Keeping history alive through Veterans Voices Allan Cameron aims to tell the compelling stories of war survivors

O

ne Sylvan Lake man is working to keep an important piece of Canada’s history alive.

On March 27th, Allan Cameron, executive director/producer and founder of Veteran’s Voices of Canada visited Lacombe to share a little bit about what he does with the community.

Veterans Voices of Canada is a project that documents the experiences of Canada’s veterans.

To date, Cameron has interviewed over 700 veterans and documented as well as shared their stories.

Cameron said that it is vital that Canada’s veterans have their stories documented. It is a sad truth that many of the country’s veterans, particularly those from the Second World War, are dying off simply because of age.

He said that if we don’t seize the opportunity to share their stories now, it will be lost entirely. “If we don’t do the documentation, it’s gone forever,� said Cameron. “You don’t get a second shot at it.�

In his presentation, Cameron told the story of how he began Veterans Voices, a little bit about what the organization does today, and shared with the audience a condensed version of an interview with a local Lacombe veteran.

Cameron grew up hearing stories of his uncles’ exploits during the Second World War. It was hearing those amazing stories that led to him seeking out stories from other veterans today.

In particular, Cameron’s Uncle Perley was the one veteran whose story stuck out the most to Cameron and the one he heard the most.

It took some time for Uncle Perley to open up about his experience during the war, but eventually he agreed to let Cameron do a proper interview with him.

Unfortunately, before the interview could be conducted, Cameron’s uncle passed away. But, Cameron said that was what ďŹ rst gave him the desire to begin the Veterans Voices project. “Before (my uncle) passed away, he said, ‘Allan, this is a good

So, he started seeking out other veterans to interview them and record their stories. It began as a personal project for Cameron, but today it has become so much more.

Through doing the Veterans Voices project, Cameron also had uncovered the story of his Great Uncle Ernest Hill who was killed in a skirmish with German forces on July 25, 1944 after ďŹ ghting his way to Tilly-la-Campagne.

However, it wasn’t until Cameron shared Hill’s story in an article by Our Canada that he was contacted by a man who had been part of Hill’s unit that Cameron learned the full details of that story.

Cameron shared that story with those at the presentation and the details of how he came to

learn it.

He said the story was signiďŹ cant because if Cameron had not been doing Veterans Voices of Canada, he never would have learned the whole story behind his great uncle’s death.

Today, what keeps Cameron interested in Veterans Voices is the obvious – getting to hear the incredible stories from Canada’s veterans.

He added that he considers himself lucky to be the one who hears the stories ďŹ rst-hand from the veterans themselves. “A lot of the families (of the veterans) don’t hear the stories I do.â€?

When Cameron ďŹ rst started Veterans Voices of Canada, he approached local Legion branches for information to ďŹ nd veterans and stories to document. Now, he and the project have gained enough recognition that most of

those veterans approach him directly. “The ďŹ rst place you’re going to go when you think of veterans is the Legion,â€? said Cameron. “So the ďŹ rst couple years was going to the Legion and getting credibility.â€?

The majority of interviews done by Cameron are from veterans in Central Alberta as that is the area easiest for him to cover.

However, Cameron has conducted interviews across the country with veterans from the Second World War right up to the war in Afghanistan.

Veterans Voices of Canada has grown since being founded

by Cameron in 2006. Cameron has even been able to branch out and develop a spinoff of Veterans Voices known as War Witnesses, which documents the stories of civilian survivors of the war who lived under German occupation

and tells the story through their eyes.

Currently Veterans Voices is heavily involved in a Return to Normandy project.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of D-day and Cameron said Veterans Voices is trying to enable a group of D-day veterans and their families to travel to Normandy for the recognition of this historic day.

The goal of the project is to raise enough funds so that the veterans will not have to pay their way there.

Church joins organization in fight against human trafficking

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express No one ever said buying jewelry couldn’t make a difference in the world.

On March 31st, the Lacombe Evangelical Free Church held a ladies jewelry and dessert night to raise funds and awareness for Global Wonders, a venture by the Servants Anonymous Foundation working to rehabilitate victims of the sex trade and fighting against the exploitation and trafficking of women.

Lise, Global Wonders sales and marketing coordinator for the Servants Anonymous (SA) Foundation (whose surname is protected by the Servants Anonymous anonymity agreement) said that the SA Foundation focuses mainly on the recovery and rehabilitation aspect of the sex trade.

The organization has projects in a number of countries including Nepal, where the jewelry sold Monday night is made.

In addition to these projects, the SA Foundation also trains other organizations in its recovery model and works with other programs all over Canada and the United States.

Amber Mack, one of the event’s organizers said that after Lise had made a presentation at the church previously, many of the ladies from the church wanted to host jewelry parties in support of Global Wonders and the Servants Anonymous Foundation.

Since interest was so high, they decided to host the event at the church instead and increase their exposure a bit more.

Mack said that when organizing the event, it was also important to her and the other organizers that the evening not be focused just on fundraising, but on education and raising awareness as well.

