Stroke victims will benefit from campaign Laverne Dubois is leading the charge in Shuswap Hospital Foundation’s current fundraising campaign.

One of the campaign goals is to purchase a $205,000 CT scanner upgrade to optimize efficiency and clarity of the scans.

Laverne has a vested interest in raising the funds as access to the scanner in Shuswap Lake Hospital optimized her stroke recovery.

Like other patients in Salmon Arm, Revelstoke and surrounding communities, Laverne’ was able to get timely treatment because Shuswap Lake General Hospital has been designated a thrombolytic centre for stroke treatment – a direct result of acquiring a CT scanner.

Thrombolytic medications are used in the treatment of some strokes to clear blocked arteries.

In select cases, it may reverse some or all of the stroke symptoms.

Early diagnosis and treatment can make a tremendous difference for a stroke patient’s recovery.

Laverne knows that all too well.

The morning of October 15, 2013 began pretty much like any other for Laverne and her husband Ray.

After breakfast the couple decided it was time to clean up the gardens for winter and take waste to the local landfill.

Ray headed out shortly before 10 while Laverne went out to the garden.

She had not been there long when she began to feel unwell.

Increasingly unsteady, Laverne made her way back to the carport and sat down.

After being away for about 20 minutes Ray became uneasy and felt he should return home, where he found Laverne still sitting in the carport.

He helped his wife up the stairs into the kitchen, where Laverne remembers developing severely limited upward vision.

That is the last thing she remembers before waking up in a Shuswap Lake General Hospital bed.

Back in the kitchen, Ray told his wife she should sit down, but Laverne refused.

After 50 years of being together Ray recognized his wife’s behaviour was not normal and suggested calling the ambulance.

He knew the situation was extremely serious when

New OR equipment improves efficiency Keeping her eyes open at a health event is helping to keep patients in the upright position.

Last year Nurse Susan Schmidt saw a patient-positioning system and contributed toward the purchase of one for the operating room at Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

“Instead of a nurse having to hold the patient in position while surgery is performed on his or her back, the device gives the patient an added sense of support and security while relieving a nurse to assist elsewhere.

On the OR front, doctors are seeing more clearly now, as a new laparoscopic tower has improved the view.

The clarity allows the surgeons to better see and identify vessels and organs, notes a Shuswap Lake Hospital Foundation newsletter.

The tower is also used by visiting orthopaedic surgeons when performing knee scopes and urologists doing cystoscopies.

This is the second tower the foundation has purchased for the OR, bringing the local hospital up to speed with the need.

“Thank you to the foundation from all the OR staff. Your support over the last five years has been tremendous,” wrote OR clinical care leader Irene Moncrieff in an email. “We can now perform two laparoscopic surgeries at the same time, increasing patient access.”

A new patient positioning system allows nurses to assist in other areas of the operating room.

Thanks to the continuing generosity of private individuals and the corporate community, the foundation continues to help improve care at SLGH. ■

Laverne, who had continued to argue with him, looked at him and said “who are you? “What are you doing in my house?”

Paramedics were quick to respond to Ray’s 911 call.

Within a matter of minutes the ambulance arrived and Ray met EMT Jim Willis and his partner in the driveway.

Ray explained that he thought Laverne might be having a stroke.

Laverne’s memory of waking up in the hospital is with a doctor telling her to squeeze his hands. When she did, he went to the foot of the bed and asked her to push against his hands with her feet, which she did.

“We made it girl” he said.

Three days later Laverne went home with no physical or intellectual deficits.

She required no special treatment or rehab and other than feeling a bit tired, she had no other symptoms.

Laverne is sharing her story to remind others how important it is to seek medical care and how lucky she is that Shuswap Lake General Hospital is a designated thrombolytic care centre.

And she is determined to pay it forward by helping the Shuswap Hospital Foundation raise funds to upgrade the CT scanner.

Early intervention can improve psychosis Caught early enough, psychosis can be treated – sometimes for good.

Without early intervention, secondary conditions can develop –depression, anxiety, substance abuse and/or hospitalization.

