QDTA speaks out on districts decision to cancel recess

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Calling the decision to cancel recess “convenient for administration” teachers are calling out districts in their move to squash the break.

“Teachers do not support, or agree with the cancellation of, or moving recess to the beginning of the day,” Quesnel District Teachers’ Association President Lisa Kishkan said.

“Our district was able to provide supervision at recess for several months in 2012, so we know it can be done.

“We have 10 weeks left in the school year, which is a far shorter period of time. We recognize that teachers will continue to ensure children have their snacks and movement breaks as they need them, so essentially this decision means 15 minutes of instructional time will be lost each day.

“It’s not only unnecessary, but also disappointing, to say the least.”

A release by SD28 stated: “Due to the

increased pressure on our administrative staff to perform supervision and the need to focus on student safety, School District #28 will be cancelling recess at all elementary schools effective April 23.”

BCTF president Jim Iker announced 72-hour notice last Thursday after union members voted 89 per cent in favour of enduring a three-stage strike plan.

Phase one includes the withdrawal of supervision outside class time, and no communication with administration and principals.

Iker said communication at the bargaining table will determine how long phase one will last.

Phase two is rotating one-day walkouts within districts throughout the province. Phase three is a full-scale strike, which requires a second vote by union members.

“None of us want phase three,” Kishkan said.

“These actions are very stressful for teachers. We value communication and problem solving with our principals. We often put in

Education Minister Peter Fassbender released a statement earlier this week calling the decision to issue notice “a little disappointing but not at all surprising.”

“I’m informed that the employers’ association will respond to the BCTF’s strike in an appropriate and principled manner to put commensurate pressure on the union,” the release states.

“I believe that this is a responsible approach.

This time around, with the BCTF also feeling pressure to reach an agreement, we hope both sides will be equally motivated to find solutions at the table, rather than letting the BCTF’s strike drift on indefinitely.”

Thieves nab more than $35,000 in items

April 21, Quesnel RCMP received a report of a break and enter to a residence located in the 1600 block of West Fraser Road.

The suspect(s) entered the residence and stole more than

$35,000 worth of property including five long barrelled firearms, a green 2007 Arctic side by side, a blue 2002 Yamaha Viper snowmobile, a red 2008 Skidoo snowmobile as well as electronic equipment.

The RCMP’s Forensic Identification Section was called out to examine the scene.

Two First Nations males with flashlights were observed on the property in the early morning hours following the break

and enter.

One of the male suspects is described as approximately 5’8 inches tall with a heavier build wearing a striped shirt and baseball cap.

They fled the area in a grey Chevrolet

Oakes announces funding

Two key arts and culture organizations serving the communities of Quesnel and Wells have been awarded $28, 030 in BC Arts Council grants, Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes announced Thursday.

“Thanks to this funding from our government, the arts and culture scene in Quesnel and Wells will continue to thrive and prosper,” Oakes said.

“Communities in the Cariboo are stronger, healthier and more vibrant when

there are a wide variety of theatre, musical and art amenities available close to our home.”

The Island Mountain Arts Society received $20,000 to fund the 2014 ArtsWells Festival of All Things Art from August 1 - 4, 2014 and the Quesnel and District Community Arts Council will receive $8,030 towards their operating activities for the current fiscal year.

As B.C.’s lead agency for arts funding and development, the B.C. Arts Council

enlists the expertise of British Columbia’s artists to evaluate grant applications through a peer review process independent of government.

Established in 1995, the B.C. Arts Council consults with the arts and culture community to develop policies, programs and strategic priorities for the sector.

Last year, the council approved more than 1,000 grants in over 200 communities in every region of the province.

Say no to bitumen in tankers

T

his is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime.

The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the B.C. coast.

Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen.

A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years.

My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed.

The solution that is best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits: There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases.

We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria.

In other words the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands. This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit double the CO2 of our new

design. This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the B.C. Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery.

An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of very dirty coke (much fouler than B.C. coal) which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power.

The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada.

Construction of the refinery will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years. Operations at the refinery will result in more permanent jobs than any project has ever created in B.C. with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province.

The Canadian and Provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations, will share in billions of new tax dollars each year.

Unfortunately, our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining.

One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that.

We have a solid business plan and as a consequence Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend us most of the funds required to build the

greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We are currently moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work.

We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations.

Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely.

Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore, some of the best pipelining companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition, we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered

by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-of-the-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C.. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak.

