You won’t want to miss the fifth annual Garden Festival in Castlegar.

The Castlegar Garden Club and Castlegar Communities in Bloom partner to sponsor this open-air fest that attracts vendors from the Kootenay region: metal garden art, bee keeping supplies, concrete bird baths, cupcakes, seeds, recycling programs, compost bin pick up, and great food!

Local plant vendors will celebrate growing with all things GARDEN: perennials, shrubs, ornamental grasses, herbs; as well as wide selection of garden-ready veggie starts are available for sale.

The Garden Fest is a way to encourage and expose people to nature and growing: which is always a good thing. Organizers say they still have room for more vendors: Cost of a booth is $30 for vendors, and free to non-profits.

Quick acting residents likely saved a life

The quick thinking action of some local residents likely saved a man’s life.

On April 13, at approximately 10:25 pm, Castlegar RCMP, along with the Pass Creek and Castlegar Fire departments responded to a single vehicle accident at the 1700 block of Pass Creek Road.

The vehicle had gone off the road and rolled down the hill and had stopped upside down in the creek.

Local residents were on the scene quickly and when they went to assist the lone occupant, they found him trapped and had to help him hold his head above the water and offer comfort until he could be rescued.

Police officers entered the water as well, and were able to cut the male’s seatbelt.

cut the man out of the truck.

The male, a 46-year-old Castlegar man, was taken to Trail hospital with serious injuries and remains in the intensive care unit.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening, however, alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this accident.

Police continue its investigation and are asking any witnesses, or any other persons that assisted in this rescue whom have not been spoken to by police as of yet to contact the Castlegar RCMP detachment at (250) 365-7221.

“Police would also like to thank those bystanders who, without hesitation, went into the very frigid creek to assist this victim pending the arrival of the Police and Fire departments,” Sgt Laurel Mathew. “Their actions very well may have saved this man’s life.”

Spirit Square in Castlegar at noon on Tuesday April 15 was a colourful display of the strength to overcome violence and a chance to display the emotions and proclamations of survivors and those that know them in art on t-shirts.

The event was organized by the Castlegar & District Community Services Society.

“The Clothesline Proj-

ect is a powerful display of t-shirts with messages and graphics that have been designed by, or made in honour of women and children who have experienced abuse…a testimony to the issue of violence and the strength to survive,” said one of the organizers.

The event was well attended with barbecued hotdogs, drinks and of course colourful t-shirts which flew like flags in the strong noon wind that day. Their messages painted across their

chests spoke to the testimony of experience and hope.

A drum group, called Wakun, which means Grandmother, entertained attendees with strong rhythms and messages. The four person troupe include Castlegar Fire Chief Gerry Rempel, leader Shemmaho Goodenough, Jessica McLeod and Geri-lynn Rempel.

“We need to work together as Canadians, as people of the earth to pay attention to the knowledge of our ances-

tors and the wisdom of our old people” said Shemmaho Goodenough. “We want to build communities with all Canadians and inspire people to work together to take care of the children. Grandmothers are very practical. They are someone you trust, someone you can go to, someone you look up to.

They definitely do not have to be biological.”

The messages were clear at Spirit Square that day visually, orally and rhythmically.

Planning and hard work pay off as Community Foundation launched Betsy Kline Castlegar News

Several years of planning and hard work culminated Thursday evening with the official launch of the Community Foundation of Castlegar and District.

Having been provincially incorporated and having received Charitable Status from Revenue Canada, the new foundation is now in the position to accept donations and grant applications.

Foundation President Bob Jackson addressed the crowd that gathered for the event.

“In the long term, the foundation should become a reliable source of funding for community

projects,” he said.

“We will give sympathetic consideration to applications that fit within our broad mandate to support social programs, education, programs for the needy, amateur sports and recreation, arts and culture, historical and environmental preservation and other projects that generally contribute to the well-being of Castlegar and areas I and J. “In short, we want to promote what is commonly known as a healthy community. The Community foundation is based in the community it serves. So our priorities are in this community.

unteers who live or work in the area and are sensitive to its needs.”

Initial funding for the foundation came through donations from Kootenay Savings Credit Union, the BC Seniors Games and Castlegar United Way. Kootenay Savings CEO Brent Trem-

blay was on hand for the launch. After explaining the history behind the company’s $157,000 donation he stated, “We are absolutely thrilled to see it up and running.

