Province is looking to have the Columbia River Treaty extended By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government wants to keep the 50-year-old Columbia River Treaty with the U.S. and recalculate the power, flood control and other benefits it provides. Energy Minister Bill Bennett announced the decision Thursday to stick with the treaty and try to convince the U.S. government it is a fair deal. B.C. gets “downstream benefits” worth between $100 and $300 million a year from the treaty, and the U.S. has suggested that is too much. “We believe, with all due respect to the U.S., that if all of the benefits in the U.S. are identified and valued, that

Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower at the signing of the Columbia River Treaty, January 1961. in fact Canada probably does not receive enough,” Bennett said Thursday. “There hasn’t been a major flood in the U.S. since the Canadian dams were constructed,” Bennett said. “Before the Canadian dams were constructed, there were some horrible floods causing loss of life and billions of dollars of damage. So the treaty was negotiated 50 years ago on the basis of producing power and controlling floods.”

The treaty has no expiry date, but it contains a 10-year termination clause that can be invoked by either country. The U.S. State Department has the final say on whether it will continue the treaty or give notice to withdraw by 2024. Officials at the Portland-based Bonneville Power Administration have recommended a “modernized framework that balances power production, flood risk management, and eco-

system-based function as the primary purposes addressed in the treaty, while also meeting other congressionally authorized purposes of the U.S. project, such as irrigation and navigation.” On the B.C. side, dams on the Columbia system provide about half of the province’s current electricity supply. Bennett said he expects tough negotiations, but he is confident the treaty can be settled. “Yankee trader is an

expression that I’m familiar with,” Bennett said. “They’ve always done very well on the softwood agreement it seems to me, so I’m not expecting an easy ride or anything. But the history of the treaty is that the two countries have collaborated very well.”

Local fire fighters and WorkSafe BC Submitted The Government of British Columbia today will table legislation under the Workers Compensation Act to restore heart disease in firefighters as a presumptive disease recognized by WorkSafeBC. This proposed amendment to the Workers Compensation Act fulfils Government’s election commitment to restore heart disease in firefighters - including forest firefighters - to

the list of presumptive diseases recognized by WorkSafeBC. Under the proposed amendment, if a firefighter suffers from heart disease or a heart injury - including a heart attack - it will be presumed to be due to their work as a firefighter unless the contrary is proved. Some of the other key features of the legislation are as follows: • The proposed amendments will provide presumptions for

heart disease and for heart injury including heart attacks. • The presumptions will apply if the claimant was employed as a firefighter at or immediately before the date of disablement from heart injury or disease. • This legislation will thus support B.C. firefighters in receiving workers’ compensation should they suffer from heart disease or heart injury as a result of their work. • The presumption will be available to local government firefighters as well as forest firefighters. • Finally, the presumption will apply to

eligible firefighters who first become disabled from heart disease or heart injury on or after the day the legislation comes into force on Royal Assent. B.C. continues to be a leader in recognizing occupational diseases associated with long-term employment as a firefighter and the proposed legislation if passed would make the province the only jurisdiction in Canada to have a presumption for heart disease embedded in its workers’ compensation legislation.

OBITUARY

MAHON, ADDIE 1923 - 2014 The family of Addie Mary Mahon announce her passing on March 12, 2014, at the Victorian Community Health Centre in Kaslo, BC at the age of 90. She was the youngest daughter of Caroline Lum and Jim Buckman, born September 18, 1923 in Athalmer, BC. Addie was raised with her siblings at the family home in Fort Steele, BC where she attended school to grade 8 in the one room schoolhouse now located in Fort Steele Heritage Park. For high school, Addie travelled on the mail bus and attended Central School in Cranbrook, BC. Once Addie finished school she joined her sisters in Vancouver, BC and worked making white wire cable and after studying welding worked as a welder at the shipyards during WWII. She later returned to Fort Steele and married Bill Mahon in 1946. Addie and Bill lived in Williams Lake, Fort St. James, Prince George and Fort Steele before settling in Kaslo, in the late ‘50s to raise their son Brian. A long time resident of Kaslo, Addie worked at the hospital as a nurse’s aide for 24 years until she retired. An active member of the community she enjoyed golf and was a tireless volunteer with the Brownies, Girl Guides and the Boy Scouts of Canada and in later years was a member of the West Kootenay Trefoil Guild, she also volunteered with the Catholic Women’s League, as well as being a lifetime member of the Ladies Legion Auxiliary. In her retirement, Addie travelled to exotic locations such as Egypt but more often she travelled throughout the province to visit family. Addie enjoyed a good cup of coffee and a lively conversation and engaged life on her terms seeing the good in others and the best of any situation. Predeceased by her husband Bill in 1964 and son Brian in 2005, her parents in the early ‘60s, sisters Matilda (Amelia) Tuck, Lucille Loseth, the twins Edith Jane and Margarite Buckman, and Anne Grainger and brothers Alfred Buckman, Richard Charles Buckman, Francis Buckman and Alan (Bucky) Buckman. She is survived by the extended Buckman, Lum and Ban Quan families originally of the Fort Steele and Cranbrook area. Addie was kind, generous and considerate with her heart and home always open and welcoming; she will be sadly missed by friends and family, especially her many nieces and nephews all of whom adored her. A funeral service for Addie will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday March 19, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Kaslo, BC; a reception tea to follow at the Kaslo Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of your choice.

