A different out of the box fundraiser for a charitable organization with multiple projects.

Why do you support this organization?

Because I know people who have used and needed the assistance of the organization. I got involved with the walk after my partner saw a poster and her son did the walk in a Toronto University. I decided to start my participation in 2012. I then decided to add to my ink collection by tattooing a red high heel shoe for 2012 and 2013 and now looking forward to a 2014 tattoo.

What do you see for the future of this event?

An increase in walkers and awareness of families in crises.

Rediscovering the vital role of a doula

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express An association in Red Deer offers expecting women support throughout their pregnancy and beyond.

A number of doulas from around Central Alberta are a part of the Red Deer Doula Association.

A birth doula is a woman who is trained in childbirth who supports a couple emotionally and physically during labour. It is continuous support before a woman gives birth and during labour as well. Doulas offer support during hospital births and during home births, although a midwife is required if a woman chooses to give birth at home.

“A woman would start interviewing doulas as early as when they are four weeks pregnant, but I have also had calls for assistance when a woman’s water broke too and I get to the hospital and meet them for the first time,” said Christine Catherall, a birth and postpartum doula. “It really is anytime.”

Christa Duquette, a birth doula, said it is preferred that expecting mothers allow their chosen doulas to get to know them ahead of time before they give birth.

“When we get to know them then we can tailor their care to what they wish,” she said, adding they typically like to meet with their clients two to three times before they go into labour.

“We become part of a team of care providers for an expecting mom and couple.”

Duquette said a doula provides comfort and reassurance to expecting moms before and during birth.

“We are there for comfort and a lot of times it’s just having someone there to ask if how they are feeling

is normal or if what they are experiencing is normal. It brings them confidence and helps them have the confidence to do what needs to be done.”

A postpartum doula is a woman who is trained to give a mother and baby aftercare at home.

“I offer physical and emotional support as well as just practical household things – it’s whole family support but it is focused on mom and baby,” said Wendy Letwin, a postpartum doula. “I work with families anytime from the newborn stage right up until 12 months of age. It is a tough time for parents in that first year and just because they’re doing well at one stage, doesn’t mean they won’t need support in a different stage.”

Letwin said her role changes depending on the family she is serving.

“I do my best to work within the framework of the family. Families have already made decisions regarding how they would like things to go, so I am not there to tell them to do things differently, I am there to support the decisions that have already been made in a non-judgmental way. I really become what the family needs me to be.

“I can’t tell you how many times I come to a home and the mom’s face just lights up because I am there.”

As part of a birth and postpartum doula’s certification, they have to be educated on the most current information.

Catherall said a birth doula’s role is to be completely supportive of an expecting mother before and during the process of labour. “We educate our clients and during our time together before the birth

we determine what my role will be, how involved their partner is going to be - if they have one, we show them comfort measures, we talk to them about their birth plan, when to call us and what to expect at the hospital, how things will typically go,” she said. “We are there to provide education and continuous support.”

Catherall added one misconception is doulas are nannies, but that is not the case, they are simply there for support. “We’re not taking over the care of baby – we will watch the baby while mom takes a shower, or prepare a snack for mom so she can sit and feed baby, or we’ll help figure out a diaper changing station or help with bathing baby, but we help mom however we can.”

In addition, Letwin said doulas are knowledgeable about local resources for families if they need other support as well. “If someone is having questions

about a certain topic, we can direct them to get their questions answered. It’s up to each family to make their decisions and if they are educated then it makes it much easier.”

Meanwhile, Duquette said there is becoming a need for doulas when in the family dynamics, the dad works away.

“There is definitely an increased need in this area.

We even see a need if the family farms – the men

are in the field and can’t be home. And grandparents work nowadays, so in the past a lot of women would have their moms come and stay with them, but that has changed,” she said.

“We live in a unique province because we do have oil and we do have agriculture and it’s a working province so lots of people work. The doula is an idea being rediscovered – we need the sisterhood and the mother mothering the mother.”

