wo bull elk sporting large pieces of garbage in their antlers are hanging out in a Somenos Road field trying to live normal lives.

But Sandra Mathews fears that isn’t easy, given the size of stuff in their racks.

She spoke with conservation officers earlier this week regarding potential problems — one Roosevelt elk has fence wire and a fence post tangled in its horns; the other is wearing a big, plastic bag on its head.

“A fence post stuck on your head isn’t fun,” she told the News Leader Pictorial, “especially when you want to eat, or go through trees.”

The elk tangled in wire and the post “must back up to eat,” she noted.

But officers said it’s best to wait about two weeks for those racks to drop, rather than doing a traumatic tranquilizing, then removing the debris.

“Darting them just puts them under duress,” said conservation spokesman Dave Karn. “It can kill them, so having them go hungry might be preferable.”

Cowichan CO Scott Norris — who visited the Somenos scene — agreed, noting elusive elk are hard to dart “unless they’re hung up.”

Norris sympathized with the animals hampered by the rack refuse.

“But these animals are still able to feed themselves. We’d rather not risk drugging them and killing them, but we are concerned when there’s

stuff around an animal’s neck.”

Elk could die from stress of interference from foreign objects, being captured, then having dope introduced into their systems, Norris explained.

Officers learned of the wire-and-post draped elk about a week ago. The one with the white feed sack appeared in mid-December, he explained.

Mathews remained worried.

“The conservation officers said they’d come out here if the elk get hooked on something, otherwise they’ll wait until the antlers fall off in another one to 1½ weeks.”

Again, she had concerns with that answer.

“These elk are quite vulnerable to dogs in our area.”

One nine-member herd in her area is part of a larger group of some 21, she said of valley elk that have been a nuisance to property owners and threatened by poaching.

Duncan woman has pleaded guilty in the April 1, 2012 hit-and-run traffic death of local teenager Daniel Hopkins.

Lorna Paige, a Cowichan Tribes member, appeared Monday before Victoria’s B.C. Supreme Court Justice Douglas Halfyard to plead guilty to a charge of failing to stop at an accident scene involving death.

Paige is also charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

“Subject to sentencing being completed on the charge she pleaded guilty on, Crown will not be proceeding on the other two charges,” Crown counsel Neil MacKenzie said.

Paige’s case has been adjourned until April 28 to fix a date for her sentencing. Sentencing proceedings will see Crown suggest a sentence, MacKenzie explained.

“Court will determine what’s an appropriate sentence,” he said, noting factors typically taken into account include precedence, the case’s exact circumstances, and more.

Court action focused on whether the accused fled the scene of the early morning accident on Boys Road when Hopkins was hit. Paige, then 24, surrendered herself 24 hours later to officers at North Cowichan/Duncan’s RCMP detachment.

At around 5:30 a.m. that tragic day, Mounties found Hopkins laying on the road with serious injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Cowichan District Hospital, then to Victoria General.

He was listed in critical condition and placed on life support, but died at around 8 p.m. the same day.

CVRD boasting a carbon neutral 2013

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is boasting success in an area where most of the world is struggling.

For 2013, it claims to be carbon neutral.

In a media release issued Tuesday, CVRD senior environmental analyst Kuan Jian Foo said the regional district has met all its commitments under the B.C. Climate Action Charter.

According to the release, CVRD operations

released 1,674 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This included carbon burning that occurred operating recreation centres, managing and maintaining parks, solid waste collection and disposal, water management, emergency services, planning and bylaw enforcement and corporate operations.

The district counteracted that by switching to electric heat pumps in several facilities, supplementing

diesel fuel with local biodiesel and participating in a number of community-based offset projects.

The latter included organic waste diversion from the landfill to local composting facilities and supporting a community fuel-switching project at The Hub at Cowichan Station, which now uses a geothermal heating system.

ith the bittersweet results of the 2013 fading into the background, Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley is focused on 2014.

Routley considers election night “a highlight and a lowlight at the same time,” as he was re-elected while watching the rival B.C. Liberal Party win a surprise majority.

“I’m thankful to the good people of the Cowichan Valley for the opportunity to represent them again in legislature,” he said. “Obviously, politicians hope to see the opportunity be in power, so from that point of view, it was disappointing we won’t have the opportunity to make change in areas we see as growing issues in the province today.”

One example is the sad fact that B.C. has been one of the highestranked provinces in Canada in food bank use.

“We’ve seen the number of people rise to 94,000 people in B.C. in 2013 — that’s not a record any government should want on their file,” he said.

“One in three of those was a child.

And if you include teenagers under the age of 18, that number rises to one in two. We do have this rising gap between the very rich and those living near the bottom of the wage scale.”

Routley also identified rising BC Ferries and BC Hydro rates as important issues in the past year, and moving forward.

Another concern for Routley is health care and hospital overcrowding.

“The numbers are beyond the point where if we had any crisis at all, we’re already full and overflowing at our hospital in the Cowichan Valley,” he said. “The government is not doing enough to deal with health care in the Cowichan Valley and in B.C. These are the kind of issues I hope to raise now that the Legislature is finally going back.”

Donation fund opened to help family of accident victim Peter W. Rusland

A

financial-donation account has been opened for the struggling young family of Cowichan’s late Miles Phillips.

“We are trying to raise some money for his wife and daughters after the untimely passing of Miles,” fund organizer and friend Chad Rutherford told the News Leader Pictorial.