We believe it fits our social responsibility mandate to be active in our communities.

Local community foundations can real-

ly do a lot of things.”

Members of the Board of directors are Brian Miller, Roberta Hamilton, Craig McFadden, Nicole Beetstra, Chris Bell, Caroline Kavaloff, Tammy Verigin-Burk and Cord LaFond.

The foundation would like to give everyone an opportunity to contribute to community health through regular donations, life insurance donations and bequests, individual donations, the offering of expertise or by volunteering.

Donations of any size are welcome.

The foundation has an opportunity to receive a matching grant from Columbia Basin Trust if they can raise between $25,000 and $50,000 within the community.

Fraser Institute reports not worth the paper The Fraser Institute’s report on schools always draws criticisms from educators and kudos from the public.

We can’t help but wonder why?

Let’s first set the record straight - the Fraser Institute reports aren’t worth the paper they are printed on when it comes to judging the performance of schools again each other.

In reality that comparison is impossible. It would be like comparing the quality of life in Vancouver’s Point Grey to that of Alert Bay on Vancouver Island. You simply can’t compare them on any level.

However, what the education system seems to miss, and has for many, many years, is the public desires a better system of accountability from its educators.

Sadly, this is where the BCTF continues to fail not only its members, but also the public at large.

Why can’t we have a public debate about the quality of our teachers and our schools? Given what we hear from parents, we suspect that report card would be a good one on so many levels.

Like most people, we believe we are lucky to have our system of education, which includes teachers and administrators. But we also question things that seem out of line with the current realities of society, especially from an economic perspective.

We agree that the Fraser Institute reports really have no place in judging our education system, but we also suspect those reports would go away if our educators and teacher came up with a legtimate and appropriate way to give the public a true report on how our schools are really doing.

We want to hear from you.

A look at Nordic Noir mystery novels As a reader, it’s interesting to move into new areas of fiction. You can get into a rut and end up reading only American “hard-boiled” detective fiction, from novels like The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler to the latest

by Michael Connelly and Lee Child. A change in reading material is often a good thing.

Recently, I’ve been reading Nordic Noir novels. These are mystery novels from Scandinavia with a decidedly dark side to them. What I’ve discovered is that these northern European countries produce an abundance of good writing in the mystery thriller and police procedural types of writing.

I’ve always been interested in mystery writing, and about 15 years ago, I read several novels by a strange pair of writing-collaborators known as Sjowall and Wahloo. During the 1960s and 1970s, they wrote 10 police procedural novels about special homicide detectives from the Swedish national police.

During the writing, each wrote alternate chapters until the book found its way through the crime scene and the perpetrators were caught.

Perhaps the best known Nordic Noir author from the late 20th century was Henning Mankell. His main character, Kurt Wallander, is featured in at least nine novels beginning with the Faceless Killers in 1991. Inspector WalCindy Amaral Production Manager

lander has few close friends, consumes too much alcohol and junk food, and struggles to control his anger. Many readers might know of him through the Wallander T.V. series and several films produced from Mankell’s novels.

A number of my friends got hooked on Swedish “Noir” novels not many years ago when Stieg Larsson’s three large mystery novels featuring journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the amazing Lizbeth Salander were published.

These books were published posthumously because, although Larsson was a prolific writer during that time, he wrote those three novels for his own pleasure. When he died of a heart attack at age 54, others brought these novels to the public.

I can remember reading each of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest well into several nights.

Perhaps I identified a bit with Blomkvist and his pursuits, and I was cheering every time Lizbeth dealt with one of her abusers and managed to foil those at the top of the Swedish power elite.

A couple of years ago, I happened upon a young Swedish woman writer named Liza Marklund. At that time I read Red Wolf (2003) and Postcard Killers (2010) and was quite taken with

the character of newspaper reporter Annika Bengtzon. While covering stories for the papers she works for, she ends up in the middle of crime scenes, and because she is a tough customer, she manages to help the police catch the criminals and unravel some disturbing plots.

Sweden’s most popular writer today is crime writer Camilla Lackberg.

Several friends and my wife and I have read nine of her novels. Her mystery novels are strong in detail, sharp in characterization, and deep in psychological complexity.

