Website shows area funding choices Residents of the Columbia Valley now have a new way to access information about the Columbia
Valley Community Directed Funds (CVCDF) Program and the funding process for projects.
“The Community Directed Funds program in the Columbia Valley was the first such program in the Regional District,” explained Wendy Booth, Chair of the Columbia Valley Community Directed Funds Committee.
To that end, the RDEK website has a new page dedicated to the CVCDF Program. There you will find a copy of the Community Priorities Plan, background information about the program, and information about how to present
funding proposals to the Committee. To date, the Program has allocated over $160,000 to a variety of organizations in the Columbia Valley. One project supported by the Committee, a $26,000 grant to the Family

OUTER SPACE Creating an outdoor oasis Starting seeds in plantable pots One of the tricks gardeners in cooler climates have up their sleeves is starting seeds indoors to give the plants a headstart when it is time to plant them outside. Of course, you can always get already started plants at your local greenhouse, but there is something magical and exciting in seeing the first sprouts emerge from your seed trays. One problem people sometimes run into is that the seedlings come up great and look nice and healthy, but when transplanted into the garden, they seem to suffer and wilt. There could be several reasons for that, but
one way of lessening the transplant shock on your young plants can be to start seeds in plantable pots. You can use biodegradable pots and trays made from compressed peat or coconut fibres or use peat pellets. You use plantable pots and trays just like you would their plastic equivalents. Fill them with seed starting mix and plant the seeds according to directions. Plantable peat pellets are just nondescript, little brown disks when you get them at the garden centre. Once you soak them in water, however, they expand to more than six times their size and become
self-contained growing units. A fine mesh that will later break down in the soil, holds in the growing medium, and seeds are inserted through an opening in the top of the pellet. When it is time to transplant your seedlings into a garden outside, you can skip the step of slipping the pot off your plant and simply place the entire pot or pellet in the ground. It is important you cover the entire pot in soil to prevent air from drying out the exposed parts of the pot and in turn your plant inside. Especially with more rigid and compact plantable pots it might also be a good idea to break the pots apart a
bit before planting to help the decomposition process and the young roots emerging. One step you have to do with any seedling started indoors, whether they are in plantable or plastic containers is to harden them off before transplanting them into the ground. That means gradually getting your young plants used to the harsher conditions outdoors. You should allow a minimum of seven to ten days for this process. Start by putting the trays of plants in a sheltered spot outdoors, for two hours during the day. A covered porch is an ideal spot. Avoid setting pots or flats directly on the ground or
you run the risk of your young plants falling prey to bugs and other critters. Bring your plants in and out daily and continue to water the trays as needed, but protect
them from heavy rain. Slowly increase the amount of time you leave them outdoors, as well as the exposure to wind and sunshine. This will toughen up your plants and by the
time the frosts are finished, the plants are fully conditioned to being outside. However, some may still need protection against strong, cold winds and late spring frosts.

National Day of Mourning April 28, 2014
Take some time and remember those who died at work Submitted
National Day of Mourning April 28, 2014
A day to remember lives lost in the workplace and resolve to prevent future tragedies The numbers tell the story. In 2012, 977* workplace deaths were recorded in Canada – an increase from 919 the previous year. This represents more than 2.7 deaths every single day. In the 20 year period from 1993 to 2012, 18,039* people lost their lives due to work-
related causes (an average of 902 deaths per year). The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress. The Day of Mourning has since spread to about 80 countries around the world and has been adopted by the AFL-CIO
and the International Confederation of Free Trade. The Canadian flag on Parliament Hill will fly at half-mast. Workers will light candles, don ribbons and black armbands and observe moments of silence. Businesses are asked to participate by declaring April 28 a Day of Mourning and to strive to prevent workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. CCOHS (Canadian

The essential rudiments of any healthy workplace are work practices and environment – both of these elements must be safe. Without one or the other, the well-being of an employee cannot be assured. An alternative to shipping bitumen
David Black. by David Black My name is David Black. I am the majority owner of Black Press, the company that owns this newspaper. This is the first of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime. I am a reasonably sensible and conservative businessman, not an alarmist. All of the information in this column can be confirmed from public sources. The oil industry wants to export Alberta bitumen to Asia via tankers. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. Bitumen, even if it is diluted, does not float in sea water if there

