The majority of Burnaby teachers don’t feel their students get the attention they need, says a recent survey by the Burnaby Teachers Association (BTA). Of those surveyed, 75 per cent felt their students didn’t receive the individual attention they need, said BTA president James Sanyshyn. As for class composition, 81 per cent of teachers said there is a wider range of needs than in past years, and 66 per cent have more special needs in their classes than in previous years. The BTA point to the survey results in calling for the provincial government to give up its appeal of the B.C. Teachers Federation’s recent court victories. The court judgments order the province to restore the teachers’ right to negotiate class size and composition in their contracts. “It is time for the government to move on. Apologize. Fix it. Off to B.C. Games, with Olympic dreams Burnaby girl on mission for gold at B.C. Winter Games Grant Granger

ggranger@burnabynewsleader.com

When Jenna Velji learned to skate as a tyke she got a taste of hockey and she knew right away it was the game for her. Velji’s parents tried to steer her toward figure skating, but she was having none of it. “I was totally into hockey. No ringette or anything like that. I knew hockey was my sport,” Velji recalls. Velji’s parents relented and signed her up to play in the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association. Good decision. This week the 13-year-old Moscrop secondary French immersion student is off to Mission to represent Zone 4 (Burnaby, Richmond and Delta) in the 2014 B.C. Winter Games that starts Thursday. Her puck passion has not faded. So much so that she’s been planning how to pack her hockey bag and suitcases for the Games for three weeks.

Kids at school ask her, “Are you dating anyone?” She responds, “Yeah, I’m dating hockey.” “It’s just something you never feel, the way you feel on skates on a daily basis,” says the effervescent Velji. “It’s something you can escape to. The speed, everything, was real cool. I even enjoy bag-skating (when coaches order players to do extended wind sprints).” As a young pup she played with the boys, which freaked her mother out, especially when Velji progressed to the peewee level (11-12 years old) when hitting was allowed. Bodychecks didn’t bother her though. She loved physical play. But life changes. Along with graduating from Marlborough elementary to Moscrop last spring she realized the boys were starting to hit puberty and getting bigger. Really big. The fear of a head injury was real. She’d gained a lot of confidence and lots of friends playing with the boys, but it was time to join an elite girls bantam squad, the North Shore Avalanche.

MarIO BarteL/newsLeader

Jenna Velji is competing in this month’s BC Winter Games, being held in Mission. She looks up to the Canadian women’s hockey team in Sochi for role models.

Bodychecking isn’t allowed in female hockey. She misses the physicality and speed of the boys, but she uses her size (five-foot-four) and her experience playing with the boys to her advantage as a left winger. “I like to take the puck up and down the boards. I’m bigger so it’s easier to grind it out,” says Velji, who admits she has to resist hitting her opponents.

“I have to contain my anger. Every good athlete has to have a competitive edge, and I certainly have a competitive edge.” Her competitiveness landed her a spot on the Winter Games team, even though she is only a first-year bantam player on a team of mostly second-year bantams. Joining the Avalanche also enhances her chances of playing

university hockey. Even though she aspires to play for the national team, she’s got long-range plans outside of hockey. Velji has a fascination with skin and wants to be a dermatologist or a naturopathic doctor. Since she was nine years old she could frequently be found in the kitchen concocting remedies out of herbs. While she prepares to play in Mission, Velji has had her eye on the women’s Olympic hockey tournament in Sochi. Four years ago when the Olympics were held in Vancouver she took in a game between Canada and Finland. “A lot of my role models were on that team,” says Velji singling out Olympic flag bearer Hayley Wickenheiser and Meghan Agosta, who scored two goals against the United States last week. The B.C. Winter Games are all about providing stepping stones to greater glory, such as playing for Canada, for athletes like Velji. • B.C. Winter Games run Feb. 20-23. Visit BCGames.org.

“I never would have believed this could happen,” said Arychuk. “I can hardly sleep at night.” Holy Eucharist priest Bishop Ken Nowakowski, the spiritual leader of B.C.’s 7,500 Ukrainian Catholics, is also following the news from Kiev. He is going there Friday for church meetings, and recalls fond memories of walking in Independence Square and meeting protesters when he was last there in December.

