West Kootenay has approved the Berry family as the successful applicants for the first Habitat for Humanity home to be built in Cranbrook. The selection committee, comprised of Jill Johnston, Gord Harder and Stu Deeks, reviewed applications, interviewed and visited with five families in the past three months. “It was a thorough and rigorous process,” commented Jill Johnston. “The three of us approached the task from divergent points of view and we all agreed on the final recommendation. We believe the application process resulted in the selection of the best Family Partner for this project. The family were elated when we shared the news of the Board’s approval.” Work on the Slaterville neighbourhood lot that was donated by the City of Cranbrook, began with Darrell Bohmer, owner of AJC Construction, doing some site preparation over the April 5th weekend. Actual excavation and building will start in the near future according to Project Leader Gord Johnston. For more information or to donate to the project, go to: www.habitatwk.ca and click on Cranbrook Project.

Prescribed burns in the area this month

Photo submitted

Last year’s prescribed burns in the area removed dry fuel in the area. Submitted

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is planning to conduct two prescribed burns in the East Kootenays in April. The timing of the burns is dependent on weather and site conditions. The first burn was tentatively scheduled for this past week, and will be conducted about five kilometres west of Lake Koocanusa, next to Newgate Road in the Bare Mountain region. This 432-hectare controlled burn is part of the provincial government’s strategy to restore and maintain forest and range ecosystems. The second fire is scheduled to occur with-

in the next two weeks about five kilometres northeast of Fort Steele, west of the Wildhorse River in the Brewery Ridge area. Smoke and flames from this 200-hectare fire may be visible to residents of Fort Steele and from Highway 95. Trained wildfire personnel will carefully monitor and control these fires at all times. The burns will proceed only if weather conditions and fire behaviour will allow for quick

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A3 smoke dissipation and low to moderate fire intensity. If conditions are not suitable, the burns may not occur this year. These areas are a part of a multi-area ecosystem restoration prescription held by the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District. Both fires will help re-establish appropriate ecological conditions, maintain habitat for wildlife and reduce the amount of forest fuels in these areas. The goal of these burns is to mimic naturally occurring ground fires and reduce the amount of combustible material in open forest areas. Removal of forest fuels helps reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Fire can also discourage insect infestations and help native, fire-adapted plant species to reproduce. When they become available, photos of the burn will be posted on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/BCForestFireInfo

Select herbicides will be used at a low rate of application to control growth of unwanted vegetation without affecting other vegetation outside facility areas. TCPL facility areas include compressor station yards, metering facilities and valve sites. This will reduce any potential fire risk, maximize public safety, and allow access to facilities for maintenance and operational data collection. TransCanada’s fenced facilities should only be accessed by authorized personnel. Pay attention to security signs and avoid approaching the sites during herbicide spraying. Select herbicides may also be used on TransCanada rights-ofway in accordance with the Weed Control Act of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands by orders from the B.C. Ministry or local jurisdictional authorities. The trade name and active ingredient of the herbicides to be used are listed in the attached table. The pesticides will be applied by backpack sprayers with wands, trucks with spray tanks and power nozzles, all-terrain vehicles with specialized spray equipment or helicopter with specialized aerial spray equipment. Other methods of vegetation control can be through mowing, brushing or hand-picking. The Kimberley Youth Engagement Strategy (YES!) is a project that is about improving the community experience for Kimberley’s teens and young adults. Thanks to funding from the Columbia Basin Trust, this year-long project will provide a valuable opportunity to identify needs and build stronger relationships between youth and the community. The project will invite reflection by both youth and the community-atlarge on questions like: how can Kimberley optimize its youth-focused assets and resources? What services is our community missing? What steps can be taken to ensure our community’s teens and young adults are proud to call Kimberley home? Throughout the next year the project will be gathering baseline data, surveying youth and meeting with youth leaders and youth-serving organizations to understand how we can make Kimberley a more vibrant place for young people. The end goal is to identify strategic actions and priorities that will benefit teens and young adults in Kimberley and strengthen the community as whole. To kick things off YES! is hosting a project launch event on May 1st. This will be an opportunity for youthserving organizations and youth-interested stakeholders to learn about the project, how they can get involved, and to provide valuable input on the project’s design and work plan. If you are an interested teen or young adult between the ages of 1229 or represent a local youth-serving organization and would like to receive an invitation to the launch event, please contact info@yeskimberley.com. If you are unable to attend the launch event and are interested in being part of the steering committee, or otherwise involved in the project, contact info@yeskimberley. com. College of the Rockies graduates first all-female Haul Truck class

