STARS landed in the field behind École Fox Run School and then transported the 22-year-old man to Foothills Hospital in serious condition. At last report he was in stable condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Dog owners encouraged to ensure proper control following attack

A vicious dog-on-dog attack on a trail near École Steffie Woima Elementary School has animal control officers advising dog walkers to ensure they’re in full control of their pets before taking them out for a walk.

The incident occurred the evening of Apr. 6, when a Westie dog, at the time being walked by its owner, was attacked by two larger dogs, whose owner was unable to restrain them.

While the Westie is now on its way to a full recovery, it sustained injuries to its paw, neck and shoulder. A woman accompanying its walker also received a bite to the hand.

Fire Chief Steve Scanland who was off duty at the time, said Allemekinders, in a news release.

EMS, police and fire department personnel attended the scene.

A landing zone was established in the field behind nearby École Fox Run School by Sylvan Lake firefighters for STARS. “None of those involved were wearing safety equipment, including helmets,” said Allemekinders. “While the investigation is ongoing at this time, no charges have been laid and the names of those involved are not being released.”

“Common sense needs to apply when you’re doing that kind of activity, you have to wear helmets,” he said.

“You have to wear things like gloves and other safety equipment.”

He indicated, “depending on the nature of this activity” there could be a charge of stunting under the Traffic Safety Act which carries a fine of $402.

A 22-year-old Red Deer man received a severe head injury following a spill while longboarding down the hill on Old Boomer Road Saturday afternoon.

He was subsequently transported by STARS air ambulance to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital where he was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at press time.

A second 22-year-old, who suffered less severe injuries, was transported by ground ambulance to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre where he was treated and released.

RCMP Cpl. James Allemekinders said, three men were heading down the hill at what witnesses described as “a high rate of speed” when two of them hit loose gravel, lost control of their boards and wiped out on the asphalt road surface. The third man was able to maintain control and assisted in providing first aid.

“But you can actually restrict the airway by simply pushing up on the trachea where it’s soft at the base of the mouth. That’s how the dog gets its air, and it has to at some point release what it’s got a hold of.”

The Apr. 6 attack was still being investigated at press time, and it was unclear if any charges would be laid in relation to the incident.

Proposals would fundamentally eliminate one of last natural treed areas Dear Editor, I had the opportunity to participate in the public presentation at the multiplex of the development plan for the Riders Ridge/Vistas Park.

This proposal outlines town’s administration vision on how to change this parcel of natural woodland and formalize it. This will require parking lots, childrens’ playgrounds and paved and gravel walking trails etc. to be install. The upshot of all this activity will result in one of the last, if not the last, natural treed parcels to be fundamentally eliminated in the municipality.

I am not against development, but in this situation, present users of this area might be disappointed. Compliant government allowing health care crisis Dear Editor, I am an 86 year old senior who has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. It is an excruciatingly painful affliction. I have had no success in controlling the pain medically. My doctor has recommended that I apply for surgery and I’ve requested that he proceed with making the necessary arrangements.

However, the surgeon has advised him that the current waiting time for a consultation is from eight to ten months.

There has to be something terribly wrong with Alberta’s health care system when patients like me have to endure such a long painful waiting period.

Government authorities are fond of telling us that cuts have to be made in health care costs, and that our health care system is unsustainable.

Throughout the years I have been lobbying for a better oil revenue deal for Alberta, similar to that adopted by Norway. As things stand, money that should be available for health care is now being spent on luxury yachts, private jets, luxurious mansions, resort homes, valuable paintings, artifacts, etc., by private corporate CEO’s and directors, all because of a compliant government that is allowing this to happen.

Five young Sylvan Lake musicians received First Class Honors in the Parkland Music Festival last week in Red Deer and two of them received cash awards.

Judith Craven, a competitor in the

modern piano (open class) was given the top mark of 87 per cent. She was chosen as the most promising student in the festival and awarded the CKRD Grand Award of $250.

Playing in the 11 and under piano class, Kathryn Grimson won with a mark of 84 per cent and won the Edmonton Journal scholarship of $50.

Carolyn Feitl placed second in soprano 18 and under.

Diane Fisher and Anne Swainson were both in third place in their respective piano competitions. ♦ ♦ ♦ Sylvan Lake IODE at their regular meeting decided to go ahead at once with shelf building in the new library room.

