Lacombe researchers work to improve meat industry International scientists apply their knowledge at federal research centre

M

ost Lacombians are familiar with the federal research centre on the southeast edge of the City. However, many of them may not be familiar with exactly what kind of work is done at the facility.

Manuel Juârez, livestock phenomics scientist for the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research centre in Lacombe and one of the centre’s acting directors.

He said that the programs and projects of the research centre might actually be better known outside the country. A native of Câdiz, Spain, Juârez said he heard of the programs in Lacombe long before moving to Canada and it was actually those projects that brought him here. “The research station is more famous outside Canada sometimes.â€?

Juârez went on to say that he is not the only scientist at the centre that has come from outside the country. He said there are other researchers from Spain as well as researchers from China, Pakistan, Iran, Venezuela, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Mexico, just to name a few.

He added that many of these scientists come to Lacombe on their own dollar just to learn from researchers at the Lacombe research station.

Lacombe’s research centre is one of 18 across the country. Each one of them has its own mandate and special area of expertise.

There are two sides to the research at the Lacombe research centre, crops and meats. As the titles imply, the crops side works with agricultural crops like wheat, canola, barley and even weeds. The meats side works with raising livestock for human consumption and ways to improve that meat.

This is the side Juârez works with. Currently, he is involved in a project to optimize Canadian pork quality through a number of strategies. “We try to improve the systems so the meat industry beneďŹ ts because we can give them the tools to produce better meat. The con-

sumers beneďŹ t because they have a higher quality product, producers beneďŹ t because they have tools to be more efďŹ cient.â€?

In essence, Juârez and others involved in the project are working to improve everything about pork.

From how to raise it faster and more efďŹ ciently, to how to make it taste better, to how to make it cheaper, to how to improve its nutrition.

There are a number of ways that Juârez and fellow researchers try to do this. They look at different cooking methods, different

storage methods, different feed and rearing methods for the animals, all in attempts to increase the quality of all the parts of the animal we eat; chops, ribs and of course, bacon.

Juârez is an expert in the ďŹ eld of phenomics.

That is, he studies how living things (in the case of the optimizing pork project – pigs) are affected by both genetic and environmental inuences. As one can imagine, this ďŹ eld is very important to the study and to the industry of meat production.

The animals involved in the

study are controlled since before birth. Juârez said the animals are produced through artiďŹ cial insemination and all aspects of their raising are controlled by the research centre.

After the pigs are old enough to be butchered, researchers experiment with different ways of storing, cooking and preparing the meat. They also look at the colour, texture, marbling and other features of the meat to test its quality, said Juârez.

Researchers use the same tactics to raise, test and improve other meats as well, like mutton,

beef, bison or elk, said Juârez.

Sometimes, they purchase other animals or other meat products from other markets to compare them as well, he added.

Federal researchers are not the only ones who get to beneďŹ t from the knowledge and research at the Lacombe research centre either. Juârez said that food scientists from other organizations working in meat production, for example Cargill, come to the centre to learn about meat production, preservation and preparation methods. news@lacombeexpress.com

City to strategize in tackling Lacombe’s housing problem

At its regular meeting on April 14, Lacombe council heard from Anna Bubel of Another Way Consulting in a presentation on how the City might be able to increase its housing stock and change the status quo in Lacombe’s housing market.

“We know that these are challenging policy conversations,” said Bubel. “It means a change and people resist change, so it’s not easy.”

At the end of last November council heard Bubel’s initial report that stated Lacombe was in desperate need of increased housing stock and a greater variety of housing products. In particular, low-income housing and multifamily dwellings were scarce in Lacombe and council also

heard that the vacancy rate in Lacombe was at less than 1%.

After this had been done, the next step was to have Another Way meet with stakeholders in the community to propose possible strategies on how the City could solve these issues. Two stakeholder consultations workshops were held to devise strategy and also make several recommendations for the City to pursue in the short-term, medium-term and long-term.

These strategies seek to accomplish four outcomes. The objectives are to increase the variety of housing stock in Lacombe, improve the affordability of that housing stock, enhance the sustainability of housing and infrastructure and maintain a sense of community and ‘neighbourliness’ in Lacombe.

status quo remains, Lacombe will be outstripped by neighbouring communities growing faster, the number of people in Lacombe’s core housing need will grow, businesses may suffer when hiring if affordable housing is not available for potential workers, the City could run out of serviced land and builders may prefer to operate in centres with greater options.

There are several methods the City can use to accomplish these outcomes. Some of these include creating or promoting existing programs like home sharing, providing incentives for builders or by changing policies, practices and bylaws related to planning and development of new residential areas.

Bubel said the City and council certainly have some important and challenging decisions to make ahead. But, she added that Lacombe is not the first community to face such a problem and therefore does not need to re-invent the wheel to tackle these problems.

“Others have done this work across the country,” said Bubel. She also encouraged council to follow the example of other successful communities to accomplish the necessary goals.

Councillor Grant Harder agreed. He requested to see some examples of strategies used by other communities in order to learn from them.

