Residents head to Ukraine to provide medical assistance Dr. Leighton Nishuk and Warren Kreway join with Medical Mercy Canada

wo Lacombe men are getting ready to make a difference in the country of their heritage.

On May 1, Lacombians Dr. Leighton Nishuk and Warren Kreway will be leaving to spend a month in Ukraine as part of a mission trip with Medical Mercy Canada.

Nishuk has been doing mission trips to the Ukraine with Medical Mercy Canada for about five years now.

He first became exposed to the organization through a presentation done by one of his peers who was working with Medical Mercy Canada on the boarders of Burma.

As both Nishuk’s parents were born in the Ukraine, he has a strong family heritage with the country and when he heard Medical Mercy Canada did mission trips there as well, he decided to get involved.

Kreway has never been to the Ukraine before, but also has a family heritage there.

Kreway got involved with the trips through Nishuk, who he has known for many years. While Kreway has done several mission trips to Africa over the years, he is looking forward to his first trip in the Ukraine.

“I always found it very interesting,” said Kreway.

Nishuk said the basic purpose of the trip is to assess what the medical staff at the clinics and hospitals need and assist them in obtaining those resources.

He added that medical personnel are actually quite well trained and do a good job with what equipment is provided to them.

“Their medical training, both in the doctors and nurses that I’ve seen, is really quite good,” said Nishuk. “They really care for their patients. They just don’t have the supplies and they don’t have the buildings and they don’t have anywhere close to what we have here.”

As he does not have any official medical training, Kreway will be using his mechanical and carpentry skills to assist with repairing and maintaining some of the

He will also be performing some public relations work with the communities being visited.

Many of the places Nishuk and Kreway will be visiting are places Nishuk has been visiting each year since he started these trips.

Nishuk said he continues his involvement with Medical Mercy Canada year after year because he gets to see the improvements made at the clinics after each visit.

“People tell us, ‘I’ll show you what we did’, and so they show us these things, and they are excited

about it,” said Nishuk. “It’s just very satisfying.”

For Kreway, this trip holds special significance for his family. He said it serves as a way for him to learn more about his background and Ukrainian heritage.

Kreway said his father never spoke about his life or family in the Ukraine and was always very secretive about it.

Recently, Kreway discovered a baptismal certificate from an uncle that has opened some paths for him to learn more about his family and he plans to do some research while in the Ukraine.

“I actually get to research the

exact church where this baptismal certificate is from, in Bucovinie,” said Kreway. He added that one of the other doctors on the trip is from the Bucovinie area originally and has agreed to show Kreway around the area during the trip.

While Nishuk has been doing these trips for years and even this year’s trip was planned long before the Ukrainian crisis broke out, both he and Kreway said that the trip holds special significance now in light of all that has happened.

“I think it’s very important,” said Nishuk.

“People want to know that they’re still important. We still support them. I think it’s a morale booster to them to know that their friends are still with them.”

Kreway said, in light of recent events, he is a little more concerned about safety.

However, some changes have been made to the trip to most of the activity within areas of the Ukraine that are not so volatile and he is still looking forward to the opportunity.

OfďŹ cials with Lacombe Days look to expand the event

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe Days organizers are looking for ways to improve the much loved summer festival.

Lacombe Days Committee Chair Chris Ross said that the committee is looking for local community groups and clubs that may have something worth adding to the festival.

In particular, the Lacombe Days Committee is looking for activities that appeal to children and families. “We would like to try and get more things for the children and youth if possible because that is an age bracket we would like to further enhance,� said Ross.

This move to enhance Lacombe Days for children and families comes after a study completed through a provincial grant program Lacombe Regional Tourism received.

Marie PĂŠron, executive director of Lacombe Regional Tourism, said that the study was done as part of a provincial-wide program designed to teach communities how to grow festivals in order for

them to better serve the community in terms of event participation, economic development and tourism growth.

PĂŠron said the results of the study suggested that Lacombe Days would be best served by catering more to the younger participants in the festival.