There was $1,821 in the account at press time

Wednesday.

“With Miles just finishing his MBA, and doing mostly social and environmental work for a living, which can be a labour of love, it has left (wife) Angela (nee Marston) and his daughters in a bit of a financial situation.”

Phillips, 48, of Cobble Hill, died in a local car accident Jan. 23.

“Miles’ death left his wife and family in a really tough spot,” said Rutherford, concerned about Angela and her daughters Jasmin, 15, and Autumn, 12.

“They had no life insurance, and Miles

mainly worked for non-profits.”

Rutherford said he got to know Phillips several years ago after Rutherford’s fiance trained Phillips and Angela — who’s now earning her arts degree — to represent Canada at the amateur world triathlon championships.

Family man Phillips earned respect from valley folks involved with green fuels, men’s issues, alternative farming and building, plus First Nations arts and culture.

Fuller Lake Arena icemaker Kevin Wheeler of Chemainus was part of the 18-man NHL ice crew that turned B.C. Place Stadium into a hockey rink for the NHL Heritage Classic on Sunday, March 2. work with the NHL.” Wheeler started work Feb. 24, joining the NHL ice crew of 18, who came from across Canada. Leading up to the game, he worked 13-hour night shifts building the rink, after another crew built the boards, glass and logos during the day.

“It was very enjoyable,” he said. “It was very hard, probably the hardest thing I’ve done in my life, but it was knowing I was building an ice rink for an NHL game at B.C. Place.

And also knowing there was a game on Sunday and you had to get it done; you enjoy yourself, but it’s also hard work. The crew was really good; we bonded really quickly.”

“I was on the benches and thinking ‘wow, I’m here working with the NHL ice crew’ and everything was going off really well. I think the big thing is we really were a team.”

“It’s neat learning tips and tricks from other people and making new friendships with people who do the same thing as I do,” he said. “We obviously all care about the ice and giving a good product and player safety. The result of the game was really irrelevant to me; I wanted it to be a good game and a good atmosphere for the fans.

“I think everyone had a good time, never mind the score.”

t’s always been Kevin Wheeler’s dream to make ice for the NHL. The Fuller Lake Arena icemaker fulfilled that dream March 2 in one of the biggest games of the year when he worked as part of the ice crew for the NHL Heritage Classic in Vancouver.

The Ottawa Senators came from behind to beat the Canucks 4-2 in front of more than 54,000 fans at B.C. Place Stadium.

Wheeler, who lives in Chemainus, was part of the crew that built the ice leading up to the game, kept the ice surface clean during the game and took it down afterward.

This amazing opportunity came after he received a call in November from a friend from the NHL with whom he had volunteered during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

“I was proud and honoured they would consider getting me to do it and join the team,” he said.

Wheeler has been working for the Municipality of North Cowichan for almost eight years, and has been an icemaker for 13. In 2010, he volunteered in the same role for Vancouver Winter Olympic hockey games.

“This is what I do; it’s what my dad used to do,” he said. “I’d go help my dad from the time I was a kid. I’d go and help him clean up; he’d pay me with hockey cards, and I’d clean the bleachers. I’d go and sweep the boards before they put the brooms on Zambonis, and goal judge and time keep.

Shawnigan unites with pens in hand Dwight school: Neighbours gather in solidarity for letterwriting campaign against soil dump

here may be at least one positive to the Shawnigan Lake soil dump controversy.

It seems to be bringing some people closer together.

On March 4, Shawnigan area residents gathered on the campus of Dwight School Canada to pen more than 100 letters to the provincial government to voice their concerns.

Those taking part are concerned the proposal to dump and treat five million tonnes of contaminated soil at South Island Aggregates site on Stebbings Road poses a threat to the lake.

Students of Dwight School and area residents teamed up recently in a letter-writing campaign against the SIA soil dump proposal.

“This is a matter that keeps me lying awake at night wondering how I can contribute to the preservation of this lake as a 17-year-old,” one student wrote.

“As a community, we should not be forced to assume responsibility for a situation that has come up as a convenient opportunity for other communities, nor should the needs of the many suffer for the financial gain of a business standing to add extra profit from an already lucrative project,” an area

hat a difference a couple of words can make.

Without them, a recent regional board wage-freeze motion means Cowichan Valley Regional District managers won’t be paid at all this year.

But don’t expect those brass hats with caps in hand at valley food banks anytime soon.

Shawnigan Lake Director Bruce Fraser dismissed resident Larry Anderson’s qualms with a Nov. 13 motion stating “there be no remuneration or general wage increase in 2014 for directors, chief administrative officer, and general managers ...”

Of course, the key phrase is “no remuneration,” one which Fraser insists can’t be taken at face value.

“That’s silly hair splitting,” Fraser said of the adopted motion, quoted verbatim by Anderson.

“Obviously, no one intended that (staff would not get paid).

“The intention is not to increase funding to those two categories (elected directors, senior staffers) of expenditures.”

Anderson (see his letter, page nine) is basically frustrated with what he saw as the CVRD’s slip-shod bylaw writing.

No directors or senior staffers have reported missing paycheques.

Letter writers also urged the government to listen to the people and work with the CVRD to find an alternative site.

According to Furstenau, Shawnigan’s two international schools are in particular danger of economic harm from the contaminated soil site, as they recruit students from all over the world based partly on the perception of Shawnigan Lake being a healthy environment for young people.

