Doctors still able to access patient records

Accountants Ken Gadicke and Rick Minichiello say they established Osprey Medical Clinic to respond to a community need.

“We kept hearing that one of the challenges of recruiting doctors was the lack of clinic space,” Gadicke, an active member of Creston’s last economic development initiative, said on Monday. “There was no room at Family Practice or other clinics and most doctors don’t want to set up on their own.

“We saw Osprey first and foremost as a community development opportunity, and if it made a little profit eventually, that would be great.”

The clinic was closed in January, leaving an estimated 3,000 patients concerned that they were losing access to their doctors. Drs. Raphael Elemuo, Suzanne Hopkins and Tara Guthrie are now temporarily working out of the Family Practice Associates clinic.

But first, they are each raising $2,500 to benefit the BC Cancer Foundation — and taking regular spin classes to get ready for the ride.

“It’s quite a challenge to take on and get prepared,” said Virginia, who runs a popular blueberry farm in Erickson.

“It’s not a game for old people,” added Cliff with a laugh.

“I don’t know any organization in the Creston area that isn’t having issues with volunteer resources,” said Dave St. Germain from Yahk, a veteran community leader.

The workshop will cover the fundamentals of a volunteer program: recruitment, screening, training, placement, tracking, evaluation and recognition. The event will start with a potluck networking social at 5:30 p.m., followed by the workshop from 6-9 p.m.

Ada Browne won first place among the seniors, with second place going Alyssa Eastman and Elizabeth Browne in third. In the junior category, Jessa Adams placed first, with Zoe Henderson in second and Devon Van Der Merwe in third.

Those six will move on to regional speech competition, held this year at the Creston Baptist Church on March 2.

An estimated 600 cubic metres of rock fell on Highway 3A around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 20, closing the road until 1 p.m. Saturday, when it was opened to singlelane alternating traffic.

Both lanes reopened late Sunday afternoon.

Although the road was initially expected to be cleared by mid-Friday, “there were several large boulders blocking both lanes that had to be broken up with a hydraulic rock hammer attached to an excavator,” said Cliff Razzo, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure area manager. The slide occurred 35 kilometres north of Creston near Twin Bays.

Thunder Cats bus helps stranded tour bus riders

Creston RCMP responded to 77 calls from Feb. 17-23, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

February 17 •A tour bus went off Highway 3 at Meadow Wood Road after being hit by a vehicle that lost control on icy roads.

The bus landed in the ditch but no injuries were reported. The Creston Valley Thunder Cats team bus, with Creston Fire Rescue Chief Mike Moore at the wheel, was used to pick up the passengers, who were provided with emergency services until another bus arrived to take them on their way.

•No injuries were reported after a vehicle went off West Creston Road and struck a power pole.

•Police attended a Connel Road residence to assist with a Grand Forks RCMP missing person investigation.

•A minor head-on collision occurred on icy roads in Boswell. No injuries resulted.

•The first of several nontraceable 911 calls in the week was received.

•It was determined that a female reported missing from a Highway 3 residence was OK. •A Clement Road neighbour complained about a neighbour’s snow plowing activities.

•A vehicle went off Highway 95 near Kingsgate but no damage was reported.

•A Ford Explorer backed into a tree on 20th Avenue South, causing minor damage.

February 18 •Police served a subpoena to a Westview Road resident on behalf of the Nelson City Police.

•Police attended a Sixth Avenue South to assist provincial authorities with a child apprehension.

•A search for an intoxicated male reported to be in the Sixth Avenue South area was unsuccessful.

•An elderly Crestview Road male sent $1,200 to Turkey in what police determined was an Internet fraud that claimed his son was in need of money to fly back to Canada. He was asked for another $2,500 shortly afterward. Gollan recommends that no one should respond to such a request without being able to verify the facts.

•A vehicle that reportedly went into the ditch off Highway 3 near Hazel Creek was not located.

•A truck carrying avocadoes went off Highway 3/95 in icy conditions and into the river near Yahk. The driver was not injured.

•Police were contacted about a dispute involving a Nick’s Island Road resident who was refusing access to a diking district representative.

•Two elderly males were involved in a neighbours’ dispute on Regina Street.

•An intoxicated female located in a vehicle parked in a 15th Avenue North parking lot was given a ride home.

February 22 •Police were unable to locate an erratically driven green Chevrolet pickup on Arrow Creek Road.

•A well-being check on Cook Street revealed the resident was OK. •A vehicle reported to be stuck on railway tracks on Newman Road was gone when police arrived.

•Shortly after police received a report about a male entering a vehicle whose alarm was sounding on Canyon Street, the driver arrived at the police station, explaining that he didn’t know how to turn the alarm off.

•A Helen Street business complained about a customer who was bothering staff with stories of time travel.

•A vehicle was stopped on 12th Avenue North and four occupants were found to have smoked marijuana. Twenty grams of dried marijuana and 12 grams of hash were seized but no charges were laid.

February 23 •A driver reported to be driving at a high speed on Northwest Boulevard parked his vehicle in a 15th Avenue North parking lot and ran off. The vehicle was towed.

