even something as simple as putting up a sign on Johnston Road directing people to turn left for the beach would be a way of promoting Canal Beach.

“For the most part, I think you’re going to find a community that supports this.”

Douglas said he doesn’t think that extended to his council. “There are some people on council that have no appreciation for this waterfront space.

There’s been interest from other parties to acquire it for a log sort. I think it might be an ulterior motive on council’s part.

Once they put the pier in it would be difficult to sell it back to industry,” he said.

“There are people on council who feel the waterfront is just for mills or log sorts.”

Solda said council does support the beach. She has circulated a note that states: “Last year we invested $100,000 in the beach to have the unsafe deck taken off the pier and gravel put in. We started this year with the Polar Bear Swim and passed a motion to join with other groups to put on a paddle board race in June.

“We’ve since had offers from three service clubs to invest in the beach and have formed a working group of two councillors... to work with them and our neighbours to come up with a plan and direction for the beach.

“This will maximize the benefits to the beach and minimize the taxpayer expense.”

Douglas said the money is available, it was tentatively budgeted and it should be spent as requested.

“Why on earth (council) wouldn’t embrace something that’s so well supported by using funds that won’t affect the tax bracket this year is beyond me,” he said.

Canal Beach will be open to the public and work will continue this summer despite Port Alberni city council’s decision not to spend $500,000 to resurface the old Alberni Plywood pier this year.

Councillor Cindy Solda attributed the confusion to some statements Mayor John Douglas made in another media source, that made it sound like the park would not be available.

“We’re finding it really frustrating,” she said.

“There are a lot of positives. (The mayor) should have said even though we’re cutting funding, there’s a lot of good stuff coming from service groups.”

Coun. Dan Washington and Hira Chopra were asked last month to investigate whether service clubs could help finance some projects at Canal Beach. Washington said he has already received support from both the Kiwanis and Gyro clubs, and was to make a presentation to the Port Alberni Rotary Club on Thursday, after the News went to press.

“The Kiwanis already met with the mayor and Scott Kenny in early January,” Washington said. “The Gyro club said if you’re (Kiwanis) going to do something then we’ll do something. There’s a lot of interest from service groups.

“What I pitched at the council meeting was give me a year and see what I can do,” Washington said.

Parks, Recreation and Heritage director Scott Kenny said there are projects available that services clubs could easily fund, such as permanent washroom facilities, a playground, a gazebo, more picnic tables or even a caretaker’s building in the long term. However, a

larger project like the pier would be beyond their scope, he said.

With the cut in funding, there is nothing official on the books for improvements to the beach this year. Parks and rec will continue to work on the newly seeded grassy area, and the pier has been fenced off and signs erected warning people to keep off.

There is a porta-potty and some trash cans on site, and his department will look at starting the memorial park bench program.

There are no conceptual drawings for the beach, nor for resurfacing the pier, Kenny said. But a design and cost estimates can still be done this year.

“A lot of people like what’s going on down there,” he said.

“That pier could be a jewel,” Bud Collins said.

“We’ll do whatever we have to, to support the development of this beach,” Lyn said, adding they have been invested community members in Canal Beach “right from the day we helped with the cleanup.”

The Collinses were two of a dozen people enjoying the warm weather at the beach on Monday afternoon.

chool District 70 trustees have voted to close two Alberni Valley elementary schools and see all others retain their current configurations.

Trustees voted 4-3 to close Gill and Eighth Avenue elementary schools in September.

VAST will move to Eighth Avenue. Wood Elementary School— which many parents feared would also be on the chopping block—will remain open. Middle schools will remain.

SD 70 chair Larry Ransom later said that this scenario had never been brought to the public nor cost

estimated by district staff.

“This is not a magic bullet, there is still work to be done,” said trustee John Bennie, who moved the motion to close Gill and Eighth Avenue.

“But this gets us on the way to the K-7, 8-12 goal.”

The move accomplishes several things, Bennie said.

Savings are realized with the closing of two schools. ADSS is spared an influx of Grade 8s, which it can’t accommodate.

The district saves on the VAST lease as well.