“I would really like to see some successful ideas, examples from other municipalities,” said Harder. “Things that have worked and maybe even things that have not worked, because we can learn from that as well.”

Bubel said that she had already begun developing such a presentation for the stakeholder consultation workshops and would be happy to share the information with council.

Councillor Reuben Konnik did not seem too enthused with the daunting task ahead, but agreed that change was necessary.

“I think it’s a bit of an understatement when you say, ‘Challenging policy discussions await you,’ we have a hard enough time getting developers to build in Lacombe as it is,” said Konnik “I look forward to seeing where we can go with this, but, challenging is an understatement.”

Council has not decided which strategies they will adopt and which recommendations the City will follow as of yet, but in order for administration to begin exploring options, the proposed strategic plan was accepted in principal.

Conflict between hotel site prep and spring clean-up

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express There is never enough time in a day, or a year for that matter.

At its regular meeting on April 14, Lacombe City council heard that because of necessary prep work for the possibility of a new hotel being built in Lacombe near Michener Park, the City may not be able to offer its usual spring cleanup waste pick-up service.

Matthew Goudy, director of infrastructure services for the City, said because of the addition of site prep work the City agreed to perform in-land sale negotiations to the hotel group.

This adds a burden to infrastructure services’ full work schedule and it would be unlikely the City would complete that work in time to make its deadline as well as in time to offer the spring clean-up service.

“There is quite a small chance that we would be able to finish this work prior to the normal commencement of our spring clean-up,” said Goudy, adding that the equipment needed for the site preparation is the exact same equipment used in the spring clean-up.

Therefore, instead of possibly having to cancel the spring clean-up last minute, Goudy and City administration proposed hosting a drop-off event where residents could bring items that would typically be collected during spring cleanup to the infrastructure services yard where they could be unloaded and disposed of.

Council however, was not happy with the proposed

solution. Councillor Bill McQuesten was curious as to why this conflict was not foreseen when the administration agreed to do the site prep in the first place.

“It just seems a little short sighted,” said McQuesten. He added that he did not want to see the service that Lacombians expect not offered this season in any case.

However, councillors also realized they had few alternatives.

Councillor Wayne Rempel said that the community recognizes that a new hotel is desperately needed in Lacombe and that citizens would probably understand if sacrifices had to be made. “I think most people are going to understand the need for us to move forward with this development,” said Rempel.

Negotiations for the sale of the plot of land are still ongoing, and Councillor Peter Bouwsema said he had misgivings about proceeding before a deal was finalized. “I don’t want to agree to spending this money unless we are absolutely assured this property is sold.”

Councillor Grant Harder agreed. “I think that we don’t turn a wheel until there is something definitive in place,” said Harder.

Councillor Reuben Konnik said that perhaps the June 1 deadline for the preparation work needed to be re-negotiated to make it more fair for the City and allow more time for the work to be completed.

He added that, while proceeding with this development is important, the City should not be bending to every will of the possible

“There seems to be a lot of dictating from one side,” said Konnik. “They seem to be a little one-sided, these discussions with this particular development. I realize how important it is but I would certainly like to see a little bit longer time.”

When council could not reach a decision, a vote was taken to take the matter in-camera. After the meeting had concluded, Mayor Steve Christie said that after going in-camera, council had agreed to begin preparation work for the site before a sale had completed, but are currently exploring other options, such as contracting some of the work out or delaying the spring clean-up in order to have the prep work completed by the deadline and still be able to offer the clean-up service to residents. Christie added he hopes to see a signed sale agreement by the end of this week or early next week.

Council hears plan to swap signalization for roundabout

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express On April 14th, Lacombe City council heard a presentation from local resident Carolyn Cave exploring the possibility of installing a roundabout as a trafďŹ c measure at the intersection of 50 St. and 54 Ave. rather than the current plan of signalization.

Cave said that while she does believe some form of trafďŹ c control is necessary at this intersection, she feels that a roundabout is far more suitable. “I do believe that if a roundabout was installed at that intersection, Lacombe would be a leader in this area and would demonstrate progressive thinking to solving trafďŹ c issues.â€?

In Alberta, said Cave, there is a tendency to believe that roundabouts have to be quite large and that deters many municipalities from utilizing them. Cave added that she and her family are all citizens of Australia where roundabouts are quite commonplace. She also said there are many different styles.

Cave then shared some calculations with council on how a roundabout with a centre concrete dome measuring 8.7m in diameter could be installed, leaving 4m around the outside of the dome to form a roundabout. She also said that this was more than adequate distance for trafďŹ c ow.

To allow for larger vehicles, such as emergency vehicles, to easily navigate the roundabout, Cave said the dome could be

made of semi-mountable pavement. To increase pedestrian safety, visibility and make it easier for pedestrians to cross, the crosswalks for the intersections would also be set back from the roundabout.

Cave also spoke about the advantages of roundabouts, saying they reduce or eliminate the risk of head-on collisions, allow trafďŹ c to keep owing even when the intersection is controlled and even allows for uturns to be made easily at the intersection.