•A 79-year-old male died suddenly in his Wenger Road home, apparently of natural causes.

•A male youth and his mother on Blackmore Road were advised that he should find a safer place for target shooting with a .22 rifle.

Life changes can change your tax situation For some Canadians, the year 2013 was a time of big changes. They may have gotten married or welcomed a new baby. Or perhaps one of their parents needed a full‐time caregiver. If you experienced a life change last year, taxes are probably the last thing on your mind but all of these situations can impact your return.

Most Canadians have their tax deductions collected by their employer. Employers calculate the amount of deductions based on the information provided by an employee on a TD1 Form. It is quite common for employees to fill out only one TD1 Form and never update it when their tax situation changes.

It is important to remember changes in your life impact how much tax is withheld. Although it is always nice to get a tax refund, it is even better not to pay the money to the government in the first place.

If you get married or have children, your situation has changed. You should ask your payroll or human resources department for a new TD1 Form. The updated information should be used to recalculate the amount of tax withheld. Or if you are eligible for a new tax credit, you could also need to fill out a new TD1 Form. It can make a difference.

For example, the Child Tax Credit is based on $2,234 for each child born in 1995 or later. If you qualify for the benefit, filling out a revised TD1 may result in slightly less tax being withheld by your employer.

(NC) The federal government is once again offering Canadians faster and greener tax refunds this year through its paperless direct deposit program.

Direct deposit, which allows Canadians to have their tax refunds and other federal payments deposited into their bank accounts, makes a lot of sense environmentally; after all, it will save more than 32,000 trees a year, lowers printing and production costs and reduces greenhouse gases caused by the transportation of cheques across Canada.

The cost to produce a cheque is approximately 83 cents while a direct deposit payment costs about 11 cents.

One thing to note, however, is that cheques will only be issued under exceptional circumstances, for example when Canadians do not have access to a financial institution because they live in a remote location.

Ottawa issues more than 300 million pay-

ments annually for everything from tax refunds to old age security; more than 80 percent of recipients have already signed up for direct deposit.

The federal government is phasing out federal government cheques by April 2016. The initiative is expected to save the Canadian government approximately $17.4M per year starting in 2014.

I doubt there were many gasps of astonishment last week when news broke about an Environment Canada study that finds that water from oilsands tailing ponds is leaching into the Athabasca River.

Let me clarify. I mean that it comes as no surprise that toxins from bitumen extraction are getting into Alberta water systems. But it might have come as a shock that there still is an Environment Canada and that it still has people to do such research. After all, aren’t things like scientists necessary to this whole research thing?

Shortly after this story broke, another report in the Tyee caught my attention. In it is information that says Canada’s oil and timber resources have an estimated value of $33 trillion. On that basis alone, Canada is the fourth richest country on the planet, says the story writing by Mitchell Anderson. And that doesn’t count agriculture, fish and other resources, including Premier Christy Clark’s beloved liquid natural gas, the stuff that requires pumping fresh water and chemicals into the ground in order to extract it.

The oil and timber wealth could be cause for concern or celebration, depending on one’s view.

Natural resources provide jobs, no doubt about it. But is obsession with their exploitation — and make no mistake, our provincial and federal governments are hanging their hats on their future with it — coming at the expense of us taking our place in the digital age?

Taking refuge in Buddha

There are two aspects to taking refuge in the Buddha. At the literal level, we take refuge in the historical Buddha as an example of someone worthy of emulation. The Buddha was not a god. He was an ordinary human being, like you and I, who saw through the deceptions of life, both on the ordinary and spiritual levels. He found the awakened mind by relating with the confusion and insanity all around him. He looked at those situations clearly and then recognized that his own mind was the source of this chaos and confusion. Then he disciplined his mind and attained enlightenment.

When we take refuge in the Buddha, we take refuge in the example of his life. He started out in the same kind of life that we lead, with the same confusions. But he renounced that life in order to find truth. He, like us, was raised in a theistic society that believed in a god who would rescue people from their suffering. But he saw that there were problems with that, so instead of looking for an outside solution, he looked inwards. Taking refuge in the Buddha involves realizing that our stories are comparable with his, and then deciding to follow his example and do what he did.

One of the big steps in the Buddha’s development was his realization that there is no reason he should believe in, or expect, anything greater than the basic inspira-

tion that already existed within in him. In Zen we call this basic inspiration “Buddha nature.” Taking refuge in our innermost nature is the second level of taking refuge in the Buddha. When we take refuge in the Buddha, we take refuge in our own enlightened nature, our own experience, our own potential to be kind, generous peaceful disciplined and wise.

It is the human mind that has created the chaos and confusion around us, and it is the human mind can transform that chaos to peace and harmony. When we take refuge in the Buddha, we learn to transform anger into compassion, greed to generosity, cruelty to kindness, impatience to patience and harmful impulse to self-

discipline.

In a way, you could say that taking refuge in the Buddha describes what we do when we meditate. We stop believing our thoughts and find a deeper mind that is beyond our conditioning. When we take refuge in the Buddha, we recognize that so long as we’re dwelling in our thoughts, as long as we’re trying to find some escape or mindless entertainment we’re going to be intermittently unhappy.

