Lacombe veteran is recognized for service Nick Melnechuk was awarded with Bomber Command Bar earlier this month

ecognition is always nice to have, even when it is a long time coming.

Nick Melnechuk, one of Lacombe’s Second World War veterans, was recognized for his service when he was awarded with the Bomber Command Bar at the Royal Canadian Legion last Thursday.

Melnechuk applied for the Bomber Command Bar last year when he first heard about the award but for some reason was not recognized in October with other members of the Bomber Command, such as fellow Lacombian Ken Long. However, when Melnechuk contacted Veterans Affairs, it wasn’t long before he received a letter stating that he could receive the recognition and wear the Bomber Command Bar. Melnechuk guessed that he was not initially awarded with the Bomber Command Bar because he was a nurse and not a member of the aircrew. However, he said he was still a member of the unit and his job was just as important as the ones flying the planes.

“I was stationed there, so I should get a medal, that’s what I feel,” said Melnechuk. “Anyone who was stationed there should get a medal.”

Stationed on the same base as the pilots of Bomber Command, it was Melnechuk’s job to patch up and care for the pilots and other members when they came back from missions or got sick.

Melnechuk said it was where his was stationed, not his job, that made him a member of Bomber Command.

It was a job that was many times stressful and overwhelming, Melnechuk said.

“What sticks out for me is – and it’s very depressing – is that every time a plan came back, it would be all shot up,” said Melnechuk.

“If it landed in our area, I would have to go to the crash site. It was very traumatic.”

It was quite difficult, to act as nurse to, or even remember fallen comrades who he had been close to during the war, said Melnechuk. He even spoke of waking up from nightmares, paranoid

“I would turn all the lights on, I remember this vividly, I would turn all the lights on and everyone would go, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ I would say, ‘Well, there’s someone under my bed!’” Of course, Melnechuk never found anything when he searched under his bed and eventually he got over those feelings of paranoia. Melnechuk also has many fond memories of his time in the service. He keeps a photo album full of images to remind him of those times and said he

was happy to serve his country doing what he loved to do.

“It was the work I loved,” said Melnechuk. “I enjoyed every minute of it. I have no regrets.”

When Melnechuk was conscripted in 1942, he was working as an orderly in Winnipeg. His letter said he was to report to the army, but before doing so, Melnechuk went to a local recruiting office for more information.

As soon as the recruiter heard that Melnechuk had a background in medical services, he told Melnechuk his services were needed in the air force more so

than the army. Melnechuk then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and his recruiter notified the army of the change. After joining the Royal Air Canadian Air Force, Melnechuk went to Trenton, Ontario to further his medical training and become a nurse with the military.

Melnechuk said it is important for Canadians to recognize and remember our veterans as a way to honour the sacrifices they made for our country.

He also said it is important for living veterans to share their stories so people will remember

“A lot of lives were lost. People donated their lives to the cause that they thought was the right cause, which I think was the right cause.”

New artwork to beautify Lacombe’s parks

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The City of Lacombe is looking for new ways to beautify the community’s parks.

Recently, the City put out a call to artists for the commission of a new water feature to be installed in the pond at Bruns Park.

“Lacombe has always been a beautiful City and it’s just another way to augment the beauty of this City,” said Maureen MacKenzie, executive assistant for the City of Lacombe.

MacKenzie said that, when asking for feedback from the citizens on how to improve the community, the subject of water fountains continues to come up. Mackenzie added that the hope is for this process to be repeated in the ponds elsewhere in Lacombe should it prove successful here.

tant and three dimensional. It also must incorporate some kind of water feature and will be displayed year round and can either be a feature at the edge of the pond or be on a separate ‘floating island’ inside the pond itself.

MacKenzie said that it is not a requirement, but it would be preferred if the water feature could fit a Japanese theme as there is already a Japanese torii at the park, commemorating the 20 year anniversary of the Rikubetsu Friendship Society. However, she reiterated that the City wishes to give artists as much freedom as possible to create.

