Breaking down barriers: mental health Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
“If they pursue this in the courts the city will end up paying legal fees, funded by taxpayers, just to set a taxation rate that is in line with other B.C. communities,” Laidlaw said. “It is unfortunate that TimberWest, as a corporate taxpayer, has taken this action against council policy, which aims to set an equitable tax rate for managed forest lands, phased in over three years.” Terry Francis, operations manager with TimberWest, said the company believes the city is in the wrong and is legally restricted from setting the tax rate for managed forest lands
No one is immune from mental illness, says suicide awareness advocate Barbara Swanston. “Mental illness is still very much misunderstood and there is a lot of stigma surrounding it,” Swanston says. “Yet one-in-four people will experience a mental illness.” For Swanston, the statistic is one that’s close to her heart. Since Swanston’s son Terry took his own life four years ago – at the age of 29 – Swanston has been a champion for mental health awareness and for encouraging people to “come out from the shadows,” speak up about their feelings and seek help. As part of her efforts, Swanston is hosting an open discussion at the Campbell River library on May 5, 6:30 p.m., as part of Mental Health Awareness month. She will be joined by Victoria Broker who lives with mental illness every day but is thriving with proper treatment. Swanston says the talk is aimed at breaking down barriers and overcoming the stigma and lack of understanding that prevents many people from seeking treatment. “Victoria and I want to facilitate an open conversation which will help shine a light on our beliefs, misconceptions and the stigma,” Swanston says. “We want to help open people’s hearts so they can open their minds to the reality that everyone has mental health – if you have a brain you have mental health – and no one is

TimberWest victory could cost taxpayers Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
If TimberWest wins its tax challenge against the city, Campbell River homeowners could see another tax increase. Council approved a 2.92 per cent residential tax increase in January, which equates to an extra $41 for the average assessed home at $256,600, but that could change. It all depends on whether TimberWest is successful in its B.C. Supreme Court challenge against the city raising taxes on managed forest lands.
Dennis Brodie, the city’s finance operations supervisor, said if TimberWest wins, those extra taxes will have to be made up by residents. “In the event that this increase was removed from Class 7 (managed forest lands) and shifted to the residential class it would result in an approximate $2 increase to the average house, bringing the overall residential tax increase to 3.07 per cent or $43,” Brodie wrote in a report to city council. In January, council increased managed forest land taxes to $2.29 per thousand dollars of assessed value to the provincial average of
$13.98, a total tax increase to Class 7 of $27,468 to be phased in over three years. City staff have prepared tax rates bylaw for 2014 already and council was expected to pass the bylaw, which includes the managed forest lands increase, at its Tuesday council meeting after the Mirror went to press. City Manager Andy Laidlaw appealed to TimberWest in March to reconsider its tax challenge, saying it would hurt Campbell River taxpayers if the forest products company went through with its petition.

Mirror brings home gold in newspaper excellence
T
he Campbell River Mirror brought home gold at the 2014 British Columbia and Yukon Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards on Saturday night. The Newspaper Excellence Award is the highest achievement a community newspaper can receive at the provincial level. The Mirror won in the Category E (28,001-47,000) circulation class. Judges scored on a variety of categories including front page, community news content, editorial and opinion, local features, sports, arts and entertainment overall design and appearance, photography, production quality, advertising content and design and classified advertising.
The MA Murray judges had this to say about the Campbell River Mirror: “The Mirror provides a very stylish and comprehensive look at its community, and in doing so, serves its market very well. It is in every sense a strong community newspaper that attracts good advertising support. Excellent photography and good listings of local events. The Mirror is Built to last.” This is the second major award the Mirror has brought home to Campbell River this year. Earlier this month the Canadian Newspaper Awards announced the Mirror earned first place among all community newspapers in Canada for Young Reader Engagement Initiative with the weekly feature “Carihi Mirror..”

