The Lake Country Chamber of Commerce is stepping into unchartered territory, promoting local businesses with its inaugural Business After Hours Tradeshow in Lake Country.

Featuring 40 booths and five different presentation and workshops, the Business After Hours Tradeshow in Lake Country is taking place today (March 19)

from 4 to 8 p.m. at Winfield Memorial hall.

“This has been done at other chambers quite successfully,” said Lake Country chamber executive director Corrinne Cross. “We were looking at ways to promote the businesses in Lake Country and the chamber. The reaction was so positive that it was a huge success even before it started.”

In fact the reaction amongst the busi-

ness community in Lake Country was so swift, booths were sold out in no time and the chamber is now looking at a larger venue next year if it hosts a similar event.

“We put the word out on a Tuesday and I think by the Thursday we were 80 per cent sold out,” said Cross. “It’s been very well embraced. We’re actually thinking next year to do it a little later in the year so that we can use the arena (after the ice is

A valley-wide business after hours event moves around between the eight different chambers in the region and Lake Country has also held

events at UBCO, a small shop Saturday event in Lake County as well as business walks, getting input from businesses on how things are going and what can be improved upon.

However the tradeshow, bringing local businesses together under one roof in Lake Country is a new concept.

“The benefit to doing this is that our business-

es get out there and get a chance to show off what they do best,” said Cross.

“We’re looking at this for promotion and for marketing the chamber and the local businesses and helping them be successful.”

Admission to the event is free and there are lots of door prizes as well as a concession hosted by the Rotary Club. The event goes tonight until 8 p.m.

Hospital auxiliary raising funds for new CT scanner The Winfield Hospital Auxiliary has partnered with hospital auxiliaries around the region to begin raising funds for a much needed CT Scanner for Kelowna General Hospital’s emergency department.

A relatively small group of 11 fun-loving and hard-working members, the Winfield Auxiliary has raised $115,000 over the past several years and will now add its considerable fundraising prowess to

Old Friends save lives rescuing horses Ralston sentenced for shooting

with stemming the flow of blood. Between them they administered a general anasthetic in Appleflats’ indoor arena and bandaged the leg.

Although it looked grim, Delia made it through the trauma and as winter progressed her shape changed, which is when vets discovered her pregnancy. Dr. Alec Wales came around every other day to examine her leg and check bandages. There was no sense of the probable delivery date since it was unknown when she had bred.

In September of the following year, twins were born—one stillborn, the other only lasting 36 hours. Tragic for the twins but Delia recovered to the extent she sometimes gallops in the field when she is turned out at what is now her permanent home at Appleflats.

While Delia was healing, Peedee came along.

He is a mini horse, a spotted stallion, who was

starving and neglected. He went into the pen next to Delia.

Volunteer Lorraine Pelletier, who had worked with many horses over the years, spent a great deal of time socializing Peedee, getting weight on him and training him. He started socializing with Delia and finally found a home as a mascot for the Spotted-Spa doggie daycare.

Then Hazelnut arrived—a mini horse who was morbidly obese. Volunteers worked to get her weight under control, and she became a companion for an older, retired trail horse who also had weight control issues in the Kootenays.

David is another character. A thoroughbred with seven years of racing history, he was bought at auction but was found to have severe gastric problems. He has now survived colic surgery and wanders at will throughout Appleflats.

David is currently being ridden gently and hasn’t

had colic in two years.

Like Delia, he has found a permanent home at Appleflats.

Molly the cart pony came to the farm from a riding school. She has conformation issues which made her unhappy as a schooling pony because riders on her back caused her pain, and pulling on her face made her pretty grumpy.

In a moment of inspiration, Deborah put a toboggan behind her and she seemed not to mind pulling, so experiments progressed with a cart.

Molly has now pulled her cart at three graduations, a wedding and a show at the Interior Provincial Exhibition.

Then Savannah arrived. Approximately four years old, she is a beautiful palomino Tennessee walking horse.

She had lameness issues and was about to be put down until the society took responsibility for her. Helen, the barn manager, spent a lot of time with her, teaching her to walk on a lead shank, accept having a blanket put on, and play with a ball. Her lameness seems to have disappeared and her weight is good. The society hopes to find her a permanent home in the spring.

KATHRYN BATTRUM This year is indeed the year of the horse, although horses are celebrated daily at Appleflats Farm and Organic Orchard on Davidson Road in Lake Country.

