Carey Price brings home Olympic gold Greg Sabatino Staff Writer Just two hours after stepping off a plane in Montreal Monday, Anahim Lake’s Carey Price was mobbed by a throng of reporters — all hoping to catch a glimpse of the gold medal and Canada’s newest Olympic goldmedal goaltender.

A day after capturing gold over Sweden with Canada’s men’s Olympic hockey team and finishing the tournament with two shutouts, a perfect 5-0 record, a .59 goals against average and a 97.2 save percentage — a humble, modest Price simply said he was honoured to be part of such an opportunity.

“It was a complete effort from everybody,” Price told reporters at the Bell Centre in Montreal Monday, the home of his National Hockey League team, the Montreal Canadiens. “No matter what

Canada to a 3-1 win over Norway on Feb. 13, before Vancouver Canucks’ netminder Roberto Luongo stepped in to help the team to a 6-0 shutout over Austria on Feb. 14.

From there, however, the tournament was all Price as he and Team Canada posted wins

over Finland on Feb. 16 (2-1, preliminaries), Latvia on Feb. 18 (2-1, quarterfinal), the U.S. on Feb. 21 (1-0, semifinal) and Sweden on Feb. 23 (3-0, final).

With back-to-back shutouts in the tournament Price now has the fourth-longest shutout streak in Olympic

hockey history.

“That was essentially it [the way I approached the tournament],” he said. “The next save. It came down to getting prepared for each practice, getting prepared for pre-game skate, getting prepared for warmup, getting prepared for the game, and that philosophy is paying off.”

Impaired driving deaths down Tom Fletcher Black Press Roadside suspensions and vehicle seizures for drivers blowing as low as 0.05 per cent blood alcohol have helped cut B.C. drinking and driving deaths by half, Attorney General Suzanne Anton said Monday.

Government statistics show average fatalities from drinking and driving have fallen to 54 a year from a previous five-year average of 112, since the law took effect in Septem-

ber 2010. Anton said the program is so successful that other provinces are moving in the same direction.

Anton wouldn’t comment on court challenges to the program, which imposes penalties on people who test in the “warn” range below 0.08, where they are subject to impaired driving charges.

“If there have to be changes made to it, we will be making those, but the program is good, it saves lives and that’s what’s important,” Anton said.

The “immediate roadside prohibition” program replaced most impaired driving charges with administrative penalties, including a three-day driving ban and a $200 administrative fee for those who blow between 0.05 and 0.08, if the police officer has reason to believe the driver is impaired.

For those who blow in the “impaired” range of 0.08 or higher, police have the option of imposing a 90-day driving ban, a $500 penalty and impound-

ing the vehicle for 30 days instead of laying a charge. Towing and impounding a vehicle can result in a $700 bill, and a $1,400 mandatory “responsible driver program” may also be required before the driver’s licence is returned.

The government terms the measure “Alexa’s Law,” after fouryear-old Alexa Middelaer, who was feeding horses at the roadside in Delta when she was struck by an impaired driver and killed in 2008.

“My dad’s a quiet guy. He’s a man of few words, but he’s always been there for me. My mom, my sister and also my wife — everybody back home in Northern B.C. Everybody’s been so supportive my whole career.”

He added as a kid growing up he never imagined he’d be backstopping Team Canada to an Olympic gold.

“Coming from a small community I never dreamed I’d be in the position I got put in, and it reflects that no matter where you’re from, or how remote, or how far you feel from everything that anything is possible,” he said.

British Columbians, including dozens of Williams Lake residents, along with Mayor Kerry Cook and Coun. Danica Hughes who chose to watch the game in the Gibraltar Room, will likely always remember waking up at 4 a.m. to cheer on Price and Team Canada to a gold medal.

Police briefs Williams Lake RCMP Detachment members responded to approximately 75 calls for service during the weekend. This included the usual disturbances, alcohol related offences, traffic complaints, assaults, etc.

Friday, Feb. 21 At 9:16 a.m. police were dispatched to a complaint of a theft at the Fraser Inn Cold Beer and Wine Store located at 245 Donald Road. The complainant stated that two males came in to the store. One male grabbed a 15 pack of beer and ran out of the store. Police will be reviewing video to identify possible suspects. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Williams Lake RCMP or call Crimestoppers.

At 10:14 a.m. police responded to a report a theft from vehicle on Campbell Road. Two chain saws were stolen from a pick-up truck. The saws are described as a Husqvarna 385 and a Husqvarna 288.

At 8:41 p.m. police responded to a complaint of a bear spraying incident at a residence on 605 Carson Drive. Police attended and located a male who had been contaminated with bear spray. The victim did not know who had sprayed him and was uncooperative with police. Police talked with a second person.

None of the parties involved would co-operate with police consequently no follow-up action could be taken.