Councillor Peter Bouwsema said he found the presentation valuable and added he would like to see if the measurements truly are workable for a trafďŹ c circle at that location. “It’s one thing if a passenger vehicle uses that roundabout, but school buses have to use it and probably larger vehicles,â€? said Bouwsema. “Would that be an acceptable option for them as well?â€?

Director of Infrastructure Matthew Goudy said a plan for a roundabout at that intersection had been looked at in the Transportation Master Plan, but was scrapped in favour of signalization because of costs associated with acquiring necessary additional property.

Goudy also said that it is difďŹ cult to ďŹ t a roundabout into an existing intersection and they are suited to new-build intersections. The general consensus of council was to research the plan as well as other alternatives. Council voted to receive the presentation as information and refer it to administration for additional information.

OPINION Bill C-23 a waste Bill C-23 is bad for democracy and bad for Canada.

That from Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who last week pledged that he would repeal Bill C-23, dubbed the Fair Elections Act, should it become law and should his party form government after next year’s election.

Trudeau is not the first to criticize the bill, and lately the NDP has been vocal in their criticism of it as well, frequently bringing the topic up in Question Period. Bill C-23 proposes a number of changes to how elections will run in Canada, most contested among them being making it impossible for ‘vouching’ votes and making it more difficult to provide sufficient identification to vote.

This new piece of legislation is frustrating for a number of reasons. First of all, is there nothing more important the government could be doing?

It’s hard to believe a bill making it more difficult to

commit voter fraud is necessary when voter apathy is a problem with elections at every level. Why do we need to make it more difficult for people to vote illegally when they aren’t voting in the first place?

Not only that, some of the changes are pointless and won’t have any beneficial effects. For example, while eliminating vouching would be a nuisance for some, of the nearly 12.5 million voters in the 2011 federal election only 120,000 or so voters were vouched for.

So, it would seem eliminating vouching wouldn’t have that much of an effect in the long run anyway.

Pierre Poilievre, the man behind Bill C-23, has said in addition to making voter fraud more difficult, it reins in Elections Canada who have failed to boost voter turnout.

This kind of backwards strategy begs the question, what is the real reasoning for the Conservatives implementing this bill. Do

Our Town represents a future of community pride and achievement coupled with an exceptional rate of growth – 2009 - 5,600; 2013 - 7,200 and with our population trending towards 10,000 within a few years. Growth is important to any community and demonstrates an expansion of our social and economic base while addressing our residents’ daily needs and wants.

These can range from commercial retail and service choices through to education and recreational needs. For the last 15 years, our Town council has been planning for and guiding the trend of change

through various plans and studies and have resulted in the Municipal Sustainability Plan (MSP). The MSP is intended to be a reflection of residents’ needs and guides the strategies of the Town in turn meeting the needs of residents, infrastructure development and service requirements. As a result of the success of participation by residents in the MSP process in 2009, council is ready to update the MSP and is once again seeking public participation in the process.

Sustainability is ‘meeting the needs of the present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. As a resident of or visitor, what is your perspective about Blackfalds future sustainability and what does this mean to you?

Within council’s planning context, there are five key elements considered in relationship to current and long-range planning (e.g. year 2040). These five key elements are governance, culture, social, economy and environment.

Governance relates to policy making and leadership within council. It has to do with planning and management of resources, planning for a sustainable future

(such as by developing a sustainability plan) and managing growth.

It also involves working on initiatives with other municipalities and governments.

Culture has to do with creating a community identity and works with the recreational and cultural aspects of the community. It also relates to managing the diversity of the community.

Social works with social community programs and services like emergency services, FCSS, education and health. It also involves communications, both internal and external, to make sure everyone these programs and services effect know what is going on.

Economy of course relates to the growth of Blackfalds’ commercial and industrial sectors. It also has to do with tourism and the communities financial well-being.

Finally, environment relates to land use, in all sectors. It is also connected to beautification of the community as well of the use and development of parks, green space and other open areas the community can enjoy.

The Town’s goals exist in two categories - Town controlled and nonTown controlled. With non-town

controlled goals, other agencies, stakeholders or governments control how, when and where a decision is made. Education, a regional sewage line , health services, and provincial roadway upgrades fall into this category.

Town controlled goals are ones where the Town of Blackfalds can makes its own decision to proceed as long as it has the right resources. Bylaws, polices, facilities, emergency and protective services are some of the goals that fall under this category.

Writer disagrees with columnist’s opinion on euthanasia Now it is the Lacombe Express that has missed editing a piece of ‘hate propaganda’ in their latest issue. And yes, that’s on my mind right now. Where is this going to go?

Are those editors sleeping?

This time I’ll not refrain from naming names, I think.

The title of the offending piece is ‘Taking a look at the ‘end of life’ debate’ and ran in the March 27 edition of the Lacombe Express. It should have been titled ‘mad as hell’.

Yes, not a very pretty concept. But I say that because a ‘debate’ on a certain subject it is definitively not.

Let me assure you that I have a high regard for the medical profession.

And I do not personally know this Dr.

Jones. But in the article mentioned above his professionalism takes a severe tumble, not only as a member of the medical profession, but also as a medical journalist.

