Music that sounds to be a cross between Appalachian fiddle music and contemporary two-step pumps from the speakers at Colwood Community Hall.

Pairs of women in hoop skirts and men in slick, embroidered shirts work with three other couples – their inward-facing start formation puts the ‘square’ in square dancing. The groups listen closely and move to instructions called out by an equally festively dressed man with a microphone high on the stage.

The age group is mostly 50-over, although a few younger couples are here, twirling each other along with the rest.

“It’s been tough to generate new members over the years,” admits Saanich resident Sandra Rowan, president of the Victoria Country Cousins square dance club based in Royal Oak. She is encouraged lately, however, having spotted an ad a while back about a workshop for recruitment and retention for dance clubs. Gaining new insight into how to bring in newcomers and keep them interested has helped boost the numbers of late.

“We’re starting to see younger people coming in,” says Rowan’s husband, Gordon, who notes he and Sandra started dancing at age 50.

Another way clubs work to keep this social and healthpromoting activity alive is to take groups to other clubs’ home halls, Sandra says.

When one club visits another with at least two full squares – eight couples – it enables them to “steal the banner” of the other and

Saanich shifts 38% from garbage In the first two weeks of Saanich’s new garbage collection program, approximately 181 tons of kitchen and yard waste was diverted from the landfill.

That equates to a 38 per cent diversion rate, which is right

on target with where Saanich public works hoped it would be when the program started the first week of April.

Dave McAra, manager of solid waste services, said the 181 tons was roughly 31 per cent kitchen scraps, while yard

waste made up the remaining 69 per cent.

He anticipates the diversion rate could rise, as Saanich residents become more accustomed to what organics can be recycled. editor@saanichnews.com

“The idea is to promote the mindful use of your handheld device,” said Mena Westhaver, one of five delegates from Leadership Victoria who created the project. “We know it’s out there so why not, instead of kiboshing technology … say ‘OK lets use it in a fun way, look up and take a photo of what you’re seeing.”

Look Up BC encourages people of all ages to reconnect with the local community, surroundings and the environment. The first Look Up BC Campaign (#LookUpBC) launched Feb. 15 and the photo contest runs to April 30 with a windup party May 9 at Uptown’s main plaza.

The concept is to reconnect people and their community, the Saanich woman said.

“It’s to really bring back that engagement of talking and looking people eye to eye,” she said.

Hockey loyalty is up for grabs

It’s playoff time in the NHL and hockey fans in two of Canada’s three largest cities are on the outside looking in.

Both the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs could not squeeze into the postseason. For the Leafs, a colossal collapse in March spelled their demise. For the Canucks, a good first couple of months disintegrated into a season of poor play.

Both have quickly turned to big names in the game to help turn around their fortunes.

The Canucks have brought iconic former captain Trevor Linden back into the fold after he spent six years in the hockey wilderness.

The Leafs have secured Brendan Shanahan from the league office, a hall-of-famer.

The big question now is whether these two greats on the ice, with grey hair sprinkling their former mullets, can turn around the fortunes of these franchises.

Linden’s task looks larger than that of Shanahan’s. The game has passed the Canucks. It’s all about speed and size now, and the Canucks’ core players, specifically the Sedin brothers, have never been known for fleetness of foot. They are smart, skilled and tougher than they are given credit for – they are not, however, fast.

One could argue neither of these big announcements from the Canucks or Leafs amount to a hill of beans. Even someone with a smidgeon of hockey sense could tell you the Leafs need reliable defencemen. Shanny going to play D? Does Linden have a time machine to get the speedy Pavel Bure back on the ice?

These announcements are window dressing, at best.

So, for whom do we cheer? The last remaining Canadian-based team, Les Habitants? No thanks. We will scour the rosters, find the team with the highest percentage of B.C. and Canadian-born players, and go that route.

We are moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work. We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations.

Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipeline companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-of-theart and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

Admirals Road, from the Island Highway in View Royal to Gorge Road in Saanich, will be re-opened to vehicular traffic in early to mid-May. Prior to the opening of Admirals Road and the bridge, the two communities are hosting a modest ceremony this Saturday, April 26th, at 10 a.m., with representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

The community is invited to join the ceremony. It will take place on the

sidewalk on the east side of the new bridge. Parking is available along Gorge Road, west of Admirals Road, as well as in the perimeter areas of the Canadian Tire parking lot, located at the corner of Island Highway and Admirals Road.

