other businesses who also pay a living wage.

Catherine Ludgate, Vancity manager of community investment, said the company, which has 56 branches and 2,600 employees in B.C., began in 2010 ensuring that all its employees and people it contracts – for

portion at just under 4%, with $72,250.

Staff reminded the public that only just under half of the taxes collected remain in the municipality. The other half goes toward other governments.

In Harrison, the cost of policing this year is going down by $3,000 – a stark contrast to Kent, where the cost of policing contributed to higher taxes this year.

Taxes are only one piece of the budget, however, comprising about one third of the total revenue collected by the municipality. In total, the Village will collect $4.5 million in revenue through various streams, including transfers from other government ($1,973,750), DCCs ($279,800), and revenue from their own sources ($1,412,300).

The budget balances expenditures with capital,

covering off a wide array of costs —from lighting the streets to the costs of public works.

There are two main projects for the Village this year. The first is the revitalization of Esplanade, which is just about complete, was entirely paid for by RMI funds and Gas Tax revenues, and is reported to be under budget.

The second project is the complete of a new water treatment facility. That project is aided by grants from the Gas Tax agreements and the Regionally Strategic Priorities Fund.

The public asked a few questions of staff regarding the budget process. One residents asked if the pipe that has become an eyesore at Rendall Park will be fixed year.

The answer was yes, but not until after the summer. Staff has put in an application but the Ministry of Environment

requires a 120-day waiting period due to the location of the park near the water.

"That will take us right to the busy season and we don't want to be running around digging up sand then," answered Ian Gardner, operations manager.

But not all questions went so smoothly.

John Allen stated he is concerned there hasn't been enough public input into the budget. Mayor Leo Facio answered that there has been "three or four meetings" plus a special council meeting held last Thursday that the public was able to attend. The budget has not been discussed at regular council meetings, and the April 22 meeting was cancelled.

When Allen pressed the mayor on the issue, he read out the section of the community charter relating to budget requirements, which has been followed. Allen then asked for a

copy of a more detailed budget to review, and was told that he and anyone else could come to the office and request to review it there. He was then asked to give time at the microphone to others.

"There may be people here who have come for a good reason," Facio said.

"But I do have a good reason to be here," Allen said. "This falls a long way short of letting people know how their money is being spent."

Facio agreed that the "most important meetings are the budget meetings." But he also said that the Village is "lucky to have one person come out."

“A school comes with a boat but it’s hard to attract a school when we don’t have the basics.”

A boat is needed specifically for learning, as kite boarders drift downwind and need to be picked up.

When new users contact Stanek and Switzer, they have to re-direct them to schools in Squamish.

Those users may come to experience wind sports on Harrison Lake.

The society provides a port-a-potty, but they asked council to consider a grassy area, benches and the approval to erect safety signage for users. Parking is also an issue, and the society showed council how Squamish’s spit, similar to the breakwater, is wider through the middle to allow for people to sit and watch, to set up, picnic, and enjoy the day. It also frees up parking space. Currently, only a handful of vehicles can park in the area, limiting the number of people on

The District of Kent's website will soon feature a trio of slick videos to help promote the region to the world.

Heidi Lam, an archiving, data and GIS technician for the district, showed council the final versions of the videos at Monday night's meeting. She also asked for council's input on any potential changes.

Each video runs about one minute long.

The first one features Mayor John Van Laerhoven describing life in the District of Kent. The second talks about agri-tourism and features hazelnuts, tulips, cheese production and the annual Corn Festival, among other highlights. The third video

talks about the quality of life in this area.

"This is an opportunity to showcase the best the community has to offer," Lam said.

The videos were created in partnership with a company called CGI, and are designed to drive tourism and economic growth. The videos were free for the municipality, and will be funded by ad space sold by CGI. Similar videos have been created by CGI in Williams Lake, Parksville, Langley and Chilliwack, Lam said.

The District of Kent will have the use of the videos for three years, and a link on their website will direct internet users to the video.

“We are looking to build a recreational plan for the area,” Stanek said.

Wind sports may be steadily growing in popularity across the Pacific Northwest, but at Harrison Lake the numbers are dwindling.

Thousands of people visit Hood River, Ore. to learn how to windsurf and kiteboard, and the numbers are impressive at the Squamish Spit, too.

In both cases, the municipalities charge a small fee, which is funneled back into improving launch facilities.

In three years, the number of visitors to Hood River for wind sports has doubled to about 6,000.

