Working on the train gang

Volunteers from Victoria to Parksville keep the east side of the Port Alberni Sub clear SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Each summer in the Alberni Valley, more than 13,000 tourists line up on the boardwalk outside the Alberni Train Station awaiting their first glimpse of steam from Locomotive No. 7. The 1929 Baldwin steam engine will take them on a rail adventure to McLean Mill National Historic Site.

When the steam train is not running, volunteers with the APR and Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society (IHS) tend to the six-kilometre line of railway tracks between the train station and the national historic site, and beyond to Loon Lake near the top of the Alberni Summit.

But the railway tracks don’t stop at McLean Mill.

The line known as the Port Sub—63 kilometres (39 miles) long—extends all the way to Parksville, hooking up with the main Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway.

And while the IHS is ultimately in charge of maintenance on the Port Sub (and receives the bulk of the maintenance budget from the Island Corridor Foundation) there is a second gang of dedicated volunteers that looks after the other side of the tracks.

The East End Track Gang (EETG) can be seen running their speeders and hi-railer almost weekly along the Port Sub from Parksville to Loon Lake, clearing brush, keeping the broom at bay and making

sure no rock slides, washouts or felled trees block the track.

One gloomy Saturday last March

Scott McCormick, brothers Al and Glen Migneault, Dennis Dalla-Vicenza and another volunteer

launched a pair of Fairmont speeders as well as the group’s hi-railer—four rail wheels mounted onto

a 1996 Ford 250 4x4 that can run on either railroad tracks or pavement—on the tracks across from

Forest Bus Tours in Parksville.

The crew was armed with chainsaws and heavy-duty clippers; the better to cut down broom and small alders encroaching on the tracks. Volunteers come from as far away as Victoria, and they are all rail fans who have been doing these trips since 2009.

“We started mainly to preserve the line—60 to 70 per cent of the line had completely overgrown,” said McCormick, vicepresident of the E&N Division of the Canadian Railroad Historical Association.

“We wanted to make sure a piece of Vancouver Island’s railway didn’t disappear through neglect.”

RailAmerica sent its last train over the Port Sub in 2001, discontinuing freight service to Port

Alberni—the most westerly point of the Canadian Pacific Railway—due to rising costs.

Volunteers had a “monumental” task of clearing brush enough that rail traffic can now use the line again.

Regular speeder tours come through once or twice a year and there are aspirations among rail enthusiasts that a tourist train will one day run between Parksville and Port Alberni.

Even in March, the view is spectacular riding over the trestles at Cameron Lake, with Highway 4 snaking through the barren trees across the glinting steel of the lake’s surface. The terrain is different than the run out to McLean Mill—not as open, but equally stunning, with arbutus trees jutting from rock faces, and lichen the colour of ochre, rich leather and deep red breaking up the dull gray of the rock.

“I can see this being a big tourist attraction,” says Dalla-Vicenza, who has ridden tourist railways around North America.

Teachers readying for strike vote WAWMEESH G HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A

lberni Valley teachers are set to participate in a province-wide vote on a strike mandate, Alberni District Teachers Union President Ken Zydyk said.

Teachers will be voting March 4-6.

Voting in UclueletTofino will take place March 4, while advanced and mainday voting will take place March 5-6 in Port Alberni.

“Our members wanted a negotiated settlement so they are very disappointed with this.” Zydyk said.

“I’m confident that we’ll get a high number of votes in favour of a strike.”

“Unreasonable” proposals from provincial negotiators team about class sizes and wage increases prompted the vote,

Zydyk said.

The government proposal would completely nullify teachers’ victory around class size and composition, he said.

As well, the wage proposal is lower than what other public sector unions have received to date, and calls for a zero per cent increase in 20142015.

Government flouting the recent court ruling on class size stuck in Zydyk’s craw, he said.

“When they put in a proposal shortly after the court ruling that ignored it, I lost all hope that we’d get a negotiated agreement without a strike mandate,” he said.

BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) president Jim Iker said strike action would be phased in, and would not include forcing teachers to stop extracurricular volunteer work or, withholding report cards.

aahuupayak School students have helped develop a new video game that teaches children how to avoid Internet predators.

