Community rallies to help young leukemia patient A fundraiser is planned to support Caden Tellier, 4, and his family

W

hen Krista Tellier took her four-year-old son Caden to the hospital on Dec. 29th with concerns of him having a jaundice skin colouring, she didn’t expect him to be diagnosed with leukemia.

But that’s exactly what happened.

After doing some blood work on Caden, the doctor came out and told Krista that “Something was wrong” with the blood and it “Wasn’t good.”

Krista soon found herself and Caden whisked away via ambulance to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

“It was shocking,” said Krista, adding that at the time she had little information from the doctor before arriving at Stollery.

Caden was released from the hospital on Jan. 17, but his recovery is just beginning. He and his mother make weekly trips to Edmonton for treatment.

While the Telliers, like all Canadians, enjoy free healthcare, it’s a common misconception that all such bills are covered. Krista still has to pay for things like Caden’s medication and fuel for the weekly trips for treatment. Those bills can add up.

So, Krista’s friends Stacey McTrowe and Aimee Robinson began organizing a benefit for her and Caden. They planned a modest fundraiser with the goal of raising about $1,000 through a bake sale and small silent auction items.

Then, Lacombe Minor Hockey got wind of Caden’s situation. Caden was just about to begin his amateur career with Lacombe Minor Hockey before being diagnosed and now will have to wait at least three and a half years before doing any team sports.

Lacombe Minor Hockey rallied around the cause begun by McTrowe and Robinson, putting them in contact with others who may be able to help. From there, local schools heard and did the same. McTrowe said the effect quickly snowballed.

“What happened after that, is like, crazy,” said McTrowe. She added that she was overwhelmed by the support that was being shown for the small fundraiser she and Robinson had planned.

Needless to say, the benefit has outgrown its humble beginnings.

People are still jumping on board to help and Robinson said straight donations received have already doubled the initial goal before the benefit has even been held.

Leto’s Steak and Seafood has offered to host the benefit and provide space free of charge. Entertainment has also been arranged for the evening free of charge.

Items for silent auction, like signed sports memorabilia and tons of gift cards have been donated as well and there will also be raffles held. McTrowe added that the fundraiser will be set up so those who wish to spend either or a lot, or a little in order to help and have some fun will be able to do so.

Krista said she has been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster of late, with the news of her son having cancer, to the overwhelming news of her friends planning a benefit for him. She said learning about the benefit was also a bit of a shock.

“Actually, I didn’t find out for awhile, they were going to keep it a secret.”

She added that the event soon grew too big for McTrowe and Robinson to keep it from her however and she learned of it when she was contacted by Lacombe Minor Hockey asking for a photo of Caden and permission to distribute it in order to promote the benefit.

All three of the women said the support shown for the benefit has been overwhelming.

Krista said that Caden is too young to really understand what is happening to him. He only knows he is sick and needs to make a trip once a week to the hospital, something he does not enjoy at all.

Caden isn’t old enough to truly recognize the support that the community is showing him either, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t appreciated.

“It’s just amazing how everybody is being so supportive,” said Robinson. “It makes you feel good that there are people out there, that care.”

Lacombe Daycare lands donation

Lacombe Athletic Park Association to hold fundraiser

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Lacombe Athletic Park Association is once again holding its gala fundraiser and they need the help of Lacombians to make it a success.

The gala is set to take place on March 8 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. Cocktails at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.

Like so many other initiatives related to the Lacombe Athletic Park, past LAPA chair Darren Gagnon said that the gala is a success because of all the good people who support it. “Like everything about this project, it has to do with the people.�

This year, LAPA is trying something a little bit different with the gala. Gagnon said this is the ďŹ rst year a musical group has not been booked as the evening’s entertainment. Instead, the LAPA is bringing comedian and impressionist Gery Schubert to Lacombe.

In addition to top-notch entertainment, Gagnon said there are always great silent and live auction items to bid on, as well as fantastic prizes in rafes and other contests. Barbecue packages, a Grey Cup trip, a Montreal Canadiens experience and

a number of sports items and some ‘very timely’ NFL memorabilia will be up for grabs.

There is a $1,000 cash door prize guests are entered into through admission and there is a diamond champagne contest where 100 $20 glasses of champagne are sold along with the chance to win a diamond pendant valued at approximately $1,400. While the gala has the look of a high-class fundraising event, Gagnon said it is not a “Snobby, stuffy event.� Attire is casual and guests are invited and even encouraged to wear their favourite team jersey. “It makes it a lot of fun. Nobody wants to sit around in a suit all night.�

Those who attend the gala not only have a chance to support the LAPA, but also get a chance to interact with some of what it has accomplished. For example, Gagnon said guests are ushered to their tables by members of the Lacombe Rams football team, so that guests can talk a little bit with the young people who use the facility.

The Rams aren’t the only sports’ celebrities that will be present at the gala. Former Montreal Canadien and Stanley Cup winner Gilbert Dionne, 2013 CFL Most Outstanding

Player Jon Cornish as well as a few other CFL stars and some Edmonton Eskimos alumni will be present as well, just to name a few.

Gagnon said when the LAPA worked out how they would operate each year ďŹ ve years ago, it became apparent that they would need to do need to do a lot of fundraising. So, the LAPA came up with the gala to be its main fundraiser for the year.

It was so successful the ďŹ rst year it was held, it has been held every year since, said Gagnon.

He added LAPA is continuing to provide Lacombe and all of Central Alberta the use of a top-notch sporting facility. He added that people should come out and support the event in order that they can continue doing so.