New rules proposed for off-road vehicles Angie Mindus Staff Writer The provincial government is one step closer to regulating the use of all off-road vehicles in B.C. Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, announced Bill 13 Monday, which he said addresses environmental and safety concerns surrounding ORVs while aiding in enforcement measures.

In a teleconference Monday, Thomson said the new regulations promise certainty, safety and regulatory structure and will replace the 40-year-old Motor Vehicle (All Terrain) Act. He noted regulation is needed to address environmental and safety concerns surrounding a few “rogue riders” out there.

Thomson deflected questions surrounding a loss of freedom ORV operators have expressed surrounding the new regulations.

“I think what we need to focus on is ensuring that we have a system that helps encourage both sound stewardship in the backcountry, helps us make sure that we protect our critical grasslands and in the process that we have a system that supports the enforcement and compliance, and that we also have a system that ensures that there is safe operations of these vehicles,” Thomson said.

He noted the regulations will apply to all Crown lands and be enforced by existing peace officers, such as conservation officers and natural resource officers.

He said the cost will be a one-time charge of just under $50 per ORV. “The Off-Road Vehicle Act will secure the future of off-road vehicle use in a way that

In future off-road vehicles such as snowmobiles will be subject to licensing and new regulations if Bill 13 passes in the legislature. is self-sustaining, safe and environmentally responsible,” he said.

The act, if passed and brought into force, will: • Establish a one-time registration system specifically designed to integrate with the preexisting structure of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia’s vehicle registry, reducing implementation costs.

ORVs will have to be registered and display a clearly visible number plate before they can be operated on Crown or other public land.

• Allow the development of regulations on the rules of operation (such as wearing helmets), safety standards and conditions of use for a wide range of modern ORVs, including snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles or “quads,” dirt bikes and utility terrain vehicles.

• Assist in identifying stolen or abandoned ORVs, by requiring ORVs to be registered

in a database that is accessible to peace officers at all times.

• Provide officers with more effective enforcement tools to tar-

get the small number of irresponsible ORV owners that endanger others or damage sensitive habitat.

This includes the ability to stop and inspect ORVs for violations, seize an ORV for safety or evidence purposes, and increase the maximum fine for offences from $500 to $5,000.

Included in the proposed ORV legislation is an amendment to the Special Accounts Appropriation and Control Act establishing the ORV Trail Management Sub-account. Thomson said this will help to collect funds to develop and maintain trails.

Thomson said proposed ORV Act is the result of extensive consultation, and represents a fair compromise for all user groups.

Implementation, including registration provisions, is anticipated in the fall of 2014.

Will the pool be closed for a long time?

The amount of time the pool would be closed depends mostly on the result of the referendum.

The proposed project which recommended option for the pool requires several strategies to would occur after a “Yes” vote can be built in two phases so that there is water open for public use most of the time during construction. In the recommended concept, the new leisure pool would be built first and the main tank would remain open during construction.

When the leisure pool is complete, it would open and the main tank would be closed for replacement. This phased process would take between 16-20 months to complete. There would be short periods of time when both pools are unavailable.

This program will prepare you for the Kamloops Spring Triathlon in May 2014.

Swim instruction at the pool will focus on proper technique and steadily building endurance. The cycling component will start with indoor dryland training. Training for the run will begin indoors and move outdoors after the first few weeks. The indoor workouts will focus on building a strong base of strength, cardio and flexibility. No classes during Spring Break.

Carey Price a class act

Promise made, promise kept

I

t will be nice to hear something besides the Olympics on TV. I have mixed feelings about the world’s biggest sports bash. My issue isn’t with the athletes, it’s about the attitude that “my country is better than your country because we won more gold medals.”

We should be proud of our athletes, they are wonderful, but whether they win medals is to do with them, not with our status as a nation. If medals were the criteria, Russia would be the best nation in the world.

The pressure on athletes is a bit much too.

French What would Connection our reaction have Diana French been if, horrors, our men’s hockey team had come in second?

Then there is the humongous amount of money spent by the host country to “outdo” the previous hosts, but that’s another story.

Grumps aside, the Olympics are a fact of life so we might as well enjoy them.

My favourite events are figure skating (especially the dance) and hockey.

The women’s gold medal game will surely go down in history as one of the most notable comeback stories. What a show that was.

Everyone feels good about the men’s game, with a hometown hero in Carey Price.

Carey’s after-game interview on TV was a class act. He’s not only the world’s No. 1 goalie, he came across as a Number 1 person.

Anahim Lake claims Carey and rightfully so, but the whole Cariboo Chilcotin is proud of him. *** The future of the New Prosperity Mine should be known by the end of this week.

One of the concerns over the project has to do with waste disposal. Taseko Mines Ltd. says not to worry, those concerns are based on misinformation.

Time will tell, but two new studies on two different Canadian mining operations tell scary stories about mine effluent. More about that next week.