CyberCops: Air Dogs was developed

by Vancouver-based LiveWWWires Designs Ltd. Students at Haahuupayak helped test the prototype when it was first developed in 2009.

“Haahuupayak was part of a beta-testing process that was conducted in Europe, Australia Canada and the United States,” said RCMP Aboriginal Policing Officer Const.

“They’re the first kids west of Ontario to see it.”

Grade 5 and 6 students had their first look at the interactive program earlier this month.

(The program is targeted to Grade 8 students.)

“They were looking for clues and learning how to apply them,” MacLeod said.

“I let them use FLIR (forward looking infrared equipment) during one part of the game.”

Once the students solve a clue, working together as a group, the story is advanced and another clue is presented.

In Ms. Doerksen’s Grade 5/6 Health and Career class this week, students had to look for clues hidden in the pixels of a photograph, where the protagonist’s bank account information was disguised as a snowboarding photo.

oving VAST to Eighth Avenue will place new barriers in the way of their clients’ educational pursuits, Hummingbird Daycare, says chairperson Laurie Hurst.

Hummingbird provides childcare and support services through the Young Parents Program to young parents in Port Alberni.

“We found out about the planned move during the public information meetings, just like everyone else did. We were surprised,” Hurst said.

Hummingbird used to be located on Burde Street by the old Alberni District Secondary School (ADSS) but is now located on Wallace Street behind Wood Elementary School.

The program has helped more than 60 people who have graduated from VAST, Hurst said.

Options the school district could consider include relocating VAST to Wood Elementary or to the Boy’s Project facility on Anderson

Hummingbird’s board of directors has discussed the matter and has requested to meet with School District 70 trustees or at least make a presentation at their next meeting.

Hurst outlined the board’s concerns in a letter to School District 70 chair Larry Ransom.

Transportation is one concern.

Presently, people can walk between VAST and the daycare. The move will force clients to use the city’s bus system. Because transit only runs hourly, it requires them to leave an hour early each from home and school thus reducing their number of hours in the classroom and potentially impacting their graduation, Hurst noted.

As well, many mothers who are clients are still breastfeeding their children. With Hummingbird located close to VAST their education can be combined with

breastfeeding. Moving VAST across town will eliminate this option and potentially prompt young mothers to stay home instead of enrolling in school.

Moving VAST across town will also negatively impact those clients who live on limited incomes.

Many VAST students already live near the daycare and VAST. Only one client out of 13 has a car. Those clients also access services such as doctors, dentists, public health unit and the income assistance office. If VAST moves then clients will spend more time on the bus getting to and from daycare and VAST, and may choose instead not to go to school.

VAST and daycare officials have worked for 20 years to remove barriers to educational success for their clients, Hurst said.

“It is very difficult to see that more barriers are being created by the relocation of VAST to the Eighth Avenue (Elementary) School location,” Hurst noted.

A crew member aboard a freighter is in hospital after falling from a stairway on the outer deck of his ship at Port Alberni’s deep sea port terminal.

The accident happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

A crewman aboard the vessel was walking down a 15-foot flight of stairs on the outer

deck when he slipped and fell eight to 10 feet onto the deck, Port Alberni Port Authority Harbour Master Steve Baxter said.

bring the boxcars to Port Alberni.

The question right now is how sound the footings are in the trestles along the Port Sub. “Those trestles are designed for 200 tonnes. We’re bringing 35 tonnes over and we

know there wouldn’t be an issue,” Grist said.

The BC Transit Authority has approved a plan that would allow the IHS to transport 35-40 tonnes over the Port Sub, he added.

Not only would they be able to bring the boxcars over the line, such approval might also allow them to one day run a 45-tonne locomotive hauling the Arrowsmith Explorer tourist train from the train station to Loon Lake.

The IHS hopes to bring the boxcars to the Alberni Valley next spring.

It will take a week to prepare the tracks and another week to bring the cars across, he added.

More savings, better workflow and more engagement are what downsizing to four councillors and a mayor in Port Alberni would do.

Coun. Rob Cole advanced a notice of motion at the Feb. 24 meeting, asking council to consider a referendum that would ask citizens to downsize city council from six councillors and a mayor to four councillors and a mayor.

Council will consider the motion on March 10 at its regular meeting.

Cole pointed to the District of Lanztville which is

considering reducing its council size from six councillors to four plus a mayor.