Taking refuge in the Buddha means both following the example of the Buddha’s life and taking refuge in our own Buddha nature, which is deeper and wiser than our thoughts and conditioned beliefs.

Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, notice when you get lost in thinking, let that thinking go and bring your attention to your breath.

Notice how doing this over and over brings relaxation, and often an insight into how to solve confusion in your daily life.

West Creston needs time to cool off To the Editor: Regardless of which majority made the wise decision in the West Creston fire service petition, whether it was the Dec. 31 majority no vote or the Jan. 15 majority yes vote, there is a principle involved here, beyond arguments over whose money is used for what and whether security is a vapour.

At a time of near pandemic angst and anxiety at the way politics and the economy are headed, there should have been more sensitivity in the way the petition vote was handled. In my opinion, a cooling off period would be helpful for the sake of community solidarity. If the yes vote side is correct, their chances of reaching a consensus should improve with time.

Meanwhile, we Canadians can look with envy on Iceland, which jailed their fraudulent bankers and now enjoys a low rate of unemployment.

Letter an insult to all firefighters To the Editor: (Re: “Fire Service will be Useless”, Feb. 6 Advance) I have no problem with someone exercising their democratic right to oppose fire service but I do have a problem with the venomous spirit this letter contained. I was at a meeting recently arranged by the writer. I agreed with a lot of what was said.

The guest speaker at the meeting suggested that love and honesty were at the core of all good efforts to work for betterment in our communities. I agree wholeheartedly, but Vladimir Certik’s letter failed both. It was an outright attack on everyone who opposed the writer’s view. No love there!

I appreciated Rachel Beck’s assessment (“Lines were Crossed in Fire Debate”, Jan. 23) regarding the poisoning of the Binks family’s dog and harassment of the family. I believe lines were crossed in Vladimir’s letter, also.

It’s this kind of expounding that fuels the fire of those who would do outrageous things.

I do not know what went on with the incident regarding the forest fire, but I do know I do not appreciate the attack on firefighters in general, as put forth in this letter.

To make a stand that we also do not need fire service is selfish and short of good sense. I have been in the Yahk fire service for about 10 years. It takes lots of training and hard work. We saved a building from two brush fires and the start of a forest fire, one beside Yahk itself. As we cleaned up on the fire, the forestry people arrived from Cranbrook — time is of the essence. If we did not have local service, more damage would have happened in both than the entire cost of our fire service. We prevented another fire from destroying a row of mobile homes.

As far as Creston Fire Rescue not saving adjacent structures, that statement is totally untrue. As a youth, I saw the entire northwest end of town saved when the Overwaitea burned on the corner, which is now the Royal Bank.

I personally was on the firefighting team that saved what is now the Kokanee Inn and other buildings adjacent to the three-story building that was located on the present-day parking lot.

Recently, I have seen protection as Sunset Seed Co. burned, and as a friend’s home caught on fire on 16th Avenue and was contained. It was in the midst of a row of homes.

For the record, Creston Fire Rescue has 25 volunteers, not 70. The $2 million in equipment boils down to $400 per year per town resident, which, amortized over 20 years, is $20 per person per year. That’s very inexpensive protection.

The comment to have unpaid leadership lacks any common sense.

Lives depend on the decisions these leaders make. They need years of training and experience, they have put their lives on the line and they also need to pay their bills — and have earned the right to a decent paycheque.

Regarding fire insurance, my taxes in Yahk increased $100 for fire service and my insurance dropped $500.

Insurance companies are not going to knock on your door. A good suggestion (not of my origin) is to invite them to a community meeting to bid against each other for the combined community insurance rates.

This letter was an insult to me personally as a volunteer firefighter, an insult to all firemen who lay their lives on the line daily and an insult to a lot of people who work toward a better, safer community.

Community must look after seniors To the Editor: The purpose of my letter is to document a growing concern: As more seniors are walking whether due to doctors’ orders, loss of driver’s licences or just to keep healthy and alert, it behooves the rest of the community to watch out for them — not harm them.

In that respect, I would like to send two Frosties (the opposite of a Warm Fuzzy) to two individuals whom I can only think of as either incredibly unthinking or just plain idiotic. Your actions almost resulted in a trip to the emergency room for my 82-year-old mother.

The first happened on Feb. 20 when a black truck swerved toward the sidewalk where my mother was walking, spraying her with icy slush from head to toe, almost causing her to slip. If you did that on purpose, where was your thinking on that one? If you slid in the slush, why weren’t you driving to conditions?

The second incident occurred on Feb. 22. Again, my mother was out walking her regular route when a man walking his dog on a loose leash let it run toward her and it tried to jump on her. His response was, “Oh, he just wants to make friends.” He did not bring the dog under control but

turned to talk to another man, at which time the dog tripped my mother and she fell, banging her head and shoulder on the hard ground. This “gentleman”, and I use the word loosely, didn’t even help her up or inquire if she was OK — nor did the man he was talking to.

When I went to check on her after she got home she had a bump on her forehead and a large bruise starting. Today, she is bruised on her shoulder and hip from the fall and her eye is also black.