Karen Johnston is the publisher of The Cranbrook Daily Townsman, The Kimberley Daily Bulletin and The Kootenay Advertiser and represents a hosting business for the upcoming Speak Your Mind, The Kootenay Women’s Show 2014. Q: In many ways, the news industry has been a gentlemen’s club. Did you have to do anything differently to rise through the ranks? A: There is no question 26 years ago when I started in this industry it was an ‘old boys club’. It was difficult, at the beginning,

to be taken seriously. Possibly my stubborn nature kept me going. I found by showing them the respect and assure them I was there to learn and excel, it didn’t take too long to earn their trust and respect. It must be noted, the shift has changed in the past few years. For example, I just attended a BC Interior seminar of Black Press publishers - of the 14 at the table, only five were men. Q: Why did you decide to be a host for the Kootenay Women’s Show? A: Because women need to be celebrated and celebrate – besides – girls rock! We are

the best multi-taskers there are! We often stand in proud support of spouses, clean up scraped knees, wipe tears and tuck in our children, we ensure our homes are what are families need, many of us also work full time and have the responsibilities of running businesses and/or providing very important role for our employers. Most women do all of this with very little complaint and ask for little credit. As a woman, I believe we need to celebrate everything we do and what better than an evening with the sisterhood. A: Breast Cancer, while not exclusive to women, will affect most every women in her lifetime. My own mother is a survivor and one very close friend lost her battle with the disease several years ago. These ladies are our neighbours and friends. They celebrate the survivor and encourage the support. They have found a way to connect and move forward in an inspiring and positive manner. It is the perfect fit for our evening. Q: What inspires you most as a woman and a business leader in the community? A: My inspiration was actually nurtured by my Father who still remains my mentor. While his mind and body hasn’t afforded him to be the mentor he used to be, he never let his two girls feel they couldn’t conquer the world. I was taught to live my live with respect, kindness, understanding and most of all laughter. What you see is what you get with me and I truly hope I bring that to the table with all my amazing staff and those in our community. Every day is different with new challenges and I wouldn’t want to do it any where else or with anyone else - I love the Kootenays and all the great women, men and children that make us such a diversely rich community. My family, my work, my community - I love it and every single person I cross paths with.

Letter - City Council’s limited vocabulary The word “no” needs to be added to Council’s vocabulary. The endless parade of well-meaning persons requesting money from Council need to realize Council isn’t a gold mine, nor is it an apple orchard or any moneymaking business. It is a government, and it’s sitting with an infrastructure deficit over one million dollars. This alone should have caused Council to say “no” to a fire hall fountain, “no” to an expenditure of over 200 thousand dollars for a gargantuan welcome-to-Cranbrook sign, and “no” to paving a road in the alfalfa field for $250,000. The Council could also cut back on the number of councilors taking trips to Vancouver for provincial municipalities’ meetings, to Niagara Falls for Canadian municipalities’ meetings, as well as foreign