I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

Farmers seek changes to ALC legislation

Newly appointed Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick is meeting with B.C. Agriculture Council representatives this week to discuss their growing concerns about a plan to set new rules for protected farmland in the B.C. Interior.

When changes to the Agricultural Land Commission were announced in late March, the move was generally endorsed

by Rhonda Driediger, then chair of the BCAC. Dreidiger, a berry grower in the Fraser Valley, said opening up the Interior, Kootenay and North regions to secondary uses based on social and economic needs would help farms innovate and stay in business.

Dreidinger has been succeeded as BCAC chair by Stan Vander Waal, who operates flower greenhouses in Chilliwack. After meeting last week with Letnick, Vander Waal wants changes to the legislation.

7:00 pm, May 1, 2014 at Quesnel and district Senior’s centre The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is proposing amendments to the text of the Cariboo Regional District Quesnel Fringe Area Zoning Bylaw No. 3504, 1999 and Cariboo Regional District North Cariboo Area Rural Land Use Bylaw No. 3505, 1999 as follows: Bylaw No. 4858 and 4859 The amendments propose to allow Medical Marihuana operations as a use in areas zoned Industrial.

Bylaw No. 4900 and 4901 The amendments propose a change in the definition of “Agricultural Operation” to exclude Medical Marihuana as an agricultural use.

Public hearings are for all persons who believe their interest in property is affected by the proposed bylaws.

The public hearings are to be held by a delegate of the Cariboo Regional District Board. A copy of the CRD resolution is available for public inspection.

Written submissions regarding the proposed bylaw will also be received. Prepare for Health Care Costs During Retirement

As you save and invest for retirement, what are your ultimate goals? Do you plan on traveling the world? Purchasing a vacation home? Pursuing your hobbies? People often think and plan for these costs. Yet, too often, many of us overlook what potentially could be a major expense during our retirement years: health care. By preparing for these costs, you can help yourself enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

Many of us may ignore the impact of health care costs because we just assume provincial healthcare will pay for everything. But that’s not the case. Furthermore, provincial healthcare does not include the costs of long-term care, which vary by individual and can be considerable. So what can you do to help cope with these costs?

Here are a few suggestions: Estimate your costs Try to estimate what your out-of-pocket health care costs might be, based on your health, your age at retirement, whatever supplemental insurance you may carry and other factors.

Know the key dates Things can change in your life, but try to identify, as closely as possible, the age at which you plan to retire. This will help you spot any coverage gaps.

Invest for growth and rising income Health care costs typically rise as you move further into retirement, so make sure that a reasonable portion of your assets is allocated to investments with the potential for both growth and rising income.

Review your insurance options The purchase of long-term care insurance may offer flexibility and financial resources to stay in your home rather than living in a long-term care facility should you require round the clock medical care. Alternatively, if you live longer than expected you may need to consider the cost of healthcare at a later age and structure your financial strategy to take those considerations into account. Annuities are one income generating vehicle to consider for those who are concerned about living longer and having to pay health care costs out of pocket later in life.

Develop a long-term care strategy To meet long-term care costs, you could selfinsure or purchase insurance coverage. To learn about long-term care insurance solutions, contact your financial advisor.

Think about health care directives. If you were to become incapacitated, you might be unable to make health care decisions — and these decisions may affect not only your quality of life but also your financial situation, and that of your family. Talk to your legal advisor about establishing a health care directive, which allows you to name someone to make choices on your behalf.

Health care costs during your retirement may be unavoidable. But by anticipating these costs, you can put yourself in a position to deal with them — and that’s a healthy place to be.

Top 10 garden trends for 2014

A

re you a ‘hip ‘gardener, or would like to be one? Garden Media Group says these are the top trends that will dominate the gardening world in 2014.

Ground Up .Composting and recycling are always in the news but this year look for products that pre-compost right on the kitchen counter. I will have my eye out for this as my plastic ice bucket from un-named hotel chain keep the smells out but doesn’t do much more than that.

Drink your garden. This means using all those antioxidants from your garden such as blueberries, raspberries, kale, spinach etc. and blending them up into smoothies for your health. Why stop there, grow your own grapes and hops and really get into it. Check out our seminar May 21 for more information on this topic.

Dress up your yard. It’s much more than the plastic lawn chair, it’s all about bringing your personal style out into the garden. Your garden is an extension of your home. A place to relax and socialize so have fun decorating with wall art, colourful pillows, candles, etc.

Bee-neficials. Bees are big this year and it’s all about making them happy by growing pollen-rich flowers and offering wild bees a safe habitat. Flowers with single petals offer more pollen than doubles. They are attracted to the colours blue, purple and yellow.

