• Produces healthy collagen • Dissolves cholesterol deposits • Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease • Increases blood flow to coronary arteries • Prevents formation of free radicals Humans do not make Vitamin C like animals do, we need to supplement this essential vitamin to meet our daily needs. Vitamin C and Lysine work together to build collagen, which strengthens and holds together the coronary cells. Inadequate amounts of Vitamin C means poor collagen. Coronary cells then fall apart just as bricks do without good mortar. Coronary arteries, closest to the heart, receive the greatest pressure. Without enough Vitamin C the collagen weakens. This sets the stage for heart attack. The work of Dr. Sydney Bush shows that vitamin C + Lysine can help reverse the process. Reg $29.99 Sale $23.99 SAVE $6.00 Berry or Plain 300g size

commercial production. Health Canada said in a statement March 14 it will notify law enforcement of any users who fail to comply with the notification requirement, an apparent shift from past refusals to disclose locations to local authorities on privacy grounds. The new Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulation allows licensed medical marijuana users – more than 16,000 of them are in B.C. – to buy dried pot only from approved commercial producers via mail order. Many B.C. municipalities are keen to stamp out medical marijuana home grows, which they say often pose an electrical fire risk to neighbours and may leave mould and other safety hazards behind for future residents. But most also don’t want to take on the burden of fixing what they see as a problem created by the federal government. Mission Mayor Ted Adlem doesn’t support sending police in to enforce compliance with the new medical pot law, even in cases where Ottawa discloses users who have failed to send their notification. “I’m not interested in throwing people in jail for growing marijuana,” Adlem said. “Who’s going to foot the bill to close these people down who have not notified and ceased to operate? I’m far more in favour of being able to have my fire inspector check the place out for electrical safety.” He predicts many other B.C. municipalities will also have little interest in making it a policing project.
“I think most mayors are concerned about the cost of doing this. Is it something we really want to be spending our policing budget on? I don’t think so.” Mission already knows the locations of about 100 of an estimated 800 local licensed

medical growers, he said. Adlem noted soon-tobe-illegal growers may lie on the federal form and keep growing in defiance of the law. He said Health Canada’s handling of the issue has been “a joke” and the warn-
ing that law enforcement will be notified is vague. Sensible BC campaign director Dana Larsen accused the government of reneging on promises of privacy for medical marijuana users. “There are going to be some people who lie about it, absolutely,” Larsen predicted. “It puts patients in a difficult position where they have to lie to the government on an official form or defy the government and not send the form in.” He said it’s unreasonable to force approved users to throw away “perfectly good medicine” under threat of prosecution and then buy more from new corporate dealers. The order to destroy unused pot also applies to users who buy from other small growers designated to grow for them under the old system. “It’s putting a lot of fear into patients,” Larsen said. “If they don’t send this notice
back or if it gets lost in the mail when they send it back, Health Canada is going to send cops to their door.” Larsen said a national protest is planned for April 1, when cannabis reform supporters will bombard Health Minister Rona Ambrose’s office with phone calls and emails. New commercial pot producers won’t be allowed to supply medical marijuana dispensaries or compassion clubs. That leaves Larsen, who operates a Vancouver dispensary, in the position of continuing to buy and sell illegally grown pot under the new rules. “We’re not really too worried about sourcing medicine for our patients,” he said. “The City of Vancouver recently announced they intend to make dispensaries the lowest priority and not bother us.”

Green machine gathers in BC BC Views by Tom Fletcher Canada’s sleek, imported green propaganda machine rolled into the capital last week for a couple of days of meetings. You wouldn’t have heard about it, because they didn’t stage any protests or press conferences. Instead they met quietly with selected reporters as well as politicians from both sides of the aisle. They didn’t invite me for some reason, but from what I can gather, it was a friendly networking session. When I speak of our U.S.-directed environmental movement, many people still don’t know what I mean. They see the sign-waving on TV and assume it’s all spontaneous, driven by passionate volunteers. Nuke the Whales for Jesus, as we used to joke in the 1970s. It’s an industry now, and as with our automotive industry, Canada is a branch plant of the U.S. The Victoria event was an annual conference called Organizing for Change, sponsored by Tides Canada. Thanks mainly to the work of B.C. researcher Vivian Krause, this offshoot of the U.S. Tides Foundation now at least identifies itself while it pulls B.C.’s political strings. Organizing for Change currently includes Ecojustice, G r e e n p e a c e , Sierra Club B.C., ForestEthics Advocacy, ForestEthics Solutions, Georgia Strait Alliance, Dogwood Initiative, Pembina Institute, West Coast Environmental Law,

