Ten things I’ve learned over the years In the middle of my life I changed careers and immersed myself in helping seniors find appropriate housing for their needs. Here Sharon Simpson is what I’ve learned since I started spending a lot of time with people over 80 years of age: 1. My life is enriched. My life is better when I’m around people in their elder years. It comes from hearing life perspectives from people who are closer to the finish line. Things matter less.

People matter more. Life is more precious. Laughter is even more enjoyable. Time is valuable. Pleasures are relished. Friendships are gentler. Spiritual life is important.

2. Seniors still feel young inside.

When I ask people how old they feel inside, it never stops amazing me that everyone says a number between 18 and 25 years old. There’s something truly timeless about our person. From the time that we reached adulthood, we continue to feel the same inside. It’s our bodies that are taking the toll of aging, not our souls.

3. Money can’t solve everything.

When we are younger, money seems like a real answer to our problems.

With money, you can get a rest (vacation), a break (housekeeper), or a pick-me-up (spa). But there comes a time in life when you can throw all the

I am filled with admiration for those who found themselves in these difficult circumstances and have made their way into contentment and joy in spite of the hardships. I have much to learn from their stories.

9. Support is essential but not always easy. When the transitions and losses of aging are fast and furious, support is essential. This is very difficult for the self-made seniors who created thriving lives out of poverty and opportunity. Our elder generation is not used to needing support from others.

I’m always very encouraged when I see seniors caring for each other and trusting the next generation(s) to share their load as well. More than ever before in their lives, seniors need support.

10. I have what it takes to bridge the generation gap. So do you. How can we form friendships between generations? Will I know what to say when an elder tells me of the great challenges they faced in their life? Will I be able to slow down and listen well to the story of their life? What does it take to be a friend to an elder? An authentic heart, a smile, a hug, a genuine word of encouragement, a prayer.

Small gestures from a pure heart are the key to forging friendship across the generations.

Memory loss is not an automatic side effect of aging

Staying socially active after 50 can benefit the brain and even reduce a person’s risk of dementia.

No one, regardless of age, is immune to random bouts of memory loss. While misplaced car keys or forgetting items on your grocery list are nothing to get worked up over, many men and women over 50 do start to worry about memory lapses, especially when they start to occur with more frequency than they might have just a few years ago. But while memory loss might be quickly associated with aging, increased forgetfulness is not an inevitable side effect of getting older, a fact that those at or approaching retirement age should find comforting.

When considering the relationship between memory and aging, it’s important that men and women recognize the distinction between memory lapses and dementia, as the two are not one and the same. As a person ages, his or her hippocampus, the region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, often deteriorates. Financial considerations for those nearing retirement Retirement can simultaneously excite and distress men and women as they approach the day when they end their careers. Anticipating the freedom can be exciting, while concerns about maintaining financial independence can be stressful.

Though there are no guarantees that men and women who prioritize retirement planning will not outlive their finances, those who do arrange their priorities in such a manner are far more likely to enjoy a comfortable retirement without worrying about their finances. As men and women approach retirement age, certain steps with regard to preparing for retirement can put them in position to enjoy their golden years to the fullest.

Q Assess your resources.

An honest assessment of your assets will help you determine a retirement lifestyle you can afford.

Assets can include any property you own, investments, savings, and retirement accounts.

Your property may be your biggest financial asset, but unless you plan to sell that property or take out a reverse mortgage, then you won't be able to rely on that property to fund your lifestyle. When assessing resources, keep in mind that you might have to pay potentially steep taxes when attempting to access any retirement accounts, such as RRSPs. Factor in any such taxes when assessing your retirement resources.

did a great job planning for retirement. If they are slightly or significantly different, then look for ways to close that gap. If necessary, consult with a financial planner, who might be able to help turn your dream retirement into a reality. Closing the gap between your dream retirement and the one you can afford to live may require you to work an extra year or two, so be prepared to make that decision if need be.

Q Plan on continuing to grow your money. Just because you're retiring does not mean your money has to stop working as well. You will still need to combat inflation during your golden years, so plan on continuing to grow your money even after you retire. Though it's best to reduce investment risks as you age, many retirees still need to keep a toe in the investment waters. Find a balance you're comfortable with so your money continues to grow, but be conservative at the same time. As you grow older, continue to reduce your risk. While conventional wisdom long suggested retirees should completely eliminate risk from their portfolios, today's retirees are living longer than ever before, so you likely can't afford to follow the advice of yesteryear.

As retirement draws closer, men and women must start making important financial decisions to ensure their nest eggs can support the lifestyles they want to live throughout their golden years.

Your eyes can tell doctors about your health People who have been putting off eye examinations may want to call their opthalmologists to schedule an appointment. That’s because vision checkups can do more than protect your eyes. By examining the eyes, doctors may have a window into health problems affecting other areas of the body.

Researchers recently discovered a link between detected retinal amyloid plaques and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. While evidence was found in lab mice, autopsies of at least eight Alzheimer’s disease patients have also shown amyloid plaques, which are known to interfere with memory and

other mental functions, present in the retinas.

