Income tax scammers defraud locals

New phone scams are hitting Fraser Valley residents hard and police want to warn people not to fall for it and call to report it.

Recently, several residents have received suspicious phone calls from an unknown caller who alleges to be an officer from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The male caller says that a review of the person’s previous year’s taxes shows their account to be in $3,000 in arrears. The caller threatens that the debt must be paid within a half hour and if not, it will result in his or her arrest.

In some cases, the fraudster is choosing to call people with an ethnic last name and threatening deportation if they don’t pay up.

The resident is then instructed to go to a local store and purchase a prepaid credit card and call back with the card number and the PIN (Personal Identification Number). The call is coming from a prepaid cellphone making it impossible to track and the prepaid credit card is also untraceable, said police.

“We’ve had six reports of this scam just this week,” said Langley RCMP Cpl. Holly Marks.

Similar occurrences have taken place in other jurisdictions in the Lower Mainland with a variety of telephone numbers and circumstances. In North Vancouver, fraudsters represented themselves as police officers and may suggest the unsuspecting citizen can avoid arrest by paying up. Recently, in Surrey, residents have been getting calls from a fraudster claiming to be a CRA officer saying the taxpayer may receive a refund or benefit and then steals the victim’s identity.

However, an Abbotsford woman was taken for $25,000 last month. Const. Paul Walker said the scammers used the same tactic that has snared other victims. The woman was instructed to go to a store, load $25,000 onto pre-paid Visa credit cards and then call back a number that was provided to her.

She was instructed to provide the Visa number on the front of the cards, as well as the PIN number on the back. This enabled the scammers to use those credit card numbers online, likely to obtain cash advances, with no ability to identify the recipient.

Walker said the woman realized she had been scammed after she shared the story with family members, who had read about the fraud through news articles earlier in the week.

They then reported the matter to police.

Walker said that since police issued public notice of the scam on Tuesday they have received 20 complaints a day from people receiving the fraudulent calls. Walker said in another instance a woman was defrauded of $4,000 after the caller threatened to have her son deported if she didn’t pay her back taxes.

Police and the CRA continue to remind people to be cautious of anyone calling and claiming to be with the CRA, particularly if they are being aggressive or threatening. New recycling regulations to impact agri-businesses

The diversity of plants at the Van Belle Nursery in Abbotsford – the evergreens, roses, shrubs and vines – all have one thing in common.

They are grown in pots.

A new provincial recycling program set to take effect on May 19 will mean every pot will carry an added cost for Dave Van Belle, president of the nursery his parents founded in the ’70s.

The government is gearing up to implement the new and controversial regulations from Multi-Material B.C. (MMBC), an industry stewardship group which will charge businesses for recycling the packing and paper they generate.

In 2011, B.C.’s recycling regulation was updated, with the goal of shifting the cost and responsibility for managing residential recycling from local government and taxpayers to the businesses that produce the materials.

MMBC’s plan was approved by the Ministry of the Environment in 2013.

MMBC is a non-profit that plans to operate the residential packaging and printed paper collection and recycling system on behalf of the companies that pay into the program.

Van Belle said he agrees with the environmental principles of the program – the nursery already recycles everything it can – but absorbing the additional cost of the program will be difficult, and he’s not certain it will achieve its goals.

MMBC is poised to take over curbside recycling collection in the province, although Abbotsford has opted out of the program for now, as city council has concerns the program is not business-friendly and would actually decrease the amount of waste diverted from the local garbage stream.

For Van Belle it’s a concern because the nursery can’t simply reduce its use of pots.

“We have to have a pot to produce a plant. It’s not just extra packaging.”

The potential impact on

business was recognized by the BC Chamber of Commerce which, as the program took shape, pushed the government for changes.

In early February, the government announced it would exempt any business with an annual revenue of less than $1 million, which produces less than one tonne of packaging and printed paper produced annually, or has a single point of retail sale.