Grade 12 students presented with Bibles at celebration

A celebratory atmosphere pervaded as Grade 12 students, teachers and members of Sylvan Lake’s Christian community gathered for the 19th annual Bibles for Grads event at the community centre last Wednesday.

The gymnasium was beautifully decorated in a red, white and black theme with balloons adding to the festive air.

They enjoyed a turkey dinner provided by volunteers from various area churches, watched a captivating performance by the Acronaires from Canadian University College in Lacombe, were recipients of gifts provided by local businesses, and most importantly, each received a Bible with their name inscribed on it.

Mayor Sean McIntyre said he’s been part of the faith community of Sylvan Lake for a long time. “It’s amazing that year after year they talk to grads, embrace the grads.” He wished the grads success in their future and thanked everyone involved in the Bibles for Grads event.

“Your town is proud of you. Congratulations, we wish you all the very best.”

Emcee Julian Price told the students the Bibles are very important. “We believe what is written in these Bibles, believe that it’s very important for you to have these Bibles.”

The Bible “has shaped our lives,” he said. “We believe the words written in the Bible can have the opportunity

to shape your life. At the end of the day the big message is Jesus loves and cares for every single one of you.”

He encouraged those attending to “make every moment count. You never know what moments in your life might shape your life”.

The Acronaires’ performance was the final program of their 40th year. While most of the athletes were college age, there were a couple of 11 year olds with the group and the oldest person was 56.

Students Danielle Dyrland and Bree-Ann Ekelund were invited to join the athletes for one of their demonstrations.

Several of the athletes also provided testimonies to their faith in God. At least 249 Bibles were presented to local students from École H. J. Cody High School, École Secondaire Notre Dame High School in Red Deer, Lighthouse Christian Academy, Sylvan Lake Career High School as well as home schooled students.

“I so appreciate all the volunteers who come out to help from the Christian community in Sylvan Lake,” said organizer Sharon Nielsen. “I’m so grateful for each of them and for the businesses that donate prizes.”

Money for the event is raised through the Good Friday inter-denominational service organized by Sylvan Lake Ministerial Association (which includes Benalto Baptist Church) as well as through individual donations.

An offering during the Massed Choir concert at Christmas also supports the event.

Julian Price talked to Grade 12 students who attended the 19th annual Bibles for Grads celebration at the community centre last Wednesday. Optimist Club seeking members to help with event planning

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Sylvan Lake Optimist Club is aiming to continue its work to benefit local youths, but needs the help of committed volunteers.

The club, chartered in 2009, came close to folding last year with just three members at the time. Although that number has now doubled, organizers say a much larger membership would allow for more fundraising activities — and thus, more funds raised for Sylvan Lake youths.

“We’re hoping to get the ball rolling, and the more we get out about what we do and who we are, the better,” said club treasurer Tasha Young. “It’s really tough to combat volunteer burnout, so that’s one of the reasons why we’ve had to limit the amount of events that we do in a year to just the one.”

Currently, the club’s only annual event is the Boob Tour, billed as a “standup comedy show fighting cancer with laughter”. This year it featured renowned comedians Lamont Ferguson and Garry Shandling, as well as others from within Alberta.

Through ticket sales and a silent auction, the event raised about $3,500 for the Sylvan Lake Youth Cancer Fund created by the club. “(The fund) is kind of our childhood cancer campaign,” said Young. “It can be used for anything from a Make-A-Wish-type scenario, or for a family.

“The first year that we did this, we were able to donate to a family whose son was diagnosed, and they needed extra money to help with bills and gas and having to drive to Edmonton every other day.”

Of the club’s six members, one signed up as recently as last week, and membership drives are planned over the next few months.

The club, in its current state, lacks the resources to put on more than one major event a year. Additional members, however, would mean the possibility for more.

“Even just one or two people helps,” said Young.

“The nice thing about the Optimist Club is your commitment is as much as you want it to be.

“If you can’t attend the meetings every week, that’s fine, but if you’re really good at marketing or advertising or planning, we could use people like that.

“Having that structure there to be able to help plan that kind of stuff is what we really need.”

Those interested in joining are asked to contact Young at 403-887-9477.

They may also attend one of the club’s meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month, between September and June.

Meetings are held at Pier 7, and begin at 7 p.m.