The group also ex-

tended an invitation to members of the provincial cabinet to come to Dwight to speak to the concerns directly.

Meanwhile, the Leora Nugent family has pledged to match donations to help the Shawnigan Residents Association’s legal battle against the soil dump dollar-fordollar to a maximum of $10,000.

An Environmental Appeal Board hearing continues in Victoria on whether to reverse an August decision to allow the dump.

Tough hospital decision needs transparency

Site selection: location will be a tough choice

O

ne thing is virtually guaranteed about the new Cowichan District Hospital site: it won’t be unanimously endorsed by everyone.

That’s because the site cannot be chosen in a vaccuum and the perfect location likely doesn’t exist.

Which makes it crucial that the public understands what the needs of the hospital are, what options are out there and that NIMBYism is not an option.

There are only so many properties big enough, accessible enough and near enough to the Duncan core to qualify. And not all of them are going to be for sale.

Public needs terms of reference for the hospito understand talThe site are good ones.

Ideally, there is a property available the reasons above the flood plain within five or 10 for chosen site minutes from the downtown core with safe, convenient access to either Highway 1 or Highway 18. Ideally, the site is in a quiet area outside the ALR and is not being currently used. Ideally, the site has all the physical attributes that make it suitable for building and servicing, and neighbours that are compatible with a hospital.

Once you check all those boxes, you’ll be lucky if you have more than a handful of choices in front of you. In fact, you may be forced to consider sites that are lacking in one or more of those areas.

Officials need to be open with the public about this process. They are off to a good start with their expressions of interest. The transparency should continue with a list of sites that are put forward, followed by the lists of the pluses and minuses of each site.

Co-operation and consensus are crucial here — not just within the boardrooms and discussion groups, but within the community as a whole.

This tough decision should bind the community, not bend it.

One thing has become clear from years of living in a democracy: speaking out does not always lead to getting your way, but it is far more effective than saying nothing at all.

The continued lobbying being done by Shawnigan residents in a bid to protect their water supply may not convince the Environmental Appeal Board. But it may eventually catch the right ear at the right time and lead to permit rejection.

am happily ensconced in downtown Duncan in a place I fondly call the watchtower.

It came by its name because the building is of watchtower-like construction and there is always something going on outside the windows.

A few days ago, I was woken way too early by the abnormal sound of silence, a quiet much like having a thick blanket thrown over my head.

Exploring beyond the confines of my bed the window view provided the answer: Duncan was blanketed with snow, snow deep enough to silence all noise.

The only sound was the almost indiscernible soft thud of huge snowflakes hitting the ground.

Returning to the warm memories of my bed I faded back into snowflake dreamland.

My dreamland visit was short-lived when

the snowy silence was sheared by the sounds of heavy machinery, and flashing lights found the gaps in my window blinds. Bed-shaking snowplow blades against cold asphalt added to the industrial disharmony.

Despite the cacophony I was comforted knowing city crews were out before most of us were even thinking about waking up, taking advantage of the city stillness to get it ready for the day ahead.

Out in force, they were working fast and hard to erase the effects of the fast-moving snowstorm that had dumped a good amount overnight. A storm so serious it caused (gasp) the Brew Pub to close early two days in a row.

By midday that same day the snow ended, downtown streets and sidewalks were almost bare of snow.

The small amount not moved by city workers quickly disappeared as the early spring sun finished the job. It was as if the storm had skipped the city.

I am quite proud of the city I call home and I am equally proud of the work city workers

What has yet to register with many people is that the environmental appeal board is not being asked to make a political decision.

Its job is to decide whether the proposed SIA soil dump will be safe.

It’s clear the people of Shawnigan don’t want the dump, but the number of letters the government receives will not make a difference.

What matters is the science.

do to look after the city. From snow clearing to plant-watering, weed-picking, hanging lights up, taking lights down, and doing things that they might not agree with because it is their job to do.

You don’t have to go far these days to hear a joke about city workers. They are told in every town and city, no matter the size.

A recent letter to the editor criticized city workers for taking their break at a local Tim Horton’s, a letter I considered unjustified and very ill-informed.

City workers are often painted with bad strokes, no matter whether it is for their coffee break habits, their huge paychecks, or the manner in which they work. Unhappy people always need scapegoats to criticize and city workers are there to provide.

Duncan city workers are far from this caricature.

They are the ones out in all weather, often doing the dirty work in difficult conditions.

They are the first responders in many situ-

ations. They were the front-line workers for exhaustive hours in the 2009 flood.

It is not just the public works crews that deserve commendation. Ccommissionaires are the faces you are most likely to meet if you have business or things to do downtown.

I remember the days when a commissionaire’s uniform meant a dour personality and probable parking ticket.

Nowadays we have Stu, our local Cape Breton’er shout-out guy. Always a smile, a hello from across the street or, if you get to know him a little better, a quick hand-to-hand coupled with a little bluenose wisdom.

Get to know your city workers. We are lucky to have them.

Say thanks sometimes.

Corporate greed killing our middle class

Dear editor This firing of staff at Sunridge Place has occurred before and, as far as I know, is a means of lowering staff wages to keep profits in the hands of the owners. This is the downside of ‘privatization’ and in particular, the downside of ‘privatizing’ health care. Staff, who are educated, hardworking, devoted and often raising families of their own have mortgages to pay, and are left with reduced wages/benefits and the stress of not knowing whether they will be re-hired. Meanwhile, the residents (our parents, grandparents and community members) end up getting the brunt of this powerplay by the ever-revolving door of privateers looking to make a bigger buck. The direct influence is that low morale affects resident care and the greater community at large.