“This has a huge impact socially and vocationally and psychologically for the family and there’s the risk of suicide,” says Shawna Rothwell, early psychosis intervention clinician with Interior Health’s Mental Health and Substance Abuse office in Salmon Arm. “Psychosis is a break from reality, a chemical imbalance and early psychosis would be the first experience with the disruption of how their mind is working.”

This could include some loss of contact with reality, hallucinations, delusions, paranoia or disorganized thoughts or speech.

Delusions sometimes include the false belief that someone is following a person or that they have special powers or abilities. And sometimes people living with psychosis have difficulty staying on track with conversations.

Other symptoms could include hearing, seeing, smelling or tasting something that isn’t real, but is very real for the individual, adds Rothwell, Noting psychosis doesn’t discriminate based on socioeconomic status or ethnicity.

experiencing their first episode of psychosis,” says Rothwell, “In a youth or young adult where there is a genetic risk, substance use can be a stressor and bring about the symptoms of psychosis.”

progression of symptoms and the risk of more chronic conditions such as schizophrenia, and lead to a positive recovery, says Rothwell, noting clients range in age from 17 to 30.

The most common age for a first “psychotic break” is 17 to 24 for males and late 20s for women, who tend to develop symptoms later.

Rothwell says the majority of young people know they are not feeling right and seek help, but she points out that if someone is paranoid or their insight is affected, the goal then is to try to work with the family to get help.

Unfortunately, early warning signs are similar to normal teen behaviour – irritability, trouble sleeping or sleeping all the time.

But it is important to seek help if family sees a change in a young person’s functioning, such as someone who did really well in school and liked it suddenly withdraws.

“These are important (signs), particularly if there is a history of mental illness in the family,” says Rothwell, recommending concerned families reach out first to their family doctor or school counsellor, who may connect them with Mental Health Services.

“There is no waiting list,” emphasizes Rothwell. “Within a few days, people will have contact with someone.”

For youths under the age of 17, help is available at Child and Youth Mental Health at 250-832-1719.

In the fall Rothwell mentored fourth-year Thompson Rivers University nursing student Jaime Smart.

Travelling to the Adult Mental Health Services office in Salmon Arm two to three times a week to fulfill her practicum, not only gave Smart the clinical experience she needs, but a desire to work in mental health.

“I spent time learning about taking a leadership role to bring awareness to the community on psychosis and to work with decreasing stigma within the community,” says Smart.

“Through discussion, I became intrigued with that and the need for awareness within the community and families, the importance of early intervention and ways for people to get help.”

Smart’s work in Salmon Arm included working one-onone with clients, developing wellness and care plans and educating clients on proper hygiene and nutrition.

Sorrento Health Care Centre opens

After months of preparation, the Sorrento Health Care Centre held its grand opening in January, with more than 80 people attending.

The centre had been up and running for more than a month and the office has been busy.

Many of those who turned up at the Jan. 17 grand opening listened to speeches from Columbia Shuswap Regional District director Paul Demenok, Interior Health representative Kirstine Hill, SACA president Barry Stokes and nurse practitioner Judy Deringer, all of whom spoke about the importance of the clinic to the area.

MLA Greg Kyllo sent a letter to be read out at the event, as he was unable to attend.

The clinic has exceeded Deringer’s expectations, and she remains amazed at the way the community has embraced her and the health-care society’s goals.

Deringer is able to assess patients, order diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, blood work and ultra sounds.

She can diagnose and treat chronic health conditions, write prescriptions, refer patients to specialists and assist patients in managing most chronic health problems.

She can also help in prenatal issues as well.

Appointments are available Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m. To make an appointment, call the office at 250-803-5251.

Not only is the group searching for a doctor to come into the area, but they would also like to see specialists such as dietitians, diabetic specialists, counsellors and others who could offer their services to the area.

Act quickly if signs of stroke are present Stroke is the third-leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in Canada. Treatment is complex and time sensitive.

In light of this, Interior Health urges residents to know the signs of stroke and get help as quickly as possible.

Remember ‘FAST: Face, Arm, Speech, Time.’ If the face is drooping on one side, or there is weakness in one arm, or if speech sounds slurred or strange, it is time to call 911.”

Interior Health continues to build on its success in improving treatment for stroke patients, with the (ageadjusted) rate of deaths due to stroke decreasing over the last four years.