She said this is because most of the people who already participate in the festival are children, teens or young families.

As a result of the study, a Tourism Event Growth Plan for Lacombe Days has been created and was unveiled at an event last Wednesday.

PĂŠron said while the Lacombe Days committee has been proactive in efforts to enhance the festival already, more dramatic changes will be seen in years to come. “The growth plan is aiming for a more remarkable change next year and thereon,â€? said PĂŠron. “But if there is something that we can start adding this year that works in that direction that would be great.â€?

In order for any improvements at all to be made, the committee will need volunteers to do them.

Ross pointed to Lacombe’s

hosting of this year’s Boston Pizza Cup as a superb example of how volunteers can make an event successful. “It was a huge community event,� said Ross. “It really contributed to putting Lacombe on the map.�

Ross went on to say he is looking at the volunteer effort behind the hugely successful Boston Pizza Cup as a model for Lacombe Days.

He said the Lacombe Days Committee is also looking at ways to allow volunteer groups to make their contributions to the festival as a way to fundraise as well, as was done for the BP Cup. “Your event is only as good as your volunteers,� said Ross.

In addition to seeking out volunteer groups to add to the festival, Ross said volunteers are also needed to join the committee. He said anyone interested in actively promoting Lacombe and growing Lacombe Days should consider getting involved.

Blackfalds residents frustrated by new bylaw

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express At a meeting of council this week, the Town of Blackfalds passed its new solid waste management bylaw by the narrow margin of one vote. Director of Infrastructure Preston Weran said the bylaw allows for the Town to adapt to the changing methods of garbage and recycling collection in Alberta.

Under the new bylaw, waste will be collected through automatic collection bins instead of being manually collected as it has been previously. Weran added similar systems have been implemented in other municipalities like Calgary, Medicine Hat, Didsbury and Olds and there are also plans to implement such a system in Red Deer.

The Town of Blackfalds’ 2014 budget process included the addition of new resi-

dential waste and recycling carts to be used with the new system. Designed for automated pickup, the new carts are much larger than those already being used.

However, residents had misgivings about the system. At a public hearing held during the same meeting, several voiced their frustrations.

Matt Wear was upset the bins for the program had already been purchased prior to the bylaw being passed and it seemed the Town was “Putting the cart before the horse.”

Wear said he did not think it fair the residents of Blackfalds were being stuck with an additional fee for the new bins that no one had really asked for.

Even after administration clarified that the additional fee was $1.85 per month and not $3 per month as previously believed, Wear said it was the

principal, not the amount that was upsetting.

Shane Hanson also disagreed with the fee.

He said if residents were going to be forced into this new program, they should at least be able to buy the bins outright. Hanson went on to say the new system which charges a fee allows for abuse by those who are going to be irresponsible with their bins and punishes those who are responsible. “Irresponsible people are still going to cost the responsible people money.”

Erin Knight had concerns about back alley pickup in situations where the bins cannot always be placed on a level surface away from obstructions.

She said while she is not against the program, she was not for it either and there were more logistical concerns that needed to be worked out.

After discussion with ad-

ministration and the residents in attendance, Councillor Will Taylor spoke saying that while he identified with the concerns of residents, this change was

still necessary.

“It’s certainly not the will to steamroll anybody,” said Taylor. “This has actually been a process for years. If you follow other

municipalities, this is kind of the way of the future.”

OPINION Celebrating one year Wow. One year.

It sounds cliché, but it really doesn’t feel like it has already been a year since the first edition of the Lacombe Express was published. Nonetheless, birthdays are worth celebrating, and the first year in operation for any business is a milestone worth marking.

In some ways little has changed since the first edition hit the streets of Lacombe, Blackfalds and area. This time last year when we only had one issue under our belt, things were much the same. It was spring, but the threat of snow was still looming and everyone was wondering when the weather would catch up with the calendar and start warming up.

About the same time, Council Chambers was being flooded by concerned individuals over the Solid Waste Roadmap. It was the first big story we covered and was instrumental in developing our relationship with the community.