Between 320 and 350 people attend the gala, said Gagnon. He added that, typically, the event raises an average of $40,000 for LAPA each year.

Tickets for the event are going fast for the event. Gagnon said that he would guess less than eight tables of eight remaining.

Western Financial Group (Western) has announced it has awarded Lacombe Daycare to be a beneďŹ ciary of a $5,000 infrastructure grant to help support renovations to the facility.

This grant is one of 20 distributed by Western’s charitable arm, the Western Communities Foundation, that will help give back to the communities in which Western operates.

The Western Communities Foundation is donating a total of $100,000 to support community infrastructure projects. “Lacombe Daycare provides a nurturing environment to empower children and develop their self-esteem,� said Ryan Cushner, manager of the Western Financial Group branch in Lacombe. “We’re proud to have a part in renovating the daycare centre so children can enjoy a pleasant environment while learning and playing.�

In its 12-year history, the Foundation has distributed more than 80 infrastructure grants to communities across western Canada for numerous projects.

In 2013, Western, in partnership with its parent company, Desjardins Group, each contributed $100,000 to remediate ood-damaged playgrounds in the High River area. “We are proud that the Western Communities Foundation has made a positive impact on dozens of the communities we serve,â€? said Jeff Burke, president and CEO of Western Financial Group. “The projects we support with our infrastructure grants are particularly special to the Foundation because they are selected by our employees based on needs they see in their communities. It is a very special program, and we’re proud to announce that this year it will help improve daycares, art centres, ďŹ tness facilities, libraries, and other community resources across western Canada.â€?

Chamber of Commerce gears up for annual trade show

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Preparations for the annual Lacombe Trade Show are going smoothly for the event to take place April 11-12.

Justin Graham, chairperson of the Lacombe Trade Show Committee, said that the Trade Show is a great opportunity for both businesses and consumers in Lacombe. “I think it’s a good place for businesses to showcase their products,� said Graham.

He added that the trade show is held right at the end of winter, which gives people something to do after being cooped up for a long time.

Graham went on to say that trade shows offer a chance for businesses to network as well as show off their products to potential customers.

He added that it also provides a venue for businesses without a storefront to gain some exposure.

Things are already moving along fairly quickly for the event, and Graham said that trade show booths are already 39% sold. Graham added that more booths, about 20 of them, have been added to the trade show this year for a total of 120.

On the ipside, the marketplace has actually been made smaller as a result of making the tradeshow bigger and is nearly sold out.

However, Graham said that, should trade show booths not be sold out, there

is the opportunity to make more booths available to the marketplace.

Because of space constraints and the desire for more trade show booths, the stage area of the Lacombe Trade Show has also been removed this year, said Graham.

This year, the Chamber is striving to make the trade show a little more family friendly.

Graham said that the rationale behind this is that a lot of people shy away from visiting the trade show because they don’t want to take their kids. “I feel like trade shows are really boring for children,� said Graham. “If the parents want to go, they might not be coming because the kids don’t want to go. If we get the kids excited about it then we will get more parents coming.�

So, in order to attract more kids and therefore attract more people to the event, the committee is looking to book some entertainment that appeal to children.

Graham said that balloon animals, magicians, cotton candy and face-painting are just a few of the things that could make the bill.

Graham estimated that about 2,000 people came through the doors during last year’s trade show.

He added that he is hoping to get between 3,000 and 4,000 this year. “There’s 10,000 people in Lacombe,� said Graham. “It’s a reasonable goal to reach 3,000 of them.�

Sylvan Lake man killed in B.C. avalanche

BY ERIN FAWCETT Lacombe Express A Sylvan Lake man has died after being trapped in an avalanche while sledding near Revelstoke, B.C. this past weekend.

Christopher Shane McCoy, aged 36, has been identified as the victim.

Revelstoke RCMP and local search and rescue were called to a report of an avalanche on Boulder Mountain, about 8 kms from Revelstoke, at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 15th.

RCMP had advised the mountain was extremely busy with numerous snowmobilers, at the time of the incident.

A group of four snowmobilers from Alberta were near the Boulder Mountain snowmobile cabin when an avalanche was triggered. Two of the men were caught

in the avalanche and the other members of the party were able to find and dig out the two who had been hit.

McCoy was found to be unconscious but later died of his injuries. The second male survived with non-life threatening injuries. All snowmobilers were equipped with appropriate safety gear and beacons, police have said.

The B.C. Coroner Service was called to the scene and have since taken jurisdiction of the incident.

In press release, the Coroner Service said McCoy was an experienced snowmobiler.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

The family of McCoy has been notified of his death.

The B.C. RCMP launch distracted driving campaign Distracted driving is the focus for traffic safety partners during the month of February. Advertising online, on billboards and on radio will tell Albertans ‘Crotches Kill’ and driving safely requires keeping your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

Police in Alberta are seeing more crashes resulting from distracted driving, and despite the efforts of the government, enforcement and traffic partners, the trend is growing.

During February, Alberta’s Integrated Traffic Services, made up of Alberta Traffic Sheriffs and RCMP Traffic members will fo-

cus on enforcing distracted driving laws on highways in order to get the message out - distracted driving can cost you more than a data package. It can result in fines or worse - it can result in a fatal collision.

“Even with all this information going out, some drivers are still not getting the message,” said RCMP Supt. Howard Eaton, officer-in-charge, RCMP ‘K’ Division Traffic Services. “We are still attending crashes caused by driver inattention and we still see people talking on the phone, texting or even watching movies.”