immune to the possibility of mental illness.” During the month of May, the Canadian Mental Health Association wants people to ask themselves, are you ‘phine’ or ‘fine’? Fine is saying you’re fine and you are while phine is saying you’re fine when you’re really not. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, everyone has mental health but not everyone has good mental health – a state of well-being “in which you realize your own abilities, can work and study productively and are able to make a contribution to your family and community.” Swanston says because
of the stigma, too many people are often afraid or ashamed to admit they don’t have good mental health. “Too often people claim to be feeling fine when they do not,” she says. “The result? Approximately seven million Canadians – 20 per cent of the population – live with mental illness. And many do not seek treatment because of the stigma and discrimination associated with mental health problems. “We want to use Canadian Mental Health Association’s platform to build awareness around mental health issues and help change people’s attitudes and behaviours towards mental health and mental illness

higher than the rate that logging company Merrill and Ring is charged for its managed forest lands. Al Kenning, a financial consultant who has been working for the city, said
the rate for Merrill and Ring lands is set by a provincial order that specifically only applies to that company and does not apply to TimberWest. If TimberWest is successful in its challenge,
it will be for the second time. In 2009 TimberWest took the city to court and Madam Justice Gerow ruled that $1.21 million was unlawfully levied by the city on TimberWest.

The injury – a broken bone in the bird’s right wing – is typical for this time of year. “It’s probably the most common injury we see, especially depending on when they’re flying, what’s going on, and when they’re roadside,” he explained. “It seems to be this time of year. The birds are going through their mating rituals, and adults are watching and challenging for territory.” The bird was caught and is under the care of the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) in Merville, which works with Gastis to assess injured wildlife and rehabilitate them for eventual release back into the wild. Mayor says boundary extension is a ‘bad deal’
www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The city’s proposal to extend its southern boundary is a “bad deal” for everybody involved, according to Mayor Walter Jakeway. The mayor, who didn’t weigh in during the April 15 council meeting when councillors voted to proceed with the boundary adjustment, is speaking up now in opposition. “Why would Campbell River taxpayers, who are already paying much more tax than the Area D folks, want to pay another $24 per year for Area D to have sewers?” Jakeway said. “City council’s initiative to incorporate
portions of Area D into Campbell River, with the main purpose of extending sewer services, is a bad deal for both Area D and city taxpayers.” Myriah Foort, the city’s finance manager, told council last week that extending the city’s southern boundary to provide 535 northern Area D residents with sewer service will put the city $3.9 million into debt. Campbell River taxpayers would be expected to pay an extra $24 a year in user fees for 20 years to pay off that debt. Jakeway said he would prefer to see the city extend its sewer system to parts of the city that aren’t currently serviced,
such as north towards Race Point Road near Seymour Narrows. “The city development focus should be west and north to allow under-serviced areas to catch up,” he said. Meanwhile, Area D residents Stan Zuke and D’Arcy de Hart are appealing to the Strathcona Regional District for assistance in maintaining their rural neighbourhoods and lifestyle. “Any help that you can provide to secure Area D’s future in SRD (Strathcona Regional District) would be appreciated,” wrote Zuke and de Hart in a letter to the regional district board. . Mayor Jakeway said
it’s clear many Area D residents don’t want city sewers and when and if the time comes that they change their minds, they can approach the city. “When Area D residents want to join the city to get sewer connection, they can ask,” Jakeway said. “Until then, the city has many neighbourhoods within our existing borders that are overdue for attention (such as) Campbellton, North Campbell River, and Quinsam Heights.” The city is holding a public open house on its boundary extension proposal May 6 at Ocean Grove Elementary from 5-8 p.m.
Tax break on user fees expected KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell River taxpayers are expected to get a modest break on user fees thanks to a new recycling program. When Multi-Material BC (MMBC) takes over recycling operations from the city May 19, the nonprofit society will provide the city with a financial incentive for handing over the recycling reins. That money will be put towards reducing user
fees which are paid for by Campbell River homeowners with their property tax bill. Dennis Brodie, the city’s finance operations supervisor, said the money will reduce the total user fees associated with solid waste charges from $203 to $189. “Staff have determined that the net Multi-Material BC funding represents a reduction of the recycling fee of $14 per household,” Brodie wrote in a report to city council. “One call, and we’ll do it all”

