As well as working for the school system, Macfarlane is also active in the community.

He is a Tae Kwon Do Third Degree Black Belt Master and

founder of the Boundary Martial Arts Club, which started in the fall of 2007 and provides lessons free of charge two evenings per week.

Macfarlane is also active in 4-H and has a leadership role on the men’s hockey team.

Bunkhouse idea withdrawn

Kamloops businessman Carl Dried­ ger sent a letter to the Village of Midway withdrawing his proposal to develop a country market retail facility beside the Kettle River Museum.

“It’s time, it’s money, it’s distance,” he wrote in his letter aired at the village council meeting on Feb. 17. “You and Midway, I believe, have all the potential still and I am sorry I can no longer pur­ sue the project.”

Driedger had come to council last June with the proposal to rent the bunk­ house and bring in other structures with false-front facades to create a shopping village. His original proposal, which council turned down, would have seen the bunkhouse renovated by creating an opening in the walls between the bunk­ house rooms.

Driedger’s vision was to sell nutcrack­ ers, baskets, weathervanes and wind­ mills in a seasonal business—opening in May and running through until Christ­ mas. *** A reunion of BCSS grads stretching from 1969 to the present day is coming to Midway as a group of local residents was given approval for use of the arena and James McMynn Community Park from Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20.

Midway resident Tami Peters wrote to council on behalf of the group, saying that there has been much interest from the alumni.

The park will be used for camping and the arena, unless weather drives them indoors for their dinner, will only be used for restrooms and showers.

The reunion would coincide with Kettle River Day and JLB Memorial Run. The letter was seeking approval for use of the facilities and details about the cost.

Council approved the use of the fa­ cilities and directed staff to establish a set of rates for all events. *** Following up on a teleconference call that the village had with BC Emer­ gency Health Services representatives, the village is planning on advertising to let residents know that free training for ambulance attendants may be available if there is an interest. *** Last fall Grand Forks Community Fu­ tures Boundary (CFB) Assistant Manag­ er Sandy Elzinga came to council to offer a partnership between the village, Rotary Club and CFB that would install a WiFi hotspot in the village. The village has since heard of a pro­ gram from Shaw that installs WiFi in busi­ nesses that allows free access to Shaw customers who have installed the Shaw Go WiFi app.

Documents from Shaw claim there are already 3,000 locations set up with Shaw Go WiFi in central B.C. and the Kootenays and they are seeing upwards of 75 businesses per week joining in.

Back in the ’20s with prohibition in full stride, Big Al’s place was the hottest gin joint in town, with the rich and famous spending a lot of time and money dancing, playing cards and enjoying a glass of imported hootch. Everything was going smooth until New Year’s Eve 1929, when something happened that would change the future of all involved. Now, year’s later there is hardly anyone who knows what occurred that fateful night save for one lost soul who has all but gone mad. Long after the ghosts of the Speakeasy are locked in an uneasy state of limbo, all stuck waiting for something but not certain of what. The Speakeasy is an interesting look into an era that has few first-hand witnesses left.

Come and join us as we peer into the roaring ’20s and see just what life was like back then, with six original songs written for the production and a standard or two thrown in for good measure.

The Speakeasy will take the stage April 11 and 12 at Bridesville Hall for a din­ ner theater spectacular.

Greenwood wins bronze for water

Greenwood finished on the podium at the 24th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting in West Virginia over the weekend.

In fact, two of the best tasting tap waters in the world are from British Columbia, with Clearwater taking their third gold medal and Greenwood taking bronze.

All but one of the six top rated municipal waters had won at Berkeley Springs before.

“The consistency in winners from year to year with different panels of judges validates the choices,” remarked perennial watermaster Arthur von Weisenberger. “It also speaks to the impressively high caliber of the waters entered.”

According to a media release prepared by event sponsor Travel Berkeley Springs, 10 media judges spent hours tasting and selecting from nearly 100 waters entered.

Facts veiled Greenwood councillor Barry Noll was removed as the city’s representative at the regional district last week. Mayor Nipper Kettle and the other three council members (Noll wasn’t at the meeting) voted unanimously to strip him of the job.

No one will say much in public. What little can be gleaned from what has been released is that Noll stands accused of a failure to keep a confidence about something that had been discussed at an in camera meeting.

