Daubers dormant as Minoru Place axes unlicensed game

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Daubers have disappeared from Minoru Place Activity Centre following the cancellation of an unlicensed bingo

game, ruffling feathers of some players.

The Minoru Seniors Society, which operates the centre, found attendance had dropped 83 per cent in the last five years, costing the society money instead of netting it a jackpot.

The last bingo numbers were scheduled to be called mid-summer, but the society shut the game down last week on advice from the province’s gaming authorities, as the centre didn’t hold a valid gaming licence.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend

confirmed B.C.’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch forced the centre to shut the game down immediately after it learned the bingo game was unlicensed. He said the centre had previously been exempt, but gaming regulations had changed.

Townsend also noted the society performed a lengthy review and deemed bingo didn’t justify the time and space in the busy centre, given low participation rates and demand for other programming.

Federal parties organize on shifting landscape As next federal election looms, major political parties paving way for candidates in new ridings

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Federal parties are beginning to mobilize their ground forces in Richmond ahead of an election that’s bringing major boundary changes to local ridings.

An estimated 500 Liberals gathered at Kwantlen Polytechnic University Tuesday for the founding meeting of the party’s riding association in Steveston-Richmond East— a riding without an incumbent.

The new riding is being formed from the current Delta-Richmond East, whose MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay is seeking the Conservative nomination in the new riding of Delta.

Shaun Govender, executive director of the Liberal Party of Canada in B.C., said this week’s turnout was higher than expected.

“People are very energized around the Liberal party and Justin Trudeau right now,” he said.

the 2015 election. The Liberals’ annual general meeting there drew nearly 200 people, according to Govender.

“What we’re seeing in Richmond

is echoed across the province. In places where we would have had four or five people in a room for an AGM, there were 50,” he said. “It’s a pretty positive swing in momentum

for us right now.”

At least six people have expressed interest in running for the party in Steveston-Richmond East, and another five are mulling a run in Rich-

mond Centre. Liberal insiders are considering that a coup for a party that finished over 17,000 votes back of the Conservatives in each of the local ridings.

Potential candidates are now starting to organize and signing up members in advance of a nomination meeting that could take place this fall or next spring.

In 2012 Liberal leader Justin Trudeau launched his leadership campaign in the west in Richmond, and has since made several public appearances here, including at last month’s Chinese New Year countdown at Aberdeen Centre.

Leaders of other federal parties have also taken notice of the Island City. Last week Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a stop in the new Steveston riding, and last month NDP leader Thomas Mulcair made his first Richmond appearance at a public event at Kwantlen.

The Conservatives formed their riding association in Steveston-Richmond East in December. President Eric Sykes said members are sorry to lose Findlay, but said there’s nonetheless optimism among Conservative ranks.

A few would-be candidates have expressed “a lot” of interest in contesting the nomination, said Sykes.

“We’re working on growing the membership and we’re working on raising money, and we’re beating the drum looking for prospective Conservative candidates,” he said.

Once Upon a Time draws tourists to Steveston From Page 1 Lewis is one of a growing number of tourists drawn to Richmond for more than its salmon and strawberries. Staff at the Tourism Richmond Visitor Centre in the Steveston Museum are seeing film tourism firsthand: it recorded over 50 visitors to the centre in January who said Once Upon a Time was the central reason for visiting Steveston.

“Steveston is nice because it’s not in the city,” said Lewis, a medical transcriptionist. “I can be in Steveston and just enjoy the small town—the candy shop the ice cream shop— the little shops on what I call main street.”

Drawn to the show for its messages of hope and true love, Lewis began her TV travels on a suggestion from family.

“I’m a huge TV show fan, huge movie buff,” she said. “I just started researching and I found out that Steveston was the set for Storybrooke, and thought it was really cool.”

In town this week, Lewis didn’t spy any filming—the show was apparently shooting in Lynn Canyon, a private residence and in studio—but she has before. Stars she’s met include Josh Dallas (Prince Charming), Jared Gilmore (Henry Mills) and Alan Dale (King George). The wait to meet stars can be long, but can pay off.

She met Dallas on her first visit.

“I had actually bought a birthday card for myself to try and get autographed, figuring that would be more of a draw than some random piece of hotel paper,” she said.

“We had this two-minute conversation and photograph and everything. It was really, really neat.”

To meet Dale, Lewis relied on her Canadian charm, asking with a photo in the politest way possible.

“The cast and the crew are really appreciative of their Canadian fans because we know

how to play polite and we know how to respect boundaries.”

Lewis knows all the Storybrooke hotspots—the Storybrooke Coffee Co. (Steveston Coffee Company), Granny’s Diner (The Cannery Cafe) and Storybrooke Country Bread (formerly known as Romania Country Bread). Now it’s the people, and the proximity to Vancouver, that keeps her coming back to Steveston.

One local merchant happy to see fans is Shirley Hartwell, owner of the Steveston Candy Dish. Her Moncton Street store isn’t featured in the show—her building is too new—but she’s riding the wave of interest nonetheless. She offers fans a brochure featuring a self-guided walking tour of Storybrooke for a $2 donation to the food bank.

She’s raised $1,500 so far.

Hartwell also sells plenty of sweet souvenirs, from Snow White Fudge to the Prince

Charming Chocolate Sword to the Evil Queen Apple. Fans—”Oncers” as they’re called—come from all over the world, she said.

“I had two girls in here yesterday who were completely dressed in Once Upon a Time stuff, and they’re from L.A.,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what time of year it is. They’re coming hoping to see them filming but they generally don’t. They’re just excited to be in town and see where things are.”

The Tourism Richmond Visitor Centre sells a range of their own souvenirs—T-shirts, buttons, ball caps, bags, magnets—having brokered an exclusive deal to use the “Welcome to Storybrooke” logo. Director of communications Michelle Dunn said centre staff regularly see tourists from around the world, including recent mother-daughter fans from Puerto Rico who said the fantasy show was the reason for their visit.

McKim Way and increased its size to from 800 to 3,000-squarefeet. The original Richmond office opened in 2006, but volunteers felt that the space was getting too small for their fleet.

Politicians including Richmond MP Alice Wong, Mayor Malcolm Brodie and city councilors Derek Dang, Chak Au and Bill McNulty helped cut the red silk ribbon, declaring the opening of the new Tzu Chi’s new location.