junkets. I voted for change but got more of the same. Councils that formulate public policy without reading put personalism over professionalism. A previous Council produced its 2020 vision: It predicted Cranbrook’s population to be 30-40 thousand by 2020. [Townsman, July 22, 2005] Current Council appears more interested in their own desires than the public needs. Council just voted for 4-year terms, protecting themselves from the voter. One-year terms would wake Council up, but Council sets the terms, not the taxpayer that hires the Council. As to our deer problem, we have a Council led by tool-box Stetski, as he ducks, dives and delays any decision he personally opposes but won’t say so. One tool, trapping and relocation, has been discredited by

scientific studies in dozens of jurisdictions over decades. And now in BC: “Although the nonlethal approach to urban deer management may appeal to the public, as it appears to be an easy and humane solution, in reality the translocation process can be difficult, expensive, stressful to the deer and has resulted in high posttranslocation mortality rates.” [Andrew Walker, Townsman, March 6, 2014] The hazing “tool” is part joke and part hoax, though it’s food for councilors that insist their emotions preclude the scientific literature. We don’t have to suffer the endless search for more tools in some mythical tool box to address problem deer. The defining deer cull survey will come in this fall’s election, when the voter can ask candidates “yes” or “no” to a lethal deer cull. ~William G. Hills, Cranbrook, BC

Local archers headed to Arizona by Elaine Johnson

Two archers – Brittany Johnson from Cranbrook and Kevin Evans from Jaffray head to Phoenix, Arizona the first weekend in April to compete in this year’s first outdoor tournament. This event is just one of many tournaments these two archers will be competing in this year. Kevin Evans has had an extremely busy couple of years, attending the Paralympics in 2008 - Bejjing finishing in 5th and 2012 - London finishing in 9th. He holds 4 world records all Canadian outdoor Para com-

pound records. He won two World championships in 2007 and 2009 - receiving Gold medals. Brittany is no slouch either. At 17 years old she competed in her first World Junior Championships in Oct. 2013 finishing in 8th place in the World. Brittany holds the Canadian Junior record in the 50 meter elimination and has sat in the Gold ranking squad for two years in a row. She has won many gold and silver medals in her three years of competing Nationally. Good luck to both in Arizona.

At Tuesday’s Board School District 5 (SD5) Board Chair, Frank Lento proudly acknowledged Trustee Gail Brown for her recent Woman of the Year award presented last month by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Cranbrook Club. The award, which has been given out annually for the past thirty years, include past award recipients and SD5 teachers, Jennie Humphrey and Sandra Zeznick. It recognizes East Kootenay region women whose work and talents contribute to the education and/or advancement of women. “Gail’s entire career

has been dedicated to improving outcomes for children, for providing mothers and families with the tools and resources they need to raise happy, healthy, successful children,” said Lento. Brown was gracious in accepting the recognition, pointing out that the Woman of the Year award also belongs to countless others of equal dedication with whom she’s worked alongside over the years. “None of these are ‘my’ projects, but rather achievements made with an idea that grew with the help of citizens of this community. I am proud to be part of this membership of men and women; a team of likeminded people to share

goals in making everything a little bit better.” Brown’s contributions include the expansion and transformation of the Annual Cranbrook Children’s Festival, formation of seven East Kootenay community Early Child Development committees and her tireless and visionary work to make the Kootenay Child Development Centre (KCDC) a reality. Fellow Trustee, Patricia Whalen, who was also involved in the KCDC project says Gail was an inspiration for everyone who worked on the project. An awards ceremony on March 4th, 2014, was attended by fellow Trustees Trina Ayling, Chris Johns and Patricia Whalen in honour of their fellow Board member.

Spring 100 years in the making Submitted “The object (of these competitions) is to train the heads and hands of the boys and girls; to give them broad and big hearts; to improve their health by giving them an interest in outdoor life; and to encourage on the part of all British Columbia citizens, a stronger and more intelligent interest in agriculture.” Such was the goal of the 4-H movement when it started in 1914 in British Columbia. During this first year, over 200 young people between the ages of 10 and 18 were involved in competitions sponsored by the Department of Agriculture. Originally the program focused on potatoes as a project but was expanded later that year to include poultry in order to interest more youth and to widen the influence of progressive farming practices on the BC farming community. Clubs were originally known as Boys and Girls clubs until they were renamed 4-H clubs in 1952 to more clearly represent the four H’s - head, heart, hands and health. Swine, beef, dairy, corn, potato and poultry projects were popular in the early years, with the Department of Agriculture being instrumental in providing project training, instruction in judging and, support. In the 1950’s and 60’s, more effort was placed on recruiting and training volunteer leaders to assist with the clubs. While project training continued to be an important part of the program, the development of the individual 4-H member was given greater emphasis with a focus on public speaking, judging, citizenship and self development. Provincial Club Week began in the 1960’s as did member travel to national 4-H programs in Canada and the United States. In 1965, the Provincial Advisory Council (now called the B.C. 4-H Provincial Council) had