Eaton recalls a recent

event in which Integrated Traffic members received reports of a vehicle being driven erratically during a snowstorm on the QE II Hwy. Callers indicated the driver was watching a movie from his laptop. When police stopped the vehicle, the driver was actually watching a movie from his laptop on the dashboard.

OPINION Giving hackers what they ‘want’ It’s the most brilliant idea in computer security yet and a deviously clever way to defend from hackers attempting to steal personal information.

Give them what they want.

Ari Juels, independent researcher and former chief scientist at RSA, the computer security company, along with Thomas Ristenpart of the University of Wisconsin, has come up with a new encryption system that has a touch of mischief.

How it works is this. The new system, which follows an approach known as Honey Encryption, will produce and deliver to hackers fake pieces of data for every incorrect attempt to guess a password or decrypt protected information.

Typically, hackers know when they have correctly decoded encrypted information. It’s easy to tell because a correct guess will produce a recognizable

piece of data while incorrect attempts yield only a garbled mess of code.

However, with Honey Encryption, each guess produces what appears to be a legitimate piece of data. Making it difficult for hackers to know which, if any, piece of data is the real one correctly decrypted.

For example, were a hacker to attempt to decrypt a credit card number, each attempt would return a different card number.

Each of the numbers would be fake, but each would look plausible as a real one with nothing to say it isn’t.

Honey encryption will not work as a viable security system for every piece of technology in the world and of course it does have downfalls. One of the most obvious being it won’t take hackers long to realize they are being duped.

If a hacker uses a program to rapidly make 10,000 attempts to decrypt one piece of data and it produces 10,000 positive re-

sults, obviously some, if not all, of the results are fake.

Hackers won’t be able to tell the difference between the fake and real data, but they will know the system is Honey Encrypted.

But, perhaps that in itself is a deterrent. Hackers are looking for an easy way in to obtain data, and may

just move on to the next piece when they realize the one they are working on is Honey Encrypted, and that is not such a bad thing at all.

Often, we see in movies, books and other stories how the heroes deal with the villain by “Giving him more of x than he can han-

dle,” yet seldom does this strategy work in the real world.

It certainly works for hackers though and it has a certain poetic justice to it that makes seem all the more sweet and clever.

It seems such a fitting solution it’s a wonder no one has thought of it before.

U.S., Canadian healthcare systems share challenges Both Canada and the United States are historically and practically steeped in fee-for-service medicine, and much of the power to control prices rests in the hands of the medical establishment. While provincial governments have periodic negotiations with medical and hospital groups, and there are global budgets for hospitals that try to constrain costs, the system is relatively expensive.

In 2011, the U.S. won the dubious honour of having the most expensive system in the world, spending about $8,500 per capita.

Canada spent about $4,500, making it the third most expensive country among a group of OECD-developed nations.

Still, that number needs perspective. In 1970, a few years before Canada implemented its national health insurance system, both countries were spending about 7% of the GDP on healthcare. Thirty-nine years later, the U.S. was spending 50% more of its national income on healthcare, leaving its patients with the highest out-ofpocket expenses in the world.

LIEBERMAN on my speaking tour across the country there, that notion did not compute. There is talk about imposing copays for some services as a way to help both the federal and provincial governments save money. But the idea of making people pay 50% of a bill or a family paying $13,000 out of pocket before insurance benefits kick in is wildly unpopular.

As in the U.S., there’s much soul searching about whether the country is getting as much bang for the bucks it spends. Does the quality of care match the country’s outlay? A number of studies, including the latest international comparison from The Commonwealth Fund, show that Canada and the U.S. both fall down on several dimensions of care. Both Canadians and Americans were more likely to report long waits for primary care and high use of emergency rooms com-

pared to other countries such as Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

I asked Jeffrey Turnbull, M.D., F.R.C.P.C., chief of staff at Ottawa General Hospital, about criticisms of the quality of Canadian healthcare. He said that, when it comes to treating heart attacks, stroke, heart failure and pneumonia “We do relatively well.” But when you look at the broader indices that measure the inequities, the picture is very different. “Our vulnerable populations have rates like the developing world.” We can say the same for groups in the U.S. Our two countries also share the burden of providing care for their aging populations. Indeed, lack of community support is one reason why waiting lists develop at Canadian hospitals. Seniors who are admitted to acute care hospitals sometimes stay longer than what’s medically necessary because they have no place to go.

The public, though, seems to be paying attention. Last summer the Canadian Medical Association polled residents to measure their priorities for long-term care. Ninety-three per cent said the govern-

ment should develop a comprehensive seniors’ strategy. The outgoing president of the CMA said the poll results sent a message the public wants action. In a system that’s accountable to the taxpayers who fund it, it’s easier for the federal and provincial governments to listen. Contrast that with the U.S. where long-term care is barely discussed, and the CLASS Act provision in the Affordable Care Act, a fledgling program to pay for longterm care was repealed.

Health care systems are not static, as Nicholas Timmins, the former health policy editor of The Financial Times, told a group of healthcare journalists at an Athens meeting a year ago. But neither do they change the fundamentals much. “Countries rarely change the way they do things,” Timmins told the group. Canadians may fix their system; we may fix ours, but neither country is rushing to embrace the other’s. Timmins added, “What systems do face is the desire to find a way to constrain costs.”

t couldn’t have been a better day for the Blackfalds Winterfest.

With the sun shining and weather cooperating, the annual Winterfest saw a huge turnout this past weekend, with many families eager to take part in the festivities.

Things kicked off Monday afternoon with the return of a favourite Winterfest event, the Penguin Dip where 11 brave dippers plunged into an icy cold pool as a fundraiser for the charity of the dipper’s choice. Huge crowds gathered to see the event, which was not held last year, make its triumphant return.

