An arrest has been made after a Vernon senior was robbed. Police took a 27-year-old woman into custody in relation to an incident at the CIBC bank machine on 30th Avenue Feb. 10. “She is known to police,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson. During the incident, an 83-year-old man was withdrawing money from the bank machine when someone allegedly reached around him and grabbed the cash. The man grabbed the suspect’s jacket, but the suspect was able to get loose and leave the building. Police went over video surveillance and a description of the suspect was issued to residents. “Numerous people called in and said, ‘I think it’s so and so,’” said Molendyk. The 27-year-old woman was released and is expected to appear in court at a future date. Specific charges have not been determined. While he was following the suspect outside of the bank, the senior slipped on some snow and fell, cutting the back of his head and injuring his shoulder.

Gloria Hillard (above) checks out the titles in the mystery section at the Vernon library Monday, the first day residents were allowed back in following a flood two weeks ago. One-year-old Gabrielle Friesen looks for her mom’s approval as she finds some interesting titles in the new children’s corner and story time area in the upstairs of the library, where most titles have been moved. Staff are doing all they can to accommodate residents as a full opening may not be until April.
Crash claims Fulton student
A popular student from Fulton Secondary has officially been identified as the person killed in an accident on the Trans-Canada Highway near Lytton Friday. Dante Tiberius Darkazanli, 15, was a passenger in an SUV which was involved in a fourvehicle collision on Highway 1 about 25 kilometres east of Darkazanli Lytton at about 11:30 a.m. Friday. Darkazanli died at the scene of the collision. RCMP report one of the four vehicles involved
in the crash was a tanker truck and first responders had to deal with a fire involving this truck. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate the accident. At Fulton Secondary Monday, counsellors from the Vernon school district, along with North Okanagan Youth and Family Services, were brought in for grieving students. “We read a statement out to our students and had many counsellors on hand to support the students. Those counsellors were used,” said Fulton principal Ken Gatzke. “Dante was a well-known student in our school and a wonderful student.” Staff and students from the school have also been a shoulder for Darkazanli’s family to lean on.

An older brother of the Grade 10 student attends Fulton. A step-brother of Darkazanli is not a student at the school. “We’ve also been trying to support the family, the mom and dad, and they’ve been fantastic at working with the school,” said Gatzke. “They have appreciated the support the school has tried to provide the family and also the rest of the school. “It was important for the family to know we’ve been doing a good job supporting all of the kids at school.” A celebration of Darkazanli’s life is set for Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home (4303 Pleasant Valley Road). The service will be open to anyone who wishes to attend.
