RUTH MASTERS Conservationist

C

hange is inevitable. It’s just not always for the better.

That’s the cautionary outlook of longtime – and legendary – conservationist Ruth Masters who, born and raised in the Comox Valley, has seen many changes over her 93 years here.

“In my lifetime it’s gone from a quiet little village to a teeming city, and all focused on development,” said Masters from the quiet of her kitchen as the Puntledge River flowed nearby.

With her cat and companion of 10 years Babe sleeping contentedly on the table, the diminutive and soft-spoken Masters reflected on the battles she has fought on behalf of the environment, assessed the current situation and cast a wary eye to the future.

She is undecided about the Valley’s current crop of politicians and land developers.

“Sometimes I think they’re smartening up and other times I wish the hell I could get

out of here. They’re a little more conscious of trees. It isn’t just total destruction and wipeout.”

She acknowledges growth is inevitable, but adds, “At least until we crash. Our prosperity can’t go on by leaps and bounds forever.

We’re pushing our resources to the limit.”

Through reading the Victoria Times-Colonist “and the two local rags” Masters keeps her eye on general trends. “I haven’t got anybody that I can go and bitch at specifically,” says the self-proclaimed “senior shit disturber.”

Not surprisingly, she is strictly opposed to the proposed Raven coal mine at Baynes Sound.

“It’s a mistake. Environmentally it’s a loser.

The overall eventual effect is bad.

“Another [proposed] one that really upsets me is Anderson Lake. Imagine the tourists going up to Mount Washington, the pride of the whole area’s resort, and seeing a bunch of dirty coal trucks.”

cycling on local roads. She says cars and cyclists will have to learn to co-exist. “They took my (driver’s) licence away a while back (due to her age). I’ll have to get another bike,” she chuckled.

The two-time Comox Valley Citizen of the Year was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal last year for her lifetime contributions to the community. “I think [the medal] is hanging in my bedroom. I never document these things. I never go looking for them [to come my way].”

A Second World War veteran, Masters is responsible for naming more than 50 peaks and small lakes in Strathcona Provincial Park, often for departed Valley veterans of the two world wars. Fittingly, a lake in Strathcona Park is named in her honour.

Her efforts to protect wildlife and the environment date back to the 1950s and the fight to stop the damming of Buttle Lake in Strathcona Park. It was there a tradition was born that carries Masters chuckles when recalling how she handed out the spoons in

promoting local food throughout the region protecting green space & wildlife for generations to come

“a proper ceremony. I’d make them stand up nice and straight and stick out their chest. I’d give them a whack and say, “You have been spooned!’ “

[because] the government was going to sell it. We rose up and got it stopped.”

While she admits such victories are all too rare, she notes, “Things would be an awful lot worse if we quit bitching. The place would be overwhelmed by every mistake you could make.”

Over the years Masters has handed out some 100 Hero Spoons for people who have done something extraordinary, most recently in July to Lee Murray for rescuing a woman who had slipped beneath the water while tubing on the Puntledge River.

Not one to just “bitch and squawk,” Masters said “I put my property where my big mouth is” when she donated 18 acres bordering the Puntledge River to the Comox Valley Regional District – the Ruth Masters Greenway and Wildlife Corridor.

Masters has been on any number of blockades “trying to halt some of the mistakes. But when there’s a buck to be made we’re brushed aside with the speed of light and whatever the plan was goes ahead.

Her many local campaigns include the creation of parks and promoting preservation at places such as Macdonald Wood Park, Willemar Bluffs, Mack Laing Park and the Courtenay River estuary.

“We have managed to save a few things. The Mallard greenbelt for example. That was a goner at one point. We bitched and squawked

locally grown food and strong family values

A

small lot of land and a dreamthat is what Norm and Jean Sieffert started with when they moved to the Comox Valley in 1958. They worked long, hard hours to grow their farm from only a few acres, selling tomatoes and cucumbers out of their garage, to over 100 acres of mixed vegetables on Knight Rd., in Comox and a potato farm on Tyee Valley Rd., in Merville.

The Sieffert Market, which opened in 1975 runs from May to November each year and is busy throughout the season, showcasing Sieffert’s popular new potatoes and corn.

With 16 rotating greenhouses they also grow their own cucumbers and tomatoes, keeping one greenhouse aside for propagation of fresh lettuce, swiss chard, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.

Jean Sieffert is no longer a part of the day-to-day operations and doesn’t give out advice like she used to, but she is always interested in hearing about what is new on the farm. She loves to be taken on drives back to the land where her roots run so deep and where her family continues to carry on her legacy.

“If it wasn’t for Jean Sieffert and her tenacity this place wouldn’t be what it is today,” says her daughter-in-law, Char Sieffert. “She is the one that always kept this place running. I learned a lot from her!”

Char began working the Sieffert land when she was 18 and quickly realized she was there to stay.

One day she was in the beet patch pulling weeds when Bob approached her to ask what time it was. They hit it off immediately and eventually were married with two children, Alysha and Jennifer.

These days their attention is focused on the fourth generation of Sieffert farmers, their granddaughter, Ryleigh. Not yet one, she keeps busy in much the same way that her mother, Alysha did when she was a young child and work on the farm needed to be done. As Char watches her daughter balance motherhood and farming, she remembers her own years as a young mother.