is sediment present. This has been proven many times, most recently in a thorough Environment Canada study published on November 30 2013. Page 51 of the study provides graphic evidence of sunken bitumen. Given that there is an abundance of sediment along the BC coast, the bitumen will sink rapidly and there will be little chance of recovering any of it if there is a spill. By Northern Gateway’s own admission the likelihood of a bitumen spill at sea is over 10% over the next 50 years. Others say that it is much higher. We are in agreement with the position taken by the Coastal First Nations that even the slightest risk of a spill of bitumen at sea is unacceptable. The grounding of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989 is often
Tamara L’Hoost
mArKEtiNG CoNsULtANt
held up as an example of how bad an oil spill at sea can be, however, a spill of bitumen at sea would be much worse. The Exxon Valdez carried light crude and lost 250,000 barrels, one eighth of a tanker load. The light oil floated and could be removed from the beaches. Even so, after four years of work with up to 11,000 workers and 1,400 boats involved, less than 10% of it was recovered. Roughly 200,000 birds and many kinds of other wildlife were killed. Approximately 1,300 miles of shoreline were affected and the fishery has yet to fully recover. Bitumen is very different. It would harden up on shore and much of it would sink to the bottom, making it unrecoverable and killing virtually everything with which it came in contact. Imagine if we lost a full tanker load. Some say that, with GPS-based navigation and double hulls, spills such as Exxon Valdez are not possible today. They are wrong. Double hulls do not prevent hull fracture if there is a collision at speed, only if there is a gentle scrape. As for the GPS claim, most marine accidents are caused by human inattention, not by a lack of knowledge about position. All ships carried systems to indicate their location before GPS came along. The Exxon Valdez crew could have glanced at their instruments to determine their location but they didn’t, neither did the crew on the Queen of the North. Marine disasters regularly occur and a quick search of the internet shows human error is most often the problem. Undoubtedly there will be many
Yves Michaud

more marine accidents in future. Our grandchildren will not thank us if we willingly risk the destruction of the BC coast on our watch. Fortunately there is a solution that is beneficial for all concerned: all we have to do is build a refinery at Kitimat. The refinery will convert the bitumen to gasoline, diesel and jet fuel which float and evaporate if they are spilled. Often little or no spill remediation is required. These refined fuels simply do not cause the habitat destruction of conventional or synthetic crude oil, or anywhere near the devastation caused by bitumen. The second part of this OPED will run in the next issue. It will discuss the enormous value-add benefits and environmental advantages of a modern green refinery. The pipeline from Alberta and the tanker fleet to export the refined fuels will also be considered. Let me declare my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in BC. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers. If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on this next month.

Letter: Regarding Bill 24, ALC legislation We are relieved and very encouraged to finally see potential changes to the ALR. Kootenay livestock association has been asking for and working with our MLA Bill Bennett to make these desperately needed changes for the last 5 years. We are so fortunate to have these three ministers Bennett, Pimm and Thompson that have worked tirelessly to get this legislation moving. It is a very controversial issue and it has been and continues to be a difficult task. We need more politicians that are prepared to do the right thing and not just take the easy road. This is a rough road with lots of pot holes and we thank and admire them all for staying the course. It is important to remember that the primary purpose of the ALR legislation from 1972 was to “preserve agricultural land and encourage the establishment and maintenance of farms”. The ALC in our opinion has done a very poor job of the “encouragement and establish and maintenance of farms”. That is sadly evident by the loss of our agricultural producers due to age and economics, as well as the extreme lack of young people staying on or returning to the land. The ALC can argue lack of resources, the 1972 list of allowable uses, etc. etc. We have heard all their excuses, but we maintain that if they would have taken their tunnel vision blinders off
Shannon Stewart CirCULAtioN
and re-read their mandate they would have done the right thing and started encouraging governments a long time ago, to take action on the real problem which is the loss not of our agricultural lands, but the loss of our agricultural producers. That is exactly what bill 24 is about, and it is high time!! It is evident that some folks look at the changes and can only see subdivisions, agricultural land sacrifice, and spooks in the hayloft! Those folks are not being fair, or they are not clearly reading the entire document with an open mind. Bill 24 will offer our agricultural producers the opportunity to diversify, which should better their economics, it should make the opportunities more attractive to our young people, and both of those are critical to the survival of our industry. Bill 24 will also allow the ALC to consider economic, cultural and social values when looking at applications. The regional panels will have a stronger ability to make common sense decisions on applications from their regions. You can’t argue that folks that live in our region know much better what is best for our region much more than an outsider from the lower mainland. For those that think and have stated publicly that there is no non productive agricultural land in the Kootenay’s they need

to get their butt in a saddle and ride the rocky ridges that have no availability to irrigation and many, many other area’s that are not viable for food production. Throw enough money and yes we could make lettuce grow on top of fisher peak, but that is not economically viable and common sense decisions need to be made regarding the land that should be within the ALR and the land that should not. The policies and regulations that support bill 24 are not fully drafted yet and all three ministers have committed to consultation with our industry regarding those, what more can we ask for?? Bill 24 is a life breath to a dying industry. We thank ministers Bennett, Pimm, and Thompson also premier Christy Clark for all their unwavering support, hard work and dedication to our industry. We strongly encourage this government to remain “cowboy tough and country strong”. stay the course, and work with our industry to ensure bill 24 has the right policies and regulations to make the future of our industry bigger and better. Sometimes we all need to be reminded meal by meal that: If you eat you are involved in agriculture. ~Faye and Street, Cranbrook