Lise added that this is a big part of the SA Foundation’s job and that a large part of her presentation focuses on letting people

know what they can do to help. “Because human trafficking is in the media a bit more, people are more aware of it, but they are usually quite overwhelmed by it and don’t know what to do,” said Lise.

Mack, who lives in Red Deer, said that it is also important that people recognize human trafficking exists right here in Central Alberta. She added that Red Deer is actually a hub for the illegal sex trade in Canada, largely because of its location.

“It happens here, it’s not just in third world countries, it’s not just in Asia, it’s here,” said Mack.

She reiterated that this is why education is such an important part of the event. She added that making people aware of something gives them the power to do something about it.

“The less you know, the less you are going to do,” said Mack. “So as soon as you have some knowledge, it will empower you to just do something.”

Lacombe Fire plans to donate truck to Bolivia

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe Fire Department is looking to improve firefighting abroad.

On March 27th, Lacombe County council voted unanimously in favour of donating a recently replaced Clive Fire Department engine to Lacombe Fire Department for the purpose of donating it to a fire department in Bolivia.

Lacombe Fire Chief Ed van Delden said he was very happy that the engine had been made available for this purpose.

He added the idea for donating a fire truck originally came about when Lacombe Fire Department was looking into what to do with its own engine that is currently in the process of being replaced.

But, when members heard that Clive’s engine could become available they jumped at the opportunity.

“I think all of us looked at each other and thought,

‘Hey, we don’t have to wait’,” said van Delden.

Typically, used fire engines are put to auction but make only a few thousand dollars in a sale if they sell at all, said van Delden. But, because of the standards relating to firefighting in most Canadian municipalities, most fire trucks still have very low mileages when they are put out of service and because of the high standards of care for firefighting apparatuses are often still in prime condition.

As such, van Delden and the rest of the Lacombe Fire Department started looking for a better way to repurpose the engine rather than have it sell for a measly sum or collect dust in storage.

While with a different department in 2010, van Delden had been part of a similar project where his department had partnered with Canadian Fire Services Abroad (CAFSA), who have put out a number of projects where firefighting

it would be a good idea to try something of that nature in Lacombe as well and in doing so reached out to the broader community a bit more. van Delden added that some of the departments’ members had ties to charity organizations or similar programs already and one of their members, Ron Weich, is the operations manager for A Better World, who the Lacombe Fire Department has partnered with for this project.

Now, Lacombe Fire Department has an engine that is ready to donate, but they are still replacing their own engine as well. van Delden said this situation may make it possible for the donation of more than one truck to Bolivia, depending on how long it takes to get everything in order for the donation, or perhaps even two separate donation projects.

van Delden went on to say that the process of importing fire trucks for is a long, time-consuming process that requires a lot of work and so he did not want to specify how many, if any, trucks will be donated.

But, if things work out well, there is the possibility for such donations to become a more common way for local fire departments to re-purpose their trucks.

“It is a lot of work,” said van Delden. “I didn’t have an appreciation for how much bureaucracy was involved in importing used equipment.”

However, van Delden added there is good reason for the red tape.

Standards are set in place to ensure that countries are not importing junk for equipment and to prevent unwanted materials (such as noxious weeds transferred from soil on the truck’s tires) from being

imported as well. He also said were the shoe on the other foot, he would probably go about importing used equipment the same way. van Delden was clear that the project is not finalized, nor has it been 100% approved yet.

But, the project would likely see Lacombe Fire Department donate at least one engine to Bolivia and spend some time with the department abroad to train firefighters on the use and maintenance of the apparatus.

If the Lacombe Fire Department is not able to donate the engine or engines themselves, van Delden said that there is still the possibility for them to be donated to an organization like CAFS or Firefighters Without Borders and still have it used in a similar way. news@lacombeexpress.com

OPINION Haunting words Police officers need to start remembering that they are constantly in the public eye. Recently, RCMP officers in Nova Scotia found themselves in hot water after joking to each other about a woman who is the alleged victim in a domestic assault case.

While having injuries related to the incident photographed by police, one member of the RCMP called her home phone number and accidently left a three-minute voice message, the woman said. In it, RCMP can be heard discussing the case and eventually, one member asks the other, albeit jokingly, if the alleged victim perhaps got what was coming to her.

“So did she deserve to get hit?” he says in the recording.

No, of course she didn’t deserve to get hit. What a stupid thing to say. No one who is assaulted ever deserves to get hit.

Comments like these are not only inappropriate for members of the RCMP,

they are statements that no one should be making.

Even in jest.

We have all done it. We have all made an off-colour joke surrounded by close friends at home or even with colleagues in the workplace.

Sometimes we end up regretting it. Other times we dismiss it as banal banter that lacks any real meaning or substance behind it.

But that doesn’t mean its ok. Certainly, it is not ok for police officers to be making such comments.

Yes, it is true these members of the RCMP are not the first to make such crass wisecracks.

But in our society, we tend to hold individuals who enforce the law up to a higher standard, and we certainly regard them with higher scrutiny.

