Booze will be coming to grocery stores in the province in 2015
Photo BC Government
Artist’s rendering shows liquor store attached to a grocery store. Shoppers can put alcohol products in their grocery carts, but they will have to go through two cash registers. By Tom Fletcher B.C. residents will be able to buy B.C. wine from grocery stores by early next year, with some stores connected to liquor stores that offer full selection including hard liquor. The provincial government released its framework for a major overhaul of liquor policy Thursday. It proposes a small number of new licences for Vintners’ Quality Alliance (VQA) wine sales from grocery store shelves, with future expansion to include B.C.-made craft beer under the same
licences. Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap said all alcohol sales will be rung through at separate cash registers, with staff trained in an expanded “Serving It Right” course to check identification and sobriety. Customers will be able to stock up on groceries and alcoholic beverages in the same shopping cart, whether from instore B.C. wine or products from a connected liquor store. Changes to take effect by this summer include licensing B.C. wine and beer sale and tasting at farmers’ mar-
kets, permitting “happy hour” drink discounts at licensed businesses and removing the requirement for fenced beer gardens at approved outdoor festivals. Yap said the government is adopting a recommendation from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall and other health officials to tie prices to alcohol content, in an effort to reduce overconsumption. The government plans to maintain its cap on the number of liquor stores, with 670 private stores now in operation. Liquor stores are currently restricted to relocating no more than five km from their original location, but that restriction is being lifted so a licence can be sold or moved anywhere in the province. Yap said that would allow either a government or private liquor store to relocate next to a grocery store. Another major change in the works is to wholesale pricing from the government’s monopoly Liquor Distribution Branch. Currently pri-
vate stores pay a 16 per cent discount off the government store retail
price. Yap said the LDB will move to the same whole-
sale price for all stores, based on the value of each product, and retail
prices will be set by a competitive market.

Vitamin C and Lysine work together to build collagen, which strengthens and holds together the coronary cells. Inadequate amounts of Vitamin C means poor collagen. Coronary cells then fall apart just as bricks do without good mortar. Coronary arteries, closest to the heart, receive the greatest pressure. Without enough Vitamin C the collagen weakens. This sets the stage for heart attack. The work of Dr. Sydney Bush shows that vitamin C + lysine can help reverse the process. Reg $29.99 Sale $23.99 SAVE $6.00 Berry or Plain 300g size

A new EPA/ CSA certified stove produces about 90 per cent less particulate matter (smoke) which improves air quality in and around homes. Other benefits of the new models is that they require less wood and are generally safer - certified wood stoves will greatly reduce creosote buildup which is the prime cause of chimney fires. Mild temperatures raising flooding concerns within the city Submitted
Above seasonal temperatures, large amounts of melting snow and rain received the past two days is causing flooding issues and heightening concerns around the City of Cranbrook and the region today. City Public Works crews are dealing with a massive amount of water the area has seen the past two days. There are many areas of the City that are experiencing flooding issues, including parts of Highway 3, the CP rail yard and some parts of Joseph Creek. “Right now every available staff member with our Public Works department and every piece of available equipment are out there working,” says Chris Zettel, Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. “In fact, Public Works has had to bring in several rented pieces of equipment to
RDEK flood awareness Submitted With the shift in weather from snowfall earlier this week to rainfall and above-zero temperatures today, the melt is on and reports of localized flooding are starting to surface. “We have had reports of some localized flooding in Wardner, Fort Steele, Meadowbrook, Wasa and Dicken Road in the Fernie area,” said Information Officer, Loree Duczek. “We are currently mobilizing sand and sandbags for the Wardner area as we do have some overland flooding affecting 4 or 5 homes in that community and will be assessing the need for other sandbags on an ongoing basis during this rapid melt cycle.” Duczek is also encouraging residents who are in flood prone areas, or who anticipate they may experience widespread flooding, to keep the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre phone number handy. “The first call anyone makes should be to the Provincial Emergency Communications Centre at 1-800-663-3456.” E m e r g e n c y Management BC also has some good information on its website - http://www.embc.gov. bc.ca/em/floods/index. html.
help. We will continue to monitor the situation over the next number of days and keep the public updated.” Joseph Creek is currently running extremely high, higher than even the creek has seen in the spring freshet last spring. Staff is stretched trying to deal with the concerned calls from the public and are doing their very best to assist everyone. However, the public is being asked to please do what they can to help themselves as well. Residents who wish to get sandbags for their properties; Public Works has bags and sand available beside the
Public Works yard on Cobham Avenue. You will need to fill your own bags and should bring your own shovel. The City is bringing in a number of contractors to assist. “A simple thing residents or business owners can also do, is ensure any storm water drain you have around your home or business, please make sure it is clear of ice and debris so the water has somewhere to go,” Zettel said. Residents are also advised to please stay away from any creeks, including Joseph Creek and lakes including both Elizabeth and Idlewild