Photo submitted

College of the Rockies Haul Truck Operator program graduate, Meagan Sam, receives her certificate of completion from instructor Darren Hood and AMTA Program Manager Suzanne Pederson. Meagan was one of six women who completed the first all-female class. Submitted College of the Rockies’ Haul Truck program celebrated the graduation of its first all-female class. Six women from both BC and Alberta successfully completed the program on Friday, March 28. The all-female class came about through a partnership with the Aboriginal Mentoring and Training Association (AMTA). Half of the participants came to the haul truck program through AMTA. College of the Rockies’ Director of Continuing Education, Contract Training & Regional Campuses Leah Bradish says, “AMTA was interested in us offering an all women intake as currently women make up only about five percent of the workforce in mines and they are an excellent source of skilled workers for the industry. This group of women was very enthusiastic and excited about the potential to gain employment in the mining industry in Western Canada.” AMTA Manager of Programming for the Kootenay Region, Suzanne Pederson agrees, “This was an outstanding chance for us to continue to work with the College to provide opportunities for these COTR students and AMTA candidates to find employment in this ever-growing field.” Meagan Sam, one of the students enrolled in the March haul truck

class, travelled from Williams Lake for the

training. She was offered employment with

Ledcor Group, a contractor for Gibraltar

Mine even before completing the course.

ATTENTION TO Those Impacted by the March 4-11, 2014 Major Flooding Those impacted by the recent flooding event may be eligible for financial support under British Columbia’s Disaster Financial Assistance Program. Assistance is available to qualifying homeowners, residential tenants (renters), small business owners, farm owners, charitable organizations and local government bodies that incurred more than $1,000 of uninsurable damage during the period March 4-11, 2014, and that are situated within the geographic boundaries of the Regional District of East Kootenay (Electoral Areas A,B,C,E), City of Kimberley, City of Cranbrook, Village of Canal Flats, City of Fernie and St. Mary’s Band. Assistance is limited to providing 80 percent of eligible items that are considered essential to a home, livelihood or charitable service, for the portion of the claim that exceeds $1,000. To apply for financial assistance, individuals must complete and return an Application for Disaster Financial Assistance. Application forms are available from the Emergency Management BC web site at: http://www.embc.gov.bc.ca/em/dfa_claims/dfa.html, Government Agent offices, most local government offices, Emergency Management BC regional offices, or by e-mailing the EMBC Recovery Office in Victoria at DFA@gov.bc.ca or calling toll-free 1-888-257-4777. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible but no later than July 2, 2014 to: By mail: Ministry of Justice Emergency Management BC PO Box 9201 Stn Prov Govt Victoria, B.C. V8W 9J1 By fax: 250-952-5542 By e-mail: DFA@gov.bc.ca

“The program and the instructor, Hoody, were both great,” Sam says. “I am so glad that I was able to gain experience in emergency scenarios in a simulator so I know how to react if I run into trouble on the job. I am definitely going to be more comfortable driving a haul truck in my new job having been through this training.” Throughout the region, the haul truck operator training has been well-supported. “Teck went above and beyond for this group, providing a tour of their Fording River operations to the students. We can’t thank them enough for that. We also greatly appreciate our partnership with AMTA and all of the support they have given the haul truck program from the start,” Bradish adds. The four-week haul

truck program combines classroom instruction, online coursework and safety tickets with oneon-one coaching on the College’s motion-based haul truck simulators. The simulators provide a virtual haul truck driving experience in a variety of weather and emergency situations. The program runs monthly in both Cranbrook and Fernie. The mobile simulator will be ready by the end of April and will be available to provide training anywhere in Western Canada. Benefits of postural and muscular assessments prior to commiting to a training program

