Coenzyme Q10 (also called CoQ10 or ubiquinone) is a natural substance vital to human cellular energy production. CoQ10 is also involved in maintaining normal heart function, and it is an antioxidant, scavenging free radicals throughout the body. CoQ10 is required by every cell in our body and is the key to chemical reactions that produce cellular energy. Just as an automobile engine with poor spark plugs chokes, sputters and dies, without enough CoQ10 (our cellular spark plug) our health can break down, resulting in all kinds of degenerative diseases. Studies show that CoQ10 may be effective for congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, and gum disease.

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for energy production; for nervous system function as it is needed to produce myelin, the fatty substance that forms a protective sheath around nerves; for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps with memory and learning; for the synthesis of red blood cells; for producing the genetic materials, DNA and RNA. It can help depression and give you energy. Most vitamin B12 comes from animal source foods and is deficient in strict vegetarian diets. Many elderly people suffering from neurological impairment find that B12 supplementation greatly improves their cognitive function. Shift workers, too, can benefit from sublingual B12. It’s well established that shift workers have more trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Poor sleep quality is probably why they have greater susceptibility to illnesses, including cancer, and have more accidents than other sectors of the population.

April 6 – 12. Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers for the work they do to enhance health care delivery throughout the region. Volunteer recognition events will be held at many local hospitals and residential care facilities throughout the region during the month of April. In other areas, gifts or cards are offered as thanks. Interior Health is supported by an estimated 4,800 volunteers. “I really cannot say enough about our volunteers, said Norman Embree, Interior Health Board Chair. “We literally could not do what we do without their support. In the West Kootenay, Interior Health is celebrating volunteers such as Judy Sorensen,

whose volunteer program brings the beauty of art to the residents of the Columbia View Lodge residential care site in Trail. Residents’ awe-inspiring paintings now line the halls of Columbia View and other locations in the region. Sorensen also took it upon herself to research the therapeutic benefits of art, particularly for individuals with dementia, and conducts her art program in a way that draws from everything art can do to engage and support residents. “For me, volunteering is just part of what you do. Seeing the residents’ reactions when they see what they have done is very rewarding, said Sorensen. “It’s important for me to treat people how I would want to be treated. When I have

to go to residential care, I would like to have people come by and support me with things like this. In the East Kootenay, Interior Health is recognizing volunteers like Odette Rouse in Cranbrook, whose dedicated support of the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary Society over the last 32 years helped turn a modest thrift store in a rented basement space into a thriving independent business and part of the community. “I was very lucky in my own life, so I felt it was important to give back. I truly believe what we are doing with our store serves multiple purposes. Our main goal, of course, is supporting our hossee Volunteer page 5

Engage young people with volunteerism ties abound during the summer or on weekends, when young people aren’t busy at school. Many different areas are open to teens who want to satisfy a need to contribute to the greater good. These might include staffing an organization’s information desk, coaching a sports team, getting involved in a fundraising activity, or working at a kiosk during a charity event. Volunteering helps

young people grow into informed, concerned adults and gives them the opportunity to become good citizens. It gives young people the chance to address the issues they care about and believe in. It’s not surprising that volunteering is something they will be proud of for a whole lifetime.

Photo submitted

Submitted Every year countless young people undertake volunteer work, whether as part of a school project or from personal interest. Early altruistic and formative experiences like these have a great influence on their future adult lives. During National Volunteer Week 2012, which takes place from April 15 to 21, let us all remind ourselves of the benefits of youth volunteerism. By becoming a volunteer, young people acquire a sense of responsibility and a feeling of belonging that will follow them throughout their lives. As well as giving them a first work experience, volunteering will also allow them to develop autonomy while they broaden their horizons. Feeling useful When young people embark on volunteer work, ideally around the age of twelve, they learn about themselves and become more familiar with their community. Getting involved gives them the enormous pleasure of feeling useful. Volunteering is also a beneficial experience

for young people when the time comes for them to join the job market. Their proven commitment to soci-

ety will reassure future employers. Summer and weekends Volunteer opportuni-

School District 5 is inviting all three year olds to school!

