Missing man’s remains identified

Barry Hinchcliffe was headed to his Mission property in 2011 Human remains found in Abbotsford on Feb. 16 on the banks of the Fraser River have been identified as a man who had been missing from Vancouver since September 2011. Barry Hinchcliffe, 44, left his home in the 900 block of Expo Boulevard in Vancouver at about 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2011. He was headed to a rural property he owned in Mission on Sylvester Road. He was reported missing by his family seven days later. Hinchcliffe had missed his daughter’s birthday and his own, and his behaviour was considered uncharacteristic. Police located his grey 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck at a Mission property, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the investigation on Oct. 1. A search was conducted of the property, which contained a large Quonset-hut structure, several small sheds and

Hinchcliffe’s cause of death and other information are not being released at this time. “We are fortunate to provide to a grieving family some closure with the remains of Barry being found, but our ultimate goal is to solve this homicide,” MacIntosh said.

The Abbotsford Hospice Society held its annual fundraising gala on Saturday at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre (36035 North Parallel Rd.). The Moments of Hope Gala raised funds toward Holmberg House, an adult hospice facility currently under construction as part of the Campus of Care project next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. A fundraising total from the event was not available by press time. The evening included a plated meal, a silent auction and live band. A 60-tonne section of crane fell off a semi-trailer on Monday night in Abbotsford, resulting in a clean-up operation that took several hours. The incident took place just before 11 p.m., when the truck was travelling south in a roundabout on Mt. Lehman Road, south of Fraser Highway. One of the tie-downs that was holding the crane in place snapped, resulting in a chain reaction that broke the other tie-downs. The section crashed to the ground and was damaged. A large crane had to be brought in to lift the section on to a flatbed truck. No other vehicles were damaged in incident, and no one was injured.

Other Hand My first reaction a few weeks back, when reading about a court ruling that determined “designated drivers” are not covered with liability insurance, was “well there goes Operation Red Nose.” And sure enough, when I got to the turn page of the story there was a sidebar (journalese for another story) that said ORN’s future was now up in the air. As one who has been an ORN volunteer on a number of occasions, I can’t say I ever witnessed an unruly drunk in the groups we shepherded home. However, after a couple of Christmas/ New Year’s seasons I opted not to drive the drunks’ cars but to operate the fol-
low vehicle to provide a ride back for the volunteers. Everyone who has worked the very late nights always felt good knowing they may have saved a life or two. And that is why programs like ORN are good, should be supported, and those who volunteer to help others must be protected by the very organization that they are also protecting – ICBC. Even the judge who recently ruled against compensation for the young woman severely injured when her drunk boyfriend grabbed the wheel, crashing the car, described his determination of liability as “a powerful disincentive to anyone acting as a designated driver ...” Even government-sponsored (and likely paid for by ICBC) television commercials extol the virtues of being a Saturday night hero, taking your turn to drive friends home from a night of partying. Yet thanks to this ruling, caused I
might point out, by ICBC itself by refusing to pay compensation to the injured woman who apparently can no longer work, designated drivers are not only giving up a fun evening but any rights to protection should an accident occur. If that’s not addle-headed I don’t know what is.
After all, the designated driver is not only getting drunks home safely, he/she is also making the roads safer for everyone else. ICBC and any other insurer should be going out of their way to encourage designated drivers, and make it even more appealing by providing extra protection.

After all, the DD is not only getting drunks home safely, he/she is also making the roads safer for everyone else. I find it a contradiction that while ICBC fights compensation for a designated driver, it is also a partner of Operation Red Nose. This court ruling, and I’m not faulting the judge who appears to have followed the rules of law, must be appealed. And though an anomaly it may appear to be, I believe ICBC should fund that appeal, then plead no contest. After all, getting drunks off the road is a significant aim of not only our provincial insurer but the government itself. Our roads become safer, and innocent lives are saved, because either friends or volunteer groups like Operation Red Nose are literally risking their lives or their futures to protect others. I read with concern the vitriolic Feb. 26 letter written by Steve Timm; “A shill to business association.� Mayor Bruce Banman took the brunt of his attack. Anyone who is willing to run and serve in political office deserves our thanks and respect whether we agree with their position or not. We do have a problem with our homeless. Is not the result much of their own doing? Do not many of them refuse help because there are certain rules to follow? I tend to agree with the business association. They spent a great deal of money up-front to rejuvenate the downtown area.
If a low-barrier housing complex is built in the business area, where will the people with addictions get money for drugs? Me thinks that the businesses in the area would see even more inventory shrinkage than they do now. Will not many of the potential customers avoid an area where the tenants of a housing project  are not held accountable? Would not the old hospital site be a suitable location for a housing project of this type, but with rules? My understanding is that drug-addicted individuals are considered not responsible for their actions and are often unable to look after