Wildsight and Seattlebased Conservation Northwest. Tides is itself a front for wealthy charitable foundations based mostly in Seattle and California, funded by billionaires who see “saving” B.C. as their personal eco-project. Their hired activists met with Environment Minister Mary Polak to discuss her justintroduced Water Sustainability Act. This was to demand heavy fees and choking regulations on water used for “fracking,” that nefarious gas drilling technology so demonized in fake documentaries and celebrity protests. Tides no longer attempts to hide its strategy of targeting energy development in B.C. and Alberta. Its tactics are well known, too. Environmentalists need high-profile wins, and the economic pain is best inflicted outside of the U.S., the biggest polluter in world history. Organizing for Change’s stated priorities for the year are the “last stand of the Great Bear Rainforest,” the “Sacred Headwaters” and the Water Sustainability Act. Professional protesters are mainly just taking credit for the 2012 buy-back of Shell’s coalbed gas licences around the headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers. Tahltan Central Council declared that territory theirs in 1910, and having pros roll in with slogans and graphics wasn’t exactly crucial to the outcome. Their greatest marketing success so far is the Great Bear Rainforest, which is continually

portrayed as being in peril from hunting, logging and of course, oil and gas development. One of the documents Krause unearthed is a 2008 plan entitled “Tar Sands Campaign Strategy 2.1” that has proven remarkably prophetic. As Greenpeace, Sierra and ForestEthics were negotiating the 2007 Great Bear land use plan, other network members were preparing to “raise the negatives” and market Alberta as a unique threat to planetary integrity. I’ve written before about the distortions and evasions required to present such a fossil fuel fairy tale. Suffice it to say that while we have busloads of protesters in B.C., you don’t see them in those benevolent petro-states Angola, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Kuwait or Algeria. They’re not saving the whole planet, just the safe and lucrative parts. And as I mentioned after the protesterstaged Neil Young concert tour, it’s amazing how American oil and gas interests and Alaska oil tankers remain invisible to this sophisticated network. NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert met with the green machine too. He wants all of B.C.’s groundwater mapped and measured deep into the Earth’s crust. That should take a while.

ICBC invests $160,000 in East Kootenay road improvements Submitted
Roundabouts, new crosswalks and designated turning lanes are the types of road improvement projects ICBC invested in B.C. last year to help make roads safer for everyone, including pedestrians and cyclists. In 2013, ICBC invested approximately $160,000 in 10 road improvement projects and safety studies to help make East Kootenay roads safer for everyone. “Road safety is a high priority for my constituents in East Kootenay,” said Bill Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “I am pleased to see the collaboration between ICBC and the Ministry of Transportation that is benefitting our region.” ICBC launched its road improvement program in 1990, and since then has invested approximately $120 million in road improvement projects and safety studies across B.C. In 2013, ICBC invested approximately $1.7 million in

the Southern Interior and $8 million in projects and safety audits across the province. “Everyone benefits from road improvements – from drivers to pedestrians – because safer roads mean fewer crashes, which also translates into lower claim costs,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “We’ll continue to invest in road safety initiatives that help us keep rates as low as possible.” All proposed road improvement projects are assessed based on their ability to make roads safer. The most recent evaluation of the program concluded that over a two year time period, overall, for every dollar invested, ICBC and its customers see a return rate of

The evaluation found that following a project’s implementation, there is on average, a 20 per cent reduction in severe crashes and a 12 per cent reduction in property damage crashes. ICBC also participates in engineering studies and assists communities in the planning of roadways and managing traffic. As road improvements are made, drivers may also need to adopt new driving behaviours, such as adjusting to traffic pattern changes and understanding the rules of the road. Roadways are a very dynamic environment with situations and circumstances that can change quickly. There is great potential for injury and property damage if drivers are not obeying the rules of the road. Signs and signals such as school zones, stop, yield signs and traffic lights are only a few tool used to assist drivers in keeping safe while they navigate City streets. In order for these signs and signals to work, they first need to be seen then obeyed. Please be aware of and respect all traffic signage and signals when driving all year. Make sure our streets are safe for everyone! A Message from the Cranbrook RCMP and the City of Cranbrook.

