Ed Marshall grows garlic and other vegetables in his backyard garden in Port Alberni.

But above eye level, he is cultivating another integral part of the growing cycle: mason bees.

Marshall started out with 10 cocoons a few years ago, more out of curiosity and the desire to give nature a helping hand than anything.

“I’ve got thousands now,” he says.

Marshall’s interest in mason bees increased a few years ago, when he began reading more and more about the honey bee crisis—they are dying off by the millions due to Colony Collapse Disorder.

In the past three years, Marshall hasn’t seen one honey bee in his backyard garden. “I’ve seen bumblebees, mason bees and summer bees, but no honey bees,” he said.

Mason bees are smaller than some other bees, and they don’t sting. “Some people mistake them for flies,” he said.

Although honey bees have had a lot of press in the past few years because they are mysteriously dying off, they are not the only bees that pollinate flowers and plants. In the publication Farming for Bees, the author notes bees native to their respective regions are as effective—if not more— than honey bees in pollinating flowers and crops.

For instance, 250 female orchard mason bees can pollinate an acre of apples—a task that would take up to two honey bee hives, or nearly 20,000 foragers. In Nova Scotia, there are 67 species of native bees that pollinate blueberry bushes.

In Port Alberni, the mason bees will last until the beginning of June; then they give way to summer bees, Marshall said.

“These guys are already native to this part of the country,” Marshall said.

– Ed Marshall after themselves anyway and they’ve always been here,” he explained.

He said the bees favour sunlight, so many of the bee houses he has up at his home are placed for maximum sun exposure. He says securing them up near the eaves is ideal.

The egg-laying season is relatively short: mason bees began hatching in mid-April and they will be finished by early June. The females lay eggs inside the tubes of a mason bee house, packing mud in between the eggs until the tubes are full.

Marshall has his own system for cultivating his mason bees. He lines his houses with homemade parchment paper tubes and in October and November he removes the tubes, takes out the cocoons, washes and separates them (male cocoons are smaller) then

stores them in small wooden boxes he buys at the dollar store. “I like to separate them so I know what’s what,” he said.

“I know for sure my bees are clean.”

Next March, Marshall can be found at the Farmer’s Market and at Arrowvale Farm Market.

A new service for seniors is launching the Alberni Valley this week.

Better at Home is a program to help seniors continue to live independently in their own homes by providing access to non-medical support services coordinated and delivered locally. The Port Alberni Better at Home program will concentrate primarily on friendly visits, transportation to appointments and a seniors’ information and referral service, program coordinator Barb Stevenson said.

“We’re going to BARB start with the two STEVENSON most in-demand services.”

The program is being assembled with a government grant and will work in partnership with INEO Employment Services for volunteer coordination.

Better at Home differs from home support services in several ways, the most important being there are no medical or personal hygiene services.

“The friendly visitor is a friend, not hired help,” Stevenson explained. “So they will be doing things friends would do.”

Seniors and volunteers will be interviewed and paired up according to need. Volunteers will have to submit to a criminal record check.

“We’re hoping to support the independence of seniors,” Stevenson said.

School District 70 trustees are under fire for not providing enough financial information to the public in advance of the public budget discussion in May. Parents raised the concern with trustees at their meeting on April 22.

Parent Tricia McKee Marriot said that the meeting was confusing because she was under the impression the budget would be discussed but it wasn’t.

Earlier, she’s expressed concerns about how dollars are divided up to community schools, Bamfield’s in particular, and about potential cuts to education assistants.

As well, if the draft budget isn’t presented to the public until May 13 and a final budget is adopted on May 27, then that doesn’t leave enough time for people to study it thoroughly and ask informed questions.

People should be supplied with a draft budget with “ball park” figures, audience member Olga Kanigan said.

Looking at it for the first time on May 13 “Isn’t enough time for us people who aren’t accountants,” she said.

SDS70 chair Larry Ransom replied that budget input is to be provided through the petitions/delegations portion of the agenda.

The public can also continue to provide budget input via email, which continues to amass and be considered, he said.

draft budget drawn up and available to the public on May 9.

Secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham he’d planned to use his weekends including that one to finalize the budget and couldn’t promise that it would be done by then.

Input is input, trustee John Bennie said. “You said you don’t want the money to be split equally between the community schools and that you want know cuts to education assistants,” Bennie said. “Whether you realize it or not you just provided input.”

The move is part of teacher job action which in the initial phase will see them still in classrooms but not performing administrative duties.

According to Zydyk, teachers will not supervise students outside of the classroom, and this includes supervision before and after school as well as during recess.

