Here are a few places to visit this spring:

Explore the newly renovated playgrounds in four of Richmond’s neighbourhood parks:

1. Britannia Heritage Shipyard Park is a national historic site in Steveston Village. The park offers spectacular views of historic cannery and shipyard buildings and features an interpretive program for you to experience Richmond’s maritime past.

Spring is the perfect time to visit the Richmond Nature Park.

Enjoy the blooming flowers in the Wildlife Garden, the bird identification and feeding station and the buzzing new colony of honeybees in the Nature House.

Stretch your legs on a walk through the park or enjoy a picnic.

Drop in to the Nature House to pick up your first clue for a scavenger hunt through the park.

Partners For Beautification The City of Richmond’s Partners For Beautification program offers residents the opportunity to become actively involved in the beautification of their community by adopting public spaces and keeping them clean, green and beautiful.

2. Garden City Community Park is the jewel of the City Centre, featuring an award-winning adventure play environment, an arboretum of specimen trees from around the Pacific Rim and walking trails that wind around the beautiful lake.

3. Garry Point Park is Richmond’s premier waterfront destination.

Located west of historic Steveston Village, the park offers beach and waterfront access with spectacular views of the Fraser River Estuary and the Gulf Islands.

4. Middle Arm Waterfront Park stretches along the Middle Arm Dyke Trail from the Richmond Olympic Oval to the Cambie Pump Station and features piers, an amphitheatre, public art and multiple play areas.

5. Terra Nova Rural Park and Natural Area is a great place to go bird-watching or for a scenic stroll.

The park features boardwalks, trails, heritage buildings, community gardens and more.

Explore the Railway Greenway The Railway Greenway is a 5 km corridor linking the Middle Arm to Britannia and the South Dyke. Since work started, the focus has been on establishing a walking, rolling and cycling infrastructure to allow everyone to enjoy the latest addition to Richmond’s trail system.

The Greenway is also an important corridor within Richmond’s ecological network and tree plantings and invasive plant removal have begun to enhance the ecological values of the corridor.

In the future, the Railway Greenway will provide an enriched, natural environment for everyone to enjoy.

Hummingbird Homecoming Battle of the Birds Since September, visitors to the Nature Park have enjoyed watching Anna’s Hummingbirds – colourful winter residents in Richmond. That all changed on March 16 when Rufous Hummingbirds arrived for their nesting season and promptly chased the Anna’s away.

On Sunday April 20 from 11:00 a.m.

– 3:00 p.m., drop in to the Richmond Nature Park to meet these pugnacious birds and discover their fascinating, fast paced life. You are guaranteed to see Rufous Hummingbirds but if you’re lucky, you might spot an Anna’s hiding in the bushes while waiting for a turn at the feeders.

Owl Show Owls are remarkable predators that rarely allow you to see them up close. Stop by the Richmond Nature Park on Sunday, May 11 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for an opportunity to see live owls and learn their nocturnal secrets. Activities for children are included.

The Owl Show is presented by the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (O.W.L.), a Delta organization that rehabilitates injured or orphaned birds of prey. The show is suitable for all ages and admission is by donation – proceeds support Richmond Nature Park Society educational programs.

Nature Park Online Live Cameras If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside a Black-capped Chickadee nesting box now is your chance to find out!

Richmond Nature Park has placed a live camera inside an empty nesting box in hopes that the chickadees that used it last year will be back again. You might be able watch them build their nest, defend it from intruders, and lay and incubate their eggs.

Richmond Nature Park’s live cameras can now be seen online. The webcams change seasonally to feature bird feeders, a chickadee nest box and a hummingbird feeder. Video highlights are also posted for viewing.
