Fire in Jaffray destroys workshop

embers of the Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire departments responded to the scene of a structure fire in Jaffray Tuesday, February 25.

Approximately 10 firefighters attended to the scene just after 1 pm. “When we arrived, we found a large workshop completely engulfed

in flames,” said Jaffray Baynes Lake Fire Chief Dave Boreen. “This was a really fast moving fire and our efforts focused on protecting the nearby garage and RV trailer to prevent further losses.”

“The crew did a great job yesterday and their efforts helped prevent this fire from having a much larger impact,” added Boreen.

The blaze was contained to the workshop, which is a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

The Jaffray and Baynes Lake Fire departments contained a structure fire in Jaffray on February 25.

Historical Society celebrates 50 years

or 50 years the Fernie and District Historical Society has been keeping history alive. On Thursday, February 27 the society celebrated their fiftieth anniversary with a party and the entire community of Fernie was invited. From 4 to 7 pm the society hosted an open house at the Fernie Museum complete with snacks, beverages, and cupcakes.

“Just last summer we finished our Fernie Museum project and it took five years to do so. What we are celebrating and recognizing is how we were able to do it in the first place,” explained Mike Pennock with the Fernie and District Historical Society. “We took the opportunity of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the Historical Society in 1964 to tell the story of how the opportunity to upgrade and take over this museum space came about, and that

involved the people, and the personalities, and the activities of the historical society from 1964 until 2008.”

As Pennock explained in his presentation to the crowd, several key players have contributed to the society's history.

“In the early years, 1965 to 1972, there was involvement from Fernie citizens like Ella Verkerk, who was actually the secretary-treasurer of the Historical Society from 1964 until she

passed away in 2001.

Loretta Mangan was also a huge part of the continuity of those early years, so was Douglas Fink,” said Pennock. “In 1972, other people started turning up, primarily William Quail. He was a large part of getting the Historical Society organized so that it was able to move into the old Catholic church rectory in 1979 and maintained there until 1999.”

involved, bringing a more modern approach to the society. Another notable mention is Bev Gregr, who with the help of Ella Verkerk, documented and computerized the society's collection into records.

“It was those records that we accessed beginning in the late 90's. Myself and Randal Macnair used that information to good effect,” commented Pennock. “Because we had lost the museum space in 1999, all of our artifacts had gone into storage and we started to do some community outreach with our satellite exhibits located all

around town.”

From 1999 until 2008 exhibits were held in The Arts Station and in 2004, the Society opened a temporary museum space on Second Avenue during the City of Fernie's centennial celebration.

It was such a success, the museum remained open there until 2010 when they relocated to their current location at the corner of Second Avenue and Fifth Street.

For the last five years, it has been a huge effort from the Society's board of directors to restore and renovate the building to the finished state it is in today.

Over the course of the evening on Thursday, community members packed the Fernie Museum to recognize all of the hard work that has gone into the building over the last five years, and the Historical Society over the last 50 years.

“During this five year project many dedicated volunteers came forward, not only as individuals but as businesses, that contributed their time and expertise to the project,” said Pennock.

“Without that involvement we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what we did.”

Fernie Snowmobile Association looking to expand at Coal Creek

T

he Fernie Snowmobile Association (FSA) President Bob Arnott made a presentation to Fernie Council asking for permission to increase parking at Coal Creek and a site for a snow cat building.

The FSA has been established for 30 years and they have noted snowmobiling numbers are still strong, even in a low snow year. As of February 4, FSA had 554 trail passes collected from the Coal Creek staging area, matching last year's numbers.

FSA members travel as often as they want with no trail fees.

Passes collected have risen from 1,056 in 2010/11 to 1,771 in 2012/13. However the FSA estimates the numbers for the 2012/13 season were actually 2,900 as they did not collect trail passes when the groomer was down and during family events.

This increasing trend in popularity has caused some growing pains when it comes

to parking at the staging area.

There simply isn't enough room for all the trucks and trailers on busy days.

The FSA presentation explained, “We are having more family orientated events, combined with a new cabin resulting in large crowds and thus parking pressure. Some events have seen vehicles parking back into town.”

Arnott explained to Council that with their permission, the FSA has a process to widen the road while the snow is still in place to be ready for the 2014/15 season.

The second part of the FSA's request included a space to

place a winter storage shed for the groomer in the Coal Creek area. Currently the groomers are transported through Fernie three times a week at night to groom the trails at a great expense for members in time and fuel. The FSA requested permission from the City to lease land alongside the landfill.

On June 26, 2013 the FSA presented to Council the option of making use of level ground on the southeast reclaimed portion of the former landfill, but that was subsequently ruled out.

“Right now they are moving that groomer three times a week, trailering and un-trailering it,” said Councillor McSkimming.

“I've heard this conversation before so I would like staff to take a look at the piece of land.”

With the majority in agreement, Council directed staff to look at the land in the old landfill area to potentially create a lease for the FSA to store their snowcat and address their parking issues.

ABOUT RURAL POLITICAL POWER... with MLA Bill Bennett 1. The BC government has introduced legislation to change the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act so that there will be no loss of rural seats in the Kootenays, the Cariboo-Thompson and the North.

2. The Act requires that every second election a Commission is set up to assess provincial electoral boundaries. This typically results in the loss of rural constituencies. The last Commission in 2006 stated there would be no way to avoid the loss of rural seats in 2014 unless the Act is changed.

3. Although the NDP are speaking against this important change, the BC Liberal majority will pass the legislation that will prevent the loss of 17 rural seats and will prevent the addition of anymore than the existing 85 seats in the BC Legislature.

The Cedars brings a new neighbourhood to Fernie

F

ernie's newest neighbourhood is in the works and ready for buyers. Phase one of The Cedars has been released and 28 lots are officially on the market.

Located at the base of Mount Fernie Provincial Park, The Cedars is 100 acres nestled in between the Elk Valley and the Cedar Valley. Forty-nine per cent of the area will remain green space, allowing the remainder to be developed into a subdivision. The development will focus on single family homes with roughly 150 single family lots planned, as well as the potential for townhouses and condominiums.

“The intent of The Cedars is to design a community that is very closely intertwined with the natural environment,” explained Todd Fyfe with Fernie Real Estate. “Having Mount Fernie Provincial Park right next door, having the Nordic skiing right there, which is a sport a lot of people associate with connecting more with the natural environment, and then trail networks [throughout the development], and just the location with all of the trees and the mountains around it; that's the inspiration.

“The idea is to design it around nature and then design homes that are more inspired by design and less inspired by size. That's exciting because there is definitely a trend in development and architecture where it's more about the design and quality than the space.”

Fernie Real Estate will be handling the marketing and

sales of The Cedars. Partnering up as the developers are Bill Hagel from Calgary, and a Fernie local, Martin Vale.

“It's really good to have somebody local paying attention to what's good for the community and what local people are looking for,” said Fyfe.

“I think economically, it can also do good things for the community. Not only will it add jobs and sales of building material, but it will also help to protect the prices of houses in Fernie so that more people can buy and sell in those neighbourhoods where the houses should be more affordable.”

The opening price point for a typical city size lot is $179,900.