Lantzville Coun.

Jennifer Millbank said councillors brought forward a motion in February to reduce the size of council from seven to five. Millbank says the rural council’s make up is an “anomaly” thanks to its incorporation as a district. While Lantzville is the size of a town which only requires a total of five people at the council table, its geographic area and designation as a district requires it to elect seven.

Cole has worked on council with six other people for the last two years, and he’s convinced a change

can work. “I think that a smaller council will be more focussed and be more engaged,” he said. “Sometimes more minds can cloud the vision.”

Lantzville has a population of 3,807 and covers an area 27.87 square kilometres.

Port Alberni has a population of approximately 17,000 and covers an area of 19 square kilometres.

The move breaks from the norm and thinks outside the box, Cole said. “Just because it’s been a mayor and six councillors for all this time doesn’t mean that it has to stay this way,” Cole said.

John Douglas said.

“The more councillors there are, the more contribution to the discussion of ideas there is,” he added.

“More councillors also ensure that the diversity of interests in the Valley are represented. We would lose some of that diversity with fewer councillors.”

Choice at the council table Grizzly bear hunt isn’t going away The District of Lantzville is on the cusp of allowing the electorate decide how much representation they want at the council table.

Lantzville council took the first step toward a referendum on Monday, voting to move foward with a bylaw that could reduce the size of council from seven to five. There is still a chance council could nix the bylaw and leave the issue dead in the water, but allowing referendum to happen would be the right move.

It could also be the ticket to inspiring more people to get engaged.

The number of councillors Lantzville has is decided by the province’s Community Charter, so while the community is the size of a town that only requires five representatives, its designation as a district requires seven.

A referendum would give people the chance to decide for themselves how many politicians a community of 3,600 needs and whether they are prepared to spend the money to keep their representatives.

Putting the power to decide in the hands of residents could give people another reason to head to the polls this year.

And if the bid to reduce council’s size is successful, perhaps voters will make a greater effort to return to the ballot box in the future.

There is concern from referendum opponents that the district would lose broad representation and the ability to make good decision with a smaller council.

But, as resident Hans Larsen said, good representation doesn’t have a number attached to it. Lantzville isn’t going to see better decisions or more progress just because of council’s size. It is the quality of those who sit at the table that matter.

Perhaps by reducing the number of people representing the community, voters will be encouraged to choose who they elect.

ICTORIA – A littlenoticed protest tent sprouted up on the rain-soaked B.C. legislature grounds earlier this month.

Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver spoke, asking whether B.C. residents would tolerate trophy hunting of killer whales.

That would be a federal matter, but the point is vividly made about the onset of B.C.’s traditional spring grizzly bear hunt.

It’s bigger this year, with Kootenay and Chilcotin wildlife management regions reopened after closures were enacted to preserve grizzly populations. In all, more than 1,000 grizzly bears are up for grabs. As with limited-entry hunts for deer and other animals, only about a third of those hunts are successful in an average year.

The rally was sponsored by the Coastal First

Nations Great Bear Initiative, the partnership with U.S.-directed environment groups Sierra Club, Greenpeace and ForestEthics that has become so influential in B.C. affairs. It produced a survey showing that 88 per cent of B.C. residents oppose trophy hunting, and its California experts calculate a 10-fold increase in value when bear hunting gives way to bear watching.

The Raincoast Conservation Society has bought up half a dozen guiding territories on the remote B.C. coast. Combined with government restrictions, more than half the coast is now off limits to bear hunting. Naturally, activists want the whole province shut down.

Wildlife management is the responsibility of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson.

He’s heard plenty from all

sides and he maintains that bear watching and bear hunting will continue to coexist in B.C. Thomson has just introduced legislation to permit hunting guide territories to be operated by corporations as well as individuals. This is a longsought change, allowing First Nations companies and others access to bank loans to expand the industry.

Nonresident hunters are required to hire a licensed guideoutfitter. Resident hunters pay $32 for a one-year hunting licence and $80 for a grizzly bear tag. NonCanadians pay $180 for the licence and $1,030 for a chance at a grizzly.

Hunting in general is making a comeback in B.C. Ministry data show hunting licenses had declined to 85,633 in 2006, but recovered to reach 97,828 by 2013.