This is what police officers need to remember. Already, police are portrayed by the media in a negative light far too often. These officers are certainly not doing themselves any favours

with remarks like these.

If anything, they add to the stigma that cops are, to use the vernacular, ‘pigs.’

In doing so, they tarnish the name of officers everywhere. Not just in Nova Scotia, but in detachments and police services across

the country, including the names of the fine men and women who serve on the Lacombe Police Service and Blackfalds RCMP. Police everywhere need to start remembering that their words and actions reflect on the character of of-

ficers everywhere else.

Everyone everywhere is watching them and in today’s society, where everyone is connected to the world at the touch of a button, it doesn’t take long for the impact of one officer’s slip-up to spread.

Marking World Autism Awareness Day In case you aren’t already in the know, April 2nd marked the seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day. These days I can hardly go anywhere without meeting someone with a connection to the autism world.

This happens especially when my son Eric is wearing one of his funny autism awareness t-shirts.

One says, ‘FREEZE: I have autism and I’m not afraid to use it!’

So in the spirit of World Autism Awareness Day, allow me to introduce my son, Eric.

On the usual autism scale of mild-moderate-severe, he is about in the middle of the severe end.

Eric has classic autism, and all the symptoms that go with it. As the media often focuses on younger children with autism, I thought it might be interesting to give you a peek into the life of a teenager with autism, right here in Lacombe.

He speaks in short, hesitant sentences. If you ask him a question it takes him longer than usual to process an answer and get the words out, so we have learned to wait while he does that.

PARLBY part. We call them ‘air fives’ and ‘air shakes’, even ‘air hugs’, which are high-fives, handshakes and hugs that don’t make contact with the other person.

You can’t miss him as he walks down the street. He exhibits lots of motions with his hands and arms, and walks with funny gaits. This is all referred to as ‘stimming’, which helps him regulate the sensory input that is always barraging him from the everyday world. Often he will go back and walk around a person or object he walked around the ‘wrong’ side of, or touch things in patterns until his brain tells him he’s done it right and he can now move on.

He often sounds like he’s laughing and talking to himself. It’s called ‘scripting’. He’s re-enacting his favourite DVDs, movies, or video games.

Eric has been going to school at Lacombe Composite High School,

taking the LAWS program (Life, Academic and Work Skills). This program is one that I truly appreciate. Each student’s needs are assessed, and then they take part in the LAWS program to the degree dictated by their needs.

Otherwise, when it makes sense, many of these students take part in regular high school classes. Over his years at Lacombe Comp. Eric has (with some modifications by the teachers) taken ART 10, 11, and 12, Info Processing, parts of the design study program, worked in the greenhouse and school library, and more. The school’s Inclusion Coach, Jeannie Miller, has been a wonderful participant in Eric’s integration into school programs and tasks. Eric, who is now 17, is doing work experience four afternoons each week, accompanied by his educational assistant Tina Smith.

On Monday and Wednesday afternoons he works for the City, in the IT department. There he cuts drawings and maps from bound pads, loads them in the plotter, uses the touch pad to scan the document and then transfers and saves the file on a laptop.

When I ask her, IT manager Di-

ane Piche insists Eric’s work has ‘real world’ value, and they are very happy with the amount of work he gets done.

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons Eric works at Lacombe County. He performs a variety of duties there, such as filing, helping in the courtyard garden, organizing their office supplies, inventory, laminating, scanning, helping out in the mail room, and more.

Eric’s first work experience opportunity was in 2013 at Weidner Motors in Lacombe.

So look around the stores and streets of Lacombe and surrounding area, even Red Deer sometimes, for a 6’ tall buzz cut boy that may be laughing and flailing his arms and dancing down the street, or shuffling along and talking to himself in a store.

And just maybe on a good day, if you catch his attention by saying, “Hi Eric”, you might be rewarded with a few words, a smile, and a brief moment of eye contact, just for you.

Lacombe Police Service welcomes new officer

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express If you see a new face patrolling the streets of Lacombe, be sure to welcome Const. Travis Marcott, Lacombe Police Service’s newest officer, to the community.

Marcott has been with the Lacombe Police Service for just over two months now.

He said the small town feel of Lacombe was appealing to him as he is originally from the small town of Trenton, Nova Scotia himself. Prior to working in Lacombe, Marcott held a position in Edmonton.

“Coming from a small town in Nova Scotia, the big city wasn’t really my thing.” He added it hasn’t taken him long to develop a connection with Lacombe.

“I absolutely love it.”

He went on to say that while he stays busy working in Lacombe, he appreciates that he is not so busy that he never has time to connect with the community, which isn’t the case in some larger cities.

“It’s big enough that we

have days where we are busy, but we also have days that we have time to get out and talk to people, we have time to get out in the community.”

In some centres, Marcott said that police services have such a large call volume, officers are rushing from call to call from the time they sign on to the time they sign off and don’t have the time to connect with people.

He said he is happy that is not the case in Lacombe.

“Here we have the time.

We can sit down, we can talk to people, we can find out what happened. It has a huge advantage.”