The government said that means fewer than 3,000 business in the province will be hit by the regulations and the move was lauded by chambers through the province.

But business associations have come out against MMBC even after the changes, including the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, the BC Agriculture Council, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, the BC Yukon Community Newspapers Association, The Canadian Newspapers Association and more.

Those groups have launched a campaign and a website – rethinkitbc.ca – to pressure Victoria on the issue.

The website outlines the concern that many small- and medium-sized businesses will still be captured by the regulations, including anyone who owns a franchise, no matter how small.

The organizations also express the concern that businesses generating just below $1 million in revenue, producing less than one tonne in packaging per year or looking to expand to a second location will be put off by having to join MMBC – therefore stifling business growth.

BC Agriculture council vice-chair Stan Vander Waal has said the program will impact berry farmers whose operations aren’t exempt, as they package strawberries and blueberries in plastic clamshells because retailers insist that’s what consumers want.

The Van Belle Nursery generates more than $1 million per year in revenue and will have to participate. But Van Belle considers the nursery, a family-run organization with about 100 staff members at its peak, to be a small business. “(With MMBC) I’m treated like a big business. I’m treated like a Walmart. We’re just farmers here at the end of the day, trying to grow plants and make a living.”

He predicts that at a minimum, the new program will cost $20,000 to $30,000 annually for the nursery – not an easy cost to absorb.

But in addition to the cost, Van Belle is concerned by the increase in red tape.

Because the nursery sells products wholesale to other businesses or landscapers, it falls on the nursery to determine which clients are exempt from the program and who to charge for putting packaging into the commercial waste stream. With hundreds of clients, Van Belle said the additional work will be staggering.

Van Belle said he feels the charges should be made at the point of production of the pots, or at the point of sale in order to make the price more clear to consumers.

“Why am I the guy in the middle doing this?”

He also said he feels it makes an uneven playing field for businesses, as it increases the competition between him and smaller operations which are exempt from the program and businesses from out of province who don’t have to comply with the rules.

He added that he is clearly not the only one with concerns about MMBC, citing the City of Abbotsford’s decision to not participate.

For Van Belle, this just confirms the flaws in the program because Abbotsford residents will effectively pay twice for recycling. By opting out of the program, residents will continue to pay for the city’s recycling program, and pay the cost that producers will build into their products to cover the MMBC fees.

The other option would be to allow MMBC to take over recycling, which could lower the level of service and mean the city would not longer have control of recycling – or the ability to address community complaints.

Van Belle’s concerns go beyond his own business. He has concerns that MMBC will operate as a monopoly without government oversight, affecting people across the province.

The MMBC program will be administered in Ontario, and two of its three directors are Toronto-based senior

executives with Loblaws and Unilever.

The NDP has criticized the program, accusing the government of handing over control of the recycling system to Toronto-based multinational executives, and small business critic Lana Popham has called on the government to change its course, and postpone the launch of the program until more discussion can be held with businesses and communities.

Naomi Yamamoto, Liberal MLA and minister of state for small business, said that the program provides an incentive for producers to reduce their packaging, adding that the businesses’ exemptions mean only one per cent of businesses must comply with regulations.

But Van Belle said regardless of incentive, he can’t reduce his packaging.

is planted the pot could end up in a landfill. He said that MMBC increases the incentive to recycle the material and the program as a whole forces businesses “to make decisions and look at opportunities to reduce packaging.

“You only pay for your share of the waste … with the idea that we can develop a system that will recycle that material.”

Van Belle said he has been in contact with local MLAs, including Liberals Simon Gibson and Mike de Jong, who have been receptive to his concerns.

Langdon said that despite criticism leading up to the May deadline, much of the work involved has already been executed and the program is gearing up to start.

With the implementation deadline looming, Van Belle is hoping the government will realize the implications of imposing MMBC. “I hope the government is able to take a step back, take a deep breath and reconsider this flawed program.”