Another program, Becoming an Outdoor Woman, has helped revive hunting and camping as a family activity, he said.

Growing up hunting in northeastern B.C., I was taught not to shoot anything I’m not prepared to eat. I also remember the struggles to protect caribou and other endangered prey species that at one time had B.C. biologists resorting to shooting wolves from helicopters.

The reopening of grizzly bear territories is marketed to urban residents as a horrible crime against nature.

In fact, it’s a sign of increasing population.

Problems in B.C. wildlife these days include the fragile mountain caribou herds of the Kootenays, which have been subject to intensive management including relocation of animals. The ministry has also begun a five-year study of declining moose populations.

As with many B.C. issues, there’s a cartoon version sold to impressionable city dwellers, and then there’s the truth.

I am delighted with the news that Southern Rail is serious about upgrading the rail line to Port Alberni and that they are approaching Compliance Energy regarding the transportation of coal from the proposed Raven Mine.

Nice to see some real dollar figures for the upgrade and not those inflated figures put forth by the truck lobbyists.

Chris Alemany has numerous times shown the efficiency, environmental and safety benefits of rail over trucks for bulk commodities. Yes safety, despite the negative press one reads regarding recent high profile incidents, rail is still far safer than road.

I for one would rather see one train per day than an additional 70 trucks on our highway.

By 1998, when I retired, close to 7,000 railcars a year were coming over the “hump” to the paper mill and yet within three years, thanks to some very poor decisions by Norske and RailAmerica

these loads were transferred to trucks on our subsidized highway. I am sure if the E&N Railway were upgraded for transportation of coal, containers or other bulk commodities to our port you would see Catalyst Paper also reverting to rail for import of clay, latex and export of paper.

Let us hope some of these projects move forward so that Port Alberni can thrive once more.

We have the technology to make these projects environmentally safe and we must insist that they do so.

The paper mill in 1969 was an air and water polluter, yet within 15 years there was tertiary water treatment discharging water so clean that we entertained raising tilapia in the warm water and you no longer needed car washes to remove particulate from your vehicles.

Let us keep our rail line intact, our children will forever thank us.

Embrace Olympic ideals To the Editor,

Scientific teams at CERN’s particle accelerator employ massive amounts of electrical energy in a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets and smash atoms into their elementary particles in order to unlock the secrets of the universe.

Athletic teams around the world expend large amounts of biological energy in sporting activities associated with the five Olympic rings and push the limits of mental stamina in order to unlock the potential of the human body.

Mankind’s boundless curiosity, incredibility creativity and dogged determination --- if benevolently focused --- are mankind’s best hope for our future.

The core values of the Olympic movement are excellence, friendship and respect. The motto is Citius Altius – Fortius, which is Latin for Faster – Higher – Stronger. After being exposed to two weeks of passionate competition, golden smiles and touching tears, one might wonder why world leaders don’t embrace the Olympic spirit and join together to

pursue international peace faster; raise standards of justice higher; and grow iinterpersonal relationships stronger.

There is, however, a dark reality behind Sochi’s dazzling makebelieve spectacle.

President Vladimir Putin was compelled to promise his Winter Games would be secured by a “ring of steel” and 40,000 security personnel.

The Olympic flame was officially extinguished at the end of the closing ceremonies but the flame of hope will burn forever.

Where were comparisons?

Although I’ve been more interested in recent news reports from Kiev rather than Sochi, I would never rain on anyone’s Olympic parade. I do however have an observation on the Western media commentary.

The television, radio and print reports I followed from Canada, USA and England definitely appeared to accentuate the negative surrounding certain non-sporting aspects of what they

referred to as Mr. Putin’s Games.

Maybe the biggest hullaballoo surrounded the arrest, treatment, short detention, and release of a group of balaclava-wearing selfdeclared anarchists -- a punk band with the beguiling name of Pussy Riot.

The arrests were made by Russia’s Cossack Militia. As a group, Cossacks are famed as horsemen, so it would follow that Cossack Militia could be viewed as a mounted police in terminology that’s familiar in Canada.

From my chosen perch outside the box which is situated way out in left field, I remembered what happened on Day 2 of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, when a group of balaclava-wearing selfdeclared anarchists called the Black Bloc rioted in downtown Vancouver, breaking several storefronts, etc.