Why? Because not only did you not care enough about your dog to keep an eye on it but also because you showed total disregard for the welfare of anyone else by not keeping it on a tighter leash.

Definitely Frosties are in order for both of you.

Municipal gov’ts can consider ban on GM foods To the Editor: Some weeks ago, I attended a thought-provoking forum on the topic of possible hazards associated with genetically modified foods. The presenters were Dr. Thierry Vrain, former head of biotechnology at Agriculture Canada’s Summerland Research Station, and Dr. Shiv Chopra, a former Health Canada scientist. They were early victims of government plans to greatly reduce and eliminate scientific research programs, some by dismantling the programs, others by drastic reduction of funding.

They are both eminently qualified to speak to this matter. Just a few examples from their presentation: One of the aims of genetic modification is to incorporate pesticide capability into the plant so insects that would normally damage the plant learn to stay away. Presumably other consumers of the plant would also like to do that, which is why this food is not labelled as genetically modified. The other major objective of genetic modification technology is to incorporate resistance to herbicides in the food plant so weeds can be eradicated by treatment with Roundup, leaving the food plant alive. Since weeds acquire resistance to the herbicide, it appears this becomes a losing battle, as more and more herbicide is required until it doesn’t work at all. Many other issues were described, obviously too many to include here.

A very interesting observation that was presented was that though provincial and federal governments cannot legislate against genetically modified organisms because of free-trade agreements, municipal governments can, and a number in B.C. are considering doing just that. How about us?

An interesting sidenote, which prompted this letter, is that I discovered on a recent trip that two islands in Hawaii have passed laws banning introduction of genetically modified plants, coupling this with programs to train young farmers (just like Creston), by producing grass-fed beef and other soil-friendly initiatives.

Guess what? Three multi- national seed companies are suing to overturn the Hawaiian legislation.

Fred Mawson: the man, the myth

BY JOHN KETTLE It is with great personal sadness that I pen this about my friend Fred Mawson.

Fred passed away recently, and in keeping with his personal wishes there has been no funeral or public gathering on his behalf.

I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t acknowledge the impact he had on this community and most certainly on most everyone that knew him. Mawson’s Sports, under Fred’s tutelage for many years, was the epicentre of the coffee shop gang who willingly shared ideas and ways to solve all of our worries and ills. I was part of that group some days and I have to admit that after 12 years as an elected official, some of the common sense solutions bantered about at Mawson’s for the issues of the day seem very clear and focused, considering the world today of sound bites and talking heads who seem to know everything and have an answer for nothing. I digress.

Mawson’s Sports has been a cornerstone of the Creston Valley for as long as most people can remember. At one time, when Vic Mawson and Fred, his son, ran the store, it was acknowledged as the second oldest “single proprietorship” in Canada. Somewhere in Fred’s belongings is a letter from U.S. Congressman Ron Coleman of Texas congratulating Vic and Fred on this accomplishment. I hope Fred’s sons, Ron and Vern, find this letter.

While there are many more people who knew Fred much longer, I wanted to write this on behalf of my wife Marilyn and myself because of the impact he had on us and our family.

A come-and-go tea will be held to remember Fred Mawson (Nov. 24, 1930-Jan. 8, 2014) at Rick’s Iron Kettle Restaurant from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 8.

Canada in the late 1980s, one of the first stores we visited in Creston was Mawson’s Sports. I remember bringing the whole crew of two girls and two boys, Marilyn and myself into the store to load up with the necessities of life. Our visit to Mawson’s followed a first-time visit for groceries to a store that cracked my kids up with a name that sold groceries to overweight people. To this day, they laugh about this misconception when we pass Overwaitea Foods.

Back to Fred. Once we established we were new Canadians living east of town at a place we called Meadow Creek Ranch, Fred was all smiles and treated us like family. I do remember, however, we went back to the ranch that day loaded with fishing gear, hunting gear, snowshoes, ammunition, tents, lanterns, fruit dryers and, most importantly, every lure and bait known to mankind that was guaranteed to kill the fish when used properly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Fred smile as broadly as the day we loaded our booty into the one-ton truck, every item at full retail and most certainly some of it reducing the prior year’s inventory that only a Texan would buy.

I reminded Fred many times over the years of our original meeting. He was gracious in his acknowledgement of our pur-

chase but assured me he did right by us in our subsequent purchases over the last 18 years.

As many people know, you never wanted to test old Fred when you went shopping at his store. I have been present when he actually asked people to leave and go shop somewhere else. You did not mess with Fred and if he didn’t like you he didn’t sell to you. There was no amount of money that could buy anything in his store once he decided not to sell to you. He was stubborn that way.

That being said, I have also observed on numerous occasions where local community groups would come and ask for donations to help their cause.

Fred would bluster up and act like you were asking for his firstborn before recanting and giving donations only if you pinkie swore never to tell anyone. He was generous to a fault.

I don’t think most folks knew how big-hearted Fred actually was. He loved his community.

His commitment to the Creston Valley, and certainly to the Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club and Ducks Unlimited, was unwavering. He has been, in my opinion, a mainstay of their success in our valley.