School District 5 officials discuss issues with education minister

Peter Fassbender, minister of education. Submitted Minister of Education, Peter Fassbender, met with School District 5 (SD5) Trustees after touring Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) in Cranbrook, Isabella Dicken Elementary School (IDES) in Fernie and Sparwood Secondary School (SSS) in Sparwood on April 22nd, 2014. He is the fourth Minister to tour MBSS in as many years. According to SD5 Mount Baker R e p l a c e m e n t Committee Chair, Chris Johns, the replacement of the aging high school as a Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC), an initiative designed to bring educational ser-
vices and community resources together in a new high school building, was a key agenda item for the SD5 Board of Education to discuss with Minister Fassbender. Mount Baker was identified five years ago as being over capacity with deteriorating conditions. According to Johns, it’s the number one priority replacement for the District. “Frankly, we’ve done more work and more public consultation on this NLC initiative than any other District in the province, including those Districts who’ve been approved. We have key partnerships with the City of Cranbrook, Key City Theatre (KCT), our MLA Bill Bennett
and most recently the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) and MP David Wilks. We just need a commitment from government to go ahead.” Despite the pressing need for replacement of MBSS, there were a number of other issues brought up with Minister Fassbender including bargaining, trades training and cogovernance. Adequate and sustainable funding was the top priority discussed. According to SD5 Board Chair, Frank Lento, the overall provincial budget for education remains static, and that’s a problem. “Both our student enrolment and the government’s funding remain pretty much unchanged year to year”, says Lento. “But every year the Board must make cuts to our budget in order to meet basic cost increases such as inflation, carbon offsets, BC hydro, Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums and other mandatory benefit cost increases.” According to Lento, these cost increases –
which remain unfunded by the provincial government—cost SD5 an additional one million dollars plus each year.

Horoscope for the Week: April 24, 2014 Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading • 888.352.2936 sunstarastrology@gmail.com • www.sunstarastrology.com
Tip of the Week: The Sun entered Taurus on April 18 at 8:55 pm PDT. It did so in the wake of the now virtually infamous Cardinal Grand Cross. Over the coming four weeks the overall dynamic will take on a particularly practical, sober and business oriented focus. Our ‘business’is not necessarily specific to commerce here. It implies whatever is especially important in our lives and there are usually a variety of fronts. As much as a practical and industrious theme is implied, the focus is also upon healing, psychological, emotional and spiritual healing in particular. Empathy, compassion and forgiveness for self and others are often if not always where to begin. The intellect/ego aspect our mind is the dividing, sorting, categorizing, differentiating and separating function of the mind. And it certainly has its place. However, when this function of the mind is over emphasized, it produces states of imbalance, separation and essentially fragmentation. The basic symptoms are projected anger, judgement, blame and demonization (seeing another or others in general as wrong, bad or even evil while blindly dismissing our own limitations, issues and imbalances and so on). So, amidst the usual daily tasks and those linked to this time of the year, like gardening and spring cleaning, this other, deeper and equally valid layer of focus is woven into the game plan for this time. Seeing healers and therapists of all kinds, opening to new, positive and empowering wisdom knowledge or at least intentionally doing the inner work yourself are good and wise choices that represent alignment with this overall energy pattern. This inner work can begin by simply saying‘thank you’and/or ‘I forgive you’with genuine sincerity. Morals and ethics aside, these actions are keys to centering in the heart which is a golden key to health and happiness. Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) The time has come to really get down to business. By now you Attending to financial interests, issues and/or responsibilities have probably activated a series of fresh leads and starts. Now is likely now. Entering new territory now A recent twist and turn towards relationships finds you implies nurturing important friendships. Aspiring to achieve feeling the love, or longing to. While romance is implied, it what may be deemed higher ideals is featured. While you have may be woven with spiritual threads as well. Either way, there likely been and are willing to work hard, key collaborations is reason to say you feel inspired. This trend will increase over will save you a lot of time, energy and money. Reach out to the coming weeks. Though you may not go chasing it, prayers for it are streaming through your heart and mind. strike win/win deals with warm leads. This can literally include you home now you are prepared to really roll-up your sleeves. It and residence. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick. By Tom Fletcher Black Press Newly appointed Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick is meeting with B.C. Agriculture Council representatives this week to discuss their growing concerns about a plan to set new rules for protected farmland in the B.C. Interior. When changes to the Agricultural Land Commission were announced in late March, the move was generally endorsed by Rhonda Driediger, then chair of the BCAC.
Dreidiger, a berry grower in the Fraser Valley, said opening up the Interior, Kootenay and North regions to secondary uses based on social and economic needs would help farms innovate and stay in business. Dreidinger has been succeeded as BCAC chair by Stan Vander Waal, who operates flower greenhouses in Chilliwack. After meeting last week with Letnick, Vander Waal wants changes to the legislation. “It is the position of the B.C. Agriculture Council that as currently written, Bill 24 threatens the sustainability of agriculture in B.C.,” Vander Waal said in a statement. The BCAC is forming a steering committee of member farmers to continue discussions with the government. The changes were spearheaded by Energy Minister Bill Bennett as part of the govenment’s “core review” of operations. They would allow consideration of more non-farm uses outside the Island, South Coast
and Okanagan regions where most of B.C.’s farm income is generated. Bill 24 also formalizes the cabinet appointment process for the ALC’s six regional panels, so two or three local farmers make the front-line decisions on applications for permitted uses such as a secondary residence. NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons has protested the legislation since it was revealed. “The decision to protect land suitable for agriculture 40 years ago was for the benefit of future generations,” Simons said. “Having two zones and the ‘regional panels’ make decisions about agricultural land is too political.” Bennett said the current ALC chair has refused to appoint local panel members recommended by government, centralizing the ALC function and subverting the intent of changes made in 2003 to provide local input to decisions.