Replacement of the 80-year-old bridge was necessary due to safety concerns for bridge users, including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge project includes construction of new sidewalks, bike lanes, safety features, improved lighting and new road surface on Admirals Road from Island Highway to Gorge Road, plus installation of storm water

HISTORY

CRAIGFLOWER BRIDGE: SERVING THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1855 While the previous Craigflower Bridge had been dutifully serving local residents for 80 years, it wasn’t the first bridge that spanned that section of the picturesque Gorge Waterway.

In fact, the first Craigflower Bridge opened in 1855, connecting the historic Craigflower Manor to the south and the Craigflower Schoolhouse to the north.

Replacement wooden bridges were constructed as time went on and two instances were reported over the following years of vehicles falling through as the bridges deteriorated. The last instance occurred in 1932 and the bridge at that time was demolished.

Passengers were ferried across the

Waterway until the next timber bridge opened in 1933, featuring overhead street lights that came on automatically at sunset. The provincial government had jurisdiction over the bridge and was responsible for maintenance and repair until May 1998, when ownership was transferred jointly to the municipalities of Saanich and View Royal.

The bridge remained substantially unchanged until recent years, when it was deemed no longer safe for excessive vehicle loads. It also had very narrow sidewalks on each side, no provision for bicycles, and the railings and deck were in very poor condition.

CRAIGFLOWER BRIDGE FAST FACTS ▶ The Craigflower Bridge is approximately 120 metres long and connects the municipalities of Saanich and View Royal. It carries about 15,000 vehicles per day, including almost 1,500 trucks.

Wallpaper is a top trend they’ll hit on during presentations at the show.

“Some of the paper they’re making now, it’s so beautiful, easy to apply and easy to remove and they’re gorgeous. I don’t see it ever going back out of style again. It’s come way too far. It’s not your grandmother’s wallpaper,” Drury says.

Hues come in the deepest plums and teals to gold banana leaf, with thick sound proofing material and murals that make you think you’re in Marrakech, or on Madison Avenue in New York.

The hottest colour this year is radiant orchid (a fuchsia).

“We’ll be giving people tips and ideas for incorporating that colour without going out and buying a radiant orchid couch. My take is choose trends that work for you, not just choosing it because it’s a trend.”

These design professionals will outline ways to select accessories that can be easily remedied if need be.

“Try it out and seeing how it works for you,” McGeachy says. “A lot of people have to think resale as well. Things that are your decor, that’s fine if it appeals to the masses.”

Poor layout and design waste money so they’ll help audiences look at where to go high-end and where to save a nickel.

“If the design is done well, it can sell your home for you. If the update is poor, people might walk in and see the dollar signs,” McGeachy says. “You really need to plan well ahead, know well ahead.”

Many would think faux fur should be limited to toss cushions, but a chair, or perhaps even a larger piece (which could show up at the Expo) make a statement, and it’s a good one in 2014. After all, as Drury says, “faux fur is huge.”

Imports provide most sizzle in New York There was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show.

Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano.

The mid-size model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-generation. The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerang-shaped tail lights ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals.

Before moving on, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept should be mentioned as it offers a clue to what the new Maxima might resemble. Any new Toyota Camry is an instant hit, especially in North America where it’s been the best selling car

It incorporates design touches now appearing in sibling models, including a deeper grille that more resembles an upmarket Lexus. Hyundai would like to put a serious dent in the Toyota Camry success story with its own mid-size sedan – the redesigned Sonata.

It’s likely the introduction of a sharp looking Sonata in 2011 helped prompt Toyota into taking a serious look at upping the ante in the Camry. Other competitors have also risen to the challenge. Now the seventh-generation, newly styled, sharper looking 2015 Sonata raises the bar again with improved ride and handling plus advanced driver assistance and safety

equipment.

Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear is vital to your safety. Just ask someone who has had a spill.

Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concussion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed at her condition.

It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life.

She was wearing leathers, gloves, protective boots, and a helmet.

Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point.