Under this bylaw, except as otherwise authorized by this bylaw, no person shall discharge a Firearm or use a Bow anywhere within the City of Cranbrook. Gregarious Gardener
10 Neat Things Expanded flood control service contemplated
,
by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
New Ornamentals
1. A shrub for every yard. If you want to add dimension and depth to your yard there is nothing better than planting a shrub. From useful to just plain pretty, shrubs come in all shapes and sizes. They may have leaves or needles, berries or cones, interesting bark or fascinating flowers. They can serve as ground covers on slopes, as backdrops for flower beds, as screens to block noise, dust or landscape eyesores or even stand alone as a conversation piece. 2. Go big… or small! Just like shrubs, trees have many roles to play in a yard. While most trees are bigger than a shrub would be, over the past few years, plant developers have been working on creating more compact varieties to fit into smaller spaces. When determining whether a tree - or shrub - is right for your yard, it is important to consider how much space it will need once it is fully grown. Pruning is a way of keeping trees and shrubs shaped and healthy, not a means of forcing them into a space that is not right for them. 3. Fire in the yard. One of the new varieties this year when it comes to creating compact plants with big impact is the ‘Dwarf Burning Bush’ - in tree form. This plant has all the hardiness and stunning fall colour of a traditional Burning Bush, but packs it into a tree form. This showy specimen is great for creating a focal point in your landscape. 4. Sweet as candy. Even more compact is the new variety of ninebark ‘Lemon Candy’. This shrub’s leaves are a soft chartreuse-lime colour and are clustered densely in a short, mounding form. Like other ninebarks, this variety has the interesting “peeling” bark that gives it its name and a wonderful winter interest. 5. Keep the party rolling! An extremely reliable flowering bush is the weigela and the ‘Sonic Bloom’ series is a new breeding breakthrough. There are three colours available - pink, red and pearl - and all three show the best reblooming seen in weigela. They will bloom at least twice throughout the season and possibly even three times. 6. Never hug a barberry! Barberries are popular shrubs in this area, because they tend to be left alone by deer. Their defense mechanism is sets of small thorns along the branches. The newest addition is the barberry ‘Jade Carousel’. It is a very hardy variety, and its green foliage turns a striking scarlet orange in the fall. 7. Smell the roses. Roses try the same approach and add thorns to make themselves unattractive to deer. However, their striking blooms are more like candy for the ungulates. They are what also draws many gardeners into their spell. A newcomer on the scene is ‘Peachy Cream’, a rose with an abundance of double blooms that open in a soft peach colour and mature to cream. This is a low maintenance rose - no need to deadhead this self-cleaner. 8. Big balls of flower. One plant that brings an unbelievable show to your garden is the hydrangea with large balls or cones of blooms perched on long stems. The new white hydrangea ‘Bombshell’ has a tidy, compact growing habit, giving it more blooms per plant than any other hydrangea. ‘Vanilla Strawberry’ has cone-shaped flowers that bloom from early summer to early fall, starting out creamy white and maturing to strawberry red. 9. Climbing royalty. Clematis are the aristocrats of climbers with their masses of blooms in rich hues. Two new additions this year are ‘Cotton Candy’ with large white blooms, flushed with raspberry-red and ‘Mystic Gem’ with masses of pink flowers, edged in white. Both varieties will bloom twice, once in the spring and again in the fall. 10. True, patriot love. If your yard space allows, planting a maple tree in your yard will let you show some Canadian spirit. Maples are generally fast growers and the new ‘Autumn Radiance’ is no exception. This makes a great shade tree and is stunning in the fall with consistent and vibrant red-coloured leaves.