Our once lucrative economy in B.C. could afford decent union wages due to the successful management of Crown corporations such as BC Hydro, B.C. Telephone, and B.C. Forests. Those industries once created hundreds of thousands of lucrative employment opportunities across the province. Instead, we now have a situation where privatization sends profits and jobs out of the country, or into the hands of a few corporate directors.

Such practices have removed our once-thriving middle class.

Traffic calming not going to change psycho drivers

Dear editor Cyclist Warren Chapman (Feb. 28) is 100% correct. All of this traffic calming narrowing at corners is just more of the purple Kool-aid the traffic engineers want us to drink, the same traffic engineers who use the 85th percentile when setting speeds.

Intersections are always the most dangerous for cyclists, and a narrowed intersection with bumpouts is just a narrower, dangerous intersection. Only a fool believes in the psychological traffic calming methods because motorists are already psycho.

Compassion for seniors cut along with discounts

Dear editor This is my take on the elimination of seniors’ discounts on the ferries: There is no way the powers that be would allow baby boomers’ wallets to escape

Baby boomers are the largest senior demographic in history, that we know. The boomer generation is huge compared to previous senior numbers.

Board members focused on the economic loss while ignoring the discount’s original purpose, to show economic compassion for seniors.

During discount days, until it is eliminated, you’ll find the ferries resemble floating senior centres, not an unpleasant experience. It appears those days will soon be gone, which is a travesty. Austerity is a proven failed practice by governments. Further, using this practice to gouge seniors in a particular generation is reprehensible.

Dear editor We had written then-CAO Warren Jones and Chairman Rob Hutchins to confirm that all concerned are in complete compliance with Board Motion 13-566 of Nov. 23. If they are not, we ask that all monies be repaid immediately into the CVRD general account. For those of you that may have forgotten, much was made and written about the senior officials and the directors having their salaries frozen for 2014 but, that is not what the motion only stated. It reads as follows: “It was moved and seconded that there be no remuneration or general increase in 2014 for Directors, the Chief Administrative Officer and General Managers;” In other words, all of the above are to receive no compensation for the entire year 2014. This has been checked with the Ministry of Culture Affairs who are responsible for the Local Government Act. They concur with our reading of the motion.

So, to conclude, we taxpayers want our money paid back now – we are totally fed up with this incessant practice of ignoring us, writing sloppy regulations and by-laws and just treating us like a limitless ATM. Larry Anderson Shawnigan Lake

he first Cowichan Valley Outdoor Boat Show is dropping anchor March 15 and 16 at Dean’s Marine, 5147 Polkey Rd. in Duncan.

Hosted by Dean’s Marine Ltd. and Van Isle Powerboat School & Brokerage, the purpose of the show is to promote the smaller marinerelated local businesses at a fraction of the cost compared to the larger international boat show venues.

Several businesses and groups are setting up shop at the show, including: Flagship Ford of Duncan; Coles Canvas; Harle Quin Embroidery; Bellevance Welding; Marine Insurance Centre; Central Boat Moving; Fibre Glass Done Right; Cowichan Valley Power Squadron; Grade 6 fundraising event for Camp Qwanoes; and Bons Yacht Services.

There will also be used boats to view and offers will be taken on-site. Van Isle Powerboat will have further listings of boats and yachts docked at local marinas.

Dean’s Marine is a marine repair and boat storage business that teamed up with Van Isle to make the show happen.

“I have been a boater my whole life, growing up on the many beautiful lakes of Ontario through the Trent Severn Waterway, Rideau Canal and ventured in Georgian Bay,’’ noted Van Isle’s Derek Card in a submission to the News Leader Pictorial.

Card is a boatswain by trade who served the country for 22 years.

During that time with the Royal Canadian Navy, he circumnavigated the entire Pacific Rim while based out of CFB Esquimalt.

Card is now self-employed.

“Not only do I have the tools to sell your boat, find you a new boat of your choice. I also have the knowledge and ability to certify you as a pleasure craft operator if you choose my services to educate you for onthe-water navigation practical training,’’ he indicated.

The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board.

That’s gotta tell you something.

mong my first assignments at the Leader in 1970 were wedding and social write-ups contrived from handwritten information submitted on forms.

“Stringers” sent or carried in reports on areas around the valley, and the bulky weekly devoted several pages to all kinds of social events.

Thus it had been since its birth in 1905 and such reporting provided opportunities for those living in Chemainus, for example, to read about what was happening in Cobble Hill. And in March 1945, it was comforting to know life carried on after almost six years of war.

“One of the jolliest social affairs of the season took place… when the staff of Queen Alexandra Solarium (now part of Brentwood College) entertained its friends,” reported the Leader. The occasion consisted of a short concert followed by a dance. Maj. Skinner organized card games.

And cards were the entertainment as well, as the Cobble Hill branch of the Women’s Institute observed Founder’s Day. Winners at whist were Mrs. C. A. Whittle, Mrs. G. Orr, Mrs. William Bell and Mrs. Maitland. A dance in Cobble Hill Hall, organized by Tommy Boyles and with Pitt’s orchestra from Victoria, ended the week.

Recent results of one study showed the two methods were about equal in helping people stop smoking but the success rate was relatively low with both. E-cigarettes have still not been OK’d by Health Canada due to concerns about the effects of long-term use.