Those who have experienced an accident weren’t thinking, “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops.”

When I ride, I’m in full garb.

Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately.

I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it.

Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road. That’s a helmet.

If you’re not going to invest any money in anything else, protect your noggin. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet.

Make sure it fits properly.

Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly.

I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you.

You only have one head.

Use it and protect it.

Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile. There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent. Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case.

Some jackets come with armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t.

I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in.

Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted.

I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection.

Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots. That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather footwear that at least covers your anklebone.

What’s great about the industry now is the availability of cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protected. Bonus.

Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists.

Some gloves also have reinforced points with carbon fibre to prevent further damage. Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove. Too much room can cause blisters. Too little

room cuts off circulation.

Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This material is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So you can take them off or put them on when needed.

Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt. Wearing elbow and knee pads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles.

Along with their helmet.

Accessories: If you want added peace of mind, that’s available, too. I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care. A full chest protector is also available.

These are the basics to getting started. Bottom line, you won’t regret being fully suited on the road. alexandra.straub @drivewaybc.ca

I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii.

They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world.

While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought.

Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right?

One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected.

With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks.

My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition!

Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.”

Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition.

Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle.

I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school.

As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition.

Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold!

Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more.

Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that.

All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

In the latest Saanich instalment of the Vancouver Island Pro Wrestling storyline, Lak Siddartha will fight tooth and nail to retain his title at Velox Rugby Club this week The pro wrestler earned the VIPW championship belt last fall, defeating B.J. Laredo at the same venue. He’s fended off a few different attempts to topple him since, including a gimmick match against Laredo in Duncan. “I still retained the title even though I was left in a bloody mess,” he says.

A Feb. 14 event against No. 1 contender Creator Von Slasher saw him retain the title when both wrestlers were down and the match was thrown out with no winner.

Siddartha faces Scott Steele tonight.

“He’s a high-flier. He’s got the speed advantage that’s for sure,” Siddartha said. “But I’ve got power and size.”

About 12 to 15 wrestlers are expected to hit the ring for a hard-core battle royale where all competitors, with the exception of the two main fighters, will fight to be the last man standing, and become No. 1 contender. Other matches will feature Krofton, Eddie Osbourne, Riea Von Slasher, Cremator, Laredo and more.

He stands out for me because he encouraged me to write creatively and to write poetry. He treated me like an adult, as if I had something to say that could affect others. He really shaped me that way. He was very candid and would share his own experience and joke about what was going on at home, so he was real to me. Teachers in my era were authoritative, but he was so different. Having the freedom to write what you want and how you want, and to share that without being judged, was really outside of the box.

I remember him saying, ‘One year I’m going to take a class of students to Mount Everest’ and I remember it reverberated through the school. People had to think about ‘what is Everest?’

It’s the highest peak of human achievement. And they went. I remember he came back and said ‘I’m going to build a climbing wall,’ and he was one of the people responsible for the development of Boulders Climbing Gym, which continues to have a huge impact on our community and on our kids in Central Saanich. It’s always had a very, very significant impact on me.

Just two races in, Bill Okell of Saanich is off to a good start in his bid to qualify for the Sports Car Club of America’s national championships.

Driving a modified MG Midget in the F production class, Okell posted fifth- and sixthplace finishes in the

events held at Thunderhill Raceway Park road course near Sacramento, Calif. The results left him sitting fifth in the point standings for the SCCA’s Western Conference, heading into this weekend’s races in Los Angeles.

out we just got faster and better,” said Okell, who was invited to drive a car owned by fellow racer Chuck Horton. Both are under the umbrella of the San Francisco-based Huffaker Engineering team.

The conference schedule lists six race weekends with two races each. Drivers need a minimum of four race starts to be eligible for nationals – known as the run-offs – and the top 10 in the standings qualify. The run-offs happen Oct. 7 to 12 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.

Okell hopes to get his third and fourth races in this weekend, but will be in tough competitively, as the L.A. races tend to attract the largest number of drivers in his category. Regardless of his results, he plans to run at Seattle International Raceway next month and possibly Portland in July.

