She summoned her father, Ede, who called 911 and then went around knocking on other neighbours’ doors to alert them of the potential hazard. Fire damage was extensive at the blaze’s point of origin, according to a city press release, but was reduced because residents kept doors throughout the home closed.

Car thefts down 84 per cent in Abby Lower Mainland sees 78 per cent decrease in 10 years Black Press
Car thefts in Abbotsford have dropped 84 per cent in the last 10 years and vehicle break-ins have decreased 83 per cent, according to statistics released last week. The stats were released by the provincial government, the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) and ICBC as part of Auto Crime Enforcement Month. They compare the number of auto-crime incidents from 2003 to 2013, showing major declines across the Lower Mainland, with much of the credit for the drop going to the bait car program. The numbers also indicate that a few communities, including Abbotsford, saw an increase in incidents from 2012 to 2013, which could be the result of a few active thieves, according to ICBC. In this city, there were 11 per cent more vehicle thefts and 10 per cent more break-ins during that period, but overall auto-crime trends have been decreasing over the years. This mimics the trend across the province, where vehicle thefts dropped 75 per cent and theft from vehicles declined 68 per cent from 2003 to 2013. More than 21,000 cars were stolen in the Lower Mainland in 2003, a year before the first use in B.C. of bait cars – vehicles implanted with cameras and technology to safely disable them as officers converge to catch thieves red-handed.
That number had dropped 78 per cent by 2013. ICBC road safety director John Dickinson said the payoff in reduced auto insurance claims has been dramatic. ICBC handled $98 million in stolen auto claims in 2003, when an average of 70 cars were stolen every day in B.C. By 2013 that had dropped to $27 million in claims, or 17 stolen vehicles per day. The single biggest 10-year decreases in car theft have been recorded in Coquitlam (down 88 per cent from 2003), White Rock (down 87 per cent) and Burnaby and New Westminster (both down 86 per cent.) The bait car program, run by IMPACT, has since expanded to include boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers and other property. Insp. Peter Jadis, the head of IMPACT, said the team’s officers are now targeting larger scale auto rings that are running chop shops and, in some cases, simply stealing cars for the value of the metal. Police say the items most often stolen from vehicles are: smartphones; other personal electronics like tablets, laptops and GPS units; work tools; credit cards and identification; stereo equipment; cash and change; car parts and accessories; garage door openers; sunglasses; and keys. Ford F-series pickup trucks (2005-2006) were among the most targeted vehicles in the Fraser Valley, behind 1998-2000 Honda Civics.

Tim Neufeld of Abbotsford won a Juno on Sunday night.
Singer Tim Neufeld of Abbotsford received a Juno Award on Sunday for Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year. Neufeld picked up the Canadian music-industry award for his first solo album, Trees. Neufeld is the former lead singer of the Canadian Christian band Starfield, which itself received four Juno Award nominations, one Western Canadian Music Award and several Gospel Music Association Canada Covenant Awards and Shai Awards. He formed the band in Winnipeg with his
brother Jon, and they released their self-titled debut album in 2004. The band moved to Abbotsford in fall 2006 after living in Nashville, and they concluded their record deal with EMI/Sparrow in early 2011. They followed up with an independent record, The Kingdom, in January 2012. Neufeld, who is married with two young children, launched Trees last June and is currently on a cross-Canada tour. The Juno Awards were held Sunday in Winnipeg.

