FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING
Strike vote was strategically done to encourage bargaining: Davidoff
BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff
BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff
School District 20 teachers await further direction after a strike vote passed late last week. But the president of the local union said right now it's just a wait and see. “We want government to come to the table and bargain in good faith; We don't want to walk off the job, that's not our intent,” confirmed Andy Davidoff, president of the Kootenay Columbia Teachers Union. “The strike vote was taken to show government our solidarity and requesting them to come to the table with a reasonable set of proposals that we can actually consider and that's what bargaining should be.” More than 29,000 teachers voted, with 26,000 (89 per cent) saying “yes” to the strike option that can be activated on 72 hours' notice for 90 days. If job action is needed it will occur in stages but any initial action won't include school closures, an end to teachers participating in extracurricular activities or an impact on report cards or communication with parents. “We’re very concerned that it appears that this government wants to govern by dictate, by faith and basically that they receive a mandate and it looks like they believe that gives them cart blanche authority to do whatever they want to do, even if it's illegal and that really is causing a lot of concern for I think more than just our members,” said Davidoff. He's referring to the last dispute, which the former chair of the province's bargaining team recently stepped out to claim that the government negotiators had no intention of reaching a deal. In a letter to her local newspaper (The Creston Valley Advance), Kootenay Lake School District 8 trustee Melanie Joy said she became cognizant after reading the ruling by Justice Susan Griffin on Jan. 27, which cut through the Liberals’ education legislation on class size and composition over the past decade. “She basically made it very clear that what our current Minister of Education was saying was absolutely inaccurate and confirmed what Madame Justice Griffin said in the B.C. Supreme Court decision that the government pretty much lamented the missed opportunity to legislate concessions and there was absolutely no good faith bargaining happening. “Our members are very concerned about that and that was reflected in the strike vote.”

A week ago people along Bay Ave. in downtown Trail were busy shoveling up the remains of a heavy snowfall. On Monday, in one of the first signs of spring, Ben Gresley-Jones from the City of Trail was tackling the annual assignment of filling in pot holes along the roadway. Spring should continue to nestle its way into the West Kootenay with double-digit high temperatures in the forecast for the week ahead.

Where is the Trail and District Visitor Centre? That's the question tourists ask when they drive through town, some stopping to look further and others just pushing through to the next community, according to Norm Casler, executive director of the Trail & District Chamber of Commerce. The chamber, which operates the centre and the Teck Interpretive Centre under one roof, is voicing its need for a new location that is accessible and visible. “As the operator of the Trail Visitor Centre, it's quite clear to us that our location is not ideal for tourism traffic,” he said. “The number one comment we hear is that it's really hard to find and it's really hard to access, especially for people who are pulling a trailer or they've got a 40-foot RV, there is nowhere to park.” Economic development counts on attracting tourists, according to Casler. That said, Trail had about 4,000 people stop into its visitor centre last year, which is far less than the approximate 12,000 Castlegar saw or 17,000 Nelson tallied. Casler attributes part of this “shocking” statistic to Trail's location. See NEW, Page 3

The staff of Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) delivered another evening of potty humour, naughty humour, song and dance, and the occasional smirking jab at stereotypes for their Enema Awards variety show at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail Saturday night. The eclectic cast entertained the sold-out, 700-plus crowd with a series of playfully performed skits and routines covering many of the typically unmentionable aspects of working in the health care industry, often made all the more enjoyable because of the normally reserved
medical staff hamming it up for the audience. Highlights of the show included Dr. Stephanie Cameron garbed in dominatrix latex and boots leading a group with strategically placed musical bedpans, an ensemble of surgeons, GP’s, nurses and therapists, allowing their super hero fantasies to come to life, a short skit with nurse, Kim Brown, playing a frighteningly believable, valleygirl obstetrician, and Mayor of Rossland, Greg Granstrom, getting a very public lesson in the proper steps from the Boomtown Garter Girls. The two-hour show kept the audience in stitches and once again brought out the best in the, normally staid, local medical community’s black humour.

New museum/library could include centre: chamber FROM PAGE 1 “If they can’t (tourists) find a place to pull over with their RV and get the information and realize that there is a lot to offer, they might never come back,” he said. The chamber has been dreaming of a new location for some time, one that has parking and a sani dump nearby (like the one in the Gulch) or one that is visible from Victoria Street for passersby (like the empty adjacent lots that formally housed gas stations). But the reality always comes down to the lack of a suitable place and, of course, the cost. “The truth of the matter is we do want to get city council’s attention that this is important,” he added. “There is a lot of talk right now about a new location for the library and museum and sometimes we think well why not make it a museum/ library/visitor centre and Teck Interpretive
Centre.” The committee of representatives from the city, Trail Historical Society and the Trail and District Public Library has been formed to develop a plan to present a concept for the proposed facility to the public and to determine a strategy to raise funds to offset the capital costs, according to Sarah Benson, director of Trail Museum and Archives. This committee meets Friday to begin the process, which should be followed by notice of upcoming public consultations. Trail council is currently looking at an estimated construction and operating budget for the proposed integrated facility. The nearly 18,000- square foot, two-floor structure is estimated to cost about $6.3 million, according to a report released prior to the city’s regular council meeting Monday night.