“There were times early in the spring when I would take the kids to the greenhouse with some toys. They’d play while my mother-in-law and I worked. I’d put them in the middle of a dirt pile with a bucket and a shovel. They’d come home covered in dirt but they’d have a ball. We’d go out transplanting which was a lot of work and the kids would want to help put the plants in the ground.”

This developed a strong work ethic. “Everyone pitched in. It’s what you did,” Char explains. “The girls knew when stuff needed to be done, and they would chip in. They had the ability to make as much money as they wanted because there was never-ending work to be done.”

PUMPKIN PIE

Bob and Char’s daughter, Alysha Sieffert continues to work the farm alongside her husband, Matt. When they married a few years ago, Matt asked if he could take on the Sieffert name. Matt and Alysha hope to continue working the land for generations to come.

Running a farm is a big job. When Bob and Char started to take over the operation after Norm Sieffert passed away in 1999, they knew they could not do it alone. They asked long time employee, Chris Edwards to become a partner. The Siefferts consider Edwards to be one of the family. Their kids call him Uncle Chris. He has been working with them since he was a teenager and is an invaluable member of their team.

Long-term employees are important to their success. Karen Gamble has been at Sieffert’s for 18 years. She works alongside Char managing the day-to-day operations of the market. Mai Trieu came to Sieffert’s 33 years ago. “Mai is part of the family,” says Char. “She is so solid. Without her I don’t know what I’d do.”

In addition to long-term employees, there are many long-time customers who have shopped the market since it opened in the mid-seventies. The operation may be a lot larger, but the principles and work ethic remain unwavering. The Siefferts believe in good old-fashioned farming and continue to use low impact irrigation techniques and crop rotations to ensure the farmland will continue to produce for years to come.

“We like to produce our own food,” smiles Char. “Half of our business is the market and the other half is wholesale. We wholesale corn through the summer and potatoes start in June and if we have a lovely crop, they’ll go right through until February/March.”

Sometimes the work is long and grueling, but for Char Sieffert one of the best times of year is that moment in early spring when you see everything coming up ready to nourish the community for another season.

Recipe Jean Sieffert is well known across the Comox Valley for her wisdom and strong work ethic. Her family also shares many memories that revolve around her hearty home-cooking. A slice of Ma Sieffert’s pumpkin pie is one of their favourites.

The matriarch of Sieffert’s farm turns 90 on October 12th, and though she is no longer a part of the day-to-day operations she always asks about long time staff members and enjoys keeping up to date with stories of the farm she started with her husband so many years ago.

Ma Sieffert’s Pie-Crust

(Will make 2 single shells) 1 1/2 cups flour salt (pinch) 1/2 cup shortening (Crisco) ~ Mix together and add 4 tbsp water. ~

Ma Sieffert’s Pumpkin pie filling

2 eggs 2/3 cup white sugar 1 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp ginger 1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp allspice few grains of salt (optional) 1 1/2 cup prepared pumpkin* 3/4 cup hot milk

Beat eggs only until whites and yolks are well blended.

Gradually beat in ingredients 2-7. stir in pumpkin and milk.

Bake 400 F for 40 mins *Prepared Pumpkin: We find the easiest is to cut medium size pie pumpkin ( which is sweeter) in half and clean out the seeds. Place in baking pan upside down and bake until soft.

350 f for 1/2 to 1 hour depending on pumpkin size. When cooked scoop out pumpkin meat and blend until smooth.

Intersection corners decorated with colourful botanical specimens. Roundabouts, the Valley’s latest introduction to maintaining traffic flow, have provided more opportunities for greening our streets.

With a climate ranging from Zone 8b near the coastal breeze to a colder Zone 7a in the lee of our famous ski hill, gardeners are favoured with a whole selection of wonderful plants for their designing pleasure.

Still others have ingeniously woven food plants in amongst the ornamentals.

Parks are not just about playgrounds anymore, but provide scattered borders along paths dotted with benches meant for quiet moments of contemplation and a chance to admire the beauty within our valley.

Many become urban plant collectors, seduced by the thrill of plants discovered in faraway exotic places — not to mention their beauty. The purchase of just one peony or rhododendron discovered deep in the wilds of eastern Asia creates a thirst for more of the same. These gardeners proudly list their rose or hosta collections in the hundreds.

Food. We would be remiss not to venture further afield in our Valley — to the farms.

Vegetables, dairy, poultry, pigs, cattle, vineyards — and yes, bison and water buffalo.

Make your way outside of the downtown core and you will notice a number of modest gardens beckoning the way to a resident’s front door. Granted a peek around the back gate and you would be surprised at the beauty sequestered there.

Other gardeners have climate change in mind when they designed their elegant gardens around native plants and water conservation.

Many of the pleasing combinations result in organic control of pests and diseases — a better method of growing healthy food.

magine yourself stepping down a rustic stone stairway into an oceanfront garden sheltered by boughs of Sycamore, Cedar and London Plane trees that have grown over generations along the shoreline.

A chandelier hangs in the branches and soft music floats across the garden as you are welcomed with a flute of champagne and a variety of roaming hors d’oeuvres crafted with savoury local ingredients, such as house-smoked, marinated Komo Gway oysters on fresh potato crisps topped with fresh jalapeno and purple scallions.