Houses and I was really encouraged by the discussion with participants and the feedback they provided,” says Electoral Area F Director Wendy Booth. “During the Open Houses we reviewed the proposal and that information will now be sent to all the property owners in Fairmont. I really want to continue to get feedback from the community on this proposal and hope people will fill out the survey we’ve set up.” The survey can be filled out online and copies are also available at the Cranbrook and Columbia Valley RDEK offices and on
the RDEK website. The survey deadline is Thursday, April 17, 2014. Currently, the RDEK has two flood control service areas in the Fairmont area: • Fairmont Creek Flood Control Service Area • Cold Spring Creek Flood Control Service Area These two Service Areas cover only a small portion of the Fairmont community and the RDEK is limited to providing service within these areas only. “In the past two years, we have seen the community-wide impact that debris flow
events can have and we are now proposing to amalgamate and expand the current service areas to create one large service area that covers all of Fairmont,” explains Booth. The new, expanded service area would partially fund current work and would establish reserve funds for future work. It would also pay for operation, maintenance and repairs of debris flow infrastructure. Once she has received additional feedback from the community, Director Booth will determine next steps in the process.

Report examines chronic disease in the region Submitted Recently, the BC Healthy Living Alliance (BCHLA) is releasing ‘On the Path to Better Health,’ a report that examines BC trends in chronic disease over the past decade and outlines future opportunities for prevention. Compared to ten years ago, people living across the Interior from the Cariboo to the East Kootenays have seen a rise in preventable conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Better news is that the growth rate for some conditions – (like heart disease) is slowing. The Report looks at factors that can either reduce or raise the risk for some of the most common diseases (cancer and diabetes,
heart and lung diseases) – namely: diet, activity, smoking, obesity and poverty. The findings show too many people in the Interior Health region are at risk for preventable diseases: 58% don’t eat the recommended servings of vegetables and fruit; 52% are overweight or obese; 34% are not active enough; and 21% continue to smoke. Scott McDonald, Chair of BCHLA and CEO of BC Lung Association explains, “Compared to the BC average, in the Interior we see lower rates of diabetes and hypertension, however more people here have higher rates of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases which are both caused by smoking.”
www.kootenayadvertiser.com A9 The report also flags the disproportionate burden of disease among low income British Columbians. People who live in our poorest communities are between 24% and 91% more likely to die early from cancer (24%), respiratory diseases (53%), circulatory diseases (65%) and diabetes (91%). “In addition to the human cost, chronic diseases are costly to our provincial healthcare system. Excess weight costs $612M, smoking costs $670M and inactivity costs $335M in direct healthcare costs.” says Mary Collins, Director of the BCHLA Secretariat. “There is the potential to save $2B in annual healthcare costs, if we really ramp up our efforts in prevention.” Collins adds, “The work being done through the BC Government’s Healthy Families BC initiative as well by NGOs and local governments
is a step in the right direction but we need to do more to nudge British Columbians to be healthy.” BCHLA highlights opportunities for gov-
ernment and others to build on successes, such as those made in tobacco control, but warns that the statusquo won’t be enough. Projections show
that if nothing changes there could be over 768,000 British Columbians with Type 2 Diabetes by 2032 and in the next ten years the number of
new cancer cases is expected to rise by 75%.

Hockeyville passes on Marysville Submitted The City of Kimberley would like to relay that the Marysville Arena is not one of the four finalists for Kraft Hockeyville. The announcement was revealed during second intermission of the Calgary at Phoenix hockey game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. Salmon Arm, BC and Sylvan Lake, AB are the two finalists for the West Bracket and Kingston, ON and Bedeque, PE are the two finalists for the East Bracket. As with the first round of finalists, in which there were eight each from the west and east, the two final winners will be decided by an online and phone competition. One winner from the east and one from the west will receive a $100,000 in upgrades for their arena. Then Kraft Hockeyville will have one more competition to determine a Grand Prize winner in which one will host a 2014-2015 NHL pre-season game and a visit from CBC television. The bottom two in the east and west brackets will receive $50,000 in arena upgrades and the twelve (six each from the west and east) who didn’t make this latest round, including
Marysville Arena, are all receiving $25,000 in prizes. “We are proud to have made the top 16 in the 2014 Kraft Hockeyville competition and look forward to receiving the prize for the Marysville Arena”, says Mayor Ron McRae. “Thank you to everyone who voted.”