Firefighters were on hand to provide assistance and safety to the dippers, as well as feed the hungry families that attended the event.

Blackfalds Fire Department held a fundraiser barbecue and served up hot dogs to the hundreds of residents in attendance.

As Winterfest is a Family Day celebration, many of the events were child or family oriented. Children enjoyed an ice slide, bubble making, the famous loonie dig and watched ice-sculpting demonstrations by sculptor Scott Harrison. Many of those in attendance tried their own hand at the art, taking chisel to their very own block of ice.

All through the afternoon, those in attendance were also able to get a sneak peek of the near-complete Abbey Centre, which opens March 17 and even have questions about the facility answered by those who were involved in the project.

In the later afternoon and evening of Family Day, Blackfalds Youth Crew held a family bingo and there was also a family skate at the Multi-plex.

Visit Lacombe, Louisiana

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express If you have ever wanted a chance to visit the deep south, now is your chance.

Through the Lacombe & District Chamber of Commerce and Mystica Tours, Lacombians are being offered the opportunity to visit Lacombe, Alberta’s sister city of Lacombe, Louisiana.

Paul Myers, executive director for the Chamber, said that he was not involved with the Chamber when the sister relationship between the two cities was formed and therefore doesn’t know why such a relationship came to exist between them.

In any case though, Myers said he thinks such a relationship is a good one to have.

“Obviously, the name is the main connection,” said Myers. “It’s a good excuse or reason to get together with another community.”

Myers added that the relationship is also a good way for the two communities to share each other’s culture.

He added that there is possibility for some tourism spinoffs as well with residents of the two communities traveling between them to experience the different cultures.

“Some of our neighbours to the south maybe don’t know all of the great things there are to know about Canada and Alberta,” said Myers. He added that he enjoys bringing Canadian culture to the U.S. and enjoys experiencing American culture as well.

Keith Meyers, president of the Chamber, said that Lacombe, AB, sent a delegation down to Lacombe, LA several years ago.

Right around the time Lacombe, LA was going to send their own delegation to Alberta, Hurricane Katrina hit and the community in Louisiana was devastated.

Now, Lacombe, LA is eager to receive another group from Alberta as it gives them an opportunity to show off how they have rebuilt and recovered from that disaster.

Myers said that it adds another level of interest to the trip south.

“Katrina was such a massive event and had such an awful impact on those communities,” said Myers. “The opportunity to go there and see what they’ve done and to see how they’ve rebuilt and help them celebrate that is fun, it’s exciting it’s a positive thing.”

Myers added that, while Alberta has luckily not experienced such a massive disaster as Katrina, Albertans have a bit of a reputation for resiliency as well. It is just another example of common ground between the two communities and a way for Albertans to show their support.

“We’re all human beings,” said Myers. “I think we can relate to what they’ve been through.”

Jigo George, managing director of Mystica Tours, said that all the arrangements have been made for the trip.

Transportation, accommodations and a number of activities during the trip have already been taken care of, all travelers need to do is sign up.

“Everything is ready,” said George.

Some of the highlights of trip include sightseeing around Lacombe, a tour of a local gator ranch, swamp tours, canoeing, tasting and tour of local vineyards and meeting with some delegates from the communities.

George said that currently, only about five people have signed up for the trip but they are expecting more to register soon and are hoping for between 30 and 35 travelers by the end of the month.

The worst place to carry a cell phone Could smart phones be slowly killing us?

Some experts feel we’re living in an Alice-in-Wonderland world if we ignore radiation from these electronic devices. So today, here’s an example of what can go wrong.

The Environmental Health Trust’s Newsletter reports an unusual case.

A young woman, with no predisposing risk factors for cancer, made a practical decision. She decided to carry her cell phone in her bra.

Today with so many cell phones being snatched from people, I give her top marks for ingenuity and increased security.

Unfortunately, she developed breast cancer. But what shocked doctors was that the pattern of the cancer lined up perfectly with the shape of the cell phone.

This single case does not prove that radiation caused the malignancy.

But if I were a woman I would not push my luck. I’d sure choose another location to carry my cell phone.

So how serious is this problem?

Experts on radiation have warned us for years about ‘dirty electricity’ from cell phones and other electrical appliances.

Our homes were originally powered by clean electricity, using a safe frequency of 60 Hertz (Hz).

Now, transformers convert 60 Hz to low voltage power for electronic devices.

This creates micro surges of electricity that contain up to 2,500 times the energy of a conventional 60 Hz electrical system.

In effect, we are subjecting ourselves to dangerous electrical pollution.

She claims that the biological impact of cell phones is not related to power, but to the erratic nature of the signal which has an adverse affect on DNA repair.

In May 2010, the World Health Association (WHO), released a 10-year study into cell phone use and cancer rates. WHO recognized a significant correlation between brain cancer and those who used their cell phone, wireless home phone or WIFI for more than 30 minutes daily.

Since everyone, including children, will continue to use cell phones, what can be done to decrease the risk?

We can all practice what in Europe is called the ‘Precautionary Principle’ which means using oldfashioned horse sense.

Children are at particular risk since they have thinner skull bones making it easier for cell phone radiation to penetrate deeper into the mid brain.

They also face a lifetime exposure which places them at greater risk for parotid and deeper brain tumours.

Ideally, children should avoid the electromagnetic radiation of cell phones, or use them only for an emergency.