Man, 23, killed in Gloucester crash Aldergrove Star

A 23-year-old Surrey man died on impact after his bright yellow Nissan Xterra crossed the centre line and crashed into a parked flatbed semi trailer on Sunday morning.

The crash took place at 1:30 a.m. in the 26900-block of Gloucester Way. The 23-year-old was the sole occupant. Langley RCMP believe speed played a role in the crash.

Police are still hoping to speak to an Indo-Canadian man who

was driving a white semi truck. He left before officers had a chance to speak with him. The road was closed for most of Sunday while police worked at the scene.

This is the third fatal crash in Langley this year.

Auto thefts plunge in era of bait cars

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Aldergrove Lodge #66 was instituted 91 years ago on June 30, 1923. The Jackman family has been involved in this Lodge since its inception, and John’s great-uncle Richard Jackman cut the lumber to build the first Elks Hall in 1925. The initial Elks Lodge meetings were held in the Aldergrove Opera House until the completion of the new hall.

In recent years the Aldergrove Elks sold their hall and property because of the changing times. Up until the 1990s

the Elks Hall was the unofficial “city hall” of the Aldergrove community. As a focal point in the community the hall served as a venue for weddings, election polls, special events and meetings, church catering, and other civic affairs and gatherings in downtown Aldergrove.

“I have organized and chaired many volunteer committees that have raised funds to help children and families with special needs in Aldergrove and surrounding area,” said John.

“Most recently our committee has arranged a joint venture with the Township of Langley to assist in a proposed senior and youth centre in the proposed site at the former elementary school on Fraser Highway, with the hope of creating a lasting legacy in this community.”

The Aldergrove Elks remain active and continue to serve their community through volunteer work.

Car thefts in the Lower Mainland have fallen 78 per cent in the past decade and police are crediting the bait car program for much of that drop.

The latest statistics show an eight per cent drop from 5,200 vehicles stolen in the region in 2012 to 4,700 last year.

In contrast, more than 21,000 cars were stolen in 2003, a year before the first use in B.C. of vehicles implanted with cameras and technology to safely disable them as officers converge to catch thieves red-handed.

ICBC road safety director John Dickinson said the payoff in reduced auto insurance claims has been dramatic.

ICBC handled $98 million in stolen auto claims in 2003, when an average of 70 cars were stolen every day in B.C. By 2013 that had dropped to $27 million claims, or 17 stolen vehicles per day.

– was equivalent to filling B.C.’s largest ferry with vehicles 40 times over.

The single biggest 10-year decreases in car theft have been recorded in Coquitlam (down 88 per cent from 2003), White Rock (down 87 per cent) and Burnaby and New Westminster (both down 86 per cent.)

The bait car program, run by the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) has since expanded to include boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers and other “bait property.”

Thefts from auto have also declined about 68 per cent in B.C. over the last decade.

Insp. Peter Jadis, the head of IMPACT, said the team’s officers are now targeting larger scale auto rings that are running chop shops and in some cases simply stealing cars for the value of the metal.

That’s a shift from past years where thieves were often out to joy ride or commit break-and-enters using stolen vehicles.

Police say the items most often stolen from vehicles are: smartphones; other personal electronics like tablets, laptops and GPS units; work tools; credit cards and identification; stereo equipment; cash and change; car parts and accessories; garage door openers; sunglasses; and keys.

Thieves who snatch garage door openers from a vehicle and get the home address from the vehicle registration continues to be a concern.

Keys stolen from clothing in gyms and rec centres are also a way thieves can get into cars and bypass immobilizers.

The most frequently stolen vehicles in Metro Vancouver last year were older model Honda Civics or Accords and Dodge/Plymouth/ Chrysler Caravan/Voyageurs. Ford F-series pickup trucks (2005-2006) were among the most targeted vehicles in the Fraser Valley, behind 1998-2000 Honda Civics.

Police also issued a new annual list of top 10 most wanted car thieves in B.C. Friday.