In 2013 the service had thousands of volunteers in Greater Vancouver, and their efforts have improved the lives of countless people. “Anytime there is a any kind of disaster, you can count on the Tzu Chi organization to be of great assistance,�

Brodie said.

All money raised by the foundation goes back into the community and helps support the city.

Locally, volunteers supply edibles to the food bank, help seniors in assisted living, offer educational courses in their facility and have donated over $170,000 to Richmond General Hospital. Globally, volunteers aid the remains and survivors after natural disasters.

The program’s missions include: charity, medicine, education, culture, environmental protection, international relief, community volunteer service and bone marrow donation.

Originating 48 years ago in Taiwan, the foundation has since expanded to 47 countries with 372 offices worldwide. Tzu Chi established it’s first Canadian branch in 1992, there are now branches in Toronto, Calgary, Mississauga and Montreal.

Newspapers ramp up recycle fee battle Industry urges province to reconsider MMBC system

by Daniel Palmer Black Press Imminent changes to B.C. recycling rules could financially cripple local newspapers, says the president of the B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association.

Front-end recycling fees will soon be applied to businesses that produce packaging and printed paper, a move that will cost newspapers $6 million across the province, said Hugh Nicholson, B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association director.

“Newspapers are kind of the unique product in all this,” said Nicholson, a Nanaimo-based publisher with Glacier Media.

“We’re not packaging, like Styrofoam or plastics … and we shouldn’t be lumped in with

They are now being pushed out of a place that they have called home twice a week for many years.”

On May 19, industrial stewardship group Multi Material B.C. will assume responsibility for curbside collection and processing of containers and printed paper.

MMBC is requesting 20 cents per kilogram to recycle newsprint, while similar services in Ontario cost less than one cent per kilogram.

MMBC managing director Allen Langdon said the fees fully finance the program and ensure service for multi-family apartments and rural depots, in contrast to Ontario’s more limited focus on single-family homes.

He said B.C.’s successful container deposit system also means there’s less recyclable material left here for container stewards to collect and sell, so fees have to be higher to cover the system costs.

Newspaper owners can opt out of the program, but must then develop their own recycling measures. So far, newspapers have chosen the latter option while lobbying the province to re-examine the changes.

“We’re talking to some potential partners right now, but we’re optimistic the government will listen not only to ourselves, but

to many businesses and municipalities. There’s a lot of fear about what will happen to recycling,” Nicholson said.

He said the MMBC recycling fees threaten to cost jobs and intensify the financial pressure on newspapers, but requests to sit down with provincial ministers have so far gone unmet.

Most newspapers in B.C. are owned by Black Press, Glacier, and Postmedia, although independent papers still exist and would likely be hit hardest by the changes, Nicholson said.

The Canadian Community Newspaper Association, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses and several other organizations are now ramping up a campaign, rethinkitbc.ca, to convince the province to reconsider its recycling regulations.

“B.C. has one of the best recycling plans in the country,” Nicholson said.

“It appears to be working very well, now government has decided for whatever reason to turn this over to private industry with very little information about where our recycling will end up. But we think this is a solution looking for a problem.”

Man arrested for sex assault, fraud Richmond RCMP have arrested a man suspected of numerous offences, from sexual assault to fraud.

Novid Dadmand, 28, of Richmond has been charged with 11 criminal offences related to sexual assault, break-andenter theft and fraud. The crimes are alleged to have taken place over a six-year period, say Richmond Mounties.

ransportation policy development and implementation is vast, complex, and hugely expensive but so vitally important— arguably a necessity for collective survival in our urban-centric world— that any shirking of the challenge is really not an option. But in comparison with the seemingly unquestioned worthiness of and hence bottomless public purse for health and education policy development and implementation, transportation policy development and implementation and the funding for same is the subject of seemingly endless questioning, re-definition, and rethinking.

Review of policy is not necessarily a ‘bad thing’ although it can become so. No matter how expeditiously undertaken, implementing transportation policy decisions is a long process.

Inaction leading to paralysis does not promote economic health and collective prosperity.

At the moment, the referendum Metro Vancouver citizens were facing at municipal election time this fall to decide on priorities and new revenue sources for public transit has been placed on temporary hold by the provincial government. In early February of this year, The BC Transportation Minister agreed to move the referendum date to “no later than June 30, 2015,” thereby adding a year-and-a-half more time to … here is where it starts to get murky.

The idea for the referendum came from the province. It depends on there being a defined regional transportation plan with options.

Presumably the plan would have come from Translink, the government-created authority

responsible for Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation network including public transport and the major roads and bridges. The region’s mayors, however, for many reasons opposed the idea of the referendum and demanded a stronger role for themselves in setting transportation priorities and in acting on behalf of their citizenry to find new sources for and control of funding.

In response to the Mayors’ position, the Transportation Minister said he was prepared to legislate change to increase mayoral authority over TransLink’s long-term strategies and projects.

This will involve TransLink’s board overseeing operations, budgets and plans in a manner consistent with strategies and plans put forward by the mayors. Then he set a new deadline: “We are asking the mayors’ council to define a regional expansion plan by June 30, 2014,” the Minister explained. “This will allow time for the mayors to build a clear and articulate plan, identify the costs, funding sources and, indeed, finalize the question to support a regional campaign leading to the referendum.”

Obviously, identifying funding sources is a crucially important issue. If the mayors conclude that existing funding sources — the fare box and property taxes — will be sufficient, they can proceed without further approval from the province. If they decide, however, to seek a new funding source or sources, then the provincial government will require this to be approved by regional referendum.

Vancouverites care about transportation issues but this ‘story’ touching as it does on so many intertwined aspects of the challenge—who defines the vision? What is the proper role for governments at all the various levels? What is the proper role for Translink? And, finally, who pays? It is tough to follow. The mayors have asked for and received an enormous challenge. Vancouverites will face an equally tough challenge if the referendum proceeds as currently planned.

Council Update New fire halls secure community safety

By Malcolm Brodie This Fall will mark the start of construction of two more Richmond Malcolm Brodie fire halls, Mayor recognizing another major milestone in fulfilling Council’s vision of ensuring a safe and sustainable community.