Parents should also stop the dangerous habit of al-

lowing children to sleep with cell phones under their pillows, subjecting them to radiation for hours at close quarters.

Everyone should turn off cell phones not in use and use the speaker on the phone to keep it away from their ears.

Being held just a short distance away can decrease radiation exposure from 1,000 to 10,000 times.

Remember that texting

with a phone exposes a person to the same amount of radiation as talking on the phone.

So use cell phones like porcupines make love very, very carefully, as it will take years to know the full extent of the danger.

This means bras are for breasts, not phones.

It’s also prudent not to place a cell phone in a shirt pocket over the heart.

And if men want to de-

crease their sperm count, place it in pants pockets.

For years I’ve warned readers about the potential dangers of excessive exposure to X-rays and CT scans.

For example, a CT scan of the abdomen produces 500 times more radiation than a single chest X-ray and 1,000 more times than a dental X-ray or bone mineral density test.

This is why I’ve urged

the government to issue radiation cards so that each person knows their total radiation exposure.

I’m also convinced we cannot ignore the danger of electromagnetic radiation from smart phones.

It’s the old story of ‘Caveat emptor’, let the buyer beware.

Examples of sportsmanship at Olympics and in Lacombe I saw the story of the two speedskaters and I began to think of good news coverage.

This week we picked up the story of the disappointment of Canadian crosscountry ski coach Justin Wadsworth as all his own athletes were all eliminated early.

He’d crashed and broken a ski.

Parts of his ski were broken and tangled around his foot.

In the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria an Italian bobsledder Eugenio Monti had won two silver medals and was hoping to win the gold.

The British two-man bobsled team’s bobsled had a broken bolt, Monti loaned the team one from his own sled. The British team won gold in that event.

Monti also repaired a broken axle on the Canadian four-man bobsled, allowing the Canadians to Breathe through a straw for 60 seconds.

ARTS & LEISURE Cow Patti Theatre’s Perfect Wedding hits the mark

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The wedding in the story is far from perfect, but Cow Patti Theatre’s production of Perfect Wedding is as near the mark as it gets.

Last week, Cow Patti opened its second show of the season, Perfect Wedding. The show runs through to March 2.

Director Walter Learning said that before the show started, he was experiencing the “First night jitters,” but after the performance ended he was pleased with the result. He added that it is somewhat unusual to go straight into the first night of a performance without first having a preview night to gauge how the show will be received.

“It came together quite well.”

Perfect Wedding is a brilliantly written farce where the comedy comes from the dialogue.

The witty wordplays and cleverly crafted exchanges between the characters create the comedy and also move the action of the play along.

Learning said that what a farce does is take a remotely possible situation and then stretch into something that is well beyond the scope of possibility. The plot of Perfect Wedding fits the bill, well, perfectly.

On the morning of his wedding day, Bill (Garfield Andrews) wakes up to find himself in bed with a woman (Susan Greenfield) he has never seen before nor remembers meeting.

As he tries to get rid of the woman and the incriminating evidence, his best friend and best man Tom (Timm Hughes) and wife-to-be Rachel (Valerie Barrett) show up at the hotel room.

Now, Bill is forced to enlist the help of his best man to get rid of the mystery woman and coerces Tom into pretending she is his new girlfriend. Which somehow ends up forcing chambermaid Julie (AnnaMarie Lea) to pretend she is someone else as well.

As the plot continues, the measures characters go to in deceiving other characters they are other people become more complex, and leads to some hilarious situations.

director for Cow Patti, had tried before to have Hughes perform with the theatre company, but was unsuccessful until now.

“It is a thrill to be here at last. It’s been a long time coming.”

Hughes also praised Lacombe, saying the audience on the opening night was terrific and very generous.

Tom’s back-and-forth exchanges with Bill create a lot of the meat and comedy of the play. Tom’s witty, sarcastic character plays well against the panicking, pleading

character of Bill.

Playing the character who is constantly being put-upon is always fun, added Hughes.

He said he enjoyed Tom’s constant attempts to maintain control of the situation that only result in that control slipping farther away.

“It’s one of those classic roll types that everyone relates to,” said Hughes.

He added one of the things he enjoys about this play is that it stretches out real-

ity in such a way that the audience doesn’t really realize how ridiculously unlikely the situation on the stage is.

“That’s why this play is particularly well-written,” said Hughes. “It does that, I think, quite masterfully. And you never question what the next bit of insanity is as you move along.”

Lacombe to be overtaken by music next month

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s time to celebrate music.

On March 3, the 33rd Annual Lacombe Music Festival begins. Norm Start, president of the Lacombe Music Festival, said that the event began to help young people studying music further their skills.

“It was started to give our young people a chance to showcase their abilities and talents,” said Start.

While musicians get the chance to showcase skills at typical performances, start said that another important aspect for the music festival was to give music students a chance to receive some feedback on their performances, something that does not happen in typical recitals or concerts.

Start likened the music festival to sports. He said that it was the musicians’ chance to test their skills and see how they

ranked, much like a game or tournament for a sports team.

“In hockey we have tournaments. That’s not possible in music.”

That critiquing aspect of the festival is a crucial one, said Start. He added that it can be essential for students wishing to go further with music (such as teaching it themselves or pursuing an otherwise musical career), to receive outside instruction in one way or another. Lacombe’s musical festival is one way of helping them do that.

“It’s all geared toward helping young people achieve their dreams,” said Start.

He added that, while he is not a musician, as a retired teacher he knows the value of constructive criticism.

“Positive evaluation, positive feedback, is very, very important. But also being able to give pointers on how one can continue to grow is very important.”