We received our first letters to the editor regarding this topic and got a pulse of the community, learning what really mattered to the people of Lacombe and how much Lacombians cared about decisions affecting their community.

After the Solid Waste Roadmap issue had been resolved, Lacombe headed right into the next big newsmaker to happen in the last year, the 2013 municipal election. Through our coverage of the close, fierce, but fair race and campaigns, the Lacombe Express continued to solidify its place within Lacombe and strengthen its relationship with the community.

Throughout the last year, we have also had the pleasure of covering the infancy (while still in its own infancy) of Blackfalds’ newest facility and biggest newsmaker of late, the Abbey Centre. We have enjoyed covering the final steps of construction for the Abbey Centre and look

forward to bringing you the latest about this new attraction now that the public is able to enjoy it.

With the community’s support, we have grown over the past year. We look forward to growing more and continuing to offer Lacombe, Blackfalds and area

the latest in local news and community events.

And that is something you can help with. We are always looking for ways to improve and expand our product, and we encourage our readers to continue submitting letters, story ideas, and photos to us.

We hope that this is only the first of many birthdays to come for the Lacombe Express. We would also like to thank the community, all of our readers and our advertisers for making our first year in business a successful one. We look forward to many more.

Laws discouraging youth voting are never fair Last week, we ran an editorial detailing the unnecessary changes that Bill C-23, the so-called Fair Elections Act, would make to elections in Canada. Also last week, a conservative majority Senate committee unanimously recommended nine major changes to the bill.

These issues are just the tip of the iceberg that is Bill C-23. There are many more problems to the Fair Elections Act lurking beneath the water than what is covered in either last week’s editorial or the Senate committee report. In particular, there is one major issue that the media has been thus far been silent about – the Student Vote program.

Student Vote is a program that runs during election years that helps to engage students not yet eligible to vote (as in underage students) in politics and democracy by running a mock vote parallel to the federal election as it happens.

During the previous federal election, 563,000 elementary and high school students cast mock ballots to elect a Conservative minority government with the NDP as the

VOSSEN Official Opposition (interestingly, only slightly different than the results from the real election).

Last week, I learned from my mother, a teacher, that the Fair Elections act would amend Section 18 of the current elections act and put a gag order on the Chief Electoral Officer, limiting the topics on what he can speak to publicly and effectively ending the Student vote program.

To me, this is a huge deal and I can’t understand why I have not heard more about it. Were my mother not a teacher, I may not have heard about it at all.

Many is the day that I wish I had begun following politics at a younger age and better informed myself.

Unfortunately, my mother was not aware of the program when

she was teaching me in high school and I did not have the opportunity to partake, but believe me, I would have.

Even before graduating high school, I quickly learned through my parents the importance of voting, but still did not know much about it. I even abstained from voting in the provincial election that took place in Saskatchewan mere months after I moved away from my home province to begin my post-secondary studies because I did not think I was able to vote as a Saskatchewan resident studying in Alberta. I was unaware of the existence of remote polling stations for voters in situations like mine.

Afterwards, I vowed to vote in every election I was eligible for, and thus far I have. I have voiced my opinion with a ballot in elections for every level from student’s associations to the federal government.

Still, it wasn’t until recently that I would call myself well-informed when it comes to the political sphere and I can never help but think I would be more knowledgeable had I learned more about the

political process before I could even vote.

Therefore, I feel any program that encourages youth to vote and gets them interested with politics at a younger age is extremely beneficial.

Thus, I fully support the Student Vote program and cannot support any legislation that hinders it.

The young people of Canada are our future and they will be making decisions about the future of our country through the democratic process and voting. We best teach them how.

Taylor Gunn, president and CEO of CIVIX Canada, the organization that runs the Student Vote program, said the position of CIVIX is that the impact of the Fair Elections Act on Student Vote is an accidental oversight, because why would the government wish to purposely stop youth from learning about their democracy?

Histories of Lacombe’s photographers Fortunate indeed are those communities with pioneer photographers who recorded and preserved pictures of historic events in their history.