“I’ve never seen such an orderly group of people, tens of thousands of people, they were very peaceful,” said Nowakowski. He saw them set up soup kitchens and assign squads to keep the square clean. He also attended a service in a tent on the site of a cathedral that had pHOtO COntrIBUted been razed by police in the Bishop Ken Nowakowski, of Holy Eucharist Cathedral protest’s early days. in New Westminster, visits the protest encampment in “It is shocking,” said Kiev’s Independence Square in December.

Lack of resources ‘increasingly frightening’ ⫸

TAKE NOTICE THAT the City of Burnaby proposes to renew a Business Improvement Area (BIA) for the Hastings Street area. The purpose of the BIA, which has been operated by the Heights Merchants Association since 1994, is to help local business people and property owners to upgrade and promote a local business district to improve its economic viability. The BIA’s services are proposed to include joint marketing, physical improvements, and research studies. It will be designed to benefit the designated commercial area which is generally: 1. Cariboo Hill to offer pre-engineering program Innovative approach would have teachers coordinate, integrate lessons Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

When Greg Bernard was studying to be a shop teacher at BCIT, all his classes were “incredibly integrated.” The drawing he did in drafting class was for the project in the woodworking or metalworking class. The math courses taught related calculations. “I thought that was pretty cool because it really lent a ‘real’ factor to all the work.” Now Bernard is head of the applied skills department at Burnaby’s Cariboo Hill secondary. And after mulling over the idea for years, he’s helping bring that coordinated approach to the school. In September, the school will offer a pre-engineering program. It will be the first of its kind in Burnaby, and perhaps in Metro Vancouver. The Engineering Summit program will see the school’s

The idea is that the teachers will coordinate lessons so they all relate to common projects. For instance, in tech ed the

The math teacher’s lessons would use skills needed for the physics calculations and measurements. And the chemistry teacher could discuss the ideal materials for the car. Engineering Summit will run from grades 10 to 12. Its students will take regular classes but have more assignments and expectations. Students will get more lab time with the shop equipment to build projects that bring those science and math lessons to life. Burnaby school district plans to present the program to local engineering schools, said Bernard. It hopes to gain preferential admission for its graduates, who will receive an Engineering Summit diploma. So far, about a dozen students have applied. Students can apply until spring break. ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Compelling injustice A designated driver is seriously injured when her drunk passenger grabs the steering wheel, causing her to lose control and crash. Compensation for her injuries and losses is assessed at close to $800,000. ICBC denies the claim and a decision released by the court on Feb. 3 affirms ICBC’s denial. The injustice is compelling, and it made headlines. The headlines failed to identify the true source of the problem that denied this lady fair compensation — a failure in legislative drafting. ICBC liability insurance doesn’t come from a traditional insurance policy. It is a creature of legislation. When we buy liability insurance from ICBC, we are not purchasing a policy drafted by the insurance company, we are purchasing a set of protections drafted by our provincial government. Had the exact same words been contained within an insurance policy, the result might well have been different because the court follows different rules when interpreting insurance policies than they follow when interpreting legislation. Our “legislated” insurance policy contains a separate provision specifically allowing innocent victims, not in a vehicle, to recover against a passenger of the vehicle who causes a crash. Had it been a pedestrian who had been injured, he or she would have received compensation from ICBC. By creating this specific protection for non-occupants, those who drafted the legislation excluded occupants from coverage. Had they left that provision out, both occupants and non-occupants would be covered if a passenger causes a crash. The sooner the legislation is amended, the sooner designated drivers can feel protected by the ability to claim fair compensation if injured as a result of their drunk passenger causing the vehicle to crash.

Digital dialogue that’s gone too far Do you know what your washer/dryer is doing right now? There’s an app for that. Seriously. Little did I know, until a friend enthused how she could monitor her laundry machines via her smartphone. If they have issues, they’ll let her know. Some models even let you control the action remotely. Super. Another reason for people to be fixated on their phones. Instead of actually talking to your lunch guest, you can be Tweeting your menu choice, texting your BFF, checking the weather in Bolivia, AND adjusting the fluff cycle on the dryer while receiving a cranky message from the washer that it has a loose button under the agitator. Honestly, in this informationoverloaded world, how much real-time interaction do we really need with our household appliances? Is it not enough to be able to just throw clothes in the washing machine, add soap, push a button and walk away?