Prices reach as high as $269,900 for an almost half an acre lot, with plenty of options in between.

“With this many lots becoming available at these types of prices, we think that we'll probably get a fair number sold pretty quickly,” Fyfe commented. “Because of the volume I see about to happen, and the fact that the buyers are going to have to purchase to

build, we are probably moving into a boom cycle, or an uplift, in the building industry in the Valley.”

The building won't be limited to any one company, giving homeowners the opportunity to choose the builder they would like to work with, as long as they comply with The Cedar's architectural guidelines.

“The increase of activity in the building sector will encourage more competition and more builders in that sector, which will probably have the effect of stabilizing prices and keeping them at a competitive level so that people can afford to buy a well priced lot and then afford to build a well priced home,” said Fyfe. “If we can achieve that... we will have lots of jobs and lots of busy people out there building, plumbing, wiring, digging, and all of those things that go along with it.”

He went on to say, “I think economically, it can also do good things for the community.

Water and sewer will be set up in the next month or two, allowing for potential buyers to put foundations and framing in as early as September.

McElhanney Consulting to develop Fernie Trails Master Plan

he City of Fernie Council has awarded the development of the Fernie Trails Master Plan contract to McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. for $72,233 including all applicable taxes. The funds will come from the province’s Resort Municipality Initiative and more specifically the allocation in the City of Fernie 2012-2016 Resort Development Strategy for the Fernie Trails Master Plan.

Twenty proposals were received with the lowest bid of $58,000. Council had allotted $75,000 in the budget for the project. The report from the Director of Leisure Services Cam Mertz regarding the award of Fernie Trails Master Plan was reviewed by Council. Mertz provided an overview and responded to Council's questions.

“Seventeen objectives were listed as

deliverables,” said Mertz. “McElhanney met and exceeded all of them. The $58,000 [bid] did meet all the Request For Proposal (RFP) requirements but did not meet all 17 goals and objectives.”

The evaluation process was weighted with 80 per cent towards meeting the goals and objectives and 20 per cent on the budget.

Councillor Dan McSkimming commented, “I struggle with this [money] disparity. Is 80/20 standard?”

Jim Hendrix, Chief Administrative Officer explained that 80/20 is not standard but this RFP had criteria that was more subjective as it considered items like the experience of the firm.

There were two separate sub-committee meetings with the Fernie Trails Alliance and evaluation sheets were used to review the bids.

“The lowest price is not always the best,” said Mayor Mary Guiliano.

As we celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) it's important to remember not only how far women have come in achieving equality with men, but how far this day has come.

The first IWD was held in 1909 in accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Since its birth in the socialist movement, IWD has grown, just as women's rights in social, political, and economic processes have grown.

The day has become a global day of recognition and celebration are held across developed and developing countries alike.

Today, IWD is an official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Georgia, GuineaBissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. While it may not be considered a holiday everywhere, annually on March 8, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, and colleagues with flowers and small gifts. In some countries, IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

Great improvements have been made since the celebration began in 1909. There are female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, and women can both work and have a family. Women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

And there are plenty of positive things happening in the Elk Valley this IWD. In Fernie, Goddess Rising will be taking over Traynor Hall at Fernie Secondary School for the day. Women of all ages are encouraged to come out for a full day of empowering workshops, dance, yoga, pampering sessions, and live music.

The Fernie Women’s Resource Centre is also hosting a night of live musical performances at The Arts Station starting at 6:30 pm.

In Sparwood, the Greenwood Mall will be hosting the community's first International Women's Day Market. The event will feature live entertainment from local singers and speakers, as well as yoga and Pilates demonstrations.

Throughout the day there will be a bake sale and crafters will be on hand selling all sorts of goodies.

So on Saturday, make sure you celebrate.

Celebrate your mother, grandmother, aunt, daughter, co-worker, or best friend. And for all of us women, let's celebrate each other.

Letters to the Editor An unwelcome development My family and I wish to inform Fernie residents about a proposed re-zoning of the community plan.

Believing Fernie-ites may not be aware that this beautiful 40 acres behind and beside the Chamber of Commerce building, through the old Little Witch Log Inn, up behind Dicken Road on Brickers Road is about to be completely destroyed. Destroyed in the name of development.

Now zoned for commercial use, a small group of developers from Alberta want it re-zoned so they can build 300 multi-family dwellings, three, maybe four stories high.

This sort of development should be concentrated in the core of the City of Fernie, not on the outskirts in a rural setting.

Enjoyed for 30 years now, our quaint quiet neighbourhood would cease to exist. The building, traffic and noise may force us out. We have wonderful neighbours who will be drastically affected. We

want to stay here in the rural peace we know. We love our neighbourhood, the town of Fernie and the people.

Have they done a traffic study or an environmental impact study? This area is a well known wildlife corridor. The salt licks and animal homes will all be destroyed. There are also well used beautiful hiking trails throughout the property.

Will there be a condition that they preserve and maintain the hiking and biking trails as the Official Community Plan requires?

This kind of building immediately on the other side of our rural zoning will greatly reduce our property value, ruin our view of the Lizard Range, and destroy the quiet Brickers Road where we walk our dogs every day.

If you disagree with another condo town being built here in Fernie, please come out to the City Council meeting on Monday, March 10 at 7 pm and show or voice your disapproval.

MLA Bill Bennett’s paid for ‘feel good facts’ ad claiming a balanced budget for B.C. in the February 27, 2014 edition of The Free Press has all the hallmarks of a Shakespearian play. But one little peek behind the curtains of the political theater and the real meaning behind the script becomes easily apparent.

Go back to 2002 when the Liberal “Energy Plan” was hatched. The people’s asset B.C. Hydro was prevented from building new energy capacity in the energy rich snowcapped mountains of B.C. The Liberals then allowed campaign donors to form private energy companies as B.C. Hydro was forced to buy energy from them at inflated prices. Then the Liberals drained ICBC and B.C. Hydro coffers to cover for their fiscal mismanagement late last term, thinking they would lose the election and leave a mess behind to smear the opposition. But alas, the voting audience was lured in with the balanced budget ballet and mesmerized by liquid natural gas sonnets.

The Liberals were reelected and a surprised Mr. Bennett immediately went about raising electricity rates to try and stall the fiscal implosion of B.C. Hydro, which was supposed to happen on the NDP’s watch. Meanwhile, Christy Clark is caught using children as pawns in her war against teachers, attempting to instigate a strike over class sizes. Why? Stripping teachers of the right to bargain class sizes means she can stuff more kids in a box, saving money on education, balancing the budget at the expense of the intelligence level of the next generation.

So while the script calls for a balanced budget the message is clear: B.C. is $69 billion in the hole; as another $90 billion obligatory debt to campaign donors hides on B.C. Hydro’s books; as the B.C. Liberals attack children through teachers using millions in taxpayer dollars.

Sure, maybe they can claim to have lowered taxes and spending. But they are merely stupefying the next generation while raising your hydro and insurance rates in order to do it. Close the curtains, this show stinks!