Robson gas station robbed The Castlegar News Johnny’s Groceries and Gas was held up early Friday (March 7) evening. The proprietor had earlier indicated that an amount of cash was taken and no one was hurt. RCMP Sergeant Laurel Mathew of the Castlegar detachment described that at about 6:45 p.m. a complaint was received of an armed robbery at Johnny’s grocery, located on Broadwater
Road in Robson. “The suspect male entered the store and brandished a firearm, ordering the employee to open the till, “ the release states. “The employee complied, and the suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. Neither of the two employees who were present were injured. The suspect fled on foot and has not yet been apprehended. “The male
is described as: Caucasian, approximately 5’6”, slender build. He was dressed in black and was wearing a black mask and had a hood pulled down over his head/face. There is no known vehicle associated at this time. “Castlegar RCMP, the Kootenay Boundary Regional General Investigation Section, and Forensic Identification services are continuing to investigate this matter.

Cabaret finale on Thursday
TRAIL –Two well-known West Kootenay musicians will perform in Trail Thursday night as an unusual keyboard-and-drums duo. The multi-instrumental sound of Selkirk College music instructor Gilles Parenteau will be backed by Trail drummer Tony Ferraro in the final Winter Cabaret production of the Trail District Arts Council. “It is kind of an exciting show,” Ferraro said. “Gilles is known for this one-man symphony that he does with all his keyboards. He has adapted it to add drums and make it a bit more intimate and popular . . . with a program of music that spans the ages.” Using multiple keyboards, Parenteau’s earlier show “was based on the fact that the pipe organ was the original orchestra, but was made a lot more compact using modern equipment. “For this show, he will use a single keyboard and a pedal board. He will play a lot of familiar pieces of music, adapted to different styles. You might hear a flamenco guitar and then go into how a jazz trumpeter might play it. “It is a really good show for all ages because it goes through a lot of different styles.” Adding to the appeal is that Parenteau takes the time to explain what will be going on in many of his arrangements. “Gilles is kind of a mad scientist,” Ferraro said. “He has a very creative mind. A lot of people wouldn’t take this

It takes a lot of discipline and effort. But we enjoy our instruments and don’t mind taking the time.” Ferraro particularly enjoys drumming with Parenteau because it “challenges me to rise up to the high level that he performs at. It is very different from playing a threeand-a-half minute pop song.” In addition to his teaching duties, Parenteau has performed as a professional musician for more than two decades, including appearances at the Montreal and Vancouver jazz festivals and cruise ship duty with the Holland America Line, and composing dozens of scores for CBC television and radio. Ferraro toured with the Canadian pop band Trooper in early 1990s and now plays
with several different West Kootenay groups. In April, he will fill in on drums for Canadian New Wave band The Spoons at the end of their cross-country tour for dates Nanaimo and Victoria that their regular drummer can’t make. “It is pretty exciting for me because it is not often you get to play with a band that has sold a few millions records.” Thursday’s concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at Muriel Griffiths Room in the Greater Trail Community Centre, and is sponsored by Teck Metals Ltd. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and are available at the Charles Bailey Theatre box office (368-9669). Reserved table seating is available for groups of four or more.

Men saved after boat capsized By Greg Nesteroff Nelson Star
Two elderly men were pulled safely from Kootenay Lake shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday after their boat capsized. Nelson residents Cory Scanlon and stepson Braeden McRae, 15, were fishing underneath the orange bridge when they saw “some commotion” on the north side of the lake, below Amanda’s Restaurant. “We didn’t really know what was going on,” Scanlon said. “We raced over and pulled them out. It was crazy.” They didn’t initially hear any cries of distress, but later made out very faint calls for help. “We were fishing away and concentrating on what we were doing. But things didn’t look right.

I said ‘What’s going on over there?’ My son said ‘I think that boat’s upside down.’” McRae said they untied their fishing boat and sped across to discover one man sitting on top of the small overturned vessel and another hanging onto the back handles. They’d been in the water about five minutes. “It was kind of hard getting them in with all their wet clothes,” McRae said. “We got the heater going and tied our boat to theirs so we could drag it back. Then we heard voices above us — the police yelling to ask if they needed an ambulance.” Neither, however, required medical treatment. The men, one 82 and the other in his mid-70s, were from Six Mile. It appears they were trying to untie their boat from the bridge when it flipped.

