Welcome to the 2014 Readers Choice Awards The results of our second annual Readers Choice survey are in.

You’ve taken us on a virtual tour of Cranbrook and Kimberley, highlighting your fa-

vourite people, places and moments. Some of the results were surprising, some were expected, some were … well, read on, and see for yourselves.

We have also excerpted some of the results, providing details about some of the people, places and things that have stood out in the survey. Hundreds

of readers of the Cranbrook Daily Townsman, Kimberley Daily Bulletin and Kootenay Advertiser participated, revealing the depth of experiences one can

have in Cranbrook and Kimberley.

The categories range through all manner of businesses, restaurants, services, entertainment cen-

tres, places and people. You put forward your picks for most beloved citizen, your favourite City Councillor, your favourite bartender, your pre-

ferred driving range, what you think is the best place for a first date — all aspects of Cranbrook that make us who we are.

Most beloved citizens: Three who’ve made a difference Readers were asked to choose Cranbrook’s most beloved citizen, and as we can see, these are individuals who see themselves as inseparable from the community they love.

Bud Abbott took top spot in this category.

Since Bud arrived in Cranbrook some 50 years ago, he has come to be regarded as one of our most prominent and respected citizens.

Bud was among those who spearheaded the drive to save the old Masonic Hall in Cranbrook from destruction — this legacy is with us in the form of the Studio Stage Door and a vibrant local theatrical

community, among whose population of actors Bud is first among equals.

There’s a lot more to Bud than just acting.

He has been a strong voice for community improvement and the betterment of the lives of its residents through his involvement in a number of organizations: the East Kootenay Mental Health Association, Meals on Wheels, the Cranbrook Rotary Club, to name but a few, as well as his personal initiatives — many of these on behalf of seniors.

Bud was named Cranbrook’s Citizen of the Year for 1992.

Ken Bridge

Last year, Cranbrook mourned the passage of Ruby Sinclair, who despite her absence is with us in our hearts. Readers chose Ruby as a close second for Cranbrook most beloved citizen.

Sinclair’s love of Cranbrook led her to become one of Cran-

brook’s most recognized volunteers, and one of the most well known and respected people in the community.

Everyone who knew Ruby saw how she demonstrated her love for community with her actions. There was never a more dedicated volunteer.

She arrived in Cranbrook with her family in 1961, and immediately set about making it a better place. Ruby worked as school secretary at T.M. Roberts Elementary and then at Laurie Jr. Secondary (now Laurie Middle School). She retired in 1983, and assumed her

career as a volunteer — at Fort Steele Heritage Town, the Key City Theatre, the Cranbrook Visitors’ Booth, the Hospital Auxiliary.

Sinclair was named Cranbrook’s Woman of the Year by the Canadian Federation of University Women in 2001, and Volunteer of the Year by Volunteer Kootenays in 2008.

Bronze medal citizen Ken Bridge has devoted a wealth of time and effort to making Cranbrook a better community to live in.

Ken is best known for his successful business, Bridge Interiors, but it is his contributions to local charity events that

have earned him a spot in many the beloved citizens category.

Ken has helped with numerous local fundraisers over the years, such as the Children’s Christmas Party, the Cranbrook Dodge Charity Golf Tournament, the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life, the Walk for M.S., the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser for the Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre, and a celebrity boxing event which raised more than $22,000.

Ken was the recipient of the District Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award for 2013.

Whichever yoga studio you choose, you can be assured that you’ll be on your way to attaining a better sense of well-being and flexibility that comes along with the practice.

The Readers’ Choice Awards for Gold goes to Exhale Yoga Studio. The studio is well established in Cranbrook having set its roots back in 2006 when Brenda Cartier started it. It offers classes in many forms of yoga and a welcoming environment to bring balance to your body and mind. Classes range from Vinyasa Flow to Therapeutic and Qi Gong.

The award for silver goes to One Love Hot Yoga, which has been around since last fall when three local yoga practitioners and teachers started the studio.

We in the East Kootenay are proudly political, happily opinionated, engaged and activitistic. So when we inquired after who our favourite politicians are, our readers waded into the fray with sharpened pencils.

Choices for favourite local politician crossed jurisdictional boundaries.

Once again, Bill Bennett polled first. The two-time President of the Cranbrook and District Chamber, fourterm MLA for Kootenay East, and Cabinet minister with several portfolios in his time, this colourful politician is a populist indeed.

Wayne Stetski, Mayor of Cranbrook also followed up last year’s success with a silver again.

Stetski always makes himself and his ideas accessible to Council and to the public, and always has a smile for everyone.

In third spot for favourite local politician was Angus Davis, the longest serving of the current Cranbrook City Council. Angus is known for his storytelling and common touch, as well as his strong advocacy for seniors’ issues.

In terms of Council, we also invited readers to vote for their favourite City Councillors.

Denise Pallesen topped the list once again.