Having a non-cancerous enlarged prostate gland can cause more frequent urination. If this is a problem, try restricting caffeine-containing and alcoholic fluids in the evening. When you do urinate, empty the bladder completely and have your doctor or pharmacist check your medications. Some meds make stimulate more urine flow. And try to relax. bill.

Point recently got home from Brazil to find a $1,050 hydro bill — despite being away for that three-month billing period.

“They said they’d suspend my account until they investigate,” he fumed, blaming what he believed was a smart meter. So Point was surprised when Hydro staff said Tuesday his side of his duplex carries an old analog meter.

Still, neither meter would explain his skyhigh invoice.

“I’ve had no bill exceeding $400 in the past four years,” Point said of the bill that’s about 20 times his usual tab. “My

bills are usually around $50, as I burn wood to heat my house in the winter, and I am very energy-conscious.

“The rep at their office was steadfast in his explanation about their meters not making mistakes; he simply refused to believe what I was telling him — that is, until I explained to him that I was on vacation in Brazil. I was away for the entire period listed in their invoice. How will they rectify this?”

Hydro’s Ted Olynyk agreed the tally on Point’s analog bill is a mystery, and requires further investigation by his staff.

“It’s an accurate reading, and the meter’s functioning properly. It could be wiring issues.”

Unlikely, noted Point.

“There has been no wiring work here since this cabin was built three or four years ago.”

invoice would be less with a faulty analog unit. “If anything, it would slow down.”

He explained such mistakes can be dodged with smart meters.

“When (smart meter) information is sent, we’re eliminating misreads.”

And Hydro staff can “walk customers through steps about their billing, and determine what the (error) cause is.”

Point wasn’t pleased with those steps.

“They still refused to admit any wrongdoing. I asked them if they would have returned my money if I had paid the bill, and they said they would have made the correction in the next meter reading.”

That left him dubious about smart meters Hydro brass insists are accurate.

“We’ve had about 387 new smart

meters tested because people disputed their accuracy,” said Olynyk, “and all came back without a problem.”

Meters across the country — for instance, gas and electric units — are governed by Measurements Canada, he noted. That’s cold comfort to Point.

“This begs the question: how would they have known about the erroneous meter reading? The answer is simply they could not, nor would not have known.”

Furthermore, “it makes me wonder what future meter readings will be.”

“If they’re even a little off, it’s very concerning,” said Point.

“How many other people are not paying attention and just paying their bills?”

Olynyk urged folks with billing concerns to call 1-800-bchydro for help and advice.

aple Bay’s landmark Brigantine Pub has been bought by two Vancouver Island guys, from Cowichan’s legendary Irish publican, Brian Leckie.

He said Saturday the Brig’s sale should close on March 31.

“It isn’t sad, really; it was time to go,” said Leckie who had marketed the seaside Brig, and its beerand-wine store, for several years with a price tag of more than $1 million.

“One buyer lives in Crofton, the other lives in Ladysmith,” he told the News Leader Pictorial, declining to name the new owners of the pub he’s owned for some 23 years.

“I’ve known them for quite a while.”

Long enough to know they plan to close the Brig for April, and do a makeover of its bar and kitchen.

Leckie didn’t expect staff changes in the pub that’s hosted a cocktail of music over the years — including rockin’ Sunday Night Jams by Monte and the Beaumonts, Eugene Smith and the White Boys, the Cookie Monsters, and the McCandless Family.

Irish banjo balladeer Chuck McCandless and his tuneful clan will run the Sunday, March 16 side of Leckie’s famous St. Paddy’s Day bash, chased by Irish dancing and more March 17.

“It’ll be a big one again this year,” Leckie, a former Irish Constabulary member, promised.

“The new owners would be crazy not to carry on with music here,” said Leckie, who has used the Brig’s basement suite as his second pad for years, while his wife held fort at their mainland home.

Even so, the jolly shamrock toasted his buyers and employees.

“What will I miss most?

Everything; the people and the staff,” he said.

Local music organizer Gary Rivest is arranging a March 23 event called Last Call At The Brig. It will star the pub’s many jammers over the years.

Cracking Canada’s small car conundrum

GENEVA, Switzerland - Small cars are huge here in Europe, if not in size certainly in numbers. Everywhere you turn, it seems there is either a Ford Fiesta or an Opel Astra (the General Motors subsidiary) about to cross your path. If it is not those examples, there are any number of other similar sized economy cars from the likes of Citroen, VW, and Peugeot buzzing by. Micro cars such as the tiny Smart, with which we are familiar, and even smaller vehicles zip into roadside parking spots where previously only a motorcycle would park.

My two-prong mission at the Geneva Motor Show was to view small cars we might see sometime soon and others we never will see but wish we could! Then ponder whether small cars will ever catch on here in the way they have in Europe.

There was something familiar about the first car I encountered in the giant Palexpo show buildings. Ah yes, a European version of the trusty Honda Civic – Canada’s hottest seller in that market segment. I am sure Honda Canada would sell more if they resembled the very hot Type R concept, which is destined to be a racer.

All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here.

And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space.

While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle.

And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong.

Confessions of a Curber wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically.

As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents.

Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report.

That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet.

A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!?

Need money back now!!!”

I panicked. But not for long.

I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out.

I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room.

So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house.

Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired.

I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it.

I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days.

This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist.

I got a text message from a woman across town.

I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled.

When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute.