And savings will also be realized with a two-week spring break approved by trustees earlier in the meeting.

But not closing Wood elementary was front and centre in Bennie’s move. “I learned two things last year: don’t close Wood school, and not to move French

Immersion at Alberni elementary,” he said.

Wood is the last elementary school in the city centre and has a population that is best served by leaving Wood open, he said. As well, Wood students benefit from all the things that SD70 staff said students at the new ADSS would benefit from: proximity to the pool, Bob Dailey Stadium and the museum.

Trustee Gurmail Aujla questioned the move’s rationale, saying it’s not like students are losing out; it’s just a different group of students who are benefitting.

“I’m not prepared to close Wood School.

It’s the hill I’m prepared to die on.

It’s a deal breaker or a deal maker,” Bennie said.

Aujla also asked if Bennie had costed out his scenario. Bennie

reiterated that there was still work to be done. Ransom later confirmed that staff will work on cost and logistic estimates which will be brought back to the next meeting.

Bennie’s scenario was the most palatable of all scenarios, trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said. “We have been dealt a very poor hand by the government that is supposed to support us,” she said. “(Bennie’s) option will get us on the road.

We’ll adjust spending for next year. And we can look at other options if we have to.”

Trustee Pam Craig spoke against Bennie’s option, saying the first option that saw Wood and Gill closed and Eighth Avenue repurposed made the most sense financially.

“We may have to look at deeper cuts during the budget

process in order to use every dollar we’re allocated.”

Trustee Gaelle Frey said she seconded Bennie’s motion because she believed the district could still realize enough savings through it. “But this is huge,” she said.

The vote shocked members of the audience, and some district staff members as well. “Will the students fit with this scenario?” asked student support services head Vera Kaiser. “We just voted for a scenario that we don’t know will work.”

One audience member called passing a motion without due diligence “shocking, inappropriate and frustrating.”

All the scenarios that the district brought to the public were terrible, audience member Chris Alemany said.

But Bennie’s scenario should have been brought to the public with more numbers earlier, he added.

Trustees have to bear the cross for not bringing more options to the table earlier, Ransom said.

“Other trustees never supported other scenarios.”

Bennie’s scenario was brought to the public. “It was part of the process in scenarios we did. It was on the web and in public meetings,” Frey said.

“It wasn’t something that was just brought up now.”

This board voted to pass the motion but the next may have to live with the fallout.

he subtle tension that has been simmering behind the scenes between Mayor John Douglas and Port Alberni city council is now a public visceral dislike.

City councillors voted down a seemingly innocuous request by Douglas to attend a meeting in Ottawa with federal officials prior to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting that same week.

The trip would have cost an extra $1,000

and would have resulted in raising the profile of the Alberni Valley, linking with other communities on the Island, Douglas said.

The request served as a lightning rod though for a storm of personal criticism that was aimed squarely at Douglas.

“How do I know what you are going to say there that isn’t 100 per cent accurate,” Coun. Jack McLeman said.

McLeman took issue with recent news reports in which he said Douglas openly questioned council’s decision to stall investing $500,000

into improvements at Canal Beach.

The criticism was “unprofessional”, Coun. Hira Chopra said. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but a ‘no’ vote didn’t mean we don’t trust you.”

Meetings in Ottawa are a waste of time, Chopra added. “How

many years have we gone? We go and what did we achieve?”

Some of council has a history with former mayor Ken McRae but they’ve still shown integrity for Douglas, they say. “I’m a friend of Ken McRae’s but I still showed you respect as mayor.

Not a simple day at beach Forget the issues; pass the muffins There seems to be a misconception that Canal Beach will be closed to the public this year since city council voted in favour of leaving $500,000 originally earmarked for beach improvements in the Land Sale Reserve fund.

Last week council voted against a budget item that would have seen $500,000 spent on resurfacing the old Alberni Plywood pier.

Mayor John Douglas, who was the only voice in favour of spending the money in 2014-15, called it a ‘grave error’ and intimated that work on the pier would likely never be completed if it wasn’t done this year.

