Members of dialysis support group to go to Ombudsman

Members of the Rimbey and District Dialysis Support Group are stepping up their lobbying efforts to bring a satellite dialysis unit in Rimbey.

Irene Kurta-Lovell and June Norvila plan to take their group’s concerns to Alberta Ombudsman, Peter Hourihan and a group of investigators in Lacombe on March 12. They will meet with the group at the Lacombe Legion.

Kurta-Lovell is aware that the Red Deer Regional Hospital has run out of dialysis spaces and the situation has become critical, but she is concerned a private company will step in to create more dialysis units in Red Deer.

“That would, in no way, shape or form, relieve the stresses that rural patients have to deal with on an ongoing basis, he said.

She said even if Alberta Health Services decides to put more units in Red Deer, it will not help rural patients who live in outlying areas.

“We are certainly hoping after seven years of lobbying these people are considering Rimbey,” said Irene Kurta-Lovell.

travel to Red Deer regularly for dialysis treatment. She said having a dialysis unit in Rimbey would make their life much easier.

“Rimbey has space. Local patients and those who bus to Red Deer from (as far away as) Lacombe could be transported to a Rimbey dialysis satellite unit and free up many spaces in Red Deer,” she said. “Why is this not a feasible option?”

Norvila is frightened to learn that administration from Edmonton will select which patients will have to travel to other outlying centres such as Stettler or Rocky Mountain House due to lack of space.

“They don’t understand each patient’s situation and don’t seem to grasp the concept of rural versus urban travel. Would it not make more sense that the local specialist, in discussion with his patients, make that decision? Patients are tired now, let alone adding another three hours travel time to their day riding on a bus.”

This winter has been especially difficult for travelling to Red Deer due to lots of snow and ice and slippery, drifting roads.

“Winter is not over yet,” said Norvila. “Hav-

ing to travel in a four-wheel drive on the highway an hour each way and then also inside city limits and in parking lots is hard on the vehicle, uses more gas and is especially demanding on the driver.”

Last February the Renal Dialysis Rimbey Support Group presented a written submission pleading their cause to Justice John Z. Vertes at the Alberta Health Services Preferential Access Inquiry in Calgary.

In their submission, the Rimbey group gave reasons why dialysis patients should have the option of being treated closer to home in Rimbey.

Travelling to Red Deer for treatment is costly, time-consuming and

dangerous with collision rates for the road traveled by Rimbey and area dialysis patients 60 per cent higher than the provincial average, the report stated.

Patient costs including meals, gasoline, parking fees and vehicle maintenance totaled more than $10,500 yearly for residents in the Rimbey area compared to under $2,000 for urban patients.

The Rimbey Review made several calls to a communication representative from Alberta Health Services regarding the dialysis situation at Red Deer Hospital, but the spokesperson did not provide a comment by press time.

Don’t worry, be happy It was long ago and it was far away, but I remember it still.

It was a beach wedding and no one wore shoes!

It was wonderful! As well as not wearing shoes, lots of people went around saying stuff like, ‘don’t worry, be happy’ and so there we were.

Barefoot and happy!

The reason we were in Treena Mielke the Bahamas is our oldest daughter was getting marOn The Other Side ried. It was a small guest list and the bride’s dad and I were ecstatic we were on it.

It turned out I was also on the guest list as the official photographer! The one and only photographer, I might add.

No pressure there!

It seems people who take pictures for newspapers often find themselves performing dual roles such as mother-of-the bride and, official photographer.

I was extremely nervous. Being mother-of-the-bride at a beach wedding where the most important thing seemed to be matching your drink to your dress was not hugely stressful, but capturing the never to be forgotten moments with a humble Pentax 1000 was a different story.

“Help,” I said to all the other barefoot people wondering around, none of whom had a camera in hand. But, it seemed no one cared, but only wanted to not worry and be happy just like the bronzed skinned natives who sat around contentedly soaking up the sun and having siestas.

I wished I could have adopted that philosophy myself, but, I discovered I could not. I was not happy and I was worried.

What if it rained? What If my camera jammed? What if I ran out of film? Were these people who kept saying ‘don’t worry, be happy’ crazy? Didn’t they know it was important to worry?