“Because it’s artwork, we want them to take the idea and run with it,” said Mackenzie.

Submissions for the call to artists must be submitted by the end of May.

OPINION A new Lacombe hockey team?

Lacombe should have a hockey team. Of course, Lacombe already has minor hockey teams, but there hasn’t been a competitive adult hockey team in the City for years.

To the west, Bentley has a fantastic Senior AAA team, the Bentley Generals. To the north and south, both Ponoka and Blackfalds have teams in the Heritage Junior B Hockey league, the Stampeders and the Wranglers respectfully.

In the past Lacombe has been home to a few teams that competed in a higher level of hockey. While it was a long time before the Lacombe Express existed, we have still hear about the Lacombe Rockets Senior Hockey team that was renowned in its day.

Before moving to Blackfalds, the Wranglers were also based in Lacombe.

However, it has been years since there has been a team above midget level compet-

ing in this community.

There are people in Lacombe who wish to change that. Earlier this week, we received a letter from local resident Sandy Douglas that explored the possibility of bringing a new junior league team to the City.

Due to space constraints in this week’s edition, we are unable to print the letter but would like to take this opportunity to discuss this possibility nonetheless.

To put it simply, this sounds like a fantastic idea.

Lacombe could certainly support such a hockey team if one could be founded in the City once again.

In fact, many newcomers (and some not-so newcomers) to Lacombe have often wondered why there is no junior or senior team playing at the Lacombe Arena during the winters.

However, the community of Lacombe would have to do just that, support a team for this to become a real-

ity. Luckily, it sounds like something residents, businesses and other organizations within Lacombe and area would be happy to get behind.

There is a current theme in Lacombe to grow and

build the community to be the best place in Canada to live. Attracting a new hockey team would certainly be a step in that direction.

Douglas is currently inviting other interested individuals to discuss and

“Start the puck moving” to organize a proposition to bring such a hockey team to Lacombe, hopefully by 2019. Anyone wishing to join the discussion can contact Sandy Douglas at 403352-3376.

I am excited to announce that on April 15 the City will begin a singlestream blue box residential recycling program in an effort to divert recyclable waste from the landfill and to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of waste management in our community.

You may remember in 2013 the City conducted a four month public engagement process.

The most well received proposed system change was the implementation of a ‘Blue Box Recycling Program.’ Over 90% of the participants in the City’s pilot project supported the implementation of a household recycling pickup program.

The blue box program offers households a simple way to recycle, and will allow households to cut their garbage in half. The recycling collection service will be provided by the City’s third-party contractor Can Pak Environmental.

City staff are delivering blue boxes and collection calendars to all qualifying households in Lacombe. Once the program begins, clean off bits of food and other residue, and place the recyclables in your blue box – no sorting is required. Acceptable recyclable materials include clean plastic

CHRISTIE containers and lids labelled with the recycling symbol 1-7; metal food cans and aluminum foil; paper and cardboard; and refundable beverage containers. It’s okay to leave labels on metal food cans and plastic containers, etc. Remove lids and caps and place metal food can lids inside the can or leave attached. Remove plastic wrapping from magazines and catalogues.

Place shredded paper in a clear plastic bag and tie handles. Do not tie newspapers into bundles.

Do not place paint cans, aerosol cans, lighters, batteries, motor oil containers or other hazardous materials in your blue box. If a container has both a hazardous materials symbol and recycling symbol, do not place it in the blue box or at the Wolf Creek Recycle Site. Hazardous materials can harm people, equipment and the environment.

Other items not acceptable in your blue box include toys, sporting goods, electronics, building ma-

terials, scrap metal or houseware items. As well, glass jars, styrofoam containers/packing material, grocery bags, plastic utensils, and plastic laundry baskets will not be accepted.