Some suggestions include: bee balm, rudbeckia, cranesbill, alyssum and echinacea.

Simple Elegance. This is a great one for the novice gardener or for those who have a difficult time deciding on a planting combination. Plant only a single colour in an elegant container and you will be surprised on how many compliments you receive.

Young Men Get Down and Dirty. A surprising statistic is that men 18 – 34 are spending $100 more than the average gardener. They like to barbecue more, make their own beer with homegrown hops and spend time with their kids in the dirt. Good on you guys.

Think Gardens. Schools, hospitals and offices are recognizing the benefits of plants with indoor plants. Plants reduce stress; make us smarter and more productive.

Fingertip Gardens. Gardening is high tech with more mobile apps that will help you be successful in your garden.

Clicking on the QR code of a plant tag will give you planting ideas as well as planting and growing information.

Tree-mendous Reversal. North Americans are being asked to plant trees in an effort to replace more than the four million urban trees that are lost each year. You will be hearing more and more about the benefits of trees.

Back in the saddle again Spring has sprung and though the skies are still grey as often as not and the mornings still chilly, the hardcore and those without the ability to feel cold have jumped on their bikes, whether motorized or not.

This makes for happy cyclists and bikers, but also renews the everperenial struggle to be seen and respected when you have half the wheels and (much less than) half the weight of most of the vehicles on the road.

Whether there’s friction or not, cyclists and motorbikes tend to get over-looked because drivers aren’t looking for the vehicles – especially after months of seeing nothing but four-wheel conveyances. Now this new beast takes once more to the road and though we expect it, sometimes we’re smarter than our brains – because our brains are still looking for two headlights and four wheels. So when that skinny little vehicle comes into our peripheral vision we see it, but don’t see it – it doesn’t register as anything more than the visual noise that litters the side of any road.

Thus the ‘I didn’t see him until I hit him’ pandemic.

That, added to speed differences, and you’ve got a deadly recipe. Thus the saying for those on two wheels: ride like everyone on the road is trying to kill you.

So here’s a saying that we in our cars should take up: drive like you’re swinging a sword in a crowded room, i.e. carefully.

And like any good swordsman swinging his sword in a crowded room (perhaps I stretch the metaphor too far?) it requires continuous practice.

I propose a game of ‘Eye Spy”: see how many motorbikes and cyclists you see on your commute – one point for motorcyclists and two for cyclists.

Whoever has the most points by the end of the summer wins. What do you win? A great chance of not running into someone.

We make our own luck

ast weekend my mother-in-law said something that made me realize how many years I’ve been writing this column. Five.

Five is my lucky number.

When I was pregnant with my firstborn, my husband and I included a tiny white sleeper with the number five on it as part of his parents’ Christmas present. They opened it and immediately knew what it suggested: they would be having a fifth grandchild.

Throughout my pregnancy, the number five, or multiples of it, kept showing up, and when Sam was born at 5:55 pm on the 25th day of August in the year 2000 measuring 55 cms, he was placed in a hospital baby bed with the number five on it.

I had never felt superstitious before, but this number seemed extra special to me after his birth. I decided this was my lucky number, probably in a similar way that people choose a symbol that is considered lucky to them.

“It’s also the year of the horse,” Sam later reminded me, referring to the Chinese

Double the luck, I thought to myself. But I’ve felt good fortune for a long time.

Not only have I always had a roof over my head, shoes on my feet and food in my fridge, but I’ve had the love and support of family and friends, too. I also now understand that the luckier I feel, the more luck I have.

But what is luck anyway?

Isn’t it just a feeling of gratitude for what we already have?

“No,” my friend disagreed. “It’s about winning stuff. And I never win anything. Ever.”

“I feel like I’ve won the life lottery,” my other friend chirped cheerfully. The first pal grimaced at that remark.

Both of these fine human beings appear equally blessed in many ways, but one of them admittedly pays a lot more attention to what’s going wrong in life rather than what’s right and good. The cheerful chirper does the complete opposite.

I try to be more like her.

The basic premise of this column when I first started writing it years ago was to share whatever was on my mind that particular week, and to write it from a positive perspective. That’s still my goal.

While keeping upbeat wasn’t easy during my more difficult days, it’s been a good exercise in teaching myself to be more of an optimist and less of a pessimist - something I’ll always have to work on to some degree.

But I believe it’s well worth the effort. Not just because of the mounting research that an appreciation for life helps to protect us against the negative effects of stress – decreasing illness and allowing us to live longer – but also because our quality of life is clearly more enjoyable when we have a

positive outlook.