The main thrust of the article is ‘freedom of choice in death.’ Keep that in mind.

Dr. Jones has joined Dignitas, the Swiss death club.

Some day he will travel there to take his last breath (although he says also he hopes to never use this privilege). Then what?

Will he live forever? No, by that time he fervently hopes this ‘privilege’ is available in Canada.

With an unprofessional swipe at our government and our Charter of Rights and Freedoms this mad as hell medic turns on all the people that might not agree with

him in an extremely unprofessional manner.

He boldly claims that they use ‘asinine reasons’ in opposing him, not only, but they do so knowing full well that what they say is ‘a blatant lie’. How close is this coming to hate speech?

As I said before, I do not know this Dr. Jones. Is he indeed a member of the medical profession, as I assumed?

Maybe not, it does not matter very much.

He is (or was in 1984, how intriguing) a professor of something. He is a fellow human being, sadly burdened with a twisted moral code.

This becomes very evident when he asserts that he has no problem with his opponents. But he has! He claims that they have

his ‘blessing’ (yeah, blessing!) if they prefer to suffer unbearably towards the end of their lives as long as they like. And this is an attitude of compassion and concern?

Of tender mercies for the sick?

Yet Dr. Jones’ chief concern is the injustice to the poor (so he says). To those who at the obvious ending of their lives cannot afford a one-way ticket to Switzerland and must die here in Canada the old-fashioned way.

I will leave the actual debate to others.

The issue is - respect for life - or consent for murder. And end of life (a euphemism if there ever was one) or assisted suicide.

Writer recalls childhood Reader sounds off on Fair Elections Act heroic calling The Lone Ranger and my dad were my two heroes when I was in Grade 1 in Edmonton.

The William Tell Overture was the music that accompanied my imagination in the vivid scenes of the Lone Ranger, Tonto and myself riding horseback through the Mesquite Hills in pursuit of the bad guys.

Although I could not have expressed it in precise philosophical terms at the time, I do recall a general sense of purpose or mission in these phantasmagoric adventures.

My dad was a penitentiary officer who in my youthful worldview provided security, stability and comfort to my family and my neighbourhood.

On a snowy day in early winter, I was halfway home from school when I witnessed a small-scale criminal event.

Two older kids were roughing up a younger and much smaller boy in a red snowsuit. I recognized the victim as a class-

mate and immediately heard the William Tell Overture.

This was my first call to duty and backup was not available.

WWTLRD? I did remember that my black-and-white training films courtesy of The Lone Ranger TV show consistently demonstrated that offense was the best defence so I mounted up and attacked without plan or skill. As I charged towards them, the bullies must have decided that getting home in time for supper was more important than taking on this robust and obviously dedicated defender of the oppressed.

A few things became entrenched in my psyche that day. Number one – odds are less relevant than they appear to be. Number two – if you must fight, fight for a cause.

Number three – how you act defines who you are.

Concerns about lack of cycling knowledge While out enjoying our beautiful spring weather (at last) on my bicycle, I was reminded of how little many drivers know or understand cyclists and the rules of the road as they pertain to bicycles.

Specifically, a bicycle is a vehicle, not a pedestrian! (I am not meaning young children riding on the sidewalks, or people who are dismounted and walking their bikes, but adult riders on the roads.)

For example, when a cyclist is stopped at a stop sign, do not stop for him on your through road.

Yielding right of way improperly creates dangerous situations for all concerned.

Yes, drivers must be aware of cyclist’s greater maneuverability, but lower speed capability, and should give some room when passing, but a car which stays behind the cyclist is more dangerous than one passing properly.

If drivers (and cyclists) just remember and follow the regular rules of the road, everyone will be safer.

Several news items about the Quebec election in regards to number of people being denied their right to vote and Robert Fife’s interview with Minister Pierre Poilievre and then Tom Clark’s interview with Mr. Poilievre have raised some questions.

We have a right to vote, and many feel as I do an obligation to vote, not as some will say; it is only a privilege to vote.

The Quebec election disenfranchising of voters appears skewed against Anglophones and Allophones who historically are less likely to vote for the current governing party, Parti Quebecois.

Minister Poilievre is ramming through Parliament a bill called the ‘Fair Elections Act’ that seems to be anything but fair and could disenfranchise (a reported) 520,000 voters in somewhat similar fashion as the current Quebec election.

Opposition parties are against this bill, as expected, but so are returning officers, past and present.

Provincial, federal, national, international, academics, watch dogs, democracy societies and political advocates have all come out against this bill. The 520,000 disenfranchised voters will come about from the end of vouching and the end of voting cards used for ID. These voters by the way historically do not vote Conservative.

The bill will see the incumbent party pick the deputy returning officer, the returning officer and the poll supervisors, so the deck will be stacked against non-incumbent voters.

This bill prevents Elections Canada from encouraging voters, this bill will not mandate testimony, this bill as it stands favours the

Conservatives and is being presented as something that it is not with the arrogant and patronizing manner to be expected from a dictatorship in a third world country.