The blue box will be collected once per week on your scheduled collection day. Blue boxes must be placed out by 7 a.m. either in the alley or at the front of your property depending on type of garbage collection at your residence to ensure service. If you have more recycling then can fit in your box, place the remaining recycling under or around the box, or place your recyclables in a clear or blue transparent bag. Any material placed in a black bag will be considered garbage. You can purchase an additional blue box from City Hall. You can also sign up for free reminders at www.lacombe.ca/garbage.

Residents will still be able to use the Wolf Creek Recycle Site.

Council has directed City administration to modify the site to allow for single-stream recycling, and to continue with its existing hours of operation. New signage for the site is in production, and once they are installed single stream bins, along with cardboard bins, will replace

the current system. Please note that glass will no longer be accepted when this change happens.

I have stated before that the manner in which our waste is picked up is secondary to the management of solid waste in the community. We will review the program after one year in order to gauge community support for this new initiative.

In 2012, the City collected 534 tonnes of recyclable material. The City’s pilot project results indicate that volumes should increase by at least 25%, and could in fact double as we implement this program.

A well run municipal recycling program is a key component of modern waste reduction practices. Recycling helps to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill, and helps to conserve natural resources such as timber, water, oil and metals. It saves energy and prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect and process new raw materials. Recycling also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change, and helps to sustain the environment for future generations.

Memorable ‘tails’ of man’s best friend Editor’s note: This week’s history column is a continuation of ‘Memorable local stories of ‘man’s best friend’ which ran in the Nov. 21 edition of the Lacombe Express.

GABRIELLA’S STORY Our family has always supported STARS through the calendar and lottery campaigns, but on April 20, 2010, the meaning of STARS in our life took on an entirely new meaning. It was early that morning that our daughter Gabriella was born by emergency Caesarean section at Red Deer Regional Hospital and at only 29 weeks gestation. She was tiny at just over 3 lbs and her lungs had not yet fully developed.

There was such panic and fear that day that I remember only parts of it.

One of the most distinct memories I have of that day was how quickly the STARS crew was there to help. I remember the sense of concern in the ICU that changed completely when the À LJKW FUHZ DUULYHG EULQJLQJ D VHQVH of calm and purpose to the process.

The crew had been mobilized from the Foothills Hospital before Gabriella was even born and included a ICU nurse, pediatric respiratory therapist and paramedics; a highly skilled group that operated with speed and precision to have Gabriella’s chest tube inserted and an IV line put into an arm that was no bigger than my thumb. The other most prominent memory I have is following the FUHZ WR WKH À LJKW GHFN LQ 5HG 'HHU to watch Gabriella loaded into the helicopter. I will never forget the

pilot walking over to me and putting his hands on my shoulders. He said, “Dad, we’re going to have your baby on the ground at Foothills Hospital in 25 minutes. You can’t beat us there, so take your time and drive safely.�

Gabriella spent a total of 45 days in the hospital after she was born, until she was strong enough to come home.

My experience in pediatric audiology in the past always had me wondering if there would be complications later in life, maybe with her vision, hearing or development. Today, as Gabriella turns 4 years old, she shows no effects of her early arrival. She is incredibly bright, already learning to read and write and normally developing in every way. She loves the outdoors and has always had a sense of adventure, and I often wonder if it has something to do with her start in life, riding in the helicopter when she was only minutes old. Today when we drive by the hospital, she always looks for the red helicopter and says, “Where’s the helicopter Daddy? I think there are some tiny babies in there, just like me.� For that, we will always be truly thankful and a proud supporter of STARS Air Ambulance.

FREDEEN Our dog, Bernie (whom I previously mentioned picked a ďŹ ght with a porcupine) proved a slow learner -- this was not his last experience with porcupines -- but it was his infatuation with pigs that soured our relationship. One day that summer the swine herdsman at the Research Station reported that Bernie was chasing pigs. Although I was skeptical I conďŹ ned him while I evaluated the evidence. However, Bernie escaped conďŹ nement and, taking matters into his own jaws, attacked a 200lb pig within sight of the house.