Mail theft is on the rise again Aldergrove Star

Grateful for health care Editor: The Abbotsford Regional Hospital Cancer Clinic, open since 2008, can be proud of their overall patient care and treatment programming. Since undergoing cancer treatments 15 years ago, and now once more, I found it remarkable that the present staff members treat patients like a person, not like just a number.

Learning the steps one must go through in cancer treatments can be a trying experience for new patients. The added cancer treatment counselling services also is an incredibly helpful initiative in this time of need.

My heartfelt thanks go out to surgeon Dr. Colleen Dyck, Dr. Uhlman and the cancer treatment teams, for the immediate competent care, delivered with compassion, that I received as they helped to stem the tide of a potentially fast spreading cancer.

Kindly keep saving lives. It is appreciated more then you can ever imagine. Sometimes it takes a hard knocking to learn how to be more thankful to the hospital staff and the modern day technological services stationed right at our doorsteps, free of charge. Oh, how spoiled we really are.

VICTORIA – Kootenay Bill Bennett has done what I reported last November he was doing: seizing the horns of the sacred cow that is the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Henceforth there shall be two land reserves. The Island, South Coast and Okanagan, which produce 85% of B.C.’s total farm revenue on 10% of protected land, retains its strict anti-development rules.

In the much larger area Bennett likes to call “beyond Hope,” non-farm uses will be considered to help maintain the many economically marginal farmers. This is the Interior, Kootenay and North, where development pressure is mostly an urban myth. In remote areas, ALR diktats with no relation to reality are routinely ignored.

Political critics were quick to call this a B.C. Liberal hidden agenda to pave the ALR for their developer pals.

Certainly neither party’s 2013 platform talked about the ALR, although B.C. Liberal leadership candidates Kevin Falcon and Mike de Jong promised relief from its more senseless bureaucracy to Peace country farmers in 2011.

When the zone plan was revealed last week, media went to ALR pioneer Harold Steves, the hero of all Lower Mainlanders who try to tell northern farmers what to do.

“My real fear is that they want to open the door for fracking and natural gas and oil,” Steves said.

I’ve got bad news for the socialist sage of south Richmond. Oil and gas companies have operated on farmland since before the ALR was created in 1974.

Conspiracy buffs should read the delegation agreement that took effect just weeks after last May’s election, giving the Oil and Gas Commission authority to administer wells, pipelines and waste pits on farmland.

If the ALR interferes with the prescribed handling of drilling waste, it interferes with safety measures.

University of the Fraser Valley “food security” professor Lenore Newman went on CKNW to refute what she called “uninformed arguments,” and then offered one of her own. This two-zone change is connected to the exclusion of large tracts of Peace land for the Site C dam, she said.

Actually, the government exempted that project last December using the longstanding “provincial interest” provision, so this phase of the alleged capitalist plot against farmland has no effect on Site C. Steves is also concerned about second homes being built beyond Hope, and later sold rather than being destroyed as is the current disastrous rule. He warns that farmers might end up with “non-farm neighbours,” or as we like to call them up north, “neighbours.”

Again, this is an urban problem projected onto rural B.C., where costly restrictions mainly serve to accelerate the depopulation of rural and remote areas.

Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington is livid about the legislation, which has no effect on loss of farmland in her constituency.

The growing federally regulated port supersedes provincial laws, and the Tsawwassen First Nation is growing a big shopping centre on its treaty land.

Aboriginal entrepreneurs are also starting to force bigbox development on southern Vancouver Island, home of the purest of the pure left. This is where farmers can’t even protect themselves against deer.

The most damning charge is that the six regional ALR panels now in place are open to corruption under new rules.

Panel members have always been cabinet appointments, but currently they have to be from outside the region so they are less likely to hand out exemptions to their friends.

That is certainly something to keep an eye on. So is the status of B.C. farms, where the average farmer age is 56 and rising, and half of farms have income less than $10,000 a year.