“It’s all about attitude,” my second friend said.

“A healthy, beautiful millionaire living in a mansion can be a hateful crank, while a less fortunate person struggling to make ends meet could feel happy to be alive.”

When my first friend said he’d rather be the miserable millionaire I had to point out the obvious: all three of us are rich compared to the billions of people in the world living in abject poverty. Instead of comparing our lives to those who appear better off than us, why not do the reverse?

Gratitude feels infinitely better than bitterness and resentment. It also attracts good luck.

Like the luck of understanding that no matter who we are or what we have, we’re all capable of feeling joy, love and happiness if we’re open to it.

That gift is an abundance of wealth all on its own.

Andrew Martin is happy with his posting at NCCS ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

A

ndrew Martin and his family are very happy in Quesnel.

Originally from South Africa, Martin has worked in the field of education for 20 years. In 2010 he left his position in an international school in the middle east to come to Canada.

Finding a job was his first priority and he found one, managing an apartment building in Whalley in Surrey.

“With God’s help that formerly run down building became one of the most successful in the area, with longterm tenants,” he said.

“But with God’s guidance I realized it was time for me to move on.”

The North Cariboo Christian School was looking for someone to fill in for their current principal who was on maternity leave – Martin applied.

“We’ve been all over the world since 2000 but of all the places we’ve been I’ve never experienced such friendliness as in Quesnel,” he said with a smile.

“People wave and greet you.”

Although Martin has been a Christian for a long time, he’s never had the privilege of teaching at a Christian school.

“Teaching is what I’m meant to do and it’s so refreshing to teach in this environment,” he said.

“We integrate a Godly view into our teaching and we see such a difference in students and families. I’ve heard so many heartwarming stories. I’ve seen challenging students flourish, teachers have the privilege of one-on-one with special needs students.”

For Martin, he says its so much more than just teaching, it’s God’s work.

“It’s not a job, it’s a calling for the staff. They believe in their hearts they’re doing God’s work.”

He added in all his previous teaching jobs, he’s never seen God at work, especially with regards to the prayer work.

“I’m so glad I’m in a country and community to see God’s face and talk openly and teach these values,” he said.

Even though Martin is just filling in for the principal, he’s excited to see where God will lead him next.

“We’ll see if we can stay or move on. We love the Cariboo; we love the community, the students, teachers – the school is like a family.”

For Martin, he admits he’s had other well-paid jobs and a lifestyle to match, but he’s never been happier.

“It’s the real world.”

North Cariboo Christian School is celebrating its 20th anniversary of operation. The school is accepting applications for all grades, kindergarten to Grade 9, for the 2014-2015 school year and welcome all interested families to come in for a tour of the facilities and learn about the accredited interdenominational Christian, Ministry of Education-approved curriculum.

When the worst happens to deal with traumatic events. To support efforts, grants have been received from Quesnel Rotary and Community Futures for the purchase of a mobile Emergency Response Trailer. As well, the Cariboo Regional District Electoral Area B has provided financing towards the upcoming training weekend. All other expenses are covered by local fundraising.

The next training event will be held May 30 – 31 and June 1 at the Bouchie Lake Recreation grounds in Quesnel.

On Friday the 30, at 6 p.m., there will be a social and registration at the Bouchie Lake Hall. Overnight camping is available or you can sleep in the hall. Provide your own bedding please.

The cost is only $50 for new participants and $30 for returnees.

Sessions include: • FARSHA – Farm and Ranch Safe Handling of Animals – explanation of roles, safety tips about working with large animals and trailering; • DOT – Commercial Vehicle Transport – trailer safety, laws and backing up lessons; • BC Wildfire Management Branch – wildfires, safety zones, perimeters, types of fires, evacuation procedures; • Animal handling seminars – donkeys and reptiles – experts will share what is needed to keep these animals safe; • How to set up and maintain an Emergency Animal Reception centre –

Furball meows loud enough to be heard but someone has to crawl under the barn to rescue her. Squawk has a beak that could crush a finger so handle him carefully.

And how do you haul a llama to town in a sedan?

All of these situations are possible.

When rescued, animals are taken to an Animal Reception Centre where physical and emotional care is provided.

PSCS is a nonprofit organization that works with Emergency Operations, Emergency Social Services, Victim Services, RCMP, Fire Services, the Amata Transition House and Crooked Leg Ranch.

In the case of a house fire, when local animal organizations cannot assist, PSCS will step forward.