New options for Chelation Therapy EDTA chelation is an intravenous infusion including vitamins and magnesium that has been used for decades, safely treating hundreds of thousands of people with heavy metals and heart disease. EDTA has traditionally been used for treating people who are toxic with lead poisoning (it also binds other metals including cadmium and arsenic). I started doing EDTA chelation 15 years ago primarily treating patients who had heart disease and wanted to avoid bypass surgery, an application for which it works very well. It has also been proven effective as a treatment for people who suffer with leg pain due to peripheral vascular disease. For years, these treatments had to be done using intravenous EDTA with magnesium because the EDTA molecule is so large that it can't be absorbed through the digestive system. IV treatment works very well but it is time consuming (each treatment takes 2 to 3 hours) and expensive. Over the years a number of products have been developed as oral alternatives to EDTA intravenous chelation but
none of them has made the molecule more absorbable. As a result, only about 5% of the EDTA from these supplements would get into the blood stream, making the treatment largely ineffective. A company called Allergy Research has changed the EDTA chelation game with the development of LipoPhos EDTA. LipoPhos EDTA is made up of essential phospholipids (EPL), EDTA, alpha-lipoic acid and magnesium. EPL's are naturally occurring fats that form part of the outer membrane of cells. These fats make anything they are attached to more absorbable. By binding EDTA to nanometer sized phospholipids LipoPhos makes it possible for people to get effective doses of EDTA from the comfort of their home simply by drinking an ounce of fluid. No longer do people have to cope with the IV needle, sitting for hours and spending thousands of dollars to get the benefits of EDTA chelation. LipoPhos EDTA can also be used to improve energy and blood circulation. It is also a safe and effective way to clean up excess heavy metals from your system.

Q: Where did you live before you came here and what makes you stay? A: I moved here from Vancouver two years ago. Coming from the big city, I have to say that I was a little intimidated coming to a small community. In Vancouver, I was

it in all aspects of this community. I honestly think I’ve been given wings just by coming here and I can say with certainty that I’m not going back to Vancouver. Q: The St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino is a big part of the local economy. As a woman, do you feel like you are treated as well as a man would in your position? A: This is the first place I can truly say they really do revere women. Max Dressler (CEO) and the executive team have been very supportive. I feel that a true leader is not just a boss, but someone who is generous in nature and encourages you to grow while they support you. I feel that support here and that they really stand behind their staff. Q: Speak Your Mind, The Kootenay Women’s Show, is being held at the pavilion at the resort. Obviously you have an interest in making sure the event goes well, but beyond that, what is the most exciting part of this year’s show for you? A: I’m really looking forward to seeing Wendy Mesley, the guest speaker. She is a strong, independent woman. Luxury wheels at just the light price MALAGA, SPAIN - It might be winter here but it’s always nice to look forward to warmer days, filled with sun and clear roads. To get a sneak peek at what better weather looks and feels like, plus get a chance to drive the all new Mercedes GLA250 and GLA 45 AMG, the advanced drive program was held in Malaga, Spain. The GLA is built of the same platform as the hot, new CLA sedan that arrived last fall. Developing it into a taller, more practical small SUV is perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and ease of use. Pricing has not been confirmed but when it arrives this fall, expect the same aggressive pricing that the CLA delivers. That car starts at $33,900 but with AWD comes up to $36,800. Looks This new GLA is not as tall as the B-Class, which also shares the same platform, and not nearly as low-slung as the CLA. The GLA has a less aggressive front grille