This bill contains measures you will not find in developing democracies. This bill will lower our standing in the democratic societies. Robert Fife of CTV and Tom Clark of Global TV made the arguments that everyone is against this bill except some Conservatives.

They ask how a party can bring forward a bill that affects our democratic rights, that diminishes our democracy without consulting the opposition, the experts, the public, and the history books?

How can they ram it through with imposed deadlines and time allocations when it trifles with the very basis of our democracy? My hope is there are enough members on the committee who are not party loyalists but are true believers in our democracy, who will listen to the witnesses, the experts, the often misquoted and misconstrued authors of authoritative reports, to make the amendments and recommendations to uphold our basic democratic rights.

Will there be enough members of parliament who can see through their party’s lenses and give this bill the scrutiny it deserves and have the strength to vote against it, if that is what it truly deserves?

I often wonder what kind of personal convictions MPs have if any?

Will the Upper House give it the second thought it may need? Will the Senate give it independent study or will it toe the party line as dictated by the PMO and Pierre Poilievre?

The Quebec election is an eye-

opener, throw in revelations about Alberta’s former Premier and toss in Senate and federal scandals and you are less likely to feel like voting, unless you are a hard-core party member or a political junkie.

When a governing party sits at 28% in the polls and the third place party is gaining momentum towards 40% and majority territory, it forces the Conservatives to take drastic actions to make it harder to lose the next election.

They ignore ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people’ and they concentrate on ‘whatever it takes to win’. They forgot about governing as they were elected to do, and concentrated on partisan politics. They have forgotten their responsibilities but are only interested in the perks and privileges of being in power.

If this bill passes, unamended, and if the actions in Quebec are any indication, how many of us will be kept from voting in the next federal election? Will our member of parliament represent us in this matter or the PMO? Will our MP listen to the experts or to Poilievre? Will our senators investigate the issues and accusations or rubber stamp the bill?

This goes beyond keeping Mr. Harper in office, this goes beyond cheap partisan politics and this goes beyond the perks and privileges of being in power.

Talk with us and we can correct mistakes and find solutions and prevent subversion of our democratic process and keep what is happening in Quebec from reoccurring or happening here.

How long should it really take to learn?

As any proud grandparent would do, I dote over my grandchildren. I brag about what they can do and am amazed by some of the comical statements that come out of their mouths.

But I also notice that they have certain characteristics and habits that their parents did not teach them and I certainly didn’t.

Take the occasion when our five-year-old and twoyear-old grandchildren accidentally collided while running in the house. They ended up on the floor, a few tears were shed and then the two-year-old got up and wacked the five-yearold right in the face. How did he learn that at such a young age?

If children can learn those habits so quickly without being taught, how is it that most of us take so long to learn the really valuable lessons.

Prior to World War II, the German people and the nations around them idly watched, allowing a tyrant like Hitler to arm his country for war. When the dust had settled after the Second

When will we ever learn that aggression of one nation against another carries too high a price?

We as average citizens can wring our hands and say, “We have learned that lesson, but what can we do?” And that seems to be true. What can one average person do about aggression in the Crimea?

But there is an equally important lesson that every person can learn, which may not directly affect international affairs, but which can make the world in which you live a better place. That lesson is learning to love God and love our fellowman.

When Jesus Christ was on earth, he was asked,

“What commandment is the most important?” He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength and the second is this - love your neighbour as yourself.”

It didn’t take me many years of life to learn that I was hopelessly unable to obey the two commands God tells me are the most important. I found that any attempt on my part to please God in regard to His commands was counteracted by this confounded drive inside me to tell God to leave me alone. My plans and ambitions were much too important to ruin by trying to please God. It was only in a situation of desperation, when I faced my sin head on, and looked at the consequences of my sin, that I was willing to tell God, “I’m desperate – I can’t do life on my own; please forgive me. I am now willing to adopt Your plans for my life and surrender my selfish ambitions.”

Since that day, when my life was completely turned around, I have been learning that what I was unable to do, and really didn’t want to do - love God, and love my neighbour, through God’s strength I am now able to do. What a liberating discovery - what God wants of me is what God gives me the strength to do. Paul, the apostle

faced incredible challenges in his life as he sought to live his life in obedience to God. Some Jews hated Paul so much that they vowed to put him to death.

Eight times he was beaten for preaching about Jesus Christ. How did he face those difficult experiences in life? He said, “I am able to do all things through God who strengthens me.”

If Paul through the power of God could face those challenges and continue to love God and others, then God is also able to give you the power to live a life filled with love for Him and the people who live in your world. This is the most important lesson any of us could ever learn.

Forget cholesterol - how’s your mitochondria?

“You’re so like your mother, you have so much energy!” friends have said to me. I admit energy-wise they’re right. My father preferred to sit in his chair analyzing mathematical problems, while mother was high-octane gas. She never stopped running around. But I didn’t know why I inherited her energy until I read a report in the Nutrition Action Health Letter about mitochondria.

So, here’s how you can increase your energy level.