Marcott added that building a connection and rapport with the community makes the job of policing a lot easier.

“We can’t do our job unless we can talk to the people in the community.

So being able to build a relationship with the community is an absolutely vital part to our job.”

As Marcott has just started with the Lacombe Police Service, he said he has not been able to meet a lot of

Marcott said becoming

a police officer has been a long time goal of his. Five years ago, prior to becoming a police officer, he got involved with a police youth program in Nova Scotia that further invigorated his desire to wear a badge.

“From the time I joined I absolutely loved it. Policing is something I always wanted to do.”

After going through the youth police program, Marcott went to police academy and became a full-fledged police officer.

He then got a position in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, before moving to Alberta and working for the Edmonton Police service and now, Lacombe Police Service. All together, Marcott

has been working as a police officer for a little over a year and a half, he said.

He added the variety of the job is what made a career in policing attractive to him.

“It’s just something different every day. You’re not stuck sitting behind a desk all the time.

“You get to go out, you get to get involved in the community. You get to meet new people, you get to problem solve.” news@lacombeexpress.com

MAN CHARGED IN CAR THEFTS Between March 23 and 25, Blackfalds RCMP received six complaints of vehicles stolen from Blackfalds and the surrounding rural area. The first of the stolen vehicles was taken from a residence within Blackfalds on March 23. Subsequently, trucks, cars and a quad were then stolen from rural residences in the early morning hours of March 25.

RCMP investigation has led them to believe that a Chevrolet Cavalier car was stolen from one rural residence and then left at another rural residence nearby where a Ford F150 truck was stolen. That truck was then left at a third resident where a Honda Trax quad was stolen. The Honda 4 Trax was then left at another rural residence where a Chevrolet half-ton truck was stolen.

That truck and a Ford 350 truck (the first vehicle stolen from within Blackfalds).

Were abandoned on RR 261 just north of Township Road 402. A short walking dis-

tance away form where the vehicles were found, two more abandoned vehicles (a Pontiac Grand Am and a Ford three-quarter ton) were discovered that has also been stolen from closed buildings.

As a result of the investigation, Jessie Bissonette, formerly of Blackfalds has been charged with eight counts of possession of stolen property, one count of dangerous driving and one count of flight from police.

The dangerous driving and flight from polices charges stem from an incident on March 25 where police allege Bissonette was operating the stolen Pontiac Grand Am on the QE II Hwy. south of Red Deer and passed an RCMP vehicle at a high speed. When the RCMP vehicle switched on its emergency lights, the Grand Am fled and eventually ended up on a dead end road south east of Red Deer.

A second RCMP vehicle assisting in stopping the Grand Am was struck intentionally by the Grand Am when it intentionally swerved in an attempt to avoid police apprehension, RCMP allege.

But there’s only one place where we can see blood vessels, in the retina, at the back of the eye, just a square centimeter in size.

Dr. David Ingvoldstad, a U.S. ophthalmologist and authority on retinal disease, says it’s not necessary to use invasive procedures to diagnose some generalized chronic health problems. The clue is what doctors see when examining the retina.

For instance, a retinal examination may detect small clots in tiny blood vessels.

This indicates a stroke may occur if a larger clot blocks blood supply to the brain.

Or, the detection of inflammation of the optic nerve along with decreased vision can point to multiple sclerosis. And, on rare occasions, increased pressure on the optic nerve can diagnose brain cancer.

But the major sign that eye doctors look for is atherosclerosis (hardening and narrowing of arteries) associated with aging and particularly with diabetes.

Half of diabetes patients die of heart attack.

Others suffer from strokes, kidney failure, blindness or lose legs due to poor blood circulation through narrowed arteries.

There is a way to prevent these complications. But it is like crying in the wilderness to get the medical profession to accept a vital fact. High doses of Vitamin C and lysine can both prevent and reverse atherosclerotic blocked arteries.

For years cardiologists have not listened to Dr. Linus Pauling who claimed that humans develop atherosclerosis and heart attack because, unlike animals, they are unable to produce Vitamin C. This vitamin is needed for the manufacture of collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together.

Just as mortar between bricks develops cracks if it’s defective, so does collagen. These microscopic cracks in coronary arteries set the stage for the formation of fat-laden cholesterol deposits that cause blockage and death. In effect, no crack, no blockage and no death.

It’s even more frustrating that cardiologists have ignored Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher. His historic photos of arteries on my web site are undeniable. They prove Vitamin C plus lysine acts as a medical Drano to unblock arteries. Photos don’t lie.

Sixteen years ago, following a heart attack, cardiologists said I would die when I refused to take cholesterol-lowering drugs (CLDs). Rather, I bet my life on natural science as I did not want to accept the risk of CLDs. This meant that for many years I’ve had to swallow a ton of Vitamin C and lysine pills, and I got tired of it.

Fortunately, Preferred Nutrition has produced a combination powder called Medi-C Plus. It is now available in Health Food Stores.