The cost for a doula can vary depending on their experience and skill set.

“It’s not about the cost.

The most important thing is the connection a family has with their doula. We are there to be a part of their team and to be their biggest cheerleader along the way.”

Local woman finds success in male dominated field

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Not many women can look at a spread of massive Caterpillar parts and identify them by serial number and function, but journeyperson heavy-duty parts technician Lori Douglas can.

Douglas has been an employee of Red Deer’s Finning Caterpillar for nearly 10 years and it was here that she started as a parttime warehouse worker while attending post-secondary schooling to become a teacher.

Unsure of her love for that particular career choice and as she watched her student loans continuously accumulate, she made the decision to take a part-time job at Finning.

Eventually Douglas de-

cided she would drop out of school and pursue what was then considered a traditionally male-dominated career in the warehouse at Finning.

She soon found out she and her husband were pregnant with their now six-year-old son.

Although Finning had regulation practices in place for the women working in their offices when it came to maternity leave, they were unsure of how to handle Douglas’ pregnancy.

“They were worried I was going to lift some thing too heavy,” said Douglas.

“They had never had to deal with something like this before and they really weren’t sure what to do.”

She carried out her pregnancy successfully and soon returned to work,

Coming from a long line of parts technicians, her decision would follow that of her father and her grandfather who also both worked for Finning Caterpillar during their careers.

While it was a hard choice to make, Douglas jumped at the opportunity to begin a new journey. Of course returning to school with a small child at home wouldn’t be easy, but she knew the benefits of her schooling would provide a better future for her and her family.

With Finning supporting her all the way by providing payment for her schooling as well as financial support throughout her schooling, she began the process of obtaining her journeyperson ticket.

“I would have to do homework in the morning before my son woke up, or after he went to bed at night,” said Douglas. “It was definitely hard, but I think most apprentices struggle with school and I was so lucky to have the support of Finning, they are an incredible company to work for.”

Throughout the threeyear process at Red Deer College, Douglas received numerous awards for her academic standing, which included in her last year the Top Apprentice Award for Alberta which is given to an apprentice who achieves the highest overall marks in their final period of training.

“WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND IT CAME TIME FOR ME TO PICK A CAREER NO ONE EVEN TOLD ME THAT TRADES WERE AN OPTION. I DON’T THINK THE TRADES ARE PROPOSED TO GIRLS THE WAY THEY ARE TO BOYS AND I WISH THAT WOULD CHANGE AND I’M SURE IT ALREADY HAS IN WAYS.” LORI DOUGLAS Their employers are then contacted for an employer recommendation. If the employer recommendation complements the combined

mark, that apprentice qualifies for a Top Apprentice Award.

Douglas worked as a heavy-duty parts technician for a number of years under the title of ‘journeyperson parts leadhand’, until recently as she was promoted to ‘parts warehouse operations specialist’.

She now travels across the country training other Caterpillar warehouses on the best operating practices and procedures and hopes to continue growing her career with Finning Caterpillar.

“When I was in high school and it came time for me to pick a career no one even told me that trades were an option. I don’t think the trades are proposed to girls the way they are to boys and I wish that would change and I’m sure it already has in ways,” she said. “If I had gone into the trades right out of high school and known it was an option I could be four years further into my career by now and I hope more girls and women decide to pursue careers in the trades in the future.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

How to break out of the ‘friend zone’ I write a lot of couple-focused heavy articles, from infidelity and divorce to marital discord and family breakdown. Indeed, most of the questions I get from readers are about these kinds of issues. Recently, however, I got a question of a lighter nature, one that made me smile. It was from a single woman who asked, “How do you get a male friend to see you as girlfriend material?”

MACLEOD I like this question. Not just because it’s fun, but because I think this lady is on the right track by considering a romance with a friend versus shopping online for a stranger. Online dating sites are popular, but let’s be honest – most women have to kiss a lot of frogs before they find their prince.