In Squamish, $120,000 is collected annually from membership and user fees.

In Harrison, the number of members contributing to the Harrison Windsport Society has dropped from 150 to a mere 37 over the past six years, leaving the society with an operating budget of $700.

Alex Switzer and Luk Stanek directly appealed to the District of Kent for support as they try to lure back adventure sport enthusiasts.

“There are very few sites in B.C. with steady afternoon winds,” Switzer said, making the reliably windy afternoons on Harrison Lake a benefit.

It’s what made the lake a windsport destination in the past, with set up and launch off the breakwater area, on the east side of the lake, just past the marina. It’s an informal boat launch, offered for shared use by the District of Kent.

Being a public site, the Harrison Windsport Society cannot charge for usage, but they do have an honour system for membership, and in return provide advice, monitor and report the weather on their website, and try to connect new users with the proper instructors.

But they’d love to see the sport grow here, with the hopes of eventually drawing in a wind sport school.

Tadpoles added to Agassiz ecosystem Oregon spotted frogs brought in by aquarium staff The population of Oregon spotted frogs went up in Agassiz this week, following a release of the tadpoles into a local waterway.

The release was organized by the Vancouver Aquarium, who recently hatched the tadpoles from egg masses. The aquarium is part of the B.C. Oregon Spotted Frog Recovery Team, and they say the release is an “important conservation milestone for a species that is in peril in British Columbia and along the Western coast of North America.”

The location of the tadpoles is being kept secret, in an effort to ensure the tadpoles’ survival, Vancouver Aquarium told the Observer, but they are on Crown land. However, this is the fourth time the aquarium has held a release in Agassiz.

“As amphibians continue to face the largest mass extinction since the dinosaurs, propagation programs such as this one for the Oregon spotted frog are critical in the conservation of this and other endangered and threatened species,” said Dr. Dennis Thoney, Vancouver Aquarium’s director of animal operations. “There are only four wild populations of Oregon spotted frogs left in B.C., and so the continued success of our conservation efforts around

the Oregon spotted frog is key to preventing this species from disappearing altogether.”

Oregon spotted frogs have vanished from 90 per cent of their range in British Columbia. Historically, Oregon spotted frog populations had occurred throughout the Fraser Valley, from South Surrey to Hope. But loss of habitat resulting from the draining of wetlands in the Fraser River floodplain for agriculture and the conversion of agricultural land to housing and urban development, along with the arrival of invasive species, such as reed canary grass and bullfrogs, and industrial activity have decimated the populations.

the first aquarium in the world to breed this species in 2010, and has successfully bred these animals each year since then for release of tadpoles to establish wild populations. Since 2009, staff have been collecting Oregon spotted frog eggs to establish an aquarium-based assurance population.

The Recovery Team is working towards key goals of maintaining and expanding existing populations, and establishing six additional self-sustaining populations in B.C. Between 2011 and 2013, over 10,000 tadpoles and juvenile frogs produced in human care were released into suitable habitats to increase small existing populations in the wild.

Mental health issues aren’t a choice, says walk organizer THE OBSERVER

Every time celebrity speaks up about personal mental health issues, a little bit of the stigma is erased.

And it’s happening with such frequency, that it gives Andrea McRae even more hope that eventually people will see health problems like depression, anxiety and schizophrenia in the same light they diabetes, cancer or MS. But even more importantly, McRae said, every time she and her friends rally together to hold a Defeat Depression walk in Agassiz and Harrison, it lets people in this very community know that they are not alone.

“Mental health issuess are no different than physical health issues,” she said. “No one chooses to be schizophrenic any more than they chose to be diabetic.”

She said that when anyone – famous or not – comes forward to openly state they suffer from a mental health issue, everyone benefits.

“It does take someone coming out and being brave enough to do that, and that’s why these walks are

important.

Agassiz and Harrison is one of only two dozen walks across Canada planned this year. Only three of those are planned in British Columbia, with the others being in Penticton and Campbell River. The walks are a fundraiser to support the work of local non-profit organizations who provide much needed support and services for individuals and families faced with depression, mood disorders, and mental illness.

However, McRae said there is no entry fee, with the emphasis being on participation and inclusion.

“They do raise funds and people have been very generous here but it is not the primary goal,” she said.

“It’s coming out and just being together as a group.”

Signup is available beforehand online (www.defeatdepression.ca) and at the event itself.