its first meeting. Today the Council, comprised of volunteer representatives from each of the eight 4-H regions across the British Columbia and the Yukon, continues to be the policy making body for the BC 4-H organization. In the 1970’s and 80’s, non-agricultural 4-H projects including crafts, environment, and outdoor living, were introduced as more nonfarm youth joined the 4-H Program. Since the start, the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands has been highly supportive of our Program. Through the current partnership agreement, the 4-H Provincial Council is responsible for administration, management, policy making, marketing and sponsorship for the provincial 4-H Program. The Council currently employs four staff members to carry out these responsibilities in concert with the Council and it’s committees. Operating out of the new office in Vernon, the staff consists of a Manager, Administrative Coordinator, Fund D e v e l o p m e n t Coordinator, Fund Development Assistant, Program Coordinator, and a Communications and Marketing Coordinator. Ministry Youth Community Development Programs staff are responsible for leadership training and program development and delivery. This partnership encourages 4-H’s increasing responsibility and ownership of it’s own program. Today, almost 3,000 young people between the ages of 6 and 21, together with thousands of volunteer leaders, families, alumni and sponsors, make up the 4-H Program in British Columbia. Horse, beef and sheep projects are the most popular, however, increasingly more members are enrolling in projects such as dog, rabbit, swine, llama, Cloverbuds and others! There are abundant opportunities for both members and leaders

Farm & Ranch

- travel, training and education, scholarships, ambassadorship, fun and friendships. 4-H is cross-generational! Many former members whose parents were club

leaders, become leaders themselves as their children enter the 4-H program. 2014 will marked the 100th anniversary of 4-H in British Columbia.

While 4-H has changed and evolved a great deal since it’s start in 1914, the impact of the program on our young people is as relevant today as it was back then.

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A9

4-H continues to teach young people to successfully meet the challenges not only of their own futures but also the future of their communities. From the 6 year

old Cloverbud member to the 21 year old 4-H Ambassador, the 4-H program continues to be a fantastic training ground for life.

The Cranbrook Violin Club, led by Mr. Lutz, entertained the Kootenay Livestock AGM with various violin arrangements. by Lily Durham

First my legs were sore, now my gut hurts, what’s next? Fact: Colic and lameness are two of the most common health concerns in horses. We are having a talk at our Cranbrook clinic on April 11 at 6PM to discuss these issues and their treatment. There will be a special emphasis on the use of joint injections. Please call us today and let us know you are coming. 250-489-3451 (Cranbrook)

Kootenay Livestock held their AGM on Saturday January 18th. Members from throughout the East Kootenay attended. Meeting opened with remarks from the presiding president Randy Reay whom was most thankful to the office staff and

volunteers that continue to keep the organization strong. “United we stand divided we fall,” was quoted by Randy to show that the ranching community needs to continue with its efforts and to work on goals that reach the growing demand for beef. Randy stated that KLA has had a good year and thanked

Landis, Leanne and Faye for their contributions in the office. This years committee reports were given: Weed committee has established three areas of focus- outreach and education, innovative ideas, and lobbying efforts. One of the various issues that continues to arise for them

is invasive plants on private land and the lack of enforcement. Announcement was made of the new program Manager for East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council-Todd Larsen, MSc PAg. Welcome Todd. Wildlife Committee

Although compensation is still at a cost to the rancher for the animals lost, the committee continues to work with government to improve on this. The Creston Valley Beef Growers Association (CVBGA) is excited and honored to be hosting this prestigious annual event at the Creston & District Community Complex. The Creston Recreation Centre is an ideal facility that will house our event and trade show under one roof. This facility also has a public indoor swimming pool. The agriculture community at large as well as the general public will be invited each day to visit the Trade show.