To be humble and accepting of real change to deal with real life problems is what we should expect from those who want to represent us, in any form of government. Five Black Press newspapers and reporters have been honoured with this year’s Jumpstart Awards, making up nearly half of the contest’s 12 winners. A high-risk sex offender well known in Abbotsford has been charged with three new offences. Jeffrey Goddard has been charged with fraud, use of a forged document and impersonation in relation to a Surrey RCMP investigation from November 2013. Goddard lived in Abbotsford most of his life, but moved to Surrey after being released from prison in January 2013 after serving a 180day term for breaching his probation. In 2011, he was convicted of invitation to sexual touching, communicating via a computer to lure a child, impersonating a police officer and two charges of breaching his bail conditions. He was sentenced to 20 months in prison and was released in February 2012, residing in Abbotsford. He breached his probation that summer when he again adopted an alias on Facebook – this time posing as a landscaper – and hired two teen boys to do yardwork, resulting in the 180-day sentence. Last November, Surrey RCMP issued a notice that Goddard was wanted for again breaching his probation. His most recent charges related to him allegedly attempting to buy a piece of equipment used in landscaping.

Trucker chronicles adventures Doug Firth has book published
An Abbotsford man has chronicled his experiences on the road as a trucker. B.D. (Doug) Firth has authored the book “Here to There on 18 Wheels (Mostly): A Collection of Trucking Tales,” published by Friesen Press of Victoria. Over the years, Firth has been a wrestler, logger, race car driver, salesman, bouncer and a trucker, but his first love has always been trucking. His book captures the best of his travels and mishaps during the years he spent 18-wheeling it through the snow, ice and mud and even a little sunshine while he hauled everything from gold bars to pre-fab houses through five states, two provinces and a couple of territories. Firth details his adventures with mad-moose encounters, impromptu engineering repairs and close calls with icy roads. One chapter is in honour of a now-deceased trucker. All the stories in the collection are actual events, although Firth admits he may have forgotten a name or two. Firth wrote his collection of trucking tales aboard his wheelchair at Worthington Pavilion in Abbotsford, where he resides. His bent for writing may be inherited from his 98-year-old mother, Marie Firth, a pub-

Writing panel offers tips ‘Writing for a Living’ event on March 12 Five writers from the Fraser Valley chapter of the Professional Writers Association of Canada (PWAC) will visit University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in Abbotsford on March 12 for a presentation called Writing for a Living. They will share their experiences with students, graduates and others interested in writing careers. The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in rooms A225/229. The writing panel features Janet Love Morrison, Ronda Payne, Lynda Grace Philippsen, Kathleen Rake and Heidi Turner. They will answer participants’ questions and network “speed dating-style” with writers who are starting out.

DEVELOPMENT OF A PEST MANAGEMENT PLAN # 701-002-14/19 Metro Vancouver has prepared a draft Pest Management Plan (PMP) for the purpose of controlling the larval stage of nuisance mosquito species that significantly impact quality of life in limited parts of the region. Proposed treatment areas are: Metro Vancouver owned and/or managed lands and facilities; non-private lands within the City of Coquitlam, the District of Maple Ridge, the City of Pitt Meadows, the City of Surrey, and non-private and some private lands in the Township of Langley. Application of larvicide will occur annually between April and September in artificial waterbodies, standing water and areas prone to flooding. The PMP would be in effect for a five year period. Products that may be used include: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) – VectoBac – PCP# 18158 Bacillus sphaericus (Bsph) – VectoLex – PCP# 28008 These products are registered for use in Canada, are target specific, non-residual and non-toxic. Chemical control of adult mosquitoes is expressly excluded. Manner of application will be by hand, backpack blower, truck-mounted sprayer or all terrain vehicle- mounted blower and helicopter. The Abbotsford Arts Council’s next show begins March 7 at the Kariton Art Gallery (2387 Ware St.). “Inceptions” showcases artwork by students graduating from the University of the Fraser Valley in 2014 with a diploma in visual arts. The exhibition highlights the different disciplines students would use during the completion of this two-year diploma. Works will range from printmaking and installation to painting and sculpture. Some students have taken on the extra challenge of producing new work specifically for this exhibition and reinvestigating their previous work. Seven artists will be featured: Ashley Bulthuis, Jessica Koplar, Julie Epp, Kaitlyn Ross, Lisa Edwards, Michelle Auton and Tasha Hinterbrandner. Daffodil Month volunteers needed
The Canadian Cancer Society is seeking volunteers for its annual Daffodil Month in April. The society has an urgent need for more volunteers to sell the daffodil pin. These volunteers will work in communities across B.C. during April to remind people to buy and wear a pin to show support for those fighting cancer. “The daffodil pin is a bright and hopeful emblem that says we’re all in this together and we won’t give up until all forms of the disease are defeated,” said Margaret Jones-Bricker, director of the Canadian Cancer Society, northern region.