Drive The base GLA 250 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder with a healthy 208hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the same as the B-Class and base CLA. There is plenty of acceleration and cruising on the highway is effortless.
Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. The new GLA 250 and GLA 45 AMG are certainly very attractive, powerful and fun vehicles to drive. Canada’s best-selling minivan a good used car choice
Huge selection ‘‘of previously
owned Grand Caravans are available and the healthy competition gives a buyer a distinct advantage.
Bob McHugh
’’
By Bob McHugh No other vehicle, sold in Canada, has been as dominant in a market segment as the Dodge Grand Caravan. Dodge (aka Chrysler) is often credited with inventing the “minivan” or “magic wagon”, about thirty years ago, and it makes the Grand Caravan in Canada. Competitors have come and many are
gone, as none has been able to match the amazing value package that is Dodge Grand Caravan. About six or seven out of every ten new minivans sold in Canada, in recent years, are Dodge Grand Caravans. This, in turn, accounts for the huge selection of previously owned Grand Caravans available and the healthy competition gives a buyer a distinct advantage. Consumer Reports owner surveys show higher than average repair problems with brakes, body hardware and power equipment. On the plus side, basic major mechanical stuff, like engine and transmission, get generally good reliability ratings. No matter where you live in BC, finding a service provider or replacement parts when needed should not be a problem and costs tend to be lower, important considerations for used buyers. For the 2011 model year, Dodge did a major redesign of Grand Caravan. It’s a more boxy shape than before and the interior refit incorporated the latest connectivity and safety features. Under the hood, a new 3.6-litre Pen-
tastar V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle was the only powertrain offered and all-wheel-drive was an option. In addition to being more fuel-efficient the new 3.6-litre V6 can provide a very impressive 283 horsepower and more than 260 lb-ft of torque, and it replaced three V6 engines (3.3-litre, 3.8-litre and 4.0-litre) that were offered in the previous Grand Caravan. City/highway fuel economy is rated at 12.2/7.9 L/100km
and a new driver-selectable fuel economizer mode than can adjust powertrain settings for best fuel economy, at the press of a switch. Grand Caravan trim levels are SE (which includes a Canada Value Package), SXT (which adds Stow ‘n Go second-row seating), Crew and R/T. The unique to Canada added value package with the SE trim includes 16-inch steel wheels, dual-zone temperature control, keyless entry, power mirrors, power front
windows, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio controls and driver’s knee airbag. The second-row Stow `n Go seating feature (on STX or higher trim levels) is exclusive to Grand Caravan. Improvements to the foldaway mechanism, which allows them to slide into a storage compartment, allow a single user action. This feature quickly and effectively transforms a Grand Caravan into a two-seater cargo van, without removing
made to Grand Caravan for the 2012 model year. Changes for 2013 were minor and included an upgraded DVD package with better screens and Blu-Ray capability. the five rear seats. A driver-side knee blocker air bag is standard and safety conscious new buyers could also add a “Safety Sphere” package. It includes ParkSense (rear park assist system), ParkView (back-up camera), Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection system (warns of crossing traffic when reversing out of a parking stall), rain-sensitive wipers and automatic headlamps. Ian Harwood
By Ian Harwood What are my favourite trucks? – It’s a question readers ask me all the time in the supermarket and on the street. Though not in order of preference, here are my ten choices. 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup
has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3-litre V6, 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2-litre V8. 2015 Chevrolet Colorado.
Very similar in design to its big brother the Silverado, this Mid-size truck fills a void in Canada. Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the

Not only will the Ram EcoDiesel give you 420-pound feet of torque and plenty of towing capabilities, it will also reduce co2 emissions and run on B20 Biodiesel. It’s a game changer. 2014 Ram 3500. The largest and most capable pickup Ram has to offer. Alterations to the frame including eight separate cross members, hydro formed frame rails and high strength steel add up to a truck that is capable of towing of towing up to 13,607kg (30,000lb). The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 hp and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as 12way power adjustable bucket seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel and a Bose sound system you can operate it in comfort. 2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost:
With more than 100,000 Eco Boost engines being produced monthly, you can bet a majority of these engines are finding their way into the 2014 F150 pickup. It holds the record in Canada for highest pickup sales, and at 12.9/9.0 L/100 km (city/highway) it keeps the money in your wallet a little longer. 2014 Ford Raptor is still one of my favorite off-road vehicles. It has electronic locking rear differential, shift on the fly 4 wheel drive, advance trac with roll stability control, and trailer sway control. Front and rear mounted cameras to add a second pair of eyes to the terrain around you and a 6.2-litre V8 engine to help you get up and over that hill. 2015 Ford F150. All new design features and a completely aluminum body and high strength steel in its frame make this truck up to 317 KG (700 lbs) lighter. It is powered by a 4.6-litre or a 5.7-litre engine. Can it compete with the big boys? This is the year to see. 2014 Toyota Tacoma. The Tacoma has continued to increase popularity and is a very agile four-wheeler. The double cab gives plenty of room for all your buddies and the 4.0-litre V6 engine can get you to your favorite fishing hole and back. With the addition of some modern day technology such as Backup camera, heated seats, 6 airbags, and a power invertor, this truck has everything I am looking for in a pickup. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

“Come see me for the best automotive sales experience.”
Confessions of a Curber It happened just after the last flood. TThe winter beat records for snowfall, and serious springtime saw seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a relatively r normal car.
the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius. After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!
I still rremember my first rs time. It was so easy. eas So thrilling. And I walked away with a couple of thousand thousa bucks in my pocket. Not bad for pocket a few hours’ hou work. What’s it doing here? he I thought. Apart from a couple coup of scratches on the outside ou and some moist seats, sea the vehicle seemed roadworthy. road I immediately asked about the car. I was told that th it was found full of flflood ood w water. Its previous owner wanted nothing to do with it. I bought the car for fo a couple hundred dollars. do I didn’t even have to register it in my name. n Originally, I had no n intention of doing what I did. I wanted to sell the car for parts. But, the engine still worked worke and