Provincial
Banned gambler loses casino lawsuit By Jeff Nagel
Surrey North Delta Leader
A North Delta woman who tried to sue two Lower Mainland casinos and the B.C. Lottery Corp. for failing to keep her from compulsively gambling has lost her case in B.C. Supreme Court. Joyce Ross alleged she lost $78,000 at Surrey’s Fraser Downs and Langley’s Cascades casinos between 2007 and 2010 despite having signed herself into the BCLC’s voluntary selfexclusion program, which is designed to bar entry to admitted problem gamblers. B.C. Supreme Court Justice John Truscott found the two casinos were not negligent and their policies, surveillance and security systems were appropriate and reasonable. “In many respects, the plaintiff is the author of her own misfortune because she was attempting after selfexclusion not to be identified by the casinos, which is just
the opposite attitude that she should have had,” Truscott stated in his decision. The self-exclusion system at that time relied largely on casino staff recognizing banned patrons from hundreds of circulated photos they were to periodically review. Identity checks of all incoming patrons was impractical, the court heard, and licence plate recognition scanners now used to detect banned gamblers’ cars in parking lots weren’t in use at that time. The court found the program met and perhaps exceeded the industry standard of the time. While voluntary self-exclusion helps identify and remove many patrons, the court said, those who enrol must still try to control or stop their gambling. “It was her primary responsibility to remain out of the casinos,” Truscott ruled. “To award her these monies simply because she was in the self-
exclusion program when every other gambler not in the program is not entitled to this recovery, would be to encourage every other gambler to join the self-exclusion program in order to have this claim.” Ross signed up at Fraser Downs in June of 2007 and then steered clear of the Cloverdale racetrack and casino for long periods of time, after which casino staff were less likely to spot her. Ross also admitted she was less likely to be recognized from her 2007 photo after growing her hair longer and gaining weight. The decision also upholds BCLC’s right to withhold winnings of gamblers when they’re self excluded – a rule that took effect in April 2009. That did not deprive Ross of any winnings, court heard, because she never won more than $10,000 at a time, the threshold at which identification is required to claim prize money.
Chilliwack
Measles outbreak prompts health warning The Chilliwack Progress A measles outbreak in a Chilliwack school has Fraser Health’s chief medical officer urging residents who may have been exposed to the virus not to travel during spring break. Dr. Paul Van Buynder said two cases have been confirmed so far and Fraser Health is following up on dozens of linked suspected cases. Fraser Health said the cases occurred “in a community with traditionally low immunization rates.” The Chilliwack public school district has confirmed to The Progress that the measles out-
break is not related to any of its schools. Relatively low immunization rates in some parts of Fraser East have led to several clusters of the highly contagious virus in previous years; the most recent being in the fall of 2013. Public Health staff is contacting the affected families directly to offer immunoglobulin or vaccine in order to reduce the chance of the infection developing. Of particular concern is students and families preparing for Spring Break. Fraser Health is advising individuals who may have been exposed to the
virus to refrain from traveling until they have been cleared by Public Health. “We are urging individuals who may have been exposed to the virus to contact their local Public Health Unit to be cleared before traveling during Spring Break,” said Dr. Van Buynder. The potential for this virus to spread as a result is very concerning. The most effective protection against the virus is two doses of the vaccine which is free to all those born in or after 1957. Residents are encouraged to contact their regular health provider to receive the vaccination.

Snowmobiler dies in avalanche
THE CANADIAN PRESS VERNON, B.C. - RCMP say a 34-year-old North Okanagan man has died in hospital after being caught in an avalanche while snowmobiling near Vernon. Mounties and search and rescue crews were dispatched to the avalanche site near the Keefer Lake resort late Saturday afternoon. Police say the man had been snowmobiling with five friends in the area when he was caught in the slide.
Officers say he was buried in several meters of snow and was dug out by friends and other rescuers. Gordon Molendyk, of the Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP detachment, says emergency crews at the resort helped pull the man out. He says the man, whose name hasn’t been released, was treated by paramedics then airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital. The BC Coroners Service is now investigating.

Man blames smart meters for $1,000 bill from BC Hydro Resident was away on holidays during billing period By Peter Rusland
Cowichan News Leader Pictorial
No wonder Justin Point doesn’t trust billing from his new smart meter. He got home from Brazil to find a $1,050 bill from BC Hydro — despite being away for that threemonth billing period “They said they’d suspend my account until they investigate,” he fumed. “I had no problems with my bills before that smart meter was put on. “How will they rectify this? I want my old analog meter back; I’ll make a request for that. “I just don’t trust this new smart meter,” Point said of the bill that’s about 20 times his usual invoice. “My bills are usually around $50, as I burn wood to heat my house in the winter, and I am very energy-conscious. “The rep at their office was steadfast in his explanation about their meters not making mistakes; he simply refused to believe what I was telling him — that is, until I explained to him that I was on vacation in Brazil. “I was away for the entire period listed in their invoice.” Hydro’s Ted Olynyk said he couldn’t comment on individual accounts, but “it could have been a clerical error.” Point said the Hydro agent called the gaffe “a faulty reading.” Olynyk said Hydro staff can
“walk customers through steps about their billing, and determine what the cause is.” But Point wasn’t pleased with those steps. “They still refuse to admit any wrongdoing. “I asked them if they would have returned my money if I had paid the bill, and they said they would have made the correction in the next meter reading.” That left him dubious about smart meters Hydro brass insists are accurate. “We’ve had about 387 new smart meters tested because people disputed their accuracy,” said Olynyk, “and all came back without a problem.” Meters across the country — for instance, gas and electric units — are governed by Measurements Canada, he noted. Point’s billing problem could be grounded in “a myriad of reasons; it could be a faulty heat pump,” suggested Olynyk. That’s cold comfort to Point. “This begs the question: how would they have known about the erroneous meter reading? The answer is simply they could not, nor would not have known.” Furthermore, “it makes me wonder what future meter readings will be.” “If they’re even a little off, it’s very concerning,” said Point. “How many other people are not paying attention and just paying their bills?”

