DID YOU KNOW? The red building on our Trethewey House Heritage Site was originally the Upper Sumas BC Electric Railway station. The station’s original location was on the corner of Vye and Lamson roads. The Railway Line, which skirted the southern shore of Sumas Lake, was completed from New Westminster to Chilliwack in 1910. The back of the station rested on a stilt construction and railway tracks along Sumas Lake were raised due to flooding in times of high water.

The beauty of Bhangra Recognized as the man who enlivened a new movement of bhangra music, the multi-talented Punjabi star, Babbu Maan is performing at the Abbotsford Centre on April 20. Born in India in the village of Khant Maanpur, Maan became very fond of music early in his life, and sang onstage for the first time at the age of seven. After years of learning how to write lyrics and honing his performance skills, he recorded his first album at 23. Now, as a singer-songwriter, actor and producer, Mann has remained busy since bursting onto the Punjabi mainstream in the late ‘90s. He debuted his album Sajjan Ruman De Giya in 1998, but was unhappy with the outcome and rewrote many of the songs. He followed it with the release of his first official debut album Tu Meri Miss India in 1999, which sold well in both India and abroad. However, it wasn’t until his third album Saaun Di Jhadi (2001) that his career took off, selling over 10 million copies in India and overseas.
He has since released a total of eight additional studio albums, six compilation albums and contributed to numerous Bollywood film soundtracks.
Maan is sure to bring his wide range of musical and performing talents to the stage. In summer 2013, Maan released Talaash: In Search Of Soul, his first album to break the Billboard 200 charts. His newest album release, the second volume of Aah Chak 2014, is being met with growing acclaim and enthusiasm.
Maan began incorporatting acting into his repertoire re soon after launching his s music career, and in 2003 3 was selected as an actor and d music director for the highly successful movie Hawayein. Maan went on to co-write and d act in various other Punjabi bi films, including the biggest filmography accomplishment of his career, Maan’s own feature, “Hashar…A ar…A Love Story.” Maan is sure to bring his wide range of musical and performing talents to the Abbotsford Centre stage, e, and will impress spectators with the e beauty of bhangra.

STEPS: 1. Position yourself straight on in the mirror. 2. Tilt your chin upwards and look down into the mirror. 3. Start drawing at the outside corner of your eye. Draw your ‘wing’ up toward the outer edge of your eyebrow. Repeat on other eye.
4. Dip the cotton swab in the eye makeup remover. Use the swab to make your eyes symmetrical and correct any harsh marks. 5. Once you have completed your ‘wing’, finish applying your eyeliner and connect the lines. This is where you control how thick or thin you want your cat eye to be. HELPING HAND
Go-to person for cancer information Suzanne Froese has been volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society for more than 13 years now. She’s a familiar face in the Abbotsford Unit Office, where she’s an integral part of keeping things running. In particular, Froese is the go-to person for any cancer information and literature people may require after hearing they have cancer or a loved one has been diagnosed. Her friendly manner and caring attitude have proven to be a wonderful support to many people in the community. “Like so many people, cancer has touched my life. Members of my family and some close friends have been diagnosed,” says Froese. “ I do what I can to support those on their cancer journey. As a volunteer, I hear so many personal stories about how cancer has affected people’s lives and I feel it’s a real privilege to listen to their stories and maybe help out in some small way.” Froese doesn’t just donate her