Dr. Deborah Battrum has been working through the Old Friends Society for more than 10 years to help rescue and temporarily house horses that are in desperate need of loving care. The society is a not-for-profit enterprise and is working on getting charitable organization status. It is run by horse-loving volunteers.

Appleflats has been a temporary home to many horses, including some who were dislocated during the Kelowna wildfire of 2003.

One of the most tragic stories involves a horse named Delia. She came to Appleflats as a starving, pregnant 22-yearold mare with a cut to her right front leg that went to the bone which had been left for at least three months without treatment. It was in her diminished physical capacity that she was unable to defend herself from a stallion which had been let out in the same pasture, and that is how she got pregnant with twins, for the first time, at her advanced age.

At Appleflats, while staff were trying to clear up the lesion on her leg an artery burst. Luckily, veterinarian Dr. Sarah Greenwood, a member of Old Friends who volunteers with the society, offered to help. She called in Dr. Theresa Jacobson for assistance

A CAT hitches a ride on Serenade’s back at the Apple-

flats Farm and Organic Orchard in Lake Country, home of the Old Friend’s Society, where they have rescued and saved many horses, such as Savannah, standing behind Serenade.

KATHY MICHAELS A Lake Country man was sentenced to three years in prison a week ago Monday for shooting a former friend in their shared home.

Judge Anne Wallace sentenced Kenneth Ralston, 62, to two years in prison for aggravated assault and tacked on a mandatory third year for using a firearm.

Ralston was arrested March 3, 2011, for shooting longtime friend Michael Anderson in his right leg—an act to which he pleaded guilty last October.

Anderson, who was 44 at the time of the shooting, underwent surgery to save his leg. According to Crown Counsel Deborah Pope, it was a life changing event that left him bitter, unable to support himself, and in poor physical health.

Pope explained the 2011 altercation boiled down to an outstanding debt of $800. “February

went by, and (Anderson) couldn’t pay rent… then in March he failed to pay rent and that caused hard feelings between Mr. Ralston and Mr. Anderson,” said Pope.

Anderson had been making a living by selling firewood, but a recent run-in with the Ministry of Forests left him barred from that work, so his rent went unpaid.

The situation came to a head on the morning of March 3, 2011, when Ralston found Anderson cutting up old furniture for a fire pit. Anderson claimed he was clearing up. Ralston said Anderson was burning up his patio furniture.

The two got into a brief argument but went their separate ways shortly thereafter.

Later, however, things went seriously awry.

Anderson’s statement indicated that Ralston burst into their shared home through the sliding glass doors, holding a rifle. “’You better

pay rent or get out, or I’ll shoot you,’” said Ralston, according to Anderson’s statement.

Anderson tried to explain he would soon pay his debt as he had secured work up north.

But, within “two minutes” he found himself on the ground, in shock from a gunshot wound.

Statements from all sides indicate that Ralston was instantly remorseful, calling 911 and crying into Anderson’s lap. He was co-operative with police, who indicated that alcohol was involved.

While the shooting and events leading to it matched from either side, the question was whether the gun was intentionally fired.

Judge Wallace noted that Ralston should have known better than to bring a loaded weapon to a disagreement. In sentencing, she pointed out that booze was likely the most significant factor in the crime.

Fire on Powley damages homes A dozen Lake Country residents spent Sunday night in hotels after six townhomes were damaged and two vehicles destroyed in a fire on Powley Court.

No one was injured in the blaze which began around noon Sunday in a vehicle, spread to a second vehicle before jumping to a townhome.

One townhome suf-

fered considerable fire damage, while the five neighboring units were also damaged.

The investigation is continuing into the cause of the fire.

Final planning for new bus route A new transit route between the Lakes subdivision and the Town Centre of Lake Country will begin later this year.

Council heard from B.C. Transit about the Central Okanagan Tran-

sit Future Plan and Lake Country’s role in it. The new route will start Sept.

2 with an introductory level of service, weekdays only during peak periods on a 30-minute schedule using a small commun-

ity bus.

Planning continues with the next steps to finalize the route and location of the terminus and bus stops, and confirm the operational running time and schedule.

Green machine gathers in B.C.

anada’s sleek, imported green propaganda machine rolled into the capital last week for a couple of days of meetings.

You wouldn’t have heard about it, because they didn’t stage any protests or press conferences.