More winter water woes in Winnipeg THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - Hundreds of Winnipeg homes are without water because of pipes left frozen by the extreme cold and the city is warning it could be weeks before the taps are flowing again. City crews thawed Pat Dorman’s pipes last week, but two days later they were frozen again. Her home is now at the bottom of a list of almost 900 waiting for the city to restore running water. “When we first went on there, there were less than 100 people on the list,” said the 70-year-old. “I’m kind of digging in for the long haul.” Living in her home has become a “camping experience” as she and her husband try to make every drop of water count. “You can’t take a shower. You sort of have to just bathe,” she said. “We’ve become conservationists in the fact that no water is being wasted.” In addition to the almost 900 homes without water, the city has said another 5,000 homes are at risk of having their pipes freeze up. The extreme cold this winter has forced frost to penetrate deeper into the ground than before. Even as temperatures start to rise, officials said those homes that are at risk will remain “vulnerable over the next few months.”
Quebec
Questions raised as media mogul runs for PQ THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - The day after media tycoon Pierre Karl Peladeau’s plunge into provincial politics, he’s earning considerable praise in the pages of Quebec’s most-read newspaper - one he happens to own. Columns in the flagship paper of Peladeau’s empire described the Parti Quebecois candidate as a magnificent catch, a game-changer for Premier Pauline Marois and bad news for supporters of Canadian unity. Several opinion writers in Monday’s Le Journal de Montreal also said Peladeau delivers instant credibility to the pro-independence PQ as it tries to beef up its economic chops. Peladeau stunned the province Sunday by announcing he would run alongside Marois to help the PQ win a majority mandate in the April 7 election. The media baron’s new career is raising concerns about his media company’s influence on political coverage in Quebec - even though Peladeau has resigned as vice-chairman of Quebecor Media Inc. He’s insisted his media outlets would maintain independent coverage. Peladeau says he will retain his ownership stake in the company and place his investments in a blind trust. Monday’s Le Journal de Montreal featured a front-page photo of Peladeau and a half-dozen columns that discussed Peladeau’s high-profile candidacy.