Interior Health participates in the BC Patient Safety

& Quality Council Stroke Collaborative. Teams at five Interior Health sites have been participating in this Collaborative since September 2011: Shuswap Lake General Hospital in Salmon Arm; Royal Inland in Kamloops, Kelowna General, Cranbrook’s East Kootenay Regional Hospital and the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail.

The Collaborative teams are working together to ensure efficient pre-hospital care, increase the rate of rapid medical interventions, further best-practice in Emergency Department stroke care, and help ensure patients at high risk for stroke receive the necessary follow-up.

Hearing deterioration can be gradual According to Statistics Canada, more than one million adults across the country report having a hearing-related disability. This is 50% greater than the number of people reporting troubles with their eyesight (StatsCan, 2002).

Hearing is very different from eyesight it’s a disability that sneaks up on people. Hearing loss is less obvious than visual impairment. When looking at a book, it is apparent when the words become blurry on the page - you can’t fake it. Hearing loss is often subtle, easy to deny, or blame on others. Deterioration occurs gradually over time until words begin to sound muffled. When hearing deteriorates, it often affects the high frequencies, making words sound unclear or “mumbled”. Often the speaker is blamed for not speaking clearly, when the hearing impairment is the culprit. Hearing Aids can be a great help but it’s important to understand what they can and can’t do for you.

Today’s hearing aids are primarily digital technology. The average hearing aid life span is approximately 5-6 years, and the cost will vary depending on the type of technology inside the hearing instrument. It’s very important to note that hearing aids do not return hearing to normal, and should only be considered an aid. When looking at the big picture of hearing loss, aids are only ¼ of the picture, the other ¾ is the responsibility of the hearing aid user.

Weight loss can be a complicated process We have all been taught the equation Eat less food + Exercise more = Weight Loss. Unfortunately, no matter how much we believe it, this just isn’t true. There are a lot more factors involved. What inability to lose weight and keep it off is not, is a willpower problem! What it is, can be any combination of the following: A stress response Stress makes us fat in many, many different ways. It will preferentially put pounds on around our waistline, the most dangerous place to deposit fat. It can raise insulin levels, predisposing us to metabolic syndrome &/or type 2 diabetes.

It can remove our pleasure in food. It can ruin our digestion and frequently causes heartburn. One simple trick to help with stress and eating is to slow down. If you are a fast eater, you are eating under stress. Try to take double the time you normally would to eat your meals.

A macronutrient imbalance One of the telltale symptoms of both a protein deficiency and a fat deficiency is an inability to lose weight. Because we have been taught that all fat is bad, there are a lot of people out there who are fat deficient. Fat is an important component of our sex hormones, our brains and every cell wall in our body. It turns out that research shows we actually need some fat in our diet to be able to lose weight. (No, this does not mean you can go out and eat all the bacon you want!) The quality of the fat is what matters. You need good

quality fat, not more fast food fat or processed food fat. We also gain weight if we eat too many carbohydrates. There is a lot of controversy over how many are too many and how the quality of carbohydrates makes a difference. Carbohydrates can be a whole article by themselves.

A circadian rhythm issue This is a fancy term to say what time you eat your food during the day matters. Study after study has shown that people who eat breakfast either don’t gain as much weight or lose weight easier. Sumo wrestlers eat approximately the same number of calories as top competitive body builders but look very different. Body builders eat small meals all day.

Sumo wrestlers eat all their calories for supper and then go to bed. Are you on the Sumo wrestler diet?

Poor quality food Our bodies need us to eat to provide them with certain nutrients, both macronutrients and micronutrients, that they need to function. If our bodies don’t get those nutrients, they will continue to tell us that they are hungry and it is really hard not to eat when you are hungry. Poor quality food does not contain a lot of nutrients: vitamins, minerals, quality protein, and healthy fats, so we end up eating a lot more food.

The extra food still contains calories so that gets stored as fat.

When we eat good quality, nutrient dense food we don’t need as much to satisfy our body’s nutrient needs.

Stress can contribute to weight gain Continued from previous page

Excessive exercise that you hate We all agree that we understand why couch potatoes can be overweight but why do some people who exercise religiously, for long periods, have problems losing weight? If you are exercising hard enough and hate it enough, you put yourself into a stress response. Stress chemistry increases the amount of cortisol and then insulin in your body. Insulin tells your body to store fat, not to burn it. You then have trouble losing weight.