I guess most of all I want everyone to know how blessed my family and I have been to have known Fred and his family.

Our boys and girls have grown up fishing and hunting with gear and advice from Mawson’s Sports. Because of the kindness and love of the outdoors shown to them by Fred Mawson, I believe our children are better off now as adults. Their trips home to Creston in the summertime most times included taking our nine grandchildren to Mawson’s Sports, for a short visit with Fred and the purchase of the new and latest killer lure that will catch the “big one” at Kootenay Lake.

Even though Fred is now gone, his legacy and his commitment to our environment is recognized by every visitor that comes into Canada at the Rykerts crossing, driving past Mawson Lake.

Happy fishing, Fred. We will miss you.

Please be advised that the RDCK is conducting an on-going Waste Screening Program at the Creston Resource Recovery Facility. The objective of this process is to educate the public about what is accepted for disposal at the site and to encourage recycling and waste diversion. All loads and household garbage bags will be inspected as part of the waste screening process.

All Waste Screening activities will be undertaken to ensure compliance with the Resource Recovery Facilities Bylaw (RDCK Bylaw 2174). At this time waste screening events will be for the purpose of education only; no penalties will apply for non-compliant loads during this period of time. In the future, customers found to be non-compliant with RDCK Bylaw 2174 will be subject to appropriate fees & penalties.

I have found by talking to various people with some form of dystonia that, with many of them, the condition started with some kind of prolonged, severe physical or emotional stress when they were young, and for some, when they were older. The stress seems to have triggered secondary effects from what experts in the field say may be a genetic foul-up. I understand dystonia can also arise from nerve damage and/or inflammation. There seems to be an inherited factor in some dystonias, like focal dystonia (concentrated in one area).

Unlike Parkinson’s, they think dystonia expresses itself through the basal ganglion, ending up in sending mixed up neurochemical messages to the muscles.

That’s giving you a sketchy story and the way I see it but, of course, I am not an expert.

One way of not curing but of lessening the severity of the problem, I have found for myself, is working with my hands with small detail, such as in drawing, intricate mechanics, typing and some other more general hand activity. Acute concentration seems to be a key here.

Chasing after a football wakes up the symptoms big time.

Taking Botox treatments (by minute injections) is the answer to alleviating my dystonia. But it is not a cure.

I relate all this, not to just acquaint you with another side of my life, but to provide awareness of this condition.

What I have written is only part of the story. There is the rest of the story. An expert told me that over 15,000 people in B.C. have some form of dystonia. Most cases are undiagnosed. Other cases are not severe enough to be cause for concern. But with others, for lack of knowledge, the condition prevails untreated while the individual suffers emotionally, financially and in practical ways.

At any time, as well as at times when a person is afflicted by dystonia or any other ailment, it is extremely important to look after the rest of the body by regularly focusing outward (not inward), exercising, healthy eating (plant-based diet), and by getting fresh air and sunshine in the outdoors.

NDP hosting women’s day East Shore author reading at library

International Women’s Day should be on your calendar for 1 p.m. March 8, when men, women, and children will be welcome at Creston Valley Public Library.

Go easy on lunch — the Creston GoGo Grannies will be waiting to provide a variety of snacks and give a short history about their origin and activities.

Organized by the NelsonCreston New Democratic Party Constituency Association, the focus of the event will not be political, but rather a celebration of women.

Some interesting speakers have been lined up: Brenda Luke has a passion for goalball. This is played with three contestants a side, all of whom wear blindfolds. Luke,

who attends Prince Charles Secondary School, is legally blind and dreams of playing goalball on Team Canada.

Julie Miller has raised three daughters in Creston Valley. She has been a child and youth counselor for 15 years and currently works with youth addictions.

Miller is excited about her most recent professional development, which involves incorporating integrative restorative yoga with counselling.

Elena Yeung works for School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) and early childhood services. She is a musician, singer and composer who will share a personal story relative to her creativity.

LaRae Blackmore is a Grade 11 poet who dreams of a better world.

Debby Johnson is well known for her community work. She

has started a local chapter of BraveHeart Women, and will share information about the magical journeys of socially conscious women achieving change, one stage at a time.

Gary Smith has been a yoga practitioner for over 40 years.

He would like to help women explore stress reduction techniques.

Brandy Hunt (nee Dyer) has two daughters. She began as the owner of Imagine Ink graphic design and printing.

Nearly two years ago, she added Creative Fix, a fun, artsy, gift and coffee shop, a female hang out. A few years ago, she wrote and produced an illustrated book for children called Pat’s Place. She will share her life story, wherein she has had good and bad experiences.

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats ended their regular season on Saturday, beating the Columbia Valley Rockies 4-1 three days before they would face each other in the first round of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs.

“It was like we almost started early,” said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepditch. “The game that they played Saturday is almost the same as what we feel they’re going to play.”

The Thunder Cats and Rockies played their first two playoff games in Creston yesterday and Tuesday (both after the Advance’s deadline), and they will visit Invermere tomorrow and Saturday for the next two. Should more than four games be necessary, the next would be played in Creston (Monday) and Invermere (Tuesday), with game 7 in Creston (Wednesday).