The latest public salvo in this little war came from Noll, who informed council on Monday night that he will no longer be attending in camera meetings unless he can bring along his attorney.

It is unfortunate that the voters can’t lift the veil on this squabble and see what did or didn’t happen.

Because the way it is going down now very few facts are out in the public record. What little information that has been let out is just enough to smear a member of council as we gear up for another election this November.

But then again, maybe council was justified in their vote to remove Noll from his seat. If that is the case then the ‘smear job’ statement above probably crosses the line—because it infers that the four council members who voted Noll out of the position might have done something wrong.

The problem with all of this happening incamera is that it leaves the voters unsure whom to believe. Especially when no one is actually saying anything to help explain the situation.

The timing is unfortunate. Because come November, any or all of the current members of council could have their names on a ballot that would see them elected for four years.

Whoopeee! An extra 12 months of dysfunction.

Miracles have sprung from tragedy Editor, The Times: Some would say this last eight days have been hell, others would say it’s been test of character and that we are only given as much as we can handle. As I look back I see clearly I was given the rare gift to witness real miracles from unique vantage point.

Life clutters priorities and blurs what truly matters in each person’s existence.

The things that really matter are too easily moved to the side to make time to deal with daily issues. When one’s centre is ripped from their grasp and tossed into the ether, priorities suddenly become crystal clear. The sense of utter loss and confusion is all consuming.

Before I had a chance to fall an inch, an army of friends and family were at my side, without request, without so much as a whisper they were there. The outpouring of love and support for Sarah and all of our family was beyond anything I could have possibly imagined.

Words cannot begin to describe the effect all of you had on us. You truly were the first miracle.

Thursday morning was the low point,

Sarah’s prognosis was bleak and there were very few who believed she had a chance.

Mr. Bo Macfarlane sent me a text right then, at the very lowest moment.

Along with his other kind words he said, “The Boundary has come alive over this, bud.” I find it hard to type those words even now. They carried so much weight, they meant so much. I knew right then Sarah is living a charmed life and could not possibly be taken from all of us like this. It was the boot in the pants I needed at exactly the right time. I shed all doubt at that moment. The fact that love and support can change everything just by showing it was miracle number two.

Miracle number three is our medical system and the amazing people involved in it. The amount of technology, expertise, hours and money that we as a society devote to helping every person who needs it is almost beyond comprehension. You couldn’t possibly put a price on life but unfortunately it happens all the time. I’ve never been so proud to be a Canadian as I have been through this.

Although flawed, our medical system is based on one thing: saving lives, that’s it, and it shows. There were no discussions of insurance or if Sarah was worth

saving. Teams of doctors, nurses and paramedics worked tirelessly to save Sarah. Helicopters, medicines and machines I won’t even pretend to understand were all employed saving her life. I have a brand new deep respect for them all.

I sat helplessly holding Sarah’s hand through this entire whirlwind, witnessing miracles happen all around us. Seeing all the people whose lives we have touched come together. All the support, well wishes, love and offers to help in anyway they could. The blur of medical professionals work hard at bringing her back. One thing became clear beyond anything else. We are blessed people.

Even then, both of us sick with pneumonia, separated from our children, we had a family of hundreds right there with us.

Watching over us. We can never repay all those that were with us through this but this we can promise, anything, anytime we will be there for all of you.

With regard to taxes, in my opinion anyone that takes anything from any one without permission is a thief and taxes are a form of theft and anyone that collects taxes is a thief!

It is just under four months since Typhoon Haiyan (said to be the strongest windstorm to ever make landfall) swept through the Philippines leaving many dead and thousands of communities reeling, including the village of Cambulao Alangalang, Leyte.

This is the village where Midway resident Elnora Faminoff ’s family lives.

It took over four days for word to reach Elnora of the fate of her family. It was after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 that she finally got the news that she so desperately wanted to hear. A newscaster who had visited Cambulao Alangalang phoned to give her the good news that, while their houses were flat- Residents of the Philippine village of Cambulao Alangalang, Leyte sent some pictures back to tened, her family was safe Canada showing the distribution of 200 care packages made possible by a local fundraising and uninjured. In fact, all dinner in Midway that was initiated by two BCSS students.