Your posture tells a lot about you. Having a good posture is essential to leading a healthy lifestyle; it will allow you to breath better, move better, perform better as an athlete and stay injury free. However, in our modern society more and more people are suffering from poor posture due to a sedentary lifestyle (sitting at a desk with poor ergonomics all Aurélie week is one of the main causes of Wiedemann poor posture nowadays). Being active, whether by working out or participating in sports, can help. Although practicing a sport where the same muscles are used over and over, or performing a workout without having any guidance can actually worsen an already imbalanced posture. This is why seeking professional help is important; your workouts shape your body! As Paul CHEK (a world renowned expert in the field of exercise kinesiology) always says: “Exercise is the drug of choice.” Workouts can be the best medicine but sometimes also the worst if done improperly. In addition, bad lifestyle habits as well as poor nutrition can also influence your posture. For example: if you only drink pop throughout the day, skip breakfast, barely eat lunch, then stuff yourself at dinner with junk food, chances are you’re going to mess up your system. You will likely experience joint problems and muscle weakness which directly influence posture, on top of other problems such as food intolerances and weight gain which can literally impair the use of certain muscles. This is why at Sattva Training (now at Core Fitness) we offer two different postural assessment packages: Individual In-Depth Assessments which are quite detailed and one on one. Group Training Assessments and Program Creation which is a ½ day seminar where we will assess your posture in a group setting, explain why re-balancing you muscles is important, as well as show you and go through the exercises/stretches that are adapted to your body’s unique needs. After the seminar a detailed and tailored workout will be e-mailed to each participant. Seminars take place on Saturdays at Core fitness. To know more about our services come to Core Fitness, or call/message Aurélie Wiedemann at 250-464-4046. You can also e-mail Aurélie at sattvatraining@gmail.com For the latest news check out Sattva Training’s facebook page, and don’t forget to like it!

Q&A with astrologer Michael O’Conner

Michael O’Conner recently came on board as the Kootenay Advertiser’s astrologer of choice. The following article gives insight into the man and his profession. Q: I understand you will be visiting communities around the East Kootenay’s between April 21st and 27th and offering both visual Presentations and in-person Readings, can you say more about that? A: Yes, my tour begins in Creston on April 21st and 22nd, then I will be in Cranbrook April 23 & 24th, then Golden April 25 & 26th. In addition to in-person Readings, I am offering an exciting visual presentation entitled ‘What Astrology Can Do For You” which provides a deep and thorough tour into the world of astrology and specifically what it offers to people in terms of useful, practical and valuable insights and the areas of life it covers. No prior background or experience in astrology is required. The best way to learn more about dates, times and locations for my presentations and Readings and/or to reserve an appointment is to send me an email and I will forward the flyer sunstarastrology@ gmail.com or you can call me directly as well: 250-352-6871 Q: Where were you born? Raised?

A: I was born and raised in Montreal. Q: Why did you choose to live in the Kootenay Region? A: I made my first trip over to British Columbia in 1986 and quickly fell in love with it. The following year I successfully applied for a silviculture job and my first contract was in Cranbrook. I recall the scent of pine lingering in the air. It is a pleasant memory. That career lasted 10 years. So, in addition to my love of this beautiful part of the world, let alone Canada, my decision to reside here was practical, linked to my vocation. Q: What prompted you to become interested in astrology? A: Obtaining my degree overlapped with this period and I graduated from Concordia University in 1990. I had already been studying astrology and numerology since 1981. While my mother held a mild interest in it and made me aware of my sign when I was a child, it was my grade 11 high school English teacher who activated my deeper interest in and passion for astrology. I was a bit skeptical at first, as people often are when it comes to astrology, but I soon discovered that it provides deep and accurate insights about one’s nature, character, destiny and timing in life and more so yet. So, once ignited with this awareness my studies began and continue to this day. Astrology is much more intricate, diverse and profound than one might at first think. Q: Can anyone become an astrologer? A: While anyone can learn astrology, like many other things, they either have the innate aptitude, which is a