Andrew Holota As far as I’m concerned, that’s still a vast improvement over earlier mechanized methods. Back on the farm, my mother used to do her washing with one of those machines that had a wringer mounted above the tub. Other than the automatic agitation, it was a very hands-on operation. If she wanted to talk to the washer, she’d do it in person. Once the laundry was washed, she had to pull the dripping wet items from the tub, and handfeed them into the wringer. The water sluiced into a concrete laundry sink. One pass generally wasn’t enough, so she’d have to pile up the semi-squeezed laundry into a basket, and run it through a second time. I recall at least one occasion where she also fed her fingers into that wringer. Now that

was real-time. Fortunately, the manufacturer had thought of that potential, and built in an automatic release that would pop the rollers apart if the pressure exceeded a certain level … like that of human digits between them. Nevertheless, it was a painful and traumatic event. Anyway, after the laundry was wrung, it was off to the dryer, which was a cable strung between pulleys on two poles outside, otherwise known as a clothesline. Also very manual. Among my vivid childhood memories of the laundry process was an occasion when a particular washing day coincided with my father fertilizing the field next to the clothesline – with chicken manure. When ma went out to gather in her nicely dried laundry, it had been deeply infused with the odour of ripe chicken dung. Back into the washing machine went the entire batch. Some heated words were directed toward the man on the tractor who narrowly avoided getting pinned up on the clothesline himself by the irate

laundry lady. I think there was some farming-versus-domestics policy established at that point to govern my father’s activities, since of course, there was no app to monitor what he was up to at any given point in time. On the other hand, I’m certain my mother felt no need to know his moment by moment pursuits, other than when he was out playing with chicken poop. There were many aspects of life for which we didn’t feel the need for constant updates. I remain of that mindset today. Refrigerator reporting in, sir! All cool here! Nice… punning kitchen appliances. Boss? Teddy the Toilet here. OK, don’t go there! (Hah, I can pun too.) We surround ourselves with mega terra-bytes of information – enough to make one’s brain gag. COMMENT

Let’s shake up health care Re: The family physician dilemma (Column, NewsLeader, Jan. 31) Although I applaud the Ministry of Health and BC Medical Association’s attempts to improve access to family physicians I doubt this effort will make much of a difference at all to the health of our health care system. As a home care nurse I see a variety of issues on a regular basis. First, although you may have a family GP it is near impossible to get in to see them in a timely manner. Second, those with chronic health conditions on multiple medications rarely receive the time they need to be fully assessed. Beyond that we have additional issues such as being able to access GPs on weekend’s and evenings, or to ask simple questions in a quick way—we must make an appointment. I had one patient who became short of breath but

had to wait three days to see her GP. The next day she ended up in the ER. She had a GP, but wasn’t able to see him in a timely manner. As Chris Bryan states he was left waiting for hours while his GP was delivering a baby. I doubt his GP would have had the time to help an elderly person organize their daily regimen. I’d like to propose the BCMA and Ministry of Health consider the use of registered nurses and nurse practitioners, working in a team with family physicians. RNs and NPs have wide scopes of practice as well as a mandate to educate our patients. Can you imagine having the ability to receive education about a chronic health condition or a nurse to check in and ensure the medications you have been prescribed are effective? Further, why are GPs are

still preforming women’s exams, STI counselling, wound care and immunization practice? These are all things nurses can take care of. Let’s shake things up and do things differently. We need to create a system where the right professional takes care of the right scope. If we do this perhaps we will free up time for GPs to see patients who really need their expertise and thus decrease visits to ER which leads to decreased overcapacity in hospitals and thus those who need them get them. Fun cars for singles under $30,000 Yes, you can buy fun cars for under 30 grand. A few weeks ago, I recommended five fun coupes for singles, whose base prices didn’t start with a three. Readers demanded more so here are five more cars that are a little easier on the wallet in purchase and operation. Disclaimer, you don’t have to be single and willing to mingle to fall in love with these vehicles. In fact, some of them are family friendly. No really, they are.

Ford Focus ST- $29,999 Hot hatch? I think so. Ford’s Focus ST (ST meaning Sports Technologies) is quite the exciting ride. As soon as you sit inside the Ford Focus ST cabin, you’re embraced by Recaro sport seats that hug you and don’t let go. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox that’s then connected to a 2.0L High-Output EcoBoost I-4 engine. The high-output engine puts out 252 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Yes, that’s a herd of horses under the hood, but driving this sport-tuned version of ST is actually quite agreeable in the city.