Standing up against bullies Schools across the country are recognizing today as Pink Shirt Day or Anti-Bullying Day. The designation is meant to shine a light on the difficult issue of bullying, and open the dialogue on how we as parents and community leaders can help children feel supported and confident as they navigate the special, but often difficult years of high school.

Politicians and teachers are all well aware of the dangers of ignoring the problem.

In Canada we have had several tragic tales of teens bullied to the brink of suicide in recent years.

We never want to repeat that, and that is why it is so important to have student leaders in our schools teaching anti-bullying strategies and challenging the norm.

We were recently introduced to a fascinating student at Lake City Secondary School named Donavan Shaw, who we are now introducing to you in this edition of the paper.

Donavan is a 16-year-old Grade 11 student who, after struggling for years with feelings of isolation and depression, came to the realization in Grade 9 that he was gay and bravely shared that information about himself to his peers and eventually his family.

Donavan said he didn’t “choose” to be gay, he just was and shouldering that secret took its toll.

Now openly living his life the way he wants to, eyeliner and all, Donavan is happy and he hopes to help other youth struggling with who they are, whether that’s gay, straight or otherwise.

Donavan’s message is one of acceptance, pure and simple.

Soon Donavan will be taking his anti-bullying campaign to the provincial level after being selected as one of just twelve students appointed to Christy Clark’s ERASE Bullying strategy.

In this prestigious role Donavan will be able to influence policy makers at high levels of government and reach a much wider audience with his important message.

We are certain when Christy Clark meets Donavan, she will be as impressed with him as we were.

At www.erasebullying.ca there is information available for parents and youth, including tips for talking to schools, cyber bullying, a guide to Internet slang for parents as well as what you need to know about youth suicide. The website says that bullying isn’t just a child’s issue, it’s a school and community issue and must be addressed with a school and community solution.

The BC Training and Education Savings Grant invests in our future with a one-time $1,200 grant that can be put towards a RESP to pay for college, university or trades school tuition.

Work continues on the Cariboo Connector program from Cache Creek to Prince George by increasing capacity along this important corridor.

Our government has committed $125 million in funding over the next three years ensuring that construction can start between now and 2017 on priority sections along this vital infrastructure project.

By controlling spending and growing our economy, our government is ensuring our financial position remains balanced for many years to come. Over the next three years we continue to project budget surpluses that will keep our AAA credit rating and economic confidence intact.

Taseko’s seepage model beginning to smell Editor: Mr. Cobb’s letter in the Feb. 14, 2014 Tribune Weekend Advisor presents comments attributed to Dr. John Meech as the reason for the latest delegation’s trip to Ottawa.

Dr. Meech’s review of the tailings storage facility (TSF) seepage rate modelling issue included a personal attack on an employee of Natural Resources Canada, suggesting he was either negligent or incompetent in the performance of his duties as a scientist while working on the New Prosperity Environmental Assessment Review project.

The Fish Lake Alliance believes these statements are unfair and are not supported by the evidence.

A complaint has been sub-

mitted to the Compliance Officer at the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC for their consideration.

The CEAA Registry confirms that Dr. Meech presented on behalf of the Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce as well as the Share the Cariboo-Chilcotin Society.

In his presentation on behalf of the Share Society, Dr. Meech stated he knew a number of the senior management team at Taseko and he considered them personal friends. (ref. CEAA Registry Doc. #754, p. 1).

Dr. Meech’s personal website at jmeechmining.ubc.ca confirms he is a Metallurgical Engineer with a Ph.D. in mineral processing and a masters in mining engineering.

The extensive qualifications

of the research scientist whose competence was challenged

by Dr. Meech are located in the NR Can submission to the Panel. (ref. CEAR Doc. #648, p. 54-60) Dr. Meech’s review also suggests that the operation of a large open pit mine and mill surrounding Fish Lake will enhance the health of the resident fish population.

This conclusion is contradicted by numerous, more qualified experts who presented at the hearing.

In my view, the seepage modelling issue introduced by Taseko last November is a red herring and, like any fish left out too long, it is starting to smell.

And let’s not forget our local paper who can make a story of a fourth-place finish just to acknowledge the hard work of the girls on the team who got player of the game or all-star awards at our tournaments.

Of course parent support has been huge in the success of our team. They are the ones helping to pay, drive and offer encouragement weekend after weekend.

I have been very privileged to be able to coach these girls who commit to 7 a.m. and late night practices three times a week, full weekends from

November through to the end of February and to becoming better players every chance they get.

Every member on this year’s team was on the honour roll and can be found in leadership and peer tutoring classes, as First Nations Role Model Candidates, volunteers and all around role models and positive people in their school and community in a “pay-itforward” fashion.

Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered their time, made donations and cheered us on, helping to make this season such a success.