time at the office. Like many Society volunteers, she can be tireless in the contribution of her time. You’ll find her helping out at community fundraising events like Relay For Life and promoting healthy choices and sharing cancer prevention information at events and community fairs.
It makes me proud to know how many people want to show their support and give back.
During Daffodil Month in April, Froese assists with the coordination of campaign. Calling volunteers and distributing door to door kits, she
is making it simple for everyone to join the fight and show their support by buying a pin “As a volunteer, I’m so proud when I start seeing the daffodil pinned on people’s lapels,” says Froese. “I imagine the same thing happening here in Abbotsford is also happening in other towns and cities across Canada. It makes me proud to know how many people want to show their support and give back.” Froese hopes, one day, the world will be cancer free and she’ll have worked herself out of a job. The Abbotsford Community Office is looking for volunteers to assist with office activities, events and awareness campaigns. Peninsula Runners opened its first store 18 years ago in White Rock. One of the big goals of the store was to help make their community a healthier and fitter place by hosting running clinics and local running events. Phil Ellis the managing partner of the store says “the idea was to be a running store for everybody... any level of walker, runner or fitness enthusiast!” Peninsula Runners Langley opened in 2001 and the Abbotsford location opened almost three years ago. Peninsula Runners has recently come on board as a silver sponsor of the Envision Financial Run For Water. “We really like to focus on being a local store,” Phil told me. One of the virtues of this focus is that as a business Peninsula
has become a real stakeholder in the communities where it is rooted. “We put on events for runners; we put on a lot of clinics; we spearheaded efforts in South Surrey to build a public track. We really try to make a special effort to help people find enjoyment through the sport.” As a business that focuses on running, Peninsula Runners has a natural tie-in with Run for Water. But Phil says their sponsorship is about more than a business-related affinity. “I remember when Run for Water first started and I was amazed at how successful it was, even the first couple of years. I thought it was a really positive event. We wanted to become involved and we’ve always promoted the event. Even before we became an official sponsor, we knew it was a good thing for the community.” Run for Water also appeals to
Peninsula Runners in virtue of the movement’s global emphasis. “Most definitely it appeals to us,” Phil said of the goal to raise money for clean water projects in Africa. “Myself, I’m a big water guy; that’s my drink! As a runner you kind of have to drink water, right? So for me, the availability of water is so important. I would have a hard time living in a place where I didn’t have access to fresh water. So I can only imagine the difficulties faced by the people we’re trying to help. Water is the key to life.” Nicely capturing Envision Financial Run for Water’s emphasis on global citizenship, Phil summed up by saying, “I think it is a great cause. Of course we have local issues that we need to address, but the globe is small. You need to have a global consciousness these days. Our problems are shared problems and we need to do what we can to help each other.”

Glazed Pork Tenderloin This recipe puts a modern twist on the traditional ham with pineapple slices and it makes a great dish for entertaining. The pineapple salsa recipe (at leppfarmmarket.com) adds a fresh element to the dish!

Combine spice rub ingredients, rub into tenderloins. Cover loosely and refrigerate for 4 – 24 hours.
THROUGH THE EYES: Bright, clear light yellow.
Mix sauce ingredients. Remove 1/2 cup for basting, reserve remainder. GRILLING: Preheat grill to medium-high. Grill for 5 minutes, turning occasionally to sear and set the spice crust. Reduce heat to medium low and baste with sauce, cooking until internal temperature reaches 140-145 degrees. OVEN ROASTED: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil. Spray a baking rack that fits inside the baking sheet with cooking spray and place on baking sheet. Place tenderloins on rack. Bake for 15 minutes, and baste with sauce. Bake another 10 minutes, baste again. Continue basting until internal temperature is 145 degrees. Let rest for 5-10 minutes to allow juices to reabsorb into meat. Slice and serve with reserved sauce, or with a fresh pineapple or mango salsa (recipe at leppfarmmarket.com).

April is practically art month in the UFV community as year-long projects burst into bloom. From theatre to fashion to graphic design, everything seems to culminate in the busy, beautiful month of April. One of my favourite spring moments — aside from spotting the first snowdrop poking up from the ground — is the opening day of UFV Theatre’s Director’s Festival. Fondly known as Dfest, an audience can fit a dozen shows into just a couple days with a little planning. The shows vary from comedy to tragedy, absurd to hilarious, tear-jerking to gutwrenching to knee-slapping. Most
are only a half-hour long, and at $5 a show they form the perfect bite of theatre to work into any schedule. This year the curtains open on April 23, hosted as always at UFV’s Yale Road campus in Chilliwack. Something else to check out this month is the grad show of UFV’s fashion design students. Personally, I’m never going to make it to Milan — or even New York — to see a fashion show hit the runway. But anyone can taste a little haute couture in the Fraser Valley with a ticket to UFV’s Absolute Fashion runway on April 29. The outfits range from beachwear to winter layers and from practical to fantastical. Speaking of fantastical, my absolute favourite Absolute Fashion contribution of all time was Laura Auffray’s collection in 2012,
which included costuming odes to Star Wars and The Hunger Games. Last but not least, UFV’s first ever graphic design graduates will present their portfolios at Abbotsford’s The Reach Museum and Gallery on April 24. The Mission-based diploma program is still brand new, and this first graduating class has proudly renamed themselves. “Green is new and fresh. It’s where we’re from, and where we’re headed,” their website reads. “We are Green, the first class of graphic designers in the Fraser Valley.” As spring shoots and blooms peek their heads out of the ground, there’s no better way to banish winter than by including a little UFV creativity into your April.