To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

Classic lookalikes sell at (almost) bargain prices

The Pebble Beach auctions are generally not the place for bargain hunters.

It’s nothing unusual for $300 million in automotive merchandise to change hands with some lots bringing more than $10 million and a staggering 100plus cars capable of cracking the $1 million mark.

Just 20 or 30 years ago, many of these cars were attainable to people of ordinary means. So what’s an ordinary mortal whose been priced out of the Ferrari and Cobra market to do? Look at some alternatives that provide 90 percent of the bang for 5 percent of the buck. Here are some of our favorites: 1963 Shelby Cobra/1992 Dodge Viper: Everybody loves a Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s idea of stuffing an American V-8 in a lightweight British sports car was an instant hit. The trouble is, if you didn’t buy one in the early 1980s when they were about $30,000, your chances of acquiring one are pretty slim for much less than a million. So, instead of a Cobra replica you’ll always have to make excuses for, why not buy its spiritual successor, the Dodge Viper? Early examples of this V-10 powered, raw and uncompromising, car can still be had for less than what Cobras were selling for 30 years ago.

Back in the 1960s, Canadian Frank Reisner dreamed of building Ferrari-like GT cars with American V-8 power. His Intermeccanica Italia roadster hit the mark in terms of Ferrari-like style — the bodies were even built in Italy — but in place of a complex and expensive V-12, most had small-block Ford V-8 power, with some tuned by the famous American race shop Holman and Moody.

About 400 Italias were built, and they’re not cheap (RM Auctions sold one in 2007 for $44,000). They cost a fraction of the Ferrari but have most of the looks and performance, if not the pedigree.

Celebrated Victoria jazz pianist, vocalist and educator Jerry Bryant joins Cowichan singer Carol Jarvie for an intimate concert that explores the Great American Songbook Sunday in Crofton.

Jarvie is a mainstay of the Cowichan Valley jazz scene. Bryant, who turns 91 next month, has probably had more influence on the south Island jazz scene than any other individual.

The show runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crofton Hotel. Admission is $10.

here’s something to be said about reliving the past by listening to legendary music.

It’s even better when that act’s being brought back to the stage by a talented tribute artist.

Take the two tribute shows about to grace the Cowichan Theatre stage, Elvis and Anne Murray, for example.

The Elvis, Elvis, Elvis: An American Trilogy event takes place Saturday, March 22 promising the rock legend will rise from the dead three times.

“The resurrections will come in the form of three of the best Elvis Tribute Artists on the planet: Chris Connor, Ted Torres and Brandon Bennett each playing various stages of the King’s career in the world-

famous tribute concert,” states promotional material.

“The middle man in the show portrays the sexy, leather-suited performer who always heightens the anxiety level of an already excited audience,” states promotional material.

“A couple of female singers are added for background and the on-stage interaction gets noticeably upbeat.”

Most audience members have never likely had the opportunity of seeing The King live.

“This show is about as close to the real thing as they’re ever going to see,” promise promoters.

And coincidentally, it’s been said one of Presley’s favourite female singers was Murray, who’s still kicking, but has retired from the music industry.

“Murray was the first Canadian female solo artist to go number one on the American Billboard chart, sell a gold record in both Canada and the U.S., and the first woman and first Canadian to win album of the year.”

She’s also won 24 Juno Awards

and four Grammy Awards during her 40-year career.

Not only that, but the Nova Scotia’s girl next door sold 54 million albums with 33 number-one singles.

And Cowichanians will get to relive Murray’s successful career through tribute act Laura Gillespie Tuesday, March 25.

The show, Snowbird: Tribute to Anne Murray, takes audience members through four decades of hits, career highlights and hits like Cotton Jenny, Could I Have This Dance, What About Me, and the one that started it all, Snowbird.

“Fellow Nova Scotian, Laura Gillespie, along with her amazing band Topaz, complement and deliver a genuine reproduction,” states promotional material.

“Snowbird is a cavalcade of nonstop hits and imagery that will instantly transport you through time.”

The Elvis trilogy tribute takes place on March 22 from 8 to 10 p.m. and the Anne Murray/band act takes the stage from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 25.

“If I knew you felt that way, we would have come back sooner,” Cook joked with his adoring crowd that packed the last stop in his Blue Guitar Tour.

He and his synchronized squad performed a string of numbers from Cook’s various recordings boasting worldwide appeal.

Backed by guitar czar Nicolas Hernandez, bassist Dennis Mohammed, percussionist Chendy Leon, and violinist/accordionist Chris Church — who has also tamed an Armenian duduk flute — Cook gave his crowd more than their $45 worth.

The string sorcerer swung a guitar, not a wand, to hypnotize Saturday’s audience.

It was literally a string-poppin’ good time during the band’s

rumba party that opened with Havana.

It closed with Simon and Garfunkel’s sly Cecilia, a lovely a cappella version of Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet, and The Beatles’ upbeat treat Two Of Us. Hopefully it’s not another five years before Cook returns to Cowichan.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) will be hosting a public information meeting regarding Fisher Road Recycling’s (FRR’s) operation in Cobble Hill. The company has applied to amend its current Waste Stream Management Licence, as outlined in the below notice. This public meeting is part of a broader consultation process and intends to provide an opportunity for the public to ask questions directly, and for the CVRD to gather comments on FRR’s amendment application.