As you mingle with other guests, servers make their way through the crowd with trays of crisp crostini topped with whipped

Saltspring Island goat’s cheese, organic basil pesto, blackberry honey, red onion jam and house-smoked peppers. It is a mouthwatering start to the evening.

Antipasto platters feature a gorgeous display of seasonal vegetables, such as garlic from Garston Farms, pattypans, beets, carrots and beans from Pattison Farms alongside marinated Natural Pastures Cheese and fresh focaccia dipped in flavourful small-lot Greek olive oil.

The Full Moon Feast, hosted by Kathy Jerritt of Tria Fine Catering, is a spectacular, memorable event that leaves you feeling nourished and satisfied. Guests are adventurous in nature and don’t mind that the menu is not revealed until they arrive at

Filberg Lodge’s lower garden on the evening of the full moon. In fact, Jerritt’s reputation is such that these events are almost always sold out.

“The Full Moon Feasts become that event that allows us to do everything that we want to do through the year,” she exclaims. “To share the very best of the Comox Valley with our guests.”

On this particular night in July 2013, Jerritt has planned her menu around a mead moon which some call a honey moon. This seventh moon of the year celebrates the fertility of the earth, a time when local farms offer an abundance of delicious fruits and vegetables.

To honour the mead harvest Jerritt has infused each course with delicate glazes of Big D’s Honey.

She becomes emotional as she introduces the meal; honoured to have Rob Everson, Chief Councillor of the K’ómoks First Nation, present to provide a traditional welcome to start off the evening.

“This will be one of those meals that we will remember for the rest of the summer,” he says as he toasts the crowd. “Gilakas’la on behalf of my family. Welcome!”

As the toasts come to a close, the servers arrive with fireweed honey glazed, roasted sablefish caught off Haida Gwaii. This decadent starter is floating in a velvety smooth fennel cream, topped with an organic purslane, and dressed with pickled lemon vinaigrette and fresh aioli. The subtle, sweet flavour pairs beautifully with the intense floral aroma of Beaufort Winery’s Qandisa white wine, made from 100% estate-grown siegerrebe grapes.

Just when you think that things can’t possibly get any better, appetizer plates are cleared away to make room for the main course- a slow-roasted, brined chicken leg from Tannadice Farms served on a bed of smoked tomato polenta and sautéed kale served alongside Natural Pastures cheesefilled grape leaves brushed with wildflower honey, that adds panache to an already stunning meal. As Jerritt introduces this dish the crowd murmurs with excitement.

“It is a perfect combination of estate grown grapes, and grapes we bring down overnight from the Okanagan. It has a medium to light body, but the nose… you won’t believe it! It smells like a Cabernet Sauvignon. The first taste is the earthiness of the Foch, and then as it leaves your mouth you get the spiciness of the Shiraz.”

Jeff and Susan Vandermolen of Beaufort Winery are present for the dinner and it is delightful to have them take a few minutes to describe their wines with each course.

To top off the evening, Jerritt serves a delicious, late harvest Cabernet Franc from Gehringer Brothers, spectacular paired with a decadent desert of chocolate filled beignets topped with locally grown, organic raspberries and a honey glaze. It is definitely a meal to remember! Strangers become fast friends as the wine flows and the full moon begins its ascent over Comox Bay.

“I know Kathy has done a beautiful job of creating something to match this wine,” exclaims Susan as she introduces L’Artiste.

“It is all about designing a menu with what is happening in our region at that moment, bringing people into a place where they can Fall 2013

The three core values of Tria are collaboration, thoughtfulness, and integrity. “Our whole philosophy is around collaboration and creating high quality nutritious food that supports local, not just local farms but local businesses,” explains Jerritt.

The Full Moon Feasts provide a venue to showcase the bounty of this community in a way that traditional catering jobs cannot. For instance, Jerritt explains that the Full Moon Feast menu changes right up to the day of the event, which never gets to happen with traditional catering.

“A lot of people are using stainless steel as a fireplace surround and I didn’t want that. I wanted something completely different,” says Jayson. “A friend of mine had some quartz leftover and he cut it up for me. It works great in this room.”

A large open concept kitchen with lots of counter space welcomes guests to gather around and share conversation while the food and music flows. There are12 speakers throughout the house, which is wired for maximum sound and has been synced with the couples phones and iPad through a Control 4 system by Full Spectrum.

The kitchen is a central room in their home. “Groups always end up in the kitchen!” laughs Jayson as he shows off some of his favourite fixtures, such as a wall mount pot filler. Hinged to fold into the wall when not in use this stove-side essential is a convenient and practical tool found in many chef kitchens.

Modern Living A stylishly curved hands-free faucet at the granite sink is extremely handy. This stops the spread of germs but also means less time cleaning and more time entertaining.

Both Jayson and Terri work with new homeowners on a regular basis; Jayson as the Construction Manager for Crown Isle and Terri as the Office Manager for Dave Procter at Re/max. Between them, they have spent countless hours helping others realize their dreams.

Building this house was a chance for these childhood sweethearts who first met in grade seven to realize some of their own dreams.

r e s t a u r a n t Comox Valley lovers of Indian food were disappointed when The Great Escape closed in Cumberland more than a year ago.

leftovers two days later, I discovered vegetables were still crisp in spite of sitting in sauce.