Some personal physical bests were established that day; in the span of about three minutes I had leapt a 4’ ft. wire fence, subdued Bernie who had torn a footlong triangle of skin from the pig’s loin, and heaved his 160lbs over the fence and into the back seat of the Vauxhall. As I started to drive home I noticed one ďŹ nger pointing upright from the steering wheel.

The dislocation had gone unnoticed in the moment.

It was about this time that I gained a possible insight into Bernie’s aversion to pigs. I was wakened one night by the sound of pigs snufing and grunting below our bedroom window.

I raised the curtain and below me on the concrete pad were two large porcupines wrestling, probably mating, in the moonlight.

However, the facts could not be ignored. Bernie was a killer and must be put down. Dr. MacDonald demurred. He had developed a soft spot for this dog; he would ďŹ nd a home where his anti-pig attitude would have no relevance. He was

as good as his word. And Bernie’s new owner, operator of a beef feedlot west of Blackfalds, was enchanted with this dog. From reports that ďŹ ltered back over the next two years, Bernie lived up to all expectations.

Then rumours began to circulate of a pack of killer dogs, a pack led by one huge individual that was ravaging sheep ocks some 30 miles away in the Rimbey area. My suspicions as to the probable leader seemed to be validated one morning as I drove to work through a gathering blizzard. My attention was on a radio newscast reporting the latest sheep slaughter at Rimbey when, bounding out of the snow, leaping from the snow ridge on my right to easily clear the hood of the car, came the unmistakable form of Bernie. Was he homeward bound after an evening out with his pack? We would never learn the truth, but after a dog answering his description was shot in the act of killing sheep in the west country there were no further depredations.

Abbey Centre in Blackfalds ofďŹ cially opens doors

week of operation, business is booming, ofďŹ cials said. “It’s a zoo,â€? said Sean Barnes, director of community services for the Town of Blackfalds. “We didn’t expect it to be this busy.â€?

For the Abbey Centre to prove so popular so early in its life shows just how needed this facility was in Blackfalds, said Barnes. “I just can’t believe how busy this facility is,â€? said Barnes. “Last Friday night we had 40 people in the ďŹ tness centre, we had 40-50 kids in the gym, we had I don’t know how many kids in the playground - it was packed. This was a dire need for the community.â€?

So far, the indoor playground and ďŹ tness centre are among the most popular features of the Abbey Centre, said Kreklewich. “I think a lot of people just like the sheer size of it and kids are enjoying it,â€? said Kreklewich. “And the ďŹ tness centre, I think a lot of people are blown away by the size and the quality of the equipment.â€?

Kreklewich also said that

staff have received positive comments on the hours of operation for the facility and are continuing to receive feedback. While most of the feedback has been positive thus far, Barnes said some complaints and criticisms have been received and Town of Blackfalds administration as well as Abbey Centre staff are reviewing and revising policies as necessary. He also asked people to be patient as any issues are dealt with. “There are going to be some growing pains,� said Barnes.

One of the most common complaints heard relates to the pool which is slated to be operational by the facility’s grand opening on May 23. Barnes said many people would like the pool to be enclosed so that it could be used year-round. Barnes said this simply is not ďŹ scally possible at this time, however, the facility was designed so that the Abbey

Centre could be expanded overtop of the pool to make it an indoor pool at some point in the future.

In addition to the Abbey Centre features already operational, excitement is building for features that are to come in the spring and summer of this year, said Kreklewich.

These include the outdoor playground, outdoor ďŹ tness equipment to be installed in the spring and the amphitheatre, construction of which is to begin this July. And of course, the opening of the aforementioned pool.

The Abbey Centre also has ďŹ tness classes and programs, like Zumba, yoga and spin class to name a few, which have been popular so far, said Kreklewich.