As it turned out none of the above happened.

And, today as I turn the pages of the photo album with all the pictures I took that long ago day, I can still hear those guys saying, “don’t worry, be happy” and I have to smile.

There is much to be said for a beach wedding! Looking back, I think I said a lot of it with pictures.

They looked like perfect silhouettes that day, the bride and groom, two cake top figures, standing together on ground made holy by the significance of this most important occasion. And, stretching out in all its magnificence was the deep aquamarine waters of the Atlantic Ocean, providing a backdrop more beautiful than any man made cathedral could ever hope to achieve.

I turn the pages of the photograph album slowly.

I see a picture of the groom, pant legs of his tuxedo

rolled up, carrying his bride out into the ocean for no other reason than they are newly married, deliciously in love, and, of course, oblivious to the fact they were both getting soaked.

I waded backwards into the water to get that shot, I remember, and I swear if I would have to figure out how to move the sun to keep the shadows off their faces, I would have done it.

We moms do stuff like that sometimes. We have the power.

But, luckily, the sun obliged and I didn’t have to move it and I got the picture.

I close the book, still smiling.

It’s 17 years later. It’s cold. It’s winter. It’s supposed to snow.

But, for some reason I keep smiling. It’s probably because I keep hearing those words in my head, “don’t worry, be happy!”

Ridiculously simple, but somehow, quite effective.

Rimbey rural recreation offers fun and surprises My good friend John Helm and I set out to hunt ducks on the east shore of Gull Lake Alberta.

If my atheist friends will indulge me in this description, it was the kind of day God intended for such activities.

My son Dan decided he would take his quad up the east shore about 4 miles and meet us on a bay that had been “target rich” in times past.

We loaded the old 20-foot plywood Jon Boat with all our gear including a model 37 Ithaca 12-gauge that John had borrowed from another friend. Paddles, decoys, extra gas can - if you are an outdoorsman you know the list is extensive and for the sake of brevity I will leave it there. Almost as an afterthought we threw in a 5-gallon bailing bucket that we knew we would never need but it did satisfy the boating statute.

“Jump in Spike!” I said to my Chesapeake Bay retriever. He effortlessly cleared the gunnels on the boat, which was on the trailer and took his seat in the bow.

We scrambled into the jeep and took off for the lake in good spirits chiding each other over past blunders and challenging each other as to who would limit out first on the hapless Mallard population.

Using the 5-gallon “afterthought” we bailed at least 1 ton of water out of the hull, which gave us about a foot of freeboard. I grabbed the portside gunwale and pulled down while John hoisted his 300-pound plus body over the starboard gunwale and continued the bailing exercise until there was only about an inch of water remaining. I pulled myself into the boat and then pulled spike in. After double checking our gear, we fired up the motor and headed for shore to see Dan who said it looked like a white wall had instantly materialized out in the lake and he wondered what had happened.

We related the story to Dan then continued on with our hunt.

I can’t remember how many ducks we shot that day but I do remember the excitement of the boating mishap and in very vivid detail.

It’s a funny thing to have been involved in an event that you normally would have avoided but produced a memory you would not give up.

Life encourages us daily to adopt this peculiar credo; “expect to be surprised and you will not be disappointed”.

Business break-in in Rimbey being investigated by RCMP The Rimbey RCMP detachment responded to a number of calls for service this week. Highlights of the week include frauds, missing persons, motor vehicle collisions, a break and enter to a business and other serious matters.

Break-in investigated Sometime between Friday, February 28 and Sunday, March 2 unknown culprit(s) broke into a business located on the east side of Rimbey.

The criminal(s) forced open a door and entered the business where the subsequently damaged property and stole a small amount of cash. Mounties are investigating the crime with the assistance of the RCMP forensic experts who also attended the scene. Police are currently following up on clues and any leads at this time as the investigation continues.

Missing persons found Police investigated two missing person complaints. In each case, the person being sought by police was located safe and sound.