Pain at pumps a way of life Inconvenient truths for Earth Day The angst at the pump last week was predictable.

Anytime somebody informs you the cost of living is going up by a few hundred dollars, or more, during the next year, the groans are inevitable.

Unfortunately, what also seems inevitable is the resignation.

Gas price hikes aren’t new, or unusual. It wasn’t that long ago that prices were under a dollar per litre, and at least half the people reading this are going to remember filling up when that rate was less than 30 cents a litre.

Every time those rates jumped, people greeted the jump with the same type of response we heard last Thursday.

And every time, by and large, people continued to do what they’ve always done — filled up their cars and headed out to the highway.

The simple fact of the situation is all of us are slaves to the gas pump. Try as we might to avoid it, our society is built around the automobile and has been for at least 60 years.

Where we live, where we work, where we learn, where we eat and where we play are often impractical and sometimes impossible to link without the aid of a gas-powered vehicle.

Most of us don’t think we can do anything about it; it doesn’t occur to some of us why we should even try. But we need to start directing our society away from its reliance on gas.

It’s easy for some to dismiss the climate change crowd as intellectual zealots, and the 100-mile diet people as trendy hipsters, but the fact remains: we can’t continue down the path.

Never mind the environmental issues, we simply will not be able to afford it financially.

The future is coming and our lives are going to be different. Start embracing change before change buries us all.

ICTORIA – Earth Day 2014 will likely go down in B.C. history as less exciting than last year’s event.

That was the day when, in the heat of the election campaign, NDP leader Adrian Dix announced in Kamloops that he doesn’t support the expansion of the Trans Mountain oil pipeline to its Burnaby terminal, because Vancouver shouldn’t become a “major oil port.”

As of this Earth Day, it has been an oil port for exactly a century, since Imperial Oil began work on B.C.’s first refinery in 1914, in what is now Port Moody. There were no pipelines then, so crude was moved by rail or tanker.

For 60 years, Trans Mountain has supplied the Chevron refinery in Burnaby that is southern B.C.’s last source of fuel.

Some of the Alberta

crude is piped south to be refined into fuels and some of that product is barged back up to B.C. to keep our traffic moving.

Today the proposal to expand and upgrade that pipeline, and to build new oil and natural gas pipelines across the north, dominate B.C.’s political scene.

In keeping with the educational aspect of Earth Day, here are some things you may not know about energy and the environment.

• A recent National Geographic report summarizes the main sources of oil in the oceans around North America. Media coverage focuses on tanker and pipeline spills, but they only account for eight per cent of the total.

Fully 60 per cent of the oil load in North American waters is from natural seeps, where oil leaks from seafloor rock. One of the world’s largest is off

Santa Barbara, California, where 20 to 25 tons flows out each day. It’s mostly consumed by oil-eating bacteria that have adapted and proliferated.

The next biggest source is leakage from cars and trucks, which collects on pavement and is flushed to sea when it rains.

• Earth Day is now preceded

by Earth Hour, during which we are encouraged to turn out our lights to join a world-wide gesture of conservation.

Many people use the occasion for a candlelight dinner.

Given that B.C.’s power is nearly all from renewable hydroelectric sources, and that the paraffin used to make candles is derived from petroleum or coal, this feel-good ritual produces an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

expansion of the symbolic effort designed to “raise awareness.” This is a popular notion in the climate change industry, which to date consists mostly of government officials and activists flying around the world to conferences in exotic locations to sign agreements that lead to, well, not much so far.

• Unlike Earth Hour, B.C.’s carbon tax on fuels actually appears to be helping to reduce emissions.

An update to provincial data is due this year, but what we have shows a 5.7 per cent decrease in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases between 2007 and 2011.

Environment ministers have conceded that some of this is due to the recession that struck in 2008-2009. But since the economy has recovered and begun to grow again, emissions have continued to decline.

• There are simple things anyone can do, without gimmicks or government programs.

Since moving to Port Alberni last fall, I have been constantly astounded by the bickering and complaining I read about in the local papers. Seems everyone has an axe to grind and wants someone else to fix it.

Heads up, folks: if you can’t suggest a solution, stop griping and go find one.

This is a wonderful, friendly little city where you still have neighbours, your kids can play outdoors safely and people smile at each other on the street. Count your blessings.

For the past week I’ve been reading the griping about graffiti.

Vaccination not option for some To the Editor,

Long thought by most people to belong to the bad old days of polio and smallpox, measles is making a resurgence in Canada due to complacency in the public about vaccinations. Almost daily we hear of new outbreaks.