their Inc. and have the Wildhorse Lewis applications ready to go. Thank you gentlemen for your hard work. The highlight of the day for myself and for others was when Trish Nairns from Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Invasive Plant Committee spoke and gave a power point presentation on ‘training cows to eat weeds.’ Now I must say there were many a skeptic in the room and a few laughs as the entire idea was foreign to many of us. Cows eating weeds? Why would they want to? Well Trish you certainly turned our thinking around with your

presentation and gave us some food for thought (or weeds). Cows have a palate and when they are lacking certain nutrients they will look for those nutrients in other earth producers-possibly weeds. Through experimentation and trial and error it has come to light that cows will eat weeds and various types of weeds. After 7-10 days working with a few cows you can train them to eat Knapweed, Dalmatian Toadflax, Burdock, Canada thistle plus more. Unreal but very interesting. Grass see AGM page 13

EDUCATION DAY: Western Livestock Price Insurance

We are very excited about our annual Cattlemen’s Education Day Seminar on Saturday May 24, 2014 from 1-3 pm. Join us for an engaging presentation by Haley Rutherford on the new Western Livestock Price Insurance Program. Deemed a “game-changer” for the cattle industry, the risk management tool is now available to cattle producers in B.C. It will help minimize risks associated with unforeseen and unpredictable market events. Producers can purchase price protection on calf, feeder and fed cattle, in the form of an insurance policy. Learn about risk management in the cattle industry, how the Western Livestock Price Insurance Program works, and why producers should consider this risk management tool in their ranch operations.

Celebrating 100 years of 4H The Creston Valley Beef Growers Association is proud to host a local 4H Education Day

For our Saturday feature event our Local 4H Club will be hosting an all-day info session with Krik Stierwalt. Kirk Stierwalt is an accomplished cattle fitter, educator, judge, and leader in the show cattle industry. In the past 33 years Stierwalt and his family have won numerous awards at prestigious national and international shows. Stierwalt contributes his knowledge through his active participation in 4-H and FFA programs conducting clinics, seminars and demonstrations for young people and cattle families. experiment as we all know what goes in must always come out. Don Lowe, Provincial Beef Specialist did a question and answer segment and spoke on various topics: Verified Beef Program, Code of Practice (National Farm Animal Care Code) and

McDonald’s vs. A&W debate. His presentation was very interactive as he asked those in the room the questions and many topics present were: lack of confidence in costs that continue to rise for beef producers, trade issues, certification and veri-

fication, predators and wildlife, crown range issues, AWCR water sustainability Act and the legacy of BSE. Very interactive as agriculture continually faces the same issues throughout the years. Don recommended the BC Farm Business Advisory

Service Program that helps ranchers understand their financial situation, performance and future development of their business. Brain Zak (GREP project coordinator) gave his final presentation to us as he has retired. Over the 3 years of GREP

36 projects have been approved. The total project investment on the Crown Range Land Base over this period has been $837,000. GREP has been given and additional 3 years with a funding increase see AGM page 14

Brian, project manager of the Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program has aided in creating an awareness and much funding for projects throughout our Crown Range Land and worked diligently with Kootenay Livestock. You have left us with a void that most truly will take some big boots to fill. The very best to you in your future endeavours. Kootenay Livestock continues to work on the issues that continually bombard our industry. It seems like Agriculture is at the bottom of the barrel sometimes with the various red tape and continued enforcements put upon our Industry. There never seems to be enough done or said about the troubles that face our ranchers, with ongoing issues from predators, compensation for fencing and cattle loss, noxious weeds, range enhancement and the ongoing challenges put on the Beef Industry. Farming and Ranching is one of the oldest and most important Industries that we have. It amazes me continually how everyone tends to be ignorant to the fact that without it we would not have the staples that are needed to complete our meals. I am proud to know that when the lights go out I can survive and it scares me to think that today’s youth are hopeless without their phones, technology and electricity. Agriculture sustains our life and it is time to put its importance higher up. This area is not just mining and forestry for without agriculture these industries would not flourish. We as ranchers and farmers take pride in our lands, animals and families and will continue to work towards keeping our industry known for its substantial part of the worlds economic and ecological place mat. Thank you to all the families and members that continue to keep this Industry striving a part of their daily lives.