PRACTICE RESURRECTION

In his book, “Living the Resurrection Life,” Eugene Peterson writes, “The resurrection of Jesus creates and makes available the reality in which we are formed as new creatures in Christ by the Holy Spirit. This is a foreign concept in our ego-centric, do-it-yourself, control freakish society.

However, the Christian life is a Jesus-resurrection life, a life in us that is accomplished by the power of the resurrection, the Holy Spirit.”

The resurrection was the ultimate reminder of God¹s power and love. The first Christians basked in it, rejoiced because of it, lived in it — every single day. The resurrection wasn’t just about receiving eternal life; it was about fully living life in the here and now. This life after the resurrection is full of opportunities and possibilities.

Friends, we need to learn to “live the resurrection.” We’ve been given a new lease on life, as well as a new life today

and a new life tomorrow and beyond. Too often we take this resurrection for granted, become complacent and “run through the motions” of faith. We must remember that we have been led from prison cells into the wide open spaces of God’s love and eternal power.

Maybe resurrection, like everything else, needs to be practiced. Why practice resurrection? How about this?

If you want to know how to do something, you have to practice how to do it. And anything worth doing is worth practicing to do.

Practicing resurrection! It’s what we all really long to be able to do. To move beyond a crippling grief over the death of a loved one. To envision and live into new opportunities following the loss of a job. To live through a debilitating depression and find new reasons for hope. To overcome our fears and live life with a spirit of adventure and possibility. These are all part of what it means to practice resurrection. You can practice resurrection daily in all its many forms.

Reflection - A cool foggy morning with a skiff of snow on the streets greeted a small group of about 75 people who participated in the annual Good Friday Prayer Walk with the cross through the streets of Sylvan Lake. The crowd was smaller than in past years, possibly because of the weather. “Perhaps it’s fitting that the day is a little more sombre,” said Dale Plante while addressing the crowd at the beginning of the walk. The group stopped at several stations to pray for various sectors of the community. The walk, a time of reflection, proceeds from Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church north on 50th Street to Lakeshore Drive, east to 46th Street, south to 49th Avenue, east to 43rd Street, then west on 48th Avenue before turning on 44th Street and ending at Sylvan Lake Alliance Community Church where an interdenominational service was held by Sylvan Lake M i n i s t e r i a l Association.

- In the early morning hours of Sunday a small group gathered around the bonfire in Centennial Park for the annual Easter Sunday Sunrise Service (at 6:30 a.m.). Leading the group with songs, scripture and prayers were Cathy Janke, John Rivers, Rev. Jin Woo Kim and Julie Olive. Following the service, about 30 people who attended enjoyed hot cross buns homemade by Harla Yoos, and fish served by Diane Powell and Lynn Bergen. In recent years the service, organized by Memorial Presbyterian Church, has been held on the pier but it was too wet this year. Prior to that the service was held on the beach at Camp Kannawin.

Historic pictures, stories of arena requested for commemorative section

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Following Sylvan Lake’s success in the Kraft Hockeyville competition, the Sylvan Lake News is preparing a commemorative section which will provide history of the arena, the Hockeyville journey and information about the new complex being planned now.

We’d like to solicit historic pictures of the arena and the town’s hockey teams to include in this section, said editor Steve Dills. Your stories would also be wel-

come.

Working with the Sylvan Lake Hockeyville committee, we’re also planning to capture some of the information and photos which have been posted to the group’s Facebook page.

As well, we’d welcome your ideas on what should be included in this historic section which takes us from the inception of an indoor ice surface in the late 1960s and early 1970s through to today.

Theft of air hose and tools from Husky site reported Sunday, April 13th 12:07 a.m. – RCMP received a complaint of a noisy party bus in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Hinshaw Drive in Sylvan Lake. The bus driver was asked to move out of the area as the passengers were causing a disturbance for tenants in the building at which point some of the passengers on the bus became belligerent. A constable arrived on scene and advised the driver that the music must be turned down as the bus was in a residential area. The bus then left the area without incident.

Monday, April 14th 1:05 p.m. – A complaint of mischief to mailboxes in Red Deer County was reported to RCMP. Witnesses reported that several mailboxes in the area of Sand Road and Range Road 24 were damaged with one mailbox destroyed and its contents set on fire. An investigation is continuing.