Water Meter Upgrade Program

Lacombe City Council Meetings are open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Meeting agendas are posted online at www.lacombe.ca by 3:00 p.m. the Friday before every Council Meeting.

In 2014, the City of Lacombe will embark on year one of a four year project to change out aging manual-read water meters within the city. The municipality’s current meter reading system is labour intensive, requiring staff to visually read 4300 water meters six times per year.

Reminder Aquatic Centre Holiday Hours Patrons are reminded that the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre will be closed on Good Friday, April 18. On Easter Monday, April 21, Public Swim goes from 1pm -3pm, and Family Swim is from 3pm -5pm.

Easter Holiday Weekend Waste Collection Schedule Changes Please note that due to the Good Friday public holiday, garbage and recycling normally picked up on Friday, April 18, will instead be picked up on Thursday, April 17. As well, due to the Easter Monday holiday, garbage and recycling normally picked on Monday, April 21, will instead be picked up to Tuesday, April 22.

We will be replacing this form of manual meter reading with a more efficient radio read system, so that Utilities staff can obtain water meter readings by driving past the water meters. Once this four year program is complete, staff will no longer need to frequently enter your property, inadvertently trample flowers, trip over down spouts, or cause other damage to obtain a water meter reading.

Benefits of the new system include:

If these areas are completed ahead of schedule then Neptune will move into the following areas next:

• Automatic read system means ‘estimated’ bi-monthly bills can be eliminated and accurate monthly billing can be introduced.

• Country Ridge

• Built into each meter is a memory that holds 90 days of water use data, making it easier to generate reports showing hourly water use when requested.

• The meter and the radio-read technology are built into the water meter.

• The Neptune meter is easy to install and in most cases will fit into the same space as the old meter.

• The meters also incorporate an alarm system that ‘flags’ the meter if the following conditions have been present in the past 90 days – no water flow, reverse water flow, water leak detection and water meter tampering.

The City has contracted Neptune Technology Group to install the new meters. Installations will commence on April 28, 2014, and will be carried out on an area by area basis. The initial areas the contractor will focus on are: • Hearthstone • Elizabeth Park • English Estates • Regency

Encore: Art and the Motorcycle

When do motorcycles and fine art share the same stage? Why, at the Art and the Motorcycle showcase, being held from 5 till 8pm on April 25, 2014, at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

This event is part of the 15th Encore Annual Sale and Celebration of Creative Expression.

Call to Artists for 2014 Public Art Project The City of Lacombe is looking for submissions for a public art project. The artist is to create a low maintenance, hardy, weather resistant, permanent three-dimensional artwork that integrates a water feature (fountain, spray, burbler, or aeration system), be of commercial/industrial grade and perform seasonally. Ride Captain Gasoline Alley Harley Davidson and the City of Lacombe are hosting over 25 motorcycles that have been skillfully airbrushed into rolling works of art, along with the artists who created them.

“Airbrush artists are often considered the low guys on the totem pole when it comes to art” is a sentiment event coordinator Maureen MacKenzie heard from several airbrush artists, and she deemed the Encore event as the perfect venue to feature their work. And so the call for artists and rides was put out through Belt Drive Betty and the Busted Knuckle Chronicles, local artists were contacted, and within a number of weeks registrations were full.

“Custom rides are coming in from as far away as Grand Prairie, Lloydminster and Okotoks, and we’re very excited to be hosting them during the Encore Art Sale and Celebration,” said MacKenzie.

The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Lacombe Arts Endowment Fund. Each year the fund provides $2,500

in arts grants to artists, writers, dancers & musicians in Lacombe and Lacombe County towards their continued education in their craft.