Squabbling aside, the beach is something a large percentage of the community has embraced, including city councillors. Just look at how many hundreds of people showed up for the polar bear swim on Jan. 1 as evidence.

What is in store for the beach and adjacent park this year? Opinions seem to differ. The mayor feels that if the pier is not resurfaced, the beach will likely die or the property will be sold.

Some envision Canal Beach as akin to Ladysmith’s Transfer Beach, a lovely little green space along what used to be a complete industrial waterfront. Others see it as a jumping off point for all sorts of watersports.

Still others see it as a recreational gem sandwiched between marine industry.

The problem is, there is no plan for the beach. There is a lot of talk about what people would like to see, but there is no vision, no plan. And there needs to be cohesiveness for this place to flourish.

Lack of a pier this year won’t kill Canal Beach; political posturing very well could.

If the community really wants this beach, it’s time to step in. Don’t let the city argue it to obscurity.

They supported the opposition’s demand for an independent inquiry, although their own demands ranged from counselling for longsuffering wives to seeing someone punished for alleged negligence.

The scandal pushed in this tragic story is that some evidence was not protected by WorkSafeBC and wouldn’t have been admissible in court.

Prosecutors also said they had enough evidence for charges, but the companies or executives would be able to show “due diligence” that would likely result in acquittal.

What that means in English is that the explosion risk of extra-dry dust and air wasn’t fully grasped by either mill operators or WorkSafeBC. All B.C. mills are now subject to more scrutiny, and a coroner’s inquest will be calling witnesses this fall to see what lessons can be learned.

Back to pipelines through parks. This may seem like a scandal to urban B.C. residents who already fret about the possibility of the 60-year-old Trans Mountain pipeline, or one of several proposed gas pipelines, intruding on a park.

It’s not as well known that Trans Mountain completed a major twinning and upgrading project on the Alberta side in 2008. It crosses Mount

But back to muffingate, as it’s become known around here. I don’t know why people are so cynical and uninterested in serious issues. I wish I did.

I am strongly against removing our Marijuana Medical Access Program. I am concerned that the cannabis that will be offered to personaluse patients from Health Canada will lack quality, and will be harder for them to access this medicine.

I am strongly in favour of medical marijuana in Canada, as more and more medical studies are proving it to be effective treatment for many different things.

If the cannabis is harder to access, costs more, or lacks quality or strain selection, I believe this will enable many more criminal organizations. I think also patients may have to rely more on harmful treatments, like opiates and other pain medications.

Like most of Tom Fletcher’s stereotypical opinion columns, I strongly disagree. I hope to see lawyer John Conroy successful in his attempt to force the government to continue allowing patients to grow their medicine.

Our Bulldogs did us proud! They and we as a community can hold our heads high after showing grit and integrity in a hard fought series against a talented (in more ways than hockey) team.

I would rather lose with effort and honour than win with slashing, hacking and spearing or by using Oscar-quality antics and embellishments of every clean bump or hit. The whining and sniveling by the Grizzlies, especially their top line, should be embarrassing to the Victoria fans and maybe is why so few show up for their home games.

It is also too bad that what could have been a great Game 6 was determined and interrupted by marginal refereeing and lining and more play stoppages than any hockey fans should have to endure, especially our great fans.

Onward and upward, Go Dogs, go!

Make elections mandatory To the Editor,

To make elections fair, rather than expend time/energy/ money on what ultimately amounts to excluding potential voters, why don’t we do what Australia does and legislate mandatory voting?

After all, we need laws to legislate against something as common sense as not drinking and driving because sometimes we’re too stupid to know what’s good for us, so why not something equally as common sense as voting?

Something, in a country where we don’t have to risk our lives to do so, it should be common sense.

Help reduce the deficit by fining those who don’t show up to the polls $500 which would be referred to a collection agency if not paid up.

Maybe that would get more apathetic Canucks up off their duffs on election day, and we could focus less on a mission of excluding suspicious voters and focus more

on getting as many eligible voters to the polls as possible.

There is no way that an LNG project for here could compete economically with LNG plants in Kitimat and/or Prince Rupert.

So we’re likely to see pigs fly before we see an LNG plant in this area.