Job creation in Canada confined to Alberta THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - When it comes to job creation in Canada, there’s Alberta and then there’s everybody else. The latest employment data for February showed that the oilrich western province created an impressive 18,800 jobs, largely in construction, mining and oil and gas, while in the rest of the country overall employment fell. Economists warn against staking too much on any onemonth data point, but the February result is no outlier. As the Statistics Canada report issued Friday showed, Alberta is responsible for almost all the new net jobs generated in the past year - 82,300 of the 94,700 countrywide, or 87 per cent - as the province saw employment rise an impressive 3.8 per cent. By comparison, provinces not called Alberta only gained about 12,000 which, for the purposes of the agency’s survey, constitutes a rounding error. “I know this is not a new story but it’s becoming extreme,” said Doug Porter, the Bank of Montreal’s chief economist. “In the last 12 months, Alberta is the only province that’s seen meaningful growth. They’ve had job gains of nearly four per cent
OTTAWA - A quick look at February unemployment (previous month in brackets): Unemployment rate: 7.0 per cent (7.0) Employment rate: 61.6 per cent (61.6) Labour force participation rate: 66.2 per cent (66.3) Number unemployed: 1,343,100 (1,333,200) Number working: 17,790,300 (17,797,300) Youth (15-24 years) unemployment: per cent 13.6 (13.9) Men (25 plus) unemployment: per cent 6.3 (6.1) Women (25 plus) unemployment: per cent 5.4 (5.4) and meanwhile six provinces have seen declines and one’s been flat.” The other provinces in the positive territory, although far below Alberta’s bounty, are Ontario with an overall pickup of 28,700, which given the large population base is only an increase of 0.4 per cent, and Saskatchewan, where employment rose a healthier 0.9 per cent by adding 5,200 net new jobs. One way of looking at, says CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld, is that the labour market in Canada is working as it should. Canadians are moving to where the jobs are. And the numbers do show that aside from creating jobs, the western province is steadily increasing its workforce, by 81,300 in the past 12 months alone. But Shenfeld concedes it’s a serious problem for provincial governments that
are on the losing end of worker migration, sapping their ability to raise revenue and pay for services. While most provinces remain in deficit, Alberta on Thursday reported it would post a surplus this year, although some quibbled with the province’s accounting practices. A spokesperson from the Finance Department said the post-recession period, where over one million jobs have been created, does not show as dramatic a tilt toward Alberta, but added that in general the strong performance of the province’s economy since 2009 has been “a positive thing for Canada.” Although the recent dramatic tilt may be exaggerated by cyclical factors, the direction of jobs flow has been apparent for some time. With Canada’s manufacturing sector on its knees and home construction tapped
out, two of the biggest industries operating in heavily-populated Central Canada have essentially produced no net jobs in the past year. And another big employer - government - has shed more than 41,000 workers as Ottawa and other nonresource provinces focus on eliminating deficits. “These figures illustrate the folly of imposing public-service cuts on a stagnant job market,” said Erin Weir, an economist with the United Steelworkers. Canadian Labour Congress economist Angella MacEwen said there are essentially two labour markets in Canada, that one in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and the one in rest of Canada. “The first thing to recognize is that there’s a problem,” she said, “because if we recognize what is happening, then the problem in Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and B.C. looks much worse.” She and other labour economists are calling for governments to become more involved in the
economy by spending on infrastructure, the green economy and other measures that, in the long run, create the conditions for economic expansion and hiring, adding that she would like to see Ottawa establish a forum with business and unions to thrash out ideas. That would help, agrees Porter, but doesn’t recommend governments going into deep debt to try and engineer a shortterm fix. He notes the last federal budget did contain some measures that should help in the long term, including money for the Champlain Bridge in Quebec and the Windsor-Detroit bridge, along with money for the auto industry. “If you treat it as something you try and accomplish in a short period of time, the results are only going to last a short period of time,” he said. But the underlying truth will remain, Shenfeld says, that given the global demand for resources, “the West is best” theme will continue in Canada for some time.

Forget the issues just pass the muffins
P
roceedings here at the B.C. legislature were briefly thrust into the spotlight last week, firing up the radio talk shows and twitter feeds. No, it wasn’t the B.C. Liberal government forcing through legislation to allow industrial “research” for things like pipeline routes in provincial parks, or the debate on sanctioned wolf and grizzly kills. It wasn’t the teacher strike vote, as the scripted motions of that ritual combat are well known to weary parents. It was muffins. More specifically, “free” muffins in a newly relocated and equipped MLA lounge, and a rack installed to hold the said muffins at a cost of $733. This was portrayed as part of a spending spree by Richmond East MLA Linda Reid, elected Speaker last summer. In fact it’s just the latest phase of a strikingly expensive refit to provide
wheelchair access, which Reid has championed. The new MLA lounge replaces a seldom-used one at the top of steep stairs high in the 1898 stone structure. The new lounge is served by a ramp near the chamber exit to another under-used room in the library, and equipped with big-screen TVs to follow proceedings, similar to those installed in the legislature chamber last year. Everything done here is expensive, from matching ornate woodwork to upgrading ancient plumbing and wiring. But the public, conditioned by media to expect corruption and scandal, would rather be outraged about free muffins. Prior to this, MLAs had to troop down to the basement dining room to put muffins and coffee on their expense accounts, or have an assistant fetch them. The outraged talk shows didn’t mention that.
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
There are access issues in the dining room too, a fact more difficult to ignore with Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux, Paralympian Michelle Stilwell and former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan now elected to serve using their wheelchairs. A costly new outside access ramp assisted Kenny Michell, who visited last week to tell his harrowing story of the Burns Lake sawmill explosion that nearly burned him to death in 2012 and
left him in a wheelchair. The NDP brought a delegation of survivors and family members of the dead from sawdust explosions in Burns Lake and Prince George. They supported the opposition’s demand for an independent inquiry, although their own demands ranged from counselling for longsuffering wives to seeing someone punished for alleged negligence. The scandal pushed in this tragic story is that some evidence was not protected by WorkSafeBC and wouldn’t have been admissible in court. Prosecutors also said they had enough evidence for charges, but the companies or executives would be able to show “due diligence” that would likely result in acquittal. What that means in English is that the explosion risk of extra-dry dust and air wasn’t fully grasped by either mill operators or WorkSafeBC. All B.C. mills are now sub-
ject to more scrutiny, and a coroner’s inquest will be calling witnesses this fall to see what lessons can be learned. Back to pipelines through parks. This may seem like a scandal to urban B.C. residents who already fret about the possibility of the 60-year-old Trans Mountain pipeline, or one of several proposed gas pipelines, intruding on a park. It’s not as well known that Trans Mountain completed a major twinning and upgrading project on the Alberta side in 2008. It crosses Mount Robson Provincial Park and Jasper National Park, without incident or scandal to date. But back to muffingate, as it’s become known around here. I don’t know why people are so cynical and uninterested in serious issues. I wish I did. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