Reno-nation: Try starting efficiency with your home windows
Your windows are a great place to start energy efficiency at home. To counter the low heat-retaining efficiency

gies have led to the perfecting of highly energy-
efficient windows. The improvements include low emittance coating, the use of inert gases between the panes, lowconductivity spacers, and improved window frames. Low emittance coating is a thin, invisible metallic coating which is applied directly to the surface of the window glazing. It reduces heat loss by reflection, transmitting most of the solar spectrum rays towards the interior. The coating also prevents the penetration of heat emitted by objects outside the structure and blocks most of the ultraviolet rays that discolour carpets and fabrics. By filling the space between the panes of a window with inert gas, thermal transmittance (heat loss) by conduction and by convection is reduced. The new low-conductivity spacers are a considerable improvement as far as energy efficiency is concerned. Generally speaking, they can increase the efficiency of a low emittance window filled with argon by 20 percent.
The effectiveness of the techniques and the materials used varies considerably and consumers should always rely on the Energy Rating (ER) number. A frame made from efficient materials will reduce heat loss by conduction to a minimum. Thanks to stronger materials, frames and sashes
are now much thinner. This creates a larger surface area of glazing, which in turn increases solar heat gains. Take
note that frames manufactured from a blend of materials draw benefits from the synergy of each of their strengths.

SD5 gives hats off to the White Hatter Students in School District 5 (SD5) are probably some of our more tech-savvy digital citizens. But using the latest and greatest apps, chat rooms and social networks doesn’t necessarily mean that they know how to keep themselves –and their friends— safe. That’s where Darren Laur of Personal Protection Systems Inc, steps in. Dubbing himself “The White Hatter” Darren self-describes as
one of the “good guys” and he’s dedicated his life to helping others stay safe on-line. Most recently, Darren showcased the latest on internet safety and social media to parents at Key City Theatre on April 9th and to students in Cranbrook on April 10th and 11th and the Elk Valley on April 14th and 15th. Currently a serving Staff Sergeant with the Victoria City Police Department, Darren has

over 28 years of law enforcement experience with a strong background in on-line and social media investigations. He is an internationally recognized safety expert and advocate, award-winning author and renowned international keynote speaker. Trustees Trina Ayling and Chris Johns attended the Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) presentation while Trustee Patricia Whalen attended the Laurie Middle School (LMS) presentation and Trustee Bev Bellina attended the Elk Valley presentation on April 14th. “Darren provided some excellent resources for our school community,” says Ayling. “He understands digital culture on the same level as our students. He ‘gets’ what they do, and
why they do it. He’s not about limiting their online experiences, he’s about providing them with the tools to enhance these experiences in a safe environment.” Johns agrees saying, “There were at least two-dozen high school students surrounding Darren following his presentation. Trustee Ayling and I spent close to an hour talking with his wife and business partner, Beth, before Darren was free to speak with us.” The presentations were two hours in length and covered over two dozen need-to-know topics about digital media including cell phone, Web Cam, and chat room safety, why your “digital Dossier” matters (and how to protect it) and the law as it relates to Cyber Bullying and Sexting.
“I’m pretty tech-savvy –or so I thought”, says Whalen, “but after listening to Darren I realize how much I didn’t know. I think a lot of our students fall into this category, and I’m glad Darren was able to provide them with some insight into how to avoid the pitfalls of technology while still enjoying the benefits.” To date, Darren and Beth have presented their Internet and Social Media Safety programs to over 200 Schools throughout British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the United States. Work to rule action by teachers started this week across province by members to authorize. The BCTF has rejected the government’s offer for a 10-year agreement with pay increases totalling 6.5% over the first six years and additional wage increases to be negotiated for the final four years. There has been little change to the “lowball offer” on wages and no movement on the longrunning dispute over class size limits and special needs support, Iker said. BCTF negotiators countered with a threeyear proposal with three per cent plus a costof-living increase in each year. With compounding and current estimates of inflation, BCPSEA calculates that could amount to 13.5 per cent over three
60 school districts, said once stage one strike action begins, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will seek an order that the union pay for its extended benefits during any withdrawal of service. That would cost about $5 million a month for 41,000 public school teachers. “In order that there is in fact pressure on both sides, BCPSEA needs to respond to any phase one activities with measures that put corresponding pressure on the union,” Cameron wrote in a letter to Iker.