This spring, I am encouraging women to date the ‘old fashioned’ way. This means logging off the Internet and browsing the living, breathing world around them to find Mr. Right. You never know. The man of your dreams might be right under your nose.

It’s not uncommon for a platonic friendship to blossom into something more.

In fact, some people would argue it’s inevitable. In the chick flick When Harry Met Sally, Harry (Billy Crystal), tells Sally (Meg Ryan), that “Men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.” On the flip side, some people say it’s impossible to heat a cool friendship to the

point of sizzling romance.

It would feel like kissing your brother.

The bottom line is, you’ll never know unless you try.

If you know a man who is lately putting a little extra spring into your step, here are five key strategies to see whether you can break out of the ‘friend zone’.

1. Change your look.

If you’ve been buddies for a while, your appearance may be so familiar to him that he doesn’t notice you anymore. To turn his head, you’ll need to make a change. A new hairstyle or colour, updated makeup and a revamped wardrobe will all help him see that you’re more than just his gal pal—you’re also one hot catch.

2. Be more mysterious.

Think Greta Garbo for this stage of your plan. One of the most seductively inscrutable vixens of the

cinema, this leading lady mastered the art of feminine mystique. Although tell-all transparency is fine in friendship, an element of mystery is essential in romance as it creates an erotic aura of wonder and discovery. Instead of diving for the phone every time your boy buddy calls, let it go to voicemail. Don’t return texts too quickly. Be less accessible in general.

Let him wonder where you are, what you’re doing, and with whom you’re doing it. And when you do speak with him, don’t share every detail of your day (or night). Let his imagination fill in the blanks.

3. Find a sexy segue.

When you’re ready to plant the first seed of sexual innuendo in your male friend’s head, you might mischievously reveal that you had a ‘naughty dream’ about him. When he press-

es you for details (which he will!), be playfully vague.

You can further amp up his sexual interest by using flirtatious body language.

4. Take it slow. Taking things slowly (translation not jumping into bed right away) gives you time to ensure this crush is true love.

It also builds sexual anticipation which makes your

man desire you even more.

You want to make sure any lingering traces of ‘friend’ are completely gone before you make the leap to ‘lover’.

5. Seal the deal. This is the fun part. Yet before you taste this formerly forbidden fruit, you should make sure that you and your friend turned boyfriend have the same expectations

Women’s sports teams abundant in Red Deer

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Women only sports teams are great ways for women to feel comfortable while getting healthy, making friends and taking time for themselves.

Several women only teams and leagues are available in Red Deer. One of these is the Red Deer Women’s Soccer League.

“A lot of the women who are in our league are mothers, so it’s kind of their chance to get involved,” says Allie Gyonyor, president of the women’s soccer league.

“Instead of being a soccer mom and taking kids to soccer, this gives women a chance to get out and get their own socializing or exercise, or work on their self-esteem and confidence.”

Aside from obvious physical benefits of sports, women only teams offer a comfortable environment where women can gain self-confidence and make lasting friendships.

“I think for girls coming right out of high school, it’s good for them to be able to make friends. Once you graduate high school, or university or college, it’s a little harder to

make good friends,” says Dallas Hicks, senior women’s representative for Red Deer Titans Rugby Club. “If you stay active and play on a sports team, it’s a lot easier to have that close-knit group of girls that basically become your family for a bit.”

For some, a competitive league is right up their alley. For others, a casual beer league is better suiting. No matter the style, Red Deer has a team to suit. Sports teams promote teamwork, sharing, working together, confidence, active lifestyles and friendship. Many of the leagues offer choices between competitive and casual teams.

Trudy Heraldson, president of the Red Deer Ladies’ Fastball Association, prefers the fast-paced competition oriented league.

“You’re still out there to have fun, but it’s very competitive. We’re trying to keep fastball alive. Even if you haven’t played for five or 10 years, get back in there or form a new team. Stay in the sport.”