‘300’ rises to top
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The stylish combat film “300: Rise of an Empire” topped the box office with a strong debut of $45.1 million seven years after the original “300” became an unlikely sensation. The “300” sequel opened well below the $70.9 debut of Zac Snyder’s 2007 original. But the 3-D “Rise of an Empire” beat estimates and easily edged out the weekend’s other new wide release, “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.” The movie adaptation of the ‘60s cartoon opened in second place with $32.5 million. The Liam Neeson thriller “Non-Stop” slid to third place with $15.4 million in its second weekend.

never break the peace.” And on it went, inch-byinch, mile-by-mile until the West found itself trapped in the vortex of war. Clearly the West must prepare for any eventuality and start judging Putin on his actions alone. The question is what steps should be taken? At the moment Russia has had an easy time of it. The invasion and illegal occupation of its neighbour and historical ally has been shocking but painless and will embolden Putin. Clearly a price has to be extracted for this violation while holding out the carrot of peace, prosperity and shared security. The greatest loss suffered with the collapse of the old Soviet Union in the ‘90s has been the loss of an identifiable ‘Free World’. That idea – who it is and what it stands for – needs to be quickly re-assembled. The Free World has certain values, which need to be stated and honored. Moreover, the Free World needs to make perfectly clear what it is prepared to do to defend itself from enemies, foreign and domestic. Having identified the Free World and clarified its privileges, what to do with Russia becomes clearer. It’s not a matter of blindly punishing Russia for its bad deeds; it’s a process of reducing privileges. Good behaviour is rewarded with access to Western consumer markets, capital and security. But in the case of aggression all of these privileges disappear. Russia will be isolated. None of this works in the absence of backbone and a willingness to meet fire with fire; but before the bombs start flying let’s be clear about what and whom we’re defending. WILLIAM CLAY FORD
Last grandson of Ford founder
William Clay Ford Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Co. and Lions vice chairman, said in a statement. “He also was a wonderful family man, a loving husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather.” To the masses in the Motor City, Ford was simply the owner of the Lions who struggled to achieve success on the field despite showing his passion for winning by spending money on free agents, coaches, executives and facilities. Privately, relatively few people got to know a humble and humorous guy with great stories to tell. Funeral services will be private, fittingly for a man who didn’t let the public get to know him. “I wish people knew the Mr. Ford that I knew,” former Lions general manager Matt Millen said Sunday in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “He was a very, very fascinating guy who played golf with President (Dwight) Eisenhower, ran with the Rat Pack, talked to President (John) Kennedy on the For Appointments phone. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT - William Clay Ford was born into a fortune and spent much of his life staying away from fame as he steered the family business and owned an NFL franchise. The man reverently referred to as Mr. Ford, the last surviving grandchild of automotive pioneer Henry Ford and owner of the Detroit Lions, died Sunday. He was 88. Ford Motor Co. said in a statement that Ford died of pneumonia at his home in Grosse Pointe. He worked for the company bearing his name for more than half of its 100-year history. He bought a business of his own, the Lions, a half-century ago. Despite ample opportunity to boost his ego in either role, Ford chose to carry himself in a quiet way publicly. “My father was a great business leader and humanitarian who dedicated his life to the company and the community,”

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks earned a split with the Nelson Leafs on the weekend following a pair of thrilling one-goal games. In Game 1 Archie McKinnon broke a 3-3 tie with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Hawks to a 4-3 victory, while the Leafs pulled even in Game 2 with Trail native Jamie Vlanich providing all the scoring in a 1-0 Nelson victory. It was a tight-checking, defensive battle in Game 2 on Saturday at the Nelson Community Complex where the teams managed just 35 shots combined. Patrick Zubick, the Castlegar Rebels goalie, earned the shut out for the Leafs stopping 21 Hawks shots. Zubick will likely play until either of the Leafs injured goalies, Adam Maida or Brad Rebagliati, return. Vlanich returned to the line up after missing the Spokane series with an injury. He would account for all the scoring on a first-period power play, capitalizing on a nice set up from Travis Wellman and Carson Willans with five minutes to play in the opening frame. The Leafs shut down the Hawks after that, limiting them to just seven shots in the third period. Fortunately, for the Nitehawks, in Game 1, Dallas Calvin did dress and was not required to sit out after receiving a game misconduct for kneeing while playing for the Vernon Vipers in a BCHL playoff game on Wednesday. The Hawks forward set up the tying and winning goals as B.V. came back to take Game 1, 4-3 on Friday. The Hawks Dan Holland opened the scoring on the power play 66 second into the first, but the Leafs would tie it on an Austin Seaman power play effort with 1:07 left in the opening frame. The Hawks would regain the lead on a Sheldon Hubbard drive from the point, but Nelson would tie it at 13:56 of the second, and take a 3-2 lead on a Troy Petrick goal at 11:52 of the third period. But the Hawks weren’t finished. Calvin would set up Taylor Stafford to tie it less than two minutes later, and with time winding down, Hawks pressure finally paid off when McKinnon beat Zubick in the dying seconds. The Hawks-Leafs series resumed play Monday night but scores were unavailable at press time. Game 4 goes tonight at the Beaver Valley Arena at 7 p.m. KIJHL notes: In other action the Creston Valley Thundercats and Kimberley Dynamiters split their games on the weekend with Creston taking the opening match Friday 4-1 and the Dynamiters rebounding with a 4-2 victory Saturday. Osoyoos took a 2-0 series lead over the North Okanagan Knights with 3-2 and 3-1 victories, while the Kamloops Storm won both its matches against the 100-Mile House Wranglers by scores of 8-3 and 3-0.