Tamara L’Hoost

mArKEtiNG CoNsULtANt

feature of their nature, character and destiny, or they do not in regard to actually taking it to a professional level. Commitment is another factor. Beyond the broad scope and rich complexity of knowledge required to understand how astrology works, the dedication of an astrologer often requires study in other areas well. There are philosophical, historical, psychological, sociological, astronomical and cosmological implication in astrology and having at least a broad based appreciation of these subjects are required to become well rounded in ones perspectives of people, human nature and life in general. So, many people can learn about astrology, which can certainly prove personally enriching on a variety of levels of awareness, insight and knowledge, but just as with a musical instrument, for example, not everyone will have the talent, aptitude or dedication to persevere long enough to attain the level of mastery for useful and accurate interpretation and application that it requires. Q: A lot of people think that astrology is for prophecy. Is it prophetic, or is it more a way to live life in a general way? A: Astrology certainly does have its roots seeped in the soils of prophesy. These were initially as basic and practical as endeavoring to make predictions for weather cycles as with almanacs and for navigation. In time, the focus was turned to the lives of people. Prediction remains a strong feature of astrology yet it is certainly not its only application. Modern astrology has evolved to break free of purely fatalistic thinking and attempts to make prophetic proclamations on that ba-

sis. Appreciation of the realities of freewill is now woven into the art of interpretation. It can best be described as the appreciation that while our lives are guided by a destiny, which we can call the probability factor, we can also make conscious, free will choices and thereby cocreate successful and meaningful possibilities. Awareness is the key and this is where astrology can help a lot. Sometimes it is simply about gaining clarification and affirmation, yet inspiration, long term perspectives or vision and strategic thinking in light of an awareness of the cycles of time are also valuable features of what astrology can offer. So, yes beyond the prediction or prophesy factor, astrology provides insight, wisdom and guidance about how we can live our lives more in-tune with our own nature and nature in general, which implies alignment, balance and health and to live more authentically. In the course of my work I do bring attention to future probabilities. My approach is to look at who you are, where you are coming from, which includes your past but more specifically what motivates and therefore excites you in a deep way. Also, where you are going to, which implies a sense of direction and orientation and of timing. Then, I look at where you are at now in your life, which focuses on current cycles, themes and their consequent outer reflections which manifest as events. And finally I look to what is next. The last part, what is next, can extend to short periods of time or to the long-term future. Altogether, this strategy provides a more holistic perspective than merely trying to predict the future. While the future is probable it is not certain. Possibility is an

Karen Johnston PUBLisHEr

ever present factor both in terms of the outcome of events and how we choose to interpret and deal with them. While our destiny, which again includes a weave of our nature, character and destiny, is written in the stars, it is not written in stone. Q: Have you ever done anyone’s chart that resulted in a “mindblowing” look into their future? A: In the course of my 20 year career I have most certainly been able to make predictions about career choices, real estate transactions, moves of residence, the likely outcome of relationships, about how to resolve issues and about key turning points in time and outer synchronistic events in general. People can read about the feedback from my clients in testimonials on my website. Q: Do you have any heroes in the astrology world? A: There are certainly a number of astrologers who I admire and who may be considered my heroes. Principle among these is Dane Rudhyar, who in terms of his contributions to astrology, may be equated to Carl G. Jung in psychology, Ken Wilbur in modern philosophy, or Edwin Hubble in astronomy and so on. Other astrologers who have been pivotal in my studies include Martin Schulman, Liz Greene, Erin Sullivan Stephen Arroyo and Martin Goldsmith. There are certainly others and not all of them are astrologers actually as I extend my study focus to other disciplines in an ongoing endeavor to broaden my overall knowledge towards deepened insight and understanding of human nature and the human condition.

Letter: On proposed changes to the ALR I am concerned with the negative reaction that seems to be catching most of the press interest in the proposed changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve. I am also a fourth generation rancher and am very proud of our Agriculture Industry. I am also the President of the Kootenay Livestock Association which is a Regional Association representing most of the ranchers in the East Kootenay Region. I want to go on record and be perfectly clear that these changes to the A.L.R. were requested of our M.L.A. The Honourable Bill Bennett, several years ago. We felt then and still feel that unless changes are made to the A.L.R. there will be no agriculture industry in the future simply because very few young people are willing to put in the hours and capital necessary to operate a farm or ranch under the economic and operation pressures we are facing. The truth is that most of those involved in farming and ranching operations are over fifty years old with few of their children prepared to continue the operation unless changes are made. The current A.L.R. legislation is too restrictive in terms of supplemental activities that can be conducted on A.L.R. land which could add needed revenue to support the ranching operation. The real truth is that the vast majority of farms and ranches are being supported or sustained by off-farm income. The absolute best way to ensure we will have a successful agriculture industry in the future is to make it profitable.