The Lake City Falcons senior girls basketball team travelled to seven tournaments this season in Valemount, Kamloops, Hope, Vanderhoof, Quesnel, Maple Ridge and Zones in Prince George.

We also hosted a four-team tournament of our own.

Our school board has been put in a position to make cuts year after year to a budget that shrinks and school sports have been hit hard in terms of financial support for travel from the district, essentially putting all the expenses of playing sports with the athletes and their families.

The amalgamation of the two secondary schools has completely eliminated crosstown play, so we are forced to travel to

play (and learn) the game.

The team makes efforts to fundraise and every year we ask the community businesses for their support.

They have continually stepped up to take part in our sponsor-a-player program for our girls to assist with travel and we cannot thank them enough for supporting such a great cause.

Of these sponsors, four of them offered to donate to our home tournament, as well as the season, to make it one of the most giving tournaments in the province.

We were able to offer huge trophies for first and second place, multiple firstand second-team allstars for each team, player of the game awards, juice boxes and oranges for each player in each game, lunch on Saturday, sweets for our con-

New Salvation Army leaders installed in lakecity Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer The new captains at the Salvation Army Corps in Williams Lake say they are happy with the posting.

Captains Ben and Isobel Lippers arrived in January, replacing Captains Randy and Claudine Kadonaga.

“What we have here is every officer’s dream,” Isobel said Friday. “There’s a drop-in centre, dropin programs, breakfast and lunch Monday to Friday, an exercise room and the food bank.”

In fact, the drop-in is the only one of its kind within the Salvation Army, Ben said.

“People who want to look at setting one up in their city or town want to come here and see how this one operates.”

Looking around as a dozen men enjoyed a morning in the drop-in centre, as some played pool, watched a movie, sipped on coffee or did a puzzle, Isobel said it’s the ideal place to come and work with people.

“We may have new ideas coming from the outside, but right now we don’t want to change anything,” she said.

The Lippers love the north.

“In the Salvation Army world, Williams Lake is the dividing line between north and south,” Ben said.

Prior to arriving in Williams Lake, the Lippers were stationed in Regina for a year and a half, looking after a Salvation Army residential care centre.

They started with

the Salvation Army in 1999, first as lay people, then as soldiers, before going to college in Newfoundland to become pastors.

“We also lived in Terrace looking after Smithers and Houston,” Ben said.

Ben grew up in Windsor, Ont. and joined the Canadian Forces, eventually landing in Victoria.

Isobel is from Belfast, Ireland and immigrated to Canada in 1976.

“We’ve moved all over,” Isobel said.

“Our longest home in Canada was in Terrace.”

There are a good team of volunteers helping the staff, but Isobel said she is already looking for more volunteers so that people don’t get burnt out.

She also credited local businesses, organizations and churches with being very friendly and supportive to the Salvation Army.

“It’s just been really nice to come to Williams Lake,” she said.

“And it’s always busy here.”

Income tax volunteers ready to serve Monica Lamb-Yorski Staff Writer Volunteers in Williams Lake are ramping up to help lower income people with their income tax returns.

Williams Lake and District Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Program co-ordinator Surinderpal Rathor said local volunteers are among 18,000 across Canada.

Volunteers receive free training as well as free software from the federal government that is updated regularly to be apart of the program.

“Some of our volunteers are going through the training right now,” Rathor said.

The CVIPP operates under certain guidelines and offers the service for free.

To qualify, however, a single person’s income cannot exceed $30,000. For a couple it cannot exceed $40,000 and for a couple with

one child it cannot exceed $45,000.

“People are allowed an additional $2,500 per additional child,” he added.

Volunteers cannot prepare returns for people with capital gains or loss, selfemployed income, rental income, income

expenses and commissions, people filing bankruptcy or deceased people.

“Everyone should file income tax because of the benefits,” Rathor said. “It gives them access to all the credits. The provincial tax credit, GST, guaranteed income

The 100 Mile House and District Women’s Society is receiving $17,000 in funding.

Anyone wanting to access the service can drop information at the Senior Citizens Activity Centre and the Women’s Contact Society at 51A Fourth Avenue North during operating hours.

They will have to fill out some forms with personal information and authorizing volunteers to proceed with filing the form.

Rathor will be available in person at Sunset Manor on Mar. 4, Senior Citizens Activity Centre on Mar. 6, Glen Arbor on Mar. 11, Salvation Army on Mar. 13 and Seniors Village on Mar. 18.

He will also be at Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society on First Ave. in the Village Square March 20.

All dates will be from 11 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers have the capacity to file the return electronically on behalf of clients, and if people have completed direct deposit information ahead of time, that’s ideal, Rathor said.

This year will mark Rathor’s 39th year of participating in the program.

“Yes I’m a volunteer, but I approach it no differently than a professional,” he said. “I take it very seriously.”