Editor: It is refreshing to see children in groups putting on fundraising events to raise money for their cause. Whether it’s Girl Guides selling cookies; a sports team selling hot dogs; Brownies selling apples or others holding car washes — they are not only offering a product or service in exchange for a donation to their particular need, they are learning to work together with others to meet a goal. All part of learning life skills.

What distresses me is when I see able bodied youths in cadet uniforms standing outside retail outlets with a tin can soliciting donations. Even squeegee kids give something in return. This does nothing except instill a sense of entitlement that the world owes them a living as they stand there like homeless people begging for money. Please – those in charge need to come up with something else that gives these kids a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day that they can take with them through adulthood. Thank you.

Support ‘War Amps’ Editor: I am a member of the War Amps Operation Legacy, which consists of members of the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program who are dedicated to preserving and commemorating Canada’s military heritage by teaching younger generations about the importance of remembrance.

I would like to highlight a special effort that The War Amps is undertaking; the Newsreel of the Week Project. These newsreels were filmed by the Canadian Army Film Unit during the Second World War to document the troops in training and on the front lines.

The front-line cameramen were soldiers first. In addition to camera instruction, they received infantry training and took guns into battle along with their heavy 35 mm movie cameras.

Putting their lives at risk, they captured footage of the battles and scooped the world on major events, including the invasion of Sicily and D-Day. Many civilians on the home front would have watched the newsreels in movie theatres during the war. The public can view this extraordinary footage as The War Amps releases all 106 newsreels to the public, one week at a time. Beating a deadly disease Editor: One of Canada’s finest foreign assistance achievements is TB Reach, a grassroots health org dedicated to help those TB sufferers that other programs miss: those who are physically isolated and difficult to treat. There are an estimated 3 million of these, with each untreated sufferer eventually infecting about ten other people.

Canada is the only major funder of TB Reach. Our federal government already does great work fighting this ancient scourge through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, but TB Reach is Canada’s own gift to the world. Currently, TB reach is short about 200 million, spread over 5 years. I sincerely hope that Canada pledges to complete funding of TB Reach and saves the lives of those last 3 million.

Pipeline opponents create unlikely partnership

It’s been a long battle with no immediate end in sight for First Nations groups, environmentalists and concerned British Columbians fighting proposals to develop oil and gas infrastructure across the province.

But one journalist says the political turmoil has resulted in some surprisingly optimistic partnerships between First Nations groups and their non-Aboriginal counterparts in B.C.. “I think that’s actually one of the positive things that has come out of this whole brouhaha,� said the Squamish-based Arno Kopecky, “that all of these pipeline wars we’re in today – whether it’s Kinder Morgan, whether it’s Keystone XL, whether it’s Northern Gateway – have brought a number of overdue alliances together.�

The optimistic message was met with applause on Saturday, March 8 from the more than 50 attendees from the Langley commu-

nity – of various ethnic backgrounds – who gathered at Walnut Grove Secondary for the PipeUp Community forum on the Kinder Morgan pipeline project. “These corporations, they don’t care what colour of skin you are, they don’t care what your ethnicity is,� Kopecky told the audience. “We’re all in this together.�

Kopecky recently released his second book, The Oil Man and the Sea, which chronicles his three-month sailing journey into the Great Bear Forest region and the proposed oil tanker routes for the recently approved Enbridge Northern Gateway project.

He said he was struck by the First People he met who fought for a say in the decision, even though they (correctly) expected their words to fall on deaf ears. Farmland review creates two ALR zones in B.C.

VICTORIA – The Agricultural Land Reserve is being divided into two zones, with regulations to come to allow non-farm home-based businesses outside the southwest regions of high productivity.

The changes affect three of the six regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission, for the Interior, Kootenay and North regions. Details will be worked out in consultation with industry and placed in regulations, said Bill Bennett, the cabinet minister in charge of the government’s core review of programs.

Non-farm uses will not be considered in the Island, South Coast and Okanagan regions, but “value added� activities such

as food processing on farmland are being considered across the province, Bennett said.