Start’s words are not unwarranted.

Many of the musicians who participated in the Lacombe Music Festival in their younger years now enjoy healthy careers in music and some even lend their hand to adjudicating the festival.

There is a competition aspect to the festival as well. Start said that first, second and third places are awarded in each of the disciplines and those who qualify will go on to perform in the provincial music festival.

Those who qualify from there may even have the opportunity perform at a national festival.

While the festival is geared mostly towards young performers, Start said it is open to all ages. He added that some of the singers in some of the choirs participating are well into their senior years.

There are 1,025 musicians in nine disciplines (piano, choral, band, speech, strings, pipe organ, vocal, instrumental and guitar) partaking in the festival. Eight adjudi-

cators will create the participants on their performances in the disciplines.

Sessions for the festival will be held at a number of venues throughout the City, many of them churches. Start commented on how fortunate the festival is that the community of Lacombe has embraced it.

“It is a community event, we are very fortunate to be able to use space in the church facilities,” said Start. He added that most of the facilities donate the space rent-free.

The Lacombe Music Festival will begin at noon on March 3 with choral singing at St. Andrew’s United Church. From there, other sessions in different disciplines will be held elsewhere in the City.

The festival runs March 3-7, takes a break for the weekend and resumes on March 10 ending on March 12. Start added the Grand Concert will be held at 2 p.m. on March 16 at St. Andrew’s United Church. news@lacombeexpress.com

Ponoka Home-school Thespians stage their play next week

BY MUSTAFA ERIC Ponoka News The Ponoka Home-school Thespians have been busy rehearsing at the Asker Church for their next act, Romeo and Harriett.

This is an adaptation to comedy by Charles Lovett of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The curtains will be raised for the first performance on the evening of Feb. 26 at the Asker Church.

“This a modern parody based on Romeo and Juliet and 36 home-taught students are involved” said director Debbie Zepick.

The students come from communities across Central Alberta, including Clive, Lacombe, Ponoka and south of Wetaskiwin and the work on the play started with the New Year.

Zepick said there would be a total of four performances, including the opening gala.

The second production

will be on Feb. 27 and two more the following day, the first a matinee and then the evening show.

The plot of the play, widely produced by mainly young troupes supported by schools and educational institutions throughout North America, involves young members of two rival families running two competing department stores falling in love, and despite some tragic incidents, they join hands in a happy ending.

RDSO presents ‘Voices of Heaven’ The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra presents its first concert of the year this Saturday evening at Gaetz Memorial United Church in Red Deer.

‘Voices of Heaven’, featuring guest artists VoiceScapes, begins at 8 p.m.

The RDSO will be performing Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

Musical director Claude Lapalme notes that, “Despite being a well-known and a beloved work, we still do not know many details about the genesis of Bach’s Mass in B Minor. It was written over several years with composition beginning in 1724.

“The profound humanity of the work, and its excellence in illustrating the emotional backbone of every line of the Mass, is a true wonder,” explains Lapalme.

“From the austere opening Kyrie to the softer, more operatic Domine Deus and the inspiring, praising Gloria, Bach uses a great range of styles – which is expected for a work written over such a long period of time – without losing a sense of cohesion in the work.

“Whatever the reasons Bach had to write the Mass, we can only be thankful that he did, as it is one of the great musical gifts to

the world.”

As mentioned, VoiceScapes will be featured during the performance.

The group is a professional music collective created in 2000 by two couples - Christina Jahn and Paul Grindlay, and Julie Harris and Jerald Fast.

Previous engagements include VoiceScapes as soloists in Purcell’s King Arthur with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra under Ivars Taurins, a Christmas program of Bach and Charpentier with the Red Deer Symphony and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with the Spiritus Chamber Choir and San Francisco’s Whole Noyse.

Over the last three seasons VoiceScapes has mounted three acclaimed opera in concert productions: Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Handel’s Acis and Galatea and Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona.

Ridley Bent brings latest country tunes to Red Deer Newly- released Wild Card is the latest in line of compelling recordings

Showcasing his knack for creating all kinds of compelling stories and characters in his music, country singer Ridley Bent is hitting the road in support of his latest disc Wild Card – an ambitious followup to 2010’s Rabbit on My Wheel.

He plays The Hideout on March 1.

During a recent chat, Bent describes Wild Card as similar to Rabbit on My Wheel, with most of the same creative team that backed that CD. An official CD release party runs in Vancouver mid-March. in the meantime, Bent, who now calls Winnipeg home, is hitting the road introducing the new tunes to audiences around the country.

“It has that country/ rock feel to it, but it jumps around a lot within the country genre,” he explains.

“There’s western swingstyle tunes, some rockabilly. For this tour, I’ll be mostly traveling with my guitar player, so it’s a very good way to see me and ‘get’ the songs. We’ve been doing that quite a bit.

There are a few band shows on the tour, but this way you’ve got me, my stories and Chris Dunn who is one of the best guitar players in Canada I would say.”

Produced by the John MacArthur Ellis, the new CD is also supported by an all-star band of country music’s finest as well.

And on Wild Card, the 2009 CCMA nominee and seventime BCCMA winner’s storytelling and songwriting chops are sharper than ever.

Channeling the high-energy performance ethic of artists like Dwight Yoakum and Little Feat, Bent and his band tear a deep strip off the joint with tracks like Brooklyn Texas. Of course these are love stories told the way only Bent can; tracks that run the gamut from hard and bitter to hardly better, including a down-tempo take on the classic Tom Petty song You Got Lucky.