Why, oh why haven’t you written any editorials pointing out the absolute futility of pursuing an LNG plant here or anywhere on Vancouver Island?

We’ve had similar ideas for aluminum smelters and textile plants here which haven’t gone anywhere.

Up to now, the public has been misled about such proposals, and some actually believe/ believed that such proposals are/ were viable, leading to false hope and expectations—not good in a depressed economy.

The public good demands that such folly should be exposed editorially.

Teachers have it so good To the Editor,

The B.C. Teachers Federation says there are more than 41,000 school teachers in the federation. Strike vote results from March 6, show that only 29,301 teachers voted with 26,051 voting yes for strike action.

This leaves 14,949 teachers or 36.46 per cent of the BCTF that seem to be happy with the way things are.

The way things are is that the average teacher wage in B.C. is $89,000 per year ($70,624 in wages, $18,000 in benefits), two weeks off at Christmas, a two-week spring break, lieu days, a pension plan, having the months of July and August off, and a taxpayer funded benefits plan.

With the Alberta teachers federation’s recent four-year contract with only a two per cent pay raise in the fourth year with a cash bonus, and with the announcement that Staples will be closing 225 stores, these 14,949 seem to be saying “things are great the way they are; we are lucky to be working.”

Space Launch Canada has signed a three-year agreement with the University of Victoria to construct three space satellites.

Work on the design and construction has already started, and the first satellite should be completed in one year and launched within two

“This is a chance to begin diversifying the economy on the West Coast with a viable alternative,” said Fakir, who spearheads the project. “I always hear that West Coast communities are resource based or that they have resource economies. I believe that we are capable of going farther than that.”

The $840,000 project is being underwritten with a $420,000 grant from the Natural Sciences Engineering and Research Council of Canada, and the

other half with private investors.

The satellites will be built at the UVic Centre for Aerospace Research, a first for the facility, Fakir said.

Specifically, the team at UVic will construct three Space Launch Moon-5 satellites, each of which has a 10-year lifespan once in orbit. A third group — AGO Environmental Electronics — is also involved with the research.

The satellites will have the ability to take high-resolution pictures from space for educational purposes. “People will be able to take pics of something real time

instead of using old pictures of something that may be different now,” Fakir said.

“These won’t be military grade super high-resolution but they’ll be good for what they’re used for.”

As well, students from across the globe will be able to send basic messages to each other, and the satellites will be useful in a pinch if the Internet is down, he added.

In 2011, Fakir proposed building a launch site somewhere on the West Coast: Port Alberni, Ucluelet or Tofino. The idea is still percolating and hasn’t been forgotten, Fakir said.

His plan is to build a satellite then launch it from another country. Next, to bring another country’s launch infrastructure here to launch the

second satellite from a barge on the West Coast. And finally, to build a third satellite and launch it from a dedicated launch facility on the West Coast.

It’s too late to get in on the space software sector, which is established elsewhere and saturated now, Fakir said. “We missed that boat. But it’s a good time to get in on space technology at the launch level.”

A new sector would not only diversify the economy but would also spark arts and culture, he said.

“Inspiration makes arts and culture prosper and inspiration can come from making new things,” Fakir said.

The remaining councillors voted against, some begrudgingly. “I was close to saying yes but not after what you said,” Coun. Cindy Solda said.

Earlier, Coun.

Rob Cole said he couldn’t support the motion because of Douglas’ past and

present conduct.

Audience member Neil Anderson asked Cole to elaborate on the point and Cole declined, touching off a scolding from Anderson.

“I want explicit facts, not innuendo,” he said. “If you have a problem in this council then you better damn well get it sorted out.”

After the meeting, Douglas said the issue has its roots in the past.

“I’ve never had a vote of confidence from the three incumbents since

I’ve been elected mayor,” Douglas said, referring to McLeman, Chopra and Solda.

“They’ve used their influence to thwart decisions, like the one about the beach, over the past two years.”

The last election may have come and gone but there’s still a hangover from it, he said.

“The incumbents have been reluctant to accept me as mayor and constantly refer to former mayor Ken McRae,” he said.