Letters to the Editor continued from page 6 Response to letter by David Pasivirta regarding student funding Back in my high school days, class size was not an issue. Our school day was from 9 am to 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

If some of us had problems with some course subjects, the teacher would make time after 3:30 pm to 5 pm and take time to explain the topics further. On assignments that required information that had to be obtained from further sources than just the textbooks, we used the school library and the city public library. We could use the library after 3:30 pm for our use, even though school classes were finished for the day. I used the school library many times after 3:30 pm and sometimes left the school at 6:30 pm.

In those days, when leaving the building, some

of the school teachers were still in the building.

There were no lieu days like today. The only days off from school were the regular statutory holidays, Christmas break, and there was no such thing as spring break.

Since then, teachers have been given inches in their working conditions but in reality have taken a mile. Example: how come some male teachers have quit wearing a suit with a shirt and tie? All private school teachers do wear the proper dress code. You teachers have created your own problems because of listening and believing everything that is said by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. The provincial government is not to blame, but the blame belongs to the B.C. Teachers’ Federation.

Elk Valley Minor Hockey Association’s Pee Wee Rep team has won their provincial playoffs to advance to the Pee Wee Tier 4 Provincials to be held in Richmond, B.C. from March 15 to 21. East Kootenay Community Credit Union has generously donated $500 to assist the team with the cost of travelling and accommodations during the championships. Council supports Ferry Coalition

he City of Fernie is sending a letter of support to the BC Ferry Coalition. The City of Fernie received a letter from Barry Pages, chair of the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District (SQCRD) Board regarding the BC Ferries service cuts and fare increases announced by the province of B.C. on November 18, 2013.

“Ferries are a part of highways,” said Fernie Councillor Randal Mcnair. “If some other corner of government were to tell us that use of our highways were to be cut back 20 per cent of the time, I would hope that the folks in the Queen Charlottes and that part of the world would come to our aid in the coast communities and the Kootenays. What's transpiring is going to have considerable impact on the economic viability of many of these communities. We know what it's

like to go through a difficult time. We know how important the transportation corridors are to our communities in the Kootenays and in the Peace, the Fraser Valley and the islands.”

The SQCRD board is requesting support to fight the proposed cuts to BC Ferries’ services and is supportive of the BC Ferry Coalition's continued efforts to oppose these cuts and fare increases.

“The SQCRD board is undivided in its concern over the rising costs and the proposed reduction in ferry services to coastal communities,” wrote Pages. “Many hotels across the province have already shown concern over the sustainability of their business, as they are seeing an unprecedented amount of booking cancellations brought on by the BC Ferries service cuts.”

The BC Ferry Coalition is an ad hoc steering committee of allied residents from coastal communities around B.C.

The GLA is built of the same platform as the hot, new CLA sedan that arrived last fall. Developing it into a taller, more practical small SUV is perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and ease of use.

Drive The base GLA 250 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder with a healthy 208hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the same as the B-Class and base CLA. There is plenty of acceleration and cruising on the highway is effortless.

Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level.

The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque.

The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring.

Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. The new GLA 250 and GLA 45 AMG are certainly very attractive, powerful and fun vehicles to drive.

What are my favourite trucks? – It’s a question readers ask me all the time in the supermarket and on the street.

Though not in order of preference, here are my ten choices.

2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra ½ ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3-litre V6, 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2-litre V8.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Very similar in design to its big brother the Silverado, this Mid-size truck fills a void in Canada. Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the Colorado can tow more than 3,039 kilograms (6700 lbs) a 2.5L I-4 engine is standard with an optional 3.6L V6 with a six speed automatic transmission.

2015 GMC 3500HD Denali is a beast. This truck is built to pull and with 10,251 KG (22,600 lbs) of trailer towing capacity

it does just that. The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 hp and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as 12-way power adjustable bucket seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel and a Bose sound system you can operate it in comfort.

2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost: With more than 100,000 Eco Boost engines being produced monthly, you can bet a majority of these engines are finding their way into the 2014 F150 pickup. It holds the record in Canada for highest pickup sales, and at 12.9/9.0 L/100 km (city/highway) it keeps the money in your wallet a little longer.

2014 Ford Raptor is still one of my favorite off-road vehicles. It has electronic locking rear differential, shift on the fly 4 wheel drive, advance trac with roll stability control, and trailer sway control. Front and rear mounted cameras to add a second pair of eyes to the terrain around you and a 6.2-litre V8 engine to help you get up and over that hill.

2014 Ram 3500. The largest and most capable pickup Ram has to offer. A 6.7l Cummins turbo diesel engine delivers 385 hp and 850 lb ft of torque.

Consumer Reports owner surveys show higher than average repair problems with brakes, body hardware and power equipment. On the plus side, basic major mechanical stuff, like engine and transmission, get generally good reliability ratings. No matter where you live in BC, finding a service provider or replacement parts when needed should not be a problem and costs tend to be lower, important considerations for used buyers.

For the 2011 model year, Dodge did a major redesign of Grand Caravan. It’s a more boxy shape than before and the interior refit incorporated the latest connectivity and safety features. Under the hood, a new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle was the only powertrain offered and all-wheeldrive was an option.

Grand Caravan trim levels are SE (which includes a Canada Value Package), SXT (which adds Stow ‘n Go second-row seating), Crew and R/T. The unique to Canada added value package with the SE trim includes 16-inch steel wheels, dual-zone temperature control, keyless entry, power mirrors, power front windows, tilt and telescopic steering

wheel with audio controls and driver’s knee airbag.

The second-row Stow `n Go seating feature (on STX or higher trim levels) is exclusive to Grand Caravan.

Improvements to the foldaway mechanism, which allows them to slide into a storage compartment, allow a single user action. This feature quickly and effectively transforms a Grand Caravan into a two-seater cargo van, without removing the five rear seats.

A driver-side knee blocker air bag is standard and safety conscious new buyers could also add a “Safety Sphere” package. It includes ParkSense (rear park assist system), ParkView (back-up camera), Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection system (warns of crossing traffic when reversing out of a parking stall), rain-sensitive wipers and automatic headlamps.

No significant changes were made to Grand Caravan for the 2012 model year. Changes for 2013 were minor and included an upgraded DVD package with better screens and Blu-Ray capability.

The LEAF looked like any normal edition but was loaded with 360-degree cameras, laser scanners, radar and other ‘electrickery’, as a TV character called Catweazle once described the workings of a light bulb. I felt like that

character from my childhood, who incidentally was a caveman hurled through time into the 1960s.

The car pulled away smoothly, stopped at those red lights and signalled turns, a sequence of manouevres rarely witnessed on our roads when there are humans at the wheel. It slowed when a car driven by a human changed lanes ahead of us on the off-road circuit. I would have hit the phoney ped that bounded out from the curb but not this ghost driver that took instantaneous evasive action.

My drive was on an airport-based circuit away from the real world, while over in Japan Nissan has conducted some demonstrations on freeways. By the end of this year, a dedicated track featuring real townscapes – masonry, not model buildings - will be ready. It will enable testers to push the vehicles impossible to carry out on public roads to ensure the technology is safe.

When the car is available for real world driving, a combination of GPS navigation and a tablet-style screen will enable the non-driving driver to direct the car to work, home, play or park with precision. You will be able to drive your favourite routes and it will map and record the preferences for future trips.