Over the years, our fire halls and RCMP headquarters had become functionally obsolete and inadequate to meet the needs of our modern, evolving urban centre. Alarmingly, in the event of a major earthquake, these buildings could have suffered significant damage and placed our residents at risk.

Ten years ago, City Council formulated an ambitious plan to replace and/or upgrade our police and fire facilities while calling for post-disaster rated buildings sufficient to meet current and future community needs. Since then, we have built new fire halls in Steveston, Hamilton and Sea Island. A fourth fire hall underwent a major retrofit to meet seismic standards.

To fulfill Council’s vision, the City also acquired a new Community Safety Building, now home to the Richmond RCMP,

after it was used as an overall security headquarters for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. By retrofitting an existing building, Council completed the entire project far more cost-effectively than otherwise would have been possible.

Starting this Fall, the replacement of the No. 1 Fire Hall located at Gilbert and Granville will present interesting challenges as it is built along with the adjacent Aquatic and Older Adult centres.

Construction of the new Cambie Fire Hall in north Richmond also takes an innovative and costeffective approach. It’s the final community safety construction project. At this site, the City is partnering with the Province to build a joint fire hall and ambulance station – the first such combined facility in a major urban centre in BC. Sustainable building practices have been incorporated in all these facilities. This will help the City meet its targets to reduce greenhouse gases, reduce energy costs and limit our environmental footprint.

Year after year, community safety remains one of Council’s top priorities. By replacing our public safety buildings in a costeffective and sustainable manner, Richmond promises to be a safe community for decades to come.

Ride to Conquer Cancer rider gets bike stolen

by Katya Slepian Contributor The bike of a Richmond resident participating in the 2014 Ride to Conquer Cancer was stolen from in front of her workplace on Tuesday.

Emma Cleverley participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, which

benefits the BC Cancer Foundation, last year as a volunteer and was hoping to ride this year to raise $2500 in memory of her mum and grandmother.

Cleverley has already raised $1550 towards her goal and is hoping to get her bike returned to her soon so that she can continue training and fundraising for the June event.

Back-to-work legislation to end Port Metro Vancouver truckers strike

port minister Lisa Raitt said it’s been a week since they tabled a joint 14-point action plan to address truckers concerns, which centre on unpaid wait times at port terminals and rate undercutting within the industry.

The port strike has crippled most of the usual flow of containers by truck through Metro Vancouver and has begun to trigger layoffs in industries across the province.

UTA drivers were first to halt work on Feb. 26 and unionized Unifor drivers have been on strike since March 10.

Both organized groups of drivers last weekend refused to return to work without further negotiations on the government proposals.

Unifor-VCTA president Paul Johal said resorting to legislation that strips workers of their bargain-

ing rights will backfire on the governments, adding a negotiated settlement is the only sustainable solution.

“The minister can’t expect to stick his head in the sand and make this go away,” Johal said.

UTA spokesman Manny Dosanje also predicted a forced return to work will fail.

“Where are they going to find 1,400 or 1,600 drivers?” he asked.

The federal-provincial plan would require a 10 per cent jump in rates paid for each container moved, as well as a review of other hourly wages and fuel surcharges with changes to kick in by mid-2015.

Terminals will also have to pay truckers $25 per container when they wait more than two hours to load.

It also pledges extended loading hours at terminals and other measures to tighten compliance with rates.

The strike is blocking the normal trade route for almost $900 million worth of cargo per week.

The provincial government will legislate an end to the strike by 250 unionized container port truckers and Port Metro Vancouver is threatening to freeze out other nonunion drivers who don’t return to work immediately.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Wednesday the province will introduce back-to-work legislation as early as Monday, with a 90-day cooling off period, targeting the drivers represented by UniforVancouver Container

Truckers Association.

More than 1,000 nonunion independent owner operators with the United Trucking Association who have also withdrawn service aren’t affected by the threatened legislation.

But Port Metro Vancouver said it’s switching to a new port access system and will deny new licences to non-union drivers who don’t resume deliveries as well.

“We expect everyone with a licence or permit to be at work tomorrow,”port CEO Robin Silvester said. “I cannot imagine why we would issue future licenses or permits under the new licensing system to truck drivers who are not at work tomorrow.”

He said 100 to 150 licences expire over the next six weeks and those drivers are being told they won’t be renewed.

EDITORIAL: Flaherty leaves big shoes to fill

T

he resignation of Finance Minister Jim Flaherty on Tuesday is a pivotal moment for the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Flaherty has been the only finance minister Harper has had, since he became prime minister in January, 2006. A former Ontario finance minister, he has developed a reputation for being careful with taxpayers’ dollars,

seeking ways to save them money (a reduction in the GST and Tax Free Savings Accounts being two examples) and paying down the debt as soon as possible. In many ways, he resembles Paul Martin, who was one of Canada’s most successful finance ministers and did a great deal to keep the government of Jean Chretien in power.

Unlike Martin, Flaherty is moving beyond federal politics.

Martin coveted Chretien’s job and the struggle between them did a

great deal of damage to the government and the Liberal Party.

Harper does not have a lot of ministers or backbenchers who could replace Flaherty. He has chosen Joe Oliver, the 73-year-old natural resources minister, to take over. Clearly, his tenure will not be as long as Flaherty’s.

Oliver does have a lot of experience in the financial industry, and is a competent minister. He should be able to take the government into the October, 2015 election.

He does not have the experience of overseeing the massive spending of a large government body.

However, he can use the tools Flaherty has handed over, and present a balanced budget in the next fiscal year. That will be a plus for a government going into the election.

Economic competence is one of the Conservative government’s core strengths, and is vital for a finance minister.

This year’s theme focuses on getting Canadians cooking with a focus on food skills and preparation.

Eating right to feel right gets more and more complicated each and every year as another study, report, or fad diet or nutrition advice comes out. The question is often, how do you cut through all this extra information and avoid the worrying that results from too much information and sometimes conflicting information?

Our society has serious food issues ranging from environmental impacts of agriculture to diet-related illness causing unnecessary suffering and increasing health care costs. The nutrition information over the years has become simpler: eat fruits and vegetables, limit intake of sugar, oil, and salt, and eat more whole grains. Michael Pollan, in his book, In Defence of Food, reduces it even further: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.”

is extremely difficult when limited by income and, consequently, time. Many of the food skills programs offered in Richmond are tailored towards creating common-sense, easy, and tasty meals while keeping the joy of eating and cooking in mind. Stir it Up, a youth program run by Richmond Food Security, brings young people together to learn how to cook simple, nutritious, tasty meals and simultaneously provides a great space to socialize. Many of our youth go on to work in the food industry.