I admit that if I had not been a medical journalist and not met Pauling I would have taken my cardiologist’s advice and agreed to CLDs. Now 16 years later at 90 years of age I know this would not have been the

right decision.

Focus on Christ to help sort out the drama Have you ever flown during spring break?

It sounds like a great idea right?

The kids have a week off school, we can take a trip together! The whole family! It’s a great idea, to make the most of the time, not letting it slip by. For those who are fortunate enough to afford it, they can make something memorable happen with their family.

Spring break. Looked forward to by students all the way up to grad school.

As you have had the same idea, so has the rest of the spring breaking world. I discovered that as I arrived at the airport. School trips. Families vacationing. And for the rest of us it was a trip that made up an average month of work, it wasn’t our first flight, some of us had lost the wonder.

It’s easy in the unavoidable

I have to catch flight AC8298 at 7:50 with service from Edmonton to Saskatoon!

Only I do, the unspoken but implied tension.

But as I sit here, with 60 other passengers I see that it wasn’t only me. There were hundreds of us trying to get from Edmonton to somewhere, anywhere. The masses that we are can get frustrated at the delay, at the one person at

the bag drop off counter, at the four closed security lines.

But as the Bible verse I read on my phone while trying to remain composed amidst the throngs points out, “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2) Set your mind on the things above. Above the yelling airline employee. Above the long line at Starbucks that prevents you from getting your tall decaf coffee misto with caramel drizzle.

If you look high enough above the press and stress, you see the beautiful moments of humanity.

Where kindness has overcome our need for ourselves.

The delighted exclamation, “You want to come with me!?”

from a little sister to her favorite person on the planet, her big brother. The eager looking traveler, sitting clutching her boarding passes with pigeon toes, giving away her high level of adorability The tender request, “I’ll hold your stuff grandma, you go first.”

The appreciative response, “You don’t mind dear?”

“Not one bit.”

I may have missed it all if I was looking at the earthly things.

The things like minutes left, space for my suitcase, missing my flight. Important realities that cannot be ignored, but not so great that they would stop me from asking, how would Jesus see all of this? If looking for him helps me see past the drama, than look for Him I shall.

I will try to set my mind on the things above.

I’m glad I had the time to read that important nugget this morning in the airport, it made all the difference when I got into the plane to learn that I had a most unusual seat, at the very front, facing all the other passengers.

I’m glad that I was not focusing on the earthly things as I sat beside the open door to the plane, with an unobstructed view to the brisk Alberta sunrise. Given enough time I was able to see the faces of my fellow passengers, sleeping, reading and marvel that for some, their resting face is a smile.

I wondered what they had set their minds on as I traveled from home to home on this beautifully ordinary day.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Lacombe Daycare Society, Youth Unlimited and Volunteer Link will receive funding from this grant program.

This is a new external program for Lacombe & District FCSS, designed to support local social service programs that are preventive in nature and that promote and enhance the well-being of individuals and families.

The City of Lacombe has provided FCSS additional funds to facilitate the 2014 Community Grant Program.

The funding for 2014 is $18,500, and has been made available to community groups engaged in preventative social programs.

LACOMBE CENSUS AVAILABLE ONLINE The City of Lacombe is conducting a municipal census this year, and for the first time, residents will have the option of completing the census questionnaire online through to 8 p.m. on June 30.

“Lacombe is growing, and the City needs accurate, upto-date population information in order to ensure that we get a fair share of available grant funding from the provincial and federal governments,” said Mayor Steve Christie.

Before April 1, each household will have received a letter containing information and a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) on how to complete their census online at www.lacombe. ca/census.

Any household that does not fill out the census online

will have an opportunity to complete it with an enumerator.

Enumerators will begin collecting census data on April 7 by visiting households that have not responded online.

All census workers will present City-issued identification and residents are encouraged to confirm their identities before answering questions.

In addition to the methods above, residents can also go to the Census kiosk at City Hall and complete the census questionnaire.

Residents can also use the computers at the Mary C. Moore Public Library.

Residents who wish to take the census over the telephone are asked to call 403-782-1287 or 403-7821274 and a staff member will assist them. Have your unique PIN on hand when you call.

Cow Patti Theatre has done it again.

Just prior to the Lacombe Golf and Country Club opening up for the season, Cow Patti Theatre presents The Foursome, a play whose plot revolves around a golf game between four friends.

While the action in The Foursome takes place on the tee boxes of a course as the pals hack their way through 18 holes, you don’t need to play, enjoy, or even know anything about golf to find the play funny.

The Foursome tells the story of four men who get together for a round of golf the morning after their 25year college reunion.

Once tight friends, their

bond has weakened in the years since they left college.

But, the friends attempt to pick up where they left off and rekindle their relationships with each other over the course of the game.

Bruce Tubb is Rick, a sly, scheming fellow who is eager to show off his skill on the links, gained from playing golf year-round at his home in Florida and he often hints at how successful his career as a boat salesman has made him.

The only single fellow of the bunch, Rick enjoys bragging about his sexual exploits and the women he has dated. He is also the first to suggest making a ‘friendly bet’ on the outcome of the game and spends much of the game boasting about his skill.

