The best eating in the Boundary was happening at the Kettle Wildlife Association Annual Banquet and Awards last Saturday night. Members and non-members alike provided a variety of wild and domestic meats. On the menu were turkey, mule deer roast, cougar, elk, pepperoni, moose roast, smoked salmon, whitetail salami, bear sausage, elk hamburger, ham and more. The dinner was prepared by Chef Bryan Rufiange from the Spruce Grove Fish and Wildlife Club in Alberta. Rufiange is a friend of Gerald and Vicki Feist in Rock Creek and since their daughter Tina Hesketh was in charge of the dinner, he volunteered his services. “It’s a fundraiser—you have to help,” he told the Times. Eight 4-H members from the Borderline Club helped serve and clean up. “We love to help,” said senior member Joey Rankin. A list of 46 generous sponsors once again gave the KWA banquet one of the best raffle tables of the year. There were also some excellent prizes available through a silent auction. This year there were only six trophies (usually there are a dozen). Association director Guy Owens said game is getting scarce and there weren’t a lot of entries. One wallet was all that thieves made off with after breaking into the Greenwood Saloon two weeks ago. On Wednesday, March 5 Midway RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter into the saloon, reported Cpl. Kevin Christensen. Unknown suspect(s) broke in through the front door window and then stole a wallet once inside, he said. “It is believed that the alarm may have scared off the thieve(s) before they could get away with anything else,” Christensen said in a release, adding that there were similar break and enters that occurred in Castlegar and Christina Lake the same night. “Police have seized evidence from each of the crime scenes and it is believed that the same suspect(s) are responsible for all the break and enters,” Christensen reported. He said police have suspects in mind but if anyone has information regarding these break and enters, contact the Midway RCMP or Crimestoppers. According to Kevin Thorlakson of the Greenwood Saloon, his wallet was later recovered lying on the highway. The cash was missing but his identification was still there.
Simple diet for diabetics SID KETTNER, MD Submitted
There are many devastating effects of diabetes II, “Mother of All Diseases.” We now know that over 90 per cent of cases of diabetes II are caused by lifestyle choices—how we eat and how we move—we can prevent, disarm and even reverse this condition. The findings of Harvard Study of 80,000 nurses showed that the risk of developing diabetes was up to 40 times higher in those who were obese. Yet we treat this disease with insulin and pills that increase the appetite, which leads to more weight. Studies at Harvard on 200,000 enrollees followed for one decade showed that just four ounces of unprocessed red meat—steak, pork, hamburger— would increase the risk by 20 per cent and only two ounces of processed meat—bacon, hot dogs, sausage— could do the same. Yet even just one serving of a vegetarian dish containing whole grains could decrease the risk by 35 per cent. Amazing! The St. Louis Valley Study with 134 pre-diabetic subjects followed over three years showed that sugar intake
was not the main culprit but that a daily increase of 40 grams of fat in the diet (about the amount in a bag of potato chips) could result in a six-fold increased risk of getting full blown diabetes. So fighting the enemy, fat intake and its resulting obesity, is the strategy to decrease our risk. But now—more good news! Even if one already has diabetes, it can be reversed. In 1955, Dr. Singh dropped the fat intake to 11 per cent of the total calorie intake of 80 diabetics and within six weeks 50 were off insulin and another 18 were off in 18 weeks, giving a success rate of 85 per cent! We need to decrease our intake of fat, refined foods and animal products (meat, eggs, dairy, cheese) drastically and instead enjoy the optimal diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes with their high nutritional value and high fiber content. We need to increase our exercise. Work closely with your doctor to decrease or even stop your medications, but don’t do this on your own. You’re sitting in an office across from a mortgage loans officer. It could be a bank, a credit union, or another lender. You’ve signed all the papers for your mortgage. Now comes a question that you haven’t thought about, “Would you like to have mortgage insurance?” “What’s that?” you ask innocently. “If you die, we’ll pay off your mortgage so your spouse or family doesn’t have to worry about it.” You, like many others, are tempted to respond, “Where do I sign?” But wait a minute! Think about what you’re paying for before you sign up. The major difference between a life insurance policy and mortgage insurance from a lender is control. With a life insurance policy, you decide who the beneficiary will be. With mortgage insurance, the financial institution is the beneficiary and gets all of the death benefit. Your appointed beneficiary gets to choose how to spend the tax-free death benefit from your life insurance policy. They could pay down the mortgage or other debts, or choose to invest the proceeds rather than pay off a low interest mortgage. These options don’t exist when your mortgage lender controls the proceeds. Many homeowners don’t realize that mortgage insurance is often what’s called “decreasing term insurance.” The amount you owe on your mortgage goes down as you make payments on the principal. At the same time, the death benefit goes down by the same amount. But your mortgage insurance premiums stay the same, so you’re actually getting less and less for your money every time you make a mortgage payment.
Here’s another point worth considering. Many homeowners will change mortgage lenders during the time they’re paying off their home, especially if they can get a lower interest rate somewhere else. If you take your mortgage to another company, in most cases, you lose your mortgage insurance and have to apply again at the new company. If you have a life insurance policy to protect your mortgage, and a better rate exists at another lender, you can transfer your mortgage to that company knowing your insurance remains in force. You don’t need to re-apply, and you’re protected from the danger of losing your insurance because of a change in your health. I recently read an article that pointed to lower premiums as being a good reason to choose mortgage lender insurance over life insurance. It said that it is much cheaper to cover your mortgage with a bank policy rather than an insurance company’s policy. This is not always the case as I see in my line of work. Depending on the policyholder’s age and the amount of coverage, individual life insurance coverage will often come in cheaper than the lenders mortgage insurance. The final choice is up to you. Weighing your options will help you get the most out of your money and put you in control! Soccer season gearing up Boundary Youth Soccer Association is getting ready for another great season of soccer. This is a free program for children aged four and under called Kicks for kids (K4K) as well as age divisions for the older kids. Coaches are also needed for the K4K and U7 (five- and six-year-olds) divisions. Free training is provided and coaching these little ones is a ton of fun and very rewarding. Hoping goals thrive B.C.’s Environment Minister Mary Polak introduced legislation last week that will update and replace B.C.’s century-old Water Act with the new Water Sustainability Act. This has been coming down the pipe since 2009. Graham Watt, project coordinator for the Kettle River Management Plan told the Times the devil will be in the details. “The act introduces some ideas about pricing, about ground water regulations, about water sustainability plans, local development. But it doesn’t spell out exactly how it is going to work. “The regulations will come in the coming year and will come into effect in 2015 at about this time. They have also introduced a discussion paper on water pricing, a step that Watt calls exciting. “That the provincial government actually wants to hear back on first reading is kind of unprecedented— they always just charge through.” “I am hoping that they will have similar timelines on the regulations where the devil is in the details,” said Watt. Watt said he was pleasantly surprised by the candor, open mindedness and sharing at the last week’s Sustaining the Flow public input session for the Kettle River Management Plan held in Midway. “There are some entrenched opinions in the communities about a lot of these issues that we have talked about today. “Issues that have divided families even, water metering for instance. And here people are talking about them—sometimes talking around them—but talking about these issues in a way it will help the advisory group develop a plan that will resonate with people.” Let’s hope the goals and vision specific to the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan are allowed to thrive under the new provincial legislation.