“People have varying resistance to change and I find this

council to be highly resistant to it. It was that way when I was a councillor and that’s why I ran for mayor.”

Pining for the past is going to compromise the future, Douglas said.

“What they’re really reluctant to do is move the Valley into the future. And if we’re not careful we’re going to sit, it will pass us by and then we’re going to wonder what happened.”

When asked how the issue can be resolved Douglas replied, “an election.”

City staff have been ordered to examine management and non-union staff wages with an eye to cutting them.

Coun. Wendy Kerr made the notice of motion at council’s March 10 meeting.

The matter was referred back to city council for deliberation in an in-camera meeting.

Wages and labour issues are typically discussed in-camera.

“City staff wages was among the most common concerns outlined in the surveys we got back from the public,” Kerr said.

According to city manager Ken Watson there are 19 exempt employees on staff who make between $68,000 and $156,000

per year. Each of the 19 has an individual contract with the city.

“It’s at the top and that’s where the big money is at,” Kerr said. “I think when times were good then city staff got taken care of. But things aren’t the same, the economy’s not the same.”

Kerr wouldn’t speculate how much of a cut she was looking at. “But this conversation has to start somewhere and someone has to start it.”

City council recently voted to give itself a raise, but the optics of reducing some council wages must be taken in context.

Council’s raise was below the average of other municipalities, Kerr said.

“And CUPE just got a one per cent increase in January. Well, one per cent of a $40,000

wage is a lot different than one per cent of a $100,000 wage.”

Kerr works at West Coast General Hospital and is a member of a union.

But she says she doesn’t feel like a hypocrite asking that negotiated contracts be opened up and wages examined for reduction.

“I’m a member of a union that took a 15 per cent wage cut.

Myself and a lot of women in the union didn’t like it but we had to manage after and we did,” she said.

The issue is a tough one to tackle but it has to be broached, Kerr said.

“There’s been a lot of pussyfooting around but people have talked about this and someone had to make a move.”

Contracts would have to be re-negotiated.

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada.

Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1.

All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle.

And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room.

So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house.

Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired.

I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it.

I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days.

This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist.

“Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free.

Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.”

I got a text message from a woman across town.

I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled.

When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute.

To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically.

As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents.

Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings.

Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle.

But to still keep some of the driving fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque.

On the flip side, there’s nothing that I felt was fundamentally wrong with it.

The transmission changed gears, got the car moving and did exactly what it was supposed to do. It also just felt weird/awkward to me and unlike any other dual clutch transmission, I’ve operated.

There were, however, other highlights of the 500L. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect for those chilly mornings.

An upgraded item that was optioned on the L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and a Beats Premium Audio System ($500.)

If you’re a music lover, this is a great to add to a Fiat.

Perhaps what really stands about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside. I never felt cramped nor did my passengers.

The MSRP of the 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge is $25,995.

With the options and destination, the price as tested comes to $30,850.

The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for most families, the space is generous and the design is elegant. For buyers that are looking for a bit more performance from the RX,

the F-Sport package adds visual and emotional punch.

Looks Over the last several years, Lexus has taken a more aggressive design approach with its latest introductions. The front grille is more dynamic, designed to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the suspension is tweaked for more performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price.

The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850 Inside The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010.

The Community Arts Council is seeking artists who would like to put their names forward for the 2015 Days with the Arts Tour.

The committee is getting an early start with its call for interest. This two-day event only happens every other year and is a large fundraiser for the Community Arts Council.

Urgent need for books Book donations for the Community Arts Council’s annual book sale are down from prior years. The book sale is swiftly approaching — sale day is May 10 at Echo Centre.

Books, DVDs, CDs and gently used puzzles can be dropped off in the wooden bin under the stairs at the Rollin Art Centre during opening hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteers cannot accept National Geographic magazines, encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest condensed books or textbooks.

The liquor licence approval will now be sent back to the province for a final approval.

“I’ve been here for four years and I’m, wow,” owner Charlene Patterson said. “We have built it and they have come.”

Patterson has transformed the former Salvation Army Church building into an arts and entertainment venue that anchors the Rotary Arts District.