She wants others to know that they are welcome to come out and take part by walking along with them, even if it’s just one lap of the lagoon. Others may find comfort simply by watching the event, and knowing that someone out there is rooting for them. McRae is encouraging people to create placards and

signs this year, to announce who they are walking for.

“There is hope,” she said. “You not in this bottomless pit. A lot of people with depression and mental health issues try very hard to be something they’re not. But it’s okay now to recognize that you’re depressed.”

McRae started the walk locally a few years ago, as a way to help her cope with her own mental health issues. Like many others in this community, her family has suffered through the grief of suicide.

She is hoping the walk is just one way to reach out to others in pain.

‘It would be really easy to let this event dwindle off and then it goes back into the closet,” she said. “But here we are and we aren’t going to go away.”

This year’s Defeat Depression Walk is on the morning of Sunday, May 25. Like last year, the walk will begin across from Muddy Waters at the Harrison Lagoon, and participants can take as many laps as they like. There will be music by the Harrison Highlanders and the Sam Taylor Community Singers, along with a silent auction and giveaways. news@ahobserver.com

flowers, portraits, and animals. Lis and Rose deserve this recognition as they continue to support this group even though their ages total 168 years.

They are truly mentors to everyone!

The “People’s Choice” is always a fun time but can be difficult to make a selection as there are so many talented artists. The artwork was diverse this year from Paverpol, one of a kind sculptors, to pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media.

Debating service levels What level of service should injured and sick Fraser Valley residents expect from BC Ambulance and fire services?

That's at the heart of the issue now being debated as the BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) defends a Resource Allocation Plan that has downgraded some medical emergencies from Code 3 to Code 2.

Previously, some of these emergencies were attended by ambulance and fire crews, who responded with lights and sirens at speeds above the posted speed limit. Now, only the fire department is responding with this level of service while the ambulance drives at posted speed limits and gets there later.

According to BCEHS, the change in ambulance response time has actually cut the time paramedics get to serious emergencies, which is a good thing, while slightly lengthening the time for some of these Code 2 calls, reducing the potential for accidents – and the change isn't affecting patient outcome, it says.

But local fire departments tell a different story, saying that some of these calls are taking up to half an hour or longer, and in Coquitlam it was reported that people got so fed

The cities argue this service change is downloading, pure and simple, so that instead of increasing resources to enable ambulances to handle the growing demand for service as the population increases and ages, the province is merely reducing some services to hold the line on costs elsewhere.

But here's the thing: Should firefighters stop attending these calls, too?

That's what BCEHS says, arguing that cities should adopt the same level of service, then there wouldn't be any concerns about downloading.

But this argument ignores the fact that residents pay for and have come to expect a certain level of service, and if firefighters adopt the same service model as the ambulance, the cities will catch heat.

After all, a patient in severe pain may not be dying, but shouldn't they get a quick response to hospital?

Once again, the cities are saddled with the costs and the responsibilities of a senior level of government. And that's just painful. Quick, call an ambulance. Wait … don't bother.

Inconvenient truth of pine beetle B.C. VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA – Last week’s column on Earth Day myths attracted a fair amount of criticism.

One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so.

This fact blows another hole in the carefully crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems.

That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C.

coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen from space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas that comes up with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline.

Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government.

B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years.

In 2012 I participated in a B.C. forests ministry tour of facilities where hardy seedlings are grown for reforestation. Test plantings were also underway to see if the range of southern tree species is shifting northward due to climate

change.

During the bus ride, I asked the province’s top forest scientists if Campbell was right. The answer?

Conventional wisdom on the latest outbreak holds that it spread so far because of a lack of cold winters, attributed to human carbon emissions.

I grew up in northern B.C., and my last two visits to the Peace country were both in January.

In 2004 I recall changing planes on the tarmac of Prince George airport, moving briskly in the daytime temperature near -40 C. That night, and subsequent nights, the mercury dropped to -50 C. talk about the end of cold winters in northern B.C. because of global warming, it’s difficult to square with personal experience.

I can hear the rebuttals already.

It takes long periods of extreme cold to kill the pine beetle. How long? Longer than those ones, of course.

Similarly flexible theories are being advanced to explain the 17-year “pause” in Earth’s average surface temperature rise, the growing Antarctic ice sheet, and this past winter’s “polar vortex.”

If anyone has substantial evidence that CO2 from human activity was the trigger mechanism for the latest beetle outbreak in B.C., I’d like to see it. But please, spare me the affirmations of quasireligious faith that often pass for climate change arguments today.