“The total MMBC funds to be received in 2014 are $214,330.” And he added that next year the savings for residential taxpayers could be even greater than $14. “The solid waste user fee may decrease again in 2015 as a result of the MMBC subsidy because the subsidy will be received in full in 2015 instead of being prorated due to the May launch of the new program in 2014,” Brodie said. The new program is a

result of new provincial legislation that requires recycling costs to be transferred from the taxpayer and city governments to the producers of recyclable materials. Businesses that produce such material are required to sign up for a fee with MMBC or another stewardship program. Stubborn or mentally ill? Elderly man remains behind bars PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
All that Webster Nicol needs to do is sign a basic court release document and he can walk out of jail. But the 70-year-old man won’t sign and so he lingers in a detention cell at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre in Victoria. “I refused to sign and I have the right to be released,” Nicol demanded on Monday in
Campbell River provincial court. On March 30, the Victoria resident was arrested in Campbell River. It’s alleged he was driving a stolen vehicle and refused to provide a breath sample to RCMP. Following his arrest, police were prepared to release him on conditions and a promise to appear in court, but Nicol refused to sign the documents. That led to an overnight stay at the RCMP
two residents who live in the same Victoria apartment complex. “All you have to do is sign,” said Judge Roderick Sutton, urging him to sign again on Monday. However, in spite of best efforts to get him to sign by police, two judges, the Crown prosecutor and his own lawyer, Nicol has steadfastly refused. He also denies being afflicted by schizophrenia and says he doesn’t take any medication.
detachment and a court appearance the next day. Howe ver, he still wouldn’t sign the papers the next day in court and insisted on being represented by defence lawyer Angie Penhall. She did represent Nicol at another hearing on April 1, where Judge Peter Doherty granted his release, again on the condition he sign the order. The order instructs Nicol to keep the peace, see a probation officer and to stay away from
hall told the judge she has tried, without success, to assist Nicol and asked to be removed from the case. Prosecutor Adrienne Venturini has “no desire” to keep Nicol locked up, but there’s little she can do if he won’t sign the release document. She also suggested it would benefit to get a proper mental fitness evaluation. Nicol is charged with possession of property obtained by crime and refusing to provide a
However, there are signs he may not be mentally well. During Monday’s hearing by video, Penhall was in the Campbell River courtroom to represent her client, but Nicol did not recognize her. “This person is an impostor!” he said while looking directly at Penhall. He went on to describe Penhall as 5’11” with curly blonde hair while she is, in fact, several inches shorter and has dark brown hair. Pen-

breath sample. He called the charges “bogus,” claimed he’s being held against his rights and demanded his unconditional release. Judge Sutton declined and reiterated the conditions “aren’t very onerous.” Nicol is due back in court, by video, on May 5, to set a trial date. Nicol is the author of “New Light From the Bible,” described on the Amazon website as a personal account of his own religious experiences.

Our View
A whale of a decision It’s not often a good news story turns out to be a bad news story. Such appears to be the case with the humpback whale. Earlier this week, the federal government announced it intended to We say: Feds’ downgrade the status of the humpback downgrade of whale from threatened to species of humpback whales concern. That’s good news. The north Pacific population a mixed blessing of humpback whales was listed as threatened in 1985. Given the Conservative government’s apparent dislike for anything that contributes to the preservation of the natural
world, the initial knee-jerk reaction was to view the downgrading of the humpback’s status with cynicism. But the government’s decision to downgrade the humpback whale’s status came on the recommendation of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. COSEWIC, made up of experts, including university researchers and biologists from provincial and federal agencies, made the determination after considering evidence from extensive population monitoring over the last several decades. Downgrading the status of the humpback means time and money can be applied to helping other species recover.
But interest groups, such as the Living Oceans Society, view the government’s decision as just another stone on the highway to giving the Northern Gateway pipeline the green light. A cynical view, but given the haste exhibited by the federal government in downgrading the humpback, the view has gained traction. That’s bad news. The only way the federal government can alleviate that cynicism is to exhibit similar haste when COSEWIC recommends the humpback whale should once again be placed on the list of threatened species. A penny saved isn’t always a penny earned. – Black Press