Advance tickets ($15) are on sale until April 21 in Lacombe at Harley Place Service and Sunny 94 FM on Highway 2A south, downtown at the Gallery on Main, Bladez Hair Company on 50 Street, and at City Hall. Generals sweep Regals to claim McKenzie Cup Bentley head to Ontario to defend their Allan Cup title

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express In another sweep, the Bentley Generals have claimed the McKenzie Cup and have advanced onto the Allan Cup. Last Saturday, Bentley won the best of ďŹ ve series in a three game sweep after defeating the Powell River Regals 6-5 in overtime. That win earned Bentley the McKenzie Cup and gives them the chance to defend their title as the Allan Cup Champions in Ontario next week.

Coach Ryan Tobler said that the series was very different from the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous series against the Innisfail Eagles where they clinched the Chinook Hockey League and provincial titles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was somewhat unique,â&#x20AC;? said Tobler. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was an adjustment period.â&#x20AC;?

Bentley won the ďŹ rst two games of the series by comfortable margins, but as it has been said before, the scoreboard is not always indicative of how close a game is.

Both Tobler and Bentley Generals centre Kyle Bailey said that was the case in this series. By the third game however, the Regals had started to come together as a team.

They even scored two goals in the last minute of regular play to tie the game 5-5 and force overtime. Bailey said the situation was reminiscent of the Generals previous series against Innisfail which they had also swept with a 6-5 overtime win. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something we were pretty familiar with, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happened to us quite a bit,â&#x20AC;? said Bailey. He added that while the position was familiar, the real comfort came from knowing that any of the players on that team could be counted on when the chips were down. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably the most comforting thing, there isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really any weak link.â&#x20AC;?

He added that it, while the Regals were at a disadvantage because they had never played as a team before, it would not be the ďŹ rst time where strong management had a led such a hastily constructed team to walk through the McKenzie Cup series and onto the Allan Cup. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For sure, it was a little bit concerning.â&#x20AC;?

Bailey said that the Generals were fortunate to be able to win the series in three games as it can become quite physically demanding to play more games at such a competitive level.

Wranglers claim gold at provincial championships

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Blackfalds Wranglers are still the champs.

After losing in the Heritage Junior Hockey League final to the Okotoks Bisons, the Wranglers redeemed themselves when they defeated the Grande Prairie JDA Kings over the weekend to bring home gold at the Investors Group Hockey Alberta Junior B Provincial Championships.

Coach Brian Lenz said that, while it would be preferred to take both the league and provincial titles, taking one of the two is not so bad. “I’d like to win them all, but I guess if your choice is one or the other we would take provincials.”

While the Wranglers final game of the championship was a 6-0 blowout, the journey there was not so easy. In fact, the Wranglers lost their first game of the tournament to the JDA Kings, the team they would later defeat in the final.

“We didn’t play that well in our first game.”

Lenz said that things were incredibly close at

the provincial tournament and all eight teams were one and one after their first two games. “That should tell you how close things were,” said Lenz, adding it was the first provincial tournament he had been at that was that tight.

Lenz said the real test and subsequent relief came in the semi-final against St. Albert when Blackfalds took advantage of a few lucky breaks and scored three goals within two minutes to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime and then score again in overtime to win the game.

He added he and the players were counting their lucky stars after that game and players and fans were so happy you would almost think the Wranglers had won the tournament and not just the semi-final.

“That’s what I said to the boys Sunday morning before we headed into the final,” said Lenz. “We used up all our luck last night (in the semi final). You better make sure you are ready to go today.” Indeed, the Wranglers were ready to go. Lenz said he was taken

Lenz said that he was told after the game that Grande Prairie had only been rotating through two lines, while Blackfalds used all four of their lines and therefore fatigue may have been a factor in the one-sided final. “It’s a tough grind, you play five games in four days.”

Not only that, but the Wranglers showcased their A-game in the final as well, added Lenz. He also said that, throughout the season Blackfalds has done exceptionally well considering they have so many young

players. Fourteen of the names on the Wranglers roster are rookies.

Size was a bit of disadvantage when it came to being physical on the ice however, Lenz said.