Cooking skills are just one barrier to eating well.

Over 85 per cent of lowincome families identify healthy eating as important. However, just about 53 per cent are cooking dinners most weeknights.

The cost and time to plan, shop and cook are the biggest impediments to improved nutrition. Many foods that are nutritionally dense, such as kale, collards, cabbages, are often inexpensive, but require skill and time to bring out the flavours.

In Brazil, health officials have created new guidelines to protect against undernutrition and prevent diet-related diseases. The guidelines work across social classes and make an effort to consider the broader social, cultural, and economic implications of food choices.

The guide’s three “Golden Rules” are: (1) Make foods and freshly prepared dishes the basis of your diet, (2) be sure oils, fats, sugar and salt are used in moderation, and (3) limit the intake of

ready-to-consume products and avoid those that are ultra-processed.

In addition to these priority guidelines, health officials add the following suggestions: •Eat regular meals, paying attention, and in appropriate environments.

•Eat in company whenever possible.

•Buy food at places that offer varieties of fresh foods. Avoid those that mainly sell products ready for consumption.

•Develop, practice, share and enjoy your skills in food preparation and cooking.

•Plan your time to give meals and eating proper time and space.

•When you eat out, choose restaurants that serve freshly made dishes and meals. Avoid fast food

chains.

•Be critical of the commercial advertisement of food products.

These guidelines provide a great foundation for folks that are trying to navigate the often overwhelming wealth of information available around the question: What should I eat?!? This Nutrition Month, focus on learning a few easy recipes and share them with your friends or families. Or better, yet, share these guidelines and post them in your kitchen. A few, basic recipes, coupled with cooking skills can make a world of difference in our personal and community nutrition.

How about a referendum on casino revenue?

Editor: It was recently reported that the City of Richmond share of casino revenues exceeded budgeted expectations of $12.4 million to a record $17.4 million.

Also noted was that since 1999, the city has received $136.7 Million from these revenues.

Question: Who is the rightful owner of these revenues?

Answer: The citizens of Richmond.

However, who has the legal control of these revenues?

Answer: Our nine-member city council is given the sole discretion by the Province as to the uses of these revenues.

Has this casino money been spent prudently ?

In my humble opinion, no.

Under the current situation, it would have been better for the majority of Richmond citizens if these casino revenues did not exist at all.

A pattern is emerging whereby council has shown no interest in using these funds to buffer taxes and/or annual tax increases they themselves impose onto Richmond citizens.

Of even more concern, these casino revenues act as seed money for various “pet projects” (eg. Richmond Olympic Oval) by council that most certainly

Editor: It is really demeaning to women to have male announcers on radio and television advertising women’s hygiene products. The latest annoyance is a male advocating annual mammograms to “take care of the girls.”

Editor: Could someone please explain to me how the gang that controls our provincial government was allowed to call itself the Liberal Party? Obviously when “Branding” experts suggested that false advertising could work in the party’s favour, and that no one would really care about the hypocrisy inherent in the name’s adoption, they were absolutely correct in their assessment of the depth of the average B.C. voter’s perspicacity.

The only things “liberal” about this group are their schedules for

The prayers didn’t work (but Cy-Pres did!)

Reasons for judgment were released last week in another case on Wills interpretation. In Baliko Estate v. Baliko, the Will maker (in a 2001 Will) left his Estate to a hospital. However, the description of the organization – a Foundation that was actually legally able to receive the bequest – was missing. The question for the Court was whether it could infer the proper name of the organization (the Foundation) from the Will itself.

In the Will, the Will maker’s only child was disinherited. The child argued that, since the gift (as described in the Will) was to a non-existent entity, it should be disallowed and the Estate should be distributed as an intestacy – that is, as if no Will existed. That would result in the child inheriting the entire Estate.

The charitable foundation argued that the legal doctrine of Cy-Pres should apply, to allow the Court to construct a gift in its favour.

The child’s argument did not work. The Court simply applied common sense (the Court could have applied Cy-Pres but didn’t need to!), and held that the only reasonable interpretation of the Will was that the Will maker intended to benefit the hospital, and so the foundation received the gift. I would presume that the child is eligible to launch action under the Wills Variation Act, but that issue was not part of this case.

letters Commit to the agricultural green zone Editor: You need a vision to achieve sustainable farming and it starts with land and we need to save the agricultural green zone by supporting the No. 5 Road backlands policy. Richmond City Council created the policy to support farming in the back lands behind the Highway to Heaven along Higway 99 decades ago. The policy states “ Co-operate as necessary to remove constraints to farming the backlands, in partnership with others...undertake active farming of the backlands.”

The Lingyen Proposal would allow for a 250-metre setback for a development on ALR land, well past the 110-metre setback allowed under the No. 5 Road backlands policy. This development would threaten the backlands green zone because it would allow for a precedent that could lead to other applications.

1. The Gardens development has netted the City 12 acres of farm land.

2. The new owners of “ Mylora Golf Course “ have proposed donating 20 acres of farm land in the back lands to the City.

3. Kwantlen Polytechnical University has asked for farm land, in perpetuity for the development of a Sustainable Agriculture Institute for the purpose of training in new, state of the art types of farming that would include research.

These changes allow for a opportunity to fast track the agricultural green zone in the backlands and an exciting new future for lands that have been under utilized for decades. Meeting with Kent Mullinex and others at Kwantlen has been exciting—their plan for sustainable farming and education is compelling. In the future, Kwantlen will need 30 to 45 acres and the green zone could be their permanent home. I think we should support education in farming and maintain the 110-metre setback for development on No. 5 Road.

Currently there is no agreement between Kwantlen and the temple.

Our group, CalmR, is dedicated to working with the city and the Lingyen Mountain Temple to find a compromise that would help to satisfy the needs of the new retreat and the needs of the city for sustainable farming on the No. 5 Road backlands.