A woman who was banned from conducting unregistered mortgage broker activities in B.C. and Ontario is now facing six fraud and theft charges in Abbotsford. Satvir Brar, 27, who also goes by the names Nikki Brar and Nikki Perdja, has been charged with two counts of theft over $5,000, two counts of fraud over $5,000, one count of theft, and one count of fraud for incidents that occurred in June, July and August 2011. She is next scheduled to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on April 7. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the charges relate to two complainants and “investments that didn’t turn out to be favourable and questions about the legitimacy of the investments.” He said cheques provided to the complainants to reimburse their lost funds allegedly bounced. One person allegedly lost $1,000, while
the other was allegedly out about $11,000, MacDonald said. Brar was the subject of two prior “cease and desist” orders prohibiting her from taking part in unlicensed mortgage broker activities. The first compliance order was issued by the B.C. government’s registrar of mortgage brokers in March 2011. That order states that Brar was acting as a mortgage broker through the companies Private Lending Inc., Canada Lending, and Alliance Brokers North America, none of which are registered as mortgage brokers in B.C. The documents state that a complainant, who wanted to obtain a second mortgage of $60,000 in the fall of 2010, found Brar online through the advertisement of mortgage broker services. The person was informed that Brar had secured a $60,000 loan and required a lender’s fee of $1,000. The complainant did not receive the loan money and repeatedly requested a return
of the $1,000 deposit but it never appeared, according to the documents. A second person, who was seeking a $20,000 loan and also found Brar online in November 2010, was asked to send a $500 fee, which would be refunded if the loan did not proceed. That person never received the loan nor was he refunded his $500, the order states. Government staff looking into the matters discovered that Brar had been licensed as a mortgage agent in Ontario from July 1, 2008 to March 31, 2010 with a financial business, but her employment was terminated and her licence expired. The B.C. registrar of mortgage brokers concluded that Brar was conducting mortgage broker activity in the province without being registered to do so. The order prohibited her from conducting any further such activity. A similar order was issued in July 2011 by the Superintendent of Financial Services in Ontario, where Brar resided before moving to B.C.

A street race that ended in a collision injured two people on Saturday night. The crash took place in the 3400 block of McCallum Road – west of Highway 11 – at about 6 p.m., when a 2009 Toyota Corolla collided with a fence and several wooden pallets. One of the two occupants had to be cut out of the badly damaged vehicle. Const. Pat Kelly of the Abbotsford Police Department said witnesses saw the vehicle reach estimated speeds of 120 km/h in the 50 km/h zone. The two men inside the vehicle, both in their early 20s, sustained minor injuries. “It’s surprising that they (were) minor injuries, given the nature of the impact and the alleged speed (of the vehicle),” Kelly said. The other vehicle involved in the race left the scene.

From disappointment to hope
Today, the first meeting of a new Abbotsford homelessness task force will be held. It comes more than nine months after the infamous chicken manure dumping incident at a popular homeless camp on Gladys Avenue. That appalling decision by the city staff and managers involved inexorably changed the nature of this issue in Abbotsford. If there is a positive note to be placed on the incident, it’s that homelessness – not a new issue here by any means – gained a much higher level of public awareness. As a result, many imagined last June’s illconsidered action would galvanize the city into action on the issue. However, the opposite occurred. It has been the homeless who have seized the initiative, staging protests and camping in parks and on public property, pushing the city to gain court injunctions to move them out and clean up the mess remaining. Last month, a split council squandered a prime opportunity to bring in an excellent solution in the form of supported low-barrier housing involving Abbotsford
Community Services. Millions of dollars in provincial capital and operating funding will very likely go elsewhere as the mayor and three councillors bowed to opposition. Into that vacuum was finally thrown the concept of a task force. It’s not that the issue hasn’t been discussed previously in this city, which formed the Abbotsford Social Development and Advisory Committee eight years ago. Apprently, all the dialogue in that time period, and fresh talks with stakeholders since the manure incident, must be repeated. In fact, more talk will take place in a second group – a “homeless society” – recently formed by downtown business association members and others. The opposition to the housing project, and the lack of leadership coming from city hall has been acutely disappointing. In that context, however, it intensifies public hope for timely, realistic and creative solutions emanating from these two new discussion groups. The expectations are high, and so they should be.