We augmented the main courses with tandoori and garlic naan bread (two of five naan breads on the menu), rice and a side of cool plain yogurt.

Fear not, because Manvirro’s Indian Grill is filling the void nicely. Brothers Tony and Lyal Kandola are operating out of the former Stavros Taverna location in Courtenay.

And that’s the thing about Indian cuisine — you can order mild spicing (as opposed to medium, hot or extra hot), but South Asian dishes are unapologetically spicy.

My dinner companion Rob began with a veggie samosas appie with two appealing dips, tamarind and mint.

The trick is to have things like bread, rice and yogurt handy to give your taste buds and digestive tract something to contrast the heat.

Before I even tasted my mulligatawny soup starter, I was hooked by the pungent curry aroma wafting off it. The full, rich taste of India in that chicken and lentil soup, whose name translates to pepper water, got my Manvirro’s experience off to a grand start.

My lamb vindaloo was the only thing on the menu designated “HOT,” so it was good that I ordered medium spicing.

In the interest of tasting as much as possible for the purpose of a review, we ambitiously ordered the main course.

Owner Jason Uglanica wants people to know that she’s not just talented with Japanese cuisine, but is “a culinary force on all fronts.” To kick off TGFCo they’re hosting an “invitation only” harvest feast in late September. WHITECAPS 40 Knots Winery, Comox ~ (2011) $23.95 “You don’t get much more local than this,” Gregor said as he poured. He acknowledged his bias for the Old World, but only had good things to say about both his visit to the winery and what it’s producing. “They’re doing it right. You could be in the Okanagan, or Sonoma. And it’s only 5 minutes from home.”

Whitecaps is a blend of primarily Comox-grown Pinot Grigio (the Italian content) and Shoenburger. “Even a small amount of Schoenburger gives the wine a ‘fatter’ mouthfeel, with less acidity than a pure Pinot Grigio,” Gregor tells me. “The blend gives it a nice floral lift, and the mouth feel is nice and soft. Not aggressive. But it maintains the freshness of the Pinot Grigio.”

He suggests pairing the Whitecaps with seafood – crabcakes, lighter salmon dishes. “Because of it’s ‘fatty’ quality it’ll even go with a roasted brie,” he says.

“Primitivo is an Italian varietal genetically linked to California’s Zinfandel, without being as loud and boisterous as most of the Zinfandel’s you’ll find.” You can find better bottles for much more money, Gregor says, but at this price, it’s a great value wine to have on hand for informal occasions. “This pairs very well with tomato sauces, with pastas, with chicken parmagianna.

FONTIDO CHIANTI CLASSICO Italy ~ (2008) $33.99

Whereas the Ogio is from Puglia in the south, and is entirely Primitivo, the Fontido hails from Tuscany, and is a classic Chianti – predominantly Sangiovese. It’s also a very different style of wine.

regor Mowatt, Crown Isle’s Director of Operations, is one of my “go to guys” about wine, in part because I share his affection for Old World wines. It was a bit of surprise then that he started our recent wine tasting with a very local bottle: the Whitecaps blend from 40 Knots Winery in Comox. It was the first of three wines we talked about, all with a connection to Italy.

“This is a special wine. It’s got finesse. It asks for a rack of lamb, a veal roast.” Where the Ogio was a relaxed sipper, this commands respect. “It’s got structure, some tannins and can stand some breathing, either in a decanter, in the open bottle or poured in a glass while you’re enjoying the Whitecaps, for example,” Gregor suggests. “It will mellow out with some breathing, and it’s a very food-friendly wine. The proteins in the roast, for example, will appreciate the tannins.” As we head into fall and winter I can imagine sumptuous roast dinners crowned with this wine.

the curiosity and critical eye that served darrell Joan tomkins well as a scientist is now helping her as a photographer.

cience and art may sound like an unlikely duo but Darrell Joan Tomkins was drawn to both for similar reasons.

Even though she’d dabbled in photography for years, family and work obligations prevented her from pursuing her passion. But that changed with an early retirement.

In 2004 she retired as a medical cytogeneticist, trading in her microscope for a digital camera.

“My husband was on a sabbatical and we lived in Portland, Ore., for a while,” she says. “All of a sudden I didn’t have anything to do so I enrolled in the Pacific Northwest College of Art.”

“After 30 years it was time to look through a different type of lens,” the 65-year old explains. “But both fields involve shapes and colours, which have always fascinated me. When I was a little girl I had a microscope and ran around looking at everything.”

Before moving to the Comox Valley in 2006, Tomkins was a full professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she taught on the medical faculty and supervised postand undergrad students. She was also the director for two provincial health diagnostic laboratories involved in cancer and cytogenetic (the study of chromosomes) research.

When she moved to the Comox Valley two years later, it was for the scenery and active lifestyle as well as the opportunity to study fine arts at North Island College.

Tomkins hikes, bikes, canoes, snowshoes and practises yoga. At age 50 she took up mountain climbing and has scaled peaks in Canada, the U.S. and Switzerland.

When interviewed for this story, she’d just returned from the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts at Pearson College and was getting ready for a four-day backpacking trip to Della Falls.