There is no doubt that food is important and being self- sufficient is providing food for our Province is certainly ideal but it is not real until the ordinary citizens and government understand it takes more than talk to sustain an agriculture industry. Mr. Bennett is only doing what he was asked to do and I know that there was a great deal of consultation with our ranching industry in the East Kootenay over the past couple years. Certainly there are individuals who will not agree and there are also ranchers who aren’t involved in local organizations who are quite vocal about what they want but our industry has had a great deal of input into the proposed changes. What I find especially troubling is when cities like Nelson pass a motion opposing the changes to the A.L.R. because they want to support local food supply. Such total ignorance of what it takes to have a successful Agriculture Industry should disqualify such responses. If you really want a sustainable agriculture industry you must listen to those involved in the day to day work and challenges of this great and important industry. Trying to score political points will not feed anyone. Randy Reay Reay Ranch

College is number one with international students—again Submitted

KIMBERLEY KUNG FU

College of the Rockies President and CEO David Walls shares the International Student Barometer survey results with a crowd of staff and students at a celebration held on Wednesday, April 9.

How does College of the Rockies improve on being the number one institution in Canada for international students? By becoming number one in the world! The results of the 2013 International Student Barometer were recently released and, for the second year in a row, the College had reason to celebrate. Conducted by the International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate) the International Student Barometer is the largest annual survey of international students in the world. It covers four benchmarks – arrival experience, learning, living and support. Feedback was gathered from almost 150,000 international students from 176 post-secondary institutions in 13 countries world-wide. Eighty-five percent of College of the Rockies’ international

students responded to the survey. College of the Rockies’ Executive Director, International and Regional Development Patricia Bowron says, “This is an incredible honour for the College, to come out as first in Canada last year and now to be ranked first both in Canada and in the world for overall student satisfaction. It was great to be able to see how our results fared against some of the most well-regarded post-secondary institutions in Canada and abroad.” “We work hard to serve our students and we are really pleased that they regard all aspects of the College so positively. We take part in this survey primarily to get honest and constructive feedback so that we can better serve our students. A ranking like this is really a bonus for us.” College of the Rockies ranked first in Canada

and internationally in arrival experience, with registration, accommodation and orientation to the local area all garnering top honours. Program organization also came in at number one along with learning support, teaching and lecture quality. Additionally, international students gave the social activities offered by the College and the cost of accommodations top ratings. Support was another area in which the College was highly ranked with the cafeteria, operated by Pita Wrapbit, and the International and Student Services departments all leading the pack. Annually, the College welcomes approximately 200 international students with the vast majority attending the Cranbrook main campus. In 2013 – 2014 academic year, the College welcomed its most diverse international student population, with students coming from 33 different countries taking a variety of programs including business, tourism and English. “The College’s high rankings for a second year in a row are a team effort. It is great to work at an institution where our employees have such a strong commitment to student success. We held a small celebration on April 9 with College staff and students to thank them for all they do to help make College of the Rockies a great place to be,” Bowron continues. Nature Trust of B.C. purchases property on Wigwam Flats Submitted

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is delighted to announce the completion of the purchase of the last privately owned property on Wigwam Flats and wishes to extend appreciation to the Tregilges family. The Tregilges family has had a connection to this land near Elko in the East Kootenay for many years. Phoebe Tolley Tregilges was born at Cokato, BC, in 1921. Phoebe, her sister Mildred and her brother Tom purchased the Wigwam Flats property when they were teenagers. Eventually Phoebe bought out her sister’s portion of the land (her brother Tom had died). The land was later passed to her children and eventually to her son John Tregilges. “Keeping the land in its natural state forever honours my mother’s love for this property,” said John. “It has been an especially gratifying experience to work with The Nature Trust since 2007 to make this possible.” Rob Neil, Kootenay Conservation Land Manager for The Nature Trust explains, “This 2 hectare (5 acre) property will be added to existing conservation lands owned by The Nature Trust and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources Operations. It will contribute to the natural mosaic of grassland, open forest and closed canopy forest habitats on the adjacent conservation holdings and surrounding Crown land. This complex of