A few months back, I received a notification which advised me that I had to declare whether Buckerfields was a “producer” of printed paper or packaging material. If so, we would have to implement an “approved stewardship plan” to deal with the material. Otherwise we would have to join another “stewardship plan” and pay fees to that plan holder. I thought it was a scam. But I looked into it further and determined that there was indeed regulatory provisions in effect which stated this very thing, and according to the regulations, Buckerfields is now a “producer” of printed paper and packaging material, with the best example being our Buckerfields feed bags. I then discussed the alternatives with a Ministry of Environment official and came to realize that we had no choice but to join the only approved stewardship plan in the province, MMBC. We signed the MMBC contract. But we also read it. And it stated that MMBC had to file audited financial statements on its website. I recently went to the website
and there are no audited financial statements. Now, several months later, I have discovered the following: T MMBC is a corporation under the Societies Act comprised of three directors, two of which live in Ontario. None of the directors have public sector credentials. All of the directors represent large corporate interests. T MMBC is not accountable to any government agency, appointed official, elected official or any other government body other than the Registrar of Companies under the Societies Act. T MMBC is not governed by the province’s Financial Administration Act which sets out the rules for the administration of all public monies. T None of the monies collected by MMBC, including the fees Buckerfields is supposed to pay, go to the Public Accounts of the Province or any other government organization. T MMBC is not subject to oversight by
the Auditor General of B.C. T Under MMBC’s stewardship plan as approved by the provincial government, MMBC has the authority to charge companies like Buckerfields unlimited fees based on whatever MMBC spends, regardless of what the actual costs are to recycle our feed bags and regardless of the fact that we already pay municipal taxes in all eight of our locations. T MMBC has the authority to come into any municipality in the province and offer financial incentives to the locally elected government to do what MMBC wants in the area of waste collection and recycling; if the locally elected government refuses, MMBC has the authority to do what it wants anyway. The municipal governments of the province do not know the background of MMBC, and don’t yet realize that the fees that MMBC is charging to Buckerfields and all the other companies amounts to double taxation. to have to give up that tax base they have for waste collection and recycling because the shift to producers paying directly for waste collection and recycling eliminates the need and justification for consumers i.e. property taxpayers, to pay for these services through the municipalities. The provincial government did not consult with the municipal governments or the public, but companies like Buckerfields are pointing it out because until it is resolved, we are being taxed twice for the same service, and residential taxpayers (including me) are being taxed for something that someone else is actually paying for. Taxpayers and municipal governments were not consulted as to whether they really want to shift the financing and control of municipal waste and recycling services out of the municipal jurisdiction, that is, the jurisdiction of democratically elected municipal officials into the hands of a corporation under the Societies Act that is accountable to no one and is outside the jurisdiction of the provincial Auditor General. Taxpayers and voters are unaware that

Still discussing same issues of homelessness Having been active in business and paying taxes in this community since 1970, I choose to add my voice to the recent dialogue regarding social issues. I would encourage either the Abbotsford News or the City of Abbotsford to publish the names and addresses of all rehabilitation and supportive facilities and group homes. I believe this would answer those who claim the community’s prevailing attitude is “not in my backyard” and would prove
to look more like YIMBY. We rarely hear of any problems about these facilities or from their neighbours, as they are well managed and work to respect and get along with their neighbours. Problem-solving happens where the problem exists, not by chasing it to another location. The creation of the C7 commercial zone was to prohibit certain types of businesses deemed to be problematic from operating in that zone, but not restricting them elsewhere in the community. There has been
some redevelopment in the C7 zoned area, but no more so than other parts of the business area of the city. So what has changed since the enactment of the C7 zone? Not much. We are still discussing the same issues of homelessness, but now we have the more visible congregating of homeless in tent camps. Could we possibly learn from other communities and rehab providers which have faced and dealt with similar challenges? John Klassen, Abbotsford

Abbotsford lost an early community builder on March 19. Charlie Mathers wasn’t born in Abbotsford. His father, fondly known as the “Mayor of Straiton,” was away at war in 1916, so his mother, Jessie, moved to Vancouver with her daughter to await the birth of her baby. After the war, the Mathers family moved back to Sumas Mountain where Dave’s store “The Upper Store” served the needs of the soldier resettlement project going on at Sumas Lake. Like other pioneer kids, Charlie helped out at home, in the store and in driving the family cattle up the mountain in a family move in 1925. There was a lot happening on Sumas Mountain. The underground mines were in full swing, supplying clay to the forerunner of the Clayburn Company. There was a need for timbers for the mines, land that needed clearing, and forest to harvest. Dave built a home