Throughout these novels, we follow the careers of Erika, a free lance writer, and Patrik, a police officer. We meet them before they know one another, when they first start dating, when they get married, when they have children, and when their children are growing.

Their narrative carries through several novels during which time they solve several murders and uncover many conspiracies.

Beginning with The Ice Princess in 2003, Lackberg has caught the imagination of readers worldwide. The same could be said of Norwegian Noir writer Jo Nesbo, whose protagonist Harry Hole has a resemblance to Mankell’s Wallander. To begin with, I’d recommend both The Phantom and The Snowman.

Forests Minister Steve Thomson has been pinch-hitting for Fort St. John MLA Pat Pimm on the agriculture file as Pimm undergoes cancer treatment. Thomson took exception when NDP agriculture critic Nicolas Simons asked if he is aware people think the changes are to “neuter the chair of the Agricultural Land Commission.”

Thomson, a former executive director of the Kelowna-based B.C. Agriculture Association, replied that the changes do not reduce the independence of the chair.

Under further questioning from Simons, Thomson allowed that the current ALC chair, Richard Bullock, has provided no response to the government on the proposals.

Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick was appointed Friday to replace Pimm as agriculture minister.

But this ALC project is Bennett’s initiative, so I asked him about his changes to the appointment process.

Bennett said the six regional panels, up to three people each, were set up by then-minister Stan Hagen in 2003 to provide local input. That worked well, he said, until Bullock came on the scene and began exercising his discretion not to appoint people recommended by cabinet.

“The chair doesn’t like the regional panels,” Bennett told me. “It’s a pain in the ass for the chair to have to deal with 18 farmers from all over the province in making decisions. It would be

Legislature starts debate on ALR changes

Detailed debate on changes to the Agricultural Land Commission got underway in the legislature last week, while protesters played to urban voters outside.

A couple of West Kootenay NDP supporters brought a basket of homegrown veggies down to help East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett get through the winter on a 100-mile diet.

A group of mostly UBC scientists wrote to Premier Christy Clark, embracing the popular assumption that the changes will automatically mean more exclusions of agricultural land, as well as expanded secondary uses in the Cariboo, Kootenay and North zones. This “jeopardizes species at risk, threatens many common species, and will impact many species prized for hunting,” they wrote.

It makes me wonder if these university botanists and bird experts actually understand what farming is. You know, clear-cutting a forest and planting largely monoculture crops? Using big machinery, creating drainage, applying fertilizers, controlling diseases, pests and wild animals? Not backyard gardening, real farming of the sort that has fed more people than in all of human history?

Have they heard that the largest cause of deforestation in North America is farming?

Do they imagine habitat loss from subdivisions sprawling across the Cariboo?

Preparations are well underway for the fifth year of Castlegar Sculpturewalk.

This year’s sculpturewalk kicks off on Saturday, May 10, and will feature 32 artists

Hospice holding garage sale The Castlegar Hospice Society is accepting donations for its annual garage sale.

The second annual sale is set for May 31 at Mountain Transport Institute, located at 2181 - 6th Ave (beside the fire hall).

Donations will be gratefully accepted at the MTI trailer on May 3, 10, 17 and 24.

The trailer will be parked in the Sandman parking lot. Volunteers will be onsite from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to assist.

Annual Spring Fun-raiser Kootenay Family Place is holding its annual Spring Fun-Raiser.

The event will be held Thursday, May 1 in the parking lot at Kootenay Family Place, located at 749 11th Ave. Funds raised from this event go towards programs offered at the neighborhood house.

There will be a variety of organic vegetables and flower starts for sale, as well as a bake sale, yard sale, and a children’s boutique.

RECREATION LEADERS – SUMMER CAMPS Castlegar and District Community Complex Part-Time Auxiliary Term The Castlegar & District Community Complex (NDCC) is currently inviting applications to apply for the position of Recreation Leader for our summer camp programs beginning June 1st and ending August 31, 2014. Reporting to the Recreation & Cultural Programmer, the successful individuals will be responsible for supervision and instruction of recreation sport and leisure programs. Recreation Leaders are responsible for the program planning, general safety and overall enjoyment of the patrons attending the program in a variety of settings. This is an auxiliary position with a schedule that is specific to the programs scheduled. Recreation Staff may work mornings, afternoons or evenings based on availability, staff qualifications and program requirements.