Lacombe was one such community.

First was Mark Hannah in the pre-1900 era. He, in common with many in his profession, photographed everything and everyone with one lamentable exception.

They left no pictures of themselves apart from occasions when they happened to be part of a group.

Such was the case for Hannah.

He was a member of Lacombe’s hockey team, a forward to be precise, and he appears in the two extant portraits of the team.

The last photograph attributed to Hannah was of the G.G. Mobley family in 1903, a photograph that is not among those in the Michener House archives but was recorded in the history of the Mobley family which was compiled by Doug Mobley.

Hannah sold his business to John Scales, the man who was truly the pioneer photographer of Lacombe.

The images that he left us provide the earliest pictorial records of Lacombe and the surrounding communities of Bentley, Blackfalds and Lamerton, the latter the precursor to Mirror.

FREDEEN In those early days of photography there was no such convenience as roll film. That would not be invented until 1889 (by George Eastman).

Images were captured on glass plates coated (one side) with a dried emulsion, using cameras that were both bulky and heavy.

The glass plates came in several sizes with 4x5 and 5x7 (inches that is) being the popular sizes, but larger plates were also available for cameras of appropriate size.

This era preceded the automobile so Scales and his contemporaries would have transported equipment and boxes of glass plates (the latter constructed to minimize breakage of the fragile contents) to and from location over prairie trails by buggy or saddlebag.

Scales sold his business to Ben Cameron in 1910 and moved to Kamloops.

Here he once again pioneered the art of photography and left a legacy of remarkable historical

photographs. Cameron has been widely acclaimed as the pioneer photographer of Central Alberta and his name does appear on many images captured during the pioneer era.

However, all images of Lacombe scenes or of people that predate 1910, although they may bear the name Cameron or the caption “taken in the studio of Ben Cameron” were in fact taken by Scales.

The studio and images did not become Cameron property until 1910 and Styles was the true pioneer photographer for events prior to this year. Glass plate photography had disappeared altogether by the mid-1920s.

Harvey and Del MacIntyre purchased the Cameron studio in the late 1940s and Harvey’s photographic skill is evident in the pages of ‘Lacombe the First Century’.

He provided original photographs for this particular history, restored the historic pictures which were donated by individuals, and developed negatives found on the decades-old glass plates that remained in the studio. When he left

the studio to teach at the Lacombe Composite High School he donated and personally delivered the entire collection of glass plates to the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary.

The weight of the consignment taxed his station wagon to its very limits. At Glenbow the photographs can be accessed as the Ben Cameron collection.

What Harvey did not know was that the walls of the old studio held a treasure trove of glass plate negatives.

These did not come to light until the building was being renovated for use as a radio and television repair shop.

The renovation crew, unaware of the treasure exposed between the studs of the wall, was using shovels to transfer glass shards – and a few intact plates -to the garbage barrel at the alley when Bill Marquhart chanced on the scene.

He managed to salvage a few of the larger pieces, some of harvest scenes showing threshing machines and bundle crews in the full glory of harvest during the era of steam power.

Reminder

Recreational Vehicles Enforcement Services would like to remind residents that no person shall park any recreational vehicles (motor homes, holiday trailers, campers, tent trailers or any buses or trucks converted for use as recreation vehicles) upon any highway or street within the City of Lacombe unless the trailer is attached to a vehicle.

A recreational vehicle may not be permitted to park on a street if a Peace Officer determines that the vehicle is a traffic or public safety hazard. Recreational vehicles and trailers parked on a property must be fully contained within the property. No portion of a recreational vehicle or trailer is permitted to protrude into a street, laneway or sidewalk.

As well, pursuant to City of Lacombe Traffic Bylaw #223 and the Provincial Traffic Safety Act, all vehicles must be moved every 72 hours.

2014 Municipal Census The City of Lacombe is conducting a Municipal Census this year. For the first time, residents will have the option of completing the Census questionnaire online. Every household should have received a letter containing information and a unique PIN on how to complete their census online at www.lacombe.ca/census. The census will be available online till 8pm on June 30, 2014.