Their disruptive mayhem was allegedly in protest against huge government funds spent on the 2010 Games, but I didn’t hear a single comparison from any media outlet.

Can Toyota’s Tundra ride alongside heavyweight brands like Ford, GM or Ram?

is a step up from the lower trims but not nearly as supple and luxurious as the new batch of interiors from Ram and GM. Those trucks, in particular, have almost luxury-sedan interiors that make the driver forget they are in a truck. The Tundra, in comparison, is a bit stark, featuring a hard, simple plastic dash and door pieces that don’t compare. The centre screen is smaller than many competitors are, and the screen embedded in the instrument cluster is small. What has been improved is the overall layout of the centre console. The back seat is massive and flips up with just one hand to make room for interior storage. I found the last Tundra to have a very high seating position that limited headroom. This new 2014 seems to have a better seating position, no longer crimping headroom for taller drivers.

Drive Powering the Tundra are two V8 gasoline engines.

The base model has a 4.6L V8 with 310hp and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. The larger 5.7L has 381hp and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. This is one area that the Toyota cannot compete; there is no V6 offered and no diesel (Ram only), which the domestic makers do offer. By limiting the available engine options and not having a heavy-duty model that will certainly diminish the

number of domestic buyers willing to give Tundra a try. On the road, I was surprised at just how rough the ride is in comparison to the all-new GM trucks, which really are like driving a big sedan. I would also place the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 a very close second in ride comfort.

The Tundra is choppy on rough roads and the noise level is on the high side. Toyota claims to have improved ride quality on this refreshed 2014 model but I am not a fan of the ride.

Verdict The Tundra is a capable truck. When equipped it can tow up to 4760 kg, which is on the high side in this class.

What surprised me the most was the real “trucky” ride. I have had extensive seat time in all three domestic brands over the past year and I have to say that they are best sellers for a reason – the refinement is rather dramatic.

Looks As part of the 2014 redesign, Toyota went about setting up a slightly different look for each of its trim levels. Sold as an SR5, Limited and Platinum, each has a variation of the oversized front grille.

The wheel openings are now larger and squarer, framing wheel sizes ranging from 18-inches on the SR5 and Limited and 20-inches on the Platinum.

The Tailgate has a soft open feature, stopping it from slamming down, that is fantastic but there is no side step or ladder into the bed the way Ford and the new GM trucks have. Sold as a regular car, double cab or Crew Cab, there is a model for most buyers.

Las Vegas, Nevada – Volvo is hitching some of its revival hopes to a wagon – the 2015 Volvo V60 Sportswagon.

Its grille is clearly all-Volvo but those typically boxy looks that characterized the make from your dad’s day are gone.

In looks it’s a design variation of the S60 sedan and it will be a welcome sight for loyalists of the Swedish brand, having witnessed the demise here of the V50 and midsize V70 wagons. The wagon featured recently along with the S60 and XC60 crossover at a launch event in the Nevada desert.

The Volvo execs present proudly talked about their new Drive-E powertrains, developed thanks to the megabucks available now that the company is owned by the Chinese Geely Automotive.

Ford ownership may now be retreating in Volvo’s rearview mirror but it is still beholden to the US manufacturer for the platforms upon which these three 2015 models ride. That will change later this year when the full-size XC90 crossover is set to sit

atop Volvo’s so-called Scalable Product Architecture platform.

Model year 2014 saw a refresh of all three midsize Volvo models showing in the desert so this was truly about the new engines.

The Drive-E family of gas, diesel and hybrid (the latter not yet, but soon) engines are built around a single, 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant.

It’s a brave gamble, worthy of Vegas, when you ponder the XC90 relying on such a small engine.

Asked if this were a safe bet, the Swedes just smiled and promised the performance of the four-cylinder configuration will equal their big brothers by using such technologies as direct fuel injection, turbocharging, supercharging and . . . electrification.

Here in the Great White North, just the two gas engines will be offered initially – the new turbocharged T5 pumps out 240 horsepower, while the turbo’ed and supercharged T6 adds another 62 horses.

The base front-wheeldrive V60 T5, with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, will set you back $39,800.