Heraldson adds there are less competitive fastball teams in the league, but most of the teams compete in tournaments and eventually provincials.

but each of the women only teams urges women to get out and do something for themselves.

“We really want women to know that it doesn’t matter if you’re competitive or recreational. We’ve got the space for you to play,” says Gyonyor Both Hicks and Heraldson say the same thing about their leagues – everyone is welcome, and there is a place for each and every person who is interested.

“When you’re doing something you love, and you have women around you that enjoy the sport too, it makes it easier to stay close with them and have that connection,” says Hicks. “You can choose whether or not you want to play a high competitive level, or just be sort of a beer league, and

do it for the social part of it.”

Along with rugby, soccer and fastball, Red Deer offers a plethora of women only teams that also include volleyball, basketball and bowling among other sports.

To get involved, go online and search for women only teams in Red Deer. Many of the leagues offer flexibility for mothers and are reasonably priced – usually between $120- $250 for a season, plus equipment. Prices vary per sport and team.

Most of the leagues register by teams, so it is up to women to find a team to play on.

How to exercise during your pregnancy Pregnancy can diminish your overall energy levels, but regular bouts of exercise will help you get through your day. The good news is that you can safely start an exercise program during pregnancy even if you’ve been an avid couch potato until now.

WHEELER If you were sedentary before you became pregnant, it’s important to review your exercise plan with your healthcare provider before you begin. Pregnancy isn’t the time to try to lose weight or begin a vigorous exercise routine, but if you aren’t in any of the highrisk categories, you can pursue an exercise regimen at a mild to moderate level.

Weight training during pregnancy is an excellent way to improve your muscle tone, strength and stamina which will help you through labour and delivery.

Aside from making you feel better there are several other benefits to physical activity during pregnancy.

Exercise can help relieve backaches and improve your posture by strengthening and toning muscles in your back, butt, and thighs. It also helps reduce constipation by accelerating movement in your intestine and help prevent wear and tear on your joints (which become

loosened during pregnancy due to normal hormonal changes) by activating the lubricating fluid in your joints. Other benefits of being active during pregnancy are helping you sleep better by relieving the stress and anxiety that might make you restless at night, helping you look better by increasing the blood flow to your skin giving you a healthy glow, gaining more control over your breathing to help manage pain during labour and helping you regain your pre-pregnancy body more quickly.

It is always best to be exercising under the supervision of a personal trainer to ensure your program is appropriate for your level of fitness. The level of exercise recommended will depend on your level of pre-pregnancy fitness. For most women, the goal is to maintain their fitness level throughout pregnancy. If you have been following a regular exercise program prior to your pregnancy, you should be able to maintain that program to some degree throughout your pregnancy. Exercise does not increase the risk for miscarriage in a normal low risk pregnancy. If you are just starting an exercise program as a way of improving your health during your pregnancy, you should start very slowly and be careful not to over exert yourself. Consider a prenatal yoga class that is specifically designed for pregnant women.

that it is time to reduce the level of exercise you are performing.

A good rule of thumb is to slow down if you can’t comfortably carry on a conversation. You should never exercise to the point of exhaustion or breathlessness.

This is a sign that your baby and your body cannot get the oxygen supply they need. Take frequent breaks, and drink plenty of fluids during exercise. It is important to wear comfortable exercise footwear that gives strong ankle and arch support. Avoid lifting

weights above your head and using weights that strain the lower back muscles. During the second and third trimesters, avoid exercise that involves lying flat on your back as this decreases blood flow to the uterus. Include relaxation and stretching before and after your exercise program.

Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates.

Remember that physical activity isn’t limited to resistance training. If the gym isn’t your

thing, that’s ok but do not be afraid to be active during your pregnancy! Walking is still better than nothing!