Slowed down metabolism from too much dieting When you restrict calories too much your body thinks you are on a desert island and that you are starving. It immediately springs into action to save your life by reducing your expenditure of energy. It becomes more efficient. It stops building muscle because that is a very energy and nutrient demanding activity. It slows down fat burning and increases muscle burning for fuel.

When you go back to eating normally again, it takes a while for this process to reverse so you continue to store more fat than you did before you went on a diet. The more you diet (restrict calories), the harder it is to lose weight because of this mechanism.

Unresolved emotional issue Some people may have had an unpleasant experience in their past that they either were too young to deal with or didn’t know how to deal with. Sometimes one of the ways we protect

ourselves from these experiences is by putting on weight. The extra weight actually makes us feel safe even though we may hate ourselves for being overweight. This can be a complex issue that will require professional help.

Older adults may need specialized vaccinations Though vaccines are usually associated with childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations as they age. Even those who received immunizations as youngsters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifically to the over 50 crowd. Seniors are urged to talk to their doctors about certain vaccines. In addition to flu shots, there are vaccinations that can help prevent other illnesses, such as pertussis (whooping cough), shingles, diphtheria/ tetanus, and pneumonia. Shingles is a condition that affects those who had chickenpox as children, and can be quite painful. A vaccination is an easy way to avoid it. Many local pharmacies now offer on-site immunizations, saving people a trip to the doctor’s office.

This cannot be classed as a success. We need a sustainable way to lose weight if we wish to improve our health. This means learning how to eat differently all the time, not just for a short time. In order to continue to eat in a certain way for the rest of your life, you would have to enjoy it. What diet do you know that you would

want to follow for the rest of your life? And yet the way we eat has such a huge influence on our health, it is certainly worth finding a way to eat that we like but that is also good for us.

Remember, we are all unique individuals and what worked for your neighbour or your sister-in-law, may not work for you.

Program provides support during recovery process Substance abuse, be it alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs, is a big problem in the Shuswap.

And, as the new year is a time people often decide to make healthy changes in their lives, the Mental Health and Substance Use office in Salmon Arm has offered extra support for people who are just starting the recovery process. “ They may still have an individual counsellor or be in a 12-step program,” says substance abuse counsellor Jackie Evans.

“It’s really hard to address all this information in individual sessions and certainly 12-step does not cover it.”

An eight-week program began Tuesday, Jan. 14 and has run subsequent Tuesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. It is expected the program will repeat throughout the year.

Meetings cover the nature of addiction, including why some people become addicted while others don’t; withdrawal – symptoms and strategies; treatment – plans, long-term recovery, wellness and support groups; relapse prevention; feelings; behavioural strategies; mental health and recovery and skills to maintain recovery.

“It’s meant to be educational, to provide additional support in order to help people understand the process they are going through and to gain some practical strategies,” says Evans, who will facilitate the course with Chelsea Braby.

“One of the common things is when people who are going through withdrawal become very depressed or anxious,” she says. “ They can’t turn off their thoughts, and sometimes it’s just part of withdrawal. They don’t realize it won’t last.”

Evans says members of the group will learn about brain chemistry and the adjustment process that has to take place when people decide they want to stop using a substance.

“We’re going to offer a lot of strategies and we’re hoping to be able to answer a lot of questions and concerns,” Evans adds, noting it’s not meant to be a counselling group so there are no confidentiality issues. “We’re trying to help people understand as they go through the recovery process and the more knowledge someone has about what they’re going through, the more likely they will be able to manage it better.”

This is the first time the program is being offered in Salmon Arm and individuals are invited to attend one or all the sessions.

Differentiating between colic and acid reflux If infants were born with an instruction manual, early parenting would be much less stressful. Unfortunately for new mothers and fathers, tending to a baby is often a system of trial and error. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for the other. Similarly, a child may be born who is easily comforted and takes to sleep, while its sibling seems to cry all day long. Getting to the root of those crying fits can prove rather challenging.