Wednesday, April 16th 10:54 p.m. – RCMP attended a single

vehicle collision in which the female driver sustained injury. A 54 year old woman from Alhambra was driving westbound on Highway 11 at Highway 20 when she slowed and then collided directly with a light standard at the intersection. She was treated for non-life threatening injuries by EMS. Alcohol and road conditions were not factors in the collision.

Thursday, April 17th 9:23 a.m. – A theft from a Husky Oil

site was reported. A complainant advised that an air hose reel and air hose along with tools were stolen. There was no evidence of forced entry at the facility located near the Highway 11 at Range Road 24 intersection.

Saturday, April 19th 3:28 a.m. – A 911 call was placed to police in relation to a family dispute in progress at a residence on Lakeway Boulevard. A 47-year-old woman from Sylvan Lake was reportedly intoxicated and causing a disturbance. The woman was arrested for breach of peace and lodged in cells until sober.

2:28 p.m. – A 22-year-old Eckville male is facing a charge in relation to a traffic stop on 48th Avenue at 50th Street in Sylvan Lake. A truck was pulled over at the intersection by RCMP members after it was found to be in violation of various Traffic Safety Act regulations. The male driver was also noted to have alcohol on his breath; however he refused to provide a breath sample. He is charged with Refusal of an Approved Screening Device.

8:33 p.m. – RCMP have charged a male in relation to a domestic dispute involving his former spouse.

A female reported that she had been threatened by her ex-husband and had also been previously assaulted by him. Sylvan Lake RCMP issued a warrant for the 39-year-old

Red Deer male’s arrest. He is charged with assault and uttering threats.

Sunday, April 20th 10:08 p.m. – A 911 call was received by RCMP regarding a driving complaint. Drivers of two trucks were witnessed racing down 46th Street onto Lakeshore Drive and then onto 50th Street in Sylvan Lake. One of the trucks was located by police and a stunting ticket was issued to the 20-year-old driver, a resident of Eckville. A stunting ticket carries a $402 fine.

11:43 p.m. – A 40-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing an assault charge in relation to a domestic dispute at a residence on Marina Bay Court in Sylvan Lake. The 21-year-old victim advised that she had been assaulted and choked following an argument. She was able to exit the residence without further incident and contacted police.

Businesses moving, new businesses opening downtown according to stats

Movement of two commercial businesses in the downtown core was highlighted in building statistics for March, according to information released by the town earlier this month.

A permit was issued for tenant

Year-to-date building statistics show construction valued at $12.684 million permitted in the first three months, compared to $10.172 million in the previous year. Permits have been issued for 17 new homes while in 2013 permits were issued in the first three months for 21 homes. Music festival proposed for pier in mid-August

Proponents of a music festival on the pier in mid-August will be back before councillors at their next meeting, Apr. 28.

They outlined some of their plans and answered concerns at council’s

Apr. 14 meeting, stating they would definitely change the proposed date as it conflicted with Jazz At The Lake Festival.

Councillors requested a full presentation at their next meeting.

True Channel Entertainment had planned to host Summer City Music Jam on the pier in the provincial

park on Aug. 16. While the application had been submitted to the Friends of Sylvan Lake Provincial Park committee, Ron Lebsack, the town’s community services director, brought it forward “as an event like this will have a significant impact on the Town of Sylvan Lake”.

Among the bands included in the proposal were the Juno award winning Sam Roberts Band, Walk Off The Earth, The Trews, Foster The People, and Girl Talk.

“Please drink responsibly and enjoy the music,” stated the front page.

The event is billed as “a one day, family friendly music festival that anticipates approximately 4,000 attendees”. It would run from noon to 11 p.m. and would require the pier area to be closed to public use the day before, day of and day following the event except for those with tickets. A beer garden would be included, according to the proposal.

Earlier in the council meeting, Eric Allison, president of the Jazz At The Lake Festival Society raised concerns that the two events would conflict, particularly because one of the jazz festival’s free events, a family picnic concert would take place the same day in Lions Legacy Park, just a few blocks from the pier.

“We are certainly not against bringing more musical events to town,” he said. “We say the more the merrier! But we strongly feel that any musical event on the pier (or anywhere else in town, for that matter) on the same weekend could seriously

Allison pointed out the festival has been held on the third weekend in August for the past 12 years.