● “Coast Guard fills in for ferry during medical evacuation of Quadra woman” – April 25 Eva van Loon · Powell River, British Columbia Three thousand dollars? To use the equivalent of a public highway to get to the hospital to be taken care of by MSP? In that position, I would have to choose death. Hayley Kelland · Grant Park High School Until a family member of a MP or a family member of BC ferries CEO has a medical emergency on Quadra ... they won’t get it and they won’t care. It’s easy for them to pretend they care, but if it doesn’t directly affect them ... they truly don’t. Eric Macdonald · Carihi Secondary School “Abram said if that’s the case then “Transport Canada needs to be hauled out from under the carpet and told ‘you are risking lives.’” You got this completely wrong Jim. These ferry vessels are a lot more complex than your everyday car or truck. Transport Canada has determined that a minimum of 7 crew members are required to safely run the ferry. An emergency does not mean we should throw safety to the wind. You shouldn’t drive a car drunk, even if it’s an emergency, and you shouldn’t operate a ferry with less than the minimum crew. Doing so puts not only the person(s) needing medical attention at risk, it also puts the responding crews lives at risk. Asking Transport Canada to review if the ferry could safely run with less than 7 crew members would be perfectly acceptable, but hauling them out from under the red carpet? I try to support the Quadra Island residents who are upset with BC Ferries over cut sailings, and I fully agree that they...are being punished with these cost saving route cuts because BC ferries has been horribly mismanaged for years...hauling out Transport Canada over safety regulations makes supporting you increasingly difficult.
A Kitimat refinery is the best solution for Canada Part II
David Black
Owner, Black Press
This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime. The oil industry wants to export Alberta bitumen to Asia via tankers. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on
the bottom of our seabed. The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits: ■ There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction, there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words, the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and, if so, it will emit double the CO2 of our new design.
This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the BC Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery. ■ An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of very dirty coke (much fouler than B.C. coal) which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power. The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada. ■ Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years. Operations at the refinery will result in more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in B.C. with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the
refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition, there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province. ■ The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year. Unfortunately, our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to put my money where my mouth is, so I am doing that. We have a solid business plan for a profitable refinery

and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. everyone to see on Canadian and US government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada. In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-ofthe-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will
be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea. Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that car-

Opening Night Over The River and Through The Woods opens tomorrow night at the Rivercity Players Stage at 1080 Hemlock St. Nick’s (Andy Peterson) grandparents will do their best to keep their grandson from taking a promotion on the other side of the country, including inviting a beautiful dinner guest to the family’s weekly Sunday dinner. Two of the grandparents are played by Barrie Darnell and Denise ComeauDarnell. The other set of grandparents (played by Gail Tisdale as Emma, and Stu Morrison as Frank) host each week’s dinner, where the four old-timers love to talk, debating at which grocery store a certain pointless anecdote took place, or employing extremely circular deduction skills to remember who starred in High Noon. ■ Tickets are $15 and available at Impressions, Comfort Zone Foods, or Campbell River Laundromat in the Tyee Plaza. Play dates are May 1-3, May 4 matinee and May 7-10.