If the people of the

world knew about this, I have no doubt they would slap us upside the head and ask us what our problem is. Because unlike us, many millions have no access to vaccines for themselves or their children, and live in constant fear of diseases that could easily be prevented.

Diseases we never have to think about.

In late May, Prime Minister Harper will be hosting a Child and Maternal Health summit, and I hope he takes this opportunity to boost GAVI funding for vaccinations.

For even if many of us turn our backs on vaccines, people around the world will gladly accept them.

Shipping bitumen over water bad idea DAVID BLACK Guest view

My name is David Black. I am the majority owner of Black Press, the company that owns this newspaper. This is the first of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the BC environment in our lifetime.

I am a reasonably sensible and conservative businessman, not an alarmist. All of the information in this column can be confirmed from public sources.

The oil industry wants to export Alberta bitumen to Asia via tankers. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen.

A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years.

Bitumen, even if it is diluted, does not float in sea water if there

is sediment present.

This has been proven many times, most recently in a thorough Environment Canada study published on Nov. 30, 2013.

Page 51 of the study provides graphic evidence of sunken bitumen.

Given that there is an abundance of sediment along the B.C. coast, the bitumen will sink rapidly and there will be little chance of recovering any of it if there is a spill.

By Northern Gateway’s own admission the likelihood of a bitumen spill at sea is more than 10 per cent over the next 50 years.

Others say that it is much higher.

We are in agreement with the position taken by the Coastal First Nations that even the slightest risk of a spill of bitumen at sea is unacceptable.

The grounding of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989 is often held up as an example of how bad an oil spill at sea can be, however, a spill of bitumen at sea would be much worse.

And, for the last three years, the residents/tenants of Abbeyfield House and Heritage Place have joined hands together to organize the event in order to express their gratitude to the hundreds of volunteers who, year after year, contribute to make their lives more meaningful and enjoyable.

“We couldn’t function without you,” said Marlene Dietrich in her address at the event. “We have volunteers in many areas of our daily life, from school students, entertainers, to board members, etc. How can we ever thank you!”

Dietrich, a wellknown volunteer in Port Alberni, has been an active member of the Heritage Place and Abbeyfield boards since their beginnings.

And for the past eight years she has been at the helm as president of the Abbeyfield board.

Another speaker was president Sylvia Springer. She brought greetings to the volunteers on behalf of the Heritage Place board of directors.

Manufacturers provide sizzle in Big Apple

There was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show.

It seems the Big Four shot their lightning bolts at the preceding Detroit and Los Angeles auto extravaganzas and left it to import manufacturers to dazzle here.

Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano.

The mid-size model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-generation.

The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerangshaped taillights ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals.

Inside, up to five passengers can expect more of a luxury ride than they might have enjoyed in the outgoing version – heated and cooled front seats will impress those upfront.

The trend in this segment to include huge sunroofs continues here.

Under the hood, Nissan stays with the trusty 3.5-litre six-cylinder powerplant matched to a continuously variable transmission. Expect to see the Murano in the showrooms at the tail end of the year.

Before moving on, the Nissan Sport Sedan Concept should be mentioned as it offers a clue to what the new Maxima might resemble. It too features a panoramic roof stretching almost from the windshield to the rear window. A production model version is expected later in the year, which suggests the L.A. show might benefit from that timetable.

Confessions of a Curber I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii.

They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world.

While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought.

Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right?

One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected.

With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks.

My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition!

Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.”

Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition.

Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle.

I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school.

As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition.

Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold!

Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more.

Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that.

All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

Bitumen ‘even worse’ for shoreline than crude: Black From / A9

The Exxon Valdez carried light crude and lost 250,000 barrels, one eighth of a tanker load. The light oil floated and

could be removed from the beaches.

Even so, after four years of work with up to 11,000 workers and 1,400 boats involved, less than

10 per cent of it was recovered. Roughly 200,000 birds and many kinds of other wildlife were killed.

Approximately 1,300 miles of shoreline

were affected and the fishery has yet to fully recover.

would sink to the bottom, making it unrecoverable and killing virtually everything with which it came in contact.

Imagine if we lost a full tanker load.

Some say that, with GPS-based navigation and double hulls, spills such as Exxon Valdez are not possible today. They are wrong. Double hulls do not prevent hull fracture if there is a collision at speed, only if there is a gentle scrape.

As for the GPS claim, most marine accidents are caused by human inattention, not by a lack of knowledge about position. All ships carried systems to indicate their location before GPS came along. The Exxon Valdez crew could have glanced at their instruments to determine their location but they didn’t; neither did the crew on the ill-fated ferry, Queen of the North.