With the run-offs being held on the West Coast for the first time in 45 years, many drivers from California, Oregon and Washington, and a few from B.C., have put together ambitious race schedules for 2014, Okell said. ddescoteau @vicnews.com

On a bright April afternoon, Shel Suzuki and Brooklyn the bulldog soak in the sun on the deck of their Fisherman’s Wharf float home.

A harbour taxi packed with passengers cruises by and just up the dock, tourists hold up iPads and cameras to take a piece of this scene home.

Inside Suzuki’s kitchen, a two-man work crew is in the final stages of installing the kitchen cabinets back around the hot water heater – that unexpectedly gave out earlier in the day – because today they learned that the cabinets were actually built around the tank. Just another example of how float home life, particularly life in Suzuki’s ultra compact, 347 square-foot floating “hobbit house” is just like life on land, with a twist.

“It’s like any other home,” Suzuki says. “It’s just maintenance. But you can’t find people who’ve worked on float homes before, so this is their first time working on a really small space.”

Suzuki was drawn to the close community following a 2010 visit to Victoria, when along with friends, they spotted the float home, which happened to be for sale, and posed for a photo in front of it. Suzuki was living in Winnipeg at the time and was taken by the copper-roofed float home, dubbed Ziggaratus by previous owners.

“Within two months I bought the place and moved out here – without seeing the inside at all. It was just a gut feeling. I saw the front and thought: ‘I think I could live here.’”

Suzuki’s story is a common one

One Edmonton import made a deal to purchase his home from the parking lot when he learned it was up for sale during a visit to Victoria. Before Suzuki would experience the warmweather joys that generally attract new residents to the lifestyle: kayaking off the deck and riding the water taxi downtown with Brooklyn – they had to experience a winter on the water without adequate weatherproofing.

“Because I came in January and didn’t know what the weather was like, I didn’t have a fireplace. I had single pane windows that weren’t great. I had doors that didn’t fit. It was a very cold winter – so cold I had to sleep with a pillow case on my head.”

The following month came a tsunami warning from the earthquake in Japan. The float homes were evacuated within five minutes in the middle of the night. Last Febru-

ary, a homeowner to the community couldn’t sleep through the sound of their wind chimes, and when he got out of bed to silence the noise, he spotted his neighbour’s home floating towards the Inner Harbour, secured by just one rope.

Eventually, the residents woke up, heeded the advice to stay inside, and with the help of several neighbours, secured the home once more.

Suzuki simply laughs at the few close calls they’ve been through and reiterates the need to check and tighten lines regularly. Maintenance costs, such as regular upkeep of the float on which the home is built, are in line with those of living on land.

The cost of moorage, paid by squarefootage, of the base is comparable to strata fees for condo owners.

Guy Crozier, president elect of the Victoria Real Estate Board sold float homes at Westbay Marine Village in Esquimalt when the community launched in the early 2000s.

The homes have always had a romantic appeal, the Sleepless in Seattle effect, Crozier says.

“A lot of float homes, you can park your car in a covered parking lot, walk down the dock to your float home and jump on your paddle board or in your canoe and go out right from your back door. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to have.”

Since Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t gated like Westbay, residents are in constant contact with tourists drawn to the lifestyle.

“Sometimes in the summer, we’ll leave chalk out here and people will write where they’re from. You’ll come home and see a hundred different places in the world,” Suzuki says. “Advice I give people, that if you want to live down here and it’s your gut to live down here, then you should do it.” arts@mondaymag.com

A trio of massive rocks on Rogers Avenue resurfaced for spring as volunteers ripped, sawed and stripped away the invasive plants that grew around them at Bruce Hutchison Park.

“At the beginning of the day you couldn’t see any of the rocks behind us. It was covered in complete bushes,” said Keegen Payne, one of five international Pearson College students who volunteered for the intense clean-up.

The five students from the Metchosin international school hail from the Northwest Territories, Botswana, Venezuela, Senegal and Vanuatu. They were completing their mandated “project week” in partnership with the North Quadra Residents’ Association and Saanich parks department to help restore the Quadra-area park’s Garry oak ecosystem.

“We’ve organized a week of volunteering every day … that’s our service project for the year,” Payne said.

Bruce Hutchison Park, between Rogers and Lily avenues, is a small remnant Garry Oak area overgrown with invasive species such as English ivy, Daphne laureolas and Scotch broom.