Leading 3-2 entering the third period, the Saints went up by two for the first time in the series on a Cody Fidgett goal before building a three-goal cushion when Thomas Hardy finished off a fine individual effort on the power-play. But the WolfPack responded with 7:23 remaining in regulation to make it a 5-3 game. See SAINTS, Page 12

By Times Staff Trail native Craig Martin has helped the Alberni Valley Bulldogs to a surprising 3-1 series lead over the Island division’s top-seed, Victoria Grizzlies, in BCHL first-round playoff action on the weekend. Martin netted the winning goal at 15:01 of the second period and goaltender Connor LaCouvee stopped 47 shots in the 3-1 win on Saturday. Martin has three goals in the playoffs, including a pair of markers in the Bulldogs 6-3 win over Victoria on Wednesday. Another former Smoke Eater, Jake Kaupilla, has also had a good series with three assists. Alberni finished almost 30 points back of the Grizzlies in the regular season standings but have pushed the Grizz, led by the Fitzgerald triplets, to the brink of elimination with 6-3, 4-0, and 3-1 wins. The Vernon Vipers have also jumped out to a 3-1 series lead over former Smoke Eater Braden Pears and his second-seed West Kelowna Warriors. After losing their opening match 4-1, the Vipers have reeled off three straight wins including a 4-1 victory on Saturday. The Penticton Vees meanwhile dispatched the Merritt Centennials in four straight, with a close 4-3 victory on Saturday. With a 3-2 victory over Nanaimo Saturday, Powell River takes a 3-1 stranglehold on the Island division playoff rival Clippers. In the Mainland division, Surrey evened their series with Langley after a 7-5 victory on Saturday, while Coquitlam has taken a 3-1 edge over Prince George with a 6-3 victory in Game 4. Martin and the Bulldogs will try to eliminate Victoria in Game 5 on Monday, but scores were unavailable at press time.

Saints set for final Scoreboard
FROM PAGE 11 But McLaughlin’s third goal of the game came on the very next shift, effectively ending any further hopes of a TRU comeback. “TRU gave us two tough games and never backed down when it seemed like we were going to start rolling and build on a lead,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. “Chris Solecki was outstanding for them again tonight and really kept things tight through the end of the second period. We seemed to find another gear in the third, which was exactly what we wanted to see with a one-goal
lead and the series on the line.” Chris Hurry was tested often in the third period as the WolfPack pushed to close the gap, but was solid and steady in a 21-save performance. Solecki allowed six goals on 43 shots and faced a total of 96 shots over the course of the two-game series. With the win, Selkirk will host the 2014 BCIHL Championships in Castlegar beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m. The finals will follow the same best-of-three format with Game 2 set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, for Sunday at 6 p.m.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - George Stroumboulopoulos has officially been announced as the new host of “Hockey Night in Canada.” The veteran CBC-TV personality will anchor NHL coverage beginning in October 2014. It’s the first major personnel change made by Rogers after acquiring the NHL rights in a blockbuster 12-year, $5.2-billion deal in November. Don Cherry, Ron MacLean, Daren Millard and Jeff Marek were also announced as “cornerstones” of Rogers’ coverage in a news release issued Monday. Cherry and MacLean will continue to host “Coach’s Corner” every Saturday. The announcement was timed with the news from CBC that Stroumboulopoulos’s Gemini Award-winning chat show would be cancelled after the completion of its 10th season.

