Summit will feature speakers ranging from David Suzuki to the Musqueam First Nations by Katya Slepian Contributor What do the Fraser River, paleontologists, orcas, composting, barn owls and cedar weaving have in common? They’ll all be present at the over 15 workshops taking place at the 3rd annual REaDY Summit happening on Saturday, April 26 at McMath.
The opening ceremony will feature an elder from the Musqueam First Nations as a step towards a more public partnership between Richmond’s green initiatives and the Musqueam. “We need to go back to understand what sustainable living really meant. Our first peoples have always been in balance [with nature], otherwise they wouldn’t have lived here for generations. We want to re-identify some of the things that help communities stay sustainable.” The event will then kick off with a keynote address from David Suzuki followed by a question and answer period where students will get the chance to pick the brain of the famous environmentalist.

“We hope that coming to the REaDy Summit is a starting point for [the students] to realize that they can participate in change and make change happen,” says Kevin Lyseng, the teacher consultant for environmental stewardship at the Richmond School District. In that vein, students from eight schools were instrumental in organizing the event and three winners from a speech contest held at the schools will give speeches as part of the closing ceremonies. The REaDY Summit will take place at R.A. McMath Secondary School on April 26th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. For more information and to register, please visit www.readysummit.ca.
Richmond-based MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates will be providing eight radar surveillance systems for integration into Canada's Department of National Defence air force fleet. In a $64 million deal announced Monday, Canada's fleet of Lockheed CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol airplanes will be receiving the upgrades. The CP-140s are used by the Royal Canadian Air Force in activities such as domestic surveillance of Canada's maritime approaches, search-and-rescue missions, and maritime and overland operations. MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates’ radar surveillance systems employ a high-resolution imaging system that can detect, locate, classify, land and marine-based objects, including vehicles and ships. “This contract underscores the global need for critical multimission intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities that aid in the detection of illegal or hostile activity in maritime approaches or remote regions,” said MacDonald Dettwilers' Don Osborne.

Noemie Thomas set sights on making 2016 Olympic team
R
ichmondite Noemie Thomas is already stoked knowing her turn to represent Canada is coming in 2016. An elite Canadian swimmer and Canadian short course record holder in the 50-metre, the 18-year-old prodigy is in full bloom training and competing to make the 2016 Canadian Olympic team. She is taking it stroke by stroke and has her goggles set on the Olympics. In the swimming world, Thomas is short at 5’4” but size does not matter because this gifted athlete was only 16 when she set the Canadian short course record in the 50-metre butterfly in 25.76 at the short-course world championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Now 18, she keeps flying high and tall amongst her swimming competitors. Earlier this year, at the Speedo Western Canadian Championships competition meet,
Noemie Thomas set the Canadian short course record holder in the 50-metre butterfly.
Thomas set a meet record in the 200 meter butterfly in 2:08:11. The day before in the same meet she won the 100 meter butterfly. We have heard the old cliché—"Never judge a book by its cover"—and Thomas is an excellent example. Though shorter than many of her competitors, her talent, drive and passion for the sport more than makes up for any perceived deficiencies. She reminds of other high performance athletes like Martin St. Louis recently traded to the NY Rangers, who is shorter than his peers but plays a very large game of hockey. In a phone interview
from her home in Richmond, the downto-earth Thomas talked about her training and the importance of good nutrition. “We are in pretty hard training from the training camp in Hawaii so it was nice to go for a best time.” Thomas is going to the Canadian Swimming Trials held in Victoria in April, and if she does well then to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games. Thomas will compete in the 50-metre butterfly event. At age 12 Thomas had to choose between ballet and swimming and she hasn’t looked back since. “The night before training I have
to pack my lunch and clothes to go to practice and then to school. My mother helps me with my lunch.” Both her parents, Cecilia and Ken, have supported Thomas’s swimming career. When not training or going to school at Magee Secondary in Vancouver, she is competing. Often, Thomas begins her day at 5:00 am and attends swim practices at the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre in Vancouver. (Her swim club is the UBC Dolphins). “We do medicine balls workout Monday, Wednesday and Friday and weights Tuesday and Thursday. When there is a big competi-
and add in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. “I take multi-vitamins, iron and with two-fours of training I will have sometimes a crystal light (drink). After class I feel tired and I will have coffee.” Does she have any superstitions or ‘game-day rituals’? She said with a laugh, “I have to have my goggles at a certain side.” Look for more high
performances from Thomas over the next two years as her dedication, drive and passion continue to fuel her desire to be the best in her event. And our Olympic heroes in Sochi are providing a lot of inspiration to go with that. Christine Blanchette is a runner and writer. Follow her on Twitter (@ christineruns) and at www.christineruns.com.