BCTF president Jim Iker. By Tom Fletcher
After rejecting an offer from the school district bargaining agency for a longterm contract, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation has served notice it will begin work-to-rule action April 23. BCTF president Jim Iker announced Thursday that 72-hour notice has been given, after union members voted 89 per cent in March to endorse a three-stage strike plan. Phase one includes refusing communication with school managers, arriving no more than an hour before and leaving an hour after school hours, and refusing supervision of students outside class time. It does not affect prearranged voluntary activities such as coaching, but the refusal of supervision requires essential service levels that compel some teachers to assure the safety of students while they are out of classes. Report card preparation and parent meetings will continue. Iker said progress at the bargaining table will determine how long phase one action would last. Phase two of the BCTF plan is rotating one-day walkouts in districts around the province. Phase three, a full-scale strike, would require a second vote
years. Iker said school districts are cutting staff and programs due to ministry budget cuts, and the ministry should at least cover school districts’ costs for increase medical services plan premiums and BC Hydro rate increases. The education ministry says per-pupil funding has increased 38 per cent since 2001, and the ministry has provided $225 million over three years to hire 500 teachers and 400 new special education assistants for the 2012-13 school year. The Off Centre Players in cooperation with Cranbrook Community Theatre are presenting “Calendar Girls” in both Kimberley and Cranbrook as a fundraiser for cancer care in the East Kootenays. Written by Time Firth and Juliette Towhidi and based on the 2003 movie, this stage play chronicles the real-life story of a “Women’s Institute” chapter’s fundraising efforts to support a local hospital in Yorkshire, England while a loved one goes through cancer treatment. The women come up with a brilliant idea to produce a calendar to raise money – not just any calendar – a beautiful calendar of themselves posing in the nude. This funny and poignant show features so many amazing talents from both the Kimberley and Cranbrook area. Many faces will be familiar to local theatre-goers, but we are pleased to introduce a few newcomers as well. Directed by Terry Miller, “Calendar Girls” features Killeen Delorme, Susan Hanson, Joanne Wilkinson, Michelle

McCue, Nola Doiron, Michelle LeMay, Maureen Smith, Sioban Staplin, Tylene Turner, Brigitte Franyo, Barry Borgstrom, Thom McCaughey, Jerrod Bondy and Andy Rogers. The lovely cast and crew are the heart and soul of this project and bring their own experiences and wisdom to their characters. Many people in our communities have been affected by cancer and the Off Centre Players would like to help. In 2012, the group produced “Little Shop of Horrors” as a fundraiser for Centre 64 in Kimberley to make upgrades in the theatre. It was so successful that they decided to run another fundraiser – this time with “Calendar Girls”, they are donating 10% of ticket sales and 100% of cast calendar profits to the East Kootenay Foundation for Health for cancer care in our area. “Calendar Girls” will be on stage in Kimberley at Centre 64 from May 6-10, and then in Cranbrook at Studio/Stage Door from May 13-17. Tickets are $20 per person and on sale now – for tickets to the Kimberley show, please visit the Snowdrift Café in the Kimberley Platzl (4272001). For tickets to the Cranbrook show, please visit Lotus Books (4263415). The brave ladies on our cast also agreed to pose nude for a 2015 Cast Calendar and the result is a gorgeous and fun way to support the fundraising efforts of this project. These calendars make a great gift, a fun and sassy addition to your garage wall or a wonderful reminder every month of how we can all be involved in helping cancer patients in the East Kootenays. They are also available for purchase at the ticket locations and in various locations throughout the East Kootenays. Don’t miss out on this incredible show and chance to support friends, family and neighbors – we are all in this together. For more information about you can be involved, please visit The Off Centre Players Facebook page or email us at theoffcentreplayers@gmail. com.