habitat types provides class one winter habitat for elk and mule deer and is particularly important spring lambing and breeding habitat for approximately 250 blue-listed Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. Besides the variable habitat that makes the Wigwam Flats such an important area for wildlife, the natural topography provides excellent escape terrain for bighorn sheep when threatened by natural predators such as cougar and wolves.” In addition to providing high quality and essential habitat for wild ungulates the newly acquired property provides all the attributes required to support other species such as the red-listed American Badger. A key and essential partner of this acquisition was the Columbia Basin Trust. The Nature Trust gratefully acknowledges the financial support of Columbia Basin Trust which supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmen-

tal benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. “The Nature Trust does great work in the Columbia Basin and across BC. The most gratifying thing about our partnership in this project is the resulting benefit for a range of wildlife species and for a local family whose wishes are to see this property remain in a natural state,” said Neil Muth, President and Chief Executive Officer of Columbia Basin Trust. Other funding partners include the East Kootenay Wildlife Association, Elkford Rod and Gun Club, Fernie and District Rod and Gun Club, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program – Columbia, Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund, Southern Guides and Outfitters, Sparwood & District Fish & Wildlife Association, Wildsight Society, and Irene and Agathe Teske. Additional support for the project was provided by the Kootenay Conservation Program. “The Tregilges prop-

CBT’s five-year Environment Strategic Plan shaped by residents Submitted

Columbia Basin Trust’s new Environment Strategic Plan is now completed and will guide the Trust’s water and environment initiatives from 2014 to 2019. It sets goals in five areas: water, ecosystems, climate change, environmental education, and helping to strengthen organizations that focus on the environment. The plan is now available online at cbt.org/ environmentplan. To shape the plan, the Trust connected with Basin residents in 2013 through workshops, meetings and an online survey. Environmental experts and a range of organizations also provided their input. “I would like to ex-

tend my gratitude to the many people who contributed to this plan,” said Neil Muth, Trust president and CEO. “It will guide significant contributions to preserving our region’s natural environment, for the benefit of Basin ecosystems, species and residents alike.” The Trust’s role in achieving plan objectives includes providing resources and funding, bringing people together around key issues, providing information, and supporting collaboration on environmental initiatives or projects. To learn more about the Trust’s programs and initiatives, visit www.cbt.org or call 1.800.505.8998.

National Summer Safety week urges caution and preparation Submitted After months of chilly Canadian weather, we are more than ready for some summer heat! But too much sun and heat exposure can lead to serious heat-related illnesses. Heat-related illnesses include heat stress, heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Symptoms can range from painful muscle spasms to fainting, seizures, unconsciousness and even death. This National Summer Safety Week, from May 1-7, the Canada Safety Council encourages Canadians to take proactive safety measures to protect themselves, their children and pets while enjoying the heat of the summer months. Preventing heat illnesses During heat waves,

schedule outdoor activities during the morning or evening whenever possible to minimize time spent outdoors during peak heat hours. Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol – they are natural diuretics and will dehydrate you. Eat a balanced diet and consider sports drinks that contain electrolytes to replenish your body. Plan ahead and bring drinking water with you when you travel, when you are on the jobsite, etc. When out in the sun, wear light-coloured, loose fitting, and longsleeved clothing, and a hat with a brim. If you experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, blurred vision or nausea, stop what you are doing and find a place to rest.

Protecting workers Young men in manual occupations are the most vulnerable to extreme heat and heatillnesses, according to an Ontario study by the Institute for Work & Health. Inexperienced workers are especially at risk, because it takes time for the body to become used to working in hot conditions. In its ‘Heat Stress Awareness Guide,’ the Occupational Health and Safety Council of Ontario offers the following recommendations to employers for managing the risk of heat stress: Train workers to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat stress and to know how to avoid them. Provide water nearby on the job site and ensure everyone drinks about one cup of water every 20 to 30 min-

utes, even if they’re not thirsty. Establish a first-aid response system with trained first-aid providers and a means to record and report heat stress incidents. Allow time for workers to acclimatize to the heat and the work. This usually takes about two weeks. Encourage workers to use a buddy system – each buddy looks out for early signs and symptoms of heat stress in the other. Kids and cars Even on days that seem relatively mild, 20 minutes is all it takes for the interior of a vehicle to reach extreme temperatures. Exposure to these conditions can cause a child to overheat, go into shock and sustain vital organ failure. Tragedies like these happen every year in