The Committee has developed a survey in order to explore whether there is a demonstrated need for a wheelchair accessible taxi in Williams Lake. Providing access to a wheelchair accessible taxi is one of the strategic goals the Committee is working to accomplish on behalf of the community.

Putting a stop to bullying on Pink Shirt Day… Kerry Vital / Black Press Names such as Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons are sadly well-known to many Canadians. Both teens committed suicide after years of bullying at the hands of classmates. On Feb. 26, Canadians will recognize Pink Shirt Day, a day devoted to preventing bullying and helping children and teens who are being victimized.

For some people, bullying hits very close to home. Tad Milmine, now an RCMP constable, is one of them.

As a child, Milmine was bullied relentlessly by classmates and locked in the basement by his stepmother every day for 12 years. His father, an alcoholic, never tried to help him, even when Milmine’s stepmother verbally abused him.

“I always held out hope that one day an adult would see that I was in the basement and perhaps ‘rescue’ or ‘save’ me,” he says. “No one ever came.”

At 17, Milmine ran away from home and cut all ties with his father and stepmother. Still, he struggled with being extremely introverted and emotional. While he had dreamed of being a police officer for

much of his life, he didn’t feel confident enough to act on that dream. At 33, he finally felt able to take that step and do what he loved after encouragement from an officer he met while playing baseball.

“I never acted on my dream because I truly believed it was just a dream,” he says. “I thought that dreams weren’t meant to be achieved.”

Milmine was moved by the 2011 suicide of Ontario teen Jamie Hubley, who killed himself after years of bullying for being gay and a figure skater, to start Bullying Ends Here, a website that tells Hubley’s story as well as his own. Milmine has travelled all over Canada and the U.S. speaking to students and encouraging them to contact him if they need help. In the presentations, he shares his own story and that of Hubley, and tells the students that he understands what it’s like to be an outcast, and that he too is gay, just like Hubley. He shares this information to point out that he is no different than the people listening to him in the audience.

“I never let my sexuality stand in the way of living out a dream,” Milmine says. “I

never let the negativity while growing up stand in my way.”

Milmine’s presentations are done on his own time and with his own money.

“I always wanted to ‘help’ people and today I am lucky enough to be in that position,” says Milmine. “Youth need to know that nobody can help them if they don’t speak up. You have to share, have to ask for help. Give us a chance to help.”

Sixty-four per cent of Canadian children have been bullied at school at some point, according to the Pink Shirt Day campaign, and 40 per cent of Canadian employees are bullied at the workplace on a weekly basis.

“Pink Shirt Day gets people talking,” Milmine says. “People are talking about it leading up to it, and on the day itself.

You’re going to talk about why you’re wearing a pink shirt that day, and youth are reminded of the resources available to them.”

Pink Shirt Day was started in Nova Scotia by two teenage boys who, after seeing another male student bullied for wearing a pink shirt, decided to gather their friends and all wear pink to school. CKNW AM 980 was inspired by their action, and since 2007 has raised over $650,000 for anti-bullying programs in B.C. through the sale of their pink shirts. Fun cars for singles under $30,000

Yes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand.

A few weeks ago, I recommended five fun coupes for singles, whose base prices didn’t start with a three.

Readers demanded more so here are five more cars that are a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation.

Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these vehicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly.

No really, they are.

Ford’s Focus ST (ST meaning Sports Technologies) is quite the exciting ride.

Truck of the year is tough gas miser

The folks over a GM felt it was time to raise the bar and with this latest incarnation of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

And indeed it took a major step forward by anybody’s estimation. Competition is fierce in the ½-ton pickup market and with heavy concentration on fuel consumption; it’s tough to find a balance between fuel economy and a strong capable truck.

But the Silverado designers achieved that balance and were recognized very publicly for that achievement. The awards presentation at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit saw GM haul away top honors for the Corvette Stingray and Silverado pickup, which were named North American Car and Truck of the year.

You can’t just beef up a suspension and still expect a smooth ride. Chev did: the Silverado utilizes finely tuned shock absorbers that respond to small vibrations and tackle the big bounces

with ease. I admit I had my doubts. Driving the Silverado over a pothole-laden road did change the dynamics of this truck on how it handled but the shocks adjusted themselves perfectly.

The frame mounts at the back of the cab are hydraulic and this helps to control any vibration. The rear axle size has been increased to handle the larger torque output from the engine. Speaking of engines the Silverado offers three engine choices.

The first is a 4.3L V6 with a 285 horsepower and 305 foot pounds of torque. An all-aluminum 5.3L V8 with

355 horsepower and a 6.2L EcoTec V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 450 foot pounds of torque. This engine also has active noise cancellation, very similar to good quality headphones!