When a previous city council created the No. 5 Road backlands policy, it could never have imagined that a proposal of this size would ever be submitted to the city and that farmland in Richmond could ever be threatened in the way it has, so now is the time to commit to the agricultural green zone along Highway 99 and make it clear that we will not tolerate its erosion.

We ask that the temple masters please have vision and see that bigger things are possible for the No. 5 Road backlands and this proposal would work against a better future and against the no. 5 roads back Lands policy.

news Government needs to focus on increasing opportunities for people with disabilities

by Katya Slepian Contributor Three months ago the B.C. government started the White Paper Process, a public consultation process to garner feedback about increasing accessibility and decreasing barriers for people living with disabilities.

March 11 marked the completion of the consultation process and while the government has not yet released the results, the consultation process has gathered thousands of comments and suggestions, both online and during the in-person sessions that took place in many cities.

The Richmond session took place on Feb. 11 and while Ella

Huang, executive director of the Richmond Centre for Disability, believes that such a process is a good start, she worries that the government is trying to do too much too quickly.

“I think the idea was good, to have public consultation on disability issues and getting input from the people [with disabilities] themselves is always good but I think that the process was a little bit rushed. It was a bit too ambitious to cover so much.”

Huang hopes that the government will address what she believes is the main issue plaguing people with disabilities; a lack of financial support.

“Disability benefits haven’t been increased in many years and the cost of living keeps increasing so for a lot of people just

having their disability benefits is not enough.”

But even those people who are able to work face challenges in getting into the workforce.

“Employment can be a very effective tool for people to be more independent,” says Huang, but she adds that the government isn’t doing enough to provide specialized support for people with disabilities, from pre-employment skills development to on the job support.

But she thinks that perhaps the most important thing that the government can do is “work with employers so that people with disabilities are given real equal opportunities, not just calling in people with disabilities for the interview” but providing the tools for people to excel at their jobs.

ia Fiona Kut has been writing ever since she was a child and her persistence has finally paid off.

Richmond's colourful author, photographer and entertainer Dan Propp has a new book to his name.

The Postcard Photographer takes readers on a leisurely walk back to the 1960s. The first story in the book focuses on two lost individuals: one from Los Angeles and the other from Powell River. In Vancouver both discover their identities, passions and goals.

Though fiction, the two stories reflect Propp, who imparts many nostalgic memories as a photography student in 1960s in B.C. Meanwhile, AK White, a Richmond resident, will launch her debut novel Sunday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Village Books in Steveston.

The memorial ceremony had an emotional scene that brought me to tears.

I wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did, but it came through for me with flying colours. If you like your fiction easy and deep at the same time, then The Paradise Guest House is for you. Sussman is also the author of French Lessons.

ancouver Opera is bringing the powerful art of opera to Richmond in the form of two different shows, including one Saturday at Gateway Theatre.

“Opera’s Greatest Hits and More” will feature a selection of opera’s greatest arias and ensembles on the Minoru Park theatre’s MainStage.

Vancouver Opera—the second largest opera company in Canada—will bring a variety of works to life, including the sultry “Habanera” from Carmen, Figaro’s famously charming and funny solo from The Barber of Seville and the duet for tenor and baritone from The Pearl Fishers.

The family-friendly concert stars members of the company’s young artists program: soprano Sheila Christie, mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff, tenor Rocco Rupolo and baritone Aaron Durand.

It’s the same show Vancouver Opera presented at Steveston-London Secondary School for a night last month. The concert is designed to introduce the beauty and power of opera to new audiences, according to James Wright, Vancouver Opera’s general director.

“It’s a big step for people to make, from no opera experience to purchasing a ticket to a performance at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. These fun concerts will allow people to take a smaller first step, and get a tantalizing taste of opera singing. And for opera veterans living in Richmond, these will be entertaining and enjoyable evenings of opera music with some wonderful young artists.”

Audiences will be guided through the performance by a host who will provide context and background.

Then, in two weeks, Vancouver Opera returns to Richmond with two shows at Minoru Chapel as part of the Minoru Chapel Opera series.

“Scenes Rarely Seen” is Wednesday, April 2, showcasing two operas not often performed: Iphigénie en Tauride by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Sāvitri

by Gustav Holst. Both are mythical stories connected by compelling themes of life and death.

Based on Euripides’ ancient Greek tragedy, Iphigénie en Tauride tells of the Agamemnon family in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Holst’s one-act opera, Savitri, is a 30-minute piece based on the Mahabharata theology. Savitri, wife of Satyavan, contemplates life after she is confronted by death.

Two shows are scheduled—2 p.m. and 7 p.m.—at Minoru Chapel, 6540 Gilbert Rd., next to Gateway Theatre. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 604-276-4300. Admission is $20 for adults, $18 for students and seniors. Cash ticket sales also at the door, if available.

Ford forges ahead on all fronts

by Zack Spencer The Vancouver International Auto Show gets underway next week. Today, the Driveway team looks at the offerings for 2014 from the Big Three domestic manufacturers in paper and online at drivewaycanada.ca Ford has been on a roll here in Canada; finishing out 2013 as the top selling brand for the fourth consecutive year.

There are some very big products coming from Ford over the coming year that will make a big impact on its sales and image, and you will get a peek at some of them at the Vancouver International Auto Show.

The first is the biggest introduction of any automaker this year, the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck. The F-150 isn’t just the best selling truck in Canada for almost 50 years; it is the overall sales champ, selling more than any other nameplate. Period.

Ford isn’t merely introducing an updated model.

No, they went to town, developing a entirely new manufacturing process that will revolutionize the full-size truck space.

The body of the next F-150 is built of an aluminum alloy material that Ford claims is 318kg lighter but stronger than the outgoing model. In addition, the frame is made of thinner, lighter and stronger high-tensile steel that combined with the body, produces the weight savings. This is an industry first, and a revolutionary approach to building trucks. In addition to a lighter body, the engineers have developed two new engines to compliment the existing 3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 model and 5.0L normally aspirated V8 engine. The first is a new 3.5L V6 engine, replacing

the outgoing 3.7L model base engine.

With a lighter truck, a smaller engine can do the work. A smaller 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is also going to be introduced with an auto start-stop function that switches off the engine when the truck is sitting still. Official fuel economy ratings have not been released but Ford executives tell me they hope to have best in class gasoline fuel economy.