At the library tomorrow: author tells her tale of 19 months of living wild Set in the Broughton Archipelago — a maze of isolated islands off the coast of British Columbia — Becoming Wild: Living the Primitive Life on a West Coast Island is a story of survival in the pristine wilderness. Sometimes predator and sometimes prey, 29-year-old Nikki van Schyndel puts her survival training to the test, fending off the harsh weather, hungry wildlife, threat of starvation and the endless perils of this rugged Raincoast – for 19 months! Told in a voice that is both familiar and vulnerable, Becoming Wild explores our innate longings to connect with nature
and revert to a pure, Eden-like state. Nikki van Schyndel will be sharing stories of her experience on Thursday, May 1, at the Campbell River Library, at 6:30 p.m. An engaging speaker, van Schyndel will share stories of her experience, how she relied on her knowledge of BC’s coastal flora and fauna, and the ancient techniques of hunting and gathering to survive, making clothes from cedar bark and taking great joy in gobbling a fish tail whole. van Schyndel also complements her talk with a slideshow presentation and examples of some of the things she made, from cedar bark
clothing to fish hooks. Here is what Jon Young (Wilderness Awareness School; Kamana. org) says “Becoming Wild is a must read for anyone concerned about the future of people and the natural world...Nikki’s heartfelt and transparent self-discovery, reconciliation and renegotiation with self, others and the offerings of our world is a model all can benefit from. Chris Czajkowski, author of Cabin at Singing River (Raincoast Books) says “These lessons have enriched their lives in a way that few would understand: this wellwritten book goes a long way towards enriching ours.”
MANAGING YOUR MONEY When the rubber hits the retirement road be 4x10 sure your financial tires are fully inflated Chris Nagle
B.Comm, MBA Division Director
Whether your retirement begins tomorrow or somewhere down the road, the time to begin real retirement planning is now – especially when it comes to ensuring you’ll have the retirement income you need to realize all your retirement dreams. Here’s your retirement planning quick start guide. 1. Decide when your want to retire If you decide to retire ‘early’ you’ll have fewer years to save for retirement. If you retire after 65, you can continue the tax-saving, income-building advantages of investments held in your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) until the end of the year in which you turn 71. 2. Decide on your retirement lifestyle Will you keep working at least part of the time, or even start a business? If so, you can save less in advance because even a little extra employment income can go a long way. 3. Conduct a retirement/ income analysis Estimate your monthly retirement living expenses like utilities, insurance and mortgage
payments. Also consider additional costs such as travel, hobbies, and other forms of entertainment. 4. Know your government sources of income Find out how much income you can expect from government sources like the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) or the Québec Pension Plan (QPP) and Old Age Security (OAS). Get good info at http://www. servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ services/pensions/infocard/ janmar14.shtml.
7. Do the math Add up all sources of monthly retirement income including your savings and investment withdrawals. Compare this against your estimate of monthly retirement living expenses. If you come up short, you may need to rethink your planned retirement lifestyle, ramp up your savings strategies, or both. 8. Aim to manage taxes in retirement Strategies can include income or pension splitting with your spouse, sharing CPP/QPP benefits, and investing in a taxadvantaged mutual fund-based Monthly Income Portfolio.
Investors Group 5. Know your pension at work – if you have one Determine whether your employer-provided pension plan is a defined benefit plan or a defined contribution plan. If it’s a defined benefit plan the Pension Administrator can give you a monthly benefit payout estimate. If it’s a defined contribution plan, you’ll have to do your own estimate of monthly pension. 6. Add in your savings Know what you can expect from investments held in your Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA), RRSP and other investments. Also know the rules governing the withdrawal of income and the taxes that may be applied.
9. Get professional advice Now that you know exactly what you want in retirement, meet with your professional advisor to develop a plan that will ensure you are adequately prepared for the costs of your retirement. This column, written and published by Investors Group Financial Services Inc. Michael Layland, the author of The Land of Heart’s Delight: Early Mapes and Charts of Vancouver Island will speak at the Campbell River library on Friday at 6 p.m.
How many words is a map worth?
The doors open. The past comes alive! The Land of Heart’s Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island, an informative and fascinating compilation of the early maps of Vancouver Island, will be presented by author Michael Layland on Friday evening, May 2, at 6 p.m. at the Campbell River library. His book shows local cartographic milestones marking progress in our knowledge through the Island’s rich – although comparatively short – recorded history. The
a c c omp any i ng te x t reveals the motives, constraints, agendas, and intrigues that underpin their making. “A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. How many, then, is a map worth, for it often contains far more information?” asks Derek Hayes, author of British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas. This book has been shortlisted for awards including the BC Book Prize: The Bill Duthie B ooksellers’ Choice Award and will be available for sale and signing
by the author. Come and meet this renowned author, a Royal Engineer, wellknown for his historical writing about BC, and a member of numerous British Columbia historical societies. Maybe he will answer the questions that have been an engima for years. Or, perhaps your own family’s area of origin will become known to you in a new way. This event is free, sponsored by VIRL, funded by Still Water Books and Art and the Writers’ Union of Canada.

Carihi finishes 2nd The Carihi girls are hosting the North Island soccer finals on Monday. Last Thursday and Friday, Carihi also hosted the annual Investors Cup Challenge and finished runners-up to a powerhouse squad from Victoria’s Stelly’s. In spite of the loss in the final, the local girls played a strong tournament. They opened with
a 4-1 win over Kelowna, spanked St. Patrick’s of Vancouver 6-2, and edged the Brooks ‘A’ squad of Powell River 2-1 in the semi-final. On the other side of the draw, Stelly’s chalked up victories over Panorama, Ballenas and Dover Bay to advance to the final. Stelly’s won last year’s Investor’s Cup and the team followed up with
a dominating 4-0 victory over the host team. Stelly’s scored all its goals in the first half and used several substitutes in the final 35 minutes of regulation. The North Island tournament takes place Monday on the Carihi lower fields and will determine seeding for the Island Championships on May 13-14, in Nanaimo.