The mock supermarket-shopping demo was the most enjoyable part of my experience because driving around full parking lots looking for a space is not my favourite pastime. That said, I’m not thrilled at the thought of fun being removed from my daily driving. I like the use of technologies to avoid crashes but I can’t foresee a time when I would want to commit to fully-autonomous driving.

Not because I don’t trust the technology but because I enjoy the challenges thrown up my daily drive.

Confessions of a Curber It happened just after the last flood. TThe winter beat records for snowfall, and serious springtime saw seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink.

One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a relatively r normal car.

the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius.

After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.”

Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to.

I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business.

I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said.

The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his.

He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way.

A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles.

Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew?

My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash.

Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale.

Chris Palmer needed five Pontiac Trans Ams, numerous visits to eBay, countless hours of work and the generosity of several friends to recreate the car that starred in the hit 1980s television show “Knight Rider.”

And he wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again.

“It was totally worth it – more than worth it,” Palmer said of his KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) lookalike. “I love this car. Everybody seems to love this car.”

Palmer started with a 1991 Pontiac Trans Am, which had a better drivetrain but was nine years newer than the car used in the show. That decision necessitated the purchase of four more Trans Am models – two each from 1982 and 1983 – so he could swap out the panels and parts required to make it look like KITT. The ’91 also has a fivespeed manual transmission, unlike KITT’s automatic, so Palmer chopped the gearshift and swapped out the knob

Recreational Land Use Permits

WHEREAS, Pursuant to Section 175 of the Community Charter, the Council of the District of Sparwood may enter into agreements longer than five (5) years with elector consent.

Notice is hereby given that the District of Sparwood intends to enter into ten (10) year Recreation Land Use Permit agreements with Tembec Forest Products Limited, The Nature Conservancy of Canada, Canfor, the British Columbia Hydro Authority and 6069786 Canada Inc. The agreements clarify the relationship and objectives between the District of Sparwood (Permittee) and the Permittor. The agreement is for a term of ten (10) years during which either party can terminate the agreement on one year's notice.

Council will authorize entering into the agreements unless 10% (283) of the electors of the entire District of Sparwood sign elector response forms and submit them to the District by the deadlines of 4:00 pm MT on Monday, March 10, 2014. If 10% (283) electors sign and submit elector response forms by the deadline, Council may not proceed with the ten (10) year term unless the agreements receive assent of the electors in a voting proceeding.

The District estimates that 283 is the total number of eligible electors who would need to submit signed elector response forms in order to prevent the District from entering into the agreements for the ten (10) year term.

Elector responses must be in the form established by the District. The snow banks are such that the snow blower will be utilized after every snow event. The snow banks can be hazardous to children – tunnels can collapse - children can fall off the banks onto the roads.

The purpose of the Committee is to act as citizen ambassadors to advise the District on the implementation of the Official Community Plan (OCP) and to monitor the District’s progress in achieving the objectives of the OCP. Playoff series ends in defeat for Ghostriders

he Fernie Ghostriders playoff campaign ended in a 7-1 loss against the Kimberley Dynamiters on Monday, March 3.

The Dynamiters started strong in the best of seven series, winning the first two games before the Riders managed to come back with a victory of their own on Friday, February 28. However, with a third win in Fernie the following night, the Dynamiters needed only one more victory to clinch the series and secure a place in the second round.

Kimberley received their wish in front of over 500 spectators in their home arena on Monday night with a convincing victory over the Riders. While Ghostrider Josh Teves opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, the Dynamiters went on to score seven unanswered goals to win the game and the series.

Despite a well-known rivalry between the two teams, the Riders were praised by their hosts after the game for their sportsmanship and conduct throughout the series.

Social media exchanges between the players and their supporters displayed a range of emotions, particularly for those who have now completed their final junior hockey

season.

The Dynamiters will now face Creston in the second round of the playoffs.

The win secured the team a place in the provincials, taking place in Lumby, March 5 to 8. It also secured Laura Serafini the MVP for the tournament. Both first and second place teams will be going to the provincials.

It was a busy weekend for The Griz as he hopped from one event to the next during the annual Griz Days celebration. He even managed to find a little time to fire his musket into the sky and bring us more powder!

Danielle Cardozo makes the Top 10 in MasterChef Canada

anielle Cardozo, from Cranbrook, has made it into the Top 10 home cooks for MasterChef Canada. The home cooks recently went back to their roots for an emotional Mystery Box Challenge, followed by a difficult noseto-tail Elimination Challenge.

At the halfway point in the competition, it was an emotional start to the latest episode. The home cooks lifted the mystery box to find a childhood photo of themselves. The judges wanted them to channel the passion for cooking they found as youth into the first dish of the night.

Cardozo's dish wasn't shown but it was reminiscent of the photo that was taken at Loon Lake, in Grasmere, B.C., her family's favourite annual camp spot.

“We used to eat the crayfish from the lake. And what more typical dish but pork and beans. I did an elevated play on that.”

Cardozo made a lentil and pancetta salad with a spiced prawn but it wasn't enough

to impress the judges.

Eric Chong won the first challenge with his Char Siu Tong Mein (Chinese BBQ Pork with soup noodles) that his grandfather used to make for him.

Chong's win meant he would sit out the elimination challenge and have a hand in the remaining home cooks' fate. The judges presented the next ingredient, an Alberta beef cow.

“A big culinary trend is nose to tail eating using every part of the animal,” said judge Claudio Aprile.

With 10 different proteins, Chong chose which protein each home cook would have to cook in the pressure test including brain, tongue, bone marrow, sweet breads, ox tail, and liver.

“I definitely know which two I want to send home,” said Chong. “I'm giving them the brains and tongue for sure.”

Chong tasked Cardozo with cooking the tongue and Kaila Klassen with the brains.

“When I saw that he chose tongue for me, I knew he had a target on me,” said Cardozo. “He obviously saw

me as competition. During the competition, he told me he wasn't gunning for me and he gave me what was remaining from his choices. I laughed tonight as he texted me and apologized. He knew the truth would come out that he was gunning for me. I have serious respect for Eric, he played the game well in both a culinary sense and a social sense.”

Cardozo tried to take that awful layer of skin off the tongue but it wouldn't budge.

“I could barely cut through it; I had no clue.”

She did know tough meat could be cooked in a pressure cooker in a significantly reduced amount of time but she had never used a pressure cooker before.

“I have to laugh because I think I had the judges a little nervous. Used improperly it can be extremely dangerous.”

“It wasn't until the last moment that I was able to taste it,” said Cardozo. “I was still nervous. We were entering the Top 10, and I served them salad and meat.”

“When I saw the look on Claudio's face, I knew that I was going to make Top 10. I

was exhilarated! When you're in Top 50, you are praying to make Top 16. When you make Top 16, you are praying to make Top 10!”

Back at home the Heid Out in Cranbrook was packed on March 3 as Cardozo served both dishes from the episode: Prawn, lentil, and pancetta salad and roasted beet and beef tongue salad.

Cardozo will be at Fernie Alpine Resort this weekend working in the kitchen for a private dinner. Chef Dave Bohati, of Market Restaurant Calgary, is teaming up with the chefs of Corner Pocket.