The year of the Mustang The Hagerty Classic Alley at the Vancouver International Auto Show perhaps should be called Mustang Alley, in what is the Chinese Year of the Horse. There are two Mustangs on display, including this red 1966 Ford Mustang, along with a 1956 Chevrolet Nomad resto-mod and a 1966 Plymouth Satellite. The second Mustang is a 1965 Mustang convertible, restored to an as new condition and is steeped in Vancouver history. A beautifully restored 1966 Mustang Hardtop will be auctioned off from the show’s Redline Stage on Saturday, March 29. That day 50 Mustangs, celebrating 50 years of the model, will be displayed on the Convention Centre Concourse.

The bank must have seized it due to an unpaid balance. As before, I panicked. I didn’t idnn’t want to get involved in this right now. w. Sure, S I sold him the car, but how was I supposed seed to know it had
a lien on it? I realized the wholesaler* had scammed me! If that fellow had asked for a CarProof history report or even a provincial lien search, I’d be the one screaming. Over the next several hours, I kept letting my phone go to voicemail – I couldn’t bear speaking to the young man. I knew I had to switch phones again. I felt a bit ashamed. But I needed to be selfish about this. At this point, the best thing for me was cash. And lots of it. *Wholesaler – Vehicle sellers may call themselves auto brokers or wholesalers to sound legitimate and cheaper. But if they’re selling to private buyers, they must be licensed as a dealer. Like any curber - an individual posing as a private seller but selling vehicles as a business – wholesalers and brokers offer none of the protection the law provides for purchases from a Vehicle Sales Authority licensed dealer. Walt learned that lesson, sson, but his buyer paid the price.

Citizens honoured for long service
Citizens on Patrol (COP) met for lunch at the Bored Room Bistro on Wednesday, March 12 to recognize members with longservice records. Midway resident and village councillor Marguerite Rotvold was the longest-serving member in attendance. She was given a certificate and a lapel pin observing her 15 years as a member of the BC Citizens Patrol Network.
She was the first member from Midway. Cpl. Kevin Christensen was on hand to present the awards, which were signed by Caroline Sinclair, executive director of the B.C Crime Prevention Association. Others recognized with pins and certificates were Wolfgang Schmidt, Wayne and Allisen Sargent (all for 10 years service), Ken
and Anne Mathie for seven years, and Paul Brandon and Ron Cooper for three years’ service. COP in the Boundary began in 1991 when a group formed in Greenwood. The group now meets on the second Wednesday of each month. Sargent is president and secretary, Anne Mathie is the treasurer and Ken Mathie is the captain. Current membership sits
at 11, with the majority of them being from Midway. “We are the eyes and ears of the RCMP,“ said Sargent. The group conducts speed watch, range patrol and vehicle patrols through the communities of the West Boundary, making sure businesses are