the fees being charged by MMBC are so onerous that they will cause newspaper closures and job losses of 300-500 in the newspaper industry in British Columbia, even though recycled newsprint is actually very valuable. In finding all this out, I lament the fact that none of this was introduced into the legislature for proper debate because it means that instead of spending my days managing the sale of chicks and garden supplies at Buckerfields, I have to spend my time trying to revive democratic processes in British Columbia, retroactively. I find it appalling. My position as of the time of this writing is this, we ain’t paying a dime to MMBC and neither should anyone else, not until: T The provincial government reconciles what it is doing with the municipal governments and municipal taxpayers so that taxpayers don’t have to pay twice. T The provincial government takes back the legislation which calls us “producers” and “blames us” for the choices made by manufacturers and indeed consumers that are completely outside of our control. T Any monies charged under the auspices of the Recyling Regulation are included in the Public Accounts of the Province and subject to the provisions of the Financial Administration Act and the Auditor General Act. T Whatever is going to be done is introduced into the Legislative Assembly in the form of a

bill so that the proper public debate can occur. T Insofar as MMBC has not filed its audited financial statements since inception, and the period of time not reported spans more than two years, and insofar as MMBC is actually a taxing and funding agency, there be an independent public enquiry into the financial operations, sources and uses of funds, contractual procedures and expenditures of MMBC. No, Buckerfields is not paying a dime until this cash and power grab is unraveled and revealed for what it is. One final word, 96 per cent of all printed paper and packaging material is already being picked up or deposited into municipally financed facilities. Despite what MMBC is saying, at least 53 per cent of that is already being recycled and it is very likely that that number was seriously understated to give the government a reason for its MMBC cash and power grab. In reality, there is no basis for setting up a recycling dictatorship and charging punitive fees to companies like Buckerfields at all. Recycling is a booming business with rapidly increasing prices of marketable commodities. Could that be why the board of MMBC is all big business and outside the jurisdiction of the auditor general? We don’t have to change a thing to see recycling take off in B.C., in the hands of our elected municipal officials. We need to send the MMBC regime to the recycle bin.

Field wins best horseman award Bradner-born man competed at Road to the Horse

An Abbotsford-born man returned from an international colt starting competition with the best horseman award. Jonathan Field, who was raised in Bradner, competed at the Road to the Horse in Lexington, Kentucky, March 13-16. This event sees three or four elite horse trainers take untouched colts
(any horse under three years of age that has never been saddled) and within four hours over two days, guide them through an obstacle course using only “natural horsemanship” skills. This is a system of developing a relationship with a horse, rather than breaking it. He doesn’t dominate the animal, but forms a partnership in which the horse wants to be with him. Field’s skills earned him the
inaugural Jack Brainard Best Horseman Award for his overall performance during the competition. Brainard is a legend in the equestrian world, according to Field. “It was a real honour to receive this honour from him,” he said. Field splits his time between Abbotsford and the 600-acre James Creek Ranch in the Nicola Valley, which he owns with his father Larry.

Upgrades needed on Abby wells Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News
A halt in supply from Abbotsford and Mission’s main water supply last fall led to failures in the well system and operational difficulties. Council recently approved an additional $153,000 be designated to the water budget for critical well upgrades. The wells are only operated during peak demand to keep costs down. The wells were used for prolonged periods after a landslide severed the Norrish Creek water supply pipe on Oct. 2, keeping the water source off-line until late November. Norrish Creek supplies water to both Abbotsford and Mission, and when the supply was shut down, Mission received water from Cannell Lake and Abbotsford drew water from wells. Most of the wells’ infrastructure is 25 to 45 years old and has not been upgraded in that time. The wells generally supply additional water to deal with short-term high demand. But with Norrish down, the ongoing use quickly deteriorated their condition. The total funds for the work is $200,000 of which Abbotsford will pay 76 per cent, and Mission will pay 24 per cent. The cost to repair the damage to the Norrish Creek supply cost $450,000, with $150,000 paid for by Emergency Management BC and the remaining $300,000 by city water reserves. The cities will also take part in a reassessment of the operational strategy for water use. The Norrish outage revealed that it is critical that there is an adequate water level in Cannell Lake to ensure a supply of water to Mission. Staff say that to maintain an adequate water level in the lake it will be necessary to increase the contribution from the wells.