He has invited Cardozo to provide her experience in the kitchen. “I am excited to be cooking in my hometown for the first time! It was once my home and will always be where my heart is.”

Elk Valley locals will have a chance to dine on Cardozo's budding talents as she is serving a five course dinner at Funky's Pizza on March 29.

A rocky road for Brett Wildeman Art Walk

F

inding your way can often be a rocky road. Some stumble through life, while others blaze trails. Brett Wildeman has been slowly but steadily crafting his sound over the past few years while performing in intimate venues throughout B.C. and Alberta. The musician is bringing his 'A Rocky Road Tour' to Fernie on Wednesday, March 12.

A native of British Columbia's wild west coast, Wildeman's songs are heavily influenced by the rural coastal environment where he has spent the majority of his life. His sprawling lyrics and moody guitar tones, coupled with a unique delivery are staples of his raw folk music.

The tour is an ode to the fossil fuel dependant path Canada's federal and provincial government is leading us down, as the Joint Review Panel has given the green light to the Northern Gateway Pipeline. Wildeman feels this is the time when Canadians must dig in or let the carbon emissions levy break.

2013 was a year of success and artistic growth for Wildeman, with more than 40 tour dates, the release of his latest album Mother Earth, and a 700 km carbon-neutral cycle-tour of coastal B.C. In 2014, Wildeman has turned his focus to the release of a forthcoming EP and carbon neutral touring efforts.

ver 100 women from the Elk Valley will gather together to take part in free pampering sessions, numerous workshops and to hear inspirational women speak in a day of sharing, empowerment and enlightenment on International Women’s Day (IWD). The event will take place at Fernie Secondary School, Saturday March 8, 10 am to 5:30 pm, and is open to any woman in the Elk Valley. People are encouraged to pop in, even if they just come for the $5 lunch, or to hear one of the speakers. It would be great for everyone to get involved at some level. The first 100 participants receive a great little goodie selection that includes a

journal, some samples and $20 off facials at 901 Spa. “There is something for everybody at this year’s event,” said Rachel Cline, event organizer. “We have made the schedule as varied as possible so that no matter what age you are or what interests you have there will be something that you will enjoy.”

Following the success of last year's event entry is free, with door donations going to local women’s groups. The pamper sessions are free and refreshments are by donation, so that everyone feels there is some part of the day they can access.

parwood elementary students will soon have a new way to showcase their artistic talents.

The Sparwood Arts Council is bringing a new program to town; Art Walk.

Starting this spring, art by elementary students will be framed and hung around the community in businesses and public areas. Twice a year the art will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to a charity of the students’ choice.

On behalf of the Sparwood Arts Council, Sherry Benko spoke to Sparwood Council on February 17 about the new program. The goal is to begin with hang-able works of art from two students in every class from kindergarten to grade six.

“To start out with the project we'd like to keep it a little bit on the small side, that way we know we have a guaranteed winner,” said Benko.

She went on to comment, “If you have a good following in art at a young age, you're more likely to continue on. It's just like sports or anything else. If you participate when you're young, you're a team member and you will continue to be a team member as you grow up.”

Mayor and Council were pleased to hear about the new program.

“I think it's a fantastic idea,” remarked Councillor Joanne Wilton. “It's great whenever we can get young children involved in the arts.”

The Sparwood Arts Council is currently working to get community sponsors for the program. The first Art Walk showing is expected to be on display around Sparwood this spring.

JANCO, MARY: Mary was born on March 27, 1928 in Zuberec, Czechoslovakia to parents Joseph and Annie Priemaza.

In 1934 she moved to Canada with her family and started out their new life first in Natal, then moving to Middletown and finally settling permanently in Sparwood.

On April 14, 1945, she married the love of her life, Louis Janco and started to raise her own family. Together they were blessed with their son, Louis and three daughters; Debbie, Barb and Kathy. The births of her grandchildren Jodi and Jeremy brought great joy to her and she loved being a grandmother.

Mary was proud to be a part of her first great granddaughter, Kennedy’s baptism and was happy to be such a big part of her first two years of life.

Mary’s family was always her greatest accomplishment and she loved her “fur babies” as though they were her own.

She loved to garden and in her later years when she was unable to get around as well as she used to, took up bird and wildlife watching, hummingbirds being her favorite up until her dying day.

She is now at peace and has been reunited with Louis.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date with inurnment to follow at Rivercrest Cemetery.

BAILEY, KEITH: JUNE 5, 1935 – FEBRUARY 26, 2014 Keith passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife, Annette and son Keith Jr. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, he later made his way to BC as a young man to work for his family at the Texaco Service Station. It was while working there he met the love of his life Annette. They were married in Natal on May 24th, 1958.

He spent the rest of his days raising his family and enjoying life to the fullest here in the valley. Keith enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours camping, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed curling and most of all snowmobiling in our beautiful valley. There was even a couple of trips over the mountain pass to Banff, Alberta.

Keith was known for his very friendly personality and always there to offer a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was very generous with his time and always supportive of any activities his children or grandchildren were involved in. Lots of miles were driven hauling his two daughters and their horses to horse shows and gymkhanas over the years in the summer and spent lots of weekends at the snowmobile cabin with his son.

Keith is predeceased by his parents and infant son, Gary. He is survived by Annette, his wife of 65 years, his three children; Keith Jr., Colleen (Mike), Lynnette (Stephen), four grandchildren, Lacey, James, Kyle and Jared, along with his seven siblings.

Our loving husband, father and papa, rest in peace, your memory will live on forever in our hearts and we will miss you dearly.

At Keith’s request there will be no formal service at this time.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Those wishing to make a a memorial donation in his memory can do so to: Lilac Terrace (Building Project), PO Box 1587, Sparwood, BC, V0B 2G0.

The legend of the Griz lives on

G

riz Days 2014 was as extreme as the temperatures. This year’s theme was wild and spirited mountain culture.

The Baby Griz Crawl took the stage during the craft fair at the Fernie Community Centre with Griz in the crowd cheering the little ones on. Rotary was busy selling Griz Days pins at the door.

The frigid temperatures brought out the strong mountain characters for the Extreme Griz competition at Fernie Alpine Resort on Saturday afternoon. The fifteenth annual Classic Canadian Street Hockey Tournament had the sticks on the ice behind Park Place Lodge complete with barbecue and a warm fire pit. And for a Griz Days first, The Northern and Boardstiff teamed up to hold the first ever ‘Bacon Spectacular’ at The Northern Hotel.

After the parade there was live music by Los Morenos and a refreshment garden at The Arts Station. The much anticipated Commit 2 Pain Rail Jam filled the CP Station Square with serious talent and fireworks.

I

t has been such an honour to have the opportunity to interview and learn more about each of these six outstanding women you will read about. They are known and recognized in their community for their outstanding dedication, passion and consideration for what they do. They are examples of positive change and empowerment and strive to make their communities a better place each and every day.

While working on this project, it became quite apparent to me that the six ladies I interviewed could have easily been 60 if space was no object. I am so grateful to know so many inspirational women who make huge impacts on our communities in the Elk Valley whether it be through volunteering, or opening a business that provides a great product or service. These women shape who our children become, and are people that our children can look up to. They are stay-at-home moms, employees and entrepreneurs.