The East Kootenay U13 Avalanche participated in the Alberta Provincials competition and came home wearing bronze medals. Submitted An eager group of 13-year-old Cranbrook boys culminated their three months of hard work with a trip to the Alberta Provincials and ultimately a Bronze medal win. “We were excited to take this group of boys to Edmonton. They have a lot of heart and the potential to win at this level,” said Rob Mogielka,
Head Coach of the East Kootenay Volleyball Club (EKVC). “The boys have dedicated a lot of practice hours to get here,” added Jesse Jimenez, Assistant Coach. The EKVC U13 Avalanche (AVS) boys started in January of 2014 with practices running twice a week. “This was the third tournament the boys played in this year. They placed second in the Premier
Tournament and third in the U14 division of the Cranbrook Cup. ” said Mogielka. The boys, along with their coaches, attended the Provincial finals in Edmonton, AB on April 12th and 13th. They played four games on Saturday earning a second place finish in their division. The Sunday morning match to decide which teams would play for Gold consisted of three
close sets. The EKVC U13 AVS were defeated by Dome Club 1. The boys went on to take the bronze in a two set game with a score of 26-24 in the first set and 25-22 in the second set against NAVC Gold Bears. To find out more about East Kootenay Volleyball Club contact Rob Mogielka at 250919-7447.
Celebrating 11 years raising funds Submitted
It’s been over a decade since the Hungry For Life (HFL) Gala and Auction was first introduced in Cranbrook by local business owner Rick Klassen and physician, Dr. Bob Cutler, to help support citizens in Haiti. Since organizing the first fundraiser in 2004, Klassen and Cutler have returned to this small Caribbean country numerous times as humanitarians leading a team of doctors, nurses and lay people to assist with medical care, food aid, the building and rebuilding of homes and educational structures, drilling of water wells and construction of a free standing medical clinic that opened in 2013. Grande Gauve, a city roughly the same size as Cranbrook, now has sustainable medical care. According to Cutler it literally comes down to saving lives. “We
are supporting Haitians with life-saving surgeries, and continue to provide HIV and tuberculosis testing and treatment at the new medical clinic we helped build”, he says, stating that these diseases have become a significant scourge in post-earthquake Haiti but are being addressed successfully through organizations such as Hungry for Life and other international aid organizations. Klassen points out that this work would not be possible without yearly support from the citizens of Cranbrook. “Local donations, our annual Gala and Auction fundraiser and numerous volunteers make it possible for us to deliver hope and provide the means to rebuild stability,” he explains. “We have challenges here at home, but are relatively well off compared to the almost unimaginable poverty in Haiti which has been com-
pounded by the devastating earthquake in 2010 as well as successive hurricanes. Our small team from Cranbrook delivers a large humanitarian impact year after year.” Asked why he thinks the event is so successful each year, Cutler simply points out that 100% of the profit from Gala evening goes directly to helping the people of Haiti. “It’s important for people to know that their donations go directly to the people”, says Cutler, adding that one of the easiest ways to contribute is to attend the annual Hungry For Life Gala and Auction. “It’s a positive and fun event that financially allows our teams to make a difference. It’s that spirit of hope and support for the Haitian people that keeps us going back.” This year’s Hungry For Life Gala and auction takes place on Saturday, May 10th at the Cranbrook Curling
Club and once again features renowned auctioneer and entertainer Gery Schubert. Dinner is catered by The HeidOut. Dewey, Cheatum and Howe will provide live music for dancing after the dinner and auction portion of the evening and there will be free rides home provided between 10pm and 2am. This year’s theme is Down the Rabbit Hole and guests are encouraged to dress Alice in Wonderland style. Tickets are $100 each, a portion of which is tax deductible, and they can be purchased individually or in tables of eight. For more information, to purchase tickets or to donate auction items please contact Suzanne Thompson in the Kootenay Therapy Centre at 250-4264629 or Jill Cutler at 250-426-4669

Last year the Spring Honda Fun Run collected nearly $8,000 for the ALS Society of B.C. event together and fun day of fitness and fresh air all while supporting a great cause. For those who are running to reach their personal best times, we have chip timing available once again provided by Results Canada, which allows for accurate timing and instant results! Medals will be awarded to the top male and female in each age category. All proceeds from this event go to the ALS Society of BC. ALS (formerly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a degenerative neuromuscular disease that causes those with the
disease to lose the use of voluntary muscles. There is no known cure for ALS. All money raised through our run will help those afflicted by this disease, purchase equipment to aid them in coping with this condition, as well as support essential research. We have donated over $20,000 to the BC ALS Society over the last three years, and we are looking very forward to adding to that total this year. We are so thankful to all the runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters of our local fun run , and we look forward to seeing
a great turnout again this year! Very special thanks to our wonderful title sponsor, Spring Honda for their generous support to help make this event so successful every year. You don’t want to miss out on this fun, local, family event! Registration is available in person at Core Fitness, and Spring Honda. Like our Facebook Page to keep informed on upcoming information!

With new mines, a stable forest industry, a growing tourism industry, government and private investment in infrastructure and the Liquefied Natural Gas industry, British Columbians will have a generational opportunity to get high paying jobs by gaining the skills needed.

Government’s goal is for British Columbians to have first chance at the jobs, Canadians next, immigrants next and then if necessary, temporary foreign workers. Experts say there will not be enough Canadians to fill the jobs over the next 20 years which is a better problem to have than a lack of opportunities.