After six months of snow and lots of rain, this Saturday, marks the start of the 2014 Saratoga Speedway race year. Last season saw lots of new records set in both car counts and in fan counts, with 2014 looking to be no different. The 2014 race schedule promises to bring even more actionpacked with the addition of more Drifting, Drag Racing, and the first ever Saratoga Speedway Drive-in move night. Opening night will feature every racing class: Crash to Pass, Hornets, Bombers, Roadrunners, Figure 8s and the IMCA Modifieds will all be competing for double points to be capped off by an amazing fireworks display. The Monster Trucks will make their first appearance of the year on the May long weekend. Last year, the Drifting class was introduced to the Speedway, and within the first few nights, made an immediate impression wowing the crowds with some amazing drifting abilities. The first three rounds of drifting will take place May 10, 24th and 31st.
The annual car tossing competition happens June 7. Last year’s winning toss was 45 feet! The Wilroc Sprint cars will make three appearances this season, on June 21, accompanied by the Dwarfs, Bombers and IMCA Modifieds. The sixth annual Bikini Contest will be held July 5. Brooke Bella from Courtenay took home the win in last years contest and will be looking to repeat. The first-ever Motor Home jump will also take place July 5. Big Rig Highway Thunder make its return July 19, while the crowd favourite Crash to Pass Boat Race – the only one this season – takes place Aug. 16. The first-ever Drive-in Movie night will be held Aug. 20 – a Wednesday – with the proceeds going to a local cause. The annual Canadian-American Demolition Derby will return Aug. 30-31. Team Canada took home the title last year. Finally the year will be finished with yet another amazing fireworks and the championships. Visit the new website at www.saratogaracing.ca

Avoiding jail leads to more time behind bars

Joseph Galligos’ desire to stay out of jail had led him right back behind bars. The 25-year-old Campbell River man has a long criminal record with convictions for assault, sexual interference, robbery, break and enter, obstruction and 28 counts of breaching court orders. Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard called it an “atrocious record” for breaches and asked Judge Roderick Sutton for Galligos’ detention. Galligos was in Campbell River provincial court for a Monday afternoon bail hearing after being arrested for not showing up to serve an intermittent jail sentence. On March 10, Galligos received a 30-day sentence for another breach conviction. However, he got a break by being able to serve the sentence on weekends.
He was supposed to turn himself into the RCMP detachment on March 14, but didn’t show up. Police finally caught up with Galligos on March 22, when he was found drunk down-
town. At the time, Galligos was still on another bail order that doesn’t allow him to consume alcohol. He appeared in court March 24, and was ordered to serve his

30 days as straight time, plus another 15 days for breaching the no-alcohol provision. He served that time in Victoria, was released April 22, and arrested again for another breach,
this one for not showing up to serve the intermittent jail sentence. Defence lawyer Sarah Runyon acknowledged G a l l i go s’ “d i f f i c u lt record,” but asked for his release. She said he needs
“something to do” when he’s out of jail other than hanging around with other friends with criminal records and drinking. Galligos, she said, wants to enter an aboriginal training program,
but it doesn’t begin until June. Judge Sutton wasn’t convinced Galligos could keep on the “straight and narrow” and ordered his detention. His next court date is May 5.

Call before you dig! Springtime marks the unofficial start of gardening season across British Columbia. It’s also traditionally the time of year when FortisBC receives a spike in the number of calls to repair damage to its underground natural gas pipes. According to FortisBC, 99 per cent of the damage to its natural gas system is caused by third parties such as construction crews, contractors and homeowners. Last year, 268 Campbell River residents called BC One Call, but there were still damage to eight different pipelines. If you’re the one who caused the damage, you could be on the hook for the entire cost of the repairs. Call 1-800-474-6886, *6886 from a mobile phone, or visit bconecall. bc.ca