Offenders breach court orders Police continue to monitor offenders of the law who have been let out of jail by a Judge to reside in the community with specific conditions to abide by instead of serving out a sentence behind bars. Just as the Mountie was about to live up to his dream of becoming a real farmer, the snow gave way and the officer fell up to his shoulders in the snow. Thankfully, he held onto the two wires tight enough to use them to pull himself up out of the abyss. When the officer struggled back to his feet he realized he had drawn quite an audience. There is a real good chance that one or more of the horses is named after a swear word because they came running as hard as they could go when they heard all the commotion.

Chamber of Commerce gear up for annual trade fair

By Treena Mielke Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce’s annual trade fair is coming up and businesses are already booking their spots.

Carrie Vaartstra, executive assistant for the chamber said about 130 invitations have been sent out and responses are coming in for the trade fair to be held May 9 and 10.

“We have the arena booked, we just need to fill it,” she said.

The trade fair is a great opportunity for local and out-of-town businesses and not-for-profit groups to make themselves

more visible and promote themselves.

“It gives the public a chance to see what businesses the town has and also what volunteer groups are active and busy,” said Vaartstra.

Last year 55 businesses booked booths at the trade fair and the number of visitors increased from the previous year.

Chamber president Jackie Stratton said the trade show is vital to Rimbey.

“As a chamber we feel the expo (trade show) is an opportunity for growth our community.”

The Hot Air Affair held in conjunction with the trade fair the last two years will not be held this year, but will probably continue in 2015.

Stratton said the hot air affair has proved to be a popular event and attracted great turnouts, however, due to expenses incurred to bring the event to town, having the function every other year is the best option.

Concert fundraiser held for Rimbey Agrim Centre

By Amelia Naismith Wrapped up in a night of great food and music, the Agrim Centre’s Duane Steele concert and dinner fundraiser was a festive celebration for the progress of the building’s construction and the accomplishments of the board of directors.

“It made a statement how we are on track, how we’ll continue to be on track and how we’ll be successful in the future,” said Rimbey Agricultural Society president Tim Edge. The event brought in just over $3,000.

The centre’s construction is entering its third phase, the completion

of the interior. The money raised at the fundraiser will help finish the boardrooms, kitchen and other amenities.

Approximately 200 people came out to the concert event to rejoice in the Agrim growth.

The fundraiser featured a dinner, Duane Steele concert as well as door prizes, 50/50 draws, a Plinko game and a silent auction run by Steve Durchame of Dukes Autographs, based out of Edmonton.

The project remains on budget but the extensively cold and snowy winter has presented issues. “They weather’s been tough of course for everybody. Overall it’s been progressing quite well,” said Mackinaw.

Over the course of the project the Agrim has been blessed with the generosity of many donor’s and sponsors. At the Fundraiser Edge men-

tioned a few: the Rimbey Exhibition Association, $30,000; Suncor Energy Services, $25,000; EckRim Agencies, $25,000 and the Kevin Hopper Memorial Foundation, $5, 818.

Edge is projecting the building’s opening within the fourth quarter of 2014 and the centre will boast the largest door on a building in the province of Alberta. The door will be able to fit a combine header through without unhooking.

Glaucoma -- The silent thief of sight Rimbey optometrist is raising awareness about one of the leading causes of vision loss in Alberta – Glaucoma.

A new provincial survey reports that nearly half of Albertans (44 percent) who don’t have a regular optometrist believe they don’t need one, or that they don’t have eye problems. The fact is, many eye diseases don’t have symptoms, and without a comprehensive eye examination performed by a doctor of optometry, it’s impossible to determine if you have, or are at risk of developing an eye disease.

March 9-15 is World Glaucoma Awareness Week, and local optometrist, Dr. Kevin Hesterman wants to remind Rimbey residents to consult with their optometrist about glaucoma prevention and detection.

“A comprehensive eye examination is often the only way to detect glaucoma,” says Dr. Hesterman. “During your exam, your optometrist will look into your eye to assess the health of the optic nerve, measure your field of vision and perform a

simple and painless procedure called tonometry, which measures the internal pressure of your eye.”

Glaucoma impacts children and adults, but is most frequently seen in people over the age of 40.

Those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a history of eye injuries are at even greater risk of developing the disease.

“Glaucoma often develops gradually and painlessly without noticeable symptoms,” says Dr. Hesterman.