Canada; yet, they are entirely preventable. Parents and caregivers need to be aware of and recognize the inherent dangers of leaving a child unattended, especially in a confined space such as a car on a hot day. The advice is simple: never leave a child alone in a vehicle – not even for a minute. Children are especially sensitive to heat exposure because their sweat glands are not fully developed, which means their bodies are not capable of cooling down quickly. When exposed to heat, a child’s body temperature rises three times faster than an adult in the same conditions. Incidents of children being forgotten in a vehicle can occur if otherwise responsible parents and caregivers are distracted, fatigued or if there is a break in

daily routine. However, extra care and vigilance is all it takes to ensure the safety of children and all other vehicle occupants, such as pets and elderly persons. Develop the habit of consciously checking that all occupants are out of the vehicle before it is parked and

locked. For example, lock your vehicle using your key, rather than a remote. Use these few seconds to scan the interior of the vehicle to make sure that no one has been left behind.

variable valve timing, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

If you can answer YES to any of these questions, we can help.

The 2015 Ford F150 is a head turner ogy to monitor traffic ahead and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. The lane keeping system is designed to help avert unintentional drifting of the vehicle outside the intended driving lane. The all-new 2015 Ford F150 turned some heads at the Vancouver International Auto show including mine. Here’s close look at what’s new and different. I think the first thing that impresses is the new styling. The LED back lit headlights are a real stand out and the grille is a three-bar traveling all the way down to the bumper, very nice. Next noteworthy change is the super lightweight military grade aluminum alloy body, weighing almost 318 kgs less than the previous model. We saw glimpses of this with Ford’s concept truck, the Atlas, but did not expect it to become reality so soon. No waste of materials building this new truck. Any unused aluminum during manufacture is reclaimed. When it goes on sale late this year, there will be five trims available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with them all. Monochromatic sport appearance packages are available with all but the King. Optional power running boards drop down into position only when the doors are opened and remain tight against the body. Some of the safety concerns expressed around driving a pickup are addressed with the use of sensors in the advanced personal safety system that control deployment of the dual stage front airbags, front seat side airbags, and side canopy

air bags. Advance-Trac and roll stability control comes standard. MyKey technology allows you to program the ignition keys with reminders to drive at appropriate speeds, limit the volume on audio system, limiting the vehicles top speed, muting the audio system until the front seatbelts are fastened. There are second-row inflatable safety belts, which work like a traditional belt but in-

McLovin’s Picks of the Week

By Rob Sass

MINIVAN

1990-93 Pontiac Trans Sport: GM perceived an unexploited niche for a minivan with some style, much like the European Renault Espace. The concept car was brilliant, with gullwing doors and a glass roof. Unfortunately, none of these features translated into the production model, whose awkward profile resembled a Black and Decker Dustbuster mini vacuum. The nickname “Dustbuster” stuck, and sales were modest. Buyers found them hard to see out of because of the huge distance between the steering wheel and the windshield.

The Vector W8 added up quickly and the Jensen-Healey was gone after just four model years.

The Jensen-Healey was designed to be the successor to the much-loved AustinHealey 3000, with input from the legendary Donald Healey. Unfortunately, where the earlier car had a lovely and curvaceous style to it, the J-H was perceived as bland and derivative. Also problematic was the new and untested Lotus twin-cam engine. Broken timing belts, oil leaks and low oil pressure issues ensured that warranty claims

SUPERCAR

1989-93 Vector W8: Promoted heavily as America’s answer to supercars like the Lamborghini Diablo, the Vector was underfunded, underdeveloped and (some said) amateurishly styled. Tennis star Andre Agassi was an early and unhappy customer when his car failed spectacularly on his first day of

ownership, by some accounts setting his garden on fire. Accusations and legal threats flew both ways, and in the end, just 17 cars were built before the whole venture collapsed. The original price was $455,000. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance. Learn more at hagerty.ca and you can email rsass@hagerty.com