Marine disasters regularly occur and

a quick search of the internet shows human error is most often the problem.

Undoubtedly there will be many more marine accidents in future. Our grandchildren will not thank us if we willingly risk the destruction of the B.C. coast on our watch.

Fortunately there is a solution that is beneficial for all concerned: all we have to do is build a refinery at Kitimat.

The refinery will convert the bitumen to gasoline, diesel and jet fuel which float and evaporate if they are spilled. Often little or no spill remediation is required. These refined fuels simply do not cause the habitat destruction of conventional or synthetic crude oil, or anywhere near the devastation caused by bitumen.

The second part of this op/ed will run in the next issue. It will discuss the enormous value-add benefits and environmental

advantages of a modern green refinery. The pipeline from Alberta and the tanker fleet to export the refined fuels will also be considered.

Let me declare my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers.

I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled.

I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on this next month.

Barry Clark Anthony Lawler Barry Clark Anthony Lawler (77) passed peacefully at Nanaimo Hospital on April 15 with his family by his side.

Barry was born to the late James and Jeannette Lawler on February 23, 1937 in Vancouver, B.C. In 1946, the Lawlers moved to Franklin River. Barry, along with his brothers Mike and Jim, grew to love the woods and they all took jobs with M and B. Barry went from Whistlepunk to helping the head rigger to bridge crew and building grade. He also managed to woo the secretary, Carol Woodward, making her his wife (of 49 years) and raising three beautiful children. Barry continued building road in the Charlottes, Rivers Inlet, and Sechelt. He formed Koprino Contracting in Holberg and worked there until he retired.

If Barry wasn’t working hard, he was playing hard.

He loved diving, chasing Bullwinkle, riding his motorcycles, and playing at the beach with his children and grandchildren. He was well known around the neighbourhood, walking Riley and chatting with everyone.

Never one to slow down, Barry was skiing with his daughter and family two days before his passing.

Barry is survived by his loving and much loved wife Carol, sons Jim and Bill (Heather), daughter Kelly (Tom), and grandchildren Jaylynn, Makyla, and MJ. A heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to the Nanaimo ER and palliative care staff. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 3 at 2:00pm, at the Sands Funeral Chapel in Nanaimo.

Edward Ivor “Ted” Following a lengthy illness Ted peacefully passed away in West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 78 years of age.

Predeceased by his brother David, he is survived by his beloved wife Betty, children: Mark (Louise), Chris (Jenni) and Susan Kozlowski (Cory); grandchildren: Courtney, Colin, Justin and Jenelle as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Ted grew up in Manitoba, living in Brandon before moving out to BC eventually settling with his family in Port Alberni in the mid 1980’s. Ted worked hard, loved his family and was a passionate gardener, loving to spend hours tinkering in the yard.

Our family would like to express sincere appreciation for the tremendous care and support given by Dr. Damian White and Missy, Dr. Gayleen Hargrove and the Port Alberni Dialysis Unit. Also, to the nephrologists in Nanaimo for their care at the hospital.

A memorial service will take place at 1:00 PM, on Monday, April 28, 2014, at Trinity Church, 4766 Angus St., Port Alberni with Rev. George Pell officiating. Cremation has taken place.

LEA; Fred passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at the age of 77.

Survived by loving wife Anne Marie; children, Frank (Gislaug), Rune (Nicole), Ann-Elin (Jeff) and KurtHelge (Irene); grandchildren, Anita, Kurtis, Britney, Melissa, Kristopher, Tiffany, Karsten, Amalie, Bjornar, Hans and Sophia; great grandchildren, Tanner, Chloe, Halle, Brayden and Laila; Brothers: William (Canada), and Jan (Norway); Sisters: Mary, Judith, Torill (all Norway), Bjorg (Lillemor, Canada).

Predeceased by two brothers, Peder and Sigurd.

Born in Norway, Fred was number five in a family of nine brothers and sisters. He left school early and started his career as a fisherman and sailor, which was an eventful experience around the globe. In 1962 he married his Anne Marie and the following year the first son was born and by 1967 they already had four children! Before the fourth child was born they managed to build their first house at Madla in Stavanger. In 1966 Fred joined Rosenberg Verft in the shipbuilding business and worked here until 1977 when he pursued his dream to come to Canada and join his two brothers and sister who lived in Port Alberni and Nanaimo. His second day in the Valley he started working for Alberni Engineering shipyard. One of Fred’s main tasks was to operate a computerized cutting table, which was an important contribution in the business. Fred retired early from Alberni Engineering in 1999 after a foot injury. He enjoyed bowling, crib and spent much time at Sons of Norway where he served many terms in the role of Club President. Fred loved doing Norwegian crossword puzzles, travelling and visiting family in Canada and Norway. His many stories of his childhood and travels were a source of great joy to his family. His memory and singing of old Norwegian folk songs was fantastic and some of these lyrics could only be sung by Fred.