I believe women have the power to make changes for the better, while being strong influential role models for the people around them. Women have the chance to brighten lives through monumental missions, or simple things such as welcoming a new family into a community, or inspiring other women to chase their dreams into a reality.

I am thankful for all of the amazing, brilliant women in my life, personally and professionally who inspire me to be a better person, follow my dreams and help me to remember that the most important thing is to enrich the lives of others around me. These women have shaped who I have become, and will help shape the person my daughter and many other young ladies will become.

I hope you enjoy learning more about these six wonderful women, and take the opportunity to notice the women around you so freely giving time and energy to make the world a better place.

The Free Press Celebrating women in non-traditional occupations

By Nicole Obre As we celebrate International Women’s Day it’s important to remember how far women have come in achieving equality with men, especially in the workplace. While women have continued to shine in the traditionally female-dominated sectors, caring for, educating, and helping others, there has also been a recent rise in women taking on nontraditional occupations.

Here at The Free Press, our office is made up entirely of women. In an industry that has always been considered a ‘boy’s club’, we are proud to have seven amazing women at the helm of the community’s newspaper. There has always been an unfortunate under-representation of women in hard news, business, and politics. But things are beginning to look up.

Did you know that women premiers now lead the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the territory of Nunavut? Christy Clark has been governing B.C. since March 2011, Alysson Redford is head of the government in Alberta, Kathy Dunderdale was reelected premier of Newfoundland and Labrador in October 2011, and Eva Aariak has been Nunavut’s premier since November, 2008.

Getting a little closer to home, some of our own communities are currently led by women. 2011 saw two female mayors elected in the Elk Valley: Mary Giuliano for Fernie and Lois Halko for Sparwood.

It’s no wonder why political parties understand the attraction of female leaders. They are seen as being credible and innovative. Many people believe that they will be more attentive to social issues, such as the preservation of the public health system and improvements in education.

Other less traditional occupations such as firefighting, trucking, and auto repair are increasingly practised by women. With such a high demand in B.C. for skilled tradespeople, now is the perfect time for women to consider a career in the trades. Tradeswomen of all ages are finding challenges, independence, good pay, and job satisfaction.

The Elk Valley wouldn’t be what it is today without the mining industry and women are beginning to be more prominent, whether it’s on-site in a trades position, or off-site in an office position. The College of the Rockies is currently offering a three week training program that introduces women to the many different types of careers available within the coal mining industry.

At the end of the day, choosing a profession is a personal choice. Every industry has its value, and every person (male or female) has their own likes and dislikes. Whether women are finding themselves in ‘traditional’ or ‘non-traditional’ jobs, the victory is that women are continuing to increase their presence in the workforce within many different industries. Hopefully one day the two categories will disappear and all industries will be equally populated with both women and men.

What types of volunteering have you done within the community?

I am an active member of Sparwood Search and Rescue, Frank J Mitchell Elementary School Parent Advisory Council, and I have volunteered with a variety of organizations around town, mostly with organizations that help children and/or literacy.

What project have you done that you are most passionate about?

Everything that I do I do because I am passionate about it.

I try to help with projects that will not only benefit the people in the community, but the community itself. With the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Committee, we are about to fundraise for two toddler play structures in Sparwood.

In which ways do you see a benefit to your community?

I do a lot of work with children in the early years and with that our committee hopes that we can help these children grow to their full potential. Within the ECD committee we try to get community organizations to work together, and to develop partnerships. With Search and Rescue we are community based and work as a team, alone I am only one.

What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are the challenges?

I enjoy everything that I do and getting to see a plan go into action, and see the successes that come out of that plan. I like that I have the opportunity to learn from those experiences that don’t quite go as planned.

The challenges that I have faced are just trying to communicate exactly what we are trying to offer and how this will be a benefit, but with this I am learning how to communicate with the community differently, and use all of my resources.

What are your hobbies and things you love about your community?

I love being outside and being active outside with my family.

I am more of a summer person and enjoy camping and hiking.

I love that we have a beautiful backyard into the mountains and have the opportunity to live around all the wildlife that we have in Sparwood.

What do you strive to accomplish in the next 5 years?

Occupation: Secretary, Elkford Secondary School. I just started in September, 2013.

What types of volunteering have you done within the community?

Elkford Early Childhood Development Committee (in the past), Parent Advisory Committee at Rocky Mountain Elementary School, Wildcat Grass Smash Volleyball Tournament – annually during Wildcat Days. This year will be the ninth year. Wapiti Ski Club – Secretary/Treasurer, Elk Valley Vista Condo Board Member, Citizen Advisor Committee member and Madera Ranch RV Resort Board member.

What program/project/volunteering have you done that you are most passionate about?

All of them are important as they all add value and enjoyment to Elkford and area. Wapiti Ski Club is no exception.

In which ways does it benefit/assist others and your community?

Wapiti Ski Club was built and started offering alpine skiing in Elkford 40 years ago. It is made up of dedicated, hardworking, community-minded volunteers. Without the volunteers the hill would not run. Current estimates are averaged at over 7,500 volunteer hours per season.

Wapiti offers first time employment for the youth in Elkford during the winter season, on average hiring 30 youth each year.

Wapiti offers recreational activity during the long winter months. It offers a place for youth to gather and get physical

activity. It is much more affordable then going to Fernie and it serves the alpine skiing needs of many residents of Elkford.

What do you enjoy most about it, and what are the challenges?

Wapiti offers extra fun days like Family Fun Day, Winter in the Wild activities and free lessons through Non Stop Adventures for one weekend a year, as well as one day a year for the elementary school and one day a year for the high school. It is days like this where all the hard work comes together and the kids are having a great time that it makes it all worth it. The challenges are finding enough volunteers to do the countless jobs needed to run for three and a half months of the year. It is not common to have a primarily volunteer run ski hill anymore. We are lucky.

What do you strive to accomplish in the next 5 years?

My goal in life is happiness and health for my family, myself and my community. The way I think I can accomplish this is to stay active and find a balance in life. I think it is important to be involved in your community and be a part of the process, not part of the problem. It is easy to complain about how poorly things are being done but unless you are actively trying to improve it in a proactive way it is likely you are making it worse.

Can you explain the difference you know woman can make in their community?

I am a strong believer that women have a huge amount to offer in the workforce as well as in the community. I know a lot of women who choose to primarily stay at home to raise their kids and volunteer in the community. It is rewarding and

lets you keep your skills up, network and it allows potential employers see the assets you have.

Can you tell us anything else about yourself?

My family is very important to me – the one that lives with me and my extended family.

Living in a connected and safe community is important to me.

I can tell you I won an award through Alberta Venture Magazine and it was featured in the magazine. The award was Exemplary Young Employee of the Year.

Not at all – lots of women within our company have been promoted to senior positions

I’m always happy to go to work; and happy to go home. It’s important to keep work and home separate and not let one affect the other How is working in a small town different from a city?

Because I grew up in Fernie, I already had good relationships with the community. Being in a small town allows you to really get to know your customers.

hat types of volunteering have you done within the community?