Homemade KITT: ‘Knight Rider’ replica car
‘‘KITT’sPalmeruniquefound
dash (complete with two video screens) and the car’s trademark front bumper on eBay.
’’
Rob Sass
By Rob Sass
Chris Palmer needed five Pontiac Trans Ams, numerous visits to eBay, countless hours of work and the generosity of several friends to recreate the car that starred in the hit 1980s television show “Knight Rider.” And he wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again. “It was totally worth it – more than worth it,” Palmer said of his KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) lookalike. “I love this car. Everybody seems to love this car.” Palmer started with a 1991 Pontiac Trans Am, which had a better drivetrain but was nine years newer than the car used in the show. That decision necessitated the purchase of four more Trans Am models – two each from 1982 and 1983 – so he could swap out the panels and parts required to make it look like KITT. The ’91 also has a fivespeed manual transmission, unlike KITT’s automatic, so Palmer chopped the gearshift and swapped out the knob to make it look authentic. Palmer found KITT’s unique dash (complete with two video screens) and the car’s trademark front bumper on eBay, and everything operates and sounds as it did on the show. KITT’s Michigan vanity license plate reads KNI6HT. The Detroit-area resident said his 3½-year project would not have been possible without the help of Sled Alley Hot Rods owner Matt Gurjack and co-worker Steve Jay; Lafata Auto Body owner Eric Lafata, who did the paint; and H&E Overlays owner Eric Thompson, who assisted with the dash installation and also made the gauge overlays. Palmer, president of the newly created Great Lakes Knights Car Club, which he and Thompson co-founded, hopes to build show-quality movie-replica cars for other fans. For now, he’s enjoying all the attention he’s getting from the ultimate KITT car. Watch the video at: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=vnPx5jaRJNo Rob Sass is the vicepresident of content for Hagerty Insurance.

A daughter fills your heart with a love that last forever. My dear, sweet Chica; you were such a strong, loving and caring young lady right to the end. I miss your laugh, our talks in the mornings, your voice, your sense of humour...I miss everything about you. In life I loved you so dearly, in death I do the same. You did not go alone that day for part of me went with you. You left me beautiful memories; your love is still my guide. And although I cannot see you, you are always by my side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one-by-one, the chain will link again. See you in my dreams Angel. Love now & forever, Your Mom xoxo

OBITUARY Marilyn Ann Olson February 6th, 1944 - February 23rd, 2014 We sadly announce the passing of Marilyn Ann Olson. Marilyn was born in Nelson, British Columbia to Florence and Henry Turner. At an early age, she moved to Kimberley, British Columbia. At age fifteen, she met the love of her life, Richard, they married five years later and settled in Cranbrook, British Columbia to raise their family. For the next fifty years, Marilyn rode shotgun and sang along with Rick as they lived and loved. Marilyn was a loving mother and wife and had a wonderful sense of humour. She babysat all of her many grandkids. She enjoyed walking, feeding the birds and solving crossword puzzles. As well, she especially loved gathering wood and picking berries with her husband. After working at K-Mart for twenty-five years, she retired and continued her friendships with the K-Mart ladies at their monthly lunches. Marilyn and Richard often enjoyed morning coffee with their friends at McDonalds. She will be missed every day. Home Improvement and Renovations If you can’t increase the size of your rooms, make them appear larger Submitted
Creating a harmoni ous effect with the lay out of a small room or cramped apartment isn’t always easy. Here are a few ideas that could help you create the illusion of more space.
The light and airy look First of all, for a small room to be visually pleasant, it is important to avoid overcrow ding. Avoid large pieces of furniture or too much furni ture. You should also avoid the temptation of displaying all your
beloved treasures and collectibles, which can leave the room looking like a mess. Declutter and you`ll keep things dustfree and headache free. Efficient storage Set up an efficient storage system so you can put away all those little objects that only gather dust and fill up
the space. For example, placing some pretty little baskets on your bookshelves can serve as a place to store things you use often. Opt for bedside tables and end tables with drawers for storing books and docu ments. Choose the right furniture Multipurpose furni

Well-placed mirrors can dramatically increase the perceived size of your room. ture can also help you free up some space. Try a sofa with draw ers in the living room, a drop leaf table in the kitchen, a storage bench in the entrance hall, or a bed with storage com partments in the bed room.
Use light colors Always choose light colors if you want to give the illusion of more space. This also allows more natural light to enter the room. Ceilings should be painted in a color that reflects light.
Mirror, mirror on the wall Hanging a large mirror on the wall, or simply leaning it against the wall, instantly makes a room look bigger. It’s almost like magic!