While much of Bent’s new material is drawn from real life experiences, Wild Card has its share of shady characters, jackknifing tractor-trailers and whiskey-fuelled bar fights.

is a three-song picture of violence and vengeance informed by Bent’s fascination with the bleak worlds of writers like John Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy.

For Bent, the love for

music didn’t surface particularly early on. He was born in Halifax, then the family spent four years on a military base in Germany before relocating to Cold Lake. He then moved to Whistler, B.C. before settling in Winnipeg back in 2008.

“I have the pleasure of being the son of the world’s greatest country music lover – my dad,” he says with a chuckle.

“I know that because he had a T-shirt that said that, a mug in the kitchen that said that. He was the world’s greatest country music lover, and he could play the guitar and he could sing. And he was the life of the party.”

Bent recalls trying out the guitar a few times before it really clicked. His move to Vancouver coincided with a growing knack for songwriting. He started showing up at open mic events, then attended the B.C. Festival of the Arts in 2002 where he really got noticed.

After landing a few contacts, his first record, Blam, was released in 2005. It was extremely unique, featuring country, and hip hop sensibilities.

A fascinating concept, but the tunes didn’t easily find a home on radio.

His next project, 2007’s Buckles & Boots, was much

more in the country vein.

And it fit with Bent’s talents perfectly.

He doesn’t get too keyed up about making everything just perfect as the recording process takes shape, opting for the more earthy, gritty ‘live-off-thefloor’ approach. That has always been the case, clear through to Wild Card.

“We’ll do one song, probably play it about eight times, and then by the last four you are getting some really good takes. Then Johnny takes the best of the last four.”

Meanwhile, Bent has garnered quite the collection of awards over the years He swept the 2009 B.C. Country Music Association Awards winning seven awards.

Bent picked up Entertainer of the Year, Fans’ Choice Award, Gaylord Wood Traditional Country Award, Male Vocalist of the Year, Roots/Canadiana Award, Single of the Year and Socan Songwriter of the Year.

“I love country music because it’s storytelling music. I know I started off wanting to be a rapper, but I feel there are similarities between country and rap if you are just talking about lyrics,” he explains.

SPORTS Wranglers finish season with loss at home Head coach not worried about entering playoffs on losing streak

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Wranglers have ended the regular season on a bit of a low, but their coach is confident they can make it up in playoffs.

On Feb. 16, the Blackfalds Wranglers lost 4 – 1 in their final game of the season against the Okotoks Bisons.

Coach Brian Lenz said the loss was not unexpected.

He explained that the Wranglers were short some of their key players and that played a part in the loss.

“You aren’t going to beat that team unless you have a full team,” said Lenz.

He went on to say that despite being shorthanded and losing the game, the Wranglers played very well.

He added he was particularly impressed with goalie Kyle Baumgardner who made his debut in the game, stopping 36 shots for the Wranglers.

While many of the Wranglers players were obviously disappointed with the loss, Lenz maintained they played well and will hold their own in the post-season.

“We didn’t play that bad,” said Lenz.

“Losing once in awhile doesn’t hurt either.

Our guys hate to lose, I know that, but that doesn’t hurt. You’ve got to learn to lose before you can win. We aren’t going to go through the playoffs without losing once in awhile.

“It’s a matter of bouncing back. Like I said, if we had played poorly today I would have been worried.”

It was a fast, high action, hard-hitting game. Both teams played extremely aggressively and the matchup made for some exciting hockey.

Chris Couper of the Okotoks Bisons opened up scoring for the game halfway through the first period.

Continued pressure on the Blackfalds defense throughout the period allowed

the Bisons to hold onto the lead throughout the period but the equally aggressive Wranglers managed to keep Okotoks from scoring further in the period as well.

In the second, the aggressive stance of both teams continued.

Play even got a little too rough, resulting in several penalties being called on both teams, particularly Okotoks.

In any case the Bisons still managed to find more openings than the Wranglers, scoring two more before Blackfalds would finally get their first and only goal courtesy of Tiaan Anderson in the last five minutes of the period on a power play.

In the last period of the game, both teams calmed down a bit but still displayed a highly aggressive, competitive style of play.

Despite ramping up their game and keeping pace better than ever with Okotoks, there wasn’t time enough for Blackfalds to close the score gap and the Bisons scored

one more to end the game 4-1 in their favour.

As the team heads into playoffs, Lenz said every team vying for the Heritage Junior Hockey League Championship should be prepared to fight for it.

He added all the top teams in both divisions are close in the standings and the path to the championship will not be an easy one for anybody.

“It’s a tough league this year,” said Lenz.

“It makes the year interesting.”

Lenz said that discipline is something that has improved for the Wranglers but staying out of the penalty box will still be key during the playoffs.

He added that as long as the team skates hard and moves the puck they will do well but they will have to work hard to make it in the playoffs.

“I’m not guaranteeing anything,” said Lenz. “It’s going to be a battle.” news@lacombeexpress.com

The Knights smash the Panthers in blowout game ‘Best offense is a good defense’

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Last week, the Central Alberta Christian High School senior girls Knights made short work of the Parkview Adventist Academy Panthers, outscoring them 67 to 20 at Central Alberta Christian High School.

CACHS Knights Coach Travis Eggink said his team follows a “The best offense is a good defense” mentality and that strategy is what led them to victory.

“Defense leads to offense,” said Eggink.

“We work hard on defense to get easier offensive opportunities.”

It was a fast game where the Knights completely dominated the court. Using speed, lots of movement and solid passing the Knights outmaneuvered and therefore outplayed the Panthers.