It’s said that precious things come in small packages, and there’s no better example than mitochondria. Each cell in our body contains up to 2,000 mitochondria and, although tiny, they make up to 60% of the volume of muscle cells and 40% of heart cells.

Simon Melov, director of the Genomics Core at the Buck Institute for Age Research in California, reports that “Mitochondria are the power plants of our cells, tiny furnaces within the cells of our body that burn food for energy.”

But why am I so like my mother?

JONES have their own genetic material. But unlike the DNA in the cell’s nucleus, which comes from both parents, mitochondria DNA is passed down from mother.

This is also why I have the chance of living into my 90s, as did my mother.

Tory Hagen, a researcher at the Linus Pauling Institute Corvallis, Oregon, says, “Mitochondria have been called the Achilles’ heel of the cells in aging.”

The healthier the mitochondria the longer the life.

These tiny mitochondria furnaces are continually using oxygen to burn fat, protein and carbohydrates to generate energy. This oxidation process results in the formation of free radicals, the metabolic ash that may also damage mitochondria.

Mark Mattson, chief of

the Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience Section at The National Institute of Health, says weakened mitochondria may leave people susceptible to Parkinson’s Disease or accelerate the downward trend of Alzheimer’s Disease.

So how can you increase the number of mitochondria? First, never forget the importance of exercise.

David Hood, a researcher at York University, says exercise can increase the number of mitochondria by 40 to 50% in six weeks.

In 2002, Dr. Bruce Ames, a researcher at the University of California, and his colleague Tory Hagan, made international headlines. They reported that old, sedentary rats (roughly equal to humans aged 70 to 100 years) perked up and danced the Macarena after being fed carnitine and lipoic acid. Lipoic acid is an antioxidant, and according to Hagen carnitine pushes fat into mitochondria and gives a boost to their activity.

I asked Dr. Andrew Weil, professor of integrative medicine at the University of Arizona, if this study made any sense. Weil is an internationally-recognized expert on alternative medicine. He’s traveled widely to study medicinal plants in South America and Africa and has been a major proponent of omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D and health benefits of fruits, vegetables and fish. He says that Juvenon is a remarkable health supplement and takes it daily. But he neglects to say whether if makes him dance the Macarena!

SPORTS Rams Rugby readies for season start

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express With the snow finally beginning to disappear, the Rams Girls Rugby team is eager to get on the field. Coach Jay Whitehead said the team has been practicing indoors for a few months now and hopes the long winter will pass soon so the competitive season can start in earnest.

Usually, the season runs from whenever the snow leaves to the end of May. In the past, that has given time for about six weeks of playing rugby, said Whitehead.

However, the past few years there has only been time for about four weeks.

“Due to the snow hanging around, it’s been a bit shorter.”

The Rams play in the Central Alberta High School Rugby League which includes teams from Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House, Rimbey, Olds and Lacombe.

This year, the team has a nice mix of veterans and rookies, with slightly more

numbers on the veteran end. Whitehead said the new players are developing well.

“I’ve been impressed so far with the new girls.” He added the more experienced players on the team have done a fantastic job of mentoring the younger ones and bringing them up to speed.

Madison Webb, a third-year veteran on the team, also said the team is improving and the younger players are developing well. “I think it’s looking good so far,” said Webb. “Even since we started practicing in the gym, there have been improvements.”

Whitehead agreed.

“I think it’s like any other season, they are getting the concepts down pretty quickly.” He added that, no matter how well the team performs in practice, the first game is always difficult and so he hopes to have an exhibition game, slated for April 29, before the season actually starts.

“They forget everything they have been learning over six weeks,” said Whitehead.

He added that it will be the Rams’ second

game where they will actually be playing truer to their skill level.

“You never know how the first game is going to be until you play it,” added Webb.

Whitehead said so far, the team’s strengths seem to be speed, rucking and passing.

On the other hand, he said aggression is one trait the girls will really have to develop to be successful.

“I think that is probably where we have been weak the last year or so,” said Whitehead.

Overall though, the team gets along well and works well as a cohesive unit.

This is Whitehead’s fifth year coaching and the team’s fifth year in existence. He has been able to watch the team develop over the last few seasons and said he believes they are still the newest team in the league after five years.

Whitehead said the team has improved greatly going from no wins the first year, to having a few wins in later years to just

missing a shot at provincials last season.

He added this kind of record is about what you would expect from a brand new team.

“The first few years are always kind of teaching them and getting the basics.”

He added he believes the team is now at a point where they have the fundamentals and can focus more on playing a higher competitive game.

Webb added the team’s cohesiveness is one of its biggest strengths and that also has improved with each season.

“I think we just come together more as a team each year,” said Webb. She added that Whitehead is good at introducing more aspects of the sport to the team each year to expand their knowledge of rugby.

This year, Whitehead and the rest of the team hope to build on last year’s successes and make it to the league final again.

Whitehead added if they can progress to provincials as well, that would be an impressive goal.

Local Special Olympics club promotes community

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express For Dwayne Campbell, chair of the Lacombe and District Special Olympics branch, Special Olympics is about building community and social ties.