A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014 at the Italian Canadian Society Hall, 4065 6th Ave, Port Alberni.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be donated to Ty Watson House, 2649 - 2nd Ave, Port Alberni, BC, V9Y 1Z8.

The family would like to thank friends and other family members for all support and we would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Ty Watson for the exceptional care Fred received while he was there.

The Tofino Boat Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing our fleet of boats. This position will be required to test and perform diagnosis on Yamaha outboard engines; resolve motor and propeller breakdowns; and repair any malfunctions on the boats’ navigational equipment and electrical systems. Moreover, this position will maintain accurate maintenance records and supplies, with the goal of being able to actively provide a well-maintained and dependable fleet of boats for our sea-based operations.

The ideal applicant will have: • Minimum 3 years experience in the marine industry; • Able to operate various hand and power tools; • Team player with good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; • Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

This position requires shift-work in a camp-based setting.

men’s team from an era in Port Alberni when basketball was king is being inducted into the Basketball BC Hall of Fame.

The Alberni Athletics team that won the 1955 Senior A National Championship is being inducted in May at a special ceremony in Langley.

“It’s an exciting feeling knowing we were chosen and will be inducted,” said Denny Grisdale, who played on the championship team.

“But it’s also humbling because we’re going to be joining players and teams who were considered great in their time.”

Grisdale said he learned of the news about six weeks ago but stayed mum until all of the surviving members of team were informed.

“Four of the players have passed on now.

Alberni beat the Sault Ste. Marie Gunners in three straight games out of best of five series for the Senior A crown in April of that year in Port Alberni.

The games against the Sault weren’t challenging, Grisdale said. But the lead up to the final was.

Alberni beat the Vancouver Cloverleafs first for the B.C. title, then the Edmonton Town Hallers for the Western Canadian title.

Grisdale said the final game against Vancouver stands out the most. Alberni’s Ron Bisset scored with seconds to go to give the Athletics a 58-57 victory in overtime.

The series against Edmonton stands out for another reason.

“They used some football players to rough us up but we got through that and won,” Grisdale said.

in the win. “I often think that was one of the first things that contributed to the towns ultimately amalgamating,” he said.

“It’s an experience – a fellowship – that I’ll never forget.”

Alberni wasn’t some hayseed team from a small town that took people by surprise.

The Athletics played against some American teams, even playing host to former NBA great Elgin Baylor. Some Alberni players played on the Lower Mainland.

“We were well known. People knew who we were,” Grisdale said.

Alberni had the total package: Joe Samarin’s nimble footwork, Ron Bissett’s deft shooting, Doug Brinham’s jump shots and Al Brown’s magician-like playmaking. But key to the team’s win was coach Elmer Speidel.

“He introduced us to the jump shot, fast break and conditioning,” Grisdale said. “And he had simple plays and a system that was

easy to understand.”

Speidel was brought to Port Alberni in 1953 from Seattle, where he played both collegiate and semipro basketball. Those assets combined with a competitive spirit made Speidel just the coach the Athletics were looking for.

“I was brought here to win, that was my job. We put a winning team on the floor and achieved what we set out to do,” Speidel said.

Speidel brought the Athletics to the Western Canadian final in 1954 but lost to Winnipeg three games straight. “The refs hosed us in that series,” he said.

“The boys deserved better than that. They deserved to win.”

Speidel coached from 1953 to 1965 and retired from coaching after that. Grisdale retired from Senior A ball as well in 1964.

“I got into teaching and high school basketball. But you get old and you move on in life,” Grisdale said.

The Alberni Airborne are headed to the provincial championships in Abbotsford this weekend.

Airborne head to provincials Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club teams participated in their Island Championships at Vancouver Island University (VIU) on April 12–13.

The 14U team

competed in a eightteam tournament on both Saturday and Sunday and our 13U and 12U teams participated in a 6 team tournament on the Sun. For many of

the girls it was their first time playing at a larger venue like VIU. We are very proud on how much our club has been growing.

All three teams will be heading to Provincials Championships in Abbotsford April 25-27.

The 14U team will be

heading to National Championships May 8-11. Both of these tournaments are held at the TRADEX in Abbotsford where there will be games going on at 18 courts all weekend.

Some of our players attended last year but, for many of them this will be their first.
