DID YOU KNOW? B.C. timber baron J.O. Trethewey and his brothers, owners of Abbotsford Lumber Company, built an incline railroad to bring logs down from the top of Sumas Mountain. The weight of the cars coming down pulled the empty cars back up to the logging site. The loaded cars were transported to the mill on Mill Lake for processing and timber was exported for projects such as the Wellend Canal in Ontario.

Coast-to-coast tour stops in Abbotsford Canadian pop rockers Hedley are bringing their electro-infused anthems to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on April 12 as part of their coast-to-coast Wild Live Tour.

The band will be performing more than 30 shows across the country to promote their fifth studio album, Wild Life, and will be joined by special guests Classified and USS. Lead vocalist Jacob Hoggard, originally from Abbotsford, says it doesn’t matter if they are performing on the JUNO stage or at a small town venue, they approach it with the same sincerity.

“Performing for us is being who we are onstage and letting ourselves come out naturally, and I think that makes a big difference,” says Hoggard.

“We can laugh, have fun and be really passionate about the music.”

Hedley’s ever-changing sounds continue to be reciprocated by audiences, proven by their four consecutive multi-platinum albums Hedley (2005), Famous Last Words (2007), The Show

Must Go (2009), and Storms (2011).

Hoggard explains that the “musical evolution” of the band is more prominent than ever with the fifth album, which includes their fastest selling single “Anything.”

We can laugh, have fun and be really passionate about the music.

“For us that evolutionary process of learning involves a lot of experimenting, trying new things, and that’s why it’s almost an imperative that our album sounds different as we progress through our journey as song writers,” says Hoggard. “I would be devastated if

I made a record that sounded like the last one I made.”

Leading up to the release of each single, Hoggard finds himself in a state of “pure anxiety,” and often second guesses whether the fans will positively receive the new music.

So far, Wild Life has been nothing short of a smashing success.

“The other night I had a really awesome experience when I went backstage to get a drink of water and the crowd was stomping on the ground so it sounded like thunder and they were cheering the bands’ name,” says Hoggard. “I was standing by myself in the dark and I shut my eyes, and it felt almost fake, like how a dream would feel … and I said to myself out loud, ‘You’re not dreaming.’”

According to the Canadian Medical Association, 75% of illness is related to lifestyle, community livability and access to health care.

In Abbotsford, we are trying to improve our knowledge about lifestyles and health care access, and how the community affects our health. The Fraser Health Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority are working to change that with the My Health My Community survey (www.myhealthmycommunity.org).

Abbotsford has a proven history of promoting healthy lifestyles through the Healthy Abbotsford partnership, including making ‘the healthy choice the easy choice’ for children and families through shar-

ing and supporting the Live 5210 message (www.live5210.ca).

The My Health My Community Survey can further enhance this work by improving our understanding of the conditions in which families live, including how safe residents feel walking in their neighbourhood or if they can afford to put healthy food on the table. This information can also be used in other planning processes such as the upcoming Official Community Plan update. A community designed with health in mind creates vibrant and livable spaces for all.

3. CARRY THE ESSENTIALS: Extra clothes, always, no exceptions (rain wear, fleece jacket, toque even in summer). A light with extra batteries (headlamps work great), and a first aid kit with the basics, including something for blisters. Food and water – minimum 1 litre per person with extra energy foods. Bring along shelter, emergency bivy sack, reflective blanket or even an orange plastic bag, a signal device (whistle or flare), pocket knife and hiking poles.

Spring is in the air and thoughts turn to getting outside. We are surrounded with amazing hiking in the Fraser Valley. But how can we hike safely?

Here are a few tips to have fun and be safe!

1. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING Have a map and a compass or GPS. If you have a GPS, know how to use it and have extra batteries. Communications can be limited. Don’t rely on your cell phone but bring it with a full charge.

2. TAKE A FRIEND.

If you are new to hiking, go with others. Share your experiences with others and see what others see.

Months later you will want to remember how long the trail took and what information you need for next time.

I am not trying to be evasive or guard some state secret; it really does depend.

It depends on the region, sub-region, vintage, grape variety, producer, age of the vines, and so on.

That’s not to say there aren’t some general guidelines, because there are.

A vintage chart is one of the tools that can help you with a broad overview.

But better yet, especially here in B.C., just contact the Okanagan or Fraser Valley winemakers about their products and ask them. They’ll tell you.