After the Abbotsford Senior Panthers secured the Fraser Valley AAA boys basketball championship on Saturday, head coach Prentice Lenz pointed out to his players that the program hadn’t won a Valley title since 1998. That prompted Grade 10 centre Chase Claypool to pipe up. “He said, ‘That was the year I saw born,’” Lenz recounted. “We had a good chuckle over that.

Q The inaugural AAAA boys provincial tournament will not feature any Abbotsford content. The W.J. Mouat Hawks, MEI Eagles and Yale Lions made deep runs in the double-knockout Valley tourney, but all three fell just short. The Hawks came the closest, losing a do-ordie game vs. the Sardis Falcons 96-82 on Friday which would have earned them one of the region’s six provincial berths. The Eagles and Lions had been eliminated one day earlier. MEI made it through to the quarterfinals unscathed, but dropped a 93-55 decision to defending AAA champ Walnut Grove and then fell 80-76 to

For the fourth straight year, the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team is off to the Canada West Final Four. The Cascades punched their ticket in emphatic fashion last week, sweeping their best-of-three firstround playoff series vs. the Calgary Dinos at the Envision Athletic Centre. On Thursday, UFV smothered the Dinos 67-48, holding the visitors to 18.5 per cent shooting in the first half en route to the blowout. On Friday, Calgary offered a stiffer test, but the Cascades broke the game open with an 11-2 run in the third quarter and won 60-48. “It didn’t look fantastic, but I thought they (the Dinos) really competed hard tonight, really came at us,” head coach Al Tuchscherer said after Friday’s win. “Once we made a couple of adjustments defensively, I thought we were pretty good. “We tend to grind teams down a little bit, and that run happened in the third quarter.” Nataliia Gavryliuk, a first-year Cascade from Kiev, Ukraine, was the offensive leader both nights. She racked up a game-high 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists on Thursday, and followed that up by hitting 6-of-9 three-point attempts on Friday on her way to 18 points, also a game high. Nearly 7,000 screaming middle school students gave the Abbotsford Heat a jolt of early energy during a rare morning game, but the Texas Stars weathered a strong start by the hosts and won 3-1. The defeat extended Abbotsford’s losing streak to a season-high five games, and they fell four points back of the Stars for first place in both the West Division and Western Conference standings. Despite the result, the Heat were pleased with elements of their performance – they allowed very little by way of scoring chances to the topscoring team in the Western Conference. The Heat’s own offence, though, wasn’t able to generate much. The 6,827 youngsters in attendance brought great enthusiasm. The men’s basketball Final Four tourney ran this past weekend, also in Edmonton, and UFV fell just shy of a national tourney berth. Facing the Victoria Vikes in Friday’s semis with a guaranteed nationals ticket on the line, the Cascades’ collective shooting touch deserted them – they went 1-of-25 from three-point range in a 77-57 loss. They shot the ball only marginally better in Saturday’s bronze medal game, going 6-of-29 from beyond the arc in a 79-70 defeat to the Saskatchewan Huskies. “By and large, I was happy with how we played and the shots we were getting,” head coach Adam Friesen said. “We just happened to have a couple bad shooting nights in a row, and it hurt us.” Saskatchewan ended up securing a wildcard berth to nationals – a berth which the Cascades, ranked No. 8 in the nation, would have had a great shot at had they been able to beat the Huskies. Friesen rightly termed it an “incredibly successful” season. The Cascades began the year ranked 11th of 16 teams in the Canada West coaches’ poll, but won a program-record 16 straight games and made the Final Four for the third straight year.