“We took a lot of bruises. We were probably the smallest team in the tournament but I think we were the fastest, so I think that proves size doesn’t mean everything.”

Overall, Lenz said the Wranglers players, coaches, staff, families and other fans were extremely content with the outcome.

“How can you not be happy?” said Lenz. “I don’t care if you won the league or not, you’re still going to be happy when you win provincials.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Woody Nook CRC displaying ‘The Creator’s Sacrifice’

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s a different take on a story at the heart of Christianity.

On April 8, Woody Nook Christian Reformed Church held the opening reception for their display of Kisemanito Pakitinasuwin, or the Creator’s Sacrifice, a collection of 17 paintings by Saskatchewan Cree artist Ovide Bighetty.

During the reception, attendees were treated to a performance by the Red Deer Aboriginal Dance Troupe and learned a little about what Bighetty was trying to accomplish with his paintings and his style of painting, the Woodland Style.

Unfortunately, Bighetty passed away two weeks ago, making the Woody Nook exhibition the first since his death.

However Lacombe history buff Marie Péron, who has a background in art history, was available to shed some light on his methods.

Peron said that Woodland Style can be characterized by the deep colours and strong black lines used between them.

She said the style can be compared to the stained glass pictures seen in cathedrals and churches.

Stained glass art uses bright colours broken by lines to create images and Woodland Style uses dark lines between colours to do the same.

As stained glass is often used to tell the story of Christ and his disciples, Bighetty is also using the Woodland Style to tell the story of Christ’s death and resurrection.

The Creator’s Sacrifice tells a story that is familiar to any Christian.

It is the story of Jesus’ journey from betrayal, to the death on the cross, to resurrection, commonly known as the Passion of the Christ or the Stations of the Cross.

However, Bighetty tells the story in a different way.

He uses traditional Cree symbolism and the Woodland Style to blend together the gospel’s telling of the story as well as aboriginal culture.

Bighetty’s paintings in the collection are heavy on First Nations symbolism, but are done in such a way that they will be familiar to either audience.

“Bighetty’s use of symbolism and cultural traditions is at once recognizable,” said Péron.

“His work includes identifiable Christian symbols like the sun,

the crown of thorns and the cross as well as First Nations symbols like the wampum belt, the birch tree (sundance pole) the eagle, the owl and the circle.”

Bighetty, who was raised Catholic but had strong ties to his Cree background as well, was commissioned by the Indian Métis Christian Fellowship to paint the series.

He drew his inspiration from the traditional gospel story as well as stories he heard from elders to create the images.

Reformed Church called reForming Relationships.

Pastor Neil de Koning said that the idea of reconciliation is a big objective for the church and it is part of the reason that this exhibit was created. de Koning went on to say that it is no secret the relationship between the aboriginal community and those of European descent can be quite strained at times.

Bringing the exhibit to Woody Nook is a way to trying and bridge the gap between the two cultures.

Appealing to people with an interest in first nations culture,

art, and religion, the Creator’s Sacrifice certainly bridges gaps between a number of demographics.

“It was just a wonderful way to bring a few things together,” said de Koning.

The Creator’s Sacrifice exhibit will be on display April 10, 12-13, 15-17, 19-20 and 22-24.

The gallery will be open from 9:30 a.m. to noon from Tuesdays to Thursday and noon to 4 p.m.

They really tried to hang me in 1981 What had I done so wrong 33 years ago?

I had written a column about the health hazards of sugar. The Canadian Sugar Institute asked The College of Physicians and Surgeons to discipline me for making false charges.

It was only after hours of testimony that democracy prevailed. The College decided that, as a journalist, I had the right to a personal opinion. So is the linking of sugar to heart disease a new idea?

A report in the journal, JAMA Internal Medicine, claims that those who consume 25% of more of their daily calories from added sugar are three times more likely to die of heart disease. The Heart and Stroke Foundation is now asking the government to develop guidelines for sugar consumption. I wonder where they were in 1981. The only support I received then was from readers.