So it’s no surprise that compelling aspects of the landscape are the primary theme of Tomkins’ photographs. Her work has been published in Images & Echoes: Exploring Life with Photographs and Writing by Ronna Jevne and exhibited in Oregon and locally at the Muir and Pearl Ellis art galleries, as well as the Comox Valley Camera Club’s Imagefest at the Sid Williams Theatre.

Tomkins is currently preparing a series of photographs for a major show at the Pearl Ellis Gallery in 2015.

“As a scientist I analyzed patterns and details and in the beginning that’s what my photography emphasized,” she says. “Now, I’m exploring the underlying essence or secret of these patterns. My work is becoming more conceptual, abstract and erotic.”

Local Destinations Jean (Fairburn) and Bob Newson built the large rambling farmhouse in 1951, around the same time Mack Laing built his second home, Shakesides, on the property next door. Jean grew up in the Lorne Hotel, the oldest of 6 Fairburn children. She married Bob Newson, a fisherman who at the time worked as a caretaker at Goose Spit. The first home that Bob and Jean lived in was a small cabin that Bob had built on the beach at Goose Spit- not much more than a wooden shed which they called Stagger Inn. When their son, George was born in 1951, they moved this cabin across the bay onto the large, rambling property that Jean’s father had “purchased” years earlier.

Some say that Mr. Fairburn bought the property fair and square while others claim that it came from a bar bill).

f you are looking for a magical venue for an intimate wedding or yearning for a weekend of yoga, friendship and nourishing food you do not have to travel far from home.

Just before Balmoral Ave. turns into Hawkins Rd., leading you to the long stretch of beach known as Goose Spit, there is a long gravel driveway tucked in the forest between Brooklyn Creek and Macdonald Wood.

Nestled at the edge of this mystical forest, which rises majestically along the shores of Comox Bay, bordered by Mack Laing Nature Park, Brooklyn Creek, and Macdonald Wood Park, there is an abundance of nature trails surrounding the oceanfront Newson home.

For years, the Newson family home did not have electricity or running water. It was a rustic home in the forest in an era that required resilience and a strong work ethic to make ends meet.

When George brought Kella to the property in the 1970’s, she remembers it being overgrown with old cars and blackberry bushes spread across the carport. “I’ve been here for 37 years,” says Kella wistfully. “All four of our kids were raised here. When I arrived, it was a jungle, but I stood on the roof of the shed one day and saw the outline of a yard which inspired me to start carving out the landscape.”

The manicured lawn is bordered by a gorgeous collection of old variety dahlias that George and his uncle, Doug Newson Sr., had planted years earlier.

“When I take them to the fall fair they win prizes every time,” Kella says.

As you walk the trails along the shoreline, you will find bits of broken shell, known as midden, crushed into the ground, reminders that this land was once a First Nations fishing village, with a harvest that stretched across Comox Bay.

The property is rich in vegetation. Trilliums poke up amongst the ferns. Lilies and violets grow wild on the forest floor. Apple trees, a walnut tree, and an abundance of blackberries provide a rich harvest for family dinners.

The Newson residence is rich in Comox Valley history and the land has been passed down their family for three generations.

Kella’s youngest daughter, Diana Newson, has always loved planning events and from a very young age spent hours arranging the

“The experience evolves naturally with the energy that is created with a small group of women that come together with the intention of retreating and letting go,” says Diana.

“You mix the nature and the property and everybody together and it evolves into a very magical group. The biggest feedback from our last retreat was that it wasn’t long enough,” she smiles. “Everyone enjoyed themselves so much!”

“The yoga retreat is really cool,” says Kella.

“The girls enjoy yoga on the dock, go on nature walks, and eat really nice organic meals. We bring out all the best linens, china, crystal and silverware and make it as special as we can. It goes from really fine dining to a campfire on the beach roasting marshmallows.” details of magical birthday parties along the shore with her childhood friends.

This passion grew as she moved to the mainland to attend The Art Institute of Vancouver, completing a Diploma in Event Management. Returning to her family home, she dreamed of ways to share the treasures of this property with a wider community, which led to a mother-daughter collaboration that has been hugely successful. Original Newson Events (www.originalnewsonevents.com) is a wedding venue and event planning service run from their Comox property.

“The cool thing about the weddings is that many are kids who grew up with my kids and they want to come back to Comox and have their special day in a place that holds memories,” says Kella.

“It is really cool to have the ability to share something so meaningful to our family with its history, with others,” says Diana. “We are thrilled to have people come and start their own family history here.”

Though they can accommodate up to 150 guests, they prefer small, intimate gatherings.

One of their favourites was a simple yet elegant apple blossom wedding. “It was a lot of fun and really special,” says Kella. “The couple served cupcakes and apple juice. The apple orchard was in full blossom. It was really simple and really nice.”

Keeping things simple and maintaining a sense of intimacy and connection is an important part of the Newson business philosophy.

Whether they are planning a wedding or a yoga retreat they are very intentional about creating a beautiful experience that their guests will remember for years to come.

The first Mocean Yoga Goddess Retreat (www. moceanyoga.com) was held on the Newson property in July 2013, led by Diana and her sister Susie Newson who is an accomplished Yoga instructor with over 1000 hours of yoga training. Riding on the success of a retreat they held in Maui in April 2013, the sisters have been busy booking dates for future retreats to keep up with the great response they have had from participants.