Campbell first got involved with Special Olympics because of his son, Warren, who is a Special Olympian. Warren was swimming with the group in Red Deer because there was no club in Lacombe at the time. When Dwayne heard there was a group looking to start one in 2005, he got involved to help bring the program to Lacombe.

Dwayne said that Special Olympics is an important part of his son’s social life, as it is for many of the athletes, so it was great to bring the program closer to home.

“It’s kind of their community,” said Dwayne.

In fact, Dwayne said that to him, the most important part of Special Olympics, at least in Lacombe, is to develop and provide a social community for those involved. He added that this is somewhat in contrast with the key beliefs of Special Olympics Alberta, whose official mandate is to enrich the lives of Albertans with intellectual disabilities through sport.

“I’m not against the provincial program,” said Dwayne.

“But at the same time I think the biggest part of this is the social opportunity, to be with friends and have fun and meet new

Dwayne went on to say that Special Olympics in general is geared towards producing competitive athletes. While that is good, it’s important that the athletes have fun too. “Our focus here is the community.”

Lacombe and District Special Olympics has 40

athletes and about 25% of them are from outside the City. Those athletes participate in either bowling, swimming, softball or a combination thereof.

alternative to the club’s other summer sport, softball.

In each sport there is a core group of athletes that are a little more on the competitive side and partake in tournaments.

Others still compete, but more in a kind of recreational league setting, said Dwayne. For example, with its bowling team, the most popular sport it offers, Lacombe & District Special Olympics generally takes about 20 of its 36 bowlers to

tournaments in Red Deer and Olds.

In addition to being a parent and chair, Dwayne is also coach of the softball team within the program.

He said that the important things to remember when coaching Special Olympics are patience, the need for visual instruction and increased need for safety.

“You don’t want to get anybody hurt, you don’t want to get anybody discouraged,” said Dwayne.

Dwayne went on to say that, he enjoys coaching the team and continues to do so because of the friendships made through the program

and not just because his son is involved in it.

“They bring you into their lives, they consider you as a friend,” said Dwayne. “For me, that’s a big part of it.”

Next week on April 29, Lacombe and District Special Olympics will wrap up the winter half of its season with its awards night.

The club is also always looking for more coaches and volunteers to help with the program, said Dwayne.

ARTS & LEISURE ZAP! Theatre returns with biggest production yet

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express ZAP! Theatre, the group that brought you last year’s hit, Jitterbug Juliet, is gearing up for their next production, The 3 ½ Musketeers, which opens next month.

Daniel Allers, general manager for ZAP! Theatre, said the group is glad to be putting on anther show for the benefit of the Christian Life Orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania.

“It’s good to be doing it for a reason,” said Allers. “It’s always nice to act but it’s great to act for a purpose.”

Allers described The 3 ½ Musketeers as a complete comedic retelling of the classic story by Alexandre Dumas. As usual for ZAP! Theatre productions, the play is also a musical and is family-friendly. Of course, the story is full of sword fighting as well as singing and Allers said it will feature live steel combat sequences on stage.

“It’s full of great costumes, great songs and great action.”

It is also the most prominent production ZAP! has ever taken on, said Allers. He explained the group had to apply and receive permission to perform the show instead of simply paying royalties as has been the case with previous shows.

“It’s a huge production,” said Allers. “We’re really excited.”

ZAP! has been rehearsing for the production since the beginning of January. He added that it has been a lot of work to produce this show in the short timeframe that ZAP! operates in, but all involved have risen to the challenge and are looking forward to the production.

The effort the cast has put into the show sends a stronger message when one remembers that all of them are donating their time. ZAP! productions use all proceeds from their shows to benefit the Christian Life Orphanage and so not only do the actors not get paid, the costs associating

“It’s quite the investment both in time and money for young adults to commit to,” said Allers. “But everyone loves acting and loves the opportunity to make a difference on the other side of the world.”

He added that there is a social aspect to ZAP! and he stays involved with the productions to keep those ties intact as well as do something he loves. However, he said it is great to be able to do some good in the world at the same time.

“The best thing you can do is help people in need and there’s no better way to do it than while doing something you love,” said Allers.

The 3 ½ Musketeers begins with the diminutive Darth Canyon being sent out from his farm in Gascony, France to become a musketeer in Paris. Along the way, he meets and picks a fight with the famous trio the Thee Musketeers. But, when the foursome is set upon by the evil Richelieu’s men, they team up to fight them off together and quickly become

friends, going on to save France from certain disaster at Richelieu’s hand.

Last year, ZAP! raised more than $10,000 with its production of Jitterbug Juliet. That money went towards building dormitories for the Christian Life Orphanage.

Allers said that while the structure of the orphanage itself is now finished, logistical problems prevented the boys from moving into their new home before Christmas as planned. Most of these problems have been worked

through now, Allers added, and the boys should be settled in before a visit is made to the orphanage this June.

Encore Art gets set to feature ‘Art and the Motorcycle’

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express With spring finally arriving in Lacombe, it is time once again for the annual Encore Art Show and Sale in support of the Lacombe Arts Endowment Fund.