With the large black and white markings that make them so easy to identify, it’s hard not to notice the presence of Holstein cows in a field. They can be found on five continents around the globe, but in the United States and Canada, they outnumber all other dairy cow breeds. The number of Holsteins around the world numbers several million head. Their name varies according to the country, but they are still the uncontested champions of dairy cows. This superiority is mainly attributed to genetic improvements in the breed, which was developed in Canada and the United States at artificial insemination centres. The average annual milk production of a cow is close to 10,000 kg. It can easily reach 17,000 kg in the best specimens. Weighing up to 680 kg, this cow is easily recognized by its prominent hips and visible bones. Angular in appearance, its abdomen was developed to digest as much food mass as possible. All its energy is used to produce milk. Of course, this breed’s milk is the most prized among cheese manufacturers, who have very particular technical requirements. That is one of the reasons why these cows are so

Even though noticeable improvements have been genetically engineered, their lifespan is as short as many other breeds. Holsteins are

also a poor source of beef, which leads many American producers to acquire other breeds for a more balanced herd.

Heads: you get a worse recycling program. Tails: you get to pay more for it.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less. Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess. The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that profits will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC. And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper, or pretty much anything else that comes in a package, businesses will be passing their increased costs on to you. How much more? Well, nobody’s saying. Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?” It’s time to contact Premier Clark and ask her.

What’s going on here?

Construction Questions Do building codes guarantee a quality built house? Part 2 by Menno Dueck

Definitely not. As introduced in Part I, building codes establish minimum standards for safety, health, accessibility, fire and structural protection; quality of construction is up to each individual contractor. Here’s more tips to help you discern the level of quality used in constructing a house. How well insulated is the home? Indicators of insulation problems show up differently in winter and summer. In the winter, check to see if the walls and/or floors are cold to the touch. Are some rooms hotter or colder than others? Is there mold growing on the walls? In the summer, check for uncomfortably hot rooms, and mold growing in the basement. To review the different types of insulation, R values and installation criteria, or to learn about retrofitting older homes, go to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation website (www.cmhcschl.gc.ca) and search “insulating your house”. Do floors flex, feel soft or squeak? There are several reasons this might happen. If OSB (Oriented Strand Board) sheeting has been used, it is not as stiff as plywood and can result in soft, flexing floors, particularly under the weight of appliances such as stacking washer/ dryers and soaker tubs. OSB doesn’t handle moisture well so be on the lookout for where it might show up (bathrooms, laundry

rooms, roofs are not a good idea!) Plywood, while costing more, is the superior product. Squeaks may be caused by nailing (cheaper) instead of screwing the sheeting. Screwing and glue stops squeaks before they start and makes for a very firm floor. How sturdy are the door frames? This is where a “wiggle test” can be applied. If shims and screws have not been used to install the door frame properly, you will be able to wiggle the jamb (frame). Even if the trim appears straight and firmly attached, if the jamb wiggles, the trim is helping to hold the door in place and eventually the door will shift and not close properly. Test on both the hinge and knob side of all interior doors. Love crown molding? Beautiful finishing as long as it’s not hiding something! A recent project revealed 4” crown molding was covering up drywall that was separating from the ceiling, creating a gap. During the framing stage, improper nailing and use of studs that were too short caused the problem. Still met code. Missed an article or two? regular maintenance. To have a cozy and inviting sleeping space, avoid cluttering up the room with furniture and other objects that don’t belong there. Choose your bed with care, as it should be the focal point of the room. Add bedside ta bles and a simple closet or chest of drawers. Don’t forget to turn the mattress from time to time and remember to change the mattress and box spring about every ten years. Create a relaxing atmosphere by opting for natural materials; wood is a classic choice. Avoid lacquers and varnishes, which can sometimes emit toxic fumes harmful to your health. Choose colours that you find pleasing as well as comforting. Fa vour soft lighting, which is conducive to a subdued and relaxing atmosphere, and place some soft, natural fibre rugs on the floor to dampen noise. Be sure to sleep in natural fabric sheets and keep in mind that airing the room before going to bed can help to chase away insomnia. With a bit of attention, you can create a cozy space where it is easy to unwind from your day and get the rest that you need. After all, some people might fall asleep as soon as their heads touch the pillow, but that’s not the case for all of us!