Wally McKinnon is Ted,

who is not a morning person. Ted struggles, particularly in the first part of the game to stay awake, not to mention play a decent game of golf.

As such, he is a bit of a downer and spends much of the game being teased by his friends but is able to give just as well as he gets to defend himself from his friends’ quips.

Brian Young is Cameron, who, to put it simply, is a worrywart. He worries it will rain, he worries he will get sunburn, he worries drinking on the course will lose him his membership and when his friends point it out to him, he begins to worry that he worries too much.

“Worry can lead to stress, which can lead to high blood pressure and

then a heart attack.”

Most of all though, Cameron worries he and his friends are drifting apart.

He spends a good deal of the performance trying to find ways to tighten the loosening ties between the four.

Edward Chaplin is Donnie, a family man if there ever was one. Very proud of his family and their accomplishments Donnie talks non-stop about them.

In fact, as the party approaches each tee throughout the play, Donnie enters the scene mid-way through a story about his wife or one of his five children.

He has also never played golf before and isn’t very good at it. So much so that he has to curse after each drive he makes.

The most good-natured

of the four, Donnie takes on the responsibility of keeping the group positive.

He does his best to turn things around when things get tense and the friendly bet on the game isn’t quite so friendly anymore.

Possibly the most humorous of Cow Patti’s productions this season, The Foursome is an intelligently written comedy that isn’t quite as silly as Cow Patti’s previous productions this season. Instead of wordplays or kooky chases on stage, the comedy is situational and actually stems from some meaningful discussions the four friends have while on the course.

There is also some substance underneath the comedy of the show as well. Many deep matters are discussed by the four as

the wait for the slow party ahead of them and uncover a number of secrets from each of their friends. In fact the issues faced by the group are ones most members of the audience will relate to.

Some of the conversations had by the party are quite serious and serve to draw the audience in to learning more about the characters.

However, the whole show, even the serious bits, is peppered with enough jokes and gags to keep the audience laughing all the time.

Flat Iron Jazz gets set to swing

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express With this year’s long and cold winter finally starting to loosen its grip, Flat Iron Jazz is making ready to celebrate the change of the season.

On April 12, Flat Iron Jazz will hold its annual Big Band Spring Swing Fling dinner and dance gala at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. The event is a fundraiser to raise money for the proposed C4 initiative.

Musical Director Gerald Ganson said the ball is a good way for people to get

rid of cabin fever after being cooped up during the long winter.

“It just feels like a really long winter so it’s a chance to just get out and shake off some of those winter feelings.”

Ganson said he can’t recall the exact start of the annual tradition, but said it has been running for six or seven years.

He added that originally, it was held in February as a Valentine’s Day event and was known as the Sweetheart Gala.

It was moved to the spring because there were already quite a few events

happening in February, said Ganson.

The Big Band Spring Swing Fling is a ball with a full course dinner and a “Nice long dance to follow.”

There are two main reasons Flat Iron Jazz organized the event. One, the band wanted to create an event that would allow them to perform together as such, said Ganson.

Two, it served as an opportunity to help support different groups and initiatives within Lacombe.

Beneficiaries of the Spring Swing Fling have changed a few times, but Ganson said that for the

last few years the focus has been on raising funds for a performing arts centre in Lacombe. A desire to have such a facility within the City has more recently given birth to the C4 initiative.

“The current goal of building a performing arts centre definitely fits in with the goals of any musical group, they just kind of go hand in hand,” said Ganson. He went on to say that he had been living in another community when a performing arts centre had been built there and he saw a large positive outcome from that project in the community. Ganson add-

ed he imagines Lacombe would see similar gains should a similar facility be built here.

Flat Iron Jazz is a part of the Lacombe Lions Community Band Society.

Ganson said it was formed when a number of the community band’s members wanted to get together to play jazz music.

The band has between 15 and 19 members at any given time. Ganson said Flat Iron Jazz tries to aim for 17, the number traditionally associated with a big band.

It is also styled after the bands of Glenn Miller and Woody Herman.

Ganson said that the band plays music all the way from the eras where those bands were popular right up until modern day music.

“Our goal for the Swing Spring Fling and other dances that we play is to provide a real mix of danceable music.”

Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS) lands in Red Deer

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Toronto band Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (USS) is hyped and ready to rock the Enmax Centrium alongside Hedley and Classified on April 6.

“It’s always a fabulous time (touring) mainly because you get to explore new things about Canadians and the provinces and cities across the way,” said Jason ‘Human Kebab’ Parsons, the turntablist in the duo.

“I think Ontarians have a tendency to be really consumed by the greater Toronto area but if you actually get outside of it and you go coast to coast, you get to know fellow Canadi-

ans and see the landscapes that they get used to everyday.”

Parsons met Ashley (Ash) Buchholz nine years ago while they were each performing in separate bands as opening acts.

The two hit it off immediately and began recording in Parsons’ parent’s basement in a small town outside of Toronto.