Other enhancements to the F-150 include a new stepladder that integrates into the tailgate. Ford was the first to have this feature but it has been improved for 2015. The rear tailgate also has a soft-open feature that prevents the tailgate from slamming down, plus a light switch near the back of the truck to eliminate the bed with new LED lights.

The second vehicle that will have a big impact of Ford, but more of an image car, is the all-new 2015 Mustang. Interestingly, about 25 percent of all Mustangs are sold here in British Columbia, so this is a big deal for us.

The 2015 Mustang is now going to be sold around the world and developed as part of the “One Ford” approach to making cars they can share in every market. This means the Mustang will be sold, for the first time, with right hand drive for countries like the UK, Australia and Japan.

The stance of the new Mustang is lower, wider and more muscular, with the wheels pushed out to provide better stability. The fastback has a steeper rake and a bigger trapezoidal grille has enhanced the shark nose design. Initially the Mustang will be sold as a coupe and convertible with the base and GT trim, the higher performance models will come later.

upscale than any Mustang before.

Under the hood the GT trim continues with the 5.0L V8 with improved valves and cylinders helping to pump out over 420hp. The base 3.7L V6 is also carried over but now with 300hp. The big news is the introduction of a 2.3L turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder with an estimated 300hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque.

For years, the criticism has been the lack of independent rear suspension in the Mustang but this is no longer the case. A fully independent rear

suspension will help get all the power down to the ground from all three engines plus provide improved handling. Ford is hoping with this new platform and available engines, this new model will provide as many thrills as any German sports model and for less money. Pricing has not been finalized but expect it to be in line with existing 2014 Mustang pricing.

Lincoln ready to challenge again

The once mighty domestic luxury brand has been left too long without any unique offerings to distinguish itself from the parent brand Ford.

Well, there are big plans afoot at Lincoln to change all of that. With a lot of hard work, unique designs, engines and marketing, Ford is hoping to make Lincoln relevant again, not just taking on rival Cadillac but also the best of the import luxury brands.

I had a chance to catch up with Jim Farley, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Service for Lincoln and Ford at a recent auto show. Getting to spend time with one of the driving forces behind the new Lincoln was eye opening. He told me “All you need to know is two facts.

The first fact is that we sold all of our premium brands, (Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo and Range Rover) we have no other luxury brand than Lincoln. So if you want a luxury brand and you’re an executive at the company, you’re going to be driving a Lincoln. The second fact that you need to know about is that we have already spent the resources on the product, for fully differentiated products that the company has not done in decades. So, this is kind of the first time, in probably twenty years, that the company has really, in Lincoln, to be truly global. And the decision to go to China is very important for Canadian customers because it is the ultimate example of our commitment.”

There is a four-vehicle on slot of new products that Lincoln hopes will bring them back. The first was the MKZ sedan that came out in 2013.

It has been selling well, and the hybrid version has been a surprise, with buyers choosing it in volumes Lincoln had not expected. The second vehicle will be the all-new MKC compact luxury SUV, based on the Ford Escape that will arrive this summer. Farley describes the MKC this way “It’s a subcompact, Escapesized true luxury product but it has even more exclusive features compared to the Ford product than we have ever done at Lincoln before.

The design of the new MKC has a very European silhouette but with a stylized Lincoln grille. The back of the MKC was a major engineering an design challenge due to the wrap around tailgate that brings to mind the Audi Q7.

What Lincoln is hoping to do is offer more for less than the German competition. $39,940 is a great starting point for any small luxury crossover. With 300hp and a great starting price the MKC should find an audience.

The biggest problem Lincoln has is getting people to consider the brand. The executives at Ford and Lincoln are realistic and know it will take years for buyers to be aware of the brand and to accept its new products. By moving Lincoln away from Ford with separate designers, engineers and management will hopefully make Lincoln a strong brand yet again. Chevy rolls into town with shiny new wheels

Chevrolet has certainly listened to their customers and in the Impala; it has given drivers a vehicle that has flair, as well as potency.

The model year 2014 is already in full swing for Chevrolet as it rolls its products into the Vancouver International Auto Show.

Many of the new and revamped products are already in dealerships so let’s take a look at what’s especially notable for this year.

While the diesel model was launched last summer, it bears a 2014 designation.

Under its hood is a 2.0L turbo-diesel that packs in 151 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft torque. Yes, it has that much torque and is most impressive.

According to the Chevrolet, it has a 0-96 km/h (60 mph) performance of 8.6 seconds, “which is better than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI automatic and competitive with German diesel cars that dominate the North American market.”

In addition to that, it receives an estimated fuel consumption of 4.2L/100km on the highway and 7.5L/100km in the city.

While the Cruze diesel had already been avail-

able in Europe, the proven engine needed to be adapted to North American emissions ratings.

It comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and 376.6L trunk space.

It has an MSRP of $24,945 plus $1,550 destination freight charge.

Impala Chevrolet’s flagship sedan is all new for the 2014 model year. Released in 2013, this five-passenger vehicle can certainly hold its own in a segment whose competitors are getting stronger and stronger.

Among its redeeming new features, an all-new exterior design. I think it looks great. Having had the opportunity to take it for a test drive, Chevrolet has certainly listened to their customers and in the Impala; it has given drivers a vehicle that has flair, as well as potency.

That’s why it wouldn’t sell ell on a lot. The bank must have seized it due to an unpaid balance.

As before, I panicked. I didn’t idnn’t want to get involved in this right now. w. SSure, I sold him the car, but how was I supposed seed to know it had

a lien on it? I realized the wholesaler* had scammed me! If that fellow had asked for a CarProof history report or even a provincial lien search, I’d be the one screaming.

Over the next several hours, I kept letting my phone go to voicemail – I couldn’t bear speaking to the young man. I knew I had to switch phones again.

I felt a bit ashamed. But I needed to be selfish about this. At this point, the best thing for me was cash. And lots of it. *Wholesaler – Vehicle sellers may call themselves auto brokers or wholesalers to sound legitimate and cheaper. But if they’re selling to private buyers, they must be licensed as a dealer. Like any curber - an individual posing as a private seller but selling vehicles as a business – wholesalers and brokers offer none of the protection the law provides for purchases from a Vehicle Sales Authority licensed dealer. Walt learned that lesson, sson, but his buyer paid the price.