A city council report notes that it has a capacity of 145 people. The report recommended that alcohol be served until 11 p.m. weekdays, and that liquor be served until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

A letter from the building manager of a 41-unit apartment building across the street from Char’s was of most concern, Patterson said.

With respect to the noise concerns, Patterson said she moved heavy metal concerts to the Gyro Youth Centre. The summer block party has already been endorsed by council but Patterson is still considering scaling back the end time to midnight, she said.

Coun. Cindy Solda asked Patterson what would happen to the liquor license if she sold the establishment.

Patterson replied that she can either sell the license to another venue or sell the building. If she sold the building then the application process would start all over again for the new owner. Historical talk on 4-H club The Alberni District Historical Society will be hosting speakers from the 4-H Club

arts, entertainment, concerts and lectures.

Adding a liquor license would grow out the business by making Char’s Landing a place to go for an afternoon cocktail. While there are other drinking establishments nearby Char’s would service a different clientele.

“Addition of liquor service to this upscale entertainment/social venue would provide an attractive social gathering place in the uptown for local residents and visitors to enjoy,” the report noted.

This is Patterson’s second attempt to obtain a primary liquor license. The province turned down her first request in 2013 because Char’s Landing didn’t meet the requirements to be considered a restaurant.

The city received 56 written responses in response to Char’s application. Forty nine were in support of the application; seven were against it. Concerns of those opposed ranged from

he Shamble is a tuneup for the start of the Alberni Golf Course’s Men’s Club, which is scheduled for Sunday, March 30.

Head pro Bruce MacDonald calls it a Shamble— a cross between a scramble and regular golf.

The Shamble happens on Sunday, March 16 with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

Well, lookie here.

One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion.

That’s definitely not democracy in action.

The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board.

That’s gotta tell you something.

Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

Edna Clara

Kennedy

June 15, 1920 – March 4, 2014 We are saddened to announce the passing of Mom at the age of 93.

Edna passed away peacefully at the West Coast General Hospital with family by her side.

Mom was predeceased by husband Bill and son Larry; she leaves behind daughter Bev (Trevor) and daughter-in-law Rose (Clark); grandchildren Terri (Doug), Tina (Mario), Leanne, Lorie (Jeff ), Tyler (Tammy), Bryce (Tanya) and Travis; great grandchildren Denaye, Kristin, Amber, Shayla, Bryce, Kierra, Dara, Taiya, Talon, Jayden, Branden; great grandson Aiden.

Edna was born in Comox, BC and moved to Port Alberni in 1928.

She had many great accomplishments; co-owner of Kennedy Motors, as well as the Honda Shop, working at Clutesi Haven Marina, working as a matron for the RCMP and as a marriage commissioner. Mom loved to travel. She always had lots of jokes and stories to tell. Her favorite place was Beauty Island at Great Central Lake. Mom will be sadly missed by all whoever had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends. It was Edna’s wish that no formal service be held. Instead a private family gathering will be held at a later date.

We would like to say a special Thank You to Dr. Smit, the staff at the hospital, Rainbow Gardens and Echo Centre for their wonderful care. As well, a Thank You to Blake for all the ice cream sundaes.

Jeffries topped the 2014 BC Masters Curling Championship. The ladies and men’s teams will head

to Coaldale, Alta., March 31 to April 6 for the 2014 Canadian Masters Curling Championships.

The Kootenay team of Ralph Will won the BC Men’s Masters title.

This is the second BC masters title in a row for Jeffries, who played third for

the 2013 champions, Team Lepine.

The women’s championship was close at the top.

Team Jeffries, from the Alberni Valley Curling Club, finished with a 5-2 record.

They played Team McFadden in the final, winning 7-3 on a threeender in the sixth.

The B.C. Hockey League playoffs have “been a rollercoaster ride here for the last few days,” Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ head coach and general manager Kevin Willison said.

The Bulldogs were up 3-1 in their semifinal series when the Victoria Grizzlies drew within one game with a 9-2 victory on Monday, then forced a Game 7 with a 3-1 win on Tuesday in Port Alberni.