“We started performing and never dreamt in our wildest dreams that we would have been to nine countries many years later and that we would have had criss-crossed Canada probably a dozen times or more,” said Parsons.

Parsons says that coming back to Alberta is very inspiring for them because

of the vast and beautiful landscape. He explains that the first time he ever heard a song of his and Ash’s creation outside of Toronto was when he was leaving a 21-day shift from Cold Lake, and was driving to the Edmonton airport.

“That was kind of like our first reach outside of Toronto and I just happened to be there,” he said.

“It was like two worlds converging,” When the duo hits the Centrium, Parsons says that they are ready to let Red Deer “Witness the fitness of a USS show.”

The Toronto musicians have been to Red Deer once so far and Parsons says they are very excited to come back and show Alber-

Parsons also said that Red Deer concert goers can expect USS to “hammer through” the very singles that brought them so much success on Calgary and Edmonton radio stations which include Hollow Point Sniper Hyperbole, Laces Out, Damini, This Is The Best and Yin Yang.

What sets USS apart from other artists is their use of turntables mixed with Buschholtz’s singing.

When the two met, Bushholtz approached Parsons to mix their influences of grunge, hip-hop, alternative rock and 50’s-60’s pop music.

“Ash sat behind the drums and played me the

two-step beat that he wanted, pressed play on a cassette of Buddy Holly and then he referenced this Bittersweet Symphony drum and bass remix from the 90’s.”

“As soon as he started hitting me with all of this stuff all I could say was wow. He sang an acoustic song over these beats and I was like, I totally get it,” said Parsons.

Ash and Parsons have worked hard to develop an identity for their band.

They have grown from their attraction to minimal beats and acoustic recordings to a more developed and ‘full’ sound production.

Parsons maintains that the duo work hard to remember the “Original in-

carnation of USS. When we first started getting bigger, we were a little bit intimidated,” he recalls.

“We were always drawn to the allure of how minimal and basic we could keep it. However, in the world of music, everybody’s doing their thing and you really need to stand out and accentuate your features.”

Parsons says he and Ash are excited to come back to perform in the west because of the support and popularity gained on Alberta stations.

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Blackfalds Wranglers will have to settle for second place this season.

Blackfalds lost the championship series in the Heritage Junior Hockey League to the Okotoks Bisons in game five when the Bisons outscored them 7-5 on March 30. Okotoks had forced game five in the best of five series by defeating Blackfalds 5-4 the night before.

Coach Brian Lenz said that a game five loss in the final series was disappointing for both him

and the players, but he was satisfied with how the team finished especially considering how many inexperienced players were on the roster. “As young as we were and as many new guys as we had I think we played extremely well,” said Lenz. “It’s hard to complain when you make it to the end of the league like that.”

Lenz was also pleased that the Wranglers had played much better during the final game in Okotoks than they had the night before at home in Blackfalds.

He said that the final game was a close one,

with the Bisons only pulling ahead a few points at the end of the game when the Wranglers pulled their goalie.

After Saturday’s game, Lenz was disappointed that the Wranglers were not able to finish off the series in three games, having been up 2-1.

“That was probably the worst game we played all playoffs,” said Lenz. “We didn’t do a lot right.”

While the Wranglers forced the Bisons to battle for the championship in the final game, the Bisons rose to the challenge and upped their game as well,

said Lenz. “We played better, they played better too,” said Lenz. “It was a much faster game (in Okotoks) than it had been in Blackfalds.

“We just made some mistakes on the back end that cost us dearly, took some penalties and couldn’t get back into it.

“Hit a couple goal posts and a cross-bar but those don’t count.”

Lenz also tipped his hat to the Bisons, saying they have a strong roster and played well to win the title.

“Okotoks is a good team, they have a lot of guys that can score goals and we just

couldn’t contain them,” said Lenz.

Prior to the start of playoffs, Lenz had said that no series in the league would be easy.

He said that the league was very tight this year, and each series would be a battle. It would seem he was right.

With the young team performing so well this year, next season promises to be a good one as well.

Lenz said that he can never be sure how many players will return each year, but he assumed that the Wranglers would be able to build off this sea-

son’s success and experience. “We will have more guys returning next year than we had this year, I’m sure,” said Lenz. “I think we should be as strong or maybe even stronger next year. Our young guys should improve some I would imagine.”

However, the Wranglers aren’t quite done yet. Lenz said the team still has provincials to look forward to, which begin today in Grande Prairie. Blackfalds will have their first matchup, against the host team of Grande Prairie at 8 p.m. tonight.

Gymnastics an all encompassing sport

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Gymnastics is a sport that is exciting, engaging and can further athletes in more than just the sport itself.

Here in Lacombe, a local gymnastics club of 180 members is making those benefits available to the community.

Coach Darlene Boyko, who heads the Lacombe Gymnastics club, said that gymnastics is a great sport as it works all of the body and touches on so many different aspects of athleticism.

Strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and spatial awareness, just to name a few, are all aspects of gymnastics that are transferable to a number of different sports, she said.

“It’s the basis for all sports,” said Boyko.