I don’t question the necessity for occasional in-camera meetings of local governing councils where sensitive or privacy issues may be of concern, but I suspect they may be overused. There’s no way of knowing if that’s the case though, because they’re secret, and that makes them a pretty convenient way to get around the accountability issue that can be so inconvenient for some who govern in a democracy. There is a solution. If minutes are taken at incamera meetings (as they should be) and kept
on record (as they also should be) then at some point, when the issues they were held to discuss are no longer considered sensitive, the records of those meetings should be made public. Just knowing that those records exist could have a sobering effect and reduce the possibility of rash and irresponsible decision-making. Transparency is central to any democratic institution. The people we elect should not be having secret meetings, making secret decisions that effect the people who elected them. When you remove scrutiny from the decision-making process, accountability is gone; that’s why bank robbers wear masks. Curtis Chamberlain, Greenwood

March 26 is Purple Day
Kettle Valley resident Jennifer Waygood wants to begin a conversation in the community about epilepsy. March is Epilepsy Month and this is the first year that the Government of Canada has officially proclaimed March 26 as Purple Day. Purple Day actually began in 2008 when Cassidy Megan, a child from Nova Scotia—at the time only nine years old— was motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy. Her goal was to get people talking about epilepsy in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they are not alone. Epilepsy is far more common that most people realize. It can occur at any age, is not contagious, and is rarely fatal. In Canada approximately 300,000 people have epilepsy and worldwide approximately 65 million people have epilepsy (more than multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson’s combined) but many in the general public know little about it and much of what they do know is incorrect. A seizure occurs when the normal electrical balance in the brain is lost. The brain’s nerve cells misfire, either firing when they shouldn’t or not firing when they should. Seizures are the physical effects of these sudden, brief, uncontrolled bursts of abnormal electrical activity. The type of seizure depends on how many cells fire and which area of the brain is involved. The condition can result in either convulsive or non-convulsive seizures. Treatment options include antiepileptic drugs, surgery, vagus nerve stimulation (a device that is surgically implant-
ed and delivers a mild electrical current to the vagus nerve) or a ketogenic diet (high in fat, low in carbohydrates). Jennifer says she’s had seizures all over the community; however, it is a disability that is usually invisible. Apart from the seizures, Jennifer is a completely normal 38-year-old wife and mother of three. In spite of her epilepsy she earned a four-year Bachelor of Social Work Degree at Okanagan University College in 2001. Jennifer’s epilepsy was diagnosed two days before her 16th birthday but she believes her seizures actually started when she was eight or nine. “My seizures have changed as I got older. They were more visual seizures when I was a child. I didn’t know what to say or how to express the fact that I was seeing hallucinations and floating things in the air. If I asked my sister, ‘Did you see that? She’d say, see what?’ So I knew it was just me that was seeing these things. It was really difficult to really get out into the open.” Eventually her seizures changed and became more physical and developed into grand mal seizures. That’s where they’ve stayed every since. “Most of the research shows that as you age your seizures are supposed to ease and unfortunately that’s not what’s happening with mine—they are just getting worse.” “I am on an awful lot of anti-epileptic medications,” she told the Times. “There isn’t a single one that I haven’t tried. “They have given me the option of surgery but I am not really keen on it. I haven’t been able to speak to the others who have undergone this surgery so

I am a little leery and they can’t promise that it will either reduce or remove any of the seizures. “The only thing they can promise me is that it is going to reduce, if not take away complete vision in my right eye. The fact that they won’t let me talk to people who had this done doesn’t show me that these were bright outcomes.” So despite experiencing an average of three seizures a week, she has backed off of the surgery option. “They’ve given me the option of vagus nerve stimulation but it’s only something that they have proven for children. Basically they can’t seem to find something or a combination of things that work.” For the public she suggests going online to learn how to properly deal with someone having a seizure—http://www. epilepsymatters.com has first-aid information for both convulsive and nonconvulsive seizures. There is an old myth that you should put something in a person’s mouth during a seizure to keep them from swallowing their tongue. This is not true and can be dangerous. “I’ve had people stick all kinds of things in my mouth and that is totally wrong.” If somebody is witnessing someone having a seizure they need to be assisted to the ground and protected from hitting their head or injuring themselves. If the seizure lasts for more than five minutes, call 911. Place them in the recovery position (on their side) and make sure they are not slapping anything. Once the seizure has ended, pat their back gently and continue talking to them, letting them know that there is somebody there. For those who do have epilepsy she stresses the importance of always wearing a medic alert bracelet and carrying an up-to-date list of all medications. “Epilepsy just needs to be brought to light and understood a little bit better. It’s a neurological problem that we have called epilepsy, and a symptom of the epilepsy is the seizures. Other than that we are really no different than anybody else.” The B.C. Epilepsy Society has epilepsy awareness and educational materials available online at www.bcepilepsy.com. “I definitely want this to get out because I know there are plenty of families with children who have some form of epilepsy and I want to help the community understand,” explained Jennifer.

Heads: you get a worse recycling program. Tails: you get to pay more for it.
The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less. Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess. The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that profits will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC. And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?
Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper, or pretty much anything else that comes in a package, businesses will be passing their increased costs on to you. How much more? Well, nobody’s saying. Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?” It’s time to contact Premier Clark and ask her.