This is to notify all concerned parties that Fisher Road Holdings Ltd. is applying for an amendment to its current licence under CVRD Bylaw 2570 – Solid Waste Management Licensing Bylaw, 2004. The following summary of key changes is provided for public notification and solicitation of comments related to the application.

Proposed amendment to current licence: 1. Compost operation: a. to increase annual throughput from the currently Licensed 10,890 tonnes to design capacity of 18,000 tonnes. The facility has been operating at this higher capacity on a temporary basis for the past 6 months. b. to increase volume of finished Class A compost (screened) permitted on-site* at any one-time from 2,640 to 4,400 tonnes maximum, to allow for seasonal fluctuations.

2. Recycling operation: a. Add new material category: Tar & Gravel Roofing, maximum 15 tonnes on-site and 300 tonnes annual throughput; b. Combine current categories for Garbage (Commercial, Residential, Compost Incidentals) and Mixed Loads (containing garbage and recyclables to be sorted) into one ‘General Refuse’ category, to allow for more effective reporting; c. Allow for new ‘General Refuse’ category to consist of all garbage, or a combination of garbage and recyclables, keeping the same combined maximum annual throughput of 5,485 tonnes**. This permits operator greater flexibility to meet local demand; and, d. Increase ‘General Refuse’ tonnage from the combined categories permitted on-site at any one-time from 19.8 to 50 tonnes maximum*** to allow operator use of fewer, but more efficient trailers. * All compost materials of any sort are stored on concrete pads with leachate collection and containment. **Approximately equivalent to shipping 3 trailer loads of 35 tonnes each per week. ***Any materials that may be odourous or attract rodents can only be stored inside the enclosed composting building.

owichan’s Doyle brothers are climbing the ladder of success quickly.

Shawnigan Lake’s Aidan Doyle, 12, and Brennan Doyle 10, both came home from Abbotsford as provincial bouldering champions. Both went undefeated during the season in their respective age groups — Aidan in 12-13 boys and Brennan in 11 and under boys.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing performed without the use of ropes or harnesses. The path taken to complete the climb is usually less than 20 feet tall and involves a series of moves to challenge the physical and mental ability of the climber.

The Doyles practice up to 10 hours a week in the three climbing disciplines — bouldering, ropes and speed. Ethan Fagan of Cowichan Secondary placed fifth in his age group.

• The Brentwood College senior girls’ basketball team finished its season with two losses at the Island championships. The first game was against provincially-ranked Mark Isfeld and the second against Nanaimo District.

“We knew the game against Isfeld was going to be a challenge, but liked our chances against NDSS,’’ noted coach Jordan Warner. “Unfortunately, we struggled defensively against their post player and to find our rhythm offensively against their interior strength.’’

verybody has to start somewhere and the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club’s junior division is proving ideal for young kids interested in trying out the sport.

Enrollment in the division for youngsters nine to 13 years of age doubled in its second year to 40 elementary grapplers. That led nicely into the club’s elementary wrestling play day at Duncan Christian School last week.

“We’re going to make it an annual event,’’ said CVWC head coach Nick Zuback. “Everything went smoothly at DCS. We were really pleased they opened their doors.’’

A total of 71 kids took part and “it opened their eyes,’’ said Zuback.

In addition, “the older kids reffing and coaching, it was nice to see that, giving back to the program,’’ he added.

Junior division coach Rick Bryan has visited close to 15 schools the last two years and giving all classes an introductory session.

“The response has been amazing,’’ noted Bryan. “Most schools report huge enthusiasm among both kids and teachers. In fact, many schools have already booked us for a second season. Several schools are discussing forming their own wrestling teams.’’

The play day had wrestlers representing DCS, Queen of Angels, the CVWC and even Nanaimo.

“Every child that wrestled got a medal,’’ said Zuback. “There was

gold, silver and bronze for the rest of the kids.’’

Meanwhile, the club held its annual awards banquet last Wednesday.

The boy and girl winners in each category were: Jimmy Wyld and Molly O’Donnell (heart); Kayden Dorma and Stephanie Mould (most improved); Daniel Wanner and Hannah Tuplin (rookies of the year); Aidan Tuplin and Olive Kiruiro (sportsmanship); Owen Pite and Rayne Hankins (inspirational/leadership); and Nolan Mitchell and Andrea Morris (most outstanding wrestlers).

Natalia Garriock, 17, and Laura Kissack, 16, represented the club well and attained tremendous results.

Garriock earned one personal best and three seasonal personal bests. She’s working towards the Canadian trials for the Pan Pacific championships and Commonwealth Games April 2 to 5.

Garriock’s best placing was an eighth overall and winner of the B final in the 50-metre fly. She was also 13th overall in the 100 fly.

Kissack was racing at the competition for the first time and managed one personal best despite not being in the water the week before the event due to illness.

“We are excited for the performances of our two most senior swimmers being able to race at the second highest level of swimming in Canada,’’ noted Stingrays’ coach Leanne Sirup.

“Their personal bests achieved at this level requires a greater mental strength, as each race can be as close as having eight swimmers ranging in .10 seconds from start to finish. For perspective, that is first place to eighth place in a race lasting more than a minute where all the competitors’ final times are separated by no more than literally a blink of an eye.’’

A good offense started with a strong defence for the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association’s U14 Silver boys’ soccer team.

“We had a very good team,’’ said coach Amrit Manhas. “It was very good defence. The kids this year were a treat to be around.’’