Ready, Set, Learn is an initiative that recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide relevant resources and information. All public elementary schools in Southeast Kootenay School District will be offering an opportunity for all three year olds to come to their neighbourhood school (children born in 2011 who have turned three by the date of the RSL event). This event is a partnership between the province, the district, and the early childhood teachers in Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Jaffray, and Elkford. Ready, Set, Learn will include opportunities such as a tour of the school, a visit to the kindergarten classroom, activities, refreshments, displays or presentations by school children. Parents and caregivers will receive helpful tips for supporting their preschooler’s learning and development. They will also be provided with information about local services available. Each child will receive a learning kit. Four year olds, those children who will be entering kindergarten in September 2014, will be invited to Kindergarten Orientation in their neighborhood school. New SD5 student learning director

School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education is pleased to announce the hiring of Jason Tichauer as the new Director of Student Learning. This position, previously held by Doug McPhee until his retirement last month, is responsible for the implementation, support, supervision and evaluation of educational programs in the District. According to Board Chair, Frank Lento, McPhee has offered his assistance transitioning Tichauer into the position of Director of Student Learning. “Doug and Jason are very similar when it comes to their commitment to and passion for student success. While it’s difficult to say goodbye to Doug, the Board feels very confident in Jason’s ability to take up the torch.” Born in North Vancouver and raised in Squamish, BC, Tichauer received both his Bachelor of Education and Master of Education (leadership) at the University of Victoria. Currently the Principal of Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS), Tichauer began his career teaching at Fort Nelson Secondary School in 1994. He joined SD5 eight years ago in 2006 as Principal of Sparwood Secondary School. According to Tichauer, despite how much he’ll miss working with students on a daily basis he’s excited to take on the challenges of the Director of Student Learning position. “The idea of taking my passion for raising student achievement and the programs that support it to a district-wide level is extremely rewarding”. Lento says Tichauer is a strong leader, especially when it comes to letting others take the reigns. “Jason understands that leadership is the forefront of twentyfirst century learning. He recognizes leadership isn’t about telling people what they should do but about letting people excel at what they do best.” Tichauer will continue in the capacity of principal at Mount Baker Secondary School until the end of June, at the same time assuming the duties of Director of Student Learning beginning April 1st, 2014.

Please check your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy. If you do not have sewer backup insurance you should contact your broker and arrange to have it included in your policy. The City of Cranbrook does its best to maintain the sewer systems, but has little control over what foreign objects may be deposited in them causing blockage. The City will not accept any claim for back up of sewers. Claims of an accidental or unforeseen nature should be processed through your Homeowner’s insurance.

Childhood vaccines

The recent outbreak of Measles in of BC has sparked a passionate debate about the increasing numbers of parents who are choosing not to vaccinate their children. There is growing frustration among those who adamantly support vaccines and equal kick back from those who oppose their use. For those in support, there is no reason not to vaccinate and they charge parents who don't vaccinate as being responsible for the outbreaks. Those in opposition to vaccines don't vaccinate their children out of a fear of harming their child or for religious reasons. It is a complex issue at the centre of medicine, personal choice and religious freedoms. Clearly, childhood vaccine’s have been a powerful health tool, eradicating some diseases like smallpox. This accomplishment, however, has come with a price. There are those who still hold to the notion that vaccines are 100% safe, a belief that is simply not true. Ask the parent who has a vaccine injured child how they feel about childhood vaccinations and they will share

with you the tragedy and heartbreak of their loss. Every medical intervention comes with risk and the problem with vaccines is that we don't really know how safe they are. It should be shocking to learn that there has never been a large comparative study examining the health outcomes of children who have been vaccinated and those who have not been vaccinated. It is the only widely used medical intervention that has not been studied in this way. This fact helps to underscore the dilemma: vaccines clearly are of benefit but we do not fully understand their risks. It is the lack of safety data that scares many parents away from vaccinating their child. The general medical consensus is that the benefit of vaccination is worth the risk however when you put yourself in the shoes of a parent who's child was injured by a vaccine one can understand the decision made by some parents to avoid vaccines. I encourage parents to educate themselves about this charged and complex topic by reading from sources on both sides of the issue.