After hosting the 2nd Goddess-inspired weekend on their Comox property in midSeptember they will be heading to Maui Nov. 16-23, 2013 to enjoy the sunshine and crashing waves of the North Shore. Plans for Comox Valley retreats in the summer of 2014 are in full swing. These events book up quickly. In order to maintain the intimacy of the retreats, space is limited to 12 participants.

Diana’s creative spirit comes out in her meal planning. “I like to invent and create as I go, so I can’t even say how I plan my menus. I like to eat clean and organically so I’ll soak beans, use as much local as possible- the less ingredients the better! At the last retreat we cooked a fish that my mom caught in Haida Gwaii. My mom caught it and I cooked it. It was great!”

Asked what she hopes participants will remember most about the retreats, Diana says that she hopes that throughout the weekend the women feel like a goddess.

“I want them to be able to bliss out, relax, and turn off. When we planned our first retreat, I had just come back from Nicaragua. It was one of my favourite vacations because I wasn’t commuting. I didn’t have car keys or a cell phone. The ability to turn off, and tune in my surroundings was very special, and this is what I want our guests to experience.”

TIBET CHINA extravagant yak partners with Comox Valley photographer

It was a chance meeting, a blessing of good timing, a lesson in sharing your dreams.

I was developing a vision of how I could add meaningful travel to my photography career, while continuing to run my business, McKinnon Photography, and raise my family.

In the winter of 2011, I mentioned this desire to a close friend. It was the second person I told.

“We were in a local coffee shop and he pointed across the room and said to me, ‘There is the person you need to meet.’

That was Jim Hamp, who was hammering away at some computer work in the corner.

Hamp, a Comox Valley native, has been living in Chengdu, China with his family for 10 years doing NGO (non-government organization) work supporting the needs of underprivileged Tibetans.

When we met, Hamp and his business partner were thick into laying a foundation for their business, Extravagant Yak Travel Company, which provides personally crafted tours in Tibet. A specific tour they were excited about was the fusion of travel and photography.

Hamp explained, “With world-renowned epic landscapes, rich culture and photogenic people, Tibet is an inspiring place for any photographer. But we wanted to offer more than ‘photography with travel in Tibet,’ as good as that is.

“We wanted to provide an on-the-road learning opportunity with a professional personal instructor. And we wanted it to work both for photo-course addicts with years of experience and someone who is ready to take their camera off the auto settings.”

“The only thing that was missing was the right photographer,” said Hamp, “And we found her that day in a Comox Valley coffee shop.”

The introduction led to a long coffee, followed by more meetings, then impassioned e-mails upon Hamp’s return to Chengdu.

“We were both excited about the possibility of this partnership, but we were also cautious about letting a dream run ahead of a reality that consisted of a thousand variables!” said Hamp.

“As we kept up our correspondence over the next year and a half, the sense of a dream merging with reality took shape. It culminated with inviting Karen to join us on a 10 day introductory trip to western China and Tibet. We both knew that this trip would confirm whether or not this was meant to be,” added Hamp.

In mid-May, I packed up my camera gear and hopped on the plane, full of optimism.

As it turned out, Extravagant Yak and I found we are a perfect fit.

I landed on the ground in Chengdu, China and after two days of touring the city with cameras in hand, and seven days in Eastern Tibet, it was obvious that, with my photography teaching skills and Hamp and his partners’ knowledge, we could create an incredible, unique experience for travellers.

The area has so much to offer. But without the appropriate guide, you would miss so much. We are travelling in an area that has no English, and into small communities that would be hard for the average tourist to get to.

Hamp and his partners, one who is from Lhasa, are fluent in the languages of the area and have a deep understanding and respect for the culture. This really opened the door for me to connect with the people I met, and ensured I was set up for optimal photography.

“The unique tour requires a photographer with a contagious sense of wonder about the world and a large capacity to laugh at the differences that this part of world has with the West,” said Hamp.

Extravagant Yak’s photography tour starts travellers in Chengdu, with visits to the panda breeding and research base, the Sichuan Opera and other local highlights.

After two nights, the group will fly to Shangra-La, Tibet where they will begin their experience of Tibet.

With a maximum of 10 participants, it is a very personalized experience and the optimal way to travel.

he thought of falling was at the front of my mind as I walked toward the Comox boat launch.

At least it was a warm summer day.

And I was in good hands.

Stuart Robinson, whose family owns Compass Adventure in Comox, was pretty much the best teacher I could hope for as I geared myself up to try the increasingly popular water sport known as standup paddleboarding (SUP).

Robinson has placed in the top three in the biggest SUP races in the world and, last fall, he paddled all the way from Departure Bay in Nanaimo to Jericho Beach in Vancouver — a distance of 67 kilometres — in an impressive seven hours.

Now, I’m not a water-phobic person. But the thought of awkwardly flopping off the board, in front of the various boaters in the Comox Harbour and the nearby kids learning to sail small catamarans with Compass Adventure, plus our photographer Erin Haluschak snapping photos to document my progress — well, it was a little bit intimidating.

“People are latching onto it because it’s such a cool feeling to be standing on the water, you know, it’s empowering. And you can do it anywhere, like on a lake or in the interior, it doesn’t have to be near the ocean.”

one with a pull cord to inflate so it wouldn’t be bulky as I tried to keep my balance.