Firefighters’ Bonspiel raises nearly $5,000 Submitted The fundraising totals are in and the annual Jaffray Firefighters’ Bonspiel has raised almost $5,000. “This was an awesome year,” says Jaffray / Baynes Lake Fire Chief Dave Boreen. “The $5,000 is just the firefighter portion and does not include revenue raised by other groups involved, like the 4H club.” 14 teams competed in the Bonspiel and the winners were as fol-

Kimberley rink takes Bronze in championship Submitted Wes Craig is wearing his second gold medal of the season after skipping his team to first place in the 2014 AMJ Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship at Duncan Curling Club. The skip from Kerry Park Curling Club will now be heading to two national curling championships for the 201314 season. Fresh from victory at the 2014 AMJ Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship, which wrapped up on Sunday, March 16, with his team of third Sarah Wark, second Miles Craig, lead Michelle Allen and
coach Roselyn Craig, Craig will be heading to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, for the national seniors. His senior team from Victoria Curling Centre, with third Blair Cusack, second Tony Anslow and lead Kevin Britt, will be in Yellowknife from March 22-30. Craig’s Mixed team, meanwhile, have a longer wait before Mixed nationals. They will represent BC at the Canadian Mixed Championship from November 8-15, 2014, in North Bay, Ontario. Team Craig managed to defeat the dominant team at the event in Duncan. Team Kopf, from the Royal City

This event would not be what it is without the support of the community and it truly was a banner year for us,” adds Boreen. The funds raised will be used by the Fire Department to purchase much needed rescue and firefighting equipment.
Curling Club, won the A event, and went undefeated into the final. But the team of Steve Kopf, Brandi Tinkler, Chase Martyn and Heather Beatty, gave up a five-ender in the eighth end at the final, sealing their fate. The third-placed team was Team Buchy, from Kimberley Curling Club, who lost to Team Craig 9-1 in the semis. Teams are made up of two men and two women playing a 10-end game of curling. The Bronze medal winning Team Buchy from the Kimberley Curling Club includes: Skip - Tom Buchy Third - Lori Buchy Second Dave Toffolo Lead - Robyn Toffolo
Horoscope for the Week: March 21 2014 Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading • 888.352.2936 sunstarastrology@gmail.com • www.sunstarastrology.com
Tip of the Week: Spring is more than in the air, it is in the atmosphere. (March 20, 9:57 am PDT.) As Earth orbits the Sun, which is perceptually experienced as the Sun orbiting the Earth, at 29.78 km/second (significantly faster than the speed of any bullet) along with its 23.4 degree tilt and an axial rotation at an average rate of 1,675 km/hour (465 meters/second), it undergoes a steady polar gyration producing our experience of the ever-changing, cyclic flow of seasons. Since we follow an elliptical orbit at an average distance of 147 million km or 150 million km when we are closest to the Sun and 152 million when furthest away, we are never at the same distance away at any given moment in a year. And ironically, when the Earth is furthest away it tilts directly towards the Sun producing Summer Solstice yet when closest it tilts exactly away from the Sun to produce Winter Solstice. Spring and Autumn Equinox are the in-between points, when the tilt is right in the middle and when day and night are of equal duration. The entire process is simply complex. Fortunately, this flow is gradual and relatively smooth. This steady yet ever changing spin, cycle, tilt, gyration, speed, angle and distance produces the ever-changing flow of seasons, weather patterns and distribution of sunlight. Photographers especially appreciate this fact. These natural cycles present an example of how significant our actual experience of the cosmos is from here on earth. It is also worth noting that life on earth evolved in this context. Although we may‘know’that the Sun is the center of the solar system, it is not a fact we have ever or will ever actually experience. Although we call it a fact, it remains an intellectual abstraction. The Earth does orbit the Sun, but that is not our experience of it, in fact just the opposite and our experience of this consuming reality is very subjective. Not only do you the observer influence the experiment, you are an integral, intrinsic and purposeful part of it. Astrology measures this fact very well and serves to bring your subjective purpose to greater objective awareness for you. Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20) The change of season is activating you. Inspired, you want to take new leads. Checking in with your partner(s), friends and/or other key players is extra important this time. Doing so may require concentrated effort. This will not always be the case but it is now. Increase cooperation efforts for best results. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) Like tremors prior to a volcanic eruption you can literally feel the energy and power percolating within. Managing your time carefully, being sure not to over commit and deciphering the line between give and receive are important strategic considerations. Acquiring specific tools and skills and calibrating both your focus and attitude are all featured themes. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) What makes you the individual you are? Now is the time to both ask the question and express the answer. You may wonder about what constitutes your most effective role and/or where your best place is in the world. Circumstances these days may be requiring that you make some very definite sacrifices. Have faith; resurrection quickly follows crucifixion. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) Your higher mind called, hopefully you received the message. Now it is time to take more deliberate action. Tensions are rising, but these may also be passions. You feel both excited and nervous. Things are shaking close to home. You want them to and are taking a lead. Cooperation from significant others is important and you are not asking…! Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) It is time to go big. Your energy levels may be wavering but are probably higher than not. You have likely been undergoing a lot of changes and it has not been easy. Still, you have a lot to say these days and you are determined to be heard. You want and perhaps need the cooperation of others. The time is right to collaborate. Let your ideas and visions flow. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) A passionate and determined cycle has begun. You are ambitious and in more ways than one. While you want to advance you also want to overcome. This cycle will require your full attention, awareness and will to act independently. While cooperation is ever wise, avoid passive attitudes of reliance and expectation. It’s your turn to bat and the team is counting on you.
Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) Something new is brewing in your relationships and it looks exciting. Whatever is happening, you are destined to play an active role. This includes a creative and assertive approach. Yet other players are also pitching to you. Though your confidences are rising, you remain somewhat cautious. This is probably a good thing. Keep a sharp eye on the ball. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) The anti is suddenly going up. Others are seeing your bid and raising it. The question now is whether to see it and raise it yourself or whether to hold or fold… walk away or run. You are allowed to bluff. Recognizing that it is all a game and seeing the beauty in it will help you decide. Consider that learning is winning and playing is life. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) You are in a playful and provocative mood. However you do it, you will challenge the status quo. You want to experience the unconventional; normal and predictable will simply not do. If you have one condition it is that there is beauty to appreciate. It could be scenery, bodies perhaps or beautiful minds at least. Spring is here and you want some excitement. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) You are in the mood to take command, or perhaps you simply want to go commando. Getting to the bottom of things, you are hardly in a conservative mood. Some passions are not so easily satisfied, like this one. You feel compelled to take some extra measures or perhaps peel off some inhibitions. All this may happen in the privacy of your home. It’s your turn to have a party. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) Many new ideas, perspectives and realizations are rolling in. Not simply of the intellectual sort, you can feel these thoughts with all your senses. You may translate them as sexual feelings. Either way, they are leading you to be more assertive. This will require more freedom than usual. Express your beauty for all to see and the lucky ones to feel. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) The drums are beating harder and louder now and so is your heart. Your ambitions are stirred and you feel excited. You are getting ready to enter new territory…again. Creating new possibilities for self-expression, the cultivation of talents and perhaps for some measurable returns is leading your focus.