Instead they met quietly with selected reporters as well as politicians from both sides of the aisle.

They didn’t invite me for some reason, but from what I can gather, it was a friendly networking session.

When I speak of our U.S.-directed environmental movement, many people still don’t know what I mean. They see the sign-waving on TV and assume it’s all spontaneous, driven by passionate volunteers. Nuke the Whales for Jesus, as we used to joke in the 1970s.

It’s an industry now, and as with our automotive industry, Canada is a branch plant of the U.S. The Victoria event was an annual conference called Organizing

by Tides Canada. Thanks mainly to the work of B.C. researcher Vivian Krause, this offshoot of the U.S. Tides Foundation now at least identifies itself while it pulls B.C.’s political strings.

Organizing for Change currently includes Ecojustice, Greenpeace, Sierra Club B.C., ForestEthics Advocacy, ForestEthics Solutions, Georgia Strait Alliance, Dogwood Initiative, Pembina Institute, West Coast Environmental Law, Wildsight and Seattle-based Conservation Northwest.

Tides is itself a front

for wealthy charitable foundations based mostly in Seattle and California, funded by billionaires who see “saving” B.C. as their personal eco-project.

Their hired activists met with Environment Minister Mary Polak to discuss her just-introduced Water Sustainability Act. This was to demand heavy fees and choking regulations on water used for “fracking,” that nefarious gas drilling technology so demonized in fake documentaries and celebrity protests.

Tides no longer attempts to hide its strategy of targeting energy development in B.C. and Alberta. Its tactics are well known, too. Environmentalists need high-profile wins, and the economic pain is best inflicted outside of the U.S., the biggest polluter in world history.

Organizing for Change’s stated priorities for the year are the “last stand of the Great Bear Rainforest,” the “Sacred Headwaters” and

the Water Sustainability Act. Professional protesters are mainly just taking credit for the 2012 buyback of Shell’s coalbed gas licences around the headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers. Tahltan Central Council declared that territory theirs in 1910, and having pros roll in with slogans and graphics wasn’t exactly crucial to the outcome.

Their greatest marketing success so far is the Great Bear Rainforest, which is continually portrayed as being in peril from hunting, logging and of course, oil and gas development.

One of the documents Krause unearthed is a 2008 plan entitled “Tar Sands Campaign Strategy 2.1” that has proven remarkably prophetic. As Greenpeace, Sierra and ForestEthics were negotiating the 2007 Great Bear land use plan, other network members were preparing to “raise the negatives” and market Alberta as a unique threat to planetary in-

tegrity.

I’ve written before about the distortions and evasions required to present such a fossil fuel fairy tale. Suffice it to say that while we have busloads of protesters in B.C., you don’t see them in those benevolent petro-states Angola, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Kuwait or Algeria. They’re not saving the whole planet, just the safe and lucrative parts.

And as I mentioned after the protester-staged Neil Young concert tour, it’s amazing how American oil and gas interests and Alaska oil tankers remain invisible to this sophisticated network.

NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert met with the green machine too.

He wants all of B.C.’s groundwater mapped and measured deep into the Earth’s crust. That should take a while.

You Happy, but Doesn’t; What Shouldn’t Make You Happy, but Does.

In brief, she suggests that happiness depends on saying Yes as often as possible; the secret to success is learning to when to say No. Of course that’s an overly simplistic formula.

Saying Yes to everything won’t leave you time to enjoy anything. But like all simplistic formulas, it contains a seed of truth.

To mix my metaphors a little, take Sonia’s advice with a grain of salt.

Saying Yes to opportunities—especially those that may lie slightly outside your comfort zone—leads to a greater range of experiences.

A friend tells me that she has decided to try one thing outside her comfort zone, every week.

The best thing for inflamed thumb and wrist is to treat early

humbs Up! What do hitchhiking, playing video games, starting a car, and opening a pickle jar have in common? They all require the use of our thumb. As humans we are one of the only species with an opposable thumb; however, we often forget how important this little digit really is.

Try to imagine what life would be like without the use of your thumb. An injury known as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis can lead to pain and decreased movement of the thumb and limit the ability to grip, lift, pinch, open doors, type and perform all activities involving the thumb.

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis is a condition where the lining around two tendons in the thumb and wrist becomes inflamed. These

Inflammation around the tendons for these muscles can occur from either a traumatic injury or from repetitive movements that cause small micro-injuries, eventually leading to inflammation.

