Niedermayer Hockey School offering two scholarships via contest BA R RY CO ULT E R
One of the nation’s most renowned hockey schools is now open for registrations. And to mark the 14th annual edition of the Niedermayer Hockey School, Edge School and Rob and Scott Niedermayer are giving away two scholarships, in a contest via the Daily Townsman. See details below. Rob Niedermayer spoke to the Daily Townsman this week about the school, and its involvement in the community.
“We both attended hockey schools here when we were kids, and I know how much fun we had,” he said. “So this is a nice way to give back (to the community), and you get to meet a lot of nice kids and see them come along in hockey. The Niedermayer Hockey School, which runs in the first full week of August, is open to male and female players of all levels, aged six to 14. Players are grouped according to their skill level and
age group, and spend eight hours a day on hockey matters, including on ice training, dry land training, read and react, cross training or pool time, hockey talk and lunch. “The kids get to pick up on a lot of stuff, and it prepares them for the upcoming season,” Rob said. And the school draws young hockey scholars from far and wide, with an international reach.

Mount Baker student Darynn Bednarczyk has placed first in the annual poster contest put on by the Royal Canadian Legion. The national contest covers posters, essays and poems. As well as a $1,000 prize, first-place winners get a trip to Ottawa to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony there.

For the past few years, Darynn Bednarczyk has entered the annual Legion poster contest without hearing back. This year, however, on her final year of eligibility, the Mount Baker Secondary senior made it all the way to the top. She has been awarded first place in her cate-
gory in the national contest. Bednarczyk said the difference is that this year she drew on much more personal sources for the work of art. “I decided I was going to do a tribute to my grandpa, because he fought in World War II. I drew a portrait of him and used all his war photos and his medals,” Bednarczyk said. “In past years I
just went with pictures off of Google and it didn’t have the personal relevance to me. This one was very personal, and that’s what the judges saw in it.” She first won the Cranbrook level, then the zone level and then she was notified by email that she had won in B.C.

IH offering immunizations for kindergarten-aged kids BARRY COULTER
This week it was reported that the 320 confirmed cases, mostly involving children, is the largest ever outbreak of measles recorded in B.C. While these cases are mostly confined to the Fraser Valley, it is a stark reminder of the importance of immunization, especially for children. And in timely fashion, the Cranbrook Health Unit is offering immunization clinics next week for kindergarten-aged children, to make sure kids’ immune systems are ready to go.
“Recent outbreaks of pertussis and measles in B.C. have highlighted the importance of keeping disease rates low, by keeping immunization rates high,” Interior Health advised in a press release. Kindergarten boosters are being offered to children between the ages of 4 and 6 at the Cranbrook Health Unit. Clinics are scheduled for April 7, 11 and 14 and appointments can be booked by calling 250-420-2207.