The season’s penultimate game took place Feb. 19 in Grand Forks, which resulted in the Thunder Cats, in first place in the Eddie Mountain Division, beating the Border Bruins, at the bottom of the Neil Murdoch Division and no shot at the playoffs, 5-2.

“They’re still a pretty good team,” said Hepditch. “We wanted to make sure we kept our own game sharp for the playoffs.”

The Border Bruins scored the first period’s only goal, with Thunder Cats goalie Brock Lefebvre making some early saves to keep the Thunder Cats in the game. Thunder Cats Brandon Formosa (power play), Connor Kidd and Matti Jmaeff each scored in the second period. The Border Bruins added a second goal early in the third, but Jesse Collins scored at 3:45, with Logan Styler adding the fifth goal with 23 seconds left in the game.

“When you get that many shots, something good is bound to happen,” said Hepditch.

The Thunder Cats made 63 shots on Saturday, when they hosted the Rockies. The game started out slowly, though, with a single goal by Jmaeff in the first period.

“We were a little unsure how they were going to come out and play,” said Hepditch.

“We were kind of just feeling out the water at the start. They came out and wanted to play hard, so we raised our game to where we can play.”

Connor Ward and Ethan Rusnack scored in the second period, and Jaymes Veitch scored in the third before the Rockies got their first goal with five minutes left in the game.

“He set up a lot of good plays, and was very good on the penalty kill,” said Hepditch.

“That’s something we’re going look for him to do right into the playoffs.”

Although the Rockies’ 37-point record didn’t come close to the Thunder Cats’ 80 points — and still behind the Kimberley Dynamiters’ 60 and Fernie Ghostriders’ 54 — Hepditch said the Thunder Cats can’t take the Rockies fourth-place finish for granted.

“We’re going to have to play well to even get out of the first round,” he said. “Columbia Valley is a good team, and if we don’t bring our game, we’re not moving past them.

“We’ve just got to find a way to get pucks to the net and hope we get some in the net.”

Junior boys win home basketball tournament SUBMITTED

The Prince Charles Secondary School Comets junior boys basketball Blue team came out triumphant at their home tourney.

The Creston team was divided into two squads, a Blue and White, to help fill the field.

The White team, composed mostly of Grade 9 students, won a close one over the Parkland Raiders of Cranbrook 41-35. Makaiah Gorham and Jeff Foster both played great defence, as well as being top scorers. The team lost a tough one to Sparwood 43-30, with Ajay Sidu and Andrew Armstrong putting in strong games. The team squeaked past Kimberley in a barn burner 32-28; Marcus Bell directed the offense and netted eight points, while Gorham led the team in steals and points with 11.

The Blue team came out on top over Mount Baker of Cranbrook 44-32.

James Troughton and Leo Evans were top scorers, with 12 and 13 points. The Blue handily beat Kimberley 69-39 with Jordin Czar and Jamond Dortman hooping 18 and 15 points. This put the two Creston teams against each other in the semifinals.

The White team came out strong, taking the first quarter, but the Blue team came back triumphant with a strong second half. Hans Nicolajsen popped in 16 for Blue and Bell had eight for White. This put Blue in the final against Mount Baker and White in the thirdfourth place game against Sparwood, which put in a strong performance and again came out on top taking third place. Gorham had another strong game with 22 points.

In the final, Blue had a battle on their hands. They took a two-point lead after one quarter and then six at the half, but Mount Baker slowly clawed their way back and by the end of the third, Creston’s lead was two points. The two teams battled back and forth through the last quarter, and in the final minute Dortman made a clutch three-pointer that helped secure the win and the championship. Evans and Czar topped the scoring, with 15 and 13 points, respectively, while Axel Marini played some key defence down the stretch. It was a great weekend for both teams with all players having great games and gaining valuable playing experience.

This weekend, the junior boys host the East Kootenay championship on Friday and Saturday.

Stewart Fawdrey

July 21, 1929 - January 30, 2014

Stewart passed away at home in Qualicum Beach on Thursday, January 30th at the age of 84. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy in 2008. Stewart leaves to mourn his passing; sons, Glenn (Kerry), Donn (Betty) and Briann; daughter, Jannis (Ken); grandchildren, Kevin, Michelle, Scott, Bert, Megan, Erin, and Chelsea; great granddaughter, Addison; great grandsons, Kayden and Owen; brother, Aleck; and sister, Kit. Stewart was born in North Vancouver on July 21, 1929 to Norman and Della Fawdrey. He grew up in Lynn Valley moving to Peace River with his family at age 16. A year later, Stewart moved back to North Vancouver to look after his maternal grandmother, Maud.

He worked cutting roadside grass with a horse and mower – giving all of his earnings to help support his grandmother. He lost this job when the municipality purchased a tractor for the job, so he did odd jobs, landscaping and cutting firewood, using a onehorse wagon for delivery. It was during one of these jobs that he met Dorothy. They were married October 10, 1952, and moved to a small farm in Maple Ridge.