Bennett and Steve Thomson, acting agriculture minister, reiterated their assurances that the ALC will continue to operate independently. Commissioners are appointed by cabinet, two or three per region, and decisions can be appealed to the regional chairs who act as an executive.

Delta South independent MLA Vicki Huntington called the Interior zone change “deceitful and a betrayal of the public trust,� and accused the government of removing its obligation to consult with the ALC chair on new panel appointments.

NDP agriculture critic Nicolas Simons was forced by the speaker to withdraw the term “deceitful� from his remarks in

the legislature, as he accused Bennett of keeping the changes secret until after last year’s election. “The fundamental principle is that the reserve was set up for the entire province, not for zones here and zones there,� Simons said.

Bennett said the only change to the Interior zones is the addition of “social and economic� factors in considering permitted uses. He gave the example from his Kootenay constituency of a market garden operator who was refused permission to build a second home on an unproductive part of the property so the next generation could take over the business.

in Langley, said she is looking forward to the changes that will allow development of new revenue. “The ALC is old and it hasn’t been updated in a long time,�

Driediger said. “On a day-to-day basis it makes it very difficult in farming, especially when you’re looking to be progressive.�

Faye Street, general manager of Kootenay Livestock Association, congratulated the ministers “for having the three Bs in the male anatomy to get this done – starting at the brain, backbone and work your way down.�

Street said young farmers are not entering the industry under the current conditions, and allowing them supplementary income will help maintain the farmers.

Feds appeal medical marijuana injunction

The federal government will appeal a March 21 court injunction that lets authorized patients temporarily keep growing their own medical marijuana past April 1, when the old system was to be outlawed.

The move by Health Canada keeps thousands of medical marijuana users off balance as to how long they can continue home growing under personal production licences.

They had been under a federal directive to stop growing, destroy any unused pot and con-

firm in writing by April 30 they had done so or face potential police enforcement.

Users behind a constitutional challenge of the new medical marijuana rules fear higher prices and lower quality pot under the new system of regulated commercial producers.

It’s unclear how quickly an appeal of the injunction will be heard, but the broader case is expected to go to trial sometime this year.

Health Minister Rona Ambrose said Monday she is working with organizations of health professionals to address

their concerns about the lack of dosage guidelines and appropriate health cautions for medical marijuana use. “They want clearer guidance on safety and effectiveness and want authorizations to be monitored,� Ambrose said.

She said it’s expected new measures and direction on dosage, educational materials and increased oversight will cut the risk of patients being harmed by being over-prescribed medical pot. “I want to emphasize that marijuana is not an approved drug or medicine in Canada.

Health Canada does not endorse the use of marijuana, but the courts have required reasonable access to a legal source of marijuana for medical purposes.�

Regulators will get data from licensed producers on how much pot each doctor prescribes to patients. Youth are especially susceptible to potential risks from marijuana use, according to Health Canada, which lists damage to mental function and mental health, including psychosis and schizophrenia.

Field wins best horseman award Aldergrove Star

A local man returned from an international colt starting competition with the best horseman award.

Jonathan Field, who was raised in Bradner, competed at the Road to the Horse in Lexington, Ky. March 13-16.

This event sees three or four elite horse trainers take untouched colts (any horse under three years of age that has never been saddled, etc.) and within four hours, guide them through an obstacle course using only “natural horsemanship” skills.

This is a system of developing a rela-

tionship with a horse, rather than breaking it. He doesn’t dominate the animal, but forms a partnership in which the horse wants to be with him.

Field’s skills earned him the inaugural Jack Brainard Best Horseman Award for his overall performance during the competition. Brainard is a legend in the equestrian world, according to Field.

“It was a real honour to receive this honour from him,” he said.

Field splits his time between Abbotsford and the 600-acre James Creek Ranch in the Nicola Valley, which he owns with his father Larry.

City of Richmond Councillor Harold Steves will join the Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) school of horticulture and the local non-profit Green Ideas Network for the pair’s final ‘Green Wednesday.’