She added that the benefits of gymnastics are obvious when gymnasts participate in a number of other sports as well.

For example, ball players hit harder and have better coordination than those without that experience.

Other skills, like concentration, can be honed

through gymnastics as well, said Boyko. Of course, it is also a great way to stay fit.

Boyko has been coaching Lacombe Gymnastics for nine years.

Before that, she had a year and a half of previous experience coaching a club in Red Deer.

She had an interest in gymnastics from when she was quite young and started practicing the sport early in her college career, she said.

A bit of a thrill seeker, the excitement and adrenaline rush of gymnastics is what led Boyko to her involvement in gymnastics.

But, Boyko took a break from the sport and hadn’t had any involvement with gymnastics for about 25 years prior to coaching.

She said it was coaching young students and seeing them develop as gymnasts that re-invigorated her love of the sport and is the reason she continues her involvement today.

“The girls who are coaching now, I was coaching eight years ago when they were eight and nine years old and now they are 16, 17 and coaching themselves,” said Boyko.

“So it’s kind of nice to see it come full-circle.”

Lacombe Gymnastics Club starts teaching skills to gymnasts almost as soon as they can walk.

At as young as 18 months, children can enter the Lacombe Gymnastics Ladybugs parent tot program.

At this young age, parents help guide their children and help teach them the very basics of gymnastics including body awareness, spatial awareness and how to line up.

From there, Boyko coaches right up to the provincial level of gymnastics.

Everything from floor

routines, to uneven bars, to tumbling, to trampoline is included at Lacombe Gymnastics.

While Boyko is not certified to coach men’s gymnastics, she does run a parkhour (free-running) program for older boys and has a drop-in teen program as well.

Lacombe Gymnastics boasts an impressive roster of coaches.

In addition to Boyko, there is a former member of the Acronaires and a Perfect Storm Athletics cheerleader that coach as well, said Boyko.

While Lacombe’s club is classified as a recreational one, students do get the opportunity to compete, but it’s not necessary to do so in order to excel in the sport.

Boyko said that students and their families decide how many competitions, if any, to participate in on their own.

For students who are a little more competitive, but at the same time don’t want the full stress of traveling and competing in front of judges, there is also a performance program.

“We try to keep it as engaging as possible,” said Boyko.

She added that the club also hosts workshops and seminars to this effect as well.

Students who wish to expand their gymnastics experience are welcome to coach too.

Boyko said a Coach In Training (CIT) program from Alberta Gymnastics is also run through the club and many of her students are now coaching classes of their own.

As a bonus, these students even get work experience credit in high school for their coaching.

Home design relates to personal journey Clients are always asking about ‘trends’ in design, what is hot, what is trendy and current in home design. We scour sites like Houzz and Pinterest hoping for a piece of inspiration that will work perfectly in our homes.

Design is like no other industry as it creates a deep need in people which drives their curiosity and ultimately their decision to renovate or purchase a home.

There are very few professions that I can think of where people drop by their local expert’s office just to talk, dream and plan – with the exception of a financial guru or retirement planner.

I can’t imagine ever sitting down with my dentist to plan out my dreams for my teeth cleaning and oral hygiene for the next few years.

MECKLER I doubt we will discuss the trends in teeth whitening and I will not look for his opinion on what shade of lipstick works best with my skin tone and colour of enamel.

There will be no lattes shared with the produce manager at my local supermarket as I seek his advice on meal planning for my family in 2014 and I don’t see an in-home consult with my doctor as I gather her opinion on colours to de-stress my life.

The fun part is, I often get to play designer, doctor, therapist,

family counsellor, contractor and concierge for a single client!

Sometimes my role in my clients’ life is not just picking a pretty paint colour, we are often searching for life/storage/clutter solutions which greatly affect peace of mind and often sanity.

When my clients 20-something son has moved back home and is driving his parents crazy with his random hours, loud video games and messy friends I can create a ‘kid’ proof space with sound proofing and scrub able surfaces.

If a wife can’t handle the toilet seat up and the constant overspray in the bathroom I can give her a private girl only oasis where she can have all the fragrant and beautiful things she desires without ever having to clean another

man mess.

I have just created marital bliss for slightly less money than a few years in marriage counselling.

I consider that a bargain!

Being a designer has far more personal aspect than I would have ever dreamed (and a lot more math), I feel that there should have been more math and human psychology courses taught when I obtained my degree as I have experienced many personal tragedies and triumphs with my clients.

From creating that perfectly dreamy nursery to re designing a space after a loved one has passed on, I am blessed to be able to walk through different situations with my clients as we design and dream. I could never have imagined that this career would be so

full of success and frustration, victory and loss all rolled into one job.

My clients have fulfilled and exhausted me and I am thankful for every challenge that has come my way.

My answer to ‘what is trendy’ is that trends are reactionary to the situation that life throws at us on a daily basis. What may be suitable for your design dreams today may evaporate like smoke tomorrow as you face an unexpected situation.

Design and dream for what is true for you, trust your heart an instinct to create a life that is truly your own.