10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Soil
1. Not Just Dirt! There are more than 70,000 different types of soil in North America alone. One tablespoon of soil contains more microorganisms than there are people living on Earth and it takes a minimum of 500 years to form one inch of topsoil. 2. What is in Soil? Clay, silt and sand are the three types of soil. Most soils are a blend of all three types. Texture and appearance of soil depends on the balance between these three ingredients. Organic matter is also an important component of soil, especially for growing. 3. Test it to Know it! Unfortunately you can’t determine how rich or deficient in nutrients your soil is, just by looking at it. To really understand your soil and create good growing conditions for your plants you need to test it. There are simple and inexpensive soil testing kits available at your local garden centre that will give you quick and somewhat accurate approximate results. If you need a higher level of accuracy, you can get your soil sample sent to a laboratory to be tested. 4. Sweet or Sour? One important measure is the level of pH of your soil as this affects the ability of a plant to take up and use nutrients. It is measured on a scale from 1 to 14 and indicates whether your soil is acidic (also referred to as ‘sour’) or alkaline (also called ‘sweet’). The lower the number, the more acidic the soil. While some plants prefer a higher pH or lower ph, most plants grow best with a soil pH range of 6.0 to 7.0. 5. Can You be Too Sweet? The soil in our area, as a whole, is on the alkaline side. You can add sulphur, compost and or peat moss to help correct the pH level, especially when you grow plants that like a more acidic soil, such as blueberries. Adding a bit of sulphur at time of planting to create more acidic soil can also help in preventing scab on potatoes. Should your soil be too acidic, lime can be added. 6. A Precarious Balance. Once you know what is in your soil and what is lacking, you can add fertilizer to get the perfect balance for growing. When it comes to fertilizers, it helps to remember the three most important nutrients in it and what they do for the plant. Most fertilizers have a list of three numbers on the label. They indicate the amount of nitrogen (promotes vigorous green growth), phosphorous (helps with development of roots and flowers) and potassium (strengthens the plant). There might also be other (micro-)nutrients in your fertilizer. 7. Recycling at its Best. Healthy soil grows healthy plants and one of the key elements is organic matter. The easiest way of getting organic material into your garden is by adding composted plant matter to provide nutrients and improve soil structure. The key is to get a balance of carbon-rich (also called ‘brown’) and nitrogen-rich (or ‘green’) materials in your compost pile and add moisture to provide a breeding ground for beneficial bacteria. 8. Grow Your Own Fertilizer. An old fertilizing technique for your garden that is becoming more popular again is to grow a cover crop such as fall rye or a garden legume mix at the end of the season. Once your garden is cleaned out, you can simply sow your cover crop seeds and watch them grow. When spring comes, till the entire crop under to have it fertilize the soil. 9. Be Prepared! Before planting, it is important to prepare the ground by digging or cultivating the soil. This helps to aerate the soil, exposes pests to predators and gives you the chance to add amendments. Some people might use a rototiller to cultivate their garden soil, but a shovel or spade will do. Start by removing one spade full of soil and then filling the hole with soil from the adjoining spot. Continue to dig and fill, working your way up and down your garden. 10. A Soil for Every Job. Not all soils are created equal, but all have their purpose. From composted manures that add nutrients and organic matter to your garden to make the soil more crumbly and able to retain water to a special blend for containers, including perlite and moisture crystals - find out at your garden centre which soil will be best for your planting project.

Equality organization hosting AGM in May Submitted The East Kootenay Organization for Human Dignity and Equality (EKOHDE) has been providing education and programming in the East Kootenay since 2003.Our Mission statement: We pledge to work for caring com-
munities, free from racism and opposed to cultural alienation and hate crimes, communities that offer equal opportunity to all, and thus provide the prerequisites of a just, social and economic future for the children and the full development of human resources in an

atmosphere of harmonious solidarity, respect of individual rights and appreciation of cultural diversity. We partner with the Elk Valley Metis Association and a recent project (funded by the Province) has been the development of the Humanity Network (http://www.humanitynetwork.ca/) which connects communities in the East Kootenay so they may work together to make all of the region a welcoming place where we all want to live, that everyone regardless of background and differences, feels they are treated equitably and with
respect and has the right and duty to do likewise to others. The goal is to increase awareness of human dignity and the values of humanity that Canada and BC have been identified with, and to grow our collective understanding of the importance of these values in our communities. The Humanity Network hosted an event in December which was the celebration of International Mountain Day (December 11) funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of BC through Embrace BC. Anthropologist, author and explorer Wade Davis offered two
presentations, one in Cranbrook and one in Invermere. Well attended, Mr. Davis’ presentation had a profound effect on local youth one of whom may be travelling to the Amazon. The Network has selected the next 3 United Nations International Days for celebration. EKOHDE will be having their Annual General Meeting on May 15th at 4 p.m. in Room 101 at Mount Baker Secondary School. This AGM is open to the public and if there are any questions in advance of the meeting please contact Roberta at rdmrodgers@cyberlink.ca