I will start my story with the death of my husband. When he was diagnosed four years ago I started "dipping" into his oxy for my back pain which seemed to get worse with stress.

I took them for over four years and felt numb. I recently took myself off of the meds including hydromorphine. I didn't realize how addicted I was until I stopped all of it two months ago.

Withdrawal was a living hell but worth the sacrifice. I feel so much better and am learning to deal with my back pain in other ways. I turn on the music or meditate in my hot tub.

Exercise is a big bonus as well.

These drugs destroy your liver and kidneys and they just make life worse. Contact your doctor for a safe way to go through the withdrawal. I didn't do that

and suffered and it can be very dangerous. I hope I can save just one person.

I found a young man laying on the side of the road last week overdosed it is such a reminder what all of these drugs can do to you. Think before you take one and be safe.

As a priority rule and not as a half-assed effort, they should be collected and spayed or neutered; perhaps their eventual great reduction in number will then translate into proper appreciation or at least respect as sentient life.

Pipeline can be operated safely

We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations. Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely.

Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia.

This way we know the tankers will be state-ofthe-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in BC so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on Northern Gateway next month.

Ready your car for spring and summer travel The return of warm weather marks the return of road trips for millions of motorists across the country. Whether going to the beach or heading off to parts unknown, hitting the open road with the windows down is a timehonoured tradition for drivers of all ages.

But such road trips can prove disastrous if drivers don’t take the right steps to prepare their vehicles for spring and summer travel. The following are a few ways motorists can ensure their car is ready to tackle the open road.

Q Tighten things up. Loose parts, such as exhaust clamps, license plates, and interior trim panels, can create rattles and cause parts to get damaged or fall off. What’s more, rattling sounds can be a noisy nuisance for drivers and passengers alike.

Did you know you have the power to boost your child’s learning potential just by making books an integral part of your daily life?

We know that reading to them is important but sometimes in our busy schedules and day to day routines reading to our children might get put to the side.

Perhaps after understanding some of the benefits your child receives from reading on a regular basis you will have a renewed sense for committing to reading with your child and on your own. Although there are many benefits to reading to children of

all ages this list is comprised of the benefits targeting children of two to five years of age.

1. A stronger relationship.

As your child grows from baby to toddler and gaining new found independence snuggle time is decreased. How do you gain back some of that lost snuggle time? Reading together. Reading becomes a nurturing activity of physical touch, a calm presence and interactive dialogue. This is where the bond between the two of you will grow and give your child a sense of well being and the feeling of being loved.

2. Academic excel-

lence.

Studies have shown that children who are read to on a consistent basis have a higher propensity for learning. Students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all areas of formal education. Studies have shown children who are read to every day are a year a head of those who are read to infrequently.

3. Learning basic speech skills.

During the ages of two and five, your child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. By listening to you read your child is picking up the ba-

sic sounds that form speech. There is also a clear difference between conversing with a child and reading to him or her. Language in books is more complete, richer and more intricate than the common spoken word and therefore book language is more educational.

4. The basics of how to read a book.

Your child will learn how to hold a book, know the front from the back, read from left to right, turn pages from left to right and know that pictures are separate from the words.

These are all essential preliteracy skills.

5. Better communication skills.

So now that you know how reading is beneficial to your child are you going to commit some time every day to read to him or her?

The best way to do

this is to find a time in your busy schedule and make it a part of your routine. One of the best times is just before bed when you want your child to settle down from the busy day and relax. It sets the tone for a dreamy night. As your children get older this routine of bonding by reading may turn into a bonding time of conversation and learning about their lives.

Another valuable way to fit reading in to your life is during your down time or waiting time. Many companies around Agassiz have adopted butterfly book bins for their waiting rooms. The books in these bins are meant for all ages. If you have a child and you are waiting to be served please look for the butterfly book bin and read to your child. This impromptu reading will benefit you and your child as well as those observing. If you have not finished the book and you want to read more take the book home and finish it there. These books are meant for you. When you are done you can keep the book, give it back to one of the butterfly bins all around Agassiz, or replace it with another one. Reading should be accessible to everyone. Lets all get caught reading!

Children who are exposed to reading tend to view reading as fun and not an unpleasant task. They are also more likely to go to reading instead of TV or video games for entertainment as they grow older.

Your child will be able to relate parts of stories to his/her life and give it meaning. He/she will also learn the fundamentals of right and wrong.

7. Understand new experiences.

As your child starts to encounter stressful situations and milestones such as going to school or the dentist, sharing a relevant story can ease their stress. Your child will understand his/ her emotions are normal. Children can learn about new experiences, relationships and personalities in a safe place with someone they can trust.