The team will ensure the owner has all the supplies needed or will find foster homes until it is possible to reunite animals with owners. A disaster can occur at any time – fire, flood, vehicle accidents, family strife and death. Anyone with animals should have a plan for how to keep them safe and for what should happen to them when an owner dies.

The group is based in Quesnel and is a sister to the Pet Safe organization in the US. It is a small, dynamic group that covers the northern half of the province.

Lightning strikes have turned the country side into an inferno and changing winds are pushing the flames towards the city.

Ranchers scramble to gather and move animals but some are out on the range, right in the fire’s path. Homeowners frantically gather valuables and head for relatives in the safety zone. But not every valuable is collected. Furball, fearful of the noisy water bombers, hides under the barn and ignores all of the desperate calls to come. Down the road, a macaw called Squawk and a llama named Bill are home alone. Their owners went to Prince George for the day and have no idea that their home is so close to the fire path.

All Emergency First Responders are activated and an Operations Command Centre is set up. The local Emergency Social Services (ESS) team is joined by fire and police services so every homestead is checked, so families get relocated and animals are removed!

What happens when families and animals get separated?

What will happen to Furball, Squawk and Bill? Also under the auspices of Operations Command, the Pet Safe Coalition Society of Canada (PSCS) offers emergency short term assistance to all animals affected by a disaster.

Earth Day garbage detail Residents and friends of Seasons House were not deterred by the rain on Earth Day! For the third year they took a couple of hours to cleanup along the Riverfront walk and in some of our downtown alleyways.

We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of Louie Hong in the early hours of April 21st, 2014 at Dunrovin Park Lodge.

Louie is survived by his loving wife Shirley, son Don (Kim) and grandsons Alex and Adam, daughter Gina and brother Ray (Muriel) and sister Lil (Jack). Louie was pre deceased by his brother Pat and sister May.

At the request of Louie and family, there will not be a service and in lieu of flowers, please donate to Quesnel Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Jean (Jeannie) passed away after a lengthy battle with Emphysema and Diabetes. She was surrounded by family and friends throughtout the last few days and nights.

She joins her parents Rob and Annie Spooner, Brother Bobby, and Nephew Steve.

We are sure that are all enjoying the Blue Jay’s Baseball games and curling matches together.

Also, gone before, Jean’s first husband Terry MacDonald, Mother’s and Father’s in Law, Gladys & Charlie MacDonlad and Olive & Ben Blacklaw, Sister-inlaw Shirley Chouinard, Nephews Randy & Henry Chouinard, and Brothers-in-law Stege & Ben Bjornson.

Celebration of Life will be held at the Quesnel Senior’s Center, 461 Carson Ave, Quesnel, BC May 31, 2014 from 2-5 pm., with refreshments to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to the following foundations: Diabetes, Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Calvin C Foster passed away at home on April 5, at the age of 56. He is preceded by his fathers Owen McEachern & John Foster, and survived by his mother Shirley, his brothers James and Allen, and his children Christa, Amaris, Daniel, and Gilead. He cared deeply for his family and for the community, and his life was devoted to shining Christ’s love into every corner, especially those less privileged. We will miss him for many years to come. Condolences can be sent to Shirley Foster, or donations can be made in his memory to the Canadian Mental Health Association.

BEATH, Rita Carole Marlene

Our Mom peacefully passed in hospice on April 17, 2014.

Rita was born February 9, 1943 in Turtleford, Saskatchewan. She moved to Quesnel in 1971 and so enjoyed living in the Cariboo. She had numerous friends and many, many fond memories.

She is predeceased by her parents Jim & Myrtle Pattison and her loving husband Dave Beath She is survived by her son James (Paula), Granddaughter Raine, Great Grandson Sylas and Daughter Rio. Her smile, laughter and love for life will forever be cherished by her family and friends.

A Celebration for Life will be held on Sunday April 27, 2014 at 1:00pm in the Royal Canadian Legion Hall.

Those wishing to honour Rita’s memory by way of donation may do so to Dunrovin Hospice House.

October 11, 1957 ~ April 17, 2014 It is with great sadness that the family of Debby Richardson announces her passing. Debby was born and raised in Quesnel where she met and married her soul mate Les Richardson.

They raised their children Leslee-Ann, Erin and Steven (Nata) here and watched their granddaughters Morgan and Sydney grow up in Quesnel as well.

Debby is also survived by her mom, Liz Trifunovich and siblings Donna Fitzgerald (Terry), Nadine Trifunovich Allen (Alex), and Roy Trifunovich (Nikki).

As well as a huge extended family and many caring friends.

You were always willing to take on new responsibilities and giving it 100%.