Introducing regular physical activity into your life is an important first step towards better health, a happier mindset, and more. The whole family will benefit from increased activity and getting on the road to a healthier lifestyle. There are so many known benefits to physical activity and an active lifestyle. Among them are a reduced risk of heart disease, premature death and stroke. Being active has also been proven to help improve self-esteem and confidence, help you sleep better, increase your energy and reduce depression, among many other things. Furthermore, it helps maintain functional independence, mobility, and bone health. For many of us, it can be quite daunting to take that first step towards an active lifestyle. And it can be more challenging to start something new without any help. The good news is residents of BC have access to a free physical activity counselling service called the Physical Activity Line (PAL). Through a phone call or online, qualified exercise professionals are available to provide exercise and physical activity advice and help you develop a customized physical activity plan for every member of the family, from children to older adults. When it comes to physical activity, more is better. To achieve the health benefits, it is important to try and progress towards the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children and youth and 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity each week for adults. Adults and older adults should also add muscle- and bone-
strengthening activities that work the major muscle groups at least twice a week to help with balance and prevent falls for those with mobility impairments. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean playing a sport or going to the gym. Playing a family game of tag, going for a swim or taking a walk outside with the family pet or to the store to get groceries count towards the physical activity recommendations. Try out something new; you may find your new favourite activity! In any case, you’re bound to have some fun and feel like a happier and healthier you. Reach to feature spring exhibits The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford opens its spring exhibitions during a free public reception on April 17 at 7 p.m. with the works of bill bissett, Simone Jones, Fraser Valley chapter of Canadian Federation of Artists and The Leonard Frank Studio. “ ‘Textual vishyuns: image and text in the work of bill bissett is not only a coup for Abbotsford but for all of Canada, because it is only the second major exhibition of bissett’s work and the first major retrospective of his work,” says Dr. Carl Peters, guest curator of this exhibition and author of the first scholarly study of bill bissett. Based on Carl Peters’ book textual vishyuns: image and text in the work of bill bissett, the exhibition will comprise bissett’s total art: assemblages, collages, paintings, drawings and the book lunaria. bill bissett is a unique figure in the history of Canadian literature and art, and a humanist, a political thinker, a social activist and a painter. He is the author of over 80 books of poetry and the founder of blewointment press, which published the early
work of many experimental poets, including Milton Acorn, Margaret Atwood, D. A. Levy and bpNichol. A pair of breakthrough performances against an old nemesis highlighted a solid road weekend for the Abbotsford Heat. The local AHL club won backto-back games vs. the Utica Comets, prevailing 2-1 on Friday thanks to Ben Street’s overtime goal and Joni Ortio’s 43 saves. They followed with a 7-2 blowout win on Saturday behind a twogoal outing from Brett Olson, the first career AHL goal from Jordan Kremyr, and a three-point night (one goal, two assists) from Street. The Heat had dropped seven of their previous eight games vs. Utica, and it was gratifying to fashion such positive results against the Vancouver Canucks affiliate. “It was a team we felt we matched up well against, we just hadn’t beaten them that much,” head coach Troy Ward said. “I liked our (previous) games against them – we usually outchanced them and kind of controlled the puck, but just found ways to not finish the job.” The Heat capped a threegames-in-three-days stretch with a Sunday afternoon tilt against the Toronto Marlies, but ran out of gas in a 6-4 loss. 604.853.1144 CARLSON, ROBERTA LILLIAN Roberta Lillian Carlson, 63, passed away on March 30, 2014 at Shuswap General Hospital in Salmon Arm BC with family by her side. She was born on January 28, 1951 in Smithers, BC to Kenneth and Pearl