Our history Quesnel has been the hub of humankind beginning with the meeting of First Nations people at the confluence of the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers. These waterways have played significant roles in the further exploration and development of the North Cariboo including Quesnel.

When Simon Fraser discovered the area in 1808 he was trying to establish a route to the Pacific Ocean and mistakenly believed he had reached the headwaters of the Columbia River. His exploration led to the navigation of the Fraser River, named in his honour. Fraser named the tributary of the Fraser River after his clerk Jules Maurice Quesnel.

In the spring of 1857, gold was discovered on the Fraser River triggering a major gold rush bringing prospectors in droves up the centre of the province. Miners reached the Quesnel River by 1859 and major strikes in the Barkerville area two years later. Human development demands economic development and farmers and ranchers supplied the gold rush with the needs of life. The government supported the population explosion with the building of the Cariboo Waggon Road in 1861 to provide a more economical and safer route to transport supplies. The road reached Barkerville in 1865.

With the addition of telegraph lines, the growth of the communities in the north including Quesnel and the arrival of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway in 1921 kept Quesnel a bustling, busy northern terminus.

Whether for building homesteader dwellings, business facilities or rail and bridge construction, forestry has always played an economic role in the development of Quesnel. By 1952, the landscape around the community was dotted with sawmills, planer mills and logging trucks bringing in the valuable trees for processing in Quesnel.

Quesnel made the leap from a town to a city in 1979 and forestry remains the driving economic engine with agriculture, mining and tourism also playing significant roles in the development of the community.

Barkerville Historic Town One of Canada’s largest and most comprehensive historic towns, Barkerville, provides visitors with a time warp experience as they step into the life and times of the Cariboo’s first European entrepreneurs and experience the 1860s.

The town grew almost overnight when news of Billy Barker’s famous gold strike reached desperate gold seekers throughout the colony of British Columbia and along the depleted gold fields of California. The cafes, stores, professionals and services which followed the miners to provide for their basic needs have been recreated, as well as a wealth of mining antiques and displays.

The park is open for visitors to experience life in the late 19th century year round, however from early May until well into September, exhibits and displays, impersonators of famous people, a period theater and the infamous court of the “Hanging Judge”, Matthew Begbie, are also available to the public.

For those who desire to fully immerse themselves in the Barkerville experience, bed and breakfast establishments allow visitors to sleep in the park overnight, while costume rentals and interactive activities turn the imagination to Barkerville’s busiest years.

Only an hour from Quesnel, along Highway 26, Barkerville is a worthwhile stop for tourists and amateur historians.

Footsteps from the past The Old Fraser River Bridge, now reserved for pedestrians, is accessed from Heritage Corner, an historic civic site which contains many local artifacts. The bridge was first constructed to allow cattle drives from west of Quesnel to be sold at the local stockyards then transported by rail to the south.

Located on Carson and Front Streets, the site also houses the remains of the steamer Enterprise, the first riverboat to reach Quesnel, a Cornish water wheel, and a cairn commemorating the Overland Telegraph Line which reached Quesnel in 1865. Each of these artifacts highlights a way in which Quesnel was linked to the world.

Nearby is the Hudson’s Bay Store, which sold supplies to the area’s first miners and homesteaders. The log building, erected in 1867, has been restored and continues to serve as a civic landmark. Cariboo Keepsakes, a showcase and retail outlet for local artisans, carries on an honoured tradition.

Pioneer Cemetary Many of Quesnel’s original settlers are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery overlooking LeBourdais Park. A stroll through this historic graveyard allows the visitor to imagine the stories of these peoples’ lives in Quesnel’s early history. The City of Quesnel and dedicated volunteers have refurbished the cemetery and restored lost headstones as well as researched the origins of many of the people buried there. Many of the families who still reside in Quesnel can trace their ancestors to those who lie for eternity in the Quesnel Pioneer Cemetery.

Chinese burial plots run north/south according to Feng-Shui tradition, while European burial plots run east/west. The cemetery contains a Chinese Memorial Cairn, commemorating Chinese pioneers who died in the region. The design of the cairn represents the miles of hand-piled ditch lines built by the Chinese miners in the mid 1800s.

T he Quesnel and District Museum and Archives is the perfect place to start discovering Quesnel. With thousands of artifacts, fascinating information, and unique displays, visitors will learn about life in the North Cariboo from its earliest settlers to modern day.

Antique Machinery Park The Quesnel and District Heritage Association opened the Antique Machinery Park on Dragon Lake Road.

With considerable contributions from the community the museum now offers a window into the agricultural world of days gone by.

Operated by volunteers, the Antique Machinery Park is situated on seven acres of land, 10 kilometres south of Quesnel.

Among the many displays both inside the buildings and on the grounds are collections of farming, logging, sawmilling, and mining machinery.

Collections of small antique items are seen within the main building, including a complete display of early B.C. licence plates.

Experts at the Antique Machinery Park have restored several machines now on display in working order in Barkerville including the sawmill which now cuts lumber for various restoration projects in the historic town.

Historic Cottonwood House Cottonwood House, one of the many stopping houses which provided provisions and rest to pioneers travelling the Cariboo Waggon Road, continues to offer a chance to stretch and re-fuel on the way to Barkerville. The roadhouse and ranch were built in 1864.

Located approximately 40 km east of Quesnel the boarding house, pioneer settlement and farm have been restored to its 1864 condition. Interpreters in period costumes give tours of the grounds, which includes an exhibit highlighting the history of the area. The main house, barns, sheds, animals, wagon rides and cabins as well as picnic grounds, continue to make Cottonwood house an excellent stop for photographic opportunities. With a gift store, country kitchen, candy store and cabins available for rental, Cottonwood House still offers a respite for travellers.