Our team members at Candian Tire always had to be careful because Dwayne had such a great sense of humour. He would jump out and scare you at any time or pull off a very funny prank with his quiet chuckle, his big smile and followed by his laughter!

Powering up our love for our neighbour

This scripture has been used by Christians for decades and sometimes without much thought.

It is used to encourage us to do good things for our neighbours. The passage is: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and

So how do we love God? I have two suggestions.

First by obeying Him (John 14:15). The only way we can obey Him is by reading His word, the Bible. There are lots of how-to books out there but there is nothing that will compare with reading the Bible daily – God speaks to you through it. Secondly, share your faith with others. When we love someone we can’t stop talking about them

(Matthew 10:32-33; Acts 1:8).

We don’t have to be preachers or teachers, just people who are willing to share our story. Start today, there are many good Bible reading plans.

And don’t forget to share your story – it’s powerful.

Williams Lake opened it's doors to cowboys and cowgirls for the indoor rodeo last weekend and Gold Pan riders made the short trip south to show their stuff.

Dyson Laneve, of Quesnel won first in junior breakaway roping, followed by Williams Lake's Brianna Billy and Abbotsford's Courtenay May tied for second/ third.

In junior barrel racing, Brooke Call of 150 Mile House took first.

Mariah Mannering and Alexis Glassford, both of Quesnel, took second and third respectively.

Bailey Fuller of Riske Creek took first in breakaway roping, followed by Quesnel's Dustin Spiers. Kristen Bell of Houston took third.

Rod May of Abbotsford and Tim Pellam of Langley took first in team roping. The Quesnel/ Houston team of Spiers and Bell took second. Tim Terepocki of Kamloops and Ty Lyttton of 108 Mile Ranch took third.

Ryan Jasper of Riske Creek held on the longest in bull riding to claim first, followed by Matt O'Flynn of Quesnel. Dog Creek's Bryan Adolph rounded out the top three.

The rodeo also featured wild horse races. Kyle Harstad from Breton Alberta took first in the event.Waylon Wasylciw from Edmonton Alberta came in

second, followed by Alan Puhallo of Quesnel in third.

In tie down roping, Alkali Lake's Willee Twan came in first. Russell Glassford, of Quesnel, and Cole Churchill, of Westwold, tied for second/third.

Owen Hawkings of Barriere took first in junior steer riding, followed by Rhett Bloomfield, also of Barriere. Wendel Williams of Williams Lake rounded out the top three.

In steer wrestling, Kamloops' Jackson Scott was the fastest in getting the steer to the ground.

Andre Aspell of 150 Mile House followed close behind, with Victoria's John Davies rounding out the top three.

Cole Scott of Kamloops conquered the saddle bronc, followed by Alexis Creek's Garrett Madley in second. Ryland Derose of Kamloops took third.

IN Bareback, Orlan McGuffin of Ellensberg WA. took first, followed by Williams Lake's Tyrone Hunlin.

The next Wild horse race event will be in at the Princeton BCRA rodeo May 10 and 11.

Quesnel motocross riders hit the dirt

While the snow was still melting around Quesnel, the first week of April, die hard motocross racers left the snow behind and headed south to the first round of BCMA racing in Ashcroft.

They arrived an 11th hour decision to cancel the first race of the season due to poor track conditions as a result of freezing temperatures that caused a lot of damage to the watering system.

While racers from the Cariboo gathered, and word got out that there wouldn’t be a race after all, Kamloops Whispering Pines Race Track also heard of the cancellation and opened their gates, gathered up some volunteers and got their track ready for all the travellers to at least have a place to ride for the weekend of April 5 – 6.

So as it turned out, despite the Quesnel track still covered in three feet of snow and no where to practice before their first race, it turned out to be an excellent weekend for a practice due to the cancellation.

However, the next race was also scheduled in Ashcroft for the Easter weekend. Due to emergency maintenance, which was needed immediately, Scott Davis, Wayne Shepherd and Brian Watson from Quesnel volunteered to spend a few days in Ashcroft preparing the track for the next event.

Racers from all over the south and north attended the next event held over the Easter weekend, with Quesnel Riders Jackson Nickolet #671, Dayne Cutrell #55, and Jordan Brears #41, all taking home top trophies in their categories to kick off the beginning of the 2014 BCMA racing.

This weekend, many more of the Quesnel racers are off to Kamloops for round three, then back home to Quesnel to get ready to host rounds 4 and 5 in our home town on May 3 – 4 at the Quesnel Motocross Track on Oval Rd. This year we see a lot of the racers all moving up in classes making it much more exciting as the Quesnel racer’s are making a name for themselves in BCMA racing.