TV LISTINGS Canadian SCreen Awards
‘Orphan Black’ steps into spotlight THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - The dark sci-fi series “Orphan Black” cast a large shadow over the Canadian Screen Awards on Sunday, dominating the bash as it claimed the night’s top TV prizes and cemented the ascendency of star Tatiana Maslany as one of Canada’s biggest luminaries. The Space show was named best TV drama while Maslany was crowned best TV drama actress. That was on top of eight awards the show collected at an earlier non-televised bash, which included acting prizes for supporting actor Jordan Gavaris, supporting actress Maria Doyle Kennedy and guest performer Natalie Lisinska. On the film side, the music-filled coming-ofage film “Gabrielle” was named best feature film, with its ebullient star Gabrielle Marion-Rivard earning best film actress. Denis Villeneuve’s surreal mind-bender “Enemy” topped the film tally with five trophies, including best director for Villeneuve. An emotional Maslany was among the first to take the podium to claim an acting prize for her chameleon-like turns as several cloned characters in the serialized smash. The Regina-bred actress thanked the Space show’s creators for giving her “this incredible opportunity” as well as her co-stars, producers, crew and family for “letting me do this weird job.” “Thank you so much, this is such an honour, thank you,” said a breathless Maslany, dressed in a gold and black gown. Backstage, she marvelled at the show’s critical success, which saw it beat out more conventional dramas including APTN’s “Blackstone,” Global’s “Bomb Girls,” and the two CTV series “Flashpoint” and “Motive.” Show host Martin Short launched proceedings with a slew of Rob Ford jokes, barbs at homegrown stars David Cronenberg and George Stroumboulopoulos and a saucy song in which he propositioned a slew of starlets in the audience. The sharp-tongued comic said he was thrilled to be MC’ing for a second year in a row, noting he was especially glad to be back in Toronto “since you legalized crack” - a not-so-veiled reference to the well-documented woes of Toronto’s mayor.

Lay out new ground rules for lazy dad Mailbox
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
have the oil changed. The money is not the problem. It’s that Dad is so irresponsible, ungrateful and disrespectful. He walks into my house without knocking and scares me to death. He leaves his cigarette butts in a beer can on my front porch. I have him over for dinner once a week, and he eats like a glutton, devouring all the week’s leftovers. He never reciprocates in any way. I’m sick of his lazy and thoughtless ways, and so is my husband. My father-in-law is completely self-centered, and it is not lost on me why he is twice divorced. What can I
find that “something” amidst all the clutter. They do not realize they have a problem, but it’s driving me crazy. What can I do? -- Going Insane Dear Going: Your parents may be overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they have accumulated over the years and even embarrassed to have you go through it. Be sympathetic and respectful toward their choices. Ask sweetly whether they would go through just one box with you to see what’s in there that might be worth keeping. If so, you can set aside the things they want, regardless of whether you agree, and get rid of the rest. But if they still refuse or won’t admit that crumbling newspapers can be tossed, try to understand that this type of hoarding is a mental illness and requires professional help. See whether there is a hoarding task force in your
area, and also contact the International OCD Foundation (ocfoundation.org) for information and referrals. Dear Annie: That letter from “Staying Warm in South Dakota” saved me a service call to my heating contractor. I had
not changed the batteries in my digital thermostat in a long time. After changing them this afternoon, my gas heater is now working just fine. No problem. Thanks. -- Jesup, Ga. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy
Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast.net, or write to: Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Creators Syndicate, 737 3rd Street, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

do? -- Finished with Him Dear Finished: First talk to your husband so the two of you are in agreement about Dad. Then tell Dad what the new rules are and what you expect. We also suggest you lock your doors, put your leftovers in the freezer before he comes over and start charging him rent. Dear Annie: My parents are compulsive hoarders. They keep everything. They have clothing that hasn’t been worn in 35 years, furniture they no longer use, reference books that are outdated, and stacks of magazines, newspapers and boxes of papers that pose a fire hazard. I would like to give things away and throw things out, but my hands are tied. I am not allowed to sort through any of their junk, because I might “toss something they need.” But I know they’d never begin to

Dear Annie: My husband and I have been married for 27 years, and I always had a good relationship with my father-in-law. When he divorced for the second time, we offered to let him live rent-free in the guesthouse behind our home. In the past three years, our feelings for him have disintegrated. Dad does absolutely nothing to earn his keep. When he moved in, we bought him a flat-screen TV, gave him furniture and helped decorate. We haven’t asked for money, and he has never offered to lift a finger. Shouldn’t he at least weed his area, clean out his garage and shovel snow around his door? Dad is 73 and in good health. We pay for his electricity, satellite TV and Internet. We gave him one of our cars, and it took a year before he started chipping in on the insurance premiums. He would never think to

today or make money on the side. Meanwhile, watch your cash flow. You might find money; you might lose money. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You feel independent and strong today, which is why you are eager to discuss inventive, original ideas with others. You might meet a new friend. Something unusual will please you today. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You feel restless and full of excitement today, perhaps because you are doing something different and unusual. Be open to new experiences and stay flexible to changing situations. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Someone might surprise you today, or you might meet someone new who is unusual and unorthodox. The introduction of new technology also is likely. YOU BORN TODAY You have resilience and mettle. Your staying power is based on courage, which lets you overcome obstacles and disappointments.