The BC Government is now off-loading our recycling decisions to Toronto.
Under its new regulations, the BC Government has set up an association led by big corporations to take over the local Blue Box recycling program throughout BC. If you look closely, you’ll see that of seven board members, six are executives of Toronto-based multi-national corporations, with the seventh weighing in from Montreal. How do you like that, British Columbia? This means, unlike the current program run locally by BC municipalities, this new program will be managed not by people whose first responsibility is our local environment, but rather, their Bay St. profits. That can’t be a good thing for BC. The most perplexing thing is that we currently have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, and costs BC homeowners just
$35 a year on average. The new proposed system does not guarantee to keep our local environment as its first priority, nor does it guarantee that there won’t be job losses here in BC. It doesn’t guarantee service levels, or say anything about how big business will pass along the costs to you when you go to pick up a pizza or buy groceries. Yikes! Perhaps this is why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to sign onto the new program, calling it a “scam.” Given that, maybe it’s time you called Premier Clark to keep BC’s environmental decisions right here in BC where they belong.

World Water Day March 22, 2014 So essential to our survival, drinkable water is a resource that must be protected. That is why, in 1993, the United Nations declared that March 22 should be known as World Water Day. For the last 20 years this date has marked the occasion when people around the globe take time to reflect on the importance of drinking water and the necessity of ensuring access to it. To tackle the problem of population growth and to ensure that every human being has access to a healthy diet, both small and large gestures can make a difference. One of the easiest ways to make a positive contribution is to eat foods that require less water in the production process. For example, the production of one kilogram of beef requires 15,000 litres of water, while only 1,500 litres are required to produce one kilogram of wheat. We know that about 30 percent of the food pro-

Nobody ever said that The Gambler doesn’t go all the way to make his fans happy. Country/pop music fans in British Columbia and the United states will be extremely delighted to know that Kenny Rogers has resumed his Through the Years World tour commencing with nine mostly sold out dates in the Western U.S. which began on March 13th. Rogers had to cancel his entire Canadian tour in February, under doctor’s orders, due to an undisclosed illness. The B.C. dates that were affected included Vancouver, Penticton, and Cranbrook. The Cranbrook show has now been re-scheduled to June 11th at Western Financial Place at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the newly re-scheduled event are on sale now at the box office or by phone at 250-426-SEAT or online at www.tickets. cranbrook.ca. The opening act for the tour is Canadian country legend Charlie Major.

Huge number of young drivers distracted Submitted
In the last five years, 34 per cent of young drivers involved in crashes resulting in injuries or deaths were distracted.* Young female drivers are less often involved in crashes related to distracted driving, speed and impaired driving compared to young males. However, young female drivers involved in crashes were distracted nearly three times more than they sped and almost ten times more than they drove impaired.* “Distracted driving is a serious matter and is now the second leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities on B.C. highways as well as a top factor in youth crashes,” said Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton. “Don’t let your memory of high school involve a tragic accident – please put your phone away and focus on the road so that you can get to your destination safely.” To help B.C. high school students understand the consequences of taking risks behind the wheel, ICBC kicked off its road safety speaker program today at Panorama Ridge Secondary in Surrey with a new road safety speaker, Heidi Cave. “Car crashes remain the number one preventable cause of death for young people in B.C.,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “ICBC road safety speakers are reaching out to students across the province to help them understand the importance of safe driving and strengthen their decision-making skills.” “Young drivers are less experienced, more likely to take risks and tend to be more easily distracted by passengers and electronic devices,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “These are all factors in the high rate of youth crashes on our roads. Our speakers are able to connect with teens and help them realize the life-changing consequences of taking risks while driving and think twice about it.” For the past 17 years, ICBC road safety speakers have been sharing their stories with more than 50,000 B.C. high school students every year. Heidi Cave will be speaking to high school students throughout the Lower Mainland this spring. In 1998, Heidi’s life changed when her car was struck by a reckless driver going more than 100 km/hr. Heidi’s subsequent bat-

I am quite sure most of you have seen the rather large red Dragon that has been flying over the south side of Cranbrook for the better part of 4 months. I am looking for someone to: lure said dragon away from south side of town, force said dragon to land, slay said dragon in whatever way you see fit. No actual pay, but experience of one million points that should get you a few level ups. Please note that I’m not talking about the green Dragon that frequents the area from time to time, she and I have an agreement. To Who It May Concern: To the gentleman who broke into my yard, beat up my son and stole my two little dogs, if you could bring my dogs back, no charges will be laid. I will even throw in a small reward. If you are any kind of a man, you will do what is right.