If you are a job seeker or an employer searching for workers then the Kootenay Career Development Society is a place you will want to visit.

KCDS celebrated its second anniversary with an Open House last week.

The event featured refreshments and door prizes.

The staff was on hand to offer tours and overviews of the work they do to help

employees and employers find each other.

“We are so happy to be here celebrating our second year,” Employment Services Centre manager Joanna Swanson-Kutaseswich said. “Our role in the community is to help job seekers, employers, and community members.

We like to work collectively as a team in the community.”

KCDS offers free services to those who are unemployed or underemployed.

They provide resume and cover letter writing assistance, interview skills training, help with organizing and accessing funding and workshops and skills training.

The centre serves between 400 and 600 clients each month.

KCDS receives its funding from the Province of British Columbia and the Federal Government.

The first person you meet when you walk through the doors is Leni Normington.

The employment counsellor is very passionate about helping those who come to the office.

Summer Martin was the second highest money raiser, with $215.75, and she won a bowling party from Castle Bowl. The top 20 money raisers

from the primary and intermediate classes each get to participate in a swim party at the Sandman Hotel.

These students will also enjoy pizza from Panago, and donuts and cookies from Plaza Bakery and Bagels and Brew.

Mrs. MacKinnon’s Grade 2/3 class set a

class record with raising $1893.80. They also had 79 per cent of the class participate, and they won a cookie party from Crumbs Bakery.

Ms. Minor’s Grade 6/7 class had 50 per cent participation, and they won a cupcake party from Country Style Bakery.

The Robson Community School has just wrapped up it’s annual spell-a-thon, and it was the most successful one yet.

The school raised more than $5,400 and almost 60 per cent of the student population participated.

Over spring break, the students were asked to seek pledges from family members, friends and neighbors and to study their specific spelling word list.

The tests were given out on Wednesday, April 2, and students had to achieve at least 75 per cent to be qualified to win prizes, donated from throughout the community.

Students were awarded prizes based on how much money they raised, and classes were awarded prizes based on how many students participated.

The prize assembly was held on Friday, April 11.

This year’s Spring Fling is all about family fun.

“We are really excited about this year’s festival,” said Peter Laurie, one of the organizers.

“We have a great lineup and there will be lots for everyone to do.”

The 9th Annual Spring Fling Festival takes place Saturday April 26 in downtown Castlegar.

The festival runs 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

“The popular 3-on-3 hockey event will be introducing an elimination style hockey tournament where teams will compete for a life size replica of the Stanley Cup,” added Laurie.

This year will see the addition of two rinks, allowing for more teams and games.

Another new event will be the Bike Rodeo where kids can bring their bikes and take part

in a variety of activities.

There will also be a variety of local vendors who will be there providing a variety of food, crafts and information.

Miss Castlegar and other Queen Candidates will be hosting the Kids’ Carnival where kids can play games. There will be lots of local musicians and entertainers taking to the stage throughout the day.

As always the annual Show n’ Shine will give local car enthusiasts the chance to show off their rides.

There will also be an opportunity for festival goers to check out police cars, fire trucks, search and rescue vehicles and ambulances.

“Bring the whole family out and help us give springtime a warm welcome in downtown Castlegar,” said Laurie.

Bigger fines for distracted drivers a distraction

Victoria knows a vote winner when it sees one and it is pondering a big fine hikes and additional demerit points. The local action comes on the heels of Ontario introducing legislation last month that increases fines from the already high $300 to $1,000.

Fanning the public outrage, BC Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced that distracted driving is killing more British Columbians than impaired driving. Forgive my cynicism, but I really question the sudden rush of statistics showing how heinous and deadly a crime this is.

When I began writing on this topic about five years or so ago, there were no such statistics available. It was all anecdotal because, let’s face it, it’s an offence very visible to other drivers. It’s always seemed to

me that drivers who talk and text are reckless risk-takers, who run red lights, follow too closely and make dangerous lane changes even without a phone in their hand. My point being that when they crash while performing one of the preceding illicit manoeuvres with phone in hand it’s a little too convenient to blame it all on operation of the device.

Much of the current public debate was spurred by the revelation that a serial offender in Vancouver racked up 26 tickets and fines of $4,300 for distracted driving since 2010. He may be the pin-up boy for those seeking tougher penalties but interestingly, it appears he never once caused an accident during the time he was caught in cellular action!