Colic When crying goes on and on with seemingly no cause, this could be indicative of something more significant than just a fussy baby. Infants use crying as a method for telling their caregivers that something is amiss. Cries can indicate dampness, pain, sleepiness, or other conditions. But crying with no apparent cause is defined as colic.

Colic is not a disease but rather a behavioral condition.

Babies with colic cry for seemingly no reason and very often at the same time each day. Nothing seems to comfort them.

In addition to crying, the child may thrash around or clench fists.

Some believe that colic has its roots in the digestive tract, where there is the presence of lots of air that may stem from slow intestinal motility. Others believe colic is linked to an overstimulated central nervous system. Still, colic is not a diagnosis, but rather a way to describe how a baby is behaving. The colicky behavior may be indicative of another underlying condition, such as acid reflux.

Acid reflux According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, acid reflux affects more than half of all babies under three months old and usually resolves itself between the child’s first and second birthdays.

Acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, muscle remains open and enables stomach contents to flow back up through the esophagus and mouth. Infants have immature muscle development, and their LES may not open and close only when swallowing, enabling food to come back up. The reflux can occur when the baby cries, strains or eats too quickly.

Symptoms may include excessive amounts of spit-up, crying and pain while eating. An infant may drink breast milk or bottles quickly and gulp the liquid down because it is soothing, only to find that this exacerbates the problem.

Infants with reflux may begin to cry when lying down. They may also arch their necks and backs during or after eating or spitting up. Some children have silent reflux, where the acid does not come out of the mouth, but rather the baby swallows it back down. Reflux babies may learn to associate food with pain and can develop aversions to feeding.

Whenever a child is exhibiting signs that go against the norm, parents can talk first to their child’s pediatrician.

Different feeding or sleeping strategies may alleviate some of the crying. Medication or surgery may be needed in extreme cases, and a parent may be instructed to visit a specialist in gastrointestinal conditions for an accurate diagnosis.

Common workout mistakes and how to avoid them Those already a few months into their New Year’s resolution to get fit may find that all the effort at the gym is not paying off as they had expected. Although exercise results vary, certain behaviors could impact just how much weight a person can lose and how efficient their workouts may be.

For those who want to increase the measurable results of their workouts, try to avoid these common mistakes. * Not giving it enough time. Many people want to see immediate results when they begin a new exercise regimen.

While such instant gratification is possible, it’s foolish to expect to wake up and look in the mirror after a week’s time and see a complete body transformation. Many health experts say a safe weight loss goal is one to two pounds each week. For each pound of fat to burn, you need to shed 3,500 calories weekly. Do this by exercising and reducing caloric intake. Don’t give up prematurely. After a few months your clothes may fit better and you can see a change in muscle tone and overall fitness. * Sticking with the same routine. Routines can make it easier to manage everyday life. For example, waking up

and going to bed at the same time each day helps many people maintain the energy they need to live life to the fullest.

But routine is not always a friend with regard to exercise. When you do the same exercise routine over and over, your body becomes acclimated to that routine and your muscles recognize the motion. As a result, your body doesn’t have to work as hard to do the workout. Altering your routine means you’re essentially keeping your body on its proverbial toes. This will help you to burn more calories and even prevent you from getting bored with your workout. * Skipping strength training.

Cardiovascular activities like running on the treadmill can certainly burn calories, but cardiovascular exercise alone is not enough to achieve optimal health. Strength training helps build lean muscle and strengthen bones, so it’s important to make both cardiovascular and strength-training exercises a part of your workout routine. * Maintaining a moderate pace. Not only can open windows boost mood and create an inviting living space, but open windows also can be good for the environment. * Open windows improve indoor air quality. Indoor air pollution has been described by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a primary environmental health problem. Indoor air quality can be up to five times worse than outdoor air. In addition, the American College of Allergists states that 50 percent of all illnesses are caused by polluted indoor air. Because many homes are built to be air-tight to conserve energy and money, unhealthy levels of air pollutants can build up inside homes when windows remain closed. These pollutants may include radon gas, cigarette smoke, chemical fumes from paints and solvents and leached chemicals from modern building and furnishing materials. Opening windows for extended periods of time allows fresh air to spread throughout the home.

