Shooting results in prison sentence Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTER

A Lake Country man was sentenced to three years in prison Monday for shooting a former friend in their shared home. Judge Ann Wallace sentenced Kenneth Ralston, 61, to two years in prison for aggravated assault and tacked on a mandatory third year for using a firearm. Upon hearing the sentence, Ralston—a grandfather of two who was characterized by supporters in his pre-sentencing report as “kind hearted”—turned and offered his friends a simple wave. They, in turn, left the courtroom in tears. The sentence marks the end of the court process that began March 3, 2011, when Ralston was arrested for shooting longtime friend Michael Anderson in his right leg—an act to which he pleaded guilty last October. Anderson, who was 44 at the time of the shooting, was taken to hospital and underwent surgery to save his leg. According to Crown counsel Deborah Pope, it See Prison A3

Cost for Lakeshore Rd. upgrade has increased Alistair Waters ASSISTANT EDITOR

The City of Kelowna hasn’t planted a shovel in the ground yet, but already its big plan to upgrade part of Lakeshore Road and replace the Mission Creek Bridge has jumped in cost by $1.12 million. On Monday, council ap-

proved the increased cost to the plan, which was already slated at just under $10 million, after city staff said additional items and work are needed because preliminary cost estimates were based on outdated population forecasts for the area. As a result, larger utilities such as sanitary sewer pipes will be required to service fu-

ture growth, the bridge itself will have to be slightly higher than originally planned because it must meet the 200-year flood level and the cost of burying utility lines will be higher than originally thought. “While I’m not happy to have to spend the additional money, it is the right thing to do,” said Coun. who along with the rest of council voted to spend the additional money.