Sattva Training, Now at Core Fitness:

Sattva Training Centre started as an independent training studio situated near Cranbrook. We offered tailored training programs based on posture, range of motion (muscle length/tension) and primal pattern assessments which consist in looking at seven key movements that are necessary Aurélie for survival in our developWiedemann mental environment. Those movements are: squat, lunge, push, pull, bend, twist and gait. The creation of our programs is based on the training philosophy developed by Paul Chek, an internationally renowned expert in the field of corrective and high-performance exercise kinesiology. These programs are always preceded by an in-depth inquiry of a person’s physical imbalances in order to restore optimal posture through exercise and/or lifestyle changes. The ultimate goal of such a method is to bring clients closer to their genetic potential, in other words, closer to their hidden inner athlete. In addition, all programs include a Holistic Lifestyle Coaching aspect which addresses elements such as stress levels, what you eat, when you eat, optimal hydration, as well as sleep and wake cycles. We are excited to announce that our training practice can now be found at Core Fitness. The partnership between Core Fitness and Sattva Training will offer the best of both worlds: access to a great variety of training and cardio equipment as well as our tailored “CHEK” approved programs and appraisals. We will also offer new packages such as “Group Training Assessments & Program Creation” as well as “Semi-Private Training Sessions”. With one million of its new high-tech drivers’ licences in use, the B.C. government is preparing to use them for access to medical records, applying for student loans and a range of other uses. The new driver’s licence was introduced a year ago, with a digital chip that replaces the existing medical CareCard system. The health ministry estimated that there were more than nine million CareCards in circulation, about twice as many as there are residents of B.C. Andrew Wilkinson, minister of technology, innovation and citizens’ services, released results of a public consultation on the new cards this week. With digital security similar to bank cards, he said the public appears prepared to use them to apply for prescription renewals, birth, death and marriage certificates, voter registration and criminal records checks. Secure online access to such government services would require passwords to be issued, “robust” computer programs to be completed and at least half of B.C. residents to have the new cards, Wilkinson said. They are being issued as current drivers’ licences expire, and the new services could be available by the end of 2015. Proof of identity for medical care may also be used for online booking of medical appointments. “First of all we need to make sure that only people who are entitled to health care services in British Columbia are getting them, and secondly we have to make sure that we have the right person, the right John Smith who shows up in the emergency room after an accident and can’t speak for himself,” Wilkinson said. “With the services card they’ll have a unique identifier that connects them with the proper medical records and establishes that they’re entitled to care.” The cards are issued to replace the current driver’s licences, for the same $75 fee. For people who don’t drive, a similar card with only medical identity is available at no charge.

Kia taking on the small cars from the big guys

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-selling cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup. Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships. The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. Looks The Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Sold with a new base 2.0L engine or an optional 1.6L turbo engine, there are varied looks depending on which trim is chosen. The non-turbo Forte5 gets a front grille similar to the sedan with a smaller lower intake and a larger grille opening. The Forte5 SX turbo gets the same grille as the Koup, with the opposite

Few things in the development of a new car are more crucial than the name. In the case of a bland or mediocre car, it’s the last chance the marketers have to generate some buzz. That may well be why some of the most ordinary cars have wound up with some of the fiercest and flashiest names. Here are five inappropriately named cars: 1. Chevrolet Sprint — The Sprint was built by Suzuki for Chevrolet. Powered by a rather anemic three-cylinder engine, its acceleration off the line resembled not so much a sprint but more of a drunken stumble. Its Suzuki-badged counterpart was known by an equally inappropriate name, the Swift. 2. Mercury Bobcat — A bobcat is a rather fierce North American wild cat. The Mercury Bobcat, on the other hand, was essentially a fancy Ford Pinto over laden with chrome trim and other options that added on additional pounds, sacrificing what little performance the Pinto possessed. While the feline Bobcat is plentiful in the wild, the Mercury version is all but extinct. 3. Hyundai Excel — The Excel was first car sold by Hyundai in the U.S., and given the top-to-bottom excellence of the current Hyundai lineup, it’s probably a car they’d prefer to forget. Dart GT could be edgier but delivers value

‘‘

Whether taking the GT for a drive in the city or on the open road, it does have some solid legs to stand on.