The event on April 9 at KPU’s Langley campus will include a screening of the documentary film ‘GMO OMG’, which questions how genetically modified organisms (GMOs) affect our children, our planet and our food.

The final Green Wednesday in the 2013-2014 series is in celebration of

food and the 2014 season of the Langley Community Farmer’s Market, which begins May 21 in KPU Langley’s courtyard.

‘GMO OMG’ will be followed by a group discussion with Steves about the film and local sustainability issues.

A trio of dancers, nine musical acts and an acrobat have made it through to the final round of Langley Has Talent.

Among the performers advancing from the March 29 semifinal competition are Jet Tangerine and Hugh Barbour, a bouncy and colourful musical duo who kicked off the night with an uptempo performance of Train’s Hey Soul Sister.

Aerial acrobat Alexandra Susheski wowed the crowd with a routine that found her swinging on, in around and through a ring suspended above the stage at Christian Life Assembly.

Our Voice, an original song by Peace of Earth, also impressed the panel of judges — made up of tal-

ent agent Jolienne Moore, singer Natasha Zimbaro and event promoter John Donnelly — and got the nod.

Also selected to move on this year are: Kathleen and Jesse — singers; Joshua Goodman — rapper; Kaitlin Hartwig — dancer; Michaela Mulder — singer; Paige McLachlan — dancer; Quinn and Tonic — rock band; and Rachel Dunn and Colson Kinna — singing/guitar. Sisters Jazmine and Amanda Langset, who won over the crowd with the foot-stompin’ country tune, Better Dig Two by The Band Perry, advanced through the audience vote.

Final competition takes place at Christian Life Assembly on Saturday, April 12 at 7 p.m.

The Fraser Valley Symphony presents the concert “Hidden Gems” on Sunday, April 6 with music from the classical and romantic periods.

Award-winning violist Nikita Pogrebnoy of the Borealis String Quartet joins the symphony to perform the Stamitz Concerto and the Benda Grave.

The Aldergrove Kodiaks are once again the Pacific Junior Hockey League champions, after defeating the Richmond Sockeyes 5-1 at Richmond Arena on Monday, March 31.

It was the third win in a row for the Kodiaks who were down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series after losing to the Sockeyes on March 26

at Aldergrove Arena. The wins on March 27, 29 and 31 were a vindication for the Kodiaks after losing all four championship games last year in a sweep by the Sockeyes.

This season the two teams were evenly matched, and many observers had predicted the AldergroveRichmond series would go the full seven games.

The victory sets the stage for the Kodiaks’ next challenge, the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Nelson on April 10-13, hosted by the Nelson Leafs.

This B.C. championship series pits the Kodiaks against the Vancouver Island JHL champions, the Victoria Cougars, and the Kootenay JHL champions (yet to be determined with an April 1 finals between the Kamloops Storm and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks), along with the host Nelson Leafs of the Kootenay JHL. The winner of that series advances as the provincial champions to the Keystone Cup for the Western Canadian championships.

This series, hosted by Abbotsford Pilots on April 17-20, features the top teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario, along with the host Pilots.

The Sockeyes evened it up half a minute later and took a 2-1 lead early in the second, with scores by John Wesley (on a power play) and Mac Colasimone.

Aldergrove’s Ben Strybos and Brandon MacDonald are among 69 artistic gymnasts from throughout B.C. who have qualified to complete at the 2014 Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships.

The championships take place April 24-26 in Saskatoon.

The gymnasts were selected to Team BC following trials held in Kamloops in March.

The Western Canadian Gymnastics Championships are hosted annually by the western provinces and territories.

For many of the athletes competing at these championships, this is their first chance to compete as a member of Team BC. These championships help identify future High Performance athletes and prepare them for competitions such as Canadian Championships, Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Winter Games.

For other athletes, their participation in these championships may be the pinnacle of their careers.

Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships.

The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego.

The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast.