The return of the fun-to-drive rear-wheel drive sports coupe that’s priced under $30K can be linked to the Scion FR-S. You could also say it is linked with the Subaru BRZ as these four-seater, two-door vehicles were a joint venture product between the two Japanese brands. The FR-S features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine, developed in collaboration with Subaru. It combines Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s D-4S injection system. The result is 200 naturally aspirated horses and 151 lb-ft of torque and can be matched with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The back seats might not be incredibly comfortable for rear passengers but all the festivities are happening up front anyway. continued on page A15

Honda Civic SI (Coupe/Sedan) - $26,245/$26,250

Fiat 500 Abarth - $20,995 Anytime you see a scorpion on something – or in real life – you can count on there being some sort of sting. The Fiat 500 Abarth is no different, except this sting makes you smile. This pint-sized two-door might look somewhat cutesy, but the terrestrial arachnid badging denotes otherwise. Turn the ignition on and the rumble of the dual exhaust comes to life. It’s anything but tame in tone. Put the fivespeed, heavy duty manual transmission into gear and hopefully you’ll be able to make good use of the 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. That’s the kind of power being generated from its 1.4L, MultiAir turbocharged engine. Along with a performance tuned-suspension, performance brakes and 16-inch wheels, this Fiat might be small, but makes up any “size matters” issues with its dynamic performance.

Chevrolet Sonic RS - $23,995 The Sonic RS Hatchback might not be the first choice of “performance” vehicle on your list, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be added. This five-door has some cool features like: a unique RS liftgate-mounted rear spoiler, 17-inch Midnight Silver painted-aluminum wheels, Lane Departure Warning, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrasting stitching and flat-bottom design, and leather-appointed seating surfaces with ‘sueded’ microfibre inserts. That’s on top of seating for five and a powerplant comprised of a 1.4L, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Take the exceptional reliability of Honda, its popular-selling Civic coupe/sedan, lace it with a potent engine and some cool gadgetry and you have the SI trim. Up until only a few years ago, the Civic SI was only offered in coupe format, but that changed in 2007. Those who wanted performance and practicality would be granted access to such pleasures of life. Setting it apart from its tamer siblings is a 2.4-litre engine producing 201 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft of torque. It also comes standard with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and a rear spoiler. Not to mention a 6-speed manual transmission.

Ottawa seeks input on new law to control prostitution

Prosecutors will consider all charge requests from police on a case-by-case basis, while ongoing prosecutions that don’t meet the public interest test may be terminated. Meanwhile, the federal government is embarking on one month of online consultations to seek public comment on how the country’s prostitution laws should be rewritten in response to the decision. “Doing nothing is not an option,” Justice Minister Peter MacKay said Monday. “Our government is concerned about the significant harms that flow from prostitution to communities, those engaged in prostitution and other vulnerable persons.” The Supreme Court gave Ottawa a year to rewrite the laws, which it said currently endanger sex workers and violate their constitutional rights. The law barring anyone from living off the avails of prostitution in effect barred sex trade workers from legally protecting themselves by hiring

Crown counsel have shifted their practice after a Dec. 20 Supreme Court of Canada decision struck down key aspects of the criminal law on adult prostitution. The branch issued a statement that noted the high court decision rendering unconstitutional some offences – keeping or being in a brothel, procuring or living off the avails of prostitution, and communicating in a public place for its purpose – doesn’t take effect for one year, during which time the laws remain in force. Child prostitution offences remain illegal and unaffected by the ruling. The branch’s new guidelines to prosecutors say there’s a continued public interest in prosecuting sex trade buyers for communicating, particularly when they solicit undercover police, as well as charges for both brothel operation and living off the avails when workers are exploited. There’s less public interest justifying charges against sex trade workers for street solicitation or working in a brothel, they say.

The Cottages at Seabright Farm welcome Canadians By Kerry Vital

The Cottages at Seabright Farm, located in Point Roberts, will soon be welcoming buyers, and Canadians are sure to love it. “There’s been unbelievable interest in this project,” says Wayne Knowles, development partner for The Cottages at Seabright Farm. “There are huge lots and great views. There’s nothing better than Point Roberts.”