Capitalizing on the Panthers’ mistakes, the Knights were able to secure quite a few turnovers throughout the game to keep the ball in their hands. When the Panthers did manage to get control of the ball, the Knights’ high-pressure defense kept them from scoring.

Eggink said that, while the Knights are generally a fairly high-scoring team, baskets can be hard to come by in girls basketball. He said the Knights’ speed and ability to constantly keep moving (as well as the aforementioned strong defense) led to better scoring opportunities for them.

Right now, the Knights are in the refinement stage of skill-building. Eggink said the girls have the skill and ability to play hard, now the goal is to make sure that is how they play consistently.

PAA Panthers Coach Brent van Rensburg said it was a combination of inexperience and fatigue that lost his team the

game. Van Rensburg said the girls were still recovering from a recent tournament in Washington and the Panthers’ game suffered because of it.

“They had some heavy legs,” said van Rensburg. “They weren’t playing aggressive.”

Van Rensburg added that many of his players have not played basketball before and are much less experienced than some of the CACHS players. He said that the inexperience, combined with fatigue, contributed to the large amount of turnovers the Knights were able to capitalize on.

Overall, the Panthers are in a learning season, said van Rensburg. He said the girls seem to be improving with each game (Wednesday’s game excluded) and he knows they can play better.

“It’s building and teaching them never to give up,” said van Rensburg. He added that, even in a blowout game like this one, there is always opportunity for the players to learn and improve.

“You are going to have one of those games now and again.”

Confidence and aggression are two things that the Panthers need to learn to be competitive in this league, said van Rensburg.

“The aggressiveness of this league is something that the new girls who haven’t played before need to learn.”

Eggink said that his team has had a very strong season. He added that as he has been working with a lot of the same players on the team for a number of years now and has been able to advance their skills.

That kind of experience certainly shows on the court and Eggink agreed that PAA’s lack of experience made a big difference in this game. news@lacombeexpress.com

VICTORY - The Lacombe U14 Shock ringette team won their third consecutive tournament gold medal this past weekend at the annual Spruce Grove Sweetheart tournament.

The team was undefeated in the round robin and defeated the host, Spruce Grove, in semi-final action. In the gold medal game they had a victory over St. Albert winning with a score of 1-0. This gold comes after winning gold at both the Red Deer and Cochrane tournaments. They have one final league game on Feb. 22 before heading to provincial play downs on March 1st. The team is comprised of 13 players from Clive, Morningside and Lacombe and is coached by Larry Litwin, Dale Freitag as well as junior coaches, Paige Collins and Sydney Wilson. The challenges of window coverings I’m the kind of person who likes to leave the blinds and curtains open, the natural light is very important to me.

Even though it has been bracingly cold the past few weeks, at least we get sunshine which allows us to imagine it’s warmer outside than it is.

The past few days have forced me to draw the curtains to try and stave off the cold coming in off the windows and it has made me miss the sunlight. Have courage readers, warmer days are ahead!

The drawback of being a designer is that I’m always looking at (or in) people’s windows as I’m driving or walking my dog. It is a drawback of my career and I find myself looking at windows most often to see what they are covered with. Lately most of you have had your shades drawn like I have and I suspect your houses are as dark and gloomy as mine.

MECKLER In my travels I have seen various types of window coverings that make me want to knock on doors and ask if they need my assistance to find them something more suitable. Window coverings are one of the hardest working design elements in your home providing both function and fashion and often I feel they aren’t given enough respect.

Imagine how a beautiful pleated shade feels, it can darken your bedroom and provide ‘R value’ to warm a cool room and yet it is so easily replaced by TIN FOIL! You know you are guilty, I see your hous-

es. The designer in me sometimes chuckles and sometimes I cringe. It’s time to treat your windows with the respect they deserve, people. Are you guilty of any of the following?

Flags – this is a fashion statement for some, whether it is the patriotic Canadian Maple Leaf or the bold orange of the Dukes of Hazzard battle flag these items are created to hang on flagpoles, not in your windows! It is truly unfair to the humble flag to expect it to act as a window covering, you usually have to pierce holes in it with nails or tacks to make it hang in place and it has no ability to open or close so it just hangs there, sad and overwhelmed.

Tin foil – not just for baked potatoes anymore! Tin foil has become a window covering of choice for darkening a room.

Imagine its confusion when you pull it out of the kitchen drawer – it’s expecting to

wrap itself around a potato and be placed in a warm oven and you take it upstairs and stick the poor thing on a frosty window. Shock and confusion floods the tinfoil as it stares woefully out into the street, its aluminum shivering in the cold.

Blankets - if you need to hang a blanket on a window, keep it simple. I can’t tell you how many wolves, cougars, Minnie Mouse and Sponge Bob blankets I see hanging on windows. You have to know these novels creatures are being scoffed at by people passing by. Give them the dignity they deserve and a resting place thrown over your couch and stick to a plain blanket if you must.

There are better solutions for window coverings, I would be happy to help you with the decisions.

The City of Lacombe is currently seeking applicants to undertake temporary part-time duties of Census Enumerators between April 7 and June 1, 2014.

Using ipads, enumerators will collect demographic information from every Lacombe household by conducting short personal interviews with City residents, and may be required to hand deliver census-related material and do follow-up interviews in-person or by phone with residents in assigned areas. Enumerators will also subscribe to a statement to keep information collected confidential and attend a training session.

Preferred Qualifications: • Be 18 years of age or older, have the ability to speak fluent English, be able to walk distances in varied weather conditions, and be able to operate a computer tablet.

The deadline for applications is 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014.