The transmission is a six-speed electronically controlled automatic with two overdrive gears. It has an estimated combined fuel economy of 13/8.7 L/100 km. Although my real world numbers were not that close, the transmission undoubtedly helped push a tank of gas a little farther than I expected. Properly equipped, this Silverado can tow up to 5216 kg (11,500 lb) which is impressive for a ½ ton pickup.

The redesigned interior offers more leg room and is easily accessed through the larger doors. Stain resistant cloth seats or optional leather seats are very comfortable. The glove box is a two-piece design and the centre console has plenty of room for files and junk to go missing for years!

The steering wheel controls and other knobs on the

dash are within reachable distance from the driver and larger enough that they can be used while wearing work gloves.

My tester was equipped with Mylink system that basically controls everything.

The voice recognition is easy to use and can respond to normal speech patterns.

Bluetooth capabilities allow easy pairing of any smart phone with very little effort and accessing your music is a breeze.

The rear bumper has steps built into it on both corners of the truck, making the job of climbing in the back an easy task. The tailgate features EZ-lift hardware that makes lowering the tailgate a one handed job.

An available LED lights mounted under the box rails lights up the cargo area and makes every nook and cranny visible. Many innovative improvements were made to this truck to keep up with the consumer demands and the result will help spur Canadian sales.

Honda CR-Z keeps cruising from 2011 to 2013

Honda introduced the world’s first hot-hybridhatch with the launch of its CR-Z for the 2011 model year.

The CR-Z is a stylish, driver-focused, small two-seat hatchback that’s fun-todrive, and it offers great fuel economy. It’s a contemporary take on an older (last sold in 1991) and much loved pocket-rocket called the Honda CRX, Reliability has been outstanding and the CR-Z’s resale value on the used market is above average, a nice bonus for owners. It is based on a chassis shared with the Honda Fit, an undeniably more practical (with seats for 4/5) vehicle option that lacks the style and sporty appeal of the CR-Z. Under its wedge-like aerodynamic design is a lightweight yet rigid structure.

Its tapering roofline leads to an abrupt tail end with a double-window rear hatch.

While the secondary lower glass panel does provide a driver some addition rear vision, overall rearward sightlines are still a drawback.

Stamps fall in tight CIHL final opener Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Williams Lake Stampeders will need to take advantage of a perfect Central Interior Hockey League playoff final record at home dating back to 2009 if they want to put away the Smithers Steelheads this weekend.

The Stampeders gave up two quick goals late in the third period Saturday allowing the Steelheads to swim away with a 3-2 home-ice victory in game one of the best-ofthree CIHL playoff finals.

Opening the scoring in the contest was Williams Lake Stampeders’ forward Jassi Sangha, after a setup from Mike Simoes and Jared Kohlen.

Williams Lake extended its lead to 2-0 when league-leading-regular-season scorer Nathan Zurak lit the lamp early in the frame, off an assist from his brother, Aar-

on Zurak. Just 10 minutes later Smithers cut the deficit to one when Mark Arnold helped send the Steelheads into the final period behind 2-1 after beating Stampeders’ goaltender Justin Foote, who stopped a staggering 50 of 53 shots in the contest.

Smithers, with the hometown fans behind them, continued to roll in the third period, holding the Stampeders scoreless.

Randall Groot and Ian Smith both scored for Smithers in the final frame to put the finishing touches on the game-one victory.

Tyler Perreault earned the win between the pipes for the Steelheads, turning aside 28 of 30 shots in the contest.

Falcons third at b-ball zones Greg Sabatino Staff Writer The Lake City Falcons senior girls’ basketball team flew away from the North Central zone championships in Prince George with a bronze medal.

“We hadn’t played any of the teams attending playoffs this season with the exception of Correlieu [Quesnel], who we beat earlier in the season,” said Falcons’ coach Brigette Peel.

Matched up against the North Peace Ookapiks of Fort St. John in their tournament opener last Friday morning the Falcons stored to a 57-45 victory.

Erika Weber led the team in points, dropping 14, while Montana Reid chipped in 12. Player of the game went to Weber and Kaylee Dueck.

“That led us to face the winner of the Prince George Polars and the Correlieu Clansmen,” Peel said.

After the Polars disposed of the Clansemen, despite giving it their best effort, the Falcons fell 57-48. Falcons’ player of the game went to Annie Blois, who scored 11 points, while Reid was the team’s

Shaw receives provincial appointment Angie Mindus Staff Writer A Williams Lake teen has been given the honour of becoming one of only 12 students in the province selected to Christy Clark’s new ERASE Bullying strategy team.

Lake City Secondary School Grade 11 student Donavan Shaw said he was shocked when he heard the good news.

“I was speechless, then really excited,” Shaw said Monday. “I thought, wow, I really get a shot at this, I can make a difference.”

Mike Levitt, district transitions counsellor at School District 27, wrote a reference letter for Shaw, who he has worked with, teaching Grade 7s strategies to cope with bullying for the past year.