While the exact cause is not completely understood, glaucoma is commonly caused by the overproduction of fluid and/or a decrease in fluid being drained from the eye, which damages the optic nerve. As the fibers that make up the optic nerve are damaged due to increased pressure on the nerve, the amount and quality of information sent to the brain decreases and a loss of vision occurs.

Once the pins were knocked down and the cheers had settled it became clear that this year’s Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Bowl for Kids event had surpassed its fundraising goal.

Kidz Corner Continued from page 11 When things are calm, encourage your child to describe his worries or fears. Listen carefully and try not to interrupt or finish his sentences. Take his worries or fears seriously, even if they seem silly.

2. Get them involved in activities they enjoy such as playing with favourite toys, reading a book, cuddling with a stuffed animal or stomping on a rug.

3. Model relaxation and stress-reducing techniques such as deep breathing. Ask them to pretend they are blowing up a balloon inside their tummy (breathing in slowly through their nose) and then blow the air out through their mouth.

4. Make sure preschoolers have plenty of unstructured play time. Play really helps young children let go of some of their stress. For children 3 and under, water play can be particularly soothing.

5. Sleep! Children require 10 to 12 hours of sleep every night to feel their best. Establish a regular bedtime routine with quiet, calming activities such as music, reading or quiet play for half an hour before bedtime.

6. Limit TV, computer and video game time. Encourage your child to be active and be active with them – go for walks, go to the park, or put on some music for a family dance party. Vigorous physical activity is another great stress reliever!

“Rimbey has been fabulous for donations,” she said, “but it has been a hard winter for a lot of people and the need has doubled.”

About 37 people judged heifers, hay and horses.

We also guessed various items ranging from items you would find in the vet clinic to older objects like berry pickers.

Judging winners for the juniors were Tim Trenson, Nicole Groenveveld and Katie Hudson.

Call for Expression of Interest to be a Candidate for Participation in Regional Plan Review Panels The Government of Alberta is continuing its work on developing seven regional plans under the direction of the Land-use Framework for Alberta.

Each plan provides the context and guidance for land and natural resource use in each region to help achieve Alberta’s long-term social and economic goals based on a foundation of good environmental management.

Regional plans are developed in consultation with Albertans and become legal instruments once approved by Cabinet. As such, the Alberta Land Stewardship Act (ALSA) includes provisions for requesting a review of a regional plan or regional plan amendment. To support this review process, 14032DA1 the Government of Alberta is creating a standing roster of candidates from which it will select members to participate in review panels for regional plans once the plans have been implemented. The role of the panel will be to consider review requests and provide recommendations to the Government of Alberta.

Candidates from the roster will be invited to participate in panels based on the subject matter of the review and the candidate’s area of expertise.

Once the roster is established, candidate names will sit on the roster for between two to three years. The roster will consist of a broad range of stakeholders and as such, individuals with a background or interest in property rights, First Nations, business, environment and rural or urban interests are encouraged to apply.

It’s proving to be a banner year for Rimbey Bantam Renegades.

The Renegades won their first game of league playdowns against Camrose in a best of three series last Thursday in Rimbey 4-3 in overtime.

Connor Shantz, assisted by Chase Makofka, scored the gamewinning goal.

The team travelled to Camrose, Saturday and will play in Rimbey Sunday if a third game is needed.

On March 1, the Renegades downed Ponoka Warriors 5-2 in Ponoka, a win which earned them the coveted Zone 4 banner. The first game of the total point series for the banner ended in a 3-3 tie in Rimbey Feb. 25.

Head coach Brent Norstrom said he was impressed with his team.

“They played really well. I knew

they could do it. They just needed encouragement and to believe in themselves. The whole team was an all-star team,” he said.

Rimbey is hosting the Bantam C Provincials March 13 to 16.

Five of the team’s players competed in Provincials last year, so the team’s working with several veterans.

A total of eight teams will participate in the tournament.

Opening ceremonies will be held Friday beginning at 6 p.m. with Mayor Rick Pankiw as master of ceremonies. During the ceremonies, each team will march into the arena and a lightshow will be part of the exciting scenario. Medals will be handed out after the final game, Sunday.