Lacombe’s Downtown Storefront Enhancement Program now available With City Council’s approval in principle of Bylaw 300.83 – a bylaw to amend Section 14 of the City of Lacombe’s Land Use Bylaw 300 by replacing the Residential Architectural Theme and Main Street Historic Area Overlays with the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan Architectural Guidelines (DARP) and Heritage District Area Overlays, work can now move forward on the Downtown Storefront Enhancement Program.

“The program provides an incentive for downtown businesses to invest in façade renovations and some interior upgrades,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “The improvements are intended to complement initiatives recommended within the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan.”

Successful projects must conform to the Program Design Standards, comply with municipal development regulations, and strive to make visible improvements to the appearance, design and function of the business.

“We want to encourage business owners to improve the appearance of their businesses by utilizing grant funds and low interest loans, to a maximum of $10,000.00,” said Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe. “There is a maximum of $2000 grant and a maximum of $8,000 loan available per applicant.”

The Downtown Storefront Enhancement Program works with other revitalization initiatives to promote the viability of retail and commercial businesses. It will help building owners to attract and retain tenants; make the downtown area more inviting and interesting as places to work and shop; and, it will help build community and civic pride among the business community and citizens of Lacombe.

Any business within the defined boundaries of the Old Town Main Street District may apply. The applicant must be either the property owner or a designated person who has the written authority from the owner to submit the application.

Water Meter Upgrade Program In 2014, the City of Lacombe will embark on year one of a four year project to change out aging manual read water meters within the city. The municipality’s current meter reading system is labour intensive, requiring staff to visually read 4300 water meters six times per year.

All interested parties must submit their RFP documents and confirm City Hall’s receipt of the RFP documents no later than 1:30 pm local time on May 14, 2014.

Benefits of the new system include:

If these areas are completed ahead of schedule then Neptune will move into the following areas next:

• Automatic read system means ‘estimated’ bi-monthly bills can be eliminated and accurate monthly billing can be introduced.

• Country Ridge

• The meter and the radio-read technology are built into the water meter.

• The Neptune meter is easy to install and in most cases will fit into the same space as the old meter.

• The meters also incorporate an alarm system that ‘flags’ the meter if the following conditions have been present in the past 90 days – no water flow, reverse water flow, water leak detection and water meter tampering.

The City has contracted Neptune Technology Group to install the new meters. Installations will commence on April 28, 2014, and will be carried out on an area by area basis. The initial areas the contractor will focus on are: • Hearthstone • Elizabeth Park • English Estates • Regency

• The Lakes • Heritage As Neptune installers move into an area they will be mailing an information kit to each address. This will be the resident’s cue to call for an appointment. The information kit explains all you need to know about scheduling your appointment and other details of the program. When you receive the kit, you will have two weeks to schedule an appointment. Please DO NOT CALL until you receive this kit. If you are a tenant, please contact the building owner once you receive the information kit.

The installers will work to make the process quick and convenient. Meter installation appointments can be made to fit your schedule. The installation usually takes about one hour and the installer cleans up afterwards.

Utilizing a water meter replacement or change-out program is an important process to any municipal waterworks system. Integrating better technology to improve customer service, that is less intrusive to customers, can help save the whole community money. New pedestrian crossing to enhance safety at Terrace Ridge School Work has begun on the installation of new pedestrianactivated crossing lights at Terrace Ridge School (C + E Trail/Telford Crescent intersection) in response to citizen concerns regarding the safety of children attending the school, and to include a trail connection from the existing trail system to the crosswalk. This interconnectedness will allow for greater walkability within the neighbourhood, and allows families and children to cross the road more safely. He said he has stayed involved with kickboxing for two decades because the sport offered him health, both physical and mental, through fun, ďŹ tness and stress relief. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kickboxing was the sport that had everything for me,â&#x20AC;? said JuĂĄrez. He added that kickboxing has given him a way to connect with people and make friends wherever he has lived. JuĂĄrez even met his wife in kickboxing class.