Houseplants can also filter indoor air and make it healthier to breathe. * Open windows reduce energy consumption. A cool breeze entering a home through open windows can reduce the temperature inside of a home without having to turn on fans or air conditioners. This not only helps individuals save

Higher-intensity parts of the workout will get your heart pumping and burn calories. * Making unnatural body movements. Movements that mimic the body’s natural movements will be more effective at toning muscles. These movements include bending, stepping, jumping, and running. Unnatural movements may not be practical, and they may increase your risk of injury. * Working out alone. When you workout alone, you do not have the benefit of friendly competition to motivate you as you exercise. With no one to egg you on, you may be content to stick to a certain number of repetitions instead of trying a little harder. A partner can provide camaraderie and help you make the most of your exercise regimen. * Ignoring possible injury. No one is immune to injury, which can result from lifting weights that are too heavy or using improper form. If you feel you are hurt, don’t make things worse by ignoring an injury. The body needs time to recover from injury, and ignoring an injury can lead to additional problems that will only extend that recovery time.

By Dr. Travis Stork (NC) For me, living a healthy lifestyle is about balance and practicing healthy habits in all areas of your life. Small changes can have a big impact in overall body health. Here are five tips for leading a balanced, healthy life: • Reduce your refined sugar intake. Whether it’s in our morning coffee or sandwich bread at lunchtime, sugar is hiding in many of our favorite foods. I always advise people to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits and cut out as much simple sugar as possible – like in pop.

• Do some neurobics. Stimulate your mind and enhance your brain’s performance by changing up your regular routine. Tie your shoes with your eyes closed, take up a new hobby, or hone a new skill.

• Visit your doctor once a year (if advised) and your dentist twice a year for routine checkups; regular checkups with your doctor and dentist can help uncover issues earlier when they are easier to treat.

• Pay attention to your teeth and gums! Oral health is an important part of your overall health, so it’s important to practice a daily oral care routine which includes flossing, brushing for two full minutes twice a day, and rinsing. Only 44 per cent of Canadian adults claim to follow this oral care routine regularly*, and not surprisingly more than half of Canadians suffer from gingivitis. How to protect yourself against stomach ulcers (MS) -- Did you know that a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of 60 to 80 percent of gastric ulcers, and of 80 to 85 percent of duodenal ulcers? The duodenum is the upper end of the small intestine.

Normally, a layer of mucous protects the stomach and the intestine from the acidity of the gastric juice, a liquid secreted by the stomach glands during digestion. Helicobacter pylori weakens this protective layer by penetrating the mucus lining and creating open sores, or ulcers, in the gastrointestinal tract.

In industrialized countries, close to 20 percent of people aged 40 and under are infected with this bacterium, and if affects close to 50 percent of people over the age of 60.

Studies show that 20 percent of these people will develop an ulcer during their lifetime.

Clinical studies have shown that probiotics can be useful in treating infections caused by Helicobacter pylori. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to eliminate Helicobacter pylori, but

unfortunately, the success rate is only 74.8 percent. When a multi-strain probiotic supplement, such as Probaclac, is added, the treatment’s efficiency increases to 83.6 percent.

The fact that antibiotics cause several side effects is important to mention. These adverse effects, experienced by 38.5 percent of patients treated, include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and taste changes. When a multi-strain probiotic supplement is given along with the antibiotics, side effects are reduced and reported by only 24.7 percent of patients.

Jolicoeur recommends Probaclac as the ideal solution since it provides probiotic complexes that are designed specifically for every age group: children up to the age of 15; adults (can be taken from the age of 15); and older adults (age 50 and up).

“Adding a multi-strain probiotic supplement to the medication given to treat ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori significantly increases its efficiency and tolerance,” she said.

Can human growth hormone cheat aging?

Human growth hormone performs a number of biological functions and is in abundance when children and adolescents are growing. But HGH has recently become a coveted cosmetic supplement designed to improve metabolism, fend off weight gain and restore the vigor of youth. The off-label use of HGH has resulted in a multi-billion dollar industry but not without significant controversy.

HGH, also known as somatotropin or somatropin, is a natural substance excreted by the pituitary gland in the brain.

It stimulates growth and cell reproduction and regeneration.