Camaro Z/28 For those diehard track day fans who have been waiting for an even more performance inspired Camaro, the wait is over.

Almost.

For 2014, the Z/28 makes its debut.

All 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds.

However, the new Camaro Z/28 adds features like a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro’s history.

Alongside its aerodynamic prowess, under its hood is a mechanical wonder.

Its 7.0L, LS7 V8 handassembled engine was codeveloped with Corvette Racing to make it as potent as possible.

Its monster engine produces an estimated 500 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

With those figures on paper, don’t expect amazing fuel results!

The second annual Rotary Skates for the World will support Richmond's Feed-U-Cate project.

Presented by River Green, the event is organized by the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club in partnership with the Richmond School District to further raise awareness and help fund the local breakfast program.

Feed-U-Cate was created last year by former Richmond School District employee Glenn Kishi to help address the high number of students who go to school hungry. Educators realized children cannot learn with an empty stomach.

Feed-U-Cate currently involves 16 Richmond schools, and more are applying to join the program.

The program needs between $15,000 and $20,000 per year to keep going.

The Richmond Review and ASPAC Developments have stepped up as event sponosrs, but additional sponsorships are available. Tim Hortons is sponsoring a snack break at the May 8 event, which will feature several high school students—who've collected pledges—skating along with Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Coun. Bill McNulty.

Registration for the day opens at 4 p.m., with skating starting at 6:15 p.m. at the Richmond Olympic Oval. A performance by the Connaught Figure Skating Club will be held at 8 p.m., followed by a lucky draw at 8:45 p.m. If you'd like to join in the skate, the cost is $5 per person or $15 for a team of four.

Are there any coins issued in circulation from the last 30 years that are worth much money? The reason I am asking is that I have a large amount of coin that I want to get rid of. Either selling or taking to the bank.

A:

First we will deal with silver coins. Any dime, quarter, half or dollar from 1967 or older is silver and is worth approximately 12 times face value. Coins dated 1968 may or may not have silver in them. Use a fridge magnet to check them. If the magnet does not pick them up, they are silver.

Next we will discuss collector value coins.

Look for a 2000 dime, quarter or half dollar with a small letter “P” under the Queen’s portrait.

These are very scarce and start at $1,000 each.

Still dealing with quarters, in 1992, 1999 and 2000 some quarters have a wrong die axis. What I mean by this is that when you flip a Canadian coin side to side the “heads & tails” remain up. On the wrong die axis the coins can be a 90 degree turn (ie ↑→) or 180 degree where the “heads & tails” are reversed. These coins start at $50 for the 90 degree to $200 for the 180 degree turn. A 1965 quarter with a 180 degree turn also exists and starts at $500.

In 1973 Canada issued quarters celebrating the 100 years of the RCMP. These quarters came with a smaller portrait of the Queen. Some early strikes came with the larger portrait used from 1968-1972 and 1974-1978. These are called “Large Bust” quarters and start at $50 in value.

In 2004 there is a rare dime with no “P” under the Queen’s portrait. I have had one in my hands even though it it is still unlisted in the catalogue. This should start at $1,000 dollars.

In 1969 a dime with a large date (1969) was issued and now has a value of $4,000. Use a 1968 dime to see the size of a large date and a 1970 dime to see the size of the common small date 1969.

In nickels there scarcest of modern dates would be the 1965 large bead variety. This coin has 138 beads around the Queen’s head verses 119 beads of the regular coin. On this coin the key for detection of the large bead is that the last Jewel on the left of the Queen’s tiara is detached from the tiara. The large bead variety is worth $200 and up. The common small is only worth face value.

Not all Real Estate agents host open houses in the same way. Safety is number 1 on my list, so I keep the door locked. When you knock, I will happily invite you in to tour the home. I want to know who is in the house at all times, and I treat the home and it’s contents as if it were my own. It is a private residence, so a knock on the door is proper protocol.

In my opinion, an open house is not be the best way to find the Buyer for that home, but it does expose the home to a variety of people, and as a Listing Agent that is very valuable. There is a Buyer for every home, and it’s our job to find that Buyer however we can.

If you are already working with a Realtor®, tell the agent hosting the open.

Realtors® are required to ask Buyers if they are working with another agent.

Armed with this information, the agent at the home will not try to solicit you. If you have not yet decided on a Realtor®, let the agent at the home know that you are still shopping for one. This is an opportunity to see if you want that Realtor® to work with you to sell or buy a home. Open houses are a good way to find an agent because you will meet face-to-face, and you can witness them in action.

Many people suffer from low iron levels. This can be due to a variety of reasons including low iron intake from your diet (especially if you are vegetarian), or excessive bleeding. Females especially seem to be more prone to become iron-deficient. Traditionally, iron supplements came either as synthetic salts such as ferrous gluconate or ferrous sulfate, or natural plant based supplements such as Floradix. Nowadays however, I tend to recommend hemebased irons. Heme is a compound found in red meat that our body recognizes and absorbs preferentially. As a result, studies suggest that heme-based irons absorb preferentially to synthetic and plant based iron supplements. Examples of heme-based irons include Proferrin and Feramax. Directions for either is to take 1-2 tablets per day with a good source of vitamin C, which helps the iron absorb. I often also recommend a good source of vitamin B12 to help you recover energy quicker. A vitamin B12 I recommend is AOR Methylcobalamin 15 mg. The answer to this is complex as it depends on what investigative field you will be in and the type of work you will be doing. Most P.I.’s do people investigations related to wrong doing of some kind. Proper training, education and experience is important because we are dealing with people’s lives. The BC Ministry of Justice lists the regulatory requirements and the courses required for getting the basic P.I. under Supervision license. The full license requires further education, training and a few thousand hours of experience working with a fully licensed P.I. firm(s). I helped write the on-line course for the Police Knowledge Network that’s mandatory in BC, and soon for other provinces, and I think it’s a good one. With the evolution of both TV and fireplace designs this has become a very common question. I completely understand the need to incorporate a single feature wall in a room and stacking the TV over the fireplace seems logical.

A detail like this in your room is a large investment, so to keep things simple I present two primary questions that need to be asked when starting to design this feature.

1. Can you protect the TV from the heat that is coming from the fireplace? This can be done by walking through the fireplace’s installation requirements, finishing details, and framing clearances.