During discussion, councillor Dale Plante said he wants “to encourage something that’s going to bring a healthy atmosphere to town. I’m very concerned that whatever comes to the community contributes to the fabric of the community.” He asked how this event would contribute. He also voiced concerns about parking and how it would be impacted in the area.

“I like the idea, I’d like to have it,” said councillor Matt Prete. When the Trauma Tour was in town he took his kids there and they had a good time, he related. His only concern was a conflict with the jazz festival.

“I believe they’re two different crowds,” but he added, “I’d prefer two different weekends.”

Councillor Jas Payne noted that with Shake The Lake not happening this year, the community is definitely going to feel that loss. “This is not the type of event I want to say no to.” He added that while the spectators may be different for the two events, “I think being on the same day would be a disadvantage to Jazz At The Lake. I’d really like to go to Jazz At The Lake but I’d really like to see Sam Roberts. I would not support trying to have them at the same time.”

Councillors deferred any decision on the proposal until their next meeting.

Tennis has captivated young teen who’s winning provincially and nationally

After tiring of watching her sister, Madison, play tennis, Kirsten Prelle took up the sport herself at the age of 5.

“My sister signed up for tennis camp in the summer and got hooked on it, started taking lessons,” said Kirsten. “I got tired of watching her play, started taking lessons and haven’t stopped since.”

That was in 2005 and in the past eight years, she’s propelled herself to the top ranks in Canada, most recently winning the Girls Flight 4 championship at the Under 14 Rogers Junior Nationals in Vancouver.

“In the nationals you compete against the top girls from across Canada,” said Kirsten. “It’s good experience, you see how you measure up to the other players.”

Coach Rene Simon, also from Sylvan Lake, trains Prelle at the Red Deer Tennis Club. “He’s been such a great help ever since I got here,” said Kirsten. “I’ve been training here a year and a half and he has help me accelerate my game so much.”

Since Simon is an active competitor, she said he’s able to share mental skills on how to behave on the court, slow down, take your time, think about what you’re doing and if there’s something you can do differently.

Her hitting partner is Tyler Begg, another Sylvan resident.

Tennis consists of two seasons, Kirsten said. The indoor season, which runs from October to the end of February, just finished with the nationals in late March. Then the outdoor season runs from April to July with nationals in August.

There’s a good group of competitors in the province. In her first tournament next weekend, the draw includes 29 girls from across Alberta.

Currently Kirsten is a student at Sylvan Lake Career High Outreach school. “They’re really good, making it flexible for me to attend practices and tournaments and still get all my work done,” she said.

She also credits her sister, Madison, as being “a really big inspiration. Without her I would never really have started. She’s always been

the benchmark of where I wanted to go in my tennis career.”

The pair practice together and play in doubles competitions. This year, however, Madison is suffering a rotator injury which has hampered her play.

Last year they played in three 5.0 doubles tournaments winning all of them.

5.0 is the highest level of play before a tennis player enters the open category. “We love doubles so we play in the adult tournaments,” said Kirsten. Once you’re into the U14 category you’re eligible to play in adult tournaments, she explained.

There’s a broader pool of competitors to play against there.

The nice thing about the Red Deer Tennis Club is it has a lot of adult players so they play doubles once a week.

She started playing at the Newmarket Tennis Club in Ontario.

Since her family has moved a lot for work, she’s played at different clubs across Canada ever since, including the Saville Centre in Edmonton, the World Health Centre in Calgary and Rexall Centre in Toronto, the home of Tennis Canada.

While living in Cochrane, prior to their move to Sylvan Lake, Kirsten took time off her training to coach youngsters in the sport of tennis.

BOUCHARD John “Butch” April 13, 1928 - March 30, 2014 Born in Espanola, Butch was predeceased by his wife, Marian (Jo) Warner, December 8, 2013.

Butch is survived by his sister, Anne; his two brothers: Marcel and Paul; as well as his aunt Alma Dequire Arthurs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Butch, a PO2 in the Canadian Navy was a drum major, and band musician for 15 years, as well as an avid golfer who loved music. A long time resident of Sylvan Lake, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

As per his request, no funeral service will occur, but a memorial is planned for a future date.

- Members of Sylvan Lake’s emergency services responded to a collision between a bicyclist and vehicle at the corner of Parkland Drive and Sylvan Drive just after 5 p.m. Monday evening. The young cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, received minor injuries. A second cyclist was uninjured.