Now the law is in force, I’ve no problem in accepting it but let’s not kid ourselves into thinking this will stop idiots such as this overly chatty man continuing to take risks on the road that threaten us all.

The fines are already high enough to deter regular drivers who are tempted to err occasionally. That said; I do worry about how zealously this law is enforced. I frequently hear of tickets issued to drivers who

mere glance at their device while at a red light or move it to a new resting place around the dash.

I fear the debate about the fines is a distraction in itself from getting to the heart of dangerous driving. Therefore, I am pleased to hear Anton is also considering public education campaigns on distracted driving, similar to previous initiatives targeting seatbelt use and drinking and driving. That is smarter.

Research shows that many distractions contribute to road carnage. Be careful what you wish for because there are other technological distractions in our vehicles that could invite bans of which you may not enthusiastically support. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber I guess you could say I was addicted. Only my drug of choice wasn’t coke or meth. No - it was the thrill of getting away with it all.

And the easy cash, of course.

Throwing the camper into that last deal was a great marketing idea.

And, like last time, I decided to branch out again. There’s so much more than just cars!

This time I decided to go with a motorcycle.

I purchased it off the internet – I guess you could call it a curber-to-curber transaction.

Oh, of course I knew every trick in the book by now. The seller gave me my old story and said that he was the real owner.

Did I care? Not a chance. It was a nice Harley. And, it was a steal. I knew I could flip it for more.

Why? Because I was a better marketer.

But I needed to do it fast. And, I had to make sure I had a buyer that was naive enough not to do a lien check through carproof.com, or the province (bcregistryservices. gov.bc.ca).

As usual, I put up a generic, one-line Craigslist ad. With a price like mine, I had a buyer within an hour.

I made sure the Harley looked its best. I polished it until it sparkled and filled it with gas. Hey, what’s a few bucks?

Then I ran into a small problem. I found out that my seller was the real owner. Wow. But he sold me a vehicle that was about to be repossessed.

Fortunately, he was in such a hurry that he didn’t make me do the transfer – so it was still in his name.

No big deal. Bridging* was my friend.

I just used his name and hoped my buyer would never ask me for ID. And I was right. The buyer smelled a bargain and took the bait like fish. He thought I was the fool!

No lien check, no ID check. Just cash.

I was home free, again.

And the best part? When the bailiff came for the motorcycle, he didn’t even know my name.

*Bridging – A trick that curbers use to keep their identity secret. Curbers will pay more for a vehicle from an unscrupulous wholesaler or broker if they are not required to immediately put the vehicle in their name.

This keeps their name out of the vehicle registry and makes them impossible to locate when deals go bad.

Breaking the law is never a concern for them.

Final concert of the season at the Gallery The final concert of the season in the TD Canada Trust Kootenay Gallery Concert Series will be held on Sunday, April 27 featuring Trio Voyage from Nelson.

Trio Voyage is an acoustic trio that explores music from many different corners of the globe. The trio plays traditional music rich in diversity as well as their own, “world inspired” compositions.

Improvisation plays a prominent role in the repertoire of the group as the performers freely interpret music from around the world, making each performance a unique experience for the listeners and performers alike.

Selkirk College’s Sound and Music program forms the backdrop to the creative energy of this ensemble with members Don MacDonald violin/composition, Paul Landsberg, guitar and guest vocalist Laura Landsberg on faculty.

Doug Stephenson, guitar and bass (married to faculty member Melody Diachun) is often heard in performances at the College.

Individually, the musicians have performed throughout Canada, the U.S. and Europe with leading jazz and contemporary artists as well as keeping busy schedules as music educators and composers.

• Grade 12 Education or equivalent job experience required.

• Must be well organized and have time management skills.

• Strong Computer skills are essential.

Joining the trio for this performance is Paul’s wife Laura who manages her time between being a mother of six, teaching college and performing as a professional jazz singer. As the daughter of Canadian jazz legend Ian McDougall, Laura comes to her talent naturally.

This concert will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 27 at the Kootenay Gallery, located on Heritage Way across from the Castlegar Airport.

Local skier happy with finish at championships Betsy Kline

Castlegar skier Jeff Ashton returned home from the International Free Skier Association North American Championships in Snowbird, Utah excited about the competition and happy with his performance.