Jameson. Roberta grew up in Duncan BC. After high school she completed a Home Economics degree at UBC. After her 3rd year of University, she worked a summer job in Abbotsford for the Department of Agriculture. While there, she met her future husband Dick Carlson whose family were long term dairy farmers from the Abbotsford area. After her University graduation, Roberta and Dick were married in 1973 and she taught school at Chilliwack Secondary. With the birth of her first child, Roberta left teaching to raise her family. In 2004, Roberta and Dick sold their dairy farm in Abbotsford and relocated to Salmon Arm. Over the years in Abbotsford and Salmon Arm, Roberta took an active leadership role in 4H and also coordinated many dairy related activities involving youth. Roberta was preceded in death by her parents Ken and Pearl Jameson and her in-laws Stanley and Lillian Carlson. Roberta is survived by her husband Dick, sons Kevin and Brad (Emily) of Salmon Arm, daughter Kristine Rietveld (Jason) of Fort Saskatchewan, AB her grandchildren Tyson, Mikail, Troy, Janaye, Annabelle and Isaac, her sisters Lorraine Jameson of Williams Lake and Ruth Salmon (Keith) of Parksville. A memorial service will be held at Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church at 1191 22nd Street Northeast, Salmon Arm on Tuesday, April 8 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the BC Cancer Society. It is with sadness, but also gratitude for a life well lived that we share with you the passing of Ray. Ray passed away peacefully, with his daughter at his side, at Saanich Peninsula Hospital after a brief illness. Ray was predeceased by his wife Valerie (De Lair) in 2008 whom he missed deeply. Ray is lovingly remembered by his sons Brian (Sara), Gordon (Natalie), and his daughter Maureen (John), grandchildren, Erika and Tyler Nesbitt, four great grandchildren, as well as step grandchildren, Lisa Clarke and David Taylor. Ray was born in Biggar, Sask., spending most of life in BC. He was proud to be a 25 year member of the RCMP. His work took him and his family to Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, Victoria, Terrace and Prince Rupert. In 1974 Ray retired, subsequently
working for the National Harbours Board in Prince Rupert, for 10 years. He also served on the Prince Rupert Municipal Council. Ray and Val retired to Abbotsford in 1988. Ray was proud that they travelled to every continent but one. They spent most winters in Arizona. Ray enjoyed wine making, woodworking sports fishing, but above all, loved his garden and greenhouse. The family extend their heartfelt thanks to Ron, Ann, Drew, Eileen and Sharon and the many wonderful friends and neighbours who looked after Dad so well. He was deeply appreciative of your kindness and generosity. The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to the physicians and nursing staff who assisted with Ray’s care, particularly at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Their knowledge, support and compassion will always be remembered. In keeping with Ray’s constant desire to help those less fortunate, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation Smile Canada, which repairs cleft lip/ palate and facial deformities for children globally. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tobias into the presence of his Lord. His life ended suddenly in a tragic car accident, along with two co-workers, on Highway 33 near Sedley, SK on his way home from work. He will be remembered by his wife, Daniela (Fast) and his young daughter, Annabel. As well as, his parents, John and Irina Friesen, siblings Daniela (Ronny with Eric, Katie, Caleb), Markus (Marilyn with Noah, Makayla), Johnny, Joseph (Danae). Tobias Friesen was born in Salzkotten, Germany on May 14, 1984. He immigrated to Canada, as a young boy, with his family and eventually settled in Abbotsford, BC. He met his wife, Daniela Fast, at TREK in the summer of 2010 and they were married on August 26, 2011. He became a proud father to Annabel on February 10, 2013. Last October, he moved his family to White City, SK for his employment as an electrician. Toby enjoyed many activities including travelling, reading, hunting, fishing, camping, working with the youth at King Road MB Church and at TREK, playing games and sports including hockey, snowboarding and rollerblading. Toby gave his life over to Jesus Christ at the young age of 11 and was baptized at age 24 in Thailand. He shared his love for his Saviour with everyone he met. He had a genuine love for people, sharing his big bear hugs with all. Although Toby’s life on this earth was short he lived his life to eventually hear the words “well done good and faithful servant”.