“He will be a great ambassador for our school –– he is a good communicator, a good listener and a very confident speaker,” said Levitt.

“But more important than that, he is passionate about wanting change.”

Intelligent and well-spoken, Shaw does well in school and says he’s very happy with his life today, but it hasn’t always been that way.

He is one of only a handful of openly gay students in the local school district and is currently president of the Gay Straight Alliance at LCSS. “I felt really isolated and alone, and I felt really guilty and bad about myself,” Shaw recalls of the years leading up to when he finally admitted to himself, and then others, that he was gay.

“It was tough with my parents.

I came out to my peers way before my parents, but they’re more accepting now,” Shaw said.

“As soon as I came out it was such a relief –– it bears a weight you don’t realize until its gone.”

Shaw feels strongly it’s his responsibility to share his knowledge and experience with others, to teach students, and adults for that matter, that acceptance is the key to a better life for everyone.

He said being selected to the ERASE Bullying team will help him achieve that goal.

“It allows me to take my role to a greater level. I can help so many other people now.”

Shaw said he hasn’t received all the instructions from the ministry yet, however, according to previous government news releases on the anti-bullying team, the students are expected to provide advice and insight directly to Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Peter Fassbender on the provincial bullying strategy.

Shaw said sadly there are only seven members in the alliance due to fears of being bullied or worse, but that in fact one out of every 10 people is homosexual according to statistics.

In regards to why he feels so passionately about living his life out of the closet, Shaw said the sense of freedom to be yourself is something everyone has a right to feel.

cerns that he could be the target of violence by choosing to live openly gay.

“I’ve come to the conclusion that if it does happen, maybe it’ll be worth it. I’ve been given this knowledge and I feel like to have to give it back.”

According to the government, ERASE Student Advisory’s first task will be to develop social media guidelines for school districts.

These will provide direction for students, parents and educators on how to use social media ethically and responsibly. Two adult subject-matter experts will be available to support the students in developing the guidelines.

In June 2012, Premier Christy Clark created ERASE Bullying (Expect Respect And a Safe Education) to help prevent, identify and stop harmful behaviours by children and adults — whether online, at school or in the community following.

Clark launched the program following several high profile incidents of teen suicides as a result of bullying.

The pledge from the government is that every child deserves an education free from discrimination, bullying, harassment, intimidation and violence.

The Women’s Contact Society will be celebrating International Women’s Day with a film, discussion and dessert night. The film Miss Representation written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power.

Watoto choir helps orphaned children The beautiful voices of the Watoto Children’s Choir will be raised in Williams Lake once again this Thursday evening, Feb. 27.

Watoto’s 2014 Canadian tour marks the 20th anniversary of the Watoto Children’s Choir and features a brand new show titled Beautiful Africa: A New Generation, an evening of vibrant, original African music, dance routines and life-transforming stories.

The concert takes place at Cariboo Bethel Church starting at 7 p.m.

Since the program was established in 1994, 65 Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled in Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Europe as ambassadors for the millions of children in Africa, orphaned by HIV/AIDS, war and poverty.

Each of the children singing with Watoto Children’s Choirs has suffered the loss of one or both parents and lives in one of three Watoto Villages in Uganda, Africa, says Karen Shepherd of Watoto Canada.

Currently, she says Watoto cares for almost 3,000 children who were rescued as orphans by social workers, nurtured and cared for by

The choir raises awareness and funds to help fellow orphans in Uganda become leaders in their country. loving moms, educated by teachers, healed physically and emotionally by caring doctors and counsellors, spiritually guided by pastors, and supported by generous sponsors and friends from around the world.

“It took a community to raise each one of these children,” Shepherd says. “To date, 159 of these children have come full circle through the program and are now productive citizens.”

Between the ages of seven and 12, she says each child living in a Watoto village is given the opportunity to travel internationally with a choir.

Each choir is composed of 22 children,

plus a director, co-director and six “aunties” and six “uncles” who are young adults who are each responsible for the care of two or three of the children.

She says the children learn about other cultures on the tour and also keep up with their school lessons.

The choir’s 2014 Canadian tour began Jan. 12 in Victoria and offers testimony of the new generation of leaders emerging out of the Watoto Children’s Villages program.

One of those success stories is that of the choir’s co-director Maria Namubiru, who was orphaned at age seven when both of their parents died within a year of each other.

Maria, along with her sister and brother were taken in by an uncle who was already struggling to keep a roof over his own family.

Shepherd said Maria was one of the first groups of children to receive help with the cost of food, education and clothing through the program’s initial extended family support program, which has since grown into the Watoto Children’s Villages program.

She said Maria is very, very proud of the help received from Watoto and wanted to give back to the program. Now 24 Maria married choir director Daniel Ogwal last year and the young couple is serving as director and

co-director for the choir group visiting Williams Lake Thursday.