Students host dinner, bingo

Each spring, Grade 6/7 students from the West Boundary head to the Lower Mainland for a whirlwind tour of the bright lights.

One year the students from Greenwood Elementary get to go; the next year it will be West Boundary Elementary students’ turn. This year’s trip is June 9-12.

To make that happen there is a steady program of fundraising at both schools. On Feb. 15, the Grade 6/7 students at WBES, their parents, even teachers and school trustee Rose Zitko, were in the school’s gym for a spaghetti dinner and bingo night. The dessert table was worth admission all by itself.

There were lots of first class prizes. The first bingo called got the pick of the litter, so to speak.

WBES vice-principal Jennifer MacDonald said the kids are planning a car wash in the spring, probably in conjunction with the Rock Creek Market. They are also preparing a spring garden catalogue featuring seeds and household decorator items. So be on the lookout for that opportunity to get a start on the garden and help support the 35 kids who will be on the field trip this year.

BCSS junior girls split games

The Boundary Central Secondary junior girls basketball team split their games at a play-off qualifier in Grand Forks on Tuesday. In their first game, BCSS lost to the host Grand Forks Wolves despite 10 points from Kari Durban. BCSS beat Castlegar 30-28 in a game that was close the entire way. Nevada Dynneson led the team with 11 points, while Durban added nine.

Isaac Miks Isaac has left the building.

BCSS grad Isaac Miks has indeed left the building, he’d earned enough credits at the end of the first semester to be able to “skip class” for the rest of the year and start working to save a stake for the move to Vancouver later in the year.

“I plan to graduate in January and after that I will look for work full-time,” Isaac told Councillor Pam Storie during his grad transition exit interview just before Christmas.

He plans to go to the coast with a couple of friends later this year. There he will study audio engineering.

“That seems to be the way to go,” Isaac says. “I’ve always liked music and it seems to be a lot of fun.”

He’d like to go to Harbourside Institute of Technology in North Vancouver.

But he says the choice of which school to attend is still open. “We’re not sure where we are living yet and want to live close to the school.”

Isaac worked the soundboard for the Christmas production of West Side Story at BCSS. Until he moves to the coast he’s planning to work in the Boundary area. His resume lists working for four years with his contractor father, Harry Miks. He’s

done vinyl decking, flooring, built decks, etc. “Pretty much anything in construction,” said Isaac.

“He’s taught me a lot. I know basic level carpentry and framing.”

Isaac’s father is the promoter behind the Sky High Blues Festival in Rock Creek, an event that has gone on for some 16 years.

Over those years Isaac has come to love music. He’s helped at the festival for many years and last year he and other BSCC students played a set from the stage.

Not only does Isaac know his way around a soundboard he also plays guitar, piano and sings. He’s been playing the keyboard for five years, guitar for three and said he’s taught himself—never having had any lessons.

Isaac said he likes English, reads a lot and used to write short stories, art and drama—another tell of his inclination toward creativity. Yes, he admits to writing lyrics too.

Isaac is hoping to find steady work locally that will take him to September.

He describes himself as a hardworking, determined and cooperative indi-

vidual. “I’m thoughtful, dedicated and highly efficient.” And he has a valid B.C. driver’s license too.

He seems to be going into this with his eyes open too. “To be productive, to make changes in your life for the better you have got to do it yourself,” he wrote in his grad transition file. “You can’t wait for stuff to come around – you have got to make it happen.”

“Since grade ten I have come to realize how difficult life really is. Nothing is handed to you freely and you must work hard to succeed. With this in mind, my work ethic and willingness to work have improved greatly. Also I realize that money doesn’t grow on trees and since grade ten I have become much wiser about spending unnecessarily. Instead of spending for things I want, I now try to think and save for what I actually need.”

“I have family members in Vancouver who are willing to help me gain a position in the media industry once I have moved to the area,” was another entry in his exit file. “I truly believe that I will excel in an area that I am enthused about.

That area is music.”

Chicken project a nod to centenary MARIJKA van KUIK Submitted

On Feb. 6, 2014, the Boundary “C” 4-H Club held its second meeting of the year.