CĂĄdiz is built on a peninsula and is almost entirely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

As such, JuĂĄrez spent a lot of time at the beach growing up and in his teens, looking good at the beach was very important.

As a way to stay ďŹ t and look good on the beach, JuĂĄrez decided to give kickboxing a try after meeting some high school friends who were involved in the sport. JuĂĄrez added that he already had an interest in martial arts but never had the opportunity to try any.

He said he had previous experience playing team sports like handball and soccer, but was never very athletic as a child. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All my friends were much better than me at sports.â&#x20AC;?

However, that changed with kickboxing.

JuĂĄrez said it took him awhile to improve, but improve he did. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kickboxing took a lot of effort,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had class two times a week and I would go three times a week to work out by myself.

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have ďŹ&#x201A;exibility, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have coordination, it took me awhile to get better.â&#x20AC;?

JuĂĄrez went on to say that by the time he had earned his black belt and was skilled enough to be competitive at tournaments, kickboxing had become a part of his life.

He added that he continued training because he had invested so much time developing his rank and skill that he did not want to lose them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the same time, I realized that it was a sport I could do pretty much for the rest of my life,â&#x20AC;? said JuĂĄrez. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because you can adapt it. When you get older, maybe you have some injuries in your knees, you can box more. If I have an injury to my elbow, I

I have met people that were 60, 65 and were doing kickboxing. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very ďŹ&#x201A;exible sport. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also very complete because you use everything. You have to have cardio, you have to have strength, coordination, ďŹ&#x201A;exibility and you have to use your brain. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just about the strongest or the ďŹ ttest.â&#x20AC;?

A third-degree black belt in kickboxing, JuĂĄrez has coached kick boxers at the national level. He said that his desire to coach at higher levels is actually what inspired him to earn his belts.

As a ďŹ rst-degree black belt, Juarez was able to coach at a regional level, as a second-degree he was able to coach at what would equate to a provincial level.

He added that he was not able to take the courses necessary for coaching at higher levels until he had the prerequisite belt.

Lately, he has slowed his advancement through the ranks. He said his last belt test was in 2003 and had he continued testing he would likely be ranked higher by now.

While his martial arts background is mostly in kickboxing, JuĂĄrez has dabbled

in other martial arts as well.

He has studied Taekwondo, karate, Muay Thai, English boxing and kung fu in several different locales to supplement his kickboxing.

JuĂĄrez added that he has been involved in martial arts consistently since ďŹ rst getting involved with them 20 years ago.

While the Generals had trouble adjusting to the small size of the Dundas rink, the Real McCoys used it to their advantage well.

“We give them credit, they knew how to play that barn,” said Tobler. He added that in addition to the home team advantage, Dundas had also put together a very strong team.

“It was their year,” said Tobler. “They

proved that they were the best that senior hockey had to offer this year. So, you know, we have to give them credit. Yeah, it’s disappointing, but you have to give credit where it’s due.”

As for what the Gens will accomplish next season, Tobler said it is far too early to have discussions about returning players or what the team will look like. However, he did say that he expects to have a good core group of players returning. news@lacombeexpress.com

Dinos will return for football camps MEGlobal Athletic Park will again play host to the University of Calgary Dinos Football who will again put on two minor football development camps this June.

This is the fourth year the Dinos are visiting Lacombe to provide these camps for Central Alberta minor and high school football.

The High School Camp and the Minor Football Camp (Bantam and PeeWee) will run simultaneously for three days, June 6th – 8th.

There will also be a twoday introduction to football for younger Atom players.

U of C Dinos Football Camp provides regional minor football players the chance to develop their skills under the direct tutelage of Dinos’ coaches and players.

The young players will experience a university program as the comprehensive camp that includes a complete football program with both on and off-field development, non-football related activities, a meal program, and even par-

ent information sessions regarding development of university acceptance strategies, etc.

Camp enrolment will be limited to ensure effective coach to player ratios.

University of Calgary Dinos Head Coach Blake Nill is again looking forward to the camps.