But associating excess sugar to heart disease is not a new idea. For instance, Dr. John Judkin, formerly professor of physiology at

JONES London University, London, England, made headlines 42 years ago when he reported that cholesterol was not the cause of coronary heart disease.

Judkin pointed out there was correlation between the intake of sucrose and heart attack. For instance, a study conducted in 15 countries revealed that as the population consumed more sugar there was a dramatic increase in coronary disease.

Long before I was charged by the Canadian Sugar Institute I warned readers of the potential dangers of consuming too much sugar. I recall being at a medical meeting and having lunch with one of the provincial ministers of health. He was unaware

that there were 10 tsp. of sugar in a cola drink. In fact, most people have no idea that this silent ingredient is in many of our daily foods. Parents start the sugar binge at breakfast when they give children breakfast cereals that are 50% sugar.

Surely it is about time that health organizations get the message that sugar is a factor in caloric intake.

After all, they’re coping with today’s epidemic of obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart attack.

But as much as I have criticized the ‘white devil’ for years, it’s not the only culprit. It’s the total calories consumed that causes these epidemics, so don’t listen to anyone who says calories don’t count. That’s an outright lie.

The average person needs about 1,500 calories a day. The next time you purchase packaged foods look at their calorie count. You will be amazed at how easy it is to eat 1,500 calories.

Gravies are considered sauces made with the pan drippings of either meat or poultry, and thus basics of sauce making

COOKING are fundamental knowledge. The functions of sauces are to add flavour, moistness, richness and appearance to prepared foods. To achieve this we need three elements of the sauce or gravy - a liquid, a thickener and flavour. I realize ham is also very popular, but for this Easter example, the focus will be on turkey gravy.

The liquid for gravies is simply the juice from the poultry with additional broth and/or wine. The thickener will be a roux (pronounced ‘roo’), a cooked combination of equal weighed amounts of fat and flour.

Additional flavours will be created from roasted vegetables, herbs and seasonings.

Always cook turkey on a rack inside the roaster as it prevents the bottom half of the turkey from boiling in its own juices.

Below the rack should be a combination of a few bay leaves with rough chopped onion, celery, carrot and garlic. As the turkey cooks the liquid is needed for basting however excess juices should be removed occasionally (and reserved) to aid in the caramelization of the vegetables.

Once cooked, remove the turkey from the pan, drain and reserve the remaining liquid and allow the fat and juices to separate. Add a bit of the fat back to the roast-

ing pan along with some flour and cook on a medium-low heat stovetop with the vegetables for a few minutes. This process will cook out the starchy raw flour taste and help in the final browning of the vegetables. It should be fairly thick and pasty.

Slowly deglaze the pan with some white wine or broth. Deglazing is the process of removing the browned bits of flavour from the pan and incorporating them into the sauce. Incorporate the reserved turkey juices (not the fat) and additional broth (or additional broth and white wine) gradually to avoid lumping. While heating through, continue to add enough broth/wine until you have reached the thickness that you want to achieve. Remember, the full thickening power of the roux will not take effect until the gravy reaches a full boil.

The vegetable pieces and herbs can now be removed by the aid of a wire mesh strainer. Taste and season the gravy with salt and cracked pepper before serving.

Additional herbs such as thyme, sage, and oregano can be used but should be in minimum amounts to prevent from overpowering the gravy. Dried herbs should be added during the cooking process of the roux, as they will need re-hydration time to release their flavour. Fresh herbs are more delicate and should be added with the liquid, once the pan is deglazed.

Whatever type of gravy or sauce you are making, remember one important rule always create depth of flavour by adding a variety of complimenting tastes rather than just one bold main ingredient. For example a tomato sauce made only by reducing diced tomatoes will only taste like tomatoes. However, add wine, broth, onions, garlic, herbs, etc. to the cooking process and your sauce will have character.