In early 1960’s, Stewart brought his growing family to Errington, where his love of the heavy horses, particularly Percheron’s, allowed him to make a living doing what he enjoyed. He always used the heavy horses in the course of daily work and in the running of the family farm.

He worked for many years first with Kirk Evergreens, then BC Forest Products with his horses thinning trees and selling the firewood. From 1973 – 1985 he supplied firewood to Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, Rathtrevor Park and occasionally Sproat Lake, Taylor Arm and Little Qualicum Provincial Parks. 1985 he worked for the Provincial Forest Service and McMillan Bloedel doing forest stand improvement and thinning.

In 1989 he used his horses to pull fibre optic cable across from Port Alberni to Coombs, pulling the cable up old logging roads from a spool on a spool truck.

Some of Stewart’s many joys were when he would take the grade one students from Errington School for a hay ride which he did for 30 years, he was also active with Coombs Fall Fair which he also attended for 30 years and to a lesser extent was involved with Silver Spur Riding Club. In late August he would give wagon rides to the elderly at Trillium Lodge and at Rathtrevor Park Farm Days put on by the provincial government. 1n the early 1980’s he met Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip at Malaspina College (now VIU).

He was there with his horses showcasing the horse / forestry program @ VIU Later in 1989, Stewart and Dorothy moved from Vancouver Island to Lister in the Creston Valley. Here they made many friends and Stewart continued on farming with his beloved horses. After Dorothy’s passing in 2008, Molly his yellow lab has been his constant and faithful companion. In December, Stewart left Creston to stay with his daughter in Qualicum Beach. Stewart passed away peacefully at home with ever-faithful Molly at his side. His kind heart and gentle nature will be missed by all.

Stewart’s family would like to thank his many friends, both on Vancouver Island and the Creston Valley for their care and support. He has shared many good memories and laughs with these friends “consequently” we would like to ensure they are acknowledged.

Stewart’s family is very grateful for the care and support of so many people including Dr. John Rieger, Oceanside Hospice Society, Oceanside Health Nursing and Sue’s Senior Care.

There will be no service by Stewart’s request. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Stewart’s memory with a donation in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society, Unit E - 777 Poplar Street, Nanaimo, BC V9S 2H7

Two films left in LKB aboriginal film series LOWER KOOTENAY BAND

The Lower Kootenay Band invites everyone to join them for the remaining two presentations of the aboriginal film series at the Snoring Sasquatch, Windtalkers at 6 p.m. March 3 and Where the Spirit Lives at 6 p.m. April 14. Each film will be followed by a short discussion.

“The purpose for this initiative is to underscore the unique culture of aboriginal peoples, as well as to bring an understanding of the historical traumas and issues native communi-

ties are faced with,” explained Chief Jason Louie.

But it also provides an opportunity for some affordable family entertainment during the winter months.

The first of the three films, Smoke Signals (1998), was shown Feb. 11 to an appreciative audience, followed by an opportunity for discussion about the film, the issues it addressed and questions about First Nation’s culture. The lighthearted film was chosen to be presented first because it’s “funny and real” and has a local connection, as it is set largely on the nearby Coeur d’Alene reserve in Idaho where many local residents have friends. It generated considerable excitement locally when it was first released.

Windtalkers, starring Adam Beach and Nicolas Cage, is a 2002 movie about Navajo code talkers during the Second World War’s Pacific campaign. Native veterans, explained Chief Louie, contributed greatly to the war effort, but received little recognition and faced unfair treatment on coming home.

Where the Spirit Lives (1989) was chosen to be the last of the series because it will be the most difficult to watch, given the traumatic events it portrays. The film follows

two native children who, in 1937, were taken from their village and forced into the Canadian residential school system.

The idea for the film series came about when Louie recently met Snoring Sasquatch co-owner Paul Hutcheson,

Admission is by donation with proceeds going toward the annual Yaqan Nukiy Powwow.

it was Valentine’s Day and he was holed up in a hotel in Vancouver.

“I’m a romantic,” said Lavigne, “I like to plan romantic things. This particular Valentine’s, I scheduled a bunch of concerts so today is rather like a Lonely Hearts Club day. I’ve been communicating with the children by texting. They are brilliant. A few days before I left I bought some roses and some treats, and put them in the shed to keep cool. The kids were sworn to secrecy.

They were so excited that by 5 a.m. they had snuck down in the dark with their flashlights to prepare everything for Alice.

“Alice is a real support. I couldn’t attempt any of what I do without the family. It definitely feels like a team effort. They are troopers. When I get home from a tour, I feel like a rock star as the kids scream, ‘Daddy’s home!’ ” This spring, Lavigne takes The Road to Carnegie Hall across B.C., and then to Southern Ontario, accompanied by Patrick Courtin on piano, Casey Rider with guitar, Simon Millington on bass and Barry Leung on violin.

“To perform at Carnegie Hall is, for a singer, a huge accomplishment, rather like a mountaineer reaching the summit of Mount Everest,” said Lavigne. “I casually sent an email with my biography. I got an immediate response saying they’d love to have me.”