Exercise will only benefit you and your baby’s health in the long run. The stronger, fitter and healthier you are during this time the better this wonderful experience will be. Listen to your body and follow the recommendations of your health care provider for a safe and active pregnancy.

Local woman behind important community agency

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express When Jennifer Vanderschaeghe began volunteering at the Lethbridge HIV Connection (LHC) on Aug. 1, 1993, it was at a time when AIDS was the leading cause of death for North Americans aged 25-44.

Fast forward 20 years and she is now leading Central Alberta’s battle against HIV/AIDS as the executive director of the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society.

Although it has been a few years since her work on the frontlines and she now resides mostly behind the scenes, her fingerprints from the last 10 years at CAANS can be seen on a wide range of inspirational projects throughout the community.

“I went into the LHC wanting to volunteer somewhere interesting and provocative and at that time in Lethbridge the most provocative you could get was the agency talking about sexual health, HIV, and drugs,” she said. “If you’ve ever seen the movie Dallas Buyers Club then you’d know this was a time when HIV/AIDS medications, such as AZT were being tested and released.”

These new drug therapies being released such as AZT meant the industry of HIV/AIDS treatment was about to change, as the life expectancy and longevity of HIV positive people was to greatly increase.

“In that first year of me being involved in the HIV movement, I buried 12 friends,” she explained

of her early days with the LHC. “We had two friends that died on the same day, so you’d have a funeral on Wednesday and one Thursday and you’d have a group of folks who’d gone to both, but now HIV positive people live so much longer.”

Vanderschaeghe explained how CAANS now has people in their caseload who were diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the 80s and thanks to treatment are now living to be quite a bit older. They are now facing issues such as heart disease from old age and other health issues not associated their previous diagnosis.

“Early on when I told people that I worked for an HIV organization they were scared and kind of freaked out,” she explained.

“They would say things like, ‘Oh, that’s too bad’ because they would assume I was HIV positive or ‘Aren’t you scared you’re going to catch something?’

“But today people are a bit more understanding and open to talking about it and although there is still a stigma around the HIV movement it’s getting better.”

Vanderschaeghe’s journey carried on from the LHC to various places including the Provincial AIDS Organization, as well as Living Positive Edmonton where she was the organization’s first HIV negative staff member.

Her compassion for those living with HIV/AIDS is unwavering. For this caring nature she gives credit to her parents who are both psychiatric nurses.

Her work over the years at various organizations has included supporting those living with HIV in ways such as connecting them with others facing the same issues, helping HIV positive people connect with infectious disease doctors in Calgary or Edmonton, preventing the spread of HIV/ AIDS through handing out condoms and clean needles, educating those living with the virus,

as well as educating the public on HIV/AIDS, and much more.

These days she stays busy writing proposals for funding for projects to help the community’s HIV movement, but said she is particularly proud of past projects such as Night Reach which puts a team of two workers into downtown Red Deer distributing information and harm reduction supplies such as needles, condoms,

and crack stems to people on the streets as well as a joint project with the RCMP to team up with a mental health worker to help vulnerable people on the streets.

Her hope for the future of CAANS is to continue to integrate her work further into the community and to continue to enrich the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS in Central Alberta. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Central Alberta women to ‘shimmy’ for a cause

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express A fun and unique fundraiser that will beneďŹ t a local cause is set to take place in Central Alberta next month.

Shimmy Mob, a â€˜ďŹ‚ash mob’ type event, is the largest event of its kind by the number of geographical territory covered in one day creating awareness and raising funds for women’s and children’s shelters in participating communities. More than 2,100 belly dancers in 156 countries and ďŹ ve continents are involved.

The Central Alberta event will run at the AG Foods on Main St. in Delburne on May 10. This also happens to be World Belly Dance Day as well. “Dressed in the Shimmy Mob t-shirt, hip scarves and black pants, thousands of dancers all over the world will perform the same choreography and raise money for their local charities that support victims of domestic violence,� said Kathleen Ennis, team leader for Delburne and who also teaches at Shadow Dancer Studio in the Delburne.