As part of this year’s celebrations of 100 years of 4-H in B.C., our club is launching a chicken project. The first 4-H project in B.C. in 1914 was chickens, so what better way to celebrate 100 years! Spearheaded by Nathan Harpur, who will be overseeing this project, the idea has been met with enthusiasm. Fertilized eggs from local flocks and heritage breeds have been put into incubators and we are busy building brooders and coops. You’ll be able to visit our birds at the Rock Creek Fall Fair in the poultry barn. We’ll keep you posted as

the project develops.

The sewing members met on Feb. 15 to work on their quilt for the Cattle Baron’s Ball in April. It will once again be a rag quilt, this year done in autumn tones. They also worked on baby receiving blankets, which will be sent to the Philippines through a relief organization. This was a great project to practice seam-finishing and hemming. We have more workshops planned for the future where we will be working on pajama pants and sweaters. The girls are also starting their projects.

Some of the horse members went on a winter trail ride at Doug and Erika Fossen’s house and helped Doug herd the cattle. With all this ice, it can’t be easy to be doing much riding!

The biggest concern on club mem-

bers’ minds right now is speeches. Due to increased numbers, and to keep people from dozing off at speech night, the club is making it a double header.

Members ages 11 and up will be giving their speeches on March 5; and March 6 will be the nine- and 10-year-olds. A big thank-you to Mr. Wayne Wickens who gave a workshop on how to prepare a speech.

The 20th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball is coming up on April 5. There will be dinner and dancing, as well as a live and silent auction. Kevin Rothwell, the provincial general manager, will be coming to celebrate the 100 years of 4-H in B.C. For the dance, the Sonny Boys will have you tappin’ your toes. We’re hoping to make it extra special as we celebrate 100 years of 4-H.

Pot luck marks Thinking Day

To celebrate International Guiding and the diverse traditions within the Boundary Guiding Unit and to mark World Thinking Day, the Boundary Guiding Unit held a Mother and Daughter Multi Cultural Pot Luck last Friday night at King of Kings Church in Midway. Everyone was asked to bring traditional family recipes, which occasioned a wonderful selection of dishes including Jamaican, Indian and Russian dishes; homemade bread and a dessert bouquet created from pieces of fruit arranged on a skewer to form “roses”.

District Commissioner Linda Sheppard was there as well.

Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have been celebrating World Thinking Day since 1926 and it has been an important fundraising day since 1932 when each Guide

was asked to bring a penny in support of the World Thinking Day Fund.

February 22nd was chosen as the date for Thinking Day because it was the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout Movement, and his wife Olave, who was World Chief Guide.

The theme for the 2014 WTD is UN Millennium Development Goal 2: to achieve universal primary education.

The potluck dinner was a perfect compliment to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts website’s definition of WTD as an opportunity to celebrate international friendship, learn about and take action on important issues, and fundraise.

Another highlight of the evening was the taking of an oath known as the

Promise by two members who are the first Rangers (age 15-17) in the Midway Guiding Program according to Guider Sue Fielding.

The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts has ten million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from 145 countries and is the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world.

“They even have a representative at the United Nations,” said Guider Elaine Fromme.

Hats off to those such as Sheppard, Fromme and Fielding who teach these young girls to attempt, achieve and excel, not despite the fact they are girls— but exactly because they are girls.

God has wonderfully poured out his love on us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Not only His love but His peace…. check out this wonderful verse: “God will quiet us with his love” – Zephaniah 3:17 I have my own story regarding this little song. I’d like to tell you about Old Mildred.

Mildred was a pioneer spinster, and we met her while we lived in Kelowna.

She was pretty eccentric to say the least.

Our kids knew her as the lady with the purple hair. She homesteaded a small acreage near Idabel Lake. Log cabin and barn, no electricity, no phone. She had a

flock of sheep and put up her own hay using an old horse drawn mower.

Judi and I liked her and would visit with the hopes of sharing our faith with her. A few years into our relationship Mildred became ill and was hospitalized.

I visited her regularly even when she drifted into a coma. One nurse told me not to bother, that Mildred was gone and would not come back. You know what I did? I visited anyway. I’d sit and talk with her like I did on the other visits.

One particular visit I had become a bit discouraged and I said out loud to God, I wish I was sure Mildred had made her heart right with You. I’d love to have a sign, but she is in this coma.... Suddenly Mildred sat straight up in bed and clear as can be, sang... “Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so; Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but

He is strong.” Then just as suddenly she laid back down—unconscious—back in the coma.