Hugs: My husband and I would like to extend a very big HUG to Mr. Darrell Taylor, gr.10 student counselor at Mt. Baker Sec. School. Our parents and our community are very lucky to have such a dedicated teacher working in our school system. Thank -you for all your sincere support and hard work on a daily basis... Sincerely...two grateful parents Slugs: To all of the drivers I see on a daily basis who pretend not to see pedestrians waiting at crosswalks. This is especially prevalent at Victoria and 3rd St. S where you speed through the right lane while traffic is stopped on the left. Maybe one day the RCMP will target you all before someone gets run down. Hugs: Big hugs to Rene at Denham Ford for helping us with the purchase of our new truck!!! The whole environment we experienced at Denham Ford was amazing!!! – The Browns
Slugs: To a local transmission shop who drilled a hole in the grille of our Explorer to put a zap strap to hold a block heater cord. Hugs: To the great staff of Pedal and Tap in Kimberley. What a great dinner and perfect service! Thanks for a great evening! Hugs: To the lady at Safeway that gave me her cart when I couldn’t find any change in my purse to get one. OBITUARY Felicia Ann Eaton (1960-2014) Felicia Ann Eaton passed away suddenly April 15 doing what she loved - snowmobiling in the mountains. Predeceased by her stepfather – Bud Eaton, she leaves behind her husband - Robert (Bob) Peacock, son - Ian Peacock grandchildren - Annalise and Jacob, daughter Myanne Peacock, mother - Nalane (Jerry) Johnston, father - Casimir Snowadski, sisters - Brenda Palmer, Wanda (Kevin) Mehl, Debbie(Pat) Luker, Lanna Vogel, nieces - Randi Salinas and nephews - Logan Gray and Brandon Feneide as well as many loved friends. Felicia grew up in Westport, Washington where she fondly remembered working as a charter boat deck hand. Felicia went on to attend Eastern Washington University obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. She moved to Cranbrook in 1984 where she met Bob. She developed an interest for flying, obtaining her pilots license and becoming a member of the Cranbrook flying club. She also dabbled in skydiving before discovering her love for the mountains, spending time hiking, berry picking in the summers and snowmobiling in the winters. She had a great love of animals and her cats Sambuca, Bailey and Kahlua were her joy. She proudly worked as a dental hygienist, beginning her career in Cranbrook working with Dr. Rokus and then branching out recently to start her own mobile dental hygiene business in the Robson Valley. Her love of snowmobiling brought her to Tete Jaune Cache in 2008 and started another chapter in Felicia and Bob's lives where they established a new community of friends. Felicia loved being surrounded by nature and was happy with her new life in the Rocky mountain trench. Felicia will be fondly remembered for her fun, vivacious, unique and adventurous spirit. She had a special curiosity for life and was a great talker, creating special friendships with those around her. She will be sorely missed and never forgotten. A celebration of life will be held at the St. Eugene Mission in Cranbrook, BC on Saturday April 26th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the SPCA or charitable organization of your choice.

A life lived is worth remembering. OBITUARY ULI KORB 1939-2014
Uli Korb climbed his final mountain on the evening of April 4, 2014 at the FW Green Home in Cranbrook. It was an ambitious assault that began about two years prior with a spot on his lung. In spite of that, some of his friends remember a pleasant climb-outing with him up Mause Creek Ridge to Tanglefoot in 2012, and also skiing cross country loops with him in 2013 near his home in Wycliffe, with the idyllic view west of the airport. He leaves as his memorial the many beautiful custom-built fireplaces that adorn many homes in and around Cranbrook, Fernie and Kimberley, as well as the rockwork on Cranbrook’s entry arches and on the building at 1007 Baker Street in Cranbrook. Uli was born in what was formerly East Germany in 1939 and grew up in that area. He crossed over a minefield to West Germany on 17 April 1963 when folks were routinely shot for trying this daring move. He considered this date to be his second birthday. He came to the Kootenays via Prince George in 1978 and spent many years as a stone mason in this region. In his years here he helped many local residents ascend Fisher Peak, having made some 78 ascents in total. Uli is survived by two sons, Lars and Olaf, their mother Rosmarie, daughter-in-law Amanda and two grandchildren, Zane and Ryen. Uli was a lively, imposing and unique individual with a great enthusiasm for life’s offerings. Like most of us, he had some rough edges, but his charm and wit made him fascinating and colorful, such that encounters with him were always memorable. He probably knew, and was known by, more people in the Kootenays than most and it is doubtful that he ever met a stranger. His spirit and memories of him will live on in the Kootenays, an area he truly loved.

It supports economic investment in our region
An economically dynamic region attracts investment. The more investment there is, the more our municipality and region earn in tax revenues. This, in turn, attracts other investors. Investors are like consumers — they are attracted to deals that work!
It makes a difference to the environment
Buying locally made products and doing business with companies from our region is a way to be active in protecting the environment. The less our goods are transported from far away, the less we contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
It helps support community organizations Our non-profit organizations receive a lot of financial support from business people in the region, and these donations are essential. When our local economy is in good health, our organizations are in good health.