The two-term Cranbrook Councillor and owner of Nutter’s Bulk and Health Foods has been a strong advocate for downtown Cranbrook, for small business and for women in business.

Cranbrook Councillor Angus Davis took the silver, moving up a spot in the favourites category from last year.

Councillor Sharon Cross took bronze. Sharon is a business woman, teacher and community leader as well as a councillor.

When it comes to humming a tune, it seems those in the East Kootenay are not shy, especially with the wealth of musical talent that seems to strum up from this region. So when it came time to ask which musical act should be top of the Readers’ Choice list, it was no easy feat to come by the top picks.

But a top pick there had to be and with all of 2013’s media coverage, it should come as no surprise that the gold award goes to local band the Good Ol’ Goats.

The Good Ol’ Goats came from humble beginnings when two friends decided to experiment in folk music, which quickly attracted other talent to the mix and soon the band was off and running. It was the CBC Searchlight contest that really brought the Goats to the forefront, as it came down to a close second with Newfoundland band Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case in the national contest that began with almost 3,000 artists. The Goats were also featured on the CBC Beetle Roadtrip Sessions hosted by Grant Lawrence. The Goats are made up of Nolan Ackert on lead vocals, banjo and guitar; Angus Liedtke on guitar, banjo, harmonica and vocals; Theo Moore on standup bass and

backing vocals; Angus MacDonald on mandolin, backing vocals and fiddle; Joelle Winkel on mandolin and backing vocals; Julian Bueckert on drums; and Danica Martin on piano and trumpet.

The Readers’ Choice for Silver was non other than Dean Brody.

Dean grew up in Jaffray and recently played a show in Cranbrook to a packed house. Dean grew up working in a sawmill and playing guitar in his spare time. Then in 2004 he moved to Nashville to start a songwriting career. Since then he’s released a number of albums including the recent 2013 release Crop Circles. His single Bounty made the number one spot on the peak chart position in Canada.

Dean also won the Male Artist of the Year Award at the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, while being nominated for five other awards.

Readers chose Jason Scott as the bronze choice. Jason is an awardwinning Neil Diamond tribute artist. Jason attended the Toronto Conservatory of Music at the age of five and achieved first-degree honours at the age of fifteen. When he reached his 30s he was a recording artist, as well as writer and performer. He lives in Cranbrook.

The readers have spoken and when it comes to the 2014 Readers’ Choice Award for Sports Coaches this year the choices are no surprise. The Gold Medal award goes to Kootenay Ice Head Coach Ryan McGill, while the Silver goes to Dave Chisholm, Cranbrook Triton Swim Club head coach, and Bronze to Paul Mrazek, Rockie Mountain Bandits head coach.

Head Coach Ryan McGill took the Kootenay Ice to its 15th consecutive playoff berth in the 2012-2013 season, despite being in last place at Christmas time.

McGill is currently in his second stint as Ice head coach. He coached the Ice from 1999 up until

Dave Chisholm is the coach of the Cranbrook Tritons Swim Club and took the silver for the Readers’ Choice Award.

Chisholm has had a big impact swam on the Triton swimmers. In November Swimmers took to the Calgary Sea Lions Winter Cup Invitational and 70 per cent of the swims were personal bests for the swimmers under Chisholm’s coaching.

Paul Mrazek has spent the past four seasons with the Bandits as the pitching coach. In the 2006/07 seasons, Mrazek was the pitching coach for the Trail Jays.

In 2005/06, Mrazek was the Coach/Counselor at the Big League Experience Baseball Camp.

From 2003-2005, Mrazek was the Baseball BC Summer Head Coach. Mrazek played his last game for the Vancouver Jr. Pharaohs baseball team in 1987.

Readers’ Choose Corporate Citizen

The votes have been tallied for the Readers’ Choice Award for Corporate Citizen. So what is a good corporate citizen? It’s a business or person that adheres to a spirit of the law, strong ethical standard and looks out to the community beyond just the economic goals of the business.

Readers voted Ken Bridge, from Bridge Interiors, for the top spot.

Bridge has been an integral part of the fundraising community in the past year and was also voted as Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Citizen of the Year. Bridge has helped with numerous local fundraisers over the years including the Cranbrook Dodge Charity Golf Tournament, the Children’s Christmas Party and the Relay for Life, among many others. Most recently, a charity boxing match he was a part of raised over $22,000.

The award for silver goes to Jason Wheeldon, from Royal LePage East Kootenay Realty.

Wheeldon was named Chamber Citizen of the year in 2012. Wheeldon has been making a mark in the community for the past 20 years leading community projects, charitable events and sporting events.

Joey Hoechsmann, from Bedroom Furniture Galleries, took bronze for the award.

Hoechmann, along with his wife Chiristine own the business, which they took over from his parents. The store was started in 1977. Hoechsmann has said in the past that a good reputation in the community is important to his business.