Much of my volunteering has been as the Wildsight Elk Valley branch’s Community Program Coordinator, in which I've played a role in creating the Community EcoGarden, Little Sprouts, AppleShare, Seed Swaps, Growing with Gardens, Keeping Food Real workshops, Fernie Earth Day celebrations, Fernie Time Exchange, Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show, Green Drinks, Fernie Ride Board, Advocates for Local Living, Mug Club, Think Tank Cinema, and Think Local First. Outside of that role, I've also been involved with creating the Wednesday Night Socials, Community Dollars and the Fernie Children’s Festival. None of these amazing projects would have happened if it was just me. So many other amazing volunteers in our community played key roles to bring these projects to life.

What project have you done that you are most passionate about and in which ways does it benefit your community?

The Community EcoGarden just celebrated its tenth anniversary. It's amazing to think it's been part of my life for the last decade. That definitely tops the list! Community gardens serve a diverse group of people and get the community outside to connect around growing food. The Community EcoGarden in Fernie helps our community take steps towards

food security and has created a beautiful green space for our community to use.

What do you enjoy most about it, and what are the challenges?

One of the best parts of the EcoGarden is the EcoGarden Advisory Committee. This core group of committed volunteers has done such amazing things to grow and expand the EcoGarden. Another great part is working with the school groups and kids camps that we run.

Harvesting carrots is like a magic act to kids. I love that!

Challenges include overall maintenance of the hoses and garden beds. A big challenge is also getting volunteers out to help care for the garden.

What do you strive to accomplish in the next 5 years?

Volunteer less.

What are you hobbies, and things you love about your community?

I play for Fernie's Avalanche City Roller Girls. It is the most

fun possible. I highly recommend coming out to check it out, we have four games in Fernie this year and one in Sparwood.

Can you explain the difference you know woman can make in their community?

We all have the power to make a difference and create the community we want to live in. Things may take longer than you thought, or turn out differently that how you originally planned, but that's okay. Even in failure there are seeds of success, sometimes things can turn out better than you even planned. When we follow what we are passionate about and get involved, you and your community benefit. When we connect with others in our community who are passionate about similar things, magic can happen.

I purchased the business in 1997, but it has been around for about 30 plus years, if not more.

I am very lucky to have taken over a well established business.

What is your job?

I am a stylist and owner/operator. I really just do a bit of everything.

How did you get into it?

I always wanted to be a hairstylist. I had a passion for it and always loved it. I graduated from high school, went to hair school, then Lori Mitchell the previous owner gave me a job here at the salon and I have been here every since.

What do you enjoy most about it?

My clients for sure. I have amazing clients that are like family. Some we see every week. We are lucky here at ET because our great clients make our job way easier and so enjoyable.

Do you feel there are still challenges being a woman in business?

For me, now that I have been doing it so long, not really. But as a women you really have to stand up for yourself and be frank.

How do you continue to evolve your business?

It is difficult sometimes, but I have a supportive family. My husband is great and I have both sets of parents here, so I am lucky. My husband Darcy is really great and does the upkeep

2006, but I have been painting pretty much all my life.

What is your job?

Painter contractor, commercial and residential (with a big brush).

How did you get into it?

I am a fourth-generation painter; my grandfathers were all painters and artists. I believe it’s in my blood and now both my children, Jocelyn and Derek are painters; I love passing on my passion to the crew that work for me as well.

What do you enjoy most about it?

I enjoy the pure satisfaction of the change that paint transforms a place. Painting is the least expensive way to “change-up” your home/office/life.

What are the challenges?

The most challenging part of my job is getting the job done within the project estimate and time.

Deadlines are hard to beat sometimes when you have to wait for paint to dry!

Do you feel there are still challenges being a woman in business?

Absolutely yes, especially working in the trades industry where it is mostly male dominant. I have gained the respect through the years with contractors to know that I can do the job with greater attention to detail.

How do you continue to evolve your business?

I am taking on larger commercial contracts, having a greater challenge to manage more than one crew at a time during the short summers we have in the Elk Valley.

Do you plan to stay in this role?

I do plan to do more of the management part of the company and have the crew pick up the brush more than myself. I am training my son to take responsibility of his own crew to free up my time.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy all outdoor activities, especially walking my 14 year old Alaskan Malamute Husky, Neeko every day.

How do you find balance between work, play and family?

Being my own boss gives me the greatest flexible opportunities to balance time for playing and family as most days I really like my boss!

Do you have advice for women wanting to start their own business?

Just do it! Take as many business accounting/management courses that you can to help you understand the aspects of operating a successful business and believe in yourself with confidence.

How is working in a small town different from a city?

I totally enjoy working in the small town of Fernie for the convenience of time, however, I have worked all over the Elk Valley; the saying “have paint brush - will travel” has taken my daughter and myself while we traveled South East Asia to volunteer painting in Thailand.

It depends on what business you are in. You have to be there and be dedicated, put the time in. I have worked really hard, finding the right staff is also key. Also, be consistent on your hours.

I never have worked in a city. Here in Fernie I find people go out of town to shop and look for different products, not even knowing I may have the same product here, so that may be a difference.

hen was your business established?

Crumbs was established in 2011 and officially open for public orders on March 15, 2012.

What is your job?

I have a few things going on…

I am the owner and operator of Crumbs Cakery. I design, bake and decorate custom wedding, birthday and special occasion cakes and cupcakes. I am a paramedic for B.C. Ambulance. I am also currently in school doing courses to obtain a higher license to provide a higher level of care in the Valley.

I own and operate Hooked on You. I make custom crochet creations such as hats, baby booties, infinity scarves, hooded cowls, mittens and more and I am the founder and president of the Sparwood Farmer’s Market Society.

How did you get into it?

I have been baking since I was a little girl. I love watching the chemical reactions of batters and doughs turn into something so pretty and delicious. When I got pregnant with my daughter in 2009, I craved cake constantly.

I just had to have cake all the time. That’s when I decided to try my hand at fondant and gum paste decorating. I wanted to be able to make my baby girl a beautiful princess castle

cake for her first birthday. I started practicing and I fell in love with the craft. I got many compliments - friends and family told me I should sell my stuff and make some extra cash.

I decided to start a Facebook page to pass word around and see how it went. The public response was humbling, to say the least.

What do you enjoy most about it?

Being in the kitchen making cakes really gave me a way to express myself and get back in touch with my creative side. This journey became a part of finding myself and the true self I lost years ago.

What are the challenges?

Keeping my website and bookwork up to date are difficult between everything else that I do. I end up having to set aside an entire day to spend especially on those things. I can’t justify the cost of out-sourcing at this point when I have the college education to do these things myself.

Do you feel there are still challenges being a woman in business?

Not at all. Being a woman in business has become ‘normal’ in today’s day and age as far as I’m concerned - especially in my line of work.

How do you continue to evolve your business?

I am always challenging myself and trying new techniques to keep up with the trends. I keep up on many social media sites to keep an eye on what’s new and upcoming. I also like to offer new products to keep things fun and interesting - both for myself and my customers.

Do you plan to stay in this role?

You bet! I’m in this for the long haul. Like I said earlier, making cakes is how I express myself and stay in touch with my creative side. It’s a really good fit with my career as a paramedic so I don’t see anything changing any time soon.