Volvos have never been cheap. The other three Sportswagons will continue to use existing powerplants, six-speed automatic transmissions and Haldex all-wheel-drive systems.

Did a little shopping off the strip in the XC60, which came into its own, its cavernous rear swallowing up my bulky purchases.

I’ll reserve comments on the crossover until I’ve had a chance to put it through its paces in BC. However, I got much

more seat time in the V60 and S60 (S60 with T5 $37,750. T6 $42,850), taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Valley of Fire state park and Red Rock Canyon.

The T5-equipped wagon is a smooth operator in performance and ride.

And while you won’t burn rubber at the green light, it will take off when necessary . . . not that we got any chance to pass in the low speed limit state park!

Volvo says it will hit 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds if given the lead foot treatment.

(The T6 in sedan tells a slightly racier story. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating but only a little and I look forward pressing the pedal to the metal where I can legally do so.)

better accounting of City of Port Alberni projects which incur budget surplus positions is in order, Coun. Jack McLeman said.

At council’s Feb. 24 meeting, McLeman said the city needs a system to track completed projects that have surplus budgets, and to make the process public “so if it (money) moves we can follow it,” he said.

The motion arose as a result of a letter and presentation to council by Alberni resident Neil Anderson.

Earlier this year, Anderson questioned city council after the Parks and Recreation department brought up the idea of using money left over from

Anderson felt there was some confusion at the time over whether the surplus funds could be used in this manner.

In his presentation on Monday, Anderson said that council should have a clear policy about surplus monies from projects that come in under budget, and that council should do more with his request than just receive it.

Surpluses are earmarked for general revenue, but a policy about them “would give a clear picture to the public” of what happens with specific surpluses.

City manager Ken Watson said that the city’s audit committee already performs this function. The committee examines, among other things, project surpluses.

Its deliberations are public, and in another layer of transparency any subsequent recommendations are reported to council.

Watson was tasked with developing a policy to track surplus funds from budgeted projects.

“We think it’s transparent but we still don’t know where the money goes,” McLeman said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

After a long wait the repairs to the McLean Mill tailing pond and dam are set to start.

Port Alberni city council awarded the $204,000 contract to do the work to B Berry Enterprises. The cost was half of what the city originally estimated. The balance of the work will be underwritten with a federal grant obtained by West Coast Aquatic, and with by city taxpayers.

In October 2013, Federal Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea gave $249,965 to WCA for the repair of Kitsuksis Fishway.

The work hasn’t been approved by the province, which ordered the dam be replaced when the berm was found weakened.

The dam is built across Kitsuksis Creek at McLean Mill.

It creates a pond for log storage below the mill; the pond is also

used as a reservoir for firemen to drawn on in the event of a fire at the mill.

The dam was identified for retrofit in 2009 after safety issues including water overtopping, mill pond sediment, wood rot in the fish ladder and poor equipment condition.

Two options were recommended to deal with the problem: modifying the existing dam or building a new bypass channel.

Option two was recommended by the project consultant and supported by stakeholders.

Work on the creek is important, Kenny

said. Coun. Hira Chopra asked if the plan satisfied the government.

Kenny replied that the project consultant reviewed the necessary documentation and was satisfied that it met the necessary requirements.

Evelyn Mary (nee Malone) May 23, 1918 ~ February 20, 2014 With great sadness, we said goodbye to our mother, Evelyn Mary Boyden on February 20, 2014. She was predeceased by her son, Michael and husband, Henry.

Left to cherish her memory are daughters: Brenda (Rick) Crowley, Patricia Paul, Maureen (Henry) Somers; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

Born in Chalk River, Ontario, Evelyn pursued her career as an RN, which took her overseas in WWII. She travelled west to Port Alberni, married and raised her family. In 1970 the family moved to Nanaimo.

Evelyn enjoyed travel, bridge, volunteer work and was a long-time member of the CWL. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic Church, 301 Machleary St., Nanaimo, BC. Burial in the Nanaimo City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations, in Evelynâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name, may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Friel) drew first blood for the Bulldogs in the first period, but Sooke scored shortly after that to tie the game 1-1.

Corlazzoli (Friel, Ryan Rae-Arthur) took the lead back near the end of the first period, leaving the Bulldogs up 2-1 going into the

second period.