SMALL CAR

1971-77 Chevrolet Vega: The Vega was supposed to be the small car that sent the new wave of Japanese imports back across the Pacific. Instead, it pushed a giant wave of buyers into Toyota and Datsun showrooms. The aluminum engine, which was prone to overheating and oil burning, and the hideously rust-prone bodies were often just the tip of the misery iceberg for Vega owners. Even the air in the tires seemed substandard. LUXURY CAR

1981 Cadillac DeVille V86-4: GM struggled to maintain a sense of traditional luxury under the weight of the first Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. And while the idea of a V-8 engine that turned off cylinders when they weren’t needed had promise that would eventually be realized, the technology of the day wasn’t up to the task and the feeling of the cylinders shutting off and on was perceptible to the point of being nausea-inducing. Cadillac introduced at least 13 new computer chips for the cylinder deactivation control system before giving up. SPORTS CAR

Hot laps with a world champ at the wheel

Alexandra Straub

By Alexandra Straub

Ojai, CA. - Four-time World Rally Champion (WRC), Tommi Mäkinen, is behind the wheel of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in the middle of nowhere, California. I’m riding shotgun along with two others in the back. The ease and effortlessness in which he wrangles the 305 turbocharged horses of the Subaru via the 6-speed manual gearbox is really no surprise. After all, he’s not a champion because he looks good doing it. So, if the pro can make it look and feel as perfect as a summer’s day, I should be able to as well, right? I slip into the captain’s chair of the STI – without Tommi in the car, thank goodness – and take to the 3.1-mile track. Prior to the hot laps, I had driven the outgoing 2014 Subaru STI on the same course. I’d be back-to-back testing these all-wheel drive machines to see how the en-

Confessions of a Curber

Tommi Mäkinen and Alexandra Straub gineering prowess has, yet again, continued to make a vehicle with a cult-like following even better. Rewind a few hours to the start-of-the-day’s press conference. Masuo Takatsu, WRX STI Project General Manager, mentioned the modus operandi of the fourth generation STI was to create a vehicle that behaves as the drivers expects it to. Mission accomplished. Though I didn’t even come close to Tommi’s performance, that wasn’t my goal. The goal was to experience first-hand how docile yet potent Subaru’s famed sedan took to the high speeds and corners of the club track. I had no desire to hand the keys over to my colleagues as they eagerly anticipated their time in the Rally Blue beauty. It would be sacrilege if I didn’t insert some technical jargon into the reasoning why the STI scored big points on the road test. Without getting too deep into the engineering, here are the top three take-home points of this incredible vehicle. One: the increased use of

high-strength steel makes for a stiffer and stronger body, and decreases its tendency to twist and bend in corners. The result? A more predictable handling sedan that isn’t easily irked and stays firmly planted to the ground. Furthermore, the 2015 STI achieves 16 percent less body roll than before. Two: You have the practicality of added dimensions. There is 25mm added to wheelbase, there is 900mm more legroom in back and you get 20L more cargo space (from 320L to 340L.) Three: You can get the rear wing in three different sizes. The technical terms used are wingless, small and large wing. My terms are: humble, less humble and table for six. Perhaps it’s also sacrilege to not put the emphasis of this review on the design and engineering of this new generation of STI. After all, it has been reimagined on both the inside and out. But anyone who knows the vehicle is aware that it is in a class of its own, with few competitors that can come close to the emotional appeal that this sedan brings to

the market. And anyone not familiar with it should be aware that, despite its 2.5L turbocharged engine, which produces the aforementioned 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, it is as gracious and powerful as a samurai soldier and his sword. Now, for those who are looking for similar excitement but not as many ponies, fear not, Subaru has their WRX to captivate you. Also completely redesigned on the inside and out, you have the magic of the Japanese brand’s 2.0L, turbocharged engine that produces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and also the choice of a manual or a Sport Lineartronic transmission (a CVT with 8 virtual gears; similar to that found on the new Forester but tailored specifically to the WRX.) It too has the dynamism and pedigree to impress on the road and track. Performance, good times, outstanding engineering and hot colours equate to the new 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI. WRC driver not included.

Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I

gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

*Rebuilt - This status is assigned to

“salvage” vehicles after they have been repaired and have passed inspection. Vehicle status alone does not fully describe a vehicle’s mechanical condition or damage history. This applies to RVs, motorcycles, cars and trucks.

“I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy to be safe.”