How do you find balance between work, play and family?

Sometimes it can be difficult but because I run my own business, I have the luxury of choosing when I work and when I play.

Ambulance fits so well because it is based on availability. Essentially, I make my own schedule and choose when I want to work and when I want days off. I always make sure to make time for me, to do something to recharge my batteries. That’s most important.

If I’m not energized and healthy in both mind and body, what good am I to my children, family, friends, patients or customers?

Do you have advice for women wanting to

start their own business?

Don’t sit around and think about. Make a plan and get the ball rolling. You’re going to run into obstacles but that’s the most rewarding part. I found the biggest obstacles always seem to come right before the biggest rewards. If that’s not motivation to keep going, I don’t know what is. Moral of the story: don’t give up no matter how hard it seems. It will happen if you persevere.

How is working in a small town different from a city?

I can’t say from personal experience as I’ve only run my business and worked as a paramedic here in Sparwood.

Fernie Pizza & Pasta After relocating to Fernie from Vancouver eight years ago, Nina opened the valley’s newest pizza shop in October 2013.

Since then, she has been appreciating the support of the community as she balances her family life with her new business.

It was established in June 2012 after relocating to Elkford from Kitimat with my husband who was offered a position with Fording River What is your job?

I work as a massage therapist, not an RMT (Registered Massage Therapy). I also, along with my daughter-in-law Jolene Farina, do some of our spa treatments as well.

How did you get into it?

Health and wellness and beauty has always been a passion of mine, having a balance in your life where these elements are part of it is crucial to a full happy healthy life. I had been managing a health food store and we had a resident massage therapist. I was always amazed at how people looked and felt so much better after a massage treatment. I started to look into how I could become part of this world of massage therapy. Living in a remote, off the beaten path part of British Columbia made it extremely difficult to go to school, but with a supportive husband and family I was able to do a combination of school, one on one instruction, online, and workshop courses to complete my hours and schooling. Having many willing family and friends to practice on for free was a huge help; everyone wants a free massage. Since then I have attended many classes workshops and more online courses to always keep up to date with all the new and improved modalities that are offered, which in turn I can share with my clients.

What do you enjoy most about it?

I’d have to say the best part of my work is that I am always learning. The body is magnificent, and I feel blessed and

privilege to be able to work on people and see how massage therapy can change a person’s life.

What are the challenges?

I think the challenges are such that everyone is in a rush.

People find it hard to take time to replenish their bodies until they are hurting. Prevention is key to healthy balanced living but it is hard to convince a lot of people of that.

Do you think there are still challenges being a women in business?

Without sounding biased, I think working women in general have a challenge, whether it is their own business or working for an employer. They are the balance in the home and therefore it’s a challenge to keep it all going, and going well! But I also think this is why women in business are so successful. They can handle a multitude of tasks at one time while still challenging themselves to do better, encouraging others along the way to do the same, and continuing to create and hold a happy health home for herself and her family.

How do you find balance between work, play and family?

Balancing work, family and playtime can be a challenge for sure. I sometimes find myself folding towels at 11 at night and dreaming about what else Jolene and I can come up with to share with our clients. Thanks to my husband who is a huge help and support, he helps me to take a break, watch TV, and chill out as he puts it! Being with loved ones always puts the importance back into life and makes you realize the blessings you have around you.

Do you have advice for women wanting to start their own business?

My advice to women who are thinking about going into

business would be to make sure you have a solid support network, whether it be financial or physical, like family help, and then go for it. Yes, it is a challenge.

Yes you will have late nights. Yes you’ll wonder some days why.

But at the end of the day, you can sit back and look at what you have accomplished not only for yourself but for your family and the community around you. It’s a great feeling to know that you are providing a service that will help people in your community and that they no longer have to go out of town for. Also I would say make sure you do your best to support the businesses around you. Every little bit helps and makes a sustainable business environment in your community.

How is working in a small town different from a city?

I prefer working in a smaller community as opposed to a city, however small communites have their challenges, mostly because of volume. Many small community services have some of the best education, the best products and are usually the same or less in price, and are more likely to have better service as they have more time to provide a one on one experience for the client.

ello! For those who don’t know me, my name is Ann Zweerink and I am the current owner/operator of the Extra Foods in Fernie.

I started my retail journey with Loblaws 23 years ago. Within those 23 years, I have worked in three stores and have held a variety of positions. I was first hired on as a cashier and from there took on any and all roles that came my way. I also held positions in the cash office, deli, bakery, grocery supervisor, assistant store manager, just to name a few.

My journey changed when I decided to take the store manager position in Fernie and my ever-supportive husband quit his job so I could pursue mine. We relocated to Fernie in January 2003. The Extra Foods opened on March 18 of that year. I was then offered the position of owner/ operator in April 2006 and I accepted the position with honour.

I very much value the role I have within the company today. Although the position I currently hold provides many challenges, I look forward to coming to work and leading my team to provide the community of Fernie with a clean, well-stocked and friendly place to shop.

o we went to the movies.

If you happened to catch my column on our obsession with Lego, then you’d understand that when the Lego movie came out there was no missing it.

Not only was everyone talking about it at school, but I think Warner Pictures may have sponsored a commercial every 20 minutes advertising it. My girls were jumping up and down in front of the TV like they might actually be able to warp through the screen

and join their friends every time it came on. Well done marketing team, mission accomplished.

So when the big day arrived we headed down to the theatre, the girls vibrating with anticipation. Four has been to a couple of movies, but Three usually skips out. We’ve learned our lesson. If we tell her there is a slight possibility that something scary might be in it, she bails. Which is fine, better to bail at home than at the movie in the pitch black with Four wailing that she wants to stay and Three wailing that the scary monster is going to “kill her life.” Not sure where she got that one.

But this time she was adamant that she was going.

I figured it would probably be okay except for one problem – it was in 3D. Believe me, I totally get why all the kids movies are in 3D now. It’s really cool. But trying to keep big glasses perched on the face of a three year old as they constantly squirm and change seats and lick the lenses is a monumental task. When you add that to the already challenging juggling act of passing out

treats, keeping the seats from folding up on them, distributing the drinks without the lid continuously popping off, and keeping everyone relatively quiet, it can put you over the limit.

And of course this is all done in the dark. Parenting while blindfolded. Help.

All this said, the girls loved the movie. It did have a scary guy, who we’ve talked about incessantly since the second the movie ended. Given that his only real crime was trying to glue the pieces of Lego together, not kill anyone’s life, Three was okay.

To be honest, I could totally relate to the bad guy.

Dummies make their way downhill

S

now wasn't the only thing falling out of the sky during the Raging Elk Dummy Downhill at Fernie Alpine Resort. Animal creations on skis and snowboards were released down the slope to launch off a giant jump in hopes of achieving the biggest air. Dummies ranged in titanic proportions from a stealthy jet to the ghetto bicycle and Digger the rescue dog.

Dummies can be made from a variety of materials; creativity is stressed but they cannot weight more than 100 lbs. Judges based their decisions on construction, creativity, distance dummies fly off the jump and the carnage factor when they land.

All the funds raised with this fun event are donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