Several days later she passed away. I officiated at her funeral and was able to share that story with hundreds of people who attended.

Jesus Loves Me was not originally written as a song. It was written as a poem, in a 19th century novel written by Anna Bartlett Warner. In her novel Say and Seal, the main character in the story recites a poem to a dying child, a poem to comfort the little one with the love of Jesus. Then in 1860, William B. Bradbury, considered to be a major force in American church music, read the book Say and Seal and discovered the poem.

He was immediately inspired by the message and put it to music, completing it by adding the chorus. The rest is history.

Over the years dozens of additional verses have been added. I find it interesting how focused it is on the story of salvation. This is much more than a kid’s Sunday School song, it is the Gospel in simplicity.

Stress: It’s a part of life. A recent survey shows that two-thirds of Americans are “stressed out” at leas once per week. Stress and depression may have a greater impact on health-care costs than physical factors such as obesity, smoking and high blood pressure. And most of us seem powerless to alter the self-destructive course we are on when that stress wreaks havoc on virtually every system of our body.

When floundering in a sea of chronic stress, we often choose not to listen to our body’s signals to slow down. So when tension, lack of energy or irritability strike, we turn to frequent daily doses of

candy, coffee, colas, pastries or donuts. But those quick “pick me ups” really let us down when it comes to any sustained energy, clear thinking or the mental and physical stamina we need to cope with prolonged pressure.

There are much better ways to cope and the better nourished we are, the better we will be equipped to do so. This is the ideal time to make the best food choices, not the worst. So take time to make healthful food choices, especially when under stress. No junk food, fast food, alcohol, caffeine or nicotine. Instead of grabbing coffee and a donut on the way to a high-

pressure appointment, take a few minutes to enjoy a whole-grain bagel, fresh fruit and some almonds.

Instead of wolfing down a burger and greasy fries for lunch, relish a garden salad, a black bean burrito and fresh avocado slices. Yummy! For dinner, savor a bowl of steamy vegetable soup with whole-grain crackers and hummus, instead of a “cholesterol bomb” pizza chased down by an antacid.

Consistent healthful choices that boost overall nutritional status will protect us during times of stress and give our body the boost it needs to meet unexpected mental and physical challenges.

Spokane, Castlegar take tourney

The West Kootenay Minor Hockey Association Atom House Playoffs were co-hosted by the Grand Forks and the Boundary Minor Hockey Associations, with games being played in both Grand Forks (Pool A) and Midway (Pool B).

Spokane won the Atom B Division Pool A banner.

Castlegar2 won the Atom B Division Pool B banner on Sunday afternoon in Midway. Both teams in the final game in Midway were from Castlegar so the kids are classmates during the week and rivals on the weekend.

“It was a great weekend of hockey in both arenas,” Boundary Minor Hockey Association president Rob Payne told the Times at the end of the weekend.

“It was very well hosted, very respectful and some really great hockey was played. We look forward to another great season coming up.”

There are no more games for the Atoms though they have four practices left.

Monday, March 3 will see a game between the Atom players and the Atom parents at 6:45.

The next day, Tuesday, March 4, the Pee Wee players will take on their parents.

This weekend there will be lots more playoff action as the Pee Wee playoffs will happen in Kalso and the Midgets are hitting the ice in Trail.

The Boundary Minor Hockey AGM and awards banquet has been scheduled for Thursday, April 17.

The 2013-2014 Boundary Predator Atom Team

Food session focuses on grains Cooking with locally grown grain and milled flour was the feature of an Empowerment of Seniors workshop sponsored by Kettle River Seniors #102.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, Heritage Mills came to the Midway Community Hall to present the workshop which drew 26 people. Heritage Mills, located just east of Rock Creek, is owned by Mel and Elena Steinke.

Also helping in the presentation were the Steinke’s daughter Carmela, her husband Jerry Theroux, and Dr. Christine Simpson.

Heritage Mills has been in business since October 2011. They prefer to retail through local grocers but they will do direct sales in bulk. Their

products are sold in a variety of sizes locally at McMynn’s in Midway and at Kettle River Woodcraft in Rock Creek.

The workshop was one of a series being funded through a New Horizons for Senior’s grant.