Watoto also cares for 2,100 vulnerable women through its Living Hope program in Kampala and war torn Gulu, Northern Uganda.

This program helps HIV positive single women, returnees from abduction by the Lord’s Resistance Army, and teenage mothers.

While the concert is free, donations are welcome and fair trade items made by women in the Living Hope program will be available for purchase.

The Watoto Children’s Choir’s 2014 Canadian tour officially began in Victoria on January 18 and will perform in 120 communities across Canada over six months.

Highlights so far include recording a music video with the Victoria based band Towers and Trees and had singing at the Vancouver Canucks home game in Vancouver, January 25.

Unfortunately, the choir was also shaken by a robbery during a stop in Nanaimo Jan. 28 when thieves robbed the choir’s bus of equipment and the previous night’s donations while the bus was parked overnight in a hotel parking lot.

Your Preschooler and… Numbers Being familiar with numbers, time, distance and shapes will help your child develop the math skills they will need at school. Remember that, like all learning, numbers should be fun and connected to real life.

Many children learn better by counting the stones on the beach or apples in a grocery bag than by looking at flash cards.

Typically, three-year-olds will be able to count to ten.

Most preschoolers will be able to sort objects into groups and to name different shapes (such as triangle and square).

At age three children are generally beginning to understand time, measurement like weight and height, and distances like near and far.

Try some of these with your preschooler: 1. Count as a part of everyday routines with your child: “Please get me six spoons for lunch.” “How many letters are in the mailbox?”

2. Discuss the order of events to help your child understand time: “This morning at 10:00 we are going to the store. After lunch, you will have time to play.”

3. Make a calendar with your child. Write in special days (his or her birthday, the trip to the library) and have your child mark off each day until it arrives.

4. Help your child learn your family’s phone number and address.

5. Collect objects (buttons, stones, blocks) and sort them by shape, colour or size.

6. Talk about shapes. Identify shapes in the world around you and talk about them with your child: “That window is square.” “That cookie is round.”

7. Start a growth chart for your child. Talk about the ideas of weight and height.

8. Ask your child to guess how many cups of water it will take to fill a pitcher or bowl then fill the pitcher and check the guesses.

9. Use words that give direction when asking your child to do something: “Look under the box.” “Put it beside your bed.”

10. Make a counting book. Glue groups of small objects (like buttons or feathers) on pieces of paper and then bind the pages together to make a “book”.

When browsing through the book together, help your child count the different groups of objects.

Obituaries Josef “Joe” Petrasek

It is with love and reluctance that we say goodbye to our mother, Flo, who passed away Feb.18, 2014 in Williams Lake.

Flo was born on July 9, 1932. She lived her life with strength, courage and determination, but mostly with love, generosity and laughter.

Her creativity, intelligence and energy ensured that she experienced a life well lived.

Flo was predeceased by husband Dave in 1989.

She will be forever loved by her children Annette Ellis (Peter), Florence Bettschen (Len), Jerome Beauchamp (Denise) and Jeanine Saari (Bill), grandchildren Christopher, Michelle, Aimee, Natalie, Kiira, Eric, Tracey, Ashley, Raeyden and great grandchildren Kohl, Konrad, Chloe, Cassidy, Caleigh and Michael.

A Celebration of Life will be held July 5, 2014.

The Xatsull First Nation Natural Resources Department is seeking a full-time Natural Resources Coordinator to coordinate Xatsull land use through the effective development, provision, and evaluation of natural resource programs and services in the community, according to the organization’s vision, objectives and strategic direction.

Under the supervision of the Program Manager carries out the mandate to protect and implement Aboriginal title and rights, building on and using the established capacity in land and resource management to operate programs and develop new initiatives. As an advocate for sustainable and healthy communities, the Natural Resources Coordinator supervises the referral program to develop plans for land use.

Qualifications Diploma or certificate in Natural Resource Management or equivalent combination of training and experience Experience: • Two years natural resource management in a similar or related position • Experience supervising staff and implementing budgets TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time 35 hours per week; travel and irregular work hours may be necessary.

We are really excited about the trip.

Next year the school trip will be to Scotland and Ireland and we are having an informational meeting at Lake City Secondary, WL campus on Wednesday, March 5 at 6 p.m.

The trip is open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12 and friends and family.

We have taken past graduates, moms, dads, aunts, and even grandmothers on our tours!

These lands were once home to ancient Celtic and Gaelic tribes and today their history blends into modern day.

Step into the Middle Ages on Edinburgh’s Royal Miles and explore the castles in Edinburgh and Stirling — and learn about the battles of the past.

We will visit the Robert Burns Museum and experience the Scottish life...try on some kilts and maybe bring some home!

We will walk under the towering spires of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Dublin and look for Leprechauns in this lush, green land!

We will visit the Book of Kells at Trinity Col-