My first few minutes on the water were somewhat painful. Though I had been concerned about hopping up from my knees to my feet, that was actually quite easy. But, once I stood, my feet quickly started cramping up with the strain of trying to avoid tipping the board. I think my legs were visibly shaking because Robinson suggested I ‘relax’ a bit.

SUP yoga is becoming a new trend.

I would describe the SUP experience as a cross between kayaking and surfing.

According to Robinson, SUP has roots dating back to ancient Polynesia, where people would stand in their canoes.

As soon as I focused on loosening my feet and legs and decided to ‘stand’ on the board rather than ‘clench’ on the board, it was much easier.

One of the main things I took away from the experience was that anyone can SUP.

Back on land, Robinson explained why SUP is the fastest-growing sport in the world.

“I’ve taught kids from five years old or younger, all the way up to 75-year-old women who are not in the best health, and they did fantastic as well,” said Robinson, as he told me I did well for my first attempt, and pointed out I didn’t even fall in.

“It’s got so many different facets to it. There’s flat-water paddling, there’s river paddling, there’s surfing, there’s expeditions, basically anything you can think of to do.

exotic locales

For Dylan Bams, the 8,300-km journey from Fanny Bay, B.C. to Kazan, Russia began when he first stepped onto a soccer field in the Comox Valley.

A highlight of the July 5-17 Games came when Canada faced Russia in front of nearly 10,000 people. “Needless to say, it was the greatest footballing moment of my life. We were not only playing the host country in a packed stadium, but were playing them in the quarter-finals of a major international tournament,” the 23-year-old attacking central midfielder said.

Bams is just back from the FISU Games in Kazan, where he helped the Canadian men’s team to a highly respectable seventh-place finish at the International University Sports Federation (FISU)

Russia knocked Canada out of the championship side of the tourney with a 4-1 win, but it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment Bams will treasure forever.

“I had no shame though walking off the field. I’ve cried after losing big games in the past, but after losing the biggest one of my career I held my head high. What a way to go out, in front of a packed house, against a team composed of all professional players, in a stadium where you couldn’t hear your teammate yelling at you from three feet away because it was so loud.

“And to do it for my country, to be wearing the red and white, was something I will forever remember and am extremely proud of.”

The six-foot Bams earned a spot on Canada’s 18-man roster from more than 100 CIS and NCAA players. He was one of three B.C. players on the squad.

A product of the Comox Valley United Soccer program, Bams played house league as a youngster and later with rep teams. At 14, he played for Nanaimo’s Upper Island Gunners in the B.C. Select League. In high school, he helped the 2008 G.P Vanier team to an Island championship and a berth at the provincial tournament.

During a stellar five-year stint with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues he

}

was a four-time provincial all-star, twice named to the first team.

Last year, along with being named U of T men’s soccer MVP, he was awarded the university’s Silver T, given to outstanding graduating student-athletes.

Bams’ goal is to play professional soccer, and he notes the exposure he got in Russia – playing against the best athletes in the world under the scrutiny of the sport’s top scouts – might open that door for him.

Living in Toronto and playing in the Ontario Soccer League, Bams has one more semester of school before obtaining his Bachelor of Physical Education & Health degree in December.

“As far as pro aspirations go, I am currently in talks with a few people who have connections in Europe. It’s always going to be a long shot for a 23-year-old Canadian kid without any pro experience to make it, but it’s a shot I feel is worth taking.

“I am putting a video together and sending that out and if all goes to plan somebody will like what they see and give me a trial. Until then I am going to continue to grind ... hit the gym, continue my interval workouts and try to become a better soccer player every time I step on a field.”

I’ve been talking about signing up for the Perseverance Trail Run but its time to stop talking and register. So today I went online and committed myself. Next step is to start training. I’ll be honest- I’m way better at making a training plan than I am at sticking to it. When I ran a half marathon two years ago, I skipped a few training dates on my way to the run and paid for it with a bum knee and sore feet, which means now I’m twenty pounds heavier than I should be and have barely run more than a few miles at a time since. Maybe I should set lower goals, start off with a shorter or an easier run, but I’m looking for a challenge and this run promises to be that! (Now I just need to find some friends willing to push me up those hills!)

It’s less than two weeks before I officially start my training and I know I have some work to do. I set my alarm for 6:15 this morning so I’d have lots of time to stretch before meeting my friend Jan for a morning run. It’s always easier running with a friend!

We ran along Lazo Rd, past Point Holmes beach. As we rounded the bend to Knight road past farmland and the airfield, I started to feel like I could run for miles. Then my calf started twitching! Then the twitching turned to a tight hard ball. I had to stop and walk it out before continuing our run. We slowed down our pace but it didn’t stop hurting. I’m scared of injuring myself before I even get started. This is an important reminder to stretch out my tired muscles before putting them to work.

Time to hit the trails for a practice run. I printed the map off the website and drove out to Cumberland with one of my longest and dearest friends. Skye has been on these trails before and was more than willing to carry the map and help navigate our way through the Cumberland Forest. I can see how easy it would be to get lost! We asked a couple mountain bikers to direct us to the Two & a Juice trail. Not long after, we were standing on the edge of the forest again, this time looking for the Broadway trail.