Klassen Agnes Agnes Klassen (nee Janzen) passed away March 29, 2014 at the Cascade Lodge at the age of 89. Agnes is survived by Jacob, her loving husband of 65 years; four children, Bill (Sandra), Hilda (Bob), Eleanor (Mark), and Ken (Theresa), eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, as well as three siblings, Mary, Margaret, and Hank, and was predeceased by siblings Helen and John. Agnes was born in the Ukraine on February 17, 1925 and immigrated to Canada in 1948. Agnes and her husband Jacob were married on October 2, 1948. They were married in Chilliwack, which was their home throughout their married life. Agnes will be remembered as a selfless and compassionate wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and greatgrandmother. She was a woman of strong character and faith; she acted as a exemplary role model for the large group of family and friends who deeply mourn her passing. The family extends their gratitude to Dr. Fitzpatrick, the staff at the Cascade Lodge, and Pastor Wilf Richert for their kindness and unwavering support. Agnes will be sorely missed by us all. Also mother-in-law Gail Williams (Fred) and many, many loved nieces and nephews. Garry was predeceased by wife Patti Neufeld and parents Isaak and Helena Neufeld. Garry’s home was always filled with lots of love and laughter so he dedicated his life’s work to building homes for others to fill with love and laughter of their own. STINSON, George Samuel In loving memory of George Stinson who passed away in Mission Hospital on March 19, 2014 at the age of 91. George lived a long and full life. While serving overseas (World War II) with the R.A.C.F. he met and married the love of his life Kate. George worked as a logger for many years. He lived in Haney and then Mission, B.C. He was very active in sports, baseball, lacrosse, hang-gliding and golfing. He will be dearly missed. His quick wit was appreciated by all. Predeceased by his loving wife Kate and his sister Dorothy. Survived by his sons John (Jacquie), Billy. Grandchildren Natasha (Dean Fraser), Richard (Tara), Tyler and Bobby. Great grandchildren Landon and Madeleine. REMPEL Leona (Lee) Marie (nee MacDonnell) 1937 ~ 2014 After a long lengthy battle with cancer, Lee passed away on March 29th, 2014 at home. She was predeceased by her parents Leo and Mary; her siblings Francis and Harold. She is survived by her husband of 53 years John; daughters Sonya (Phil), Shelley (Randy), son Steve and grandsons Brent and Kyle along with many nieces and nephews. Lee was born in Margaree Harbour, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on May 28th, 1937. She left at age 18 and joined the R.C.A.F. In 1960 she met her future husband John in Bagotville, Quebec. They married and later moved to Portage La Prairie, Moose Jaw, Germany, Comox eventually settling in Abbotsford. Along this journey they raised three children. Lee was a stay at home Mom who you could usually find in the kitchen. She loved to entertain, travel, camp, fish, play scrabble and anything else that related to family activities and friends. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, Dr. Winston and the Home Care Nurses for all their compassionate care and support. ROBERTSON John Wayne (Jack) John Wayne (Jack) Robertson, 71 of Mission, BC passed away March 28, 2014. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Juliette, daughters Deidra, Renée (Jared), and Randi, grandchildren Jaiden and Casey, and by his siblings, Joseph and Sherry. He will be lovingly remembered by many dear relatives including the Lizotte, Proulx and Lambke families and missed by countless friends, near and far. He was predeceased by his parents John and Eleanor, and by his son, John Albert. Born June 8, 1942, Jack grew up in Roblin, MB. In 1966, he married his beautiful bride and they moved to BC, and to Mission in 1975. He spent his career in the flexographic printing industry, first as a pressman, then as production supervisor and finally in press ink sales. Jack was fiercely proud and loyal, with an extremely quick wit and sharp mind. He enjoyed golfing, taking road trips, playing cards, doing crosswords puzzles, and beating everyone at Jeopardy. Family and friends are welcome to attend service Thursday, April 3, at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mission. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted by the Kidney Foundation of Canada, who gave support generously during Jack’s last years.