Menno Peter Isaac, husband of Rosa Isaac, and deceased wife, Kay Isaac went to be with his Lord at the Cottage Pavilion Care Home in Abbotsford, BC on February 25, 2014. He was born October 31, 1927. He accepted the Lord as a young teen and was baptized the same year. Menno was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is remembered for his hard work ethics, love and hospitality for his family and many friends, and in particular his first wife, Kay and greatgrandson James “Nugget” Williams. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosa Isaac, children: Daryl (Kris) Isaac, Rod (Carol) Isaac, 4 grandchildren and their spouses: Jeremy (Megan) Isaac, Alanna (Adam) Kemp, Sherilyn (Richard) Williams and Robert Isaac, 3 great-grandchildren: Katie J. Williams, Gavin and Wesley Kemp, brothers and spouses: Walter (Betty) Isaac, Abe Isaac, Aron (Elvera) Isaac, Henry (Vera) Isaac and Eleanor (Ed) Thiessen, his cousins and in particular those he and Rosa met for monthly breakfasts, nieces, nephews and extended family through Rosa. A viewing will be held from 3:00 5:00 pm Sunday, March 9, 2014 at the Clearbrook M.B. Church, Abbotsford, BC. A burial at Greendale Cemeteries in Sardis, BC will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Clearbrook M.B. Church, 2719 Clearbrook Rd, at 11:00 am officiated by Pastor Walter Wiens , with a light luncheon to follow at the church. With his family at his side, Al passed away peacefully on February 22nd in Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Al was predeceased by parents Sandor and Marie, and brother Daniel Toth. He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Kay and children Gary (Juanita), Mandy, Steve (Barb), Brian (Regina); grandchildren Riley, Ben, Owen, Soren, Cameron, Kendra, Nicole, Karl, and niece Wendy, nephew Ken and sister-in-law Nancy, and other extended family. Born in Toronto, raised in Surrey, Al settled in Abbotsford with wife Kay where they raised their four children and resided for 52 years, before relocating to Parksville. Al was a career meat cutter (UFCW member), a dedicated father and provider, and a lifelong outdoorsman. He was an active supporter of minor hockey and softball. His passion for nature was engrained in his children at a young age through regular fishing, camping, hunting and hiking trips that everyone was included in. Dad, you will be in our thoughts and hearts forever. You’ve left an enduring legacy. Look for me when the tide is high, And the gulls are wheeling overhead. I am there, where the river flows, and salmon leap to a silver moon. Where the insects hum, and the tall grass grows, and the sunlight warms the afternoon. A burial at Greendale Cemeteries in Sardis, BC will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Clearbrook M.B. William Samuel Ritchie
February 25, 1927 - February 9, 2014 Our beloved father, Bill Ritchie, left us to meet his Saviour on Sunday, February 9, 2014. Dad was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the third of six children. He was predeceased by his parents, four sisters, younger brother, his first wife and mother of his four children, Francis Maud Kathleen, and oldest son, Gordon. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 24 years, Nina; daughter, Laurna; sons, Stewart (Sandra), Scott (Tracey); grandchildren, Ryan, Brock, Matthew (Hayley), Dean, Samantha, Amelia, Tyler, Liam, Cameron, Brittany, Justin and Alexandra; great-grand-daughters: Sophie, Sadie and Reece; as well as Nina’s daughters, Bonnie and her children and Lori (Doug). Dad lived through World War II in a city overwhelmed by enemy bombing, as Glasgow was a shipbuilding city. The horrors he witnessed motivated him to lie about his age and join the British Royal Navy. Dad has never been afraid of hard work and was determined to make a better life for himself and his family. His entrepreneurial nature began when he would dismantle wooden boxes into smaller pieces. He sold this kindling door-to-door, giving his mother most of his earnings to help with family expenses. Farming has always been one of Dad’s biggest passions. He started farming in Scotland and, having had many wonderful memories as a child visiting his aunt in Ireland, he shipped his loved horses and farm implements to County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. He met our mother when he went to the government office to apply for his visa. Together they bought a fifty-acre farm. It was hard work and they soon had a child (Laurna) to provide for. Dad always yearned to go to a country where hard work and determination was part of an entrepreneurial culture. With a flip of a coin it was determined that they would emigrate to Canada. In 1952 Dad, Mom and Laurna left aboard the ship the “Empress of Canada” and settled in Winnipeg where their first son, Gordon, was born. Their life was filled with love and determination. Dad held numerous jobs over the years all in agriculture except for a short time as a real estate agent. His career took him back and forth between Manitoba and British Columbia. Their two younger sons, Stewart and Scott, were born in Vancouver while Dad was General Sales Manager of Buckerfields. Dad’s many work experiences taught him that people will work hard if they are valued and appreciated. To this end, Dad and Dave Smith formed “Ritchie-Smith Feeds Ltd.” and, between them, they gave their all to treating each other, as well as staff and customers alike with respect and dignity. It was in 1968 that for the third time our family would live in Abbotsford and we have ever since. Dad strongly believed in community service and was a proud member of the Abbotsford Rotary Club where he served as the club president. As the company grew and became successful, it was in a position to support many organizations here in the Fraser Valley and elsewhere in the world. A legacy that our family is very proud of. After selling Ritchie-Smith Feeds, Dad entered politics with the same determination and philosophy: that people who are treated with respect excel. He went on to become our MLA for two terms. He was Minister of Municipal Affairs for his last term. In 1986 Dad retired from public life and truly ‘retired’ in every sense of the word. He met and married, Nina, and between them they explored North America and Mexico in their motor home as well as cruised the waters off Vancouver Island in their motor yacht. Eventually they settled in Qualicum Beach where they resided until Dad’s passing. A Celebration of Dad’s Life will take place Saturday, March 8, at 1pm at Mountain Park Community Church, 36228 Lower Sumas Mountain Road, Abbotsford, BC.
