They’ll all be present at the over 15 workshops taking place at the 3rd annual REaDY Summit happening on Saturday, April 26 at McMath.
The opening ceremony will feature an elder from the Musqueam First Nations as a step towards a more public partnership between Richmond’s green initiatives and the Musqueam. “We need to go back to understand what sustainable living really meant. Our first peoples have always been in balance [with nature], otherwise they wouldn’t have lived here for generations. We want to re-identify some of the things that help communities stay sustainable.” The event will then kick off with a keynote address from David Suzuki followed by a question and answer period where students will get the chance to pick the brain of the famous environmentalist.

“We hope that coming to the REaDy Summit is a starting point for [the students] to realize that they can participate in change and make change happen,” says Kevin Lyseng, the teacher consultant for environmental stewardship at the Richmond School District. In that vein, students from eight schools were instrumental in organizing the event and three winners from a speech contest held at the schools will give speeches as part of the closing ceremonies. Richmond-based MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates will be providing eight radar surveillance systems for integration into Canada's Department of National Defence air force fleet. In a $64 million deal announced Monday, Canada's fleet of Lockheed CP-140 Aurora maritime patrol airplanes will be receiving the upgrades. The CP-140s are used by the Royal Canadian Air Force in activities such as domestic surveillance of Canada's maritime approaches, search-and-rescue missions, and maritime and overland operations. MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates’ radar surveillance systems employ a high-resolution imaging system that can detect, locate, classify, land and marine-based objects, including vehicles and ships. “This contract underscores the global need for critical multimission intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities that aid in the detection of illegal or hostile activity in maritime approaches or remote regions,” said MacDonald Dettwilers' Don Osborne.