In Alberta, there are teams in Calgary, Rocky Mountain House, Olds, Wetaskiwin and Delburne. “Shimmy Mob lets people know about World Belly Dance Day and showcases the art form of the dance. At the same time, it is something fun that gives back to the community. Our primary objective is to raise donations for our local charities.�

This is the second year Ennis has been the team leader in Delburne and she said last year’s event was a success and they hope to achieve even greater success this year. “Last year we raised $900 for the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter and approximately $700 for Delburne

Safe Families,� said Ennis. “This year, on May 10th at noon we will be hosting a beef on a bun barbeque, bake sale and belly dancing in front of AG Foods on Main Street, with proceeds going to Delburne Safe Families. “I do hope the movement continues, and I’m sure it will grow the more people hear about it. In 2011 we had 30 participating cities, in 2012 there were 113, last year we had 156, and this year we’re up to 162 locations.�

Ennis added she encourages women to participate in next year’s event, as registration has closed for this year. “There’s a real sense of satisfaction and pride when we do something that beneďŹ ts our communities.

There’s also a sense of accomplishment when we learn something that takes us out of our comfort zone. Participation can also take many forms. There are dancers, donors and sponsors, and of course we need spectators and hungry people at our event.�

She added by registering as a participant in the event, women will have the chance to not only learn how to belly dance, but they will also be supporting a worthy cause. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for women to try belly dancing. “The choreography is easy and fun, and learning a dance can build a sense of conďŹ dence and inner strength. “I hope that they will appreciate the beauty of the ancient art form of belly dance, and that it might even encourage someone to take a lesson and ďŹ nd out it’s not about doing something to please or entice anyone else, it’s about doing something for yourself that makes you feel good. “Plus, it feels really great to be able to contribute to the community and support

other women in this way,� said Ennis. “As well, the more we can shine light on the subject of domestic violence, the better the chance that women who are victims of any type of abuse will realize that there is help out there for them, to not be afraid, and ask for that help. “It’s also important for men and young people to join the conversation so we can collectively take a stand, and put an end to

abuse,� she added.

Skin maintenance through the decades Have you ever known someone who spent years basking in the sun and generally not taking care of their skin and then eventually get a bunch of procedures done at once?

ROACH difference. Rather than play out that scenario, why not maintain your skin throughout the years so that any major procedures aren’t as noticeable?

One of the best things you can do for your skin, no matter what your age, is to make sure you remove your makeup and cleanse at night before bed. Your skin, like your body, repairs itself at night and going to bed with a day’s worth of makeup and grime on your face will stop the recovery process in its tracks. Wash with warm, not hot, water to keep skin from drying out and avoid cleansers with harsh detergents.

After cleansing, choose a moisture-rich cream that contains emollients like ceramides to boost the skin’s natural barrier and seal moisture in.

For those of you in your 20s, the main objective is to maintain the great skin you already have. Use a moisturizer with sunscreen -this is the most important health habit. Recent studies show that wearing a daily sunscreen on the face reduced one’s risk of developing melanoma by 50%.

Look for one SPF30 or higher that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Invest in a good, overall eye cream, as eyes tend to show the ďŹ rst signs of aging. Start using an eye cream with caffeine to reduce morning pufďŹ ness.

Also look for ingredients like antioxidants and retinol to slow down the aging process. Incorporate retinol into your routine.

Vitamin-A (which is what retinol is derived from) ďŹ ghts wrinkles and helps to prevent breakouts.

Turning 30 can mean noticeable changes to the skin – texture feels drier and skin tone can become more uneven. Exfoliation becomes even more vital as we approach 30.

Women in their 30s are concerned about maintaining radiance, so be sure to exfoliate at least twice a week. If a scrub at home isn’t enough, try a microdermabrasion. It is more aggressive but not so much that you will have any down time. Your skin becomes drier as you get older so the moisturizer you used in your 20s may no longer

be rich enough. Now is the time to start thinking about wrinkle prevention and upgrading to something more hydrating.