The Quesnel track is now open and we invite all interested riders, from beginners to pros, to come out and spend some quality family time in the great outdoors.

Memberships for the track are manditory for insurance purposes and can be purchased at Out Back Recreation or Full Throttle Motor Sports.

We look forward to seeing our community come out and cheer on our local racers the first weekend in May. –Submitted by Gerri Shepherd

Serendipity on the greens

Two 1994 Correlieu graduates score two hole in ones in less than 24hrs of each other in Las Vegas.

A group of six of us have been going for the last five years on annual golf trips to places like Palm Springs, LA, San Diego, Scottsdale, Mesquite, St George, Las Vegas to play the top courses in each location.

We have our trips in March or April when weather is bad here but were dieing to play golf so its a good way to start season off.

This is what happened in Sin City: On Thursday, Apr 17 at the TPC Las Vegas, Joga Sandhu (a member of the Quesnel golf club) lined up on the par three 16th hole which played 170 yards.

He hit a seven iron which hit the green over a sand bunker. He thought it was safe and turned around when playing partners said "hey the ball is still moving."

Once he turned around he saw the ball creeping towards hole and then disappear.

Then it was just pandemonium on the tee box; every one on the golf course knew there was a hole-in-one. Mr. Sandhu was more than happy to cover the cost of lunch/drinks after the round.

The group of six were so excited that they had someone in the group that finally had a hole in one.

The next day on Friday the 18, the group were honored to play the very beautiful and exclusive private Dragonridge Country Club in the hills of Henderson, Nevada.

Amanjot Kalirai lined up on hole two which was also a 170 yard shot slightly downhill. He pulled out a seven iron as well.

When Kalirai struck the ball he knew it was a good safe shot to the middle of the green and he quickly picked up his broken tee and started to watch the ball.

The ball landed about 8-10 feet before the hole and just kept rolling towards flagstick and all of a sudden it disappeared and the celebrations were on.

The nice people from the clubhouse came after they heard all the yelling and screaming just to confirm and congratulate Kalirai on the hole in one.

The odds of an amateur part time golfer are approximately 13,000 to 1.

What are the odds of two golfers from Quesnel B.C. hitting two hole-in-ones in less than 24 hours and within five holes of each other at top end PGA calibre courses?

We never forget any of our trips because the golf courses we pick are exceptional and the group that we go with are great friends.

This trip both Quesnel graduates will never forget both of them had there first ever hole in ones in Sin City.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE Application for a minor amendment to Permit 5804 Under the Provisions of the Environmental Management Act West Fraser Mills Ltd., doing business as Quesnel River Pulp Company, intend to submit this amendment application to the Director to amend Permit 5804, issued May 27, 1981, and last amended January 7, 2011 which authorizes the discharges to the air from a thermo-mechanical/bleached chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp (TMP/BCTMP) mill.

The land upon which the facility is situated and the discharge occurs is Plan 26442, Lot 1 District Lot 5012, except Plan 27974 and R/W 27072 subject to stat R/W PGP 39252, located at 1000 Finning Road Quesnel, BC V2J 6A1, within the Cariboo Regional district.

The amendment requests that the following conditions be changed as follows: Section 1.3 Pulp Refining System, site reference E214087, vent 22 TMP Venturi Fan Exhaust be renamed to vent 22 Steam Separator Exhaust to reflect change in associated air flow with the LCR Energy Conservation Project.

Section1.4 TMP/BCTMP Process Equipment and Sulphur Dioxide Scrubber Exhaust, site references E284590 and E209815, be amended to reflect the following safety improvements: • Chip conveyor exhausts #1 and 4, fans will be installed to reduce dust accumulations within the conveyor gallery.

• Add sodium sulphite bag-house exhaust #59, which will be used instead of the sulphur dioxide scrubber exhaust #58 to reflect changes in raw materials.

The maximum authorized discharge of the existing permit 5804 remains the unchanged.

Any person who may be adversely affected by the proposed amendment and wishes to provide relevant information may, within 30 days after the last date of posting, publishing, service or display, send written comments to the applicant, with a copy to the Regional Manager, Environmental Protection at Suite 400-640 Borland Street, Williams Lake, V2G 4T1. Import manufacturers provide most sizzle in N.Y. NEW YORK – There was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show.

It seems the Big Four shot their lightning bolts at the preceding Detroit and Los Angeles auto extravaganzas and left it to the import manufacturers to dazzle here.

Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano. The midsize model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-generation. The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerang-shaped taillights Keith Morgan ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals.

Inside, up to five passengers can expect more of a luxury ride than they might have enjoyed in the outgoing version – heated and cooled front seats will impress those upfront. The trend in this segment to include huge sunroofs continues here.

Under the hood, Nissan stays with the trusty 3.5-litre six-cylinder powerplant matched to a continuously variable transmission. Expect to see the Murano in the showrooms at the tail end of

the year.

Before moving on, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept should be mentioned as it offers a clue to what the new Maxima might resemble. And boy, is it a looker despite the horrible orange colour of the show car! It too features a panoramic roof stretching almost from the windshield to the rear window.

A production model version is expected later in the year, which suggests the L.A. show might benefit from that timetable.

Any new Toyota Camry is an instant hit, especially in North America where it’s been the best selling car for 12 years. Despite that, the Japanese manufacturer launched an all-new 2015 model, just three years after introducing a redesign.

It incorporates design touches now appearing in sibling models, including a deeper grille that more resembles an upmarket Lexus. Interior materials are upgraded and a large central display matches the design trend of its competitors. Two trims are added; a sporty XSE with some luxury touches and a Hybrid SE. Toyota sticks with its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, and 3.5-litre, six-cylinder engines plus its Hybrid

Hyundai would like to put a serious dent in the Toyota Camry success story with its own mid-size sedan – the redesigned Sonata. It’s likely the introduction of a sharp looking Sonata in 2011 helped prompt Toyota into taking a serious look at upping the ante in the Camry. Other competitors have also risen to the challenge. Now the seventh-generation, newly styled, sharper looking 2015 Sonata raises the bar again with improved ride and handling plus advanced driver assistance and safety equipment.

Unlike the Camry, the Sonata stays with purely four-cylinder engines.

Standard is a 2.4-litre power plant and a turbocharged 2.0L four is an option.

The one domestic manufacturer that did show up with something more exciting than the rest was Jeep, which introduced the compact Renegade. It is the iconic brand’s first foray into the small SUV segment.

Its funky looks and fuel efficiency should make it an urban dweller hit but it also boasts best-in-class offroad capability, which may just bring in buyers from the growing outdoor adventure seekers.

Two engine choices: a 2.4-litre Tigershark engine with MultiAir2 paired to the segment’s first nine-speed automatic transmission, or a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine with six-speed manual transmission.

Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear, whether on the road or trails, is vital to your safety.

Don’t believe me? Just ask someone who, unfortunately, has had a spill.

Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concussion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed how good shape she was in.

It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life.

She was wearing leathers, gloves, protective boots, and a helmet.

Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point.

Furthermore, for those who have experienced an accident, and have been in proper attire, I’m pretty sure

you weren’t thinking. “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops!”

When I ride, I’m in full garb.

Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately.

I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it.

Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road.

That’s a helmet.

If you’re not going to invest any money in anything else, protect your noggin’. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet.

In fact, I’ll add this too.

Make sure it fits properly.

Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly.

I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you.

You only have one head.

Use it. And protect it.

Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile.

There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent.

Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case.

Some jackets come with

armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t.

I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in.

Pants: Leather, textile and Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted. I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection.

Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots.

That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather footwear that at least covers your anklebone.

Speaking of which, have you ever hit your anklebone on a table leg? Hurts, doesn’t it. Now imagine a 220-kilo machine falling on it. Think safety.

What’s great about the industry now, is the availability to cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protected.

Bonus.

Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/ fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists. Some gloves also have reinforced points with carbon fibre to

prevent further damage.

Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove!

Too much room can cause blisters. Too little room cuts off circulation.

Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This material is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So you can take off or put them on when needed.

Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt! Wearing elbow and kneepads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/ breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles. Along with their helmet, of course.

Accessories: If you want added piece of mind, that’s available, too.

I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care! They work.

A full chest protector is also available along with I’ve only scratched the surface for gear out there, but these are the basics to getting started. Bottom line, you likely won’t regret being fully suited on the road. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii.

They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world.

While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought.

Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right?

One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected.

With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks.

My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition!

Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.”

Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition.

Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle.

I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school.

As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition.

Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold!

Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more.

Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that.

All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

*Odometer: The law allows an odometer to be replaced when broken, but the repair must be recorded and the true mileage needs to be disclosed. CarProof and ICBC vehicle history reports can reveal more about how far a vehicle has really traveled. Even AirCare, where available, can help. And Walt is wrong; altering an odometer is a crime.