On the program are songs that will touch every heart: The Prayer, Music of the Night from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Song of the Mira, Nessun Dorma, Hymn à l’amour by Edith Piaf and, of course, Danny Boy. Since that event in 2009, Lavigne has toured across North America, performed for Prince Charles, and with David Foster.

“You just never know where life will take you,” he said. “Obviously you hope and you dream and you plan, but life has a funny way of having its own trajectory. With the Road to Carnegie show, I hope to ignite the fire of believing and dreaming. Alice found a wonderful quote recently: ‘The world doesn’t need more successful people. It needs more dreamers and lovers.’ ” Lavigne performs at the Prince Charles Theatre at 7:30 p.m. March 1, presented by the Creston Concert Society. Tickets are $22 in advance for adults and $10 for students, or $25/$12 at the door. Gone Country reuniting for Sunday concert SUBMITTED

Sunday evening at the Snoring Sasquatch will see some of the community’s well-known entertainers perform their Gone With the Wind concert.

This group is comprised of several original members of the Gone Country dance band, with a couple of additions, and features Stan Spence, Deb Mehrer, Ted Bryant, Mike Mitchell and Eric Johnson.

Stan Spence originally hails from the Thompson region in Manitoba and is currently a social worker in Cranbrook, and is the inspiration behind the band. He loves countrywestern music and will be singing and playing rhythm guitar.

Deb Mehrer has played rock and folk bass in local bands and, in Gone Country, was

recruited to do vocals, too. She is a frequent sight not only on the musical stage, but in community theatre, as well.

Ted Bryant was recently the lead in the Kings of Kitchener band and has played with Gone Country and other local groups. With his excellent musical abilities on guitar, bass and vocals, he is a valued member of this Gone With the Wind concert.

Mike Mitchell is known for his suitcase-drumming and harmonica skills, as well as a quick wit. He was the drummer in Kings of Kitchener and has performed with various artists on Creston stages. The addition of Mike will allow Eric Johnson, usually on drums, to play his six- and 12-string guitars and present his own vocal selection, as well. Eric is a familiar face in

the community as both a solo performer and accompanist.

This group of people loves to play music that is both familiar and entertaining. One recent audience member complained her foot was worn out from tapping through all the songs!

We defy anyone who attends this concert to sit through the show without tapping their feet, bobbing their head or singing along. The plan is to have a fun evening and make a lot of people happy through music.

Tickets for the March 2 show are $10 in advance, available at Black Bear Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Kingfisher Used Books, or $13 at the door, which opens at Paul Hutcheson 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7.

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight brands like Ford, GM or Ram?

The Tundra is even as capable as many of the domestic brands but in some ways it still has a way to go to truly be an alternative to Ford, GM and Ram.

is a step up from the lower trims but not nearly as supple and luxurious as the new batch of interiors from Ram and GM. Those trucks, in particular, have almost luxury-sedan interiors that make the driver forget they are in a truck. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers.

Drive Powering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines.

The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the

number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort.

The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have improved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride.

Verdict The Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class.

What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domestic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic.

Looks As part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille.

The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, framing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum.

The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers.

Where the rubber hits the road matters in tire selection

Snow way to drive The recent snowstorms have brought out the best and the worst in B.C. drivers. I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every person I’ve watched over-rev a car in a futile bid to escape the combined clutches of snow and ice. If your car is not shod for the winter weather, then stay home or take a cab. Otherwise, take off slowly in a higher gear than you would in dry weather. You will stand a lot more chance of gaining traction and less reliant on those good people who dig you out!

It is vital to make the right choice and then maintain tires so they last for a long time.

Tires are specified in this form - 265/75R/16. The first number is the width of the truck tire, the second number is the aspect ratio or height of the sidewall and the third number is the wheel diameter or rim size.

The height of your sidewall should be chosen based on the conditions where you drive your truck most often. If you only drive on the street then a low profile truck tire will be fine, but if you go off-roading then you are going to want more tire in between your rim and the ground. That way you will not bottom out on the rims when the tires encounter rough terrain off-road.

Your truck’s handling becomes easier with bigger tire width,but will make more noise and may decrease the fuel efficiency,and slip more when it rains.

Make sure that the rim and truck tire you choose will fit inside the wheel well of the truck; upgrade your brakes to help stop this increase in weight. The wheel rim width varies from truck to truck. The wheel rim width is rounded off to the nearest half inch of the tire. The best choice is to have the rim width at about 90 percent of the tread width of the tire.

Keep your tires intact and in good shape. The main cause of the tire wear and tear is incorrect tire pressure. Look through your owner’s manual, on the sticker inside the driver’s door, or on the tire itself to find the correct air pressure.

Seasonal changes can affect the air pressure of the tires. Cold temperatures drop the air pressure, and warm temperatures increase the air pressure. A 10 percent swing in the temperatures causes a 1lb. change in the air pressure. Sudden changes in temperature are a good time to check the pressure of the tires.

Rotating the tires keeps the tread wear balanced and can help in slippery and wet conditions. A simple rule about rotating your tires is to do it on every other oil change. This will make the tires last longer and allow a comfortable ride for many kilometres.