The 16 year old had a successful qualifier run and headed in to the finals in 33rd place.

Ashton finished the finals in 20th place out of the 91 competitors in the Male 15–18 division.

“The venue was the sickest I have seen,” Ashton said. “I was ‘Stohked’ with the competition. I would also like to say thanks to my sponsors, Outdoor Tech and Stohke Productions. I am looking forward to next season.”

The morning of the competition the slopes were icy and there were a lot of crashes.

Dennis Marvin Greep It is with deep, and heavy sadness that we announce the death of Dennis Marvin Greep who passed away unexpectedly on April 9, 2014.

Survived by his wife Heather, daughters Jennifer (Chris) Holt of Castlegar, Rosalyn (Nylan) LaFreniere of Fruitvale, son Wesley (Alexa) of Castlegar, granddaughters Ella and Kinsley and Heather’s family. Sadly predeceased by his parents Bette and Earl.

Dennis was a quiet man who loved nothing more than to spend time with his dogs. He adored his two granddaughters and was thrilled whenever he got the chance to spend time with them. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed being outside. Words cannot express how much he was loved and will be missed. We will carry you in our hearts always!

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA in memory of Yogi and Kochda.

A private family service will be held.

Ileana Woykin November 16, 1937 – April 10, 2014 It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Ileana Woykin. Ileana lived in Krestova, BC most of her life and was a strong, soulful spirit who touched us all deeply. She was a devoted Christian lady who enjoyed cooking great meals, gardening, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Few knew that she had a photographic memory which stayed with her until the end.

She was predeceased by her brother Lloyd Woykin and is survived by her children Tom Koftinoff, David Koftinoff, and Janet Koftinoff. Grandchildren Danielle Hadikin, Melissa, Jillian, and Katarina Koftinoff, and Erika Hills.

The City of Castlegar is moving forward and exploring the possibilities of bringing broadband internet service to the community.

The Castlegar Broadband Committee has been collecting surveys from businesses and analyzing the needs and interests in the community.

The city is working in conjunction with the Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbia Basin Trust.

The cities of Trail, Nelson and Rossland are also working with

CBBC to bring broadband to their communities.

Broadband is a fibre infrastructure that in Castlegar will reside on the existing fibre network for large portion of the system. Fibre optic cables are glass fibres that are sturdy and long-lasting. CBBC has fibre in the East and West Kootenay and will provide a connection to the city over its fibre “backbone”.

The broadband will be capable of managing internet speeds of up to 100 megabits per second up and down loading. Current service in Castlegar is up to 25 mbps down-

loading and 5 mbps. According to the Castlegar Broadband website, “The proposed broadband will be much faster and more stable than current options for a similar cost.”

Proponents of bringing broadband to Castlegar believe it will greatly benefit businesses by increasing efficiency and enabling expansion. They believe it will also benefit the community at large through uses in education, health services, emergency services and Government opportunities.

“The greatest benefit is the potential economic development,”

said Tammy Verigin-Burk, broadband committee member and Castlegar Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

“It would put us on the same level as cities that already have broadband service. Broadband service would allow speeds more conducive to downloading and uploading, increasing cost efficiency. It will also be great for consumers as it will increase the speed of debit and other transactions. It will give us the capacity to attract high end progressive internet based businesses.”

Bring pineapples, sugar, and water to a boil in a large saucepan. Reduce heat; simmer, skimming foam. Cook until pineapples are translucent and mixture has reduced to 4 cups, 60 to 80 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl; let cool. Stir in mustard. (Glaze will keep, covered and refrigerated, for 3 days.)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees with rack in lowest position. Score ham with a sharp knife in a pattern of 1 1/4-inch diamonds. Press a clove into the center of each diamond.

Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan; drizzle wine over top. Coat ham with half the glaze. Cover with parchment, then foil, and bake for 1 hour. Remove from oven.

Increase oven temperature to 425 degrees. Uncover ham, and coat with remaining glaze (some will fall to the bottom of the pan). Bake, uncovered, basting occasionally, until browned, 40 to 45 minutes. (Tent bone with foil if it becomes too dark.) Transfer ham to a cutting board; let rest for at least 30 minutes before carving. Serve with pan drippings and pineapple. Garnish with mustard greens if desired.

Serve with baked yams for a delicious Easter feast!