Sooke tied the game with a lone goal in the second period.

Try jump camp at Forbidden Plateau Shred dawgs, take notice! The 2014 JumpCamp sessions are rapidly approaching with the first camp taking place March 1 and 2 up on Forbidden Plateau, in the Comox Valley.

JumpCamp is an all ages and abilities snowboard camp for riders who want to have fun and progress their skills, especially in the park and backcountry.

“JumpCamp provides coaching in the slopestyle discipline as well as freeriding,” said coach Patrick Kitto.

“Our campers are typically recreational snowboarders who want to strengthen their freeriding.

Riders vary in skill from beginners who want to learn how to jib their first rail or hit their first jump, to more experienced riders who want to learn and perfect new tricks,” he added.

The camps run from March 1 through to April 19 (on weekends and during spring break) and are open to all snowboarders. Camps include professional instruction from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost for the weekend is $275.

THE ARTS Celebrate women March 8 Celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 8 with Big Mess, The Travellers, a lively auction and international food concession.

This year’s Women’s Day celebration will take place at the Italian Hall on Sixth Avenue.

The Port Alberni celebration is as unique as its creator, Port Alberni City Councillor Wendy Kerr. She decided six years ago that instead of dwelling on the rights of women, she would emphasize the equality of women. Wendy, in addition to her day job for the past 35 years at West Coast General Hospital, has always taken a lead role in her union and has tirelessly fought wage inequalities on behalf of women doing the same jobs as men.

In spite of the hardships she says Canadian women often have to suffer, Kerr decided that the best way to celebrate this special day is by giving women and their partners a great night out.

Over the years this special event has evolved into something a little more creative and this upcoming celebration is no different. The year’s event takes place at the Italian Centre which lends itself to stage entertainment as well as dancing.

The lineup this year includes the Big Mess, a father and son musical act, plus yet another family group The Travellers, a father and daughters act.

When Vanessa Schoen’s daughter Morgan auditioned for Wizard of Oz last fall, little did Schoen realize what kind of role she would play in one of Portal Players’ most ambitious musical performances.

Five hundred hot glue sticks, countless sheets of craft foam and 88 costumes later, Schoen has been able to breathe again.

Schoen and Stephanie Fortin were co-costume designers for Wizard of Oz. The pair worked off directors Elliot Drew and Denis Levasseur’s vision in creating prototypes for the fanciful Oz costumes.

“It was off Elliot’s design...he expressed his vision of Seuss, Willy Wonka,” Schoen said.

Schoen does not have formal theatre costume training. “It’s 20 years of making elaborate Halloween costumes for my three kids,” she said.

Most of the costumes for Oz were created in her dining room. “We basically pushed my dining room table out of the way. We had my sewing machine and two glue guns set up—and music. There had to be music.”

Schoen’s friend Tania Leger and even Morgan got into the assembly line once Schoen and Fortin got the go-ahead for many of the costumes.

Carrera Schroeder (part of the makeup team) made the Tinman and Lion costumes. “They took on some major role costume making,” Schoen said.

Now that the pace has slowed and Schoen has had the chance to watch the play, she said she would do costuming for a production again.

“Being creative and going OK, here’s the picture in my mind, how do I make it and how do you keep it on their head when they’re dancing?”

The process was no less exciting for Fortin, who has assisted with costuming and dressing in other Portal Players productions.

Fortin, who is schooled in fashion design and merchandising from the Vancouver Art Institute, was the seamstress and dresser for Fawlty Towers, worked on costumes for Reefer Madness and was a dresser for The Attic, The Pearls and Three Fine Girls.

“I learned a lot of new things and I put everything I knew from my sewing into costumes for this one.”

Bill Townsend, a local wood carver and artist, has a unique exhibit showcasing his love of wood.

This type of wood work is called, Intarsia— meaning, “A mosaic in wood”. It is also referred to as “painting in wood”.

Fortin commuted from Nanaimo for her costuming duties; when she wasn’t in Shoen’s dining room she would take her sewing machine and material to her sister Jenny’s house.

“I would transfer everything into her living room,” she said.

Fortin will be sitting in the audience for the finale, so she can see the costumes in play.

“I’ve done a few runway shows in Vancouver but we had to be backstage for those. This is exciting for me.”