As a person ages, his or her HGH levels decrease. In certain instances, doctors will prescribe HGH to treat children’s growth disorders or deficiencies in adults. However, some patients seek it for improved vitality or as an anabolic agent to improve athletic performance.

Many people view HGH as the fountain of youth because it can help diminish wrinkles and the physical signs of aging while improving energy levels and helping fight depression. But while HGH has its upside, there is still much to be learned about this complicated hormone.

Several small clinical studies have looked at HGH in the injectable form. Many tout the efficacy of the hormone in growing muscles and bone, improving skin, ramping up sexual drive, and helping with weight loss. According to Stuart Weinerman, M.D., Division of Endocrinology at North Shore/Long Island Jewish Hospital, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Hofstra/North Shore LIJ School of Medicine, the

largest review of trials with HGH demonstrate that long-term use of growth hormone caused an average 2.3 kilogram (about 5 lbs) loss of weight, 2.6 kg (5.6 lbs) loss of fat, 1.4 kg (3 lbs) increase in lean body mass and no consistent change in bone density. Patients using HGH tend to feel better, too, as seen in quality of life scores. But these benefits often come at a cost.

One significant disadvantage of HGH injections is that they are very expensive. Over the course of a year, men and women receiving HGH injections can expect to pay thousands of dollars for those injections, particularly if they are not covered by insurance. Injections also can only be given by a licensed medical practitioner, requiring multiple trips to the doctor during the course of therapy.

Another pitfall of injectable HGH is that it is an artificial source of the hormone. When the body becomes accustomed to receiving HGH from an external source, the pituitary gland may decrease the natural production of HGH. Should a person cease therapy, he or she may find that they are now deficient in the hormone.

The Mayo Clinic says that HGH isn’t the magical answer for staving off aging. The organization warns that there is little evidence that taking HGH supplements provides any measurable benefit for healthy individuals and it may actually result in side effects that are unhealthy. These can include carpal tunnel syndrome, swelling in the arms and legs, joint pain, muscle pain, and enlargement of breast tissue in men. HGH also may contribute to conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Freckles are a common skin condition Whether it’s a light smattering of spots over the bridge of a person’s nose or tiny spots covering his or her arms and legs, freckles are a reality for thousands of people. Despite their prevalence, many people are unsure just why freckles form or who is most likely to have them on their bodies.

Freckles are spots on the skin that are produced from concentrations of melanin, which is the pigment in the skin that gives it its color. Freckles generally show up on people who have fair skin. Melanin is derived from the amino acid tyrosine, which helps with protein production in the body.

Melanin is usually a black-brown shade and is produced as a defense against the harmful UV rays of the sun.

In the body, the melanocortin 1 receptor on the MC1R gene helps produce melanin that tans the body. Variants of the MC1R gene will lead to freckles. Melanin is produced in two types:pheomelanin and eumelanin. Individuals who primarily produce pheomelanin tend to have freckles.

Freckles also are largely genetic, and some identical twins may have similar freckle patterns.

There are two basic forms of freckles. These include simple freckles and sunburn freckles. Both are made more prominent by exposure to the sun. Simple freckles are usually small, tan and round. Sunburn freckles are larger, darker and more irregular in shape. You’ll find them usually on the upper back and shoulders. Lentigines is the medical term for darker sunburn freckles that do not tend to fade in the winter.

Freckles, although most common on the face, can occur anywhere on the body that is repeatedly exposed to sun.

While freckles are not harmful and rarely lead to skin cancer, people who have freckles are at a higher risk for other skin conditions, which in turn may increase their risk of skin cancer. That’s because a person with the pheomelanin type of melanin has a lower concentration of photoprotective melanin that guards against the harmful effects of UV radiation. People with freckles tend to burn more easily and need to rely on sunscreen and covering their skin to prevent damage.

Those who are embarrassed by freckles can be diligent about covering up in the sun. There are various topical creams that can bleach freckles and lighten them over time.

There also are dermatological laser treatments to lighten or eliminate freckles.

Freckles are a skin condition primarily for those of light skin who are exposed to sunlight. They are largely hereditary and rarely harmful. Those who have concerns about the appearance of freckles can visit a dermatologist to discuss their options.