Hearts Desire Gala set for Red Deer next month

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Ladies of Red Deer and area will have a chance to celebrate their health and raise awareness in style on May 8 at the Hearts Desire Gala.

The gala is designed as an evening for women to come together and raise donations and awareness for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The focus is on women’s health and illness prevention.

“Our goal (for donations) is always the moon,” laughs Carole Verrault, chair for

the gala. “We are hoping to raise $25,000 this year, and it looks very reasonable.”

The gala is still a couple of weeks away, but only 100 of the 300 tickets are still available. All funding and proceeds are given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

“Most women don’t know they’re having a heart attack because their signs are different from men. We can have all different types of symptoms, like backaches or headaches.”

This year, the event lineup includes a fashion show with local products and a martial arts presentation

by Master Rim’s Taekwondo, among others.

The Bra Lounge, One Tooth, Great Strides and Bridal Couture are among the local vendors to be demonstrating their products during the fashion show, as well.

Ladies will also have a chance to win a heart shaped pendant, courtesy of Clowes Jewellers.

ATB is the major sponsor, but there are several other sponsors who have earned ‘Diamond Heart Sponsor’ titles after donating over $5,000 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

There are three tiers

of sponsors for corporate interest – Diamond, Platinum and Gold. Each level represents a different minimum donation, and allows companies to show their support for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Verrault said she found out about the gala years

ago, and has gone every year since.

The first year she went as a guest, the second and third years as a volunteer, and last year and this year as chair of the committee.

“This year is kind of our first year really getting information out there, and

I’m excited,” she said.

Each ticket is $60, or a private table can be reserved for $400. Tickets are available in all Red Deer ATB Financial locations.

Women’s run to help local agency

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express An all female run is set to take over the River Bend Golf Course on May 10 for the Only Women’s Fitness Third Annual Fun Run. The Fun Run is a way for women to get together, celebrate each other, their health and their fitness, officials say. Funds will be raised in support of Family Services of Central Alberta (FSCA).

“We appreciate the support from our community, so whenever we have a sponsor, or a donor who comes forward and chooses us as their agency of choice, it’s great for us,” said Lisa Smith, manager of client services at FSCA. Val Jensen, the founder of the Fun Run, said she began the event as a way to celebrate women’s fitness as a lifestyle. She was an active triathlon competitor and a dance instructor for 20 years and was also a race director for Woody’s Triathlon prior to starting the Fun Run. “Fitness needs to be fun, and that’s why I started this with Only Women’s Fitness, because their facility is a fun place,” said Jensen. “The race is kept all female to create a comfortable environment for participants of all athletic abilities.”

The event features 1km, 3km, 5km and 10km stretches, with placement prizes being offered for first, second and third places in the 3km, 5km and 10km races.

“Family Services is a group that you don’t hear much about. We chose to spon-

sor them because they are an organization that encompasses everyone from toddlers to grandparents in their program. It fits with the idea of the race – encompassing all ages,” said Jensen.

The race has become an event synonymous with Mother’s Day for many of the participants. Jensen said she hopes that soon, when people in Red Deer think of Mother’s Day, their first thought is registration for the run in honour of the women in their lives.

“It’s all about spreading the love of fitness, and this event is a great way to get the community together,” said Chelsea Richer, general manager and group fitness instructor of Only Women’s Fitness.

For Family Services of Central Alberta, the event means bringing awareness to their programs. “All of our programs are prevention, or early intervention-based programs. We want to treat our families with dignity and work with them, based on their strengths, to overcome whatever challenges they are having so they are able to go off and be resilient on their own,” said Smith of FSCA. The event is open to all ages, from young girls to great-grandmothers. Jensen promotes the event as a Mother’s Day event, but also as a celebration of women, with or without their families around them.