“We continue to partner with Lacombe to promote and foster the development of football players in Central Alberta,” said Nill.

“This province produces some of the best players in the country, and we’re honoured to be a part of the football community in Alberta. And we are excited to be back at MEGlobal Athletic Park, it’s an outstanding facility, and this will continue to be a highend camp. This is also a great scouting opportunity for the Dinos’ program.

“We hope to see as many Central Alberta minor and high school football players show off their talents.”

The L.A.P.A. will work with their partner, Lacombe Minor Football to promote the camps.

The location of our facility, the AstroTurf, fieldhouse and lights allows us to draw groups from all over Alberta. It is beneficial for our community and local businesses.”

ARTS & LEISURE The Parkland Men’s Choir marks 25 years A special celebration concert runs this Saturday at Woody Nook Church

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express A Central Alberta singing group will soon be marking 25 years of making music at a special celebration on April 26.

The Parkland Men’s Choir is hosting the anniversary party at Woody Nook Church west of Blackfalds starting at 7 p.m.

Several special guests will be featured including Potter’s Clay, Marla Torgerson and saxophone player Charles Stolte.

A free will offering will be taken as well. There is no charge to attend.

The Choir is a volunteer group of Christian men from Central Alberta who love to share their faith and love for God through the medium of music.

Allan Stolte, a member of the group since the very beginning, said the celebration is a way to mark 25 years of sharing their music as well as encouraging newcomers to sign up. Another highlight will be having all the former members in attendance join the current choir for a special number during the course of the evening.

“We enjoy doing upbeat Christian music like southern gospel,” he added. “The theme of the evening is really about celebrating God’s goodness to us. We want people’s hearts to be singing as they drive home.”

Twenty-five years ago, Frank Tolsma had the vision to start up the choir. It all began in early 1989 with about 24 men, who were mostly from the Woody Nook Christian Reformed Church.

The pianist was Adolf Opdendries from Red Deer.

In the spring of 1989 the Choir was invited to join other Alberta men’s choirs in Calgary to sing a given set of songs, which they all performed in different ways. At that concert, the Parkland Choir was very well-received, which

The directors and pianists have changed over the years. The choir started under the direction of Tolsma followed by Carolyn Neufeld, Dale Dickau, and it is currently being directed by Larry Johnson.

The pianists have also changed over the years starting with Op-

dendries, Dawn Tuininga, Ruth Hafso, Neufeld, Sharon Dickau, Bev McIvar, John Stoutley, Dale Dickau, Joan Tancock-Polino and presently Brenda Klosse.

The men have shared their music in a number of locations as well, from the Bowden Penitentiary, the Youth Offender Center in Edmonton and several churches in Edmonton, Calgary, Bow Island, High River, Brooks, Lethbridge and Wetaskiwin to events and churches in Caroline, Clive,

Ponoka, Rimbey, Bentley, many places in Red Deer and Lacombe, Stettler, Three Hills and Rocky Mountain House among others.

They were also honoured to sing at the Winspear Center in Edmonton and at the Red Deer hospital where we sang for Tolsma, who was a patient there.

“I absolutely love it,” explains Allan. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a good practice or a bad one, the music just speaks to the heart. It’s the same with a lot of

A scientific way to break free from the urge to smoke How can the war in Vietnam now be saving lives?

During the Vietnam conflict U.S. soldiers were given free cheap cigarettes, but they were harsh to smoke. To decrease the harshness, soldiers applied glycerine gel to one end of the cigarette which trapped harmful tar. This has pioneered a life-saving idea called ‘NicoBloc’.

If tobacco was introduced to North Americans today, health authorities would ban it as a hazardous substance. Now we know it contains tar, nicotine and 4,000 chemicals of which 40 are known to be carcinogenic to humans.

So why do people continue to smoke and injure their health?

JONES The problem is that cigarette smoking readily becomes a habit. But it doesn’t take much time before a habit becomes an addiction delivering a lethal punch. Nicotine, like heroin, easily penetrates the blood-brain barrier altering the chemistry of the brain. Moreover, since nicotine is even more addictive than cocaine or heroin, it’s easy to get hooked.