’’

Alexandra Straub By Alexandra Straub

The Dodge Dart has held its own in a sporty compact segment where competition is fierce. Perhaps it is because of its value, the various engine choices or that it has some pretty cool features (like available under-the-frontseat-cushion storage) and a fresh style – inside and out – the Dart seems to be a hit. Two years in, Chrysler has loaded it up with an engine full of gusto, unique styling cues and added a couple of letters on the back and now we have the Dodge Dart GT. What sets it apart from its siblings are a stretched-down grille and LED headlights. You’ll find the rear clad with the ‘Racetrack’ LED lights that run the full length of the trunk. Then there’s a set of 18inch wheels come standard on this vehicle along with a 2.4L, MultiAir, 4-cylinder

Tigershark engine, matched with a 6-speed manual transmission, that brings to the pavement 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. Of all the characteristics I like about this trim of Dart, I think its transmission is the weakest link. In previous reviews of other Dart models – like the 1.4L, Turbocharged version with 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque – the gear throws are, in my opinion, too long to really give it that edge and sporty vibe that it needs to compete with vehicles like the VW GTI, Honda Civic Si or even the Ford Focus ST. The gear throws are long and the clutch has little weight to it, taking away the performance aspect of the GT that it should have. On the flip side, the light clutch works favourably in the urban environment. This setup makes being stuck in traffic bearable. Getting back to the gearbox, I really wanted to like the Dart more. I really did. So I concocted scenarios in my mind to figure out a way to not be so sad about its lack of panache. I think I found one. Buyers of the GT will like what they get for the value. After all, it has a starting MSRP of $21,995. That’s thousands less than the aforementioned competitors. And some buyers of vehicles who want that extra kick don’t necessarily need all the sports sedan-like characteristics. They want power but in a comfortable and affordable package. Furthermore, they enjoy added touches like a leath-

er-wrapped heated steering wheel, GT specific sport leather seats, a Parkview rear backup camera and more. The interior has a pleasant look to it and it’s very agreeable to drive. On the highway, special attention from designers and engineers were paid to make sure you drive in a quiet cabin. Minimal road noise entered the GT’s cabin, allowing my passengers and I to enjoy the musical stylings of various bands being listened to on the Alpine premium stereo system with nine speakers (an additional $1,295 for this sun and sound package.) The sun portion of the package adds a power express open/ close sunroof to the mix. After I switched into this mindset, I found I was able to alleviate my frustrations of what the GT didn’t have, but what it did have. Additionally, a feature that I love about the Dart – and all other Dodge/Jeep/Chrys-

ler products – is the Uconnect media interface. The GT comes standard with the 8.4-inch touchscreen and is a dream to work with. Large icons, easy prompts and a no-fuss approach to pairing your handheld device to the Bluetooth system all come standard. Whether taking the GT for a drive in the city or on the open road, it does have some solid legs to stand on. Visit www.dodge.ca more information

Clint Kary Sales

“Come see me for the best automotive sales experience.”

Confessions of a Curber

Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer. Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fine for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is flexible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice? The first two cheaper vehicles sold quickly. The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask? Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the first two. I had no information on the last. So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.” I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back. Four days later, I got a call from a young

“Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!” woman. She asked if the car would fit a family of four. “Definitely!” I practically screamed. I was a wreck during this sale. I just needed to get rid of this car – fast. I told the nice lady the details of the car. Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice! I told her I was in a hurry to visit my mum in the hospital. She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine. I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to find me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

*How can a stolen vehicle be sold? Curbers often break the law by bridging a title. Instead of registering a vehicle in their name within 10 days after a purchase, as required, they leave it in the name of the previous owner. This keeps their name out of the chain of title and from being caught with a stolen vehicle or one that would not be able to be registered or insured for another reason.

Buying used? We’re looking out for you. Find out how at WatchoutforWalt.com

Helping you get through motoring madness

do the ‘‘mostPeople stupid things to get one car length ahead and take enormous risks such as running red lights just to get home early for dinner.

Keith Morgan

’’

By Keith Morgan

Dear Reader: After I get this off my chest, I am going to feel a whole lot better but I doubt you will. For it is my hope that you will be mad as hell and want to tell. We will get to that later so bear with me. I have been writing about cars, driving, and traffic safety for more than 25 years. I got into by accident, no pun intended. I had been covering the often-grisly crime beat for some years when the

late Vancouver Police Supt. John Lucy told me in the late 80s that he was transferring to the traffic division. I blanched. This guy had set up the strike force and dealt with vice in the big city. “You want blood and guts, Morgan, come and talk to me in traffic,” he said dramatically. I did and he was absolutely right. The needless carnage on our roads was, and is to this day, almost unbelievable. I say almost because the more you observe human nature the less incredible motoring mayhem appears. Big John had a common sense response for such reckless behaviour: “Supper is served at the same time every night . . . . is it really worth the risk just so you can sit around and wait an extra five minutes before heading to the table?” Simple math reveals that in order to shave even five minutes off a typical commute you have to exceed the speed limit excessively and run some very late reds. That kind of driving drives me crazy and now we get to the nub of this column. Telling you what sends me off the edge is a form of therapy that invariably evolves into group therapy. Hence, our weekly “What Drives U Crazy?” spot in Driveway, in which we encourage you

to reveal what poor driving habits, send you off the deep end. Your correspondent also has a less selfish wish that by identifying this appalling behaviour we could educate the sources of our collective annoyance. I know that might be considered dreaming but let’s give it the old college try.