The same mountain bikers rode around the corner, took one look at us staring at our map and laughed, “your lost again!” They directed us to the correct trail which was only a hundred metres away but easy to miss. We were thankful for their help. There is definitely a strong sense of community on these trails and it was great to see so many out on their mountain bikes. On the way back to the parking lot Skye pulled a couple homemade power bars out of her backpack.

After trekking for over an hour through the forest this was a well-deserved treat!

august 21st , 2013 I really want to succeed in this run but not sure if my calves will let me persevere. I made an appointment with my physiotherapist, Tannis Harrison at Ascent Physiotherapy in Comox. I think she knows I’m guilty of skimping on my stretches but she showed me a few new ones and worked on my tired calf muscles. After demonstrating a few exercises to add to my daily routine, she recommended I find a good yoga class to help with my strength and flexibility.

Tomorrow I’m heading to see my family doctor to get a referral for massage therapy.

I’ve heard this run is very technical and I want to be prepared!

I’m now officially in my first week of the ten-week training plan which I printed off the Perseverence Run website, and I’m looking forward to registering in a training clinic to keep me motivated. I am excited to spend time training in the Cumberland Forest. There is something so invigorating about climbing these trails. I don’t know if it’s the meditative plodding of my run or the ambiance of the forest or both but after 20 minutes running I am grinning like a little kid. The worries that usually weigh me down seem so much smaller on these trails. While I wait for the training clinic to start, I asked Sarah Seeds of ELM what she thought was the most important training advice to consider.

She stressed the importance of following a structured training program to reach race goals while avoiding injury.

top 3 training tips: 1. Build your base. The Perseverance Trail Run is 10.5kms in length, but will take you longer than your usual 10k time on the road. Be sure to build up your endurance gradually by including weekly long steady runs that increase by 5-10 minutes per week. Work up to running for 1.25 to 1.5hours and you will have a great base to build your strength on.

2. Tackle technical trails. Trail running requires different skills than road running including balance, agility and quick reaction time. Move the majority of your training runs off the road and into the trails to increase your comfort with these skills. If you are new to trail running, begin with wide-open paths and gradually progress to technical trails that are home to roots, rocks, water, gravel etc.

3. Head for the hills. Once you have a solid base under your sneakers it is time to add weekly hill workouts to your training plan. Including 6-8 weeks of hill workouts leading up to the race will increase your leg strength and hill climbing stamina dramatically. Begin with 4-6 shorter hill repeats of 60-90 seconds and build up to 6-8 over a period of weeks. More advanced hill training then moves to longer endurance hill runs lasting from 5-20 minutes.

“Summer sales warm up the Valley’s housing market,” that was the headline.

July sales were 12% above last July sales, August figures aren’t out yet but they will exceed last August. With that prediction goes the warning that last August sales were awful, so it’s not difficult to beat.

Pre 2008 the sell to list ratio, which is the comparison of sales that year in relation to listings taken for the same period, was in excess of 60% and sometimes 70%. In 2008 it dropped to 47% and has hovered close to that, including this year so far at 48.7%

The crystal ball has not shown anything that we haven’t seen for the past six years.

Our market peaked in two places; activity wise we peaked in 2007 with 1054 single family residential sales and it peaked in 2008 price wise, at $354,307 in price.

Between 2004 and 2007 we typically sold 900 to 1000 single family residential homes and 450 plus condominiums, whether they be apartments, townhouses or patio homes.

Then came 2008 and the U.S. housing crisis.

Since then single family sales have dropped to 700 home sales and condos to the 250280 unit sales.

The average price peaked in 2008 at $354,307, it fell dramatically in 2009 to $336,541 and then rebounded a bit to $347,298 in 2012, currently year to date, the average sale price is $340,222.

Don Bardonnex, chief of the Courtenay Fire Department, says his favourite band is Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Comox Fire Department chief Gord Schreiner’s favourite genre of music is old time rock and roll.

Cumberland fire chief Mike Williamson likes all types of music. He loves to sit alone and just have music playing.

He used to have every CSN and CSNY record in his collection before the advent of the electronic age.

His favourite band is the Guess Who.

One of his favourite albums is the Fleetwood Mac classic, Rumours. He also enjoys the solo work of Fleetwood Mac vocalist Stevie Nicks. Canadian band Nickelback is another favourite, along with the Black Crowes, Norah Jones and John Mayer. Of the latter, he likes Waiting on the World to Change and Gravity.

Courtenay Fire Department

“I had everything,” said Bardonnex, also a fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival. “You name it, from about ‘65 up, I had it all to the mid-80s. All on vinyl.”

Bardonnex was planning to attend a Crosby, Stills and Nash concert in Barrie, Ont. around 1990, but the show was shut down because of severe weather.

Seemed fate wasn’t on his side when it came to seeing his favourite rockers up close and personal. David Crosby headlined Vancouver Island MusicFest in 2011, but Bardonnex didn’t find out until after the fact.

Comox Fire Department

“I grew up with them and they are Canadian,” said Schreiner, named National Fire Chief of the Year in 2010 by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs. “I have even seen them in concert once a long time ago.”

That was sometime in the mid-1970s in Vancouver at the Pacific Coliseum, around the time Schreiner joined the fire service.

His favourite Guess Who tunes are Runnin’ back to Saskatoon and Rain Dance.