Junior football team aims to inspire pride Valley Huskers have struggled in recent years, but new coach hopes to turn things around Eric Welsh BLACK PRESS

New Valley Huskers bench boss Adam Smith has spent the last few months telling anyone who’ll listen that things are different.

That he’s passionate and committed to building a football team that inspires pride on and off the field.

That the days of being the BC Football Conference punching bag are coming to an end.

He’s also said, all along, that words mean nothing and people will only believe it when they see it.

Spring camp (May 2-4) is his first chance to prove that things are changing, and he’s starting with the theory that bigger isn’t necessarily better.

“We’re going a little smaller this year, not inviting as many kids up,” the coach said. “We want more interaction with the players who do come.

We’ve got a lot more parents coming up this year as well, and what we want is more one on one meetings with them.”

That’s a switch.

In year’s past, coaches used numbers as a gauge for suc-

cess. More players at spring camp meant recruiting had gone well.

“Instead of bringing out 90 and signing 20, we’re looking at 55-60 kids with the hope of signing 40-45 of them,” Smith said. “The individual meetings are the big thing, to see how they feel about us and let them know how we feel about them.

And we want their parents to be a big part of this.”

Smith has spent much of his offseason on local recruiting, developing a network of contacts in Abbotsford, Mission and surrounding areas.

“Considering how bad our past has been, we’ve gotten a much better response from the local kids than we thought we would,” Smith said. “I thought we were about a year away from that, that we needed to show them something first.”

Rather than hide from the team’s dismal history, Smith and Husker general manager Moe Agagnier have tackled it head on.

“Myself and Moe sit down and we address all of the bad stuff players and parents may have heard about,” Smith said.

“But then we go on, tell them about our plan and passion, and how we’ll change things to finally be successful. Some parents and players think something special is starting out here, and some are still iffy. And that’s understandable, because we haven’t done anything yet.”

tion to overcome, Smith could be forgiven for kowtowing to prospects – begging them to give Chilliwack a chance.

He doesn’t do that.

Smith said he’s already turned away promising recruits because he didn’t believe their intentions were true.

“Are you coming here because you can’t go anywhere

else, ‘So let’s come to Chilliwack. At least I can make that team,’” Smith asked. “We don’t want that kind of attitude coming in. I get emails from some players that are basically, ‘What can you do for me if I come out to play?’ I’ve sent a few emails back asking, ‘What can you do for us?’

The compressed nature of spring camp, with three practices and a scrimmage, makes it easy to pick out two types.

“You’ll see the high football IQ guys who may not be the best athletes, but they catch on to systems right away and don’t make mistakes,” Smith said. “And you’ll be able to spot the athletes right away.

They may not learn as quick, but you’ll see him making plays because he’s quicker, faster, stronger.”

Smith hopes to spot a third group, the natural leaders.

“He’ll do anything to help his team win,” Smith said, describing the type he calls diamonds in the rough. “He’s at practice first. Leaves last.

Knows the playbook inside and out. He may not be the best player, but he’s the type who gets respect. Every team needs some of those.”

David Lindley has long championed the concept of world music and will continue in his support of this evershifting and evolving genre, as the featured performer at the third annual Harrison Festival Society Fundraiser, being held Saturday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m., at the historic Harrison Memorial Hall.

“We felt Lindley was a great choice for this year’s fundraiser because of his deep connection to world music, which fits well with the Festival mandate and programming,” says Andy Hillhouse, Harrison Festival Society Artistic Director.

The Harrison Festival Society, known worldwide for its professional artistry and small town hospitality has long been a beacon for growing acceptance of diversity and purpose fueled programming.

Festival of the Arts in 1985 the Society has consistently presented the best in Canadian and International performing and visual arts both for the annual July Festival and the Season of Performing Arts running from September to May each year.

Throughout his long and distinguished career, Lindley has been one of Hollywood’s most in-demand session musicians, lending his skills to the recorded works of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby and Nash, Warren Zevon and many others.

“What is really interesting about Lindley is that, while he has achieved this fame, he is someone who never rested on his laurels but has continued to grow on his own distinct musical path.” says Hillhouse.

A native of southern California, Lindley first took up the banjo as a teenager and subsequently won the annual Topanga Canyon banjo and fiddle competition five times. Between 1967 and 1970 Lindley founded and led what must now be seen as the first world music rock