When I talk about what burns me at gatherings, people usually say “don’t get me started” then proceed to regale me with their pet peeves. As that is the purpose of this exercise, let me get you started! Five things that drive me nuts, a short putt I know. 1. Those who either won’t move more than their front

wheels into an intersection on a green light or remain behind the line. 2. Drivers who let cars stack up behind them because they want to make a left over a solid white centre line. 3. Weaver birds who race down the curb lane then cut into traffic when they near a parked car. 4. Impatient folks who try

to swing around you dangerously as you proceed to park at the curbside. 5. People who signal a left as the light changes to green .... That last example makes me want to ram the offender through the intersection. Many more manouevres needle me. However, I’ll get off the couch now because

I think I may have got you riled enough to share your road rage. What Drives U Crazy? – Tell me. You will feel much better for having done so. I promise. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

XL-ent fuel consumption

The world’s most fuel-efficient hybrid car, the Volkswagen XL1, will go on display in in London alongside other Designs of the Year award nominees. A team led by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for VW, designed the Volkswagen XL1. It is a limited series production two-seater car that explores the limits of energy efficiency for a roadlegal production vehicle. The design brief for the XL1 was to produce a ‘one litre’ car – that is to say, a car that uses one litre of fuel per 100 km. The resulting vehicle uses just 0.9 litres per 100 km.

To achieve this fuel consumption figure, the XL1 was aerodynamically optimised, adopting the classic ‘tear drop’ shape and utilising innovations such as removing traditional wing mirrors and replacing them with small cameras called e-Mirrors which transmit exterior images to interior displays. For more details on the XL1, visit www.volkswagen. co.uk.

EyeSight™ is a driver-assist system, which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions and may not react in every situation. The system is not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to the road, and the driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. Finally, even with the advanced technology activated, a driver with good vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system. See Owner’s Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations. EyeSight™ is available on the 2014 Outback 2.5i Limited Package (ED2 LE) or 3.6R Limited Package (ED2 LE6). ▲Ratings of “Good” are the highest rating awarded for performance in five safety tests (moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, rollover and rear) conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) (www.iihs.org). To earn a 2013 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must receive a “Good” rating in at least four of the five tests and a “Good” or “Acceptable” rating in the fifth test. †Fuel consumption figure rating posted by Natural Resources Canada of 6.5 L/100 km (highway) for a 2014 Subaru Outback equipped with continuously variable automatic transmission and a 60 L fuel tank capacity. Marvelling at a new Mercedes in Marseille

technically sophisticated and a pleasure to drive.

’’

Bob McHugh By Bob McHugh

Marseille, France – The mid-sized C-Class is the most popular and affordable Mercedes-Benz sedan and about 8.5 million of them have been produced, since it was originally introduced in 1993. Mercedes engineering typically operates on a seven-year “circle of life” production run and an all-new generation of C-Class will arrive in Canada, as a 2015 model year vehicle, this summer. In brief, it’s a bigger and better C-Class, however, real progress is in the details. This C-Class is lighter, safer, comes with a choice of two more powerful (yet more fuel-efficient) new engines, uses even more advanced technologies, plus its body is more aerodynamic and, to my eyes, better looking. The South of France global launch location, even though I had to share it with over 800 other auto hacks, was another nice bonus more later... There’s no pricing available at this time, but we do know the initial trim levels offered in Canada will be a C300 and a C400. A sporty AMG edition, called the C63, will also be added to the line in January 2015. Although not official, a diesel edition is also ex-