Manhas had the luxury of interchanging Riley Wainman, Odhan Manhas, Noah Landry, Colin Fairbairn, Dalton Battye, Dawson Parkin, Pearsen Moreside and Adam Brownlow in defensive positions and the team didn’t miss a beat.

Cowichan went undefeated in

league play and won the Lower Island Cup for its division against Silver and Bronze teams.

The team got bumped up to the Gold level for the District Cup and lost 4-1 to Gorge. “For not seeing that level before, they were a little bit quicker than us,’’ said Amrit Manhas.

hese are banner days for the Cowichan Valley Soccer Association with three teams qualifying for the Provincial B Cup playdowns.

That’s the first time three CVSA teams have all qualified for provincials in the same season, according to president Bill Keserich.

“All three were also league champions in their divisions as well,’’ he pointed out.

The provincials will all take place during July. But there’s some other business for the teams in April as well, with Coastal Cup semifinals against Lower Mainland teams.

Dates and sites of the April games are yet to be determined.

Coach David Doughty’s U16 Gold Cowichan Valley Spartans claimed the Lower Island B Cup trophy with a 2-1 win over Gorge.

Goals were scored by Matt Gurzinski and Lucas Grosse while Nathaniel White was heroic in goal, as he has been all season.

Doughty’s team went undefeated during league play with 11 wins and three ties for a nine-point advantage on Gorge.

Doughty’s been with the same basic group of players for three seasons.

“They’ve progressed over the last three years,’’ he said.

His team won the District Cup at U14 the first two years and added the Lower Island B Cup and League Cup this year.

“We’ve won four Cups in three years,’’ raved Doughty.

He’s looking forward to the big games ahead.

“Not knowing what the Vancouver teams play like, I would say we have a 50-50 chance at the moment,’’

“Practices are still going to be going on every week. I’m not going to let them off the hook.’’

The U15 Gold Cowichan Grizzlies boys won all 17 games in the Lower Island league and also took the Lower Island final of the B Cup playoffs, leading to a dramatic 1-0 win over Nanaimo for the Island championship.

“The Island final was a fantastic game,’’ noted coach Al Longair. “It went down to under a minute left in the second half of overtime play before the boys put together a series of quick short passes to send our striker, Brendan Kerwin, in behind their defence.

It’s the second year Longair and Ron Lederer have coached the basic same group of boys. The Cowichan Chaos U14 girls, under the direction of Brian Johnston and Ted Zinkan, joined the qualifiers with a 6-0 win over Comox in the Island final game.

“It was our best performance of the year,’’’ said Johnston. “We just played very well.

“It’s quite a strong team. We’re going to move a level up next year which is probably the right fit.’’

Cowichan won its previous game 4-2 in overtime over Bays to reach that stage. It was 2-0 for Cowichan

at halftime on a small field but that’s “not really our comfort zone,’’ said Johnston. “It played a little bit more to their advantage.’’

Bays did indeed fight back with two second-half goals to force overtime.

But Cowichan made a great response in overtime with two goals in the first five minutes.

“The second 10 minutes, we just shut her down,’’ said Johnston.

“They didn’t really have much.’’

Over the two games, Robyn Zinkan was electrifying with five goals while Emma DeWit scored two goals and assisted on three others in the Island final. Backs Kristen Banasch, Danielle Wince, Kara Labelle and Kylie Kidd all played well.

t’s more than the usual four-pointer when the Cowichan Rugby Club’s Div. 1 men’s team takes on the Nanaimo Hornets Saturday at the Herd Road Grounds at 2:30 p.m.

Due to two previously cancelled matches because of the snow, the match will be worth double the points in the standings.

It’ll be the end of a triple-header that starts at 11:30 a.m. with the Cowichan women taking on Nanaimo followed by the Cowichan Thirds against a newly-formed Vancouver Island University team at 1 p.m.

It’s been hard for the Div. 1 Cowichan men to gain any momentum since play resumed

Lots at stake: Div. 1 game will feature double the points due to recent game cancellations

after the new year with a game here and a cancellation there.

Comox forfeited its game to Cowichan last weekend, citing a lack of healthy bodies. The bonus point win thus pushed Cowichan into a first-place tie, but denied the team a chance at some much-needed game time.

The Third XV went ahead Sunday against an undermanned Castaways-Wanderers side that was five players short. Cowichan loaned Castaways the required number of players to make it a 15-aside game.

Cowichan kept its unbeaten season going

with a solid 46-17 victory. Great games were played by Ryan Spooner and Ty Jones in the forwards and Will Wheaton and Cam Hall in the backs.

The Cowichan Firsts and Thirds travelled to Victoria the previous weekend for games.

The Thirds went against the UVic Saxons and the game ended in a well-earned 22-22 tie.

The Firsts made it a rare day of ties with a 12-12 result against Velox under very difficult circumstances.

“Despite playing well enough to win two

matches, we were disappointed to come away with a tie and leave two much-needed points on the field,’’ noted coach Gord McGeachy.

The Firsts controlled huge amounts of possession and territory but found themselves trailing 7-0 at halftime.

The second half started with a bang, as Louis Gudmundseth crossed over for an unconverted try. Cowichan kept up the pressure and took its first lead of the game 15 minutes later when Peter Budina scored a try converted by Owen Wood.

“This was followed shortly by a few defensive mistakes which ultimately led to Velox scoring a well-earned try, bringing the score level 12-12,’’ McGeachy pointed out.

“We continued to apply pressure and missed several chances to secure the win.’’