Any person who uses their thumb and wrist repetitively throughout the day may be at risk of developing this condition. New moms who

are often lifting their babies, office workers who type for a large portion of their day, workers who hold heavy equipment in their hands and perform twisting movements of their wrist, and people who play golf or racket sports like tennis, are often at a high risk as well.

If you have this condition, thumb and wrist movements can be painful and the range of movement of the thumb and wrist can be limited. This pain may cause people to avoid using the affected hand. However, because we have two hands, people often compensate with the other one, letting the pain persist and the condition go untreated.

The best thing you can do if you have De Quervain’s tensosynovitis is to treat it before it gets out of control.

days, start your treatment by applying an ice pack or placing your hand in an ice bath for 10 min-

Controlling the initial inflammation can often prevent future problems.

If repetitive wrist and thumb movements are part of your daily life, try avoiding these movements. If it is impossible to avoid them, you

can wear a thumb splica (thumb brace) that supports your thumb and prevents you from moving it in the aggravating positions. This allows your thumb muscles to relax and inhibits the tendons from moving through the inflamed lining. Early on, avoiding irritating movements in combination with inflammation control can help to stop the pain in its tracks.

If you do not address this problem in the early stages, the inflammation can lead to scar tissue formation and a narrowing of the tendon lining. If this happens, it can become very difficult to move your thumb and wrist due to stiffness and pain.

If your symptoms are worsening, it is best to see a health care professional who can help to diagnose your problem, as other joint conditions such as osteoarthritis and

She’s learning to say Yes. It stands to reason: If you keep saying No to everything that comes along, you’re going to get stuck in a deep and lonely rut. Which is hardly a formula for happiness.

As an old saying goes: “At our deathbeds, we’re more likely to regret the things we didn’t do than the things we did.”

Saying Yes may also mean saying No to doing things the same old way.

Years ago, a youth group at our church created a banner. The Seven Last Words of the Church, they suggested, were “We’ve Never Done It That Way Before.”

That doesn’t mean saying Yes indiscriminately. Armed robbery and hard drugs can have distinctly unhappy consequences. Without adequate training, so can skydiving, rock climbing, scuba diving and whitewater kayaking.

Similarly with saying No. Warren Buffett is reputed to have said: “The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘No’ to almost everything.”

They’re not negative – they’re just obsessive about their goals.

Author Malcolm Gladwell popularized

the idea that experts have to put 10,000 hours into practicing their skill— whether that skill involves playing the cello or outsmarting the stock market. The only way to get those 10,000 hours is to say No to a lot of distractions.

The key is knowing when to say Yes and when to say No. Saying Yes to every extra-marital affair will certainly lead to an unhappy marriage. Saying No to every financial risk will never make you another War-

How do you strike a balance? Know the difference between your goals. If your goal is success in a specific field, say No to everything that will distract you. If your goal is a full and happy life, say Yes as often as possible.

Protect the time you need for your priority; open up the rest of your time as much as possible.

To quote Sonia Lyubomirsky’s research again, the happiest people are “those fortun-

A resident of Holiday Park, Orlick, now 75, was living in Calgary when he received his diagnosis. But he quickly found out that he and his wife weren’t alone.

“We had so much help with our neighbours coming to help and the hospital staff were so

great, it was unreal,” he said, taking a break from a project in the Holiday Park wood shop. “Then when we moved here my wife came down with breast cancer and everybody helped us out again.

So we thought ‘why can’t we give something back to the community.’ It’s a situation where you help

That philosophy is paramount at Holiday Park, a community of more than 1,000 residents, the majority of them senior citizens.

Orlick became the president of the Holiday Park Leaseholders Association which represents the residents when issues arise as well as organizing a variety of fundraisers throughout the year.

The group holds an annual Christmas dinner, a monthly pancake breakfast as well as publishing a directory of park residents.

Less formally, an e-mail list is circulated with every resident on it and if someone needs help, they can find it amongst their neighbours.

“We do thousands of hours of volunteer work each year,” said Orlick.

“It might be helping out the administration, some painting, a bit of clean-

Last year’s Christmas dinner raised $500 which was recently presented to the Lake Country Food Bank.