This information will allow you to protect the TV from the heat by installing proper mantels, recessing TV’s back from the face of the wall, and/or ensuring the TV is high enough above the fireplace.

2. What is a comfortable viewing height of the TV based on your seating arrangements in the room? There are many resources that can help you with this such as the retailer where you are purchasing your TV or even the internet. This question may cause you to re-think the detail as a viewing height that is uncomfortable may quickly become regrettable.

In order to treat presbyopia, your optometrist may prescribe a lens with two separate optical powers. Generally the top two thirds are designated for a previous prescription, whether it is nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. There is a direct correlation between chronic and severe gum disease and higher risk of head and neck cancer caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). British researchers have noticed the rates for HPV related oral cancer are increasing and may surpass tobacco use as the main cause of oral cancer.

A report in Archives of Otolaryngology found that of 124 oral cancer patients 50 were caused by HPV which may be linked to poor oral health and presence of gum disease.

Another study from the University of Texas Health Sciences analyzed data from 3,439 health survey participants aged 30-69 years. The health data included measures of presence of gum disease, overall oral health rating, use of mouth rinses, number of teeth lost as well as age, gender, marital status, marijuana and cigarette use and oral sex habits. Participants with poor oral health were 56% more likely to develop oral HPV infections. This study also showed a link between oral HPV infections and number of teeth lost.

HPV affects a number of areas including areas of the skin and mucous membranes that line the body. This virus needs an “entry portal” like a wound in the mouth to infect oral tissues, like mouth ulcers or chronic inflammation, in particular (gum disease). Oral HPV infection causes 40-80% of throat/mouth cancers and one particular strain of HPV has been linked to up to one third of all throat cancers (ref. Medical News Today). Male smokers who used marijuana and participated in frequent oral sex had higher risks of oral HPV infection.

However, the good news is maintaining good oral hygiene and health can prevent HPV infection and HPV related cancers.

On Wednesday night in Aldergrove, 16-year-old future Vancouver Giant John Wesley scored twice and assisted on another—a feat matched by 17-year-old Liam Lawson—as Richmond downed Aldergrove Kodiaks 7-1 in the opening game of the Pacific Junior Hockey League championship final.

A

pple introduced the Mac. Space Shuttle Challenger was launched. And Chicago White Sox defeated Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 in 25 innings—the longest game in Major League Baseball history.

It was 1984, when movie-goers spent $2.50 to see Ghostbusters, digital watches with metal bands were a dominant fashion statement, and Richmondites clammoured for basketball tickets.

Steveston Packers and Richmond Colts were ranked among the province’s best boys’ teams throughout the season. Fans routinely had to line up outside the gymnasium doors of the two high schools at least a half hour before tip off—just for the chance of getting in.

Interest peaked on St. Patrick’s Day when the two Lulu Island rivals played off for the B.C. “AA” high school boys’ basketball championship at Vancouver’s PNE Agrodome.

“It was the story in Richmond that March,” said Chris Kennedy, then a local Grade 5 student who was just starting to learn the game from teacher-coach George Nakanishi.

“I can still remember the coverage in The Richmond Review. It was a big deal—announcing that Richmond was the centre of basketball in the Lower Mainland with Steveston and Richmond playing in the final,” continued Kennedy, who today is a governor of the B.C. High School Boys’ Basketball Association and superintendent of schools in the West Vancouver School District.

Bill Disbrow’s Colts were the dominant team in the province during the 1980s, playing in four championship games in five years and winning three of them—including a 74-61 victory over Coquitlam’s Centennial Centaurs in 1985. They were No. 1 for much of the 1983-84 season too, but it would ultimately go down as the year of the Packers who defeated the Colts 84-59 behind a final-game record 45 points by guard Gareth Davies.

Details of the game—30 years ago this week—are becoming a bit blurred among the participants. But it remains one of the great moments in Richmond’s sporting history.

An announced crowd of 6,282—well beyond capacity—took in the game.

“Organizers decided to just let everyone who came get entrance. I believe it was said to be 2,000 over capacity but there was amazing interest and it was so exciting for the players,” said Disbrow.

While Taylor was limited to eight points over the course of the game, guard Rod Ast stepped up for the Colts with 20 points. Most of Ast’s baskets—seven of them in the first half when there was still some doubt of the result—reflected his never-say-die attitude and frequently pulled the Colts to within two or three points. When he fouled out in the third quarter it seemed to take the heart out of the Colts, who were outscored 23-8 in the final quarter.

The Packers never trailed in the game. Able to overcome a considerable size disadvantage by employing a run-and-gun style that worked to near perfection, they scored the opening bucket and led 15-10 after a quarter. They stretched the lead to eight points, 42-34, at halftime and led 61-51 after three quarters.

“We knew they couldn’t keep up

with us for 40 minutes if we kept running,” Packers’ coach Chappell said after the game. “I just asked my guys to run so hard I’d have to pick them up off the floor at the end of the game. You never know what to expect when Steveston and Richmond play. You can’t say you’re going to win before hand. But if you’re going to win, the whole team has to play all out for 40 minutes.”

The game wasn’t just the last

for many of the players, but also Chappell, who went out on top— announcing his retirement that evening after 14 years of coaching, 289 victories, and Steveston’s first B.C. title.

While the Colts didn’t win the game, they did net another honour.

Their fans, who engaged in lively banter with Packer faithful throughout the final, won the tournament’s Spirit Award.

Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships will feature many of world’s best One of gymnastics’ premier international events, the 2014 Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships, will take place at the Richmond Olympic Oval from April 9 to 12.

The championships will feature some of the world’s best artistic, trampoline and rhythmic gymnasts—including Canadians who have risen to new and impressive heights.

At the 2012 Olympics, Ontario’s Rosannah Maclennan won gold in trampoline; Canada’s only gold medal of the Games. At the same time, Canada’s women’s artistic gymnastics team, including Coquitlam’s Brittany Rogers,finished a best-ever fifth.

In 2013, North Vancouver’s Scott Morgan became the first Canadian man to qualify for a world championships’ event final since Kyle Shewfelt in 2006. Ontario’s Victoria Moors made headlines as she successfully completed a new move that is named after her and required a new level of difficulty to be added to the code of points.