Dementia is not the only thing that doctors may be able to detect through an eye exam. Jaundice in the whites of the eyes may indicate liver disease, and early warning signs of diabetes may be detectable in the eyes. Eyes are the only place where doctors can see veins, arteries and nerves without surgery, and eye examinations are increasingly being relied on to gauge overall health.

The following are a few additional conditions that may be detected through the eyes.

Allergies. Patients may be referred to

an allergy specialist if they exhibit dark under-eye circles. While this can be a sign of aging, dark circles, sometimes referred to as “allergic shiners,” also may indicate certain allergies.

When clogged sinuses cause a blockage of blood flow in the nasal passages around the eye, darkness may result.

This symptom in conjunction with persistent nasal congestion could be a sure sign of allergies.

High cholesterol. The presence of bumpy, yellowish patches on the eyelid, known as xanthelasma palpebra, is a warning sign of high cholesterol, which is often initially diagnosed during a routine eye exam.

Cancer. Some cancer metastases can be detected during an eye exam. The presence of a bump or brown spot on the eyelid also may be indicative of skin cancer. Many malignant eyelid tumors are basal-cell carcinoma. If the spot is brown, it’s more likely to be malignant melanoma.

Thyroid issues. When the outer onethird of the brow (the part closest to the ear) begins to disappear on its own, this is a common sign of thyroid disease. The thyroid helps regulate metabolism, and thyroid hormones are essential to hair production. Hair loss may occur elsewhere, but is much more visible in the brows.

Clogged arteries. Blockages in the smaller veins in the retina may indicate clogs caused by arterial plaque.

This will show up as a retinal occlusion in a visual exam. If blood vessels in the eyes are blocked, clogged arteries may be present elsewhere in the body, so a cardiology workup may be ordered.

Bell’s palsy. The inability to close one eye or to control tear production in that eye may be a sign of Bell’s palsy.

This is a condition of the nervous system that controls facial muscles, causing temporary paralysis in one side of the face. Sometimes Bell’s palsy follows a viral or bacterial infection.

Finding a reliable pet sitter You’ve booked your next vacation or trip to visit family living far away, and have made all of the arrangements necessary. Except for who will watch your pet.

Millions of people across North America are pet owners. Although hotels and restaurants are increasingly amenable to pets, a good number of people prefer the convenience of leaving their pet home. Pets also seem to thrive in their familiar home environments. Keeping a pet home will require the services of a pet sitter to care for the animal.

At one time pet owners had limited options when it came time to arrange care for their animals while they were away. The choices were between asking a friend or family member to take on the task or dropping the pet off at a nearby kennel. Today, however, trained professionals are available to watch your pets, some of whom will even come directly to the house. Hiring a pet sitter is nothing to take lightly, as it requires finding reputable sitters who are thoroughly vetted.

When the time comes to hire a pet sitter, you want to ensure the person is trained and professional. After all, this person will be coming into your home and caring for your pet. Develop a series of questions you want answered, including a list of references, proof of bonding and insurance coverage, and fees. You also want to ensure that the pet and the sitter will get along together.

If you don’t know where to begin the search,

you can hire a National Association of Professional Pet Sitters pet sitter. These individuals have been trained in various pet sitting scenarios and should prove more than capable.

Once you choose a sitter, there are ways to make the experience easier for all involved.

Q Make a list of the things your pet enjoys and does not enjoy.

Q List any food allergies or problems with the animal.

Q Provide recent veterinarian check-up information and a basic health history.

Q Establish rules for the home. Set up the home for the arrival of the sitter, including leaving out any necessary supplies for the pet.

Q Clean up the house to prevent any hazards to the pet, including unplugging wires from outlets, and closing doors to rooms that are off-limits.

Q Leave a radio on to simulate comforting noises in the house and keep the pet calm.

Q Be sure the garbage is empty so that curious pets don’t get inside and eat something they shouldn’t.

The most important thing is the connection you have with the pet sitter and how well you both communicate about the needs of the animal. If you feel comfortable with the person, this improves the chances of a positive pet sitting experience.

Cruising is the no-work vacation People who are looking for a laid-back and fuss-free vacation can turn to cruising.

Cruising remains popular and that popularity continues to grow. Data from the Cruise Line International Association, Inc. (CLIA) market profile survey for 2011 found that cruising ranks second as the most popular vacation behind land-based nonresort vacations. Almost 71 percent of the total vacation market has an interest in cruising. Among past cruisers, survey respondents said they will most likely take another cruise over the next three years.

CLIA research indicates that cruisers tend to be middle-aged, predominantly married couples with a median income of $97,000.

The higher household income may account for the ability to cruise amid a floundering economy.

Travelers who are not interested in planning a day-to-day itinerary to keep busy often like the amenities of cruising. Most cruises have a cruise director who leads guests in various activities during the day.

Most modern-day cruise ships offer ample entertainment options. From swimming pools to skating rinks to rock walls to surfing simulators, there are activities for most age groups. For an additional cost, cruisers can leave the ship and go on specialized excursions at ports of call. Still, cruisers who just want to sit on deck and relax can do just that.

Cruising remains one of the most popular types of vacations. And since CLIA says that many people still book cruise vacations through a travel agent, cruising may be one of the easiest vacations to plan and enjoy.