safety features is simply amazing. It includes almost everything that’s available in the top-line S-Class, which is touted as the world’s safest car. Intelligent Drive is an optional suite of technologies that includes autonomous braking with pedestrian recognition, a low-speed heavy traffic auto-pilot feature, active parking assist and a 360-degree camera setup with numerous views of immediate surroundings. Bordering on frivolous, there’s an Air-Balance in-car perfuming system ... to prolong that new-car Mercedes smell. Another one is a GPSlinked climate-control system tech feature that automatically switches it to “recirculation” mode when a C-Class is driven into a tunnel. The test drive actually did include a few tunnels and there are lots of them in and under Marseille. It’s the second largest city in France and its busiest port with numerous ferries to other Mediterranean destinations. Our drive route took us out of the city on a circular mostly rural route around the outskirts of Marseille and ended at the picturesque small harbor community of Cassis. A mountain drive along the Route des Cretes (Route of the Ridges) was spectacular. It’s a narrow, winding highelevation road with pull-offs at numerous view locations. Even with the (100 kg) weight reduction, this C-Class is sublimely stable on the road. The switch to a full electronic assist rack and pinion steering system, called Direct Steer, is also flawless. There are fuel economy and active safety benefits. Inside the seating is typical Mercedes with easy to find power controls on the door panel. Generous in size, yet excellent support and a good range of adjustable elements didn’t give my weak back a reason to complain, even af-

ter many hours of driving. The restyled dash is an elegant and less fussy design, thanks mainly to a new Touchpad controller that eliminates a multitude of switches. It can

recognise both single and multi-finger gestures, wiping movements, zoom finger gestures, even user handwriting. That said, the stand-alone display screen looks out of

place, as if an afterthought IPad was attached to the dash. Overall, this C-Class is sure to please both purists and newcomers. Superbly engineered, technically sophisti-

While it produces more power than the outgoing base V6, I found the initial power surge, when you push on the gas pedal, overly aggressive. In fairness, the North American edition will come with different throttle mapping. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 in the C400, on the other hand, is a beauty. It can pump-out up to 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. More importantly, it does so in a quieter, smoother and effortless fashion that most drivers expect when at the wheel of a Mercedes. Both engines come with idle fuel saving start/stop systems and are mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The list of standard and available high-tech active

Questions to ask in a home inspection by David Roberts Buying a House? Should You Have A Home Inspection? Approximately 75% of residential real estate

Construction Questions What’s home warranty all about? by Menno Dueck Home warranty insurance is construction defect insurance, provided on new single-family and multi-family homes built for sale in BC, and protects against various construction defects for specific periods of time. Quality standards are always up to each individual contractor/builder. Residential builders are licensed through the Homeowner Protection Office (HPO), a branch of BC Housing. HPO “serves buyers of new homes and people arranging for new homes to be built, homeowners (particularly owners of homes covered by home warranty insurance), developers, residential builders, building envelope renovators and owner builders”. Home warranty insurance coverage, better known as 2-5-10 home warranty insurance includes 2 years coverage on materials and labour, 5 years coverage on the building envelope (components that separate indoor from outdoor such as exterior walls, foundation, roof, windows and doors), 10 years coverage on building structural defects. Check out www.hpo. bc.ca for further information, descriptions and limitations. Warranty applies to the home, not the owner and is automatically transferred to the new owner if sold within the warranty period. If purchasing a resale, review the policy, confirm coverage expiry dates and ask the owner for a claims history report. You might

consider making this a condition of sale. The New Homes Registry, online at HPO, will tell you whether the house has a policy, who the carrier is, or if the home was “owner built”. Owner builders are authorized by HPO to build a new home for their personal use, are not required to be licensed by HPO nor arrange for 3rd party home warranty insurance on that home. An owner builder must “build or directly manage the construction of their new home themselves. If an owner builder engages a builder, construction manager, project manager, or any third party to perform these functions, both the owner builder and the hired construction manager/builder are committing offences” and could face fines and/or prosecution. Owner builders do not usually have home warranty insurance to rely on in case of construction defects, nor would subsequent purchasers; the owner builder is ultimately responsible for a period of 10 years. With the exception of a few special circumstances, an ownerbuilt home may not be offered for sale, sold, or rented any earlier than one year after the new home has been built; the intention is for the home to be for personal use. HPO has a well detailed information bulletin for owner builders on their website. Missed an article or two? Find them at http://www. DueckEnterprises.com/blog.html

transactions involve a licenced Home Inspector. Knowledge before you buy allows you to make informed decisions and avoid costly surprises. A licensed Home Inspector will inspect and document the condition, and end of life of the essential components of a house. Roofing: Is the roof