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

The Cadillac CTS has captured numerous awards and spearheaded a modern transformation of the iconic American luxury car maker, since its introduction in 2003. The high-powered, highperformance “V” edition can go toe-to-toe with the best of its Euro competitors and has set production car lap records at the renowned Nurburgring, in Germany. Even more important, for used car buyers, the CTS (2011-13) has a very good reliability record, which helped get it a “recommended buy” rating from Consumer Reports. Other pluses include surprisingly good fuel economy numbers (with either V6 engine) and attractive resale values (for buyers). CTS was the first Cadillac to feature that distinctively sharp edge styling that’s now synonymous with the

brand and this was taken to another level with the 2008, second generation, redesign. By 2011, the CTS line had grown to include Sport Wagon and Coupe editions, plus “V” editions of both. The 2011 CTS-V Coupe was voted the “Best New Sports / Performance Car over $50,000” by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). Entry-level editions of the 2011 CTS sedan came with a 3.0-litre (255 horsepower) V6 that’s mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Fuel economy with the 3.0L/ auto powertrain is a frugal 11.3/7.2 L/100 km (city/ highway). The optional 3.6 litre is a 24-valve engine with direct fuel injection that can generate 304 horsepower and fuel economy is 11.4/6.9 L/100 km, which is roughly the same. The CTS all-wheel drive system runs a 30/70 frontto-rear drive split under normal conditions, to maintain a rear-drive driving dynamic. It’s also capable of delivering up to 100 per cent of torque to either axle when needed and fuel

economy-wise it adds about 0.5L/100km, which is reasonable. Moving up to a V-edition of CTS you get a 556-horsepower supercharged V8 engine (from the Corvette) that likes premium fuel and gulps it down a rate of 17.7/10.5 L/100 km (city/highway). Aimed squarely at driving enthusiasts, the go-faster V-edition also comes with high-performance additions such as its Magnetic Ride Control system and a Brembo brake package. The interior is decidedly driver focused, yet still luxurious. In front of the driver is a three-pod instrument cluster with a combination of analog and digital readouts. A centrally positioned chrome-ringed analog time clock adds a touch of elegance and a partially hidden pop-up multi-use monitor is a unique feature. The front bucket seats are generously sized and you sit lower (sports car like) in the Coupe than in the sedan or the wagon. The front passenger is protected by a unique dualdepth design of air bag that is more effective at reducing

With the Vancouver International Auto Show just around the corner, I thought I would share my list of exciting new SUVs that are available. Tough to nail down just one but I am sure one of these would spark some interest. 2014 Ford Explorer Sport is a performance version of its popular SUV. The headlights and taillights have been blacked out to give it a sporty appearance. 20-inch painted and machined wheels allow room for the larger brakes that help it stop faster and improve performance when towing. The engine is an impressive 3.5 litre, twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6, producing a whopping 365 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque with a 6 speed automatic transmission. To say this is quick off the line is an understatement. The Explorer also features a terrain management system that lets you select between sand, snow, mud, or hill descent.

Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. Classic lookalikes sell at (almost) bargain prices By Rob Sass

1965 Jaguar XKE coupe (picture courtesy of Russo and Steele)

The Pebble Beach auctions are generally not the place for bargain hunters. It’s nothing unusual for $300 million in automotive merchandise to change hands with some lots bringing more than $10 million and a staggering 100-plus cars capable of cracking the $1 million mark. Just 20 or 30 years ago, many of these cars were attainable to people of ordinary means. So what’s an ordinary mortal whose been priced out of the Ferrari and Cobra market to do? Look at some alternatives that provide 90 percent of the bang for 5 percent of the buck. Here are some of our favorites: 1963 Shelby Cobra/1992 Dodge Viper: Everybody

1973 Triumph GT6

loves a Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s idea of stuffing an American V-8 in a lightweight British sports car was an instant hit. The trouble is, if you didn’t buy one in the early 1980s when they were about $30,000, your chances of acquiring one are pretty slim for much less than a million. So, instead of a Cobra replica you’ll always have to make excuses for, why not buy its spiritual successor,

the Dodge Viper? Early examples of this V-10 powered, raw and uncompromising, car can still be had for less than what Cobras were selling for 30 years ago. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 N.A.R.T. Spider/Intermeccanica Italia: One example