Cottonwood House is operated by the Quesnel School District and provides an opportunity for students to learn about tourism, business management, agriculture and history.

Visit the Hoodoos Pinnacles Provincial Park encompasses 128ha of pine forest overlooking Baker Creek. From the Pinnacles viewpoint, see a unique formation of hoodoos – ancient, pillar-like sandstone formations – as well as a top-of-the-world view of the city of Quesnel.

An easy 1km/0.6mile hike along a well-maintained trail leads to the viewpoint. Plan on a 15-minute walk to reach it. The park is open year round for day use and sightseeing. Pinnacles Provincial Park is a 15-minute drive west from Quesnel, and can be accessed via Pinnacles Road, off Highway 97.

West Fraser Timber Park Baseball diamonds allow the public to take in a local game or, when not in use, are available for a game or just the chance to throw the ball around.

Lawn bowling facilities are located in the park. Set on five acres which includes a clubhouse, contact the Visitors Centre for information on how to access this activity. Two tennis courts are also available on a first come first serve basis. There are tennis courts in Kersley, 18 km south of Quensel. Cowboy Culture Horses have been a vital part of the North Cariboo since the first settlers arrived with the Gold Rush of the 1850s.

These animals continue to play a key role for many local residents and ranchers. Non-stop rodeo action Alex Fraser Park comes alive the third weekend in July, as the sights, sounds and smells of the Quesnel Rodeo awaken the senses.

The event is part of the festivities of Billy Barker Days, celebrating the history of the Cariboo. Cowboys compete for pride, glory and cash prizes during the three-day, amateur event, which draws competitors from across the province.

Bull-riding, steer-wrestling, and wild horse competitions thrill audiences as the difficulty of these events is often painfully obvious on the faces of competitors.

Active in the cariboo Whatever the season, the North Cariboo offers a host of great recreation activities to suit every level of abilities and style.

In the Quesnel’s downtown, visitors enjoy the leisurely stroll around town to spot one of the 23 colourful, historic fire hydrants, drop into one of the town’s many green spaces, or take a walk on our Riverfront Trail, a 9.2 km easy wander that links north Quesnel to the west side of the town along the mighty Fraser River. The trial includes 5 km through parks and cityscape on the north and 4.3 km of peaceful residential neighbourhoods with landscaped walkways and friendly passersby.

Every Saturday morning from May to October, Quesnel’s Farmers’ Market brings thousands of patrons to the lawn of the Helen Dixon Centre in the heart of the community. The market slogan is aptly stated, come for the freshness, stay for the fun.

Since people first trod the paths of the North Cariboo, gold seeking has dominated their interest. The search for gold continues to draw in miners and would-be miners who hope to find the motherlode. Hunting for gold is an exciting pastime.

A smooth glide over a still waterway attracts canoeists and kayakers from across the country. The view from the watercraft is an ideal opportunity to capture wildlife with your camera. Don’t miss the chance to take home stellar shots.

All in all, Quesnel and the surrounding landscape is a recreationer’s paradise.

Enjoy our Green Spaces LeBourdais Park, located in North Quesnel, is home to a variety of local events but also caters to the casual game of frisbee. The park is also home to a fabulous set of swings, jungle gym, and spray park. Cool off under one of the many fire hydrants, buckets and water-shooting rocks. Little ones can sit in one of the shallow pools of water, while big kids can take in the huge water guns.

Ceal Tingley Park, at the confluence of the Fraser and Quesnel Rivers, is the primary gathering spot for walking the Riverfront Trail. The park also houses carefully preserved relics of Quesnel’s past and its grassy areas are perfect for a picnic or casual recreation.

West Fraser Timber Park offers a variety of sporting activities as well as a comprehensive children’s play area, the Nature Education Resource Centre, a pond and plenty of green space.

Alex Fraser Park, with its many agricultural buildings and facilities, hosts many events. The park is also home to several regular equine activities and offers green space for family enjoyment.

Quesnel is proud of its many lakes, creeks and rivers which offer active or passive enjoyment of the many amenities.

Wells/Barkerville is home to glacier-fed lakes, stunning mountains and extensive trails and roadways to enjoy the breath-taking scenery.

In Search of Treasure Gold panners and rock hounders still scour the hills and river valleys in the North Cariboo for the gold buried there. Since the magnificent finds of the 1850s, the excitement has not diminished and the findings are still inspiring the search for wealth.

Placer mining operations along the Quesnel River have, up to 1945, recorded a production of 477 kilograms of gold.

Much of this production has come from dredging operations but a significant amount of gold has been won from tertiary benches which occur up to several tens of metres above the present river level.

Although the Quesnel River passes largely through volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Nicola Group. It is considered that most of the placer gold has been derived from the Omineca terrain to the east rather than from the Nicola group.

The Quesnel River placer deposit, mainly on a low bench adjacent to the river, is typical of placer mining operations along the Quesnel River.

In addition to the gold, the Barkerville Highway has provided a source of jade, while Tibbles Lake is frequently searched for agates. Serpentine has also been found near Blackwater Road and the illusive thunder egg hunt remains popular in Nazko’s prehistoric volcano site.

Water Travel at its Best Canoeing the beautiful Bowron Lakes Chain, a 116 kilometre rectangular circuit of lakes and portages, has become one of the premier attractions in the Cariboo.

The chain begins in scenic Bowron Lake Provincial Park, 32 kilometres east of Wells, on the Barkerville Highway.

Taking seven to ten days to complete, depending on strength and experience, the route is recognized as one of the best canoe circuits in the world and attracts visitors from across the globe. The park’s spectacular scenery and wildlife viewing are also available to those visitors who choose to limit their stay to the park’s opening land base. Reservations are required to canoe the Bowron Lakes Chain, so check with the Visitors’ Centre for more details.