Organizer Maureen MacKenzie said the event began 15 years ago and was the brainchild of local artist Wayne Spink, the man behind the beautiful glass etchings in the Lacombe Memorial Centre and City Hall, and the Lacombe Art Club.

‘THE WHOLE IDEA IS TO HAVE PEOPLE THINKING BEYOND PAINT ON A CANVAS.’ MAUREEN MACKENZIE At the beginning, the sale was quite small, and has grown quite a bit over the years.

This year’s show and sale features 28 booths and 19 gallery artists. It also features a number of demonstrations by many of the artists, many of whom are known internationally for their work, said MacKenzie.

“It’s a chance to see some world class art,” said MacKenzie.

People come from all over the province and sometimes outside of it to see the show each year, said MacKenzie.

On average, 1,500 to 1,800 will flock to the Lacombe Memorial Centre for the event and this year organizers are actually hop-

ing to get as many as 2,300 attending.

“We’ve had them as far away as Grande Prairie.”

This year’s show features only Alberta artists.

MacKenzie said that in the past, they have come from elsewhere in western Canada as well. She added that she tries to mix up the type of art displayed each year.

“Each year I try to source new artists,” she said.

“So, every year, it’s not the same artists over and over again. We have fresh faces, fresh art for people to see.”

MacKenzie has been organizing the event since 2010. She said that the artists involved have shared with other artists how successful their experiences were at the show.

Art lovers who frequent the event have also passed on their feelings about the variety of art, helping the show and sale to grow.

Encore is the brand name for any event that support the City’s Arts Endowment Fund.

All of the events encompassed within the annual Art Show and Sale are part of Encore, including Art and the Motorcycle, this year’s show and sale gala event.

Since she took over as the organizing head for the Encore Art Show and Sale, MacKenzie has tried each year to feature a style that is a little more obscure perhaps than what people generally tend to think of as art.

Last year’s gala was a fashion show entitled ‘Art of the Corset’ and it was one

such example and this year’s gala, featuring the artwork on motorcycles, is just as different.

“The whole idea is to have people thinking beyond paint on a canvas.”

This part of the Encore Art Show and Sale is an effort to appeal to a broader scope of art enthusiasts, she said.

“We don’t want to be doing what everyone else is doing,” said MacKenzie.

“We want Lacombe to be known for cultural events that are different, that are of a broader scope, than what other places are doing and that are really interesting.

“I think with some of the things we are doing, we are appealing to a younger crowd

as well.”

MacKenzie wanted to thank the event’s sponsors, particularly Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson, for supporting the Art and the Motorcycle. She said the event would not be possible without them.

Lacombe’s annual Art Show and Sale takes place April 25-27 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

Tickets for the Art of the Motorcycle gala are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Stylish retro-inspired home design is back Design is always evolving, it is amazing that we can get away with re-decorating only every five to 10 years but even older dated homes still manage to look cozy and stylish. My personal design style has not changed much over the years and I still hold true to my favorite colours – I always manage to use green in every house I decorate even though the shade and undertones may vary.

True to design evolution, I started seeing styles be recycled around my 15th anniversary of being an interior designer and I sometimes have to put my own opinions aside to allow retro-inspired designs to happen. One trend that is coming on strong is white based tile/countertops with varying shades of marbling through it. This look is very 1979 and reminds me of my house growing up. Do you remember the moulded ‘marble’ sinks?

(Some of you may still have them with the shell shaped sinks!) I remember my mom painstakingly choosing just the right tone for the marble swirl that was to go through her countertop; it was the ultimate in customization.

This look is strong, we have several tiles and countertop manufacturers that are replicating this swirled look but I don’t think the moulded shell sinks will make a comeback. For people who don’t appreciate the linear, contemporary look this might satisfy that more traditional part of you. I fight against it and have to remember that it is not me but my client who will be showering in this every morning and if they love it, I can make it beautiful for them.

Polished bronze is also pushing its way into design books and web sites and although we haven’t transitioned back to full on light fixtures and bathroom faucets it is still a trend to consider. Because it is such an undecided

trend, it is advisable to use it in small doses such as an accessory piece or lamp just in case it goes out of fashion again. When brass went out of vogue it was not just unpopular but became an ugly four letter word which caused designers to sneer and say ‘oh you have BRASS in your house’ – it was a complete outcast.

Subway tiles are another retroinspired look that is a solid design choice for both contemporary and traditional interiors and it is always the perfect look. If you are more contemporary you can modify this choice and put in a longer plank (4”x12” or 6”x24”) but the traditional 3”x 6” subway is classic and always appropriate. Hexagon shapes in a small format mosaic are becoming

available in more natural stone, stainless steel and the traditional glazed tile making them a stylish solution for shower bases, back splashes and floors.

Maybe there is a little past in your decorating future, perhaps like me you need to open up and embrace the possibilities of design elements you may have long put to rest.

Maybe that chenille bedspread you have tucked away in your closet will make a stylish reappearance; I remember an auntie of mine having a knobby chenille housecoat and I’ve been on the lookout for that same robe most of my adult life.