recently sold for around $17 million. But unknown to most people, it has an Americanpowered near doppelganger that costs a fraction of the price. Back in the 1960s, Canadian Frank Reisner dreamed of building Ferrari-like GT cars with American V-8 power. His Intermeccanica Italia roadster hit the mark in terms of Ferrari-like style — the bodies were even built in Italy — but in place of a complex and expensive V-12, most had smallblock Ford V-8 power, with some tuned by the famous American race shop Holman and Moody. About 400 Italias were built, and they’re not cheap (RM Auctions sold one in 2007 for $44,000). They cost a fraction of the Ferrari but have most of the looks and performance, if not the pedigree. 1965 Jaguar XKE coupe/1973 Triumph GT6:

accepted as one of the prettiest cars of all time. And its great looks don’t come cheap. The first and most desirable series of the beloved XKE or E-Type now regularly brings more than $100,000. But few people know that fellow British sports car company Triumph made a threequarter scale near replica of

OBITUARY Ida Jane Cale April 7, 1951 – March 6, 2014 Ida Jane Cale was born on a Saturday. She was born to Andy and Alice Stobie in Calgary, their youngest child and only daughter. Her life long friend Betty would live just next door to her. She left Wild Rose Country as a young woman and headed west to British Columbia and the call of the ocean. After living the coastal life, she headed north to Prince George and became one of the first women to work for BC Parks, a career that would alter the course of her life and be the root for many of her most meaningful and life-long friendships. A transfer down to the East Kootenays, where she became a mainstay of the Wasa Community and made many more friends, led her to meet the love of her life Bob Cale. Bob and Ida were wed in 1979, had Cindy Marie in 1982 and Josie Alyse in 1986. After close to 40 years with BC Parks, Ida retired in 2009 but continued to be an active volunteer and community member with more time for her garden and to adopt friend’s babies as her own grandchildren. Ida believed that families were built out of love, which meant that her family tree was truly extensive. Ida died on a Thursday, after battling lung and bone cancer. She leaves us all a bit poorer without her presence but she will continue to affect the world for the better through the hearts of all who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 1:30PM at the Wasa Community Hall in Wasa, BC. Here is a link to a Google Map for the Wasa Hall: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/ Wasa+Community+Hall/@49.790418,-115.745547,17z/dat a=!4m2!3m1!1s0x537ad2b82546f409:0xb0a63c07845d69 5c?hl=en As per Ida’s request, in lieu of flowers or donations, please do something kind or thoughtful for someone. The proposed amendment to the Radium FSP #17 is the addition of new Forest Development Units (FDU’s) in the Invermere TSA, inclusion of Shuswap Indian Band’s Replaceable Forest License (RFL) A90310 and the addition of the Akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) as co-signator. The proposed amendment to Canfor’s (formerly Tembec’s) Kootenay FSP, is to include the AFN and St-Mary’s Indian Band (SMIB) as co-signators, the addition of the AFN’s Non-replaceable Forest License (NRFL) A88225 and SMIB’s NRFL A84738 . There are no changes to the results and strategies of the FSP’s. TIMBER SUPPLY AREA: Invermere TSA GEOGRAPHIC AREA OF NEW FDU’S: Bugaboo Creek, Kindersley Creek, Dutch Creek, Cross River, East Columbia, Nine Mile/Moscow Creek and Doctor Creek. PROPOSED ACTIVITIES IN FDU’S: Harvesting, road building and silviculture activities to facilitate the harvest of timber including infested and damaged timber from beetle, windthrow or fire. The plan specifies results or strategies that are consistent with: 1) objectives set by government in the Kootenay Boundary Higher Level Plan, and 2) objectives prescribed by the Forest and Range Practices Act or otherwise established by government. The FSP also specifies measures for preventing the introduction or spread of invasive plants and to mitigate the loss of natural range barriers. Finally, the FSP specifies the regeneration date, free growing height and stocking standards necessary to actively establish and reforest harvested areas. The FSP is available for public review and written comment at: Canfor Woodlands Office - Radium Radium Plaza building, 7585 Main St. West, Radium Hot Springs, BC. Or Canfor Woodlands Office – Cranbrook 1000 Industrial Rd #1, Cranbrook, BC Persons may review the FSP during regular business hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, From March 14, 2014 to May 13, 2014 A Canfor representative will be available to discuss the proposed plans and receive comments.