Canadian Forest Products Ltd. (Canfor) is advertising for public review amendments to its Kootenay Region’s Forest Stewardship Plans (FSP) prepared under the Forest and Range Practices Act. Canfor has timber harvesting rights within the Rocky Mountain Forest District that extends from Parson to the north, east to the Alberta border, west to the height of the Purcell Mountains and south to US border. The proposed amendment to the Radium FSP #17 is the addition of new Forest Development Units (FDU’s) in the Invermere TSA, inclusion of Shuswap Indian Band’s Replaceable Forest License (RFL) A90310 and the addition of the Akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) as co-signator. The proposed amendment to Canfor’s (formerly Tembec’s) Kootenay FSP, is to include the AFN and St-Mary’s Indian Band (SMIB) as co-signators, the addition of the AFN’s Non-replaceable Forest License (NRFL) A88225 and SMIB’s NRFL A84738 . There are no changes to the results and strategies of the FSP’s. TIMBER SUPPLY AREA: Invermere TSA GEOGRAPHIC AREA OF NEW FDU’S: Bugaboo Creek, Kindersley Creek, Dutch Creek, Cross River, East Columbia, Nine Mile/Moscow Creek and Doctor Creek. PROPOSED ACTIVITIES IN FDU’S: Harvesting, road building and silviculture activities to facilitate the harvest of timber including infested and damaged timber from beetle, windthrow or fire. The plan specifies results or strategies that are consistent with: 1) objectives set by government in the Kootenay Boundary Higher Level Plan, and 2) objectives prescribed by the Forest and Range Practices Act or otherwise established by government. The FSP also specifies measures for preventing the introduction or spread of invasive plants and to mitigate the loss of natural range barriers. Finally, the FSP specifies the regeneration date, free growing height and stocking standards necessary to actively establish and reforest harvested areas. The FSP is available for public review and written comment at: Canfor Woodlands Office - Radium Radium Plaza building, 7585 Main St. West, Radium Hot Springs, BC. Or Canfor Woodlands Office – Cranbrook 1000 Industrial Rd #1, Cranbrook, BC Persons may review the FSP during regular business hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, From March 14, 2014 to May 13, 2014 A Canfor representative will be available to discuss the proposed plans and receive comments. MARCH 22 cRaNbRook sNoWMobIle clUb Family days 11am-4pm at the clubs cabin. everyone Welcome. Free burgers,
Hugs: To the guys at D&H Service. Dave and Josh, thank you so much for helping me out with my van. Your customer service is amazing. You guys are the BEST! Slugs: To the woman in the black 4 door Jeep who drove past us on 3rd street south on Tuesday March 4. You didn’t have the decency or common courtesy to slow down or move over. You sped past us as we were walking to the hockey game, and you splashed us bad enough that we had to return home to change our clothes. We see you drive by our house frequently, we thought the people in our neighborhood were a bit more courteous. Hugs: To the two angels (well, they seemed heaven-sent to me) in the pickup who brought some sandbags to my house in Park Royal area Friday night. Not sure if you were City workers or firemen, but thanks so much. Hugs also to the fireman who answered the after-hours City phone line and arranged the delivery. You guys are the best! Hugs: To our thoughtful neighbour, who plowed driveways and the entire end of the cul-de-sac on Mt. Proctor Place after the heavy snowfall at the beginning of March. We all really appreciated your willingness to take charge and get’er done. Thanks!! Hugs: To the City of Cranbrook for providing Sand Bags, free of charge. We certainly could use them. Hugs: A great big Hug to the man who used his quad to do the whole sidewalk on Wattsville many times this winter. The neighborhood appreciates you whoever you are! Hugs: To Mainroads. Thanks for doing such a wonderful job maintaining our rural roads in particular around Bull River this past winter. Hugs: Giant HUGS to the people/ customers that pick up after themselves in retail stores! Thank You! You know who you are.........a very small minority..........

I’m afraid my memory of who was there is a little hazy but I do know that there were fellows who stayed to help a complete stranger from the time I fell until the ambulance arrived from Cranbrook. A long, cold wait for everyone. I can’t express to you what a difference your being there made. Thank you all for you help. Hugs: Many hugs to the three young, caring & helpful men that filled some sandbags for a very desperate me on March 6 at the Public Works yard. When I asked these men if I could have some sandbags they set aside the filling of their own sandbags and filled some for me. Those kind men saved our basement from flooding. I can’t thank them enough. Hugs: Thank you to the hard working folks at the City of Cranbrook City Hall Public Works dept. My pooling water and snow issue got quickly corrected in the cul-de-sac. Yes, we do need more storm drains out here (just saying.. :-) Hugs: A very large warm hug to Yvette Relkoff, Fort Steele Heritage Town’s education coordinator. Yvette oversees Pro-D camps for a fun and educational day. Fridays are also our scheduled day to help a senior friend with his shopping & other needs. His needs were more than usual, thus we were ¾ of an hour late getting the boys from Fort Steele. Yvette stayed with the boys until we arrived. Thank you Yvette, you are one in a million. Hugs: To the Kootenay Ice players who shared a meal with some of their fans, young and old. Thanks to the Heritage for a wonderful meal and to all who helped for an awesome evening! Hugs: To the New Board Members of the Cranbrook Health Care Auxiliary, recently overwhelmingly elected by the largest membership turnout in CHCA history.