Point Roberts has long been a popular spot for Canadians, especially those from the Lower Mainland looking for a quick and easy getaway without having to deal with a long drive or a ferry. Just across the border from Tsawwassen, you’ll find a relaxing atmosphere with a charming feel, great weather and plenty of activities to keep you as busy as you want to be. Knowles points out that about 90 per cent of the people who have already registered interest in the Cottages at Seabright Farm are from Canada.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

The Cottages at Seabright Farm is located on 62 acres of direct south-facing waterfront. The cottages are based on Point Roberts’ historical summer cottages and simple farm buildings. “Point Roberts has character,” Knowles says. “It’s totally authentic and small enough to be a true community.” The most exciting part of the cottages will be the attached breezeways that Knowles calls a signature part of the development. A smaller second building can be attached to the first, and perhaps used as a master retreat, guest suite or garage space, among other options. Because of both the elevation and south slope of the entire property, you’ll find a gorgeous view no matter where you purchase. The two-or-more-bedroom cottages will include stone fireplaces, high ceilings, sunny window seats, hardwood flooring, relaxing decks and covered porches. Lots at Seabright Farm will start around $200,000, and finished cottages will start in the low $400,000s. For more information, visit www.seabrightfarmcottages.com or call 1-888-732-6915.

Homes at The Ridge at Bose Farms will incorporate all the beauty of the location, with wide-plank laminate hardwood flooring, nine-foot ceilings and huge decks and patios to give homeowners the best view.

Country-style living at The Ridge at Bose Farms By Kerry Vital

History is all around you at The Ridge at Bose Farms, a new master-planned condominium community with more than a touch of country style. “There’s really something for everybody

here,” says sales manager Nicole Castle. “The homes are priced well and it’s a great location.” The Ridge at Bose Farms is built on the historic Bose Family Farm land, and will be incorporating heritage elements. The former potato and machinery barn is being restored, along with the dairy shed and original Bose family farmhouse. All three will join an entirely new amenity building. The dairy shed will become a garden storage area, located next to the herb gardens and garden plots that will be available for the use and enjoyment of homeowners. The old farmhouse will hold two guest suites, along with a country kitchen and lounge area for smaller gatherings. Meanwhile, the potato and machinery barn will be connected to the new amenity building with a breezeway,

allowing owners to view the original roof framing and new timber plank floor. The second floor of the barn will be perfect for movie or game nights, barn dances and afternoon socials, continuing the traditions of this heritage site, while the first floor can be used as a woodworking shop, craft space or storage. The new amenity building will hold a fitness facility, yoga studio, library, chef ’s kitchen, fireside entertainment lounge and a media room, among other amenities. The one- and two-bedroom homes themselves, ranging from approximately 444 to over 1,000 square feet, take inspiration from the beautiful location, with their two designer colour schemes, wide-plank laminate hardwood flooring, nine-foot ceilings and huge decks and patios for taking

advantage of the stunning views. “From the north, you’ll look out over the Agricultural Land Reserve, the golf course and the North Shore mountains,” says Castle. “From the west, you’ll look out over the ridge or 12 acres of heritage forest to the south.” The kitchens are fit for a gourmet, with stainless-steel appliances, beautiful cabinetry and complementary quartz stone countertops and coordinated ceramic backsplash. Your space is lit with vintage-style schoolhouse or stainless-steel pendant lighting, as well as convenient under-cabinet task lighting. The bathrooms are spa-like and soothing with ceramic tile flooring and surrounds, as well as recessed pot lighting and wallmounted light sconces. The ensuite bathroom features his-and-hers sinks, frameless glass showers (in the two-bedroom homes) and glass accent tiles or a mix of marble and glass mosaic tiles, depending on your chosen colour scheme. The main bathrooms have custom one-piece vanities and elegant floating mirrors. The Ridge is perfectly situated to take advantage of all of Surrey’s best amenities, including shopping, dining, schools, leisure and recreation. Homes start at $162,900. For more information, check out www. theridgeatbosefarms.com, call 604-888-5514 or visit the presentation centre at 16390 64 Avenue, open daily except Friday between noon and 5 p.m.