WRIGHT Reini Lewis Wright of Bluffton, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the age of 63 years.

Reini was born on September 30, 1950 in Grande Prairie, Alberta. At only nine months old, Reini weighed in at a healthy 28 pounds, and he retained his bear-like figure his whole life, which earned him the nickname, “Bear”. He moved with his family to the Bluffton area in 1962, and called it home the remainder of his life. Reini was united in marriage to Donna in 1984, and became a father to three children:Trent, Jen and Scott. Over the next 30 years, he spent his time farming and driving truck from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, and everywhere in between. In Reini’s later years, his priorities shifted to include spending time with his grandchildren.

Reini’s friends and family could always count on his regular phone calls and visits over coffee to catch up and hear about his latest adventure. He will be greatly missed. Reini will be lovingly remembered by his son, Scott (Charmen) Wright and their daughter, Trenna all of Sturgeon County, Alberta; and his daughter, Jen (Rick) Dore and their son, Evan all of Red Deer; as well as Trent’s children and their mother, Ty, Kailyn and Terri Mullen all of Sherwood Park. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brother, Terry Wright of Ponoka; and his sister, Twyla Hauck of Rimbey; in addition to numerous other relatives and many cherished friends. Reini was predeceased by his parents, Retta and Ralph Wright; his beloved wife, Donna in 2008; and his son, Trent in 2010. A Public Funeral Service in Honour of Reini’s Life was held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre, Rimbey on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Mark Schultz officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Home Cemetery, Ponoka at 3:30 p.m. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Reini’s Memory may be made directly to the Lung Association - Alberta and NWT, PO Box 4500 Station South, Edmonton, Alberta T6E 6K2; or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue N.W., Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1Z2. Canada moves to eliminate sow stalls and painful farming practices for pigs!

March 6, 2014 (Ottawa, Ontario) Today pigs in Canada are one step closer to freedom from sow stalls and painful farming practices.

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) secured the move after years of negotiations among industry stakeholders. The new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs creates over 100 animal care requirements and directly addresses the inhumane practices of sow stalls and castration and tail docking without pain relief.

“This new code is a watershed moment in Canada” says Barbara Cartwright, CEO of the CFHS. “Negotiating significant advancements in animal welfare was an arduous process because the CFHS advocates for only those farming practices that provide good welfare for the animals. The elimination of sow stalls is chief amongst these.”

The new Code requires all new barns to provide group housing to sows as of July 1st, 2014 with a further ban on conventional stall systems that continuously restrict sow movement by 2024.

“While pleased with the direction, the CFHS is disappointed that the pig industry wasn’t willing to outright end the use of inhumane sow stalls” says Ms. Cartwright. “Fortunately retailers and consumers are more aware than ever about animal welfare and are pushing the market hard to completely eliminate gestation stalls. Retailers such as Tim Hortons, Loblaw, McDonalds and Costco are removing sow stalls from their supply chain.”

The new Code also swiftly ends the current practice of castrating piglets or removing their tails without any pain relief. By 2016 piglets of any age must receive pain relief. Furthermore, farmers must immediately provide enrichment to enhance the pig’s physical and social environments which are often barren.

“This is the first significant update to Canadian pig welfare standards in more than two decades,” says Geoff Urton, CFHS representative at the National Farm Animal Care Council and Manager of Stakeholder Relations at the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA). “The Codes of Practice are used in provincial law enforcement when investigators are responding to complaints of cruelty and will now be mandatory in the Canadian Pork Council’s Animal Care Assessment program.”

Under the new Code for pigs, require all farmers in Canada must: Not build new barns that do not provide group housing (effective July 1st, 2014); Phase out stall systems that continuously restrict sow freedom of movement (effective July 1st, 2024); Use pain relief when castrating piglets over 10 days of age (effective immediately); Use pain relief when castrating or tail-dock-

ing piglets at any age (effective July 1st, 2016); Provide all pigs with multiple forms of enrichment to enhance their physical and social environments (effective immediately);

Stop tethering of pigs (effective immediately).

More than 50 retailers in North America have made the commitments to eliminate sow stalls from their supply chains.