“I love it and my wife does too,” said Orlick of the spirit of cooperation and community at Holiday Park. “We’re always thinking of ways we can get involved in the community. Some days we work our hearts out. No word of a lie, some weeks we put in 50 hours of volunteer work, then for a week maybe we won’t do much.”

How exactly can diabetes cause me to have foot problems?

Diabetes that is uncontrolled will affect the organ systems in different ways. Peripheral neuropathy is a term commonly used to indicate an uncomfortable burning or tingling sensation in the feet. While this is correct, the term also encompasses other symptoms related to nerve damage. The inability to feel a small pebble in your shoe to ominously not feeling a razor blade left in the bathroom is also caused by peripheral neuropathy.

Healthy nerves that regulate perspiration from sweat glands in the feet and send motor signals telling our foot muscles and tendons when to contract and relax are also compromised in peripheral neuropathy. This can lead to dry, cracked skin, and rigid contractures of our toes leading to dangerous pressure points, respectively. Increased blood sugar circulating in the blood stream will deposit into tendons causing them to be more rigid and lead to further contractures and a less supple leg and foot.

Arteries carrying blood to your feet can also become diseased limiting blood flow needed to help heal any wound or bring antibiotics needed to treat infection. If you have diabetes, it is a good idea to see your podiatrist to be assessed for the above and also for care of your nails and calluses.

In honour of glaucoma awareness week, what exactly is glaucoma?

Although not always the case, glaucoma is an eye condition traditionally characterized by increased pressure within the eyes. The term pressure is somewhat misleading however, as people are not typically aware when and if it occurs. When eye pressure is left outside of what is considered to be a normal range (~ 10-21 mmHg) changes to the optic nerve can occur - resulting in the loss of peripheral vision. Interestingly enough, if this visual loss occurs, our brain is able to adapt and ignore the missing areas of the visual field. Practically, what this means is that without early intervention glaucoma is typically not noticed by the individual until the later stages of the disease. When picked up early however, glaucoma is usually very manageable with the use of medicated eyedrops and/or surgical intervention. As such, it becomes very important to closely monitor risk factors observed during your routine eye-exam.

Exciting wrap-up to the season at the curling club What a great week of curling at the Winfield Curling Club.

First off, we got to watch team Morris on TSN, for those of us who weren’t lucky enough to have tickets to the final Tim Horton’s Briar weekend in Kamloops, finish off the round robin in first place.

The final game had team Koe dominate with his skill and patience over our favoured B.C. rink of Rick Sawatsky, Tyrell Griffith, John Morris and Jim Cotter. This team has only been together for 10 months and I’m sure we will be seeing a lot more of them in years to come.

Meanwhile back in Winfield, we had our Monday Morning Ladies League’s invitational one day bonspiel, which gathers outof-town teams to mix with the local women. It was a great day with lots of curling and friendships made. Thank you to Betty who organized this special day, and to all the volunteers who helped out with their various jobs for the day.

The seniors’ league wound up with their own one day funspiel on Wednesday. A huge thanks to Keith and Muriel who put it all together, and all their volunteers that help out throughout the year. These seniors are a special kind of group that truly enjoy the sport of curling as well as socializing later.

The men’s play-offs took place on Monday and Wednesday nights with Hughes defeating Siegmann and Laface squeaking out a win over Nagel. The two winners then played off for an over-all champion and Grant Hughes, with teammates Robert Wagner, David Gibbs and Gordon Gardner played extremely well and defeated the Thursday night men’s league winner Wayne Laface, with his third Rob Thompson, second Dylan Thomson and lead Jim Thomson. It was a great game to watch from upstairs.

spiel took place over the weekend and we will announce the winner next week, after all the dust settles and the ice comes out. There were 32 teams entered and way too many great shots made.

A special thanks to the bonspiel committee who always puts on an excellent weekend of curling, and to the board of directors in general for all their hard work during the season.

My personal thanks goes out to Ron, Fern, Ursula, Ev, Jim, Rob, Dylan, Jim, Bill, Cyril, Pina and Ramine.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

Well, lookie here.

One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion.

That’s definitely not democracy in action.

The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board.

That’s gotta tell you something.

Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

2. Recycle Styrofoam! Starting May 19th you can take Styrofoam such as electronic packaging, meat trays and egg cartons to a local recycling depot. Styrofoam will not be accepted in the curbside carts.

3. Plastic Film (such as plastic bags) will no longer be accepted in the curbside carts and must be recycled at a depot.