So what makes NicoBloc different from other anti-smoking medication?

First, it’s a natural remedy, not a drug, with no active ingredients added to the smoke or inhaled.

Cooking with or without adding water I am always preaching to be innovative while cooking and add ingredients other than water such as wine, broth, beer, juice, etc. because they have more flavour. Although most can, some recipes cannot adapt to this type of modification.

The first thing to examine is the amount of water the recipe suggests. If the amount is of minuscule proportion, then replacing the water shouldn’t be a concern.

The choice of distinctive liquid would accent the existing flavours without risk of overpowering of the dish.

If the recipe states a large quantity of water, then one must examine what the other ingredients are and how much flavour they will impart on their own.

This is not as complicated as it may sound. The most effective way to determine if a recipe can accept any variation is to make it the way it is written first and then listen to your taste buds.

Maybe just replacing a portion of the water would be the solution or leaving the recipe in its original state is just fine.

COOKING cooked in only water. I know that may seem quite obvious, so let me give you some ideas with the following liquids.

Red wine or dark beer are great additions to red meat and tomato dishes, such as pasta sauce, gravies, chili, stir-fries, soups, stews, etc. A general rule of thumb is the stronger the flavours in a certain dish, then the more robust wine/beer it can handle as an ingredient. White wine is better suited to cream sauces, poultry gravies, lighter soups and seafood.

Fruit juices can also be used in savoury dishes (savoury is the opposite of sweet).

Your cookbooks may turn out looking like high-school textbooks, but for the sake of better eating - it is worth it.

Exploring various types of symmetry in home decor As humans we are trained from birth to love symmetry.

We are a beautiful creation of symmetry and the balance we see in ourselves is the jumping off point to our first forays into design. Most of us employ two night stands, a pair of lamps and matching end tables in our living rooms. Even those of us who like furniture slightly askew crave symmetry in all of its forms.

Symmetrical balance – this is the most commonly used design element as it is safe and predictable. Items such as furniture and accessories are placed in exact pairs.

Mirror images of each item will generally divide up a room. If you have one lamp, you use the identical lamp on the other side. Furniture is placed straight back following the lines of the room and generally the focal point of the room is directly in the middle of one wall.

Asymmetrical balance – here we find a

MECKLER trendier and less formal method of arranging rooms. If you have a corner fireplace or corner feature windows, this is the perfect room to set up a room with asymmetrical balance. This is still very pleasing to the eye but much less safe and it takes a bit of a creative mind to arrange asymmetrical balance without it looking like total chaos.

You can use odd or mismatched items but can still draw them together using coordinating fabrics or patterns. Colour can also pull an asymmetrical plan together. You don’t have to have a matched set of end tables if the wood tones are complimentary and you can have a mismatched set of

lamps if the shade fabric is similar.

Radial balance – this is commonly used to enhance the function of a room. A room with a dominant fireplace or a media room are very good examples of a room with radial balance. Consider how everything will radiate from the kitchen island in your home, like the spokes of a wheel which spread out from the center hub. Rooms are often designed with radial balance to accommodate the function or the most important feature in a room. This is a natural and friendly way to design a room and promotes conversation and family connection, like the common dining room or kitchen table which is the simplest and most common example of radial balance.

The rule of any design scheme is simple, have items, colours and design elements make sense. If you use it in one part of the room, balance that in the other part of the room. Whether you put it ex-

actly opposite, off to the side or in a circular pattern you are using balance in your design theme which will create a visually pleasing and relaxing atmosphere in your home.

You will know your personal preference in what type of balance works best for you.

Those who are needing predictability will go for symmetry while those who are more carefree and creative will gravitate towards the asymmetrical style. The friendly, family types will usually opt for radial balance to keep everyone inside their protective circle.

Whatever style you decide on, it will perfectly reflect your personality and spirit without you even giving it conscious thought. These kinds of things in design usually just naturally happen without us even trying!
